Joe Biden on last week's mass shooting in #UvaldeTX: "Don't tell me we can't have an impact on this carnage...When we passed the assault weapons ban, mass shootings went down. When the law expired, mass shootings tripled. The idea that an 18-year-old kid can walk into a gun store and buy 2 assault weapons—It's just wrong."

TRUMP LIED COMMENTARY

By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

T

he Jan. 6 Committee has detailed what at some level we already knew. Trump lost the election. He knew it. His advisers knew it. His Justice Department knew it. The courts confirmed it. There was no evidence of voter fraud. Trump lied - and continues lying to this day. No one likes a sore loser, but Trump would not accept that he lost. He railed about fraud so often that he convinced his followers that the election must have been stolen. He used the false claims to raise a stunning amount of money - $250 million - for an election defense fund that was a fiction. He used the money for his political and personal purposes. He not only misled those who believed in him, he ripped them off. So, it goes. That’s not the real scandal. We have had a sense about Trump for a long time. Even his supporters understood he was a scoundrel, they just mistakenly thought he was their scoundrel. Those who got misled and fooled aren’t really the problem. The problem is the cynical politicians who echoed the lies - and knew better. They not only re-enforced the lies - they also acted on them. Across the country, Republicans used Trump’s lies not just to demand recounts of ballots in various states, they used them to change the law in very specific ways. They made voting more difficult - particularly for working and poor people who live in urban areas. They reduced early voting days, ended voting on Sunday, limited voting places in urban areas, made vote by mail more difficult, demanded new forms of ID that discriminated against students and minorities, and more. Second, they made the possibility of distorting the vote more likely.

4

51

January 6th Sacking of America's Capital Was Led By Donald J Trump Will America Hold Him Accountable For His Lie They ejected non-partisan election officials and replaced them with partisans. They gave state legislatures greater power to overturn elections whose results the majority doesn’t like. By 2024, as many as 20 of the 50 states will run under election orders that are much more exposed to partisan manipulation. Third, at the national level, they blocked every effort to reform the process. They blocked revival of the Voting Rights Act which used to enjoy bipartisan support. They blocked efforts to perfect the electoral system and protect it from partisan meddling. They blocked reforms that would make it easier to register, harder to gerrymander districts, and set national standards as a minimum for the country. The cynicism of these politicians is clear. They assume that Americans won’t let issues of democracy define their vote. They assume that not

June 16, 2022 - June 22, 2022

only will they pay no political cost for undermining the democracy - but they will also be rewarded for it. The Trump lies fuel the anger of the Republican base - and dismay those who oppose those lies. The former is more likely to vote; the latter more likely to be turned off. Are these Republican cynics, right? Pollsters suggest they are. Voters are concerned about the price of food and gas, jobs and the economy, crime, and other concerns that impact their daily lives. They assume the existence of the democracy. They assume that the debates over reforms are questions of partisanship, not patriotism. A likely result is that Trump’s Big Lie may end up discrediting him, but not the Republican politicians who joined in echoing it and cowered before Trump’s wrath. To date in the Republican primaries, those who stood up to Trump have not fared

www.StyleMagazine.com

well, those who kowtowed to him have done better. That is where we are. The Jan. 6 Committee will prove its case - Trump lied and tried to overturn an election he knew he lost. Now voters must decide. Will they reward those who spread the lie or hold their representatives accountable? Many commentators say that the committee has put Trump in the dock. In fact, it is our democracy that is in the dock. Will it be defended or deformed? Will it end strengthened or undermined? We need a new surge from idealists and reformers to overcome the cynics that put democracy at risk.

LOCAL: Houston Health Department Offers Tips For Unusually High Temperatures This Week By StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

T

he Houston Health Department encourages people to stay safe as the National Weather Service warns of hot weather this week. People are encouraged to take extra precautions to protect themselves from heat-related illness and death. High-risk groups such as adults age 55 and older, children under the age of 4, and people with chronic illness or are either overweight or on certain medications should stay inside air-conditioned buildings between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., the hottest part of the day. The department recommends people protect themselves and their families from potentially deadly heat-related illness. It recommends people: · Increase water consumption. Drink lots of liquids even before getting thirsty, but avoid beverages with caffeine, alcohol, or large amounts of sugar because these can result in the loss of body fluid. · Conduct outdoor work or exercise in the early morning or evening when temperatures are not as high. Outdoor workers should drink plenty of water or electrolyte replacement

People unaccustomed to working or exercising in a hot environment need to start slowly and gradually increase heat exposure over several weeks. · Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that permits the evaporation of perspiration. · Do not leave infants, children, senior citizens, or pets unattended in a parked vehicle, even if the windows are cracked open. Check to make sure everyone is out of the car and don’t overlook children who may have fallen asleep.

SPORTS: Houston TEXANS Wrap-Up OTA's Team Members Making Very Good Impression On Their New Coach By Brian Barefield, Sports Editor – StyleMagazine.com

A

s the Houston Texans are wrapping up their final week of voluntary OTA’s, a couple of former players were out in the early morning Texas heat to observe the different drills the team was going through. One player who stood out from the moment he hit the sidelines was 2022 NFL Hall of Fame finalist Andre Johnson who played for the Texans for 12 out of the 14 years he was in the league. Johnson looked more like a media member on the sideline than a former player; as he looked at the roster, he had in his hands to match names and numbers of players who were getting reps with the second and third units. The Texans players on the field are looking to make an impression on new head coach Lovie Smith whose presence was felt throughout OTA. Although the practices were not mandatory, most of the players attended, looking to make each rep count as the team looks to improve on its 4-13 record this past season.

“Every practice counts,” said coach Smith. “So, we’re taking advantage of them. It’s winding down a little bit. You know, we finish up OTA practices this week and then next week we have our three-day mini-camp and then we take a break.” Taking time away from the field before training camp, which starts in late

July, will be what the Texans rookies will need as they continue to prepare to transition from college superstars to NFL rookies. “I think when initially when you come in, I let the rookies know, the veterans don’t want to hear about you being young, and you don’t know what you’re doing,” said coach Smith while

answering questions after practice. “If we as coaches put you out on the football field, they expect you to perform. They read the papers, too. They know how you’re drafted, how you’re coming in, and you’re going to have to prove it on the football field, and that’s what these young guys have done. “They seem like they never leave the building and when they get their opportunities, they are stepping up and making plays. Another part of being a rookie is keeping your mouth shut. I don’t want to hear about what you’ve done in the past. Just come in each day and work and they will start doing more. That veteran leadership will start rubbing off on them and that’s kind of what’s happening right now.” Houston will play their first preseason game against the New Orleans Saints on August 13 at NRG Stadium.

ART: Ernie Barnes' 'The Sugar Shack' On View at MFA

Houston Art Collector Bill Perkins, New Owner Has Generously Placed The Iconic 1976 Works On Display June 15th thru December 31, 2022 By Kathy Coleman, ARTS Editor – StyleMagazine.com • Newswire

n Wednesday, June 15, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston placed on view The Sugar Shack, Ernie Barnes’ iconic 1976 painting of vibrant, ecstatic figures dancing in a crowded Black music hall in segregated mid-century North Carolina. The painting is on loan to the MFAH through December 31 from Houston collector Bill Perkins, who acquired The Sugar Shack at auction last month. “I want to thank Bill Perkins for his generous loan to the Museum of Ernie Barnes’ extraordinary painting,” commented Gary Tinterow, Director, Margaret Alkek Williams Chair, of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. “The Sugar Shack will take pride of place in the Museum’s newest home for modern and contemporary art, the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building, where it can be appreciated by our visitors in the context of works in the permanent collection.” “Lara and I are thrilled to be able to share this phenomenal painting with all of Houston,” commented Bill Perkins. “As I’ve said many times, acquiring The Sugar Shack was for me the realization of a childhood dream. I know that Ernie Barnes’ masterwork will be as inspirational for all those who will see it as it has been for us.” Barnes painted two versions of The Sugar Shack. The first was acquired by Motown star Marvin Gaye, who featured it on the cover of his 1976 album I Want You. Barnes created this second version, in 1976, and the painting gained still wider currency when it was added to the end credits of the groundbreaking 1970s CBS sit-com Good Times, which centered on a Black family in the Chicago housing projects with an artist-son named J. J., played by Jimmie Walker. Barnes frequently recalled the inspiration for the painting as a childhood memory of sneaking into a local dance hall called the Armory. “It was the first time my innocence met with the sins of dance,” he told an interviewer in 2008. The vivid image, with its dynamic, elongated figures dominating the packed space of a dance floor and illuminated by a cone of light from a single bulb, reflects what became known as the Black Romantic tradition, as writer Jasmine Sanders has noted: Barnes’ “mode of kinetic figuration, animating black existence with just enough verisimilitude, influenced a generation of black portraitists; meanwhile, The Sugar Shack itself became a staple in black homes, its popularity embodying an act of communal creative expression on par with the painting’s exultant scene.”

the captain of the football team. Barnes enrolled at the allBlack North Carolina College at Durham (formerly North Carolina College for Negroes, now North Carolina Central University) majoring in art on a full athletic scholarship. After college, he played professional football into the mid-1960s, before devoting himself fulltime to his painting, in Los Angeles.
