SCOTUS GUARANTEES THAT POOR WOMEN WILL SUFFER By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

I

n their decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the six right-wing judicial zealots on the Supreme Court scorned legal precedent and mocked history to deprive women of equal citizenship under the law. No one should be fooled. The Dobbs case, a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court that held the Constitution of the United States does not confer any right to abortion, overruling Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, addressed a Mississippi anti-abortion law, but it shattered the foundation of equal justice under the law for women. It wrenched the most intimate choice about their bodies and their life from women and gave the right to decide to the states. And, as Justice Clarence Thomas detailed in his utterly unprincipled and hypocritical concurring opinion, the Court’s rightwing majority now has its sights on the right to contraception, the right to same-sex sexual activity and the right of gay couples to marry. (Thomas, characteristically and hypocritically, did not mention the right to interracial marriage, equally at risk from the decision, but omitted presumably because he enjoys that right). The right-wing activist majority invoked the doctrine of “originalism,” suggesting that a constitutional right must be found either in the plain words of the Constitution or in the concurrent history - either of the founding or of the passage of the 14th Amendment in question under Roe. Remarkably, as historian Jill Lepore notes, the Court’s zealots take no notice of the fact that at the time of the Constitution or the passage of the 14th Amendment, women had no legal

In fact, at the passage of the Constitution, the majority of Americans, including women and people of color, had no right to vote or to run for office. It is not surprising that the men involved in framing the Constitution or the amendments would overlook the question of women’s rights. But even that assumption is an insult to any serious historical record. In historical reality, women’s right to their own bodies, particularly around the question of intercourse, conception and pregnancy, was central to the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments passed after the Civil War to end slavery and give African Americans equal rights under the law. Under slavery, the sexual exploitation and forced pregnancies of Black women were central to the economy of the plantation. Slaves were

valuable property. Black women were raped and impregnated, and had their babies sold off from them as a matter of commerce. Ending forced sexual and reproductive servitude for Black women - and providing personhood for their offspring - was central to the passage of the 13th and 14th Amendments that abolished slavery and guaranteed all people equal protection under the law. As law professor Michele Goodwin concludes, “Mandated, forced or compulsory pregnancy - ripping the choice of pregnancy from the mother to the state - is a direct violation of the 13th Amendment’s prohibition against involuntary servitude, as well as the 14th Amendment’s defense of privacy and freedom.” In their peremptory decision, the six reactionary activists essentially erased the reality of Black women’s

servitude and their liberation from their constitutional history. The stakes involved are matters literally of life and death. Women are 14 times more likely to die by carrying a pregnancy to term than by having an abortion. Those who suffer most are poor women. Most poor women are white, yet Black women are over three times as likely to die by carrying a pregnancy to term than white women. In Mississippi, the state that Dobbs gave the right to force women to carry a pregnancy to term, a Black woman is 118 times as likely to die by carrying a pregnancy to term than by having an abortion. The six judges distorted the history and ignored the implications of their decision because they were concerned not about the Constitution or about judicial precedent or about the implications of stripping women of this fundamental right, they were focused only on the outcome that they sought. As the three dissenting judges wrote, “The Court reverses course today for one reason and one reason only: because the composition of this Court has changed. ... The majority has overruled Roe and Casey for one and only one reason: because it has always despised them, and now it has the votes to discard them. The majority thereby substitutes a rule by judges for the rule of law.”

Harris County Clerk's Office Issues One Millionth Marriage License

n Cassidy Hutchinson, the House select committee on January 6 has found its most compelling witness to date. Hutchinson, an aide to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, gave the committee and the American public a historically unrivaled look at a president unhinged, enraged and apparently willing to cross any line to remain in power. She provided a riveting firsthand look at wrongdoing by an astonishing range of powerful people, up to and including former President Donald Trump. Hutchinson’s testimony landed like a bomb. She addressed several of the most pressing questions before the committee, including who knew what and who did what during the crucial moments before and during the January 6 Capitol attack. Hutchinson made clear that Trump did plan to go to the Capitol as the riot was unfolding on January

assidy Hutchinson testified during the hearing that she was told that former President Donald Trump became “irate” when informed by security that he would not be going to the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, because the situation was not secure. And she testified that she heard a secondhand account of how Trump was so enraged at his Secret Service detail for blocking him from going to the Capitol that he lunged to the front of his presidential SUV and tried to turn the wheel. Tony Ornato, then-White House

deputy chief of staff, told Hutchinson that Robert Engel, who was the Secret Service agent in charge on Jan. 6, 2021, repeatedly told Trump on their way back to the White House after Trump’s Ellipse speech that it wasn’t safe to go to the Capitol. According to Hutchinson, Ornato recounted Trump screaming, “I’m the F’ing President. Take me up to the Capitol now.” Trump then “reached up toward the front of the vehicle to grab at the steering wheel,” Hutchinson remembered learning. She added that,

that White House officials would get charged with various federal crimes including obstruction of justice, obstruction of the electoral count in Congress and inciting a riot. The President’s key legal adviser recognized that his conduct likely could be charged as criminal.

according to Ornato, Trump used his other hand to “lunge” at Engel. Here’s how Hutchinson described the President’s anger at being prevented from going to the Capitol: “Tony proceeded to tell me that when the President got in the beast, he was under the impression from Mr. Meadows that the off-the-record movement to the Capitol was still possible and likely to happen, but that Bobby had more information. So as the President had gotten into the vehicle with Bobby, he thought they were going up to the Capitol and when Bobby relayed to him, we’re not, we don’t have the assets to do it, it’s not secure, we’re going back to the West Wing, the President had a very strong, very angry response to that. Tony described him as being ‘irate.’ The President said something to the effect of ‘I’m the F-ing President, take me to the Capitol now.’” Engel and Ornato have both testified to the committee behind closed doors, but their statements have not been used in today’s hearing. Asked by CNN for comment about today’s testimony regarding Trump allegedly lunging at his security detail and other claims about security on Jan. 6, a Secret Service spokesperson said the US Secret Service has “been cooperating with the Select Committee since its inception in spring 2021, and will continue to do so, including by responding on the record to the committee regarding the new allegations surfaced in today’s testimony.”

une is a popular month for weddings and the Harris County Clerk’s Office (HCCO) is happy to announce that its Personal Records office in downtown Houston recently issued its one millionth marriage license. According to Harris County Archives, HCCO recorded its first marriage license in 1837. “On average, our office issues about 2,500 marriage licenses each month,” said Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth. “Some couples even opt to get married on the same day, which involves finding a Judge that will waive the 72-hour waiting period.” The one millionth marriage license was issued to Mr. and Mrs. Marcelo Pestana on June 22. The happy couple was married that same day by Judge Michael Newman, Harris County Probate Court #2. In 2019, HCCO issued nearly 32,000 marriage licenses; however, that number dropped by half in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Last year, the number of marriage licenses issued rose to more than 28,000 after vaccine rollouts and restrictions were lifted. So far this year, the office has issued more than 15,100 marriage licenses. “We are thrilled to see the numbers rise now that the COVID-19 threat is lower,” added Clerk Hudspeth. “Our office is open for business, and we look forward to serving our residents.”

n partnership as founding donors, the Butt family and H-E-B, which are longtime supporters of public education, will work with other stakeholders and organizations on the development of this project. Texas firms Huckabee and Joeris General Contractors, which are also founding donors, have also made generous commitments to donate their services and time to this project, which will help the children, families, staff and Uvalde CISD community move forward together. “Our first store in Uvalde opened in 1959, and Uvalde people are our people,” said Charles Butt, H-E-B’s Chairman. “As we continue to mourn tremendous loss, I join with my family and H-E-B in working to ensure the Uvalde community can move forward from this tragic event. and implement state-of-the-art safety and security measures, and infrastructure to support the availability of new technology. The location and design of the new campus and timeline for the project have not been determined. Built in the 1960s, Robb Elementary serves approximately 538 students in grades second through

fourth. The school has been permanently closed, and while a timeline hasn’t been determined, plans are in place for the school to be demolished, ensuring students and staff will not have to return to the building at the site of the tragedy. In addition to this support, last month, H-E-B launched a donation campaign and announced it would commit $500,000 to support the victims and families affected by this heartbreaking event. Earlier this month, the H-E-B Tournament of Champions Charitable Trust also announced a $500,000 donation to support nonprofits helping fellow Texans in Uvalde. “We thank our loyal H-E-B customers for their unwavering support of communities in times of need,” Butt added. onceptual artist Leandro Erlich creates visual paradoxes and optical illusions that force you to question your perception of reality. He renders everyday situations confounding—a staircase that misleads

to go nowhere; an elevator that appears partially stuck below ground; a swimming pool that appears to reflect one group of onlookers above the water’s surface and a different group below. Seeing Is Not Believing features two of Erlich’s most iconic installations: Bâtiment (Façade) and Le cabinet du psy (The Psychoanalyst’s Office). These immersive, room-size environments and a selection of additional works span the career of the acclaimed Argentinean artist, whose psychological subversion of the everyday seems to defy the basic laws of physics while challenging your sense of balance, space, and the absolute. Born in 1973, Erlich lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Montevideo, Uruguay. He was an artist-in-residence in the Glassell School of Art’s Core Program at the MFAH from 1997 to 1999. Seeing Is Not Believing serves as both a homecoming for him and a revelation for MFAH visitors.

tlanta-based artist and educator Tokie Rome-Taylor examines themes of time, spirituality, visibility, and identity through photography and cyanotype in “What Remains,” the exhibition opening Saturday, July 2, at 2 p.m. at the Community Artists’ Collective, 4101 San Jacinto, Suite 116. The exhibition continues through August 27 and is part of Print Matters Houston, a biennial city-wide celebration of original prints, the artists who create them, and the people who collect them. “My practice is grounded in the understanding that one’s self-perception and sense of belonging in a society begins in childhood,” Rome-Taylor explained.

“Children are the subjects I use to explore how we gain a sense of belonging within our society,” she continued. “These works explore what we pass down. From our family, culture, and life experiences, we pass down artifacts in the physical and spiritual. Here, digital photographs are converted into large-scale negatives, which are then exposed on fabric and cotton rag paper that has been coated with cyanotype chemicals. ‘What Remains’ after the prints are washed is a visual image of family artifacts and an exploration of history and spirit. It is what remains of our archives, ancestors, and artifacts. Rome-Taylor is a Funds for Teachers Fellowship recipient and studied photography in Santa Fe, N.M. In San Francisco, Calif., Her work has been a part of many national and international exhibitions, is held in multiple public and private collections, and was recently acquired by the Petrucci Family Foundation Collection of African American Art. Her work is a part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, The Fralin Museum at the University of Virginia, and the Southeastern Museum of Photography.
