COMMENTARY

Are you one of the more than 100 million Americans who live somewhere that was (or still is) under a heat advisory?

As I write these words, the mercury is soaring. The world is reeling from the deadly impact of extreme heat and weather events. This is climate change in action. We are living it. And the thermometer-busting temperatures are just the tip of the (melting) iceberg.

Jocelyn Richards of Manassas, Virginia is currently staying in Maine to escape the summer heat in the South. She suffers from Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) from past exposure to mold. Heat is a major trigger for her due to Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), a common component of CIRS.

Richards says, “Not only is the heat itself a major trigger, but heat releases VOCs [volatile organic compounds] from asphalt. It becomes unbearable to even take a walk outside or run errands because it’s so difficult to breathe from the VOCs in the air. Along with other MCAS symptoms triggered by the heat like tachycardia, high blood pressure, and dizziness, it can quickly turn into a medical emergency if I’m out in the extreme heat for even half an hour.”

Richards is still looking for a permanent place to reside with mild temperatures and low levels of the environmental toxins that also trigger her illness. And stories like hers are increasingly common.

A host of illnesses are caused or dangerously exacerbated by extreme heat. Air quality is generally worse during periods of extreme heat. Ground-level ozone – the main component in smog –presents one such threat. It is produced when pollutants, like those from burning fossil fuels, react with heat and sunlight. The stagnant, hot air during heat waves worsens ozone pollution.

The infamous 2022 summer heat wave in Europe is now thought to be re-

THE SCORCHING TRUTH: EXTREME HEAT IS A WAKE-UP CALL TO ACT ON CLIMATE CHANGE

sponsible for up to 70,000 excess deaths, with ozone pollution playing a big part.

Julie Nicely, an atmospheric chemist at the University of Maryland who worked on a report on the 2022 heat wave, noted the mix of conditions created by such a heat wave “is very bad for the lungs and the cardiovascular system. It's just very unhealthy.”

Then there is the smoke from wildfires. In addition to the destruction they cause, wildfires are making it harder for millions of Americans to breathe. It is a problem that is getting worse with longer, hotter fire seasons – another feature of climate change. The still-burning Post Fire northwest of Los Angeles is just the most recent high-profile fire in California to get national attention. And wildfire smoke has now become an issue for even more parts of the country.

At one point last summer, Chicago officially had the worst air quality in the world. Other major American cities across the Midwest and East Coast were similarly impacted, as smoke pollution from Canadian wildfires poured over the continent. The threat of a repeat this summer is still there. Wildfires in Canada are still raging, and experts say the 2024

season still could be as bad as or worse than last year’s.

In places where the wildfires occur, once the flames subside, flooding becomes a threat. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the removal of trees and shrubs increases the the speed and volume of runoff and hot fires can “create a water-repellent layer of topsoil, which further amplifies runoff volume and speed,” increasing the risk of flash floods.

The heat itself dries out the ground and makes water absorption more difficult, which creates a threat of flash floods. And as the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences points out, “Warmer air holds more moisture, resulting in heavy rainfall, snowstorms, and flooding.” And “warming seawater can fuel stronger, more destructive hurricanes.” NOAA predicts an 85% chance of an above-normal hurricane season this year.

Beyond the threat of hurricanes along our eastern and southern coasts, inland storms are a growing threat for more and more Americans. The regions impacted by serious tornados are expand-

ing. And once-rare derechos, another kind of incredibly destructive windstorm, are becoming more frequent.

Sadly, the list goes on. Around the world, threats from increasing temperatures include: rising sea levels, food insecurity from the loss of land suitable for crop cultivation, increased risk of infectious disease outbreaks and another pandemic like COVID-19, and the extinction of pollinators that sustain the natural life cycles on which we all depend. But although the situation is dire, we cannot give in to despair.

We must invest in climate-resilient infrastructure and support communities most affected by climate change. The more than $1 billion investment by the Biden-Harris administration to expand shade-producing and air-cleaning tree canopies in cities across the country is one example. I was recently in Michigan with US Department of Agriculture Undersecretary Homer Wilkes to promote the many benefits of the urban forestry initiative in that state.

At the end of the day, though, when it comes to the cascade of devastation caused by rising temperatures, there can be no substitute for tackling the climate crisis head on. First and foremost, that means hastening our transition from an economy that runs on fossil fuels to one powered by clean, renewable energy. The extreme heat and weather events we're experiencing are not only a wakeup call. They are an immediate call to action to redouble our efforts towards that transition.

Houston City Council Member Edward Pollard, re-elected last fall to represent District J, continues to prove that being fiscally prudent is his top priority. His recent votes against major budget proposals and contracts highlight his commitment to fair and responsible governance.

A Champion for Taxpayer Fairness

Pollard stood firm against the $74.3 million budget passed by Mayor John Whitmire, the $1.5 billion contract with Houston Firefighters, and the $650 million in back pay proposed to be financed by a 30-year bond. "I’m all for fairness for the firefighters but I’m also for fairness for the taxpayers of the city," Pollard stated. His stance reflects a deep concern for the financial burden such measures would impose on future generations.

Deep Roots in Southwest Houston

A native of southwest Houston, Pollard has a personal connection to the area he represents. Having graduated from all Houston ISD schools, followed by college, law school, and earning a Harvard Business certificate, he built his own business in District J. His deep ties to the community were reflected in his strong re-election, where he secured 63% of the vote.

Advocating for Fiscal Responsibility

Pollard voiced concerns over the

long-term financial implications of a 30-year bond to pay firefighter salaries. He emphasized the lack of incentives for firefighters to reside in Houston, with some currently living as far away as San Antonio and Florida. This distance could pose challenges during emergencies, where prompt response times are crucial.

Financial Transparency and Youth Outreach

Residents of Pollard’s Sharpstown and Gulfton area district are particularly worried about escalating costs. Pollard has been vocal in his criticisms of the Mayor and City Attorney Arturo Michel regarding incentive pay and the rising costs of firefighter raises. He pointed out that while there are incentives for bilingual firefighters and those with college degrees, there are no promotional opportunities within

the Houston Fire Department tied to these qualifications, unlike in the Houston Police Department or Houston ISD.

Seeking Transparency and Accountability

Pollard has consistently pressed for transparency and accountability in city finances. During a heated exchange with Mayor Whitmire, he demanded clarity on the source of funding for the firefighter contract. Whitmire’s vague references to potential state and county funds did not satisfy Pollard, who insisted on knowing the specific financial impact on individual homeowners and commercial property taxpayers in Houston. "We have a responsibility to the taxpayers of this city to know what the real costs are and how this city is going to pay for it," Pollard asserted.

A Voice for Diverse Communities

Alongside Council Member Tiffani Thomas, who also voted against the budget, Pollard represents a new wave of leadership in Houston. Both are young African Americans representing diverse districts, with Pollard being the first from his district.

The Biden-Harris Campaign has made a significant move in securing support from Black voters by committing to a $1.5 million advertising buy with the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA). This partnership, which highlights the importance of the Black Press of America, aims to amplify the campaign’s message across the nation. The announcement was made at the NNPA’s 2024 Annual National Convention held in Baltimore, Maryland, from June 19-22, 2024

Jasmine Harris, the Director of National Black Media for Biden-Harris 2024, emphasized the historic nature of this investment, stating, “In August of last year, our campaign announced the earliest and largest investment into Black media for any reelection campaign in history. This partnership with the NNPA continues those efforts and will strengthen our work in meeting Black voters where they are, to underscore the stakes of this election for Black America. President Biden and Vice President Harris are responsible for creating millions of new jobs for Black workers and record-low Black unemployment. Black America has far too much to lose this election.”

The Chairman of the NNPA, Bobby R. Henry Sr. , also stressed the importance of this financial support. “It is

extremely important to show support for the business side of the Black Press owned by Black business leaders. Verbal support is good, but financial support is better,” he remarked.

This year marks the 197th anniversary of the Black Press of America. NNPA President and CEO, Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., acknowledged the campaign’s responsiveness to the needs of Black Amer-

ica through this advertising initiative. “The Biden-Harris Campaign is being responsive to the interests of Black America through the campaign’s advertising initiatives with the National Newspapers Publishers Association. The Black vote throughout the United States will be a key determinative factor in the outcome of the 2024 national elections. We profoundly thank the Biden-Harris 2024 Campaign,” he concluded.

The Biden-Harris campaign’s commitment to the NNPA not only signifies their dedication to engaging with Black voters but also reinforces their broader strategy to ensure that their message reaches every corner of the community. This substantial advertising investment is a testament to the critical role that the Black Press of America plays in shaping public opinion and mobilizing voters.

For the readers of Houston Style Magazine, this development underscores the campaign’s recognition of the power and influence of Black media and its unwavering commitment to addressing the unique needs and concerns of Black communities across the nation.

LAWSON WITH $1 MILLION DONATION TO FIVE UNIVERSITIES

n Avenue Baptist Church (WABC), the historic church founded by Rev. William A. Lawson, is set to commemorate his remarkable legacy with a generous $1 million donation. In honor of what would have been Rev. Lawson’s 96th birthday on June 28, WABC will distribute this amount equally among five esteemed universities, continuing his mission of promoting education and community upliftment.

Rev. Dr. Marcus D. Cosby, Senior Pastor of WABC, announced this tribute during a recent Sunday service. He emphasized that the church’s commitment to celebrating Rev. Lawson’s life and work extends beyond his earthly presence. “We still care for and love on pastor even in memoriam,” Rev. Cosby remarked. “For the work he consistently did throughout his life to ensure that men and women have an expansive mind to be brilliant as he was brilliant, we are establishing endowed scholarships at five universities to continue the work and witness of Pastor William Alexander Lawson.”

The endowed scholarships, reflecting Rev. Lawson's dedication to education and equality, will benefit Texas Southern University, Prairie View A&M University, Rice University, University of Houston, and Rev. Lawson’s alma mater, Tennessee State

University. Each institution will receive $200,000 carry on the values Rev. Lawson cherished.

Rev. Cosby added, “We are going to make sure that scholarship and brilliance is still a thing that should be honored and rewarded. So we are going to give those

institutions $200,000. And we thank God for the privilege to do just that.”

Rev. William A. Lawson, affectionately known as “Houston’s Pastor,” founded WABC in June 1962. Under his leadership, the church grew from a small congregation of 13 members to a thriving

community of over 12,000. His influence extended far beyond the pulpit as he became a prominent figure in the civil rights movement, working tirelessly to desegregate Houston’s schools, promote equality, and bridge societal gaps.

Rev. Lawson’s profound impact on faith, justice, and community service has left an indelible mark on the city and its residents.

After 42 years of dedicated service, Rev. Lawson retired in 2002, passing the mantle to Rev. Dr. Marcus D. Cosby. Today, Rev. Cosby continues to build on Lawson’s legacy, emphasizing service and ministering to the total person.

Rev. Lawson passed away on May 14, 2024, at the age of 95. His legacy, however, lives on through the ongoing work of WABC and the countless lives he touched.
