COMMENTARY

DO TRUMP'S ACTIONS MEET THE TEST OF TREASON? By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

W

ill Donald Trump be held accountable for the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 and what was a multi-layered conspiracy to overturn the results of the presidential election? Attorney General Merrick Garland has stated that “We’re just going to follow the facts wherever they lead … to hold all perpetrators who are criminally responsible for January 6 accountable, regardless of their level, [or]their position…” The January 6 Special Committee has systematically revealed the facts, confirming what Republican Liz Cheney stated when she announced she would vote to impeach Donald Trump: “On January 6, 2021, a violent mob attacked the United States Capitol to obstruct the process of our democracy and stop the counting of presidential electoral votes. This insurrection caused injury, death and destruction in the most sacred space in our Republic… The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack. Everything that followed was his doing. None of this would have happened without the President. The President could have immediately and forcefully intervened to stop the violence. He did not. There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution.” The Committee’s investigation confirmed what Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell stated that ““The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people, and they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal

President Donald Trump greets the crowd on Jan. 6, 2021, in Washington, D.C. ((Tasos Katopodis/Getty Images/TNS)) government which they did not like.” This is a question of treason, a charge that should not be made lightly. The Constitution defines the crime: “Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.” Do Trump’s actions meet the test of Treason? Professor Carlton F.W. Larson, author of “On Treason: A Citizen’s Guide to the Law” notes that the Framers of the Constitution had “a very specific image in mind – men gathering with guns, forming an army and marching on the seat of government.” Larson notes that few events in American history have matched that description as clearly as the sacking of the Capitol on Jan. 6. And their purpose assaulted the very heart of democracy: trying to stop

June 23, 2022 - June 29, 2022

the congressional proceeding that would formally certify the transfer of power of a democratic election. As Larson noted, “At some point, you have to say, if that’s not levying war against the United States, then what on earth is?” The Justice Department has prosecuted over 800 people who participated in the attack on the Capitol. The most serious charges were directed at leaders of the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers – gangs that conspired clearly to breach the Capitol to stop the proceedings, and possibly kidnap or kill public officials. They were charged – and some have pled guilty to –seditious conspiracy. They thought they were doing the bidding of Donald Trump. Reviewing the evidence in a hearing on whether to honor the subpoenas of the Committee, a federal judge found that Donald Trump had “most

www.StyleMagazine.com

likely” committed at least two crimes: obstructing an official proceeding and engaging in a conspiracy to defraud the United States. He was not asked to rule on whether Trump had committed treason. Prosecuting a former president is something that no prosecutor would take on lightly. A trial would no doubt be a bitter national trauma. Yet, the very essence of the rule of law is that no person – not a governor or a general, a billionaire or an oligarch, or even a former president is above the law. Donald Trump’s responsibility for the crimes that occurred is clear. And worse, he not only has expressed no remorse for his actions, he has spread the Big Lie relentlessly, and enlisted partisans across the country to attack election officials, change election laws, and leave the country more vulnerable to another assault on democracy. Accountability under the law serves as a deterrence for those who would seek to violate it in the future. That is why the Justice Department has prosecuted 800 perpetrators with more to come. And that is why the attorney general must follow the evidence and bring to justice all those responsible for the attack, including the undeniable instigator – Donald Trump.

his week the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit vacated an injunction that prohibited Attorney General Ken Paxton from enforcing SB1’s anti-solicitation provision against the Harris County Elections Administrator. County Attorney Christian D. Menefee, Harris County’s chief civil legal officer, gave the following statement:

“I’m glad the courts made clear that Attorney General Ken Paxton does not have the power to seek monetary penalties from election officials who simply want to encourage Texans to exercise their right to vote by mail. This war on election officials has to stop. Government should be trying to expand opportunities for voters, not restricting their access to the polls and punishing the hard-working folks who run our elections.”

The Harris County Attorney’s Office represents the county in all civil matters including lawsuits. Menefee leads an office of 250 attorneys and staff members. Houston Health Department Now Offering COVID-19 Shots For Children Six-Months and Older

COVID-19 Vaccinations For 6-Months To 5-Years Old

C

hildren as young as six months old are now eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine at any of the Houston Health Department’s four health centers. Under the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), close to 20 million children 6 months through 5 years of age may receive their first dose of either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. “Children under age 5 were the last group that remained highly vulnerable because of the lack of access to an approved vaccine,” said Dr. David Persse, chief medical officer for the City of Houston. “Vaccinating children will not only help keep Houston safer from COVID but also bring a sense of relief to parents since they have long awaited this vaccine.” The Moderna vaccine is administered in a 2-dose series, with the second shot given a month after the first. The Pfizer vaccine is given in a 3-dose series with the second shot administered three weeks after the first, and the third given two months later. COVID-19 vaccines have undergone and will continue to undergo the most intensive safety monitoring in U.S. history. Children may experience fewer side effects than adults after receiving the vaccine including pain, swelling, and redness in the arm where the shot was given, fever, tiredness, headache, chills, muscle or joint pain, and swollen lymph nodes. Parents may see their children younger than three years old feel irritated, sleepy, or have a loss of appetite. The department will also offer the vaccine at multi-service centers on a rotating schedule.

AUTO: Buick Commits To All-Electric Portfolio By End Of Decade Buick Debuts New Logo and Confirms "Electra" EV Coming Soon To North America In 2024 By Stylemagazine.com – Newswire

B

Buick's EV Line Will Carry The 'Electra' Name

uick is set to embark on a brand transformation that will fully electrify its lineup in North America, led by a new badge and brand identity. In support of General Motors’ vision of a zero-emissions, all-electric future, Buick will bring its first electric vehicle to market for North America in 2024. Buick’s future EV products will carry the Electra name, drawing inspiration from the brand’s history. “The Buick brand is committed to an all-electric future by the end of this

decade,” said Duncan Aldred, global vice president, Buick and GMC. “Buick’s new logo, use of the Electra naming series and a new design look for our future products will transform the brand.” The new badge, which is the first significant change to the emblem since 1990, will be body-mounted onto the front fascia of Buick products starting next year. No longer a circular logo, the badge incorporates a sleek, horizontally aligned layout that builds upon Buick’s recognizable tri-shield. The redesigned columns of the tri-shield,

which have roots in company founder David Dunbar Buick’s ancestral heraldry, incorporate fluid movements that will be found in future vehicle design. “Our forthcoming products will adopt a new design language that emphasizes a sleek, dynamic and forward-looking appearance,” said Sharon Gauci, executive director, Global Buick and GMC Design. “Our exteriors will incorporate fluid movements that contrast with tension to convey motion. Interiors will balance modern design, new technologies and attention to detail to evoke warmth and a rich sensory experience.” The Buick Wildcat EV concept illustrates the new global brand design language that will be apparent in production vehicles going forward. The new Buick badge and design will debut on production vehicles starting next year. In addition to the new badge, Buick’s revamped brand identity will also include new typography, an updat-

ed color palette and a new marketing approach. Buick will update its physical and digital properties over the next 12 to 16 months. The brand transformation will also include a more seamless connectivity experience, as new retail Buick vehicles in the U.S. will include three years of OnStar and Connected Services Premium Plan1. Services such as remote key fob, Wi-Fi data and OnStar safety services will be included as standard equipment on the vehicle and included in the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price starting this month. As Buick looks toward the future, its products continue to perform well in the U.S. and globally. Last year was Buick’s best sales year ever for its current lineup, with U.S. retail sales up 7.6%. This portfolio helps attract a significant number of new customers to the brand, with nearly 73% of sales coming from customers that are new to Buick.

Secrets, Spells and Snake Eyes

Title: Secrets, Spells and Snake Eyes Series: Sarah Doucette Jean-Louis Mysteries #2 Published by: Pushed Times Publishing Release Date: May 18, 2017 Pages: 168 ISBN13: 978-0990803218 Buy the Book: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, IndieBound

Back home from a Godforsaken Louisiana family reunion, Sarah Doucette Jean-Louis jumps heart first into a murder investigation with her hot and sexy former attorney, Manuel. It’s a new life for the Oakland family therapist post-scandal. Manuel’s client is charged with murder and he wants Sarah to use her gift of visions to help his investigator find the real killer. In her unique and humorous style, Sarah brings her head-spinning psychic intuition, large vodka bottles and a few other surprises to the case. Yadira Lopez’s stepson is the accused, but Sarah feels there’s something spine chilling and eerie about Yadira. Sarah props up her visions with help from some unbelievable sources. And if the case weren’t complicated and odd enough, Sarah’s life long nemesis, cousin Stacy, shows up in California. Her year will be mysterious and murderous with a touch of crazy! Life remains a contrast of contemporary northern California and old-world Louisiana Creole traditions for Sarah. She is a trained family therapist with volatile relationships. Her background of science and logic is defiled by persistent visions into the future. And while it is Creole tradition for a woman to marry, Sarah has had many loves but no husband. In Secrets, Spells and Snake Eyes, Sarah’s second journey, she learns to handle her mystical second sight and prepares to fall in love—again. We laugh and feel a bit tipsy from all of the action and the Sunday martini brunches with her girlfriends. Laissez les bon temp rouler, mon cher!

MUSIC: Beyoncé Drops 'Break My Soul' And It's The Dance Track You Need By Lisa Respers France, www.CNN.com / www.StyleMagazine.com

Beyoncé's

New Song Unleashes Great Job Resignation Vibes

elcome back Bey. Beyoncé released her new single early on Monday and it’s safe to say “Break My Soul” did its part to break the internet. With its house music vibe, the dance track marked the return the Bey Hive (as her devout fan base is known) was more than ready for. “You won’t break my soul,” Beyoncé sings in the chorus with lyrics that let it be known she›s fully aware of her power. “Imma let down my hair/’Cause I lost my mind,” she sings. “Bey is back and I’m sleeping real good at night/The queens in the front and the doms in the back/Ain’t takin’ no flicks but the whole

clique snapped.” It also reunites Queen Bey with bounce music legend Big Freedia, who appeared on Beyoncé’s hit 2016 song “Formation.” “It feels surreal to be on the track with the Queen Beyonce once again,” Big Freedia tweeted. “I’m so honored to be (a part) of this special moment I’m forever grateful lord. Someone please catch me.” The superstar had announced on Monday that the song would release at midnight, but made a surprise early drop on Tidal, the streaming service owned by her husband, rapper Jay-Z. “Break My Soul” is the first single off of her forthcoming “Renais-

sance” album which is set to come out July 29. In 2020, Beyoncé’ released the single “Black Parade” in honor of Junteenth. The Grammy winner’s last visual album, “Black Is King,” released that same year as a companion project to her curated album “The Lion King: The Gift.” She voiced the character of Nala in Disney’s 2019 “Lion King” remake. Her last full-length album was “Lemonade” in 2016.

BREAK MY SOUL

ederal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell wants to increase joblessness in the US in order to save the economy. But Beyoncé may beat him to it. The multi-hyphenate artist’s latest single, “Break My Soul,” which dropped late Monday, begs listeners to “release” themselves from their 9-5, saying “I just quit my job, I’m gonna find new drive, damn, they work me so damn hard.” Immediately dubbed an “anthem for the Great Resignation” on social media, fans didn’t skip a beat, posting memes and all-cap tweets aligning themselves with Queen Bey’s motivational message to ditch hustle culture and get back to “sleeping really good at night.” “Me sending my resignation email because Beyoncé told me to,” was a common theme online. The song, Beyoncé’s first single since Juneteenth last year, blends 1990s club culture with 2022 Pride vibes. It’s an inescapable summer psalm, with heavy sampling from the early-90s hit “Show Me Love” by Robin S and vocals from Big Freedia, a rapper best known for her New Orleans “bounce music,” aka bass-heavy booty-shaking. “Release your anger/Release your mind/Release your job/Release the tide/Release your trade/Release the stress/Release your love/Forget the rest,” sings Big Freedia, lyrics that embrace both the socio-economic pandemic fatigue and the desire to break free of it. Dubbed the “Great Resignation,” the offset between job vacancies and job seekers means there are now almost two job openings for every unemployed worker, a situation that Fed Chair Powell has called “unhealthy.” Amid this backdrop, “Break My Soul” resonated immediately with fans — and economists.

STATE: STATES MUST ACT NOW TO PREVENT NEXT MASS SHOOTINGS 13 Texas Mayor's Call On State Legislators To Take Action, NOW! By StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

T

exas’ Big City Mayors, a bipartisan coalition of mayors from our state’s most populous cities, are calling upon our state leadership to take immediate action to prevent the next mass shooting in Texas. We represent a continuum of political ideology and have come together because we know most Texans have a strong desire for common sense reform to protect our children. As mayors, we believe the legislature and executive leaders can come together to

find the right solutions for Texas. We are specifically calling upon Governor Abbott to call a Special Session and add the following to the call:

• • • •

Require universal background checks for gun purchases. Increase the age to purchase assault weapons in Texas to 21. Pass Red Flag laws to identify threats before shootings. Significant increase in mental health support funding.

Train and properly resource school safety officers

These reforms, supported by most Texans, would have prevented the shooters in El Paso and Uvalde from obtaining their weapons. All our communities have supported our local law enforcement during these difficult times of civil unrest and pandemic-related violence. Pursuing gun policies that ease access to firearms makes the jobs of our first responders even more difficult. Families are asking us how many more shootings must happen before we act. The communities of Uvalde, El Paso, Santa Fe, and Sutherland Springs deserve better. In response to mass shootings—Florida passed red flag laws, and we can do the same here in Texas. In the immediacy after the shooting, state leaders specifically spoke about mental health disparities. We agree with the need to address this long-neglected area. Texas is ranked 50th in the nation for mental health care access by Mental Health America. We should do all we can to lift our state up

from the bottom of this list. There have been welcome and strategic proposals presented by other state leaders regarding mental health programs, specifically for students in school. We agree that significant investments in behavioral health, several magnitudes greater than what has been mentioned, are both needed and urgent. Addressing gaps in mental health care access would require the state legislature to massively expand existing programs. This would mean more funding for school counselors, social workers, and support staff for public schools as well as enhancing accessibility at our mental health authorities. The lack of statewide access for mental health services has caused our first responders, especially our police, to all too often to be the only response to a person in crisis. We can better support our first responders by funding mental health programs that allow for patient access and care instead of leaving law enforcement to handle these complex situations. The problem that we face as a state, and that local law enforcement faces every day, is the ease with which dangerous individuals can obtain and access these weapons. Protecting the 2nd Amendment means passing responsible policies that a wide majority of law-abiding gun owner’s support. We cannot stand idly by while more of our fellow Texans, often our children and law enforcement officers, are laid to rest as the result of another preventable shooting. Action is the only thing that will save more lives.
