COMMENTARY

JESSE JACKSON: TIME FOR A NEW 'GOOD NEIGHBOR POLICY' By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

G

reat “America is back,” President Biden announced repeatedly in meeting with allies in Europe. The question, of course, is back for what? Biden has sensibly insisted that we must “build back better” at home and abroad. Our neighbors to the south in Latin America offer a clear opportunity to show that is true. Now more than ever, it is time for a new Good Neighbor policy toward Latin America. Donald Trump had little interest in Latin America, other than labeling its refugees as terrorists, drug dealers, and rapists. He reversed the initial steps Obama took to move to better relations with Cuba. He doubled down on crippling sanctions, illegal under international law, on Venezuela, and pushed to overturn the president of the country. Biden has both an opportunity and an imperative to offer better relations. Latin America has been battered by the economic collapse accompanying the pandemic. Poverty has soared, as has the death toll of the coronavirus, over 500,000 dead in Brazil alone. Now elections promise to bring a new generation of progressive leaders to power across the hemisphere. Peru has led the way with the election of Pedro Castillo, running on a populist agenda accusing the mining barons of “looting” and promising to tax them to invest in health care and education. In Brazil, the left is poised to take over from an incompetent and corrupt right-wing government, now exposed for fraudulently conspiring to throw the leader of the opposition, Lula, in jail. In Chile and Colombia, the left looks to be rising in the wake of the right-wing regimes failure. At the same time, China’s influence has expanded, as it has become a leading trading partner and investor in the hemisphere. The recovery of Latin American economies will de-

4

President Biden pend in no small measure on the sale of commodities to China, such as beef from Uruguay, copper from Chile, oil from Colombia and soya from Brazil. Today, Brazil sends 30 percent of all exports to China, including 80 percent of its soybean crop and 60 percent of its iron ore. Nineteen countries have already joined Xi Jinping’s signature Belt and Road Initiative, a $1 trillion transcontinental network. Biden now must choose how to react to these developments. He must resist the easy course of trying to revive a new Cold War with China in the region and using that as an excuse to undermine progressive governments and side with the plantation and industrial oligarchs that have so dominated these countries for too long. The opportunity is to launch a new chapter of what Franklin Roosevelt termed the Good Neighbor Policy. Let’s join China in a competition defined not by battleships and coups but by investments in infrastructure and by increased trade. As the region’s neighbors, we have a big stake in their prosperity and

their health. We should be leading the effort to provide and help distribute vaccines against the coronavirus. We should be helping governments choose their own development projects. We should be mobilizing the region to address the deepening crisis caused by the extreme weather resulting from climate change – and aid the transition to sustainable energy. Saving the rain forests of Brazil surely is a global priority. As we’ve found in Central America, desperation will force people to leave their homes and seek ways to save their families. Walls will not stop them, but they have no desire to leave their homes if they can survive in them. Latin America and Canada are still leading trade partners. Our own prosperity and surely our own security are interrelated with their prosperity and security. In this regard, one clear first step would be to normalize relations with Cuba and end the illegal sanctions on Venezuela, which are now contributing to the immiseration of its population. Our policy toward Cuba

www.StyleMagazine.com

has failed for decades. These policies are sustained, of course, by domestic political calculations, particularly the voting blocks of Cuban and Venezuelan expatriates – many of them affluent – congregated in the key state of Florida. But Biden and Democrats are more likely to gain support in the communities with a new generation by changing course, not by continuing what clearly has failed. Biden has said repeatedly that he understands the world has changed. Surely a good place to demonstrate that is in reviving our relations with our neighbors in this hemisphere. NATIONAL NEWS: COSBY IS A FREE MAN AFTER PENNSYLVANIA SUPREME COURT OVERTURNS SEX ASSAULT CONVICTION By Sonia Moghe, Ray Sanchez and Kristina Sgueglia, CNN www.StyleMagazine.com Newswire

Bill Cosby conviction was vacated

ill Cosby was released from prison Wednesday after Pennsylvania's highest court overturned his sexual assault conviction, saying the disgraced actor's due process rights were violated in the first major case of the #MeToo era. The panel of Pennsylvania State Supreme Court judges said in their opinion that when former Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor investigated allegations of drugging and rape against Cosby in 2005, the prosecutor's decision to not prosecute him in return for his deposition in a civil case was ultimately used against him at trial. "In light of these circumstances, the subsequent decision by successor D.A.s to prosecute Cosby violated Cosby's due process rights," the judges wrote. Cosby was sentenced in 2018 to 3 to 10 years in a state prison for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his home in 2004. On Wednesday afternoon, Cosby was released from a prison outside of Philadelphia and picked up by his press representative. Cosby served three years in prison. His attorney Brian Perry said the comedian and his legal team were headed to his Pennsylvania home to "celebrate." "I want to thank the Supreme Court who saw the light and saw the truth," Cosby's family said in a statement released by the press representative, Andrew Wyatt. The stunning decision in the case of the man once known as "America's Dad" reverses the first high-profile celebrity criminal trial of the #MeToo

era.

For victims who sought closure in the resolution of the case, the ruling represented "a slap in the face" in the words of Lisa Bloom, the attorney for three accusers. Bloom said she thinks it could be "a very hard day" for all the women who accused him of sexual assault. One accsuer, Victoria Valentino, said in a statement: "I am outraged! Outraged! Stunned! My stomach is in knots. The work that we have done to uplift women has been overturned by a legal glitch. We now have a serial predator on the street." Gloria Allred, who represented other accusers, said the overturning of the conviction on technical grounds was no vindication of Cosby's conduct. "My heart especially goes out to those who bravely testified in both of his criminal cases. I represented a majority of the prior bad act accusers who testified," Allred said in a statement. "Despite the Pennsylvania Supreme Court's decision, this was an important fight for justice and even though the court overturned the conviction on technical grounds, it did not vindicate Bill Cosby's conduct and should not be interpreted as a statement or a finding that he did not engage in the acts of which he has been accused." Indeed, the Montgomery County district attorney who prosecuted Cosby, Kevin Steele, said the actor was free on a procedural issue that is "irrelevant to the facts of the crime." "I want to commend Cosby's victim Andrea Constand for her bravery in coming forward and re-

www.StyleMagazine.com

maining steadfast throughout this long ordeal, as well as all of the other women who have shared similar experiences," Steele said. "My hope is that this decision will not dampen the reporting of sexual assaults by victims. Prosecutors in my office will continue to follow the evidence wherever and to whomever it leads. We still believe that no one is above the law — including those who are rich, famous and powerful." Cosby "has been released" from prison, Pennsylvania Department Of Corrections spokesperson Maria Bivens said Wednesday afternoon. Wyatt met Cosby to drive him home. "Mr. Cosby was originally given a deal by Bruce Castor in which he was granted immunity. He gave up his fifth amendment rights in hopes that he would get back to work, back to life. And he always showed up for any legal matters and questions on his own accord. Charges should never have been brought against Mr. Cosby," the statement said. "I want to thank the attorneys who successfully argued his appeal and especially Mrs. Cosby who stood strong and was here for Mr. Cosby every step of the way and supported every idea and strategy from the attorneys and the team and she always knew that Mr. Cosby was innocent." Cosby denied parole in May by the Pennsylvania Parole Board, which cited a number of reasons for its decision, according to a letter from the board obtained by CNN. The letter said Cosby had to "participate in and complete additional institutional programs." The board cited Cosby's "failure to develop a parole release plan" and a "negative recommendation by the Department of Corrections" as factors that contributed to the decision. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court last December heard arguments regarding an appeal filed by Cosby's legal team to overturn the conviction.

A

h, summer. The time when families head to the nearest body of water to splash around and evade all the stinging insects that breed in landlocked bodies of water. What could be sinister about a good old American lake filled with people jet-skiing over the literal corpses of Black communities destroyed and submerged so that largely white communities can enjoy a Bud Light Lime in the (sort-of) post-pandemic fresh air and—wait, we just heard it. And so did Amber Ruffin. With Fox News-incensed conservative white people storming beleaguered school board meetings to demand that progressive demon du jour Critical Race Theory be banned for daring suggest that racial discrimination (plus enslavement, oppression, and straight-up genocide) played any part in the founding of this great, slave-built, Native peoples-murdering nation, Ruffin kicked off a segment of Friday’s Amber Ruffin Show by introducing viewers to Georgia’s Lake Lanier. Created by flooding a primarily Black town called Oscarville in 1912, the lake’s happy boaters and floaters now paddle directly on top of the still in place

remains of a town which was hounded out of literal existence by white mobs whipped into a racist frenzy after the deeply sketchy conviction of two Black teenagers for crimes against a white woman. As Ruffin noted, when Americans think of water-related catastrophes from 1912, there’s only one that James Cameron made an Oscar-reaping movie about, and it’s not Oscarville. Nor is it Alabama’s Lake Martin (built on the now-sodden bones of the majority-Black town of Kowaliga, along with its Black college and the first Blackowned railroad). And, before northern Peacock viewers get all self-righteous, Ruffin explained how little she’d known until this week about the Black communities of York Hill and Seneca Village, even though she walks by Central Park every day, and that New York landmark is built over those two Black communities, destroyed to make way for the park and reservoir. Ruffin went on to pull up a list of such deliberately sunken Black towns all across America, including the optimistically named town of Neversink, New York, which is now mainly comprised of water, including the more

appropriately named Bittersweet Reservoir. As Ruffin ran down some more of that inconvenient American history current-day white Americans are attempting to bury under a lake of screeching ignorance and patently un-American censorship, the all-American policy of Development Induced Displacement (a.k.a. “Get out, we wanna put a major water body on your grandmother’s

NCAA’S DIVISION 1 RECOMMENDS ALLOWING ATHLETES TO PROFIT FROM NAME, IMAGE, AND LIKENESS By Brad Polumbo www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

I

t looks like those positive effects will come sooner than later. The NCAA received another major blow Monday on its grasp to keep collegiate athletes from profiting off their name, image, and likeness. Monday morning the NCAA’s Division 1 council, a 40-person council composed largely of university athletic directors, recommended that the NCAA allow players to begin profiting from their name, image, and likeness (NIL). Last week the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the NCAA rules that limit educational benefits for athletes are not reasonably necessary to distinguish between college and professional sports. Under current NCAA rules, athletes cannot be paid or profit from their NIL. The scholarship money colleges can offer is capped at the cost of attending the school. The NCAA has long defended its rules as necessary to preserve the amateur nature of college sports.

8

July 1, 2021 - July 7, 2021

The NCAA is a multi-billion dollar organization that profits from the very athletes it has been trying to withhold fair compensation from for decades. According to their website, “the total athletics revenue reported among all NCAA athletics departments in 2019 was $18.9 billion.” NCAA responds Following Monday’s recommendation, the NCAA said in a statement “while opening NIL activities to student-athletes, the policy leaves in place the commitment to avoid pay-for-play and improper inducements tied to choosing to attend a particular school. Those prohibitions would remain in effect.”.

TARA REID ON DMX, DEEPAK CHOPRA AND THE ART OF ASCENSION By Allison Kugel, Special to Style – www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

T

ara Reid burst onto the scene as the flawless blue-eyed babe of the iconic 1999 camp comedy American Pie, a Fast Times at Ridgemont High for twenty-something Gen-Xers and precocious Millennials. Her flawless all-American looks led to films from cult favorite The Big Lebowski, to Urban Legend, Van Wilder, Josie and the Pussycats, Dr. T & the Women and My Boss’s Daughter. She starred and held her own alongside Ryan Reynolds, Ashton Kutcher, Rosario Dawson, Kate Hudson, Richard Gere and other movie heavyweights. And then, something happened. Reid was young, stunning and famous; and the media began taking more of an interest in her after-hours role as Hollywood’s resident party girl; largely ignoring her talent and her work ethic. Unlike most of us, Reid’s young adult days and nights were captured by paparazzi for the world to see. During our interview she is quick to point out that, at the very least, mercifully, social media had not yet been invented. Thank God for small favors. A painful public breakup with then-fiancé Carson Daly and a bout with botched plastic surgery further spun Reid’s public narrative out of control. She recently told E! news, “They almost make a cartoon character out of you, and they keep going with it," referring to the rampant tabloid journalism of the 2000s. The experience sent Reid reeling, and into a self-imposed media exile where she learned to reflect, regroup, and re-emerge focused on her craft, and with a healthy sense of humor as she displays in her willingness to embrace the camp genre with the Sharknado

film series. In addition to working in front of the camera, she’s added film producer to her resume, with an upcoming slate of releases under her production banner, Hi Happy Films. As women in our forties, Tara Reid and I discuss the power of knowing oneself and becoming unflappable in the face of life’s inevitable ebbs and flows. Smart, soulful, and creative, Tara Reid has reclaimed her power and found her most valuable commodity: peace of mind. Allison Kugel: You were just working on a film with DMX before he passed. Tara Reid: Yeah, a movie called Doggmen. It’s his last film and it was really interesting, because he didn’t get to finish the whole film. They had to do what they did with Paul Walker (in his last Fast & Furious role). They make these facial sculptures and they put it on a face, and it looks exactly like [DMX]. It’s crazy. Allison Kugel: Like CGI? Tara Reid: No, it’s literally a face they make and put on. The last couple of scenes that he has to film, that will be what they are doing. It’s incredible and it looks so real. It looks just like him. So, that is how they are going to film his last scenes, and I’ll be in those scenes with him. Allison Kugel: What is that going to feel like for you, to do that? Tara Reid: I think everyone was absolutely broken by DMX’s [death]. He wasn’t just a great rapper, but he was a poet. I think he was one of the best rappers of our time, and this movie explains that. The last person

Actress Tara Reid that really did that was Tupac. I think it will be a great film. He’s a great actor, he’s a voice, and that mattered a lot to him. I think he will be really happy about how this movie comes out and looks. It’s DMX, and just to be a part of that history with him is pretty much incredible. Allison Kugel: When he was on set, did he seem healthy? Did he seem happy? Tara Reid: I never saw him on set. The movie started before I started working. I was due [on set]at the end of the movie. Then, unfortunately, that is when he passed. I actually never got to do the real scenes with him. Allison Kugel: Oh man! Tara Reid: I’m in the other scenes with the “not real” version of DMX. It’s going to be really interesting, and we are shooting that down in Florida.

B

reak out this summer and have some well-deserved fun in the city! With relaxed restrictions in our city, Houstonians have now been given the green light to go outside to play. Get reacquainted with the fresh flowing air, the sight of people going here and there, and not feeling boxed in. As you unleash yourselves don't forget to do it in the safest and most respectable way. If you have not been vaccinated please do well by your fellow man by wearing your mask. All should still practice social distancing. Now is the time to get ready to go oooouuuuttttssssiiiidddeeee!!!!!!! And just to help you out we at Houston Style Magazine have a created a list of 15 things to do in and around the city.

1. Visit your local Farmer's Market

Farmers seem to have a very special relationship with the earth and the sun because fruit and vegetables from there taste the absolute best. Strawberries have more juice. Apples are crisper. Carrots pack a strong crunch. Green beans are tastier. It's the best from farm-to-table goodness. Sometimes you can find things there that you can't find in the big named grocery stores. Shopping there is just an experience that everyone needs to encounter.

2. Go up, up, up in the sky in a hot air balloon

Yes, you can take a hot air balloon ride in Houston. There are several places you can go to schedule a trip. Have an unbelievable experience soaring up above Houston trying to find your house. Be amongst the birds and see how beautiful our land truly is.

10

July 1, 2021 - July 7, 2021

3. Go stargazing

Go to the dark side to see the stars and don't forget your telescope for a closer look. Try to find the Little Dipper or create as image of your own. One of the best places to go see the stars is on the rooftop of the George Observatory in Brazos Bend State Park operated by the Houston Museum of Natural Science. If you check this out, some pre-planning will need to be done. Tickets are $10 a pop.

4. Watch bats fly from the Waugh Drive Bridge

Bats are thought to be creepy and spooky and if that floats your boat go take a look. See an estimated 250,000 Mexican free-tailed bats that call the bridge home. We can thank the bats as they devour many area insects in Houston. This is thought to be one of the largest colonies of bats in the state and this is the closest you can come to bats. Before you go, look up the various safety precautions to keep you and the bats safe. 5. Check out a movie at the drive-in An oldie but goodie is back, the American drive-in. Thank COVID-19 for the popularity of this classic form of entertainment. There are dozens of drive-ins across Houston. Just grab your snacks, load up the fam, and drive into your movie spot. This may also take time to prepare. If it is raining with thunder you may need to cancel your trip. Make sure you can get FM stations because you need that to hear the movie. Costs are affordable since most charge by the carload. 6. Take a swing at Top Golf This is not a putt-putt golf type of expe-

www.StyleMagazine.com

rience. Make a reservation to take a shot at the semi-outdoor facility. Don't worry about food. Top Golf has an array of bite-sized sharable foods and larger entrees including drinks and desserts. This activity is best enjoyed with groups of people so bring all your vaccinated friends.

7. Feed the horses

Did you know the Houston Police Department has stables of horses that you could go touch? Well, they do. The mounted division of the department has plenty of gorgeous thoroughbreds that you can feed and touch. Please see the safety precautions of feeding the horses. Bring some apples, carrots, and peppermints to feed the horses at your own risk. Be careful of your fingers as you don't want to put your hand to close to the horse's mouth. All this fun can be had for free. 8. Go on a bike tour of the city Your legs will go into overtime as you get them pumped for this activity. There are over 1,000 plus bikes that you can rent around the city. This is one of the most leisurely to see your city in an entirely different way. When renting a bike from any B-station around the city be prepared to pay $3 per 30 minutes. Members of Houston's B-cycle program get the first 60 minutes free for every ride.

9. See a performance at the Miller Outdoor Theater

Live entertainment is back at Miller Outdoor Theater. See stage plays and other forms of entertainment on top of the hill. Pick a seat in the theater or go up the hill to have a picnic. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and snacks.

Free tickets are given away for covered seats each performance but trust me you have to get in that line super early. Get tickets beginning at 9 am one week prior to the performance date. Be aware some things have changed at the theater. Attendees are asked to wear a mask and adhere to other safety guidelines.

10. Fall into skydiving

Allow the adventurer in you to come out. Go freefalling from a height of 14,000 feet at a rate of 120 mph. Training is provided beforehand. After your jump, get an edited video and photos from your experience. Jumps start at $179 but you must be at least 18 years old and weigh less than 265 pounds. Athletic clothing is suggested. Check the website of any facility to see their frequently asked questions.

11. Wild times at the Houston Zoo

Have a wild time at the Houston Zoo with the animals. Reconnect with the lions, tigers, bears, and other animals. Look at the animals, feed the giraffes, watch the baby animals in the pool, and enjoy other experiences. There are indoor and outdoor viewing areas. Online reservations are required to help with capacity at the zoo. The zoo is opened 7 days a week and general admission tickets start at $22.95. However, once a month the zoo offers free daytime admissions on Tuesdays. 12. Get cool with the Underground Creamy Your taste buds will thank you for this cool treat if you can solve the mystery. This

activity makes you use your brain as you follow clues to find out the new mystery flavor served up by the Underground Creamy. Find it and you will be rewarded to buy your pint online before its official release to the public. The way this ice cream tastes, you will definitely want to have some. The creamery here sells out constantly because it is so good. This place has tons of mix-ins ice cream combinations that make it unique. Go on their Instagram account to check out when the next mystery flavor riddles will drop. This is such a fun way to get something cool.

13. Visit a nature center

The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center is a Houston treasure as you are allowed to connect with nature. Across 155-acres of land, the nonprofit offers the opportunity to explore the urban nature sanctuary. This arboretum has saved many native plants and animals. There are plenty of programs for all ages at this nation's oldest education facility in the state. On addition, there are several summer camps planned with a starting fee of $20 for members and $35 for nonmembers.

14. Take a drive the road to Galveston

Spend a day on the beach or on the boardwalk. Best known for their miles of beaches, which is great but don't limit your activity just to the beach. There is more to explore. Throw your reel in to catch a fish with many of the charters in the area. Go high above Galveston skydiving, Admire the beauty of dolphins. Even go on some water adventures. Finish your full-packed activity day by enjoying food from the local restaurants.

www.StyleMagazine.com

Another option to consider is to rent a beach out for the weekend and cook your fish hall there. Galveston is always known as a fun place to go.

15. Go down the boardwalk in Kemah

Just like the song says, "Go down the board under the sea." Open daily, the boardwalk has restaurants, rides, amusement, retail stores, festivals, charter tours, and seaside shows. Add a trip to Pleasure Pier and you wont ever want to leave. This summer there are a number of concerts planned and the annual Texas Outlaw Challenge. Costs vary depending on the activity. Just a short drive away, heading there makes for a quick getaway. These are just a few of the places in Houston that you can have fun outdoor fun with your mask off at certain times to prevent the spread of COVID. Families and friends can reconnect with smiles, laughter, and while making some new memories. Find out more information about each our 15 activities by looking up each organization online. You will find everything you need. So, Houston, what will you do to get out to play this summer? Break free and remember how times used to be. Enjoy your summer, Houston!

SPORTS NEWS: ASTROS LOOK VERY UNFAMILIAR

ONE WEEK LATER AGAINST THE ORIOLES By Brian Barefield, Sports Editor www.StyleMagazine.com

I

t was all good just a week ago,” hip-hop legend Jay-Z bellowed on his song ‘A Week Ago’ off his Vol. 2…Hard Knock Life album. Those lyrics literally describe the Houston Astros who find themselves in the midst of a three-game losing streak after being defeated the Baltimore Orioles 13-3 at Minute Maid Park. Houston’s losing streak comes one week after the team had put together 11-wins in a row, before losing against the Detroit Tigers in the second game of a four-game series. Baltimore, who was swept by the Astros on last week, now finds themselves on the verge of returning the favor if they can get the win in the next game. That would give a big boost to a team that had only one road win in 23 outings before back-to-back wins over Houston. "They're getting the breaks this series that we were getting the last series against them," said Astros manager Dusty Baker after watching his team lose their fourth game in the last five outings. "I guess it's their turn to get the breaks." Houston caught a bad break at the beginning of the game after losing starting pitcher José Urquidy to shoulder

M

Astros have a tough night at the ballpark discomfort in the second inning after throwing only 27 pitches. “We were hoping we’d get some innings out of him today and put our bullpen back in sync for the next five days,” said Baker. “It didn’t work. Boy, it was a tough night. It was a real tough night for our offense and a tough night for our pitching staff.” Andre Scrubb relieved Urquidy and pitched 2 2/3 innings not yielding one run. Before the play he was replaced by Brooks Raley, who gave up two runs to the Orioles, breaking a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth inning. Houston would rally to score two runs in the bottom of the inning as Abraham Toro hit a two-run RBI single. Unfortunately, that would be the last run the Astros would score. Baltimore opened the floodgates on the combination of reliever Ryne Stanek and utility player Robel

Garcia in the eighth and ninth innings scoring nine runs to end the game. “I was definitely running on fumes,” Stanek said about his performance. “It has been a pretty heavy workload. I have been throwing the ball really well until today. I hit a wall physically and I knew the strain the bullpen had been under, and I knew that there wasn’t anybody coming to help. So, everything that happened was going to be on me. I just tried to grind through it.”

STEAK-48 POSTS SIGN: ASK CUSTOMERS TO SPEND $100 PER PERSON MINIMUM – RACIAL UNDERTONES? By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

T

here's currently a huge debate on social media where people are discussing how much customers need to spend at a restaurant. All thanks to Steak 48. This high-end chain has locations in Houston, Charlotte, Chicago, and Philadelphia, and the latter two have adopted a new policy, stating that there is a $100 per person food and beverage minimum. The restaurant says on its website that this requirement is "to ensure that each guest enjoys the total experience of food, service, and atmosphere." The $100 minimum does not include tax or a tip. All of the Steak 48 locations also have a strict dress code. "Proper attire required for the comfort and enjoyment of all of our guests," the chain adds on its website. Banned clothing includes anything "excessively frayed", anything "emitting offensive odors", and exposed undergarments. The majority of people on social media, however, aren't fans of the change. Steak 48 was intended as a luxury experience from the start. It opened in September 2020 and in the same month, executives told The Inquirer that it was aiming at a $120 check average, in line with other high-end steakhouses in town. According to its website, Steak 48 serves "the finest steaks and high-quality seafood in an intimate and vibrant setting. Our diverse menu will satisfy any personal craving, as we serve the best USDA prime steaks, succulent seafood, and shellfish along with inventive and classically inspired side dishes and appetizers.” But some people might not get to enjoy any of that now. Twitter user Dennis The Menace — whose Tweet we included in this listicle — hasn't been to Steak 48 prior to seeing the tweet posted showing the $100 minimum and it sounds like he's not going to. Dennis believes the strict dress code has racial undertones. "I think, combined with their extremely specific dress code, this restaurant has made it clear that they don't want to serve people of color, and the community at large should act accordingly," he told Bored Panda. "People need to stop supporting places that are harming our communities.” Not everyone shares this sentiment. Black foodie Ernest Owens finds this current controversy a misplaced

Houston's Steak 48, located in River Oaks. Screenshot of Steak 48 outrage. "It's obvious that faux-woke people in Philadelphia have drunk the anti-Black Kool-Aid and bought into stereotypes that suggest Black people are cheap and poor and lack taste. That is so far from the truth. In fact, we are the complete opposite," Owens wrote in Philadelphia Magazine. "Go to any major steakhouse in Philly, and Black people are there," Owens continued. "Before the pandemic, Del Frisco's, Ocean Prime, Capital Grille, Chima, and other places along what I often describe as Center City's 'Steakhouse Row' were hot spots for Black diners. Any Black professional in town has likely gone to these places multiple times and will tell you so.” "From political networking to engagement parties, we’ve made these restaurants our idea of a good time. I’ve hosted dinner parties at them, and members of my diverse social circles paid and tipped well without a sweat. And yes, I can cook my own damn New York strip just as well — but with steakhouses, it’s always been about the ambiance and experience of going out and being dapper. Dress-code policies that call for professional attire never bothered us because —

just like anyone else — Black people know how to respect the rules of engagement. While some superstar athletes and musicians may have come to these places in their super-casual fits and sneakers, many more Black customers have shown up dressed to the nines.” Steak 48 ultimately responded to the whole ordeal. "Like many restaurants in our industry, we’ve had to make some updates to our policies, like the $100 per person minimum in [an] effort to support our staff and restaurant’s operations, and provide the ability to be successful as a steakhouse designed for the full sit-down experience," the chain told Bored Panda in a statement. "Our standard 18 percent minimum gratuity also helps ensure our staff is supported, especially as our community continues to reemerge after a challenging year."

SIMPLY VIET IS SIMPLY DELICIOUS!

A

s Vietnamese food is one of my favorite cuisines that I enjoy on a regular basis. Since discovering the Uber Eats app, I have tried a few places that offer Pho, Vermicelli Bowls also known as V-Bowls, and Vietnamese egg rolls. The other day while surfing for something to order, I checked my favorites and noticed that I had placed 59 deliveries with Simply Viet. They are located at 10830 W. Belfort Blvd in Southwest Houston. From my history of orders, I can say that Simply Vet is simply delicious. According to the Uber Eats website, Simply Viet “ is one of the 10 most ordered spots in all of Brays Oaks. Wondering what's the best thing on the menu? The fruit smoothies are one of the most ordered items among the 28 things on the menu and the char-grilled pork rice/vermicelli and the tea are two of the items most commonly ordered together.” To state that their food is good, will not even begin to describe the delicious, flavor-packed, and well-portioned meals that I have experienced. The flavors are not limited to the food; they also serve fruit smoothies, iced coffees, and flavored green teas. My most frequently ordered item is the Char-grilled pork rice bowl with a fried egg over medium, Vietnamese egg rolls, and fish sauce on the side. In addition to that, I usually order the Strawberry Green Tea or a Strawberry/Pineapple smoothie. One of our co-workers frequently orders the Pork Banh Mi with a fried egg over easy. The pork is savory, well-seasoned, and slightly smoky. It doesn't need the fish sauce, but I use a little of it anyway. Another great surprise about Simply Viet is the price, a V-Bowl is only $7.95, and if you add the egg it only costs a $1.00. The Sandwiches (Bahn Mi's) are only $4.99 with the option of adding on any additional items such as Avocado, a fried egg, or extra meat for a small charge. There are others that share our love for this place, on a Facebook review, one person wrote: “Great and friendly service and amazing food. The bread for the banh mi was FRESH! I will definitely be coming back. “ Another guest posted this: “New place added to my list! The food is delicious

and very fresh. Also, the customer service is great! Thank you guys!! “ If you plan on visiting Simply Viet, their hours are 9:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday; they are closed on Saturday and Sunday. After your visit, give them some feedback on their social media pages. Thanks for reading, and please

ENTERTAINMENT: PRODUCTION FOR ‘BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER’ OFFICIALLY BEGINS By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

Houston Style Magazine

1/8-Page AD TEMPLATE

B

HOUSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT NOTICE TO PROPOSERS

lack Panther: Wakanda Forever has officially begun production in Atlanta at Pinewood Studios, according to Marvel boss Kevin Feige. Speaking to Variety, Feige addressed the emotional difficulty of making the film without the late Chadwick Boseman, who passed away in August of last year. As the Black Panther himself, Boseman helped usher in a more diverse era for Marvel that’s included Anthony Mackie’s turn as Captain America. In the comics, Black Panther made his first appearance in Fantastic Four #52, which was at least three years before Sam Wilson’s Falcon appeared for the first time in Marvel comics in Captain America #117 When King T’Challa got his first solo movie back in 2018, the world stood in shock and awe at the incredible world of Wakanda and all its technological glory. It was a movie that was years in the making and meant so much to so many people all around the world. I will never forget the first time I saw the trailer and the tears that came to my eyes. It truly was a very special moment in Marvel history. Given the kind of sensation

16

it caused, it was no shock when the movie went on to become the highest-grossing non-Avengers film of all time, earning $1.34 billion worldwide. It also snagged seven Academy Award nominations including Best Picture (it was the first-ever superhero movie to be nominated for this honor) and won for its score, costume design, and production design. I have no doubt we’ll get more of that in the second installment. Black Panther: Wankada Forever aims to “make Chad proud” The cast members are set to reprise their roles in the sequel, with Ryan Coogler returning to direct. But the huge void that Boseman has left behind will never be filled. It’s definitely a bittersweet moment for everyone involved, but they also share a sense of responsibility. Feige said that “it’s clearly very emotional without Chad,” but that they are excited to jump back into the world of Wakanda and are “going to do in a way that would make Chad proud.” Anyone else feel torn up inside after reading that? Even though we would love

July 1, 2021 - July 7, 2021

to see Boseman in the sequel in some shape or form, Marvel previously confirmed that they will not digitally recreate Boseman for the occasion. And they will not have someone replace Boseman as King T’Challa. I’m so relieved about that, and I’m sure many others are too. It just wouldn’t be the same and would make it harder to watch. The plot details for the sequel have been kept under wraps for the most part, but previous reports have alluded to the film diving more into the particulars of Wakanda. That could mean a lot of things, but I hope that one of them is Letitia Wright’s Shuri stepping up to the plate in the absence of her brother. Her becoming the new Black Panther would be absolutely amazing, and so fitting!.

This week we are continuing the conversation on neighborhoods in Houston to invest in. Just 10 miles north of The Heights and Downtown, you will find a culturally astute neighborhood called Acres Homes. This neighborhood was developed during World War I and was once known as the South’s largest unincorporated African American community. With a unique mixof urban and rural living, Acres Homes gave residents the best of both worlds, country living with easy access to the city. Diana J. Kleiner, contributor to the Handbook of Texas Online, stated, “The community itself had become a sprawling working-class neighborhood of well-kept brick and frame homes interspersed with abandoned and dilapidated shacks.” Although conditions began to decline because of decades of crime, drug abuse and neglect, the community and the City of Houston are now partnering together to revitalize and enhance
