Joe Biden on last week's mass shooting in #UvaldeTX: "Don't tell me we can't have an impact on this carnage...When we passed the assault weapons ban, mass shootings went down. When the law expired, mass shootings tripled. The idea that an 18-year-old kid can walk into a gun store and buy 2 assault weapons—It's just wrong."

COMMENTARY
TRUMP'S BIG LIE IS A THREAT TO AMERICAN DEMOCRACY By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
O
n Thursday evening, the House Select Committee investigating the sacking of the Capitol on January 6 will hold the first of its primetime, public hearings. The committee has done an exhaustive investigation, interviewing a thousand witnesses, looking at tens of thousands of documents. The hearings will reveal new information about what was in fact a multi-layered effort to overturn the results of a presidential election, driven by the White House and involving Republican legislators, operatives, state officials, and donors. The hearings will ask every American to understand how vulnerable our democracy is, and how close we came to losing it. The question, of course, is whether it is too late to save our democracy. Donald Trump has persisted in propagating his Big Lie about the election, despite the fact that court after court (many judges appointed by Trump), his own attorney general and Justice Department, and partisan audits of votes in several states universally found no evidence of fraud that could have come close to making a difference in the election result. No matter. Trump has persisted, the right-wing media led by Fox News has echoed his claims, and today, twothirds of Republican voters say Joe Biden is not the legitimate winner of the 2020 presidential election, and that the election was stolen from Trump. Many Republicans join Trump in praising as patriots those who sacked the Capitol. The Big Lie goes even further than this. Across the country, in the Congress and in the states, Republican officials have systematically blocked efforts to strengthen our electoral system, and instead, in states where they have power, have passed a range of measures
4

January 6th Sacking of America's Capital, Led By Former President Donald Trumps' Right-Winged to make voting more difficult. Driven by Trump, they have also supported extremists for what used to be nonpartisan posts in charge of the administration of elections. In some states, they have given the Republican legislatures greater power to overturn the results of the elections. By 2024, Republicans in about 20 states will be primed and eager to ensure that their candidate wins - no matter what the voters say. In the Congress, Republicans have filibustered attempts to reform our electoral laws to make clear how the electoral college works - and how it must reflect the votes of the people. They have filibustered against attempts to set federal standards for voting that would make registration and voting far easier. They have even blocked efforts to revive the Voting Rights Act, the keystone of the civil rights movement that was gutted by five right-wing
June 09, 2022 - June 15, 2022
Republican-appointed Supreme Court justices. The last time the Voting Rights Act re-authorized, it received nearly universal bipartisan support in the House and Senate. No more. Now ensuring the right of Blacks to vote meets with partisan opposition. There’s the rub. Republicans in polls say that they believe that votes are counted honestly in states that vote Republican, in rural and suburban areas where Republicans congregate. They say that fraud takes place in urban areas - areas where Blacks and Hispanics live. Mail-in ballots, which Trump objects to, are fine in Republican areas, but somehow illegitimate in urban areas. When senior citizens used mail-in ballots, there was no problem. Now that more African Americans and Hispanics use them, they are viewed as suspect. These fears are compounded by the so-called “replacement theory,”
www.StyleMagazine.com
a favorite of the right-wing media. The replacement theory essentially argues that Black, Hispanic and Asian American votes are tainted because Democrats allegedly are plotting to use immigrants to “replace” white majorities. America, in this view, must remain a white, Christian, male-dominated country. And if that takes subverting the democracy to ensure that the minority can rule, so be it. The Jan. 6 Committee hearings are, in many ways, a plea for Americans to defend their democracy. This should be as popular as apple pie - but it won’t be. The committee will face a right-wing media complex - Fox News, Newsmax, the QAnon network and legions of poisonous talk radio hosts - that will no doubt ignore its evidence and savage its conclusions. More than eight in 10 Republicans who get their news from Fox News believe the election was stolen. America has experienced brutal battles over its democracy before. The Civil War was fought over whether the Union would remain united and free. The civil rights movement had to overcome entrenched resistance to end apartheid in the South. Now democracy is at stake once more. Will Americans again rally to defend our democracy or will they succumb to a Big Lie grounded in racial animus that will drive our country apart? The Jan. 6 Committee is yet another chapter in that ongoing battle.

his week, Cadillac shared a glimpse of the CELESTIQ show car, which represents the purest expression of Cadillac design, technology, and performance. From first approach, the striking silhouette of the CELESTIQ show car leaves a lasting impression, challenging the ultra-luxury space with the spirit of futurism and the avant-garde. Cadillac’s signature lighting design rises to a new level on the CELESTIQ show car. Unmistakably Cadillac, but with a modern edge, a lively and soulful choreographed symphony of light boldly invites each passenger into the vehicle. “From its unique proportions and a new effortless, sophisticated form language, to the precision and attention to detail, CELESTIQ is unlike anything on the road today,”

said Magalie Debellis, manager, Cadillac Branded Advanced Design. “From its inception, the CELESTIQ show car was crafted to reincarnate the ‘Standard of the World.’” The foundation of CELESTIQ is the modular Ultium battery platform, which enables greater design flexibility. The CELESTIQ design and engineering teams took advantage of the new space and explored opportunities to artfully integrate cutting edge technology. The result is a stunning vehicle with a dramatic presence, a low profile and rearward proportions. Each vehicle offers a curated selection of hand-crafted materials, and each CELESTIQ will be

designed to reflect the individuality of its owner. The vehicles will feature all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, and a full-glass roof. Inside the cabin, CELESTIQ takes the artful integration of technology to new heights, with a customizable experience for drivers and passengers alike. JOBS: Land Your Dream Career With Murphy-Goode Winery One-On-One with Lindsey Perry By Monica Jones, Travel Editor – Stylemagazine.com
T
he path to breaking into the wine industry career can be a bit challenging - not only requiring an immense passion for wine, but also a wealth of knowledge along with an extensive experience in the field. And let’s face it, gaining experience in the field can be difficult to navigate. However, one Sonoma County winery’s innovative recruitment practices have simplified the process for the curious and qualified. When Murphy-Goode Winery announced their now viral «Really Goode Job» contest back in February 2021 it seemed almost too good to be true. A $10,000 monthly salary, free housing and a year›s supply of wine from the brand›s portfolio??? - Unheard of and almost unbelievable for an entry level position, with little to no experience. After receiving over 7,200 applicants, the search was then narrowed down to 17 finalists where Lindsay Perry and Veronica Hebbard were ultimately selected for the opportunity of a lifetime to move to Healdsburg and pursue their passion of working in the wine industry. As Murphy-Goode prepares to relaunch its remarkable yet unconventional campaign once again, we sat down with winner, Lindsay Perry to get up close and personal about her experience, career goals, and creative tips for applicants looking to stand out from the crowd. Dubbed as the “Roadrunner” to those that know her best, Lindsay has always been the type of woman to embrace adventure and seize the right opportunity if presented. A background in digital marketing in Sports and Entertainment, her creative approach to social media management, and her newfound passion for wine education helped land her dream job. Houston Style Magazine: So let’s get right into it. Who was the first person to hear the good news? Lindsay Perry: It’s really a funny story.
8
Lindsey Perry I was back home in Pennsylvania to attend a friend from middle school’s wedding at the time. One of my friends who I’ve lived across the street from since childhood has had two children during the pandemic years. I was telling her about this incredible week-long trip that I just went on while meeting her children for the first time. As I’m holding her two-week old baby, I got a call from a 707 area code and it was Murphy-Goode calling to offer me the position. They asked me if I was busy and I said, “Oh, just holding my friend’s baby right now” and they said oh well you may want to put her down before we give you the news. I ran home, told my parents and they were over the moon with the support. HSM: What advice or tips can you give to potential applicants about the submission process? LP: Bring something to the table. Pitch your passion and your profession. Make a video you feel most comfortable doing, and make sure it conveys who you are.
June 09, 2022 - June 15, 2022
If they love your video and personality from your video that›s how you were selected as a finalist. How creative can you get, plus does it really show who you are on video? One thing that I did to set myself apart was including a QR code link to my resume on my video. I was nervous and hoped they loved my personality, but I think that it helped reinforce who I was. HSM: How do you think Imposter syndrome might prevent someone from applying and what do you say to encourage them? LP: I even thought I wasn›t cut out for it. I wanted to throw my hat in the ring and I didn›t want to say anything . You just gotta do it. If they like you, they like you. I was one of two people who had actual wine certifications, you just had to love wine and want a career in wine to be considered. HSM: What was the most rewarding thing that you learned throughout your journey? LP: I think being able to learn all of the
www.StyleMagazine.com
aspects of the wine business. getting to see the time, effort, and passion that goes into the winemaking process from the beginning. Being up at 6am at the crush pad. It›s a really cool experience. Coming from a marketing background, traveling to the different markets to see how wine is sold and talked about it changed my mind about wine and the beverage industry. HSM: With diversity being at the core of your wine journey how has MurphyGoode aligned with your purpose? LP: We›re focusing on diversity and inclusivity by creating more access through partnerships with organizations l i k e Wi n e U n i f y, B l a c k Wi n e Professionals and the Roots Fund which supports people of color in the wine industry. We›ll also be supporting their scholarship programming with monetary donations so interested candidates can continue their wine education. It›s the perfect kind of partnership to help spread the word about the contest. Murphy-Goode also is creating a second language program to help improve communication amongst the staff. HSM: What›s your favorite MurphyGoode wine of the moment and what›s your go-to wine? LP: I love our Sauvignon Blanc. It›s Fume style so it›s not your typical Sauvignon Blanc style so it›s easy drinking. It›s the perfect wine for the Texas heat. I can›t wait to taste this past year›s vintage because it›ll be cool to say I›ve had my hands in it. I love big bold California Cabs, I also love anything from Columbia Valley and Walla Walla, Washington. Their Chardonnay’s are amazing as well.
A p p l i c a n t s m u s t c re ate and share a short video on why they’re the best candidate for Murphy-Goode’s “Really Goode Job” and submit a video application. Interested applicants have until June 30th to submit their most authentic selves for consideration. In July, applicants will have one last time to sell themselves as MurphyGoode will welcome the finalists to Healdsburg, for in-person interviews to further showcase what makes them the best candidate for “A Really Goode Job.” The role officially starts September 2022 and runs through August 2023.
LOCAL: Houston Health Department Offers Tips For Unusually High Tempatures This Week By StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

he Houston Health Department encourages people to stay safe as the National Weather Service warns of hot weather this week. People are encouraged to take extra precautions to protect themselves from heat-related illness and death. High-risk groups such as adults age 55 and older, children under the age of 4, and people with chronic illness or are either overweight or on certain medications should stay inside air-conditioned buildings between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., the hottest part of the day. The department recommends people protect themselves and their families from potentially deadly heat-related illness. It recommends people: · Increase water consumption. Drink lots of liquids even before getting thirsty, but avoid beverages with caffeine, alcohol, or large amounts of sugar because these can result in the loss of body fluid. · Conduct outdoor work or exercise in the early morning or evening when temperatures are not as high. Outdoor workers should drink plenty of water or electrolyte replacement

beverages and take frequent breaks in the shade or in an air-conditioned facility. People unaccustomed to working or exercising in a hot environment need to start slowly and gradually increase heat exposure over several weeks. · Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that permits the evaporation of perspiration. · Do not leave infants, children, senior citizens, or pets unattended in a parked vehicle, even if the windows are cracked open. Check to make sure everyone is out of the car and don’t overlook children who may have fallen asleep.
· Wear a wide-brimmed hat to help
prevent sunburn as well as heatrelated illness. Apply sunscreen, which protects from the sun’s harmful rays and reduces the risk of sunburn. · Seek accommodations in airconditioned facilities during the heat of the day if the house is not air-conditioned: a relative’s home, multi-service centers, malls, movie theaters, libraries, etc. · Take frequent cool baths or showers if your home is not air-conditioned. · Symptoms of heat exhaustion include weakness, dizziness,

arris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis will join S.H.A.P.E. Community Center officials in celebrating the completion of kitchen upgrades made possible by a $94,368 county grant Commissioner Ellis secured for the Third Ward facility. “The COVID-19 pandemic has shed light on existing inequalities in our communities, including access to healthy, affordable food,” Commissioner Ellis said. “I’m pleased that we can assist S.H.A.P.E. to continuing its more than a half century mission of feeding children and adults, especially during this time when food prices are skyrocketing due to the nation’s highest inflation in four decades.” The improvements coincide with S.H.A.P.E.’s 53rd Founders’ Day that will be celebrated this week as the community center moves forward with programs and services that continue to make a substantial contribution to the economic impact of the Third Ward community, said Shondra Muhammad, S.H.A.P.E.’s Deputy Executive Director. The grant, approved by Commissioners Court in February, also allowed S.H.A.P.E. to purchase and install 15 laptop and 15 desktop computers in its Marcos Mazula Technology Center, which is named after longtime S.H.A.P.E. volunteer and children’s educational advocate who started the center’s first technology program. “S . It takes a team effort to meet the community’s needs and improve the quality of life for people of all ages.” For the kitchen, the funds were used to purchase new flooring, counter, refrigerator, stove and fryer so that S.H.A.P.E. can continue to provide meals weekly to children, adults and seniors. “Upgrading our kitchen café expands our ability to serve the increasing number of people who are experiencing food insecurity, as we all recover from the effects of compounded disasters,” Muhammad said. “Working with the emerging entrepreneurs in our Kitchen Incubator Program, we will be able to host a community kitchen designed to provide healthy, hot meals to those in need.”
SPORTS: Houston TEXANS Wrap-Up OTA's Team Members Making Very Good Impression On Their New Coach By Brian Barefield, Sports Editor – StyleMagazine.com
A
s the Houston Texans are wrapping up their final week of voluntary OTA’s, a couple of former players were out in the early morning Texas heat to observe the different drills the team was going through. One player who stood out from the moment he hit the sidelines was 2022 NFL Hall of Fame finalist Andre Johnson who played for the Texans for 12 out of the 14 years he was in the league. Johnson looked more like a media member on the sideline than a former player; as he looked at the roster, he had in his hands to match names and numbers of players who were getting reps with the second and third units. The Texans players on the field are looking to make an impression on new head coach Lovie Smith whose presence was felt throughout OTA. Although the practices were not mandatory, most of the players attended, looking to make each rep count as the
team looks to improve on its 4-13 record this past season. “Every practice counts,” said coach Smith. “So, we’re taking advantage of them. It’s winding down a little bit. You know, we finish up OTA practices this week and then next week we have our three-day mini-camp and then we take a break.” Taking time away from the field before training camp, which starts in late
July, will be what the Texans rookies will need as they continue to prepare to transition from college superstars to NFL rookies. “I think when initially when you come in, I let the rookies know, the veterans don’t want to hear about you being young, and you don’t know what you’re doing,” said coach Smith while answering questions after practice. “If we as coaches put you out on the foot-

ball field, they expect you to perform. They read the papers, too. They know how you’re drafted, how you’re coming in, and you’re going to have to prove it on the football field, and that’s what these young guys have done. “They seem like they never leave the building and when they get their opportunities, they are stepping up and making plays. Another part of being a rookie is keeping your mouth shut. I don’t want to hear about what you’ve done in the past. Just come in each day and work and they will start doing more. That veteran leadership will start rubbing off on them and that’s kind of what’s happening right now.” Houston will play their first preseason game against the New Orleans Saints on August 13 at NRG Stadium.

ABOUT DEBORAH MOUTON
T
he Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) is pleased to announce the May/June HMAAC artist residency of Deborah Mouton, the internationally known writer, educator, activist, performer, and the first Black Poet Laureate of Houston, Texas. The residency will take place at The Power Center in Houston, Texas and will involve engagement of students from The Imani School. During her HMAAC residency Mouton will review and edit her renowned play The World’s Intermission, which premiered November 12, 2021, at Jones Hall for the Society for the Performing Arts. The play, A Deep Ink Production, focuses on the world’s twoyear pandemic, and how one family dealt with quarantine amidst fragile mental health conditions, rising racial tensions,

This residency allows me to do that, and I am delighted to have Imani School students involved in the project.” Imani Principal Pat Williams sees the residency as supporting the school’s intentions; “At The Imani School we are intentionally igniting a fire within our children that breeds self-confidence, faith, and academic achievement, and this residency helps us do that.” For HMAAC CEO John Guess,
Jr. this residency is about exploring where we have been and our strengths as we move forward. “As we continue to adjust to our new pandemic normal,” he indicated, “this play reminds us of our resilience and the human gift of adaptability,” HMAAC Board President Cindy Miles added, “We are so delighted to bring the talent of Deborah Mouton into a community of color, and we could not have a better partner in this endeavor than The Power Center and the Imani School and its Principal Pat Williams.” The culmination of the residency will be performances of The World’s
