COMMENTARY

SEN. MANCHIN HAS A CHANCE TO MAKE HISTORY AND BENEFIT HIS STATE By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin listens during a hearing before Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Subcommittee of Senate Appropriations Committee at Dirksen Senate Office Building on June 10. Photo by Alex Wong/Getty Images

W

est Virginia Senator Joe Manchin stands at the bridge. He has immense influence - virtually a veto - on whether and how this country makes progress in the Biden administration. Not surprisingly, he’s under immense pressure. The right-wing Koch network has launched a barrage of ads calling on Manchin to stand against Biden’s American Jobs Plan and the For the People Voting Rights Bill. Progressive groups are organizing on the ground and in the air to push Manchin to vote for reform. Across the country, citizen movements are building to call on Congress to act on challenges - from climate change, to entrenched racial inequity, to extreme inequality - that can no longer be ignored. Manchin’s recent statement that he would demand bipartisan support for any election reforms, even as Republicans push partisan election deforms at the state level triggered howls of outrage. His embrace of the filibuster - effectively giving Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell the power to obstruct Biden’s agenda

4

- effectively condemns the country to political paralysis. One can understand Manchin’s fervid embrace of bipartisanship in an age of hyper-partisan divides. Trump won 69 percent of the vote in West Virginia in 2020, the highest of any state. Manchin is the only Democrat elected statewide in West Virginia as it has turned more and more Republican over the last decade. Even as the Democratic Party has become increasingly the party of the suburbs and the cities, of people of color and the professional middle class, 69 percent of West Virginia voters are whites without a college degree. These voters - who have every reason to feel abandoned by the New Democrats - are the heart of Trump’s base. Yet Manchin is no coward. In contrast with Republican senators who cower for Trump’s approval, Manchin voted to impeach Trump and to set up a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 sacking of the Capitol. In these cases, he voted for the national interest -- and for common sense -- over any personal political interest.

June 17 - June 23, 2021

Now he faces the same choice. Manchin represents one of the poorest states in the union. With the collapse of the coal industry and the closing of manufacturing plants, West Virginia is an epicenter of deaths of despair. It leads the nation in drug overdose deaths. By 2016, it suffered one death by overdose every 10 hours. Poverty haunts West Virginians. The state suffers the highest rate of adult diabetes, the highest levels of obesity, the worst rate of smoking and lung disease. Extreme poverty means inadequate access to healthy food, decent housing, and health care, with growing levels of financial stress, and threats to personal safety. Because of its poverty, West Virginia is already one of the states most dependent on federal assistance. If its people have any hope, it is that federal investment will do for West Virginia what it has done for regions across the country - provide the resources for modernizing infrastructure, seeding new industries, cleaning up toxic dumps and environmental hazards, funding education from pre-K through college

www.StyleMagazine.com

and more. In contrast with previous presidents, Joe Biden offers the vision and the promise for that rebuilding. His American Jobs Plan and American Families Plan provides the resources needed for America to begin to meet the challenges it faces. Given his importance, Manchin could ensure that West Virginia stands at the front of the line for the resources involved. He could make an historic contribution to the revival of his state - and to the revival of this country. Conservatives like the Kochs cannot match that possibility. At best, they offer Manchin only a marginally better chance at re-election in a state that will continue to decline. In 1964 and ‘65, as the civil rights movement galvanized the country’s “better angels,” Lyndon Johnson cemented the support of the Republican Senate leader Everett Dirksen by combining an appeal to history with an appeal to Dirksen’s specific interests. That is the task before Joe Biden now. Republicans under McConnell have shown that their sole priority is to obstruct Biden in the hope of strengthening their hold on power. No more time need be wasted on negotiations that are designed only to fail. Biden now needs to do a Lyndon Johnson on Manchin: to offer him the chance to both make history and to benefit his own state, to serve his principles and his interests. The time has come to move. NATIONAL NEWS: BIDEN TO NOMINATE MICHAEL D.

SMITH AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF AMERICORPS By Kate Sullivan – wwwCNN.com – Newswire

P

resident Joe Biden will nominate Michael D. Smith to serve as the chief executive officer of AmeriCorps, the nation’s main public service program, the White House confirmed Tuesday. Smith currently serves as the executive director of the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance -- an initiative launched by former President Barack Obama in 2014 to address opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color. Smith is also the director of youth opportunity programs at the Obama Foundation. CNN was first to report Smith would be Biden’s nominee to lead AmeriCorps. Smith will need Senate confirmation to lead the federal agency. AmeriCorps receives both federal and private funds and has about 270,000 members and volunteers serving across the country. Smith said in a statement: “I’ve seen firsthand how service, and this extraordinary federal agency, can uplift and transform -- in my life and countless others. If confirmed, I could not be more proud to have the honor to support the hundreds of thousands of AmeriCorps members and alumni whose hearts full of grace and souls generated by love enrich and inspire kids and communities/children and families in greatest need every day.” “For the past eight years, I’ve had the privilege to work alongside President Obama and our My Brother’s Keeper family to reduce barriers and expand opportunity for boys and young men of color and their families. No matter where I go, the proudest title I will ever hold is my brother’s keeper. I have never been more optimistic about how this mantra that became a movement will continue to grow,” Smith said. During the Obama administration, Smith was appointed special assistant to the President and senior director of Cabinet affairs for the My Brother’s Keeper initiative. He managed the initiative and the interagency task force at

Prior to joining the Obama White House, Smith was the director of the Social Innovation Fund, which is another Corporation for National and Community Service program. He was also senior vice president of social innovation at the Case Foundation, where he focused on bridging the digital divide in America and increasing access to computers and the internet. Smith is a Senior Atlantic Fellow for Racial Equity and is a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Alumni Hall of Fame. He also serves on the board of directors of Results for America and Venture Philanthropy Partners. Former President Donald Trump targeted AmeriCorps for elimination when he was in office and put forward a budget proposal that would have cut the Corporation for National and Community Service, which houses AmeriCorps and other national service initiatives.

Smith’s nomination was praised by AnnMaura Connolly, the president of Voices for National Service, a coalition of national and local service programs and state service commissions. “With decades of executive experience working to improve communities and to create opportunities for young people, Michael Smith is the perfect person to work with the 70,000 nonprofit organizations across the country that leverage national service as a results-driven strategy to meet community challenges -- and a way to invest in Americans of diverse backgrounds,” Connolly said in a statement.

PRESIDENT BIDEN’S HISTORIC VICTORY FOR AMERICA Senate passes Biden’s $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief bill -- No Thanks to GOP Opinion by Julian Zelizer, www.CNN.com – Newswire

T

he Senate on Saturday passed its version of the Democrats’ massive coronavirus relief package, after the House passed its package last week. Lawmakers made several changes throughout the legislation, but three were particularly notable -- narrowing eligibility for the stimulus checks, trimming the federal boost to unemployment benefits and nixing an increase in the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. Much of the Senate legislation, however, largely mirrors the $1.9 trillion package approved by the House and laid out by President Joe Biden in January. Senate Democratic leaders faced more hurdles to advancing the legislation since the party can’t afford to lose a single member thanks to the 50-50 split in the chamber. Plus, they must adhere to the strict rules

6

of reconciliation, which they are using to approve the bill without any Republican support. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had vowed Thursday to stay in session to finish the bill this week, though Republicans were trying to drag out the process. The bill now goes back to the House for a vote and then onto the White House for Biden’s signature. Time is of the essence. An estimated 11.4 million workers will lose their unemployment benefits between mid-March and mid-April unless Congress passes its next coronavirus relief package quickly, a recent study by The Century Foundation found.

POLITICAL NEWS: HOUSE UNANIMOUSLY VOTED BILL TO MAKE JUNETEENTH A FEDERAL HOLIDAY! By Annie Grayer and Daniella Diaz www.CNN.com – Newswire

T

he House passed legislation Wednesday that would establish June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day, a US federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, sending the bill to President Joe Biden’s desk for his signature. The bill passed the House 415-14 after the Senate unanimously passed the legislation Tuesday. The 14 Republicans to vote against the bill were Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Mo Brooks of Alabama, Scott DesJarlais of Tennessee, Andy Biggs of Arizona, Tom Tiffany of Wisconsin, Doug LaMalfa of California, Tom McClintock of California, Mike Rogers of Alabama, Matt Rosendale of Montana, Ronny Jackson of Texas, Ralph Norman of South Carolina, Andrew Clyde of Georgia, Chip Roy of Texas and Paul Gosar of Arizona. The legislation was previously blocked by conservative Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin in 2020, but he dropped his objection this week despite his concerns, allowing the bill to advance out of the chamber. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced that the House would vote Wednesday in a tweet where he thanked the bill’s bipartisan sponsors, which included Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas and Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts. “I look forward to bringing this bill to the Floor, and urge bipartisan support,” Hoyer wrote. Jackson Lee told reporters ahead of the final passage, “what I see here today is racial divide crum-

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee — who held the gavel and formally declared its passage. J. Scott Applewhite/AP Photo bling, being crushed this day under a momentous vote that brings together people who understand the value of freedom.” Ahead of the vote, Markey acknowledged that Biden is still overseas on his first international trip, but told reporters “we will be communicating with the White House” about getting this legislation signed as soon as possible. The legislation has gained momentum after the Black Lives Matter protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd last year and the Democrats’ takeover of the White House and Congress.

On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger announced in Galveston, Texas, the end of slavery in accordance with President Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. In 1980, Juneteenth became a Texas state holiday. In the decades since, every state but South Dakota came to officially commemorate Juneteenth, but only a handful of states observe it as a paid holiday.

LOCAL NEWS: MACKENZIE LOCAL NEWS: JUNETEENTH SCOTT JUST GAVE AWAY $2.7B WITH EPC AND LUCILLE’S 1913 Houston-area groups are among the recipients; In 2020, Scott made two similar surprise announcements in which she donated a combined $6 billion to COVID-19 relief, gender equity and schools.

M

acKenzie Scott, the billionaire philanthropist known for her impromptu multi-billion dollar donations to charities and racial equity causes, announced Tuesday that she has given $2.7 billion to 286 organizations. This is the third round of major philanthropic gifts Scott has made, which together rival the charitable contributions made by the largest foundations. Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, wrote in a Medium post that she and her husband, Dan Jewett, made the donations to enable the recipients to continue their work and as a “signal of trust and encouragement” to them and others. And she made clear in her announcement that she is troubled by the increasing concentration of vast wealth among a small proportion of individuals. She and Jewett worked with a team of researchers and philanthropy advisors “to give away a fortune that was enabled by systems in need of change.” “In this effort,” she said, “we are governed by a humbling belief that it would be better if disproportionate wealth were not concentrated in a small number of hands and that the solutions are best designed and implemented by others.” Houston-area groups among latest recipients Project Row Houses in Third Ward, Lee College in Baytown, San Jacinto Community College and Brazosport College are among the local groups getting money this time around.

this

Not the first time she has done

In 2020, Scott made two similar surprise announcements in which she donated a combined $6 billion to COVID-19 relief, gender equity, historically Black colleges and universities and other schools. In Southeast Texas, they included YMCA of Greater Houston and Prairie View A&M University. Similar to the organizations she picked as recipients last year, Scott said the 286 organizations chosen for Tuesday’s announcement were selected from a rigorous process of research and analysis. That effort included “equity-oriented” nonprofits working in long-neglected areas. “Because we believe that teams with experience on the front lines of challenges will know best how to put the money to good use, we encouraged them to spend it however they choose,” she wrote. The latest recipients range from universities to refugee resettlement groups to arts and culture organizations that have suffered from a drop in giving as donors focused on more urgent needs brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

Who: Emancipation Park Conservancy (EPC) and Lucille’s 1913 are collaborating to feed Houstonians in need, as EPC celebrates 149 years of hosting Houston’s annual Juneteenth celebration. The organizations will supply meals for 2,000 Houstonians and the event is made possible by Lucille’s 1913, H-E-B, Coca-Cola, Reliant, Council Member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz and the Houston Food Bank. It’s open to the public, but registration is required: epconservancy.salsalabs.org/wearejuneteenthiscommunity. This is the second collaboration between the two organizations, following a holiday meal distribution event in December of 2020 in which 1,135 families were served and 5,000 meals were provided. What: A Juneteenth-Style meal distribution, offering signature foods to celebrate and pay homage will take place at Emancipation Park on the Juneteenth holiday. Since its inception, families of African descent have gathered on June 19th, over Bar-b-que, watermelon, and red soda to honor their ancestors and bond over southern traditions. When: June 19, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Where: Emancipation Park 3018 Emancipation Ave, Houston, TX 77004 (on the side of the park facing Tuam Street) Why: A blending of the words June and nineteenth, Juneteenth is the oldest known US celebration of the end of slavery and commemorates June 19, 1865, the day that slaves were emancipated in Texas. The tradition of red drinks and fruit links the present to the past as kola nut tea and bissap (hibiscus tea) both originated in West Africa. They were both imported to the United States during the slave trade and symbolize the resiliency of people of African descent. Photo credit: Jenn Duncan

Boyce Family Values By Jo-Carolyn Goode www.StyleMagazine.com

N

othing brings more excitement to people than the news of a couple having a baby. Between all the congratulations, gifts, and advice the couple stands in the middle of it all in complete fear with questions swirling in their head. Are they ready for a baby? Do they have everything they need? Will they do a good job? Their shoulders are heavy because molding and shaping the life of another human being is a huge responsibility. “I went into it (fatherhood) knowing it was serious and scary. I wanted to be that perfect father but I learned there is no perfect parent. It’s a journey,” said entertainer, music producer singer, songwriter, director, producer, father, and manager for his children Thomas “TJ” Boyce. It was by relying on his faith in God and truly believing in his prayers that he went from being scared to concern. “You want the best for them,” said TJ as he went on to speak about mistakes that will be made in parenting and in the lives of the children. “As a parent, I hope that those mistakes are things that won’t be detrimental.” Tj has a 15-year-old son named Thomas “TJ” Boyce, III aka TJ Jr., and an 8-year-old daughter named London. These two are a blessing to him. What he finds the most rewarding about being a dad to his crew is being their #1 teacher. “I love that. I love being able to take someone so innocent and totally open to learning and being able to tell them this is what this is. I love being able to give them a bit of my perspective, shape their mind, and seeing a little bit of myself in them,” said TJ. In his case, seeing himself in his children is

10

June 17 - June 23, 2021

a reality as they are following his lead to work in the entertainment field. When TJ saw the “it” factor in his children and they wanted to get in the industry he put his own career on pause so they could get their careers started. It is never too early to start working in his opinion. The decision to hit pause on his career has paid off big time. His youngest daughter, London, wrote a book entitled “Wonder London: I Hate My Curly Hair” that is now being turned into a movie with casting including Vivica A. Fox, Tichina Arnold, Nephew Tommy, and her big sis Asha and brother TJ Jr. The movie is based off London’s experience of getting teased and bullied at her predominately White school about her naturally curly hair. In addition, she starred in the film “Antebellum” in which she plays the daughter of actress and entertainer Janelle Monae. Now for the big kicker, little Miss London has made history as being the first-ever African American model to be featured on a product for Blue Bell Ice Cream. Equally as successful is London’s brother TJ III, he is an actor, rapper, singer, entrepreneur, and, comedian. Comedy is a hard industry but it seems to be no sweat for TJ Jr. as he has already been labeled as one of the funniest teens in the country with the stamp of Wayne Brady himself. Brady became one of TJ Jr.’s mentors after he was chosen to compete in the BYUTV series, “Wayne Brady’s Comedy IQ. The young teen also claims Michael Colyar and Marcus Wiley as additional mentors. Young audiences can look for TJ Jr. on his upcoming film with Disney called “Crater” where TJ Jr. is the lead actor. Kid Cudi is also signed up for the film. Like his lil sis, he has written a book as well and has released a single.

www.StyleMagazine.com

TJ Jr. stands by his personal motto, “You are not going to outwork me!” TJ has a third who is also talented. TJ’s oldest daughter Asha who has singing chops as well. She is currently working in the studio recording new music. However, all details can’t be released as of yet. Just know fabulosity from her is on the way. All of this talent right here in Houston. Not bad for a dad who didn’t push his children in entertainment but push them towards their dreams voicing them to him. Need me knot forget that Tj’s youngest and middle child have a super cool. The Boyce Kids Cream Machine dishes out sweet treats to beat the Texas’ heat. Pouring his soul into his kids was TJ’s mission. Safe to say mission accomplished. It is evident that the message of always grinding is ringing in the ears of Asha, TJ Jr., and London. The Houston born and Midland raised man has 12 years in the entertainment industry working with such stars as Sean “P. Diddy/ Puffy” Combs, Dr. Dre, Scarface and, Trae tha Truth. In fact, he teamed up with Trae tha Truth to produce a new film “Mr. Officer” with another Houston legend Scarface and Tyrin Turner. The movie is about how officers see Black people in the eyes of the law. It is set to be released on July 1st. Raising children is straining, especially when thinking about the dangers at every turn. It can be partially hard for African Americas as it seems there are always a set of unwritten rules that must be followed. TJ had to teach his children those rules, specifically the one surrounding what to do if an officer of the law pulls them over. He told his son his focus should be on one thing and one thing only. That is following exactly all instructions given by the officer with a calm attitude.

(L to R) Thomas “TJ” Boyce III, London James Boyce, and Thomas “TJ” Boyce Jr. “Regardless if you have done something or if you haven’t done anything it is not the time to be a tough guy or plead your case. Your job is to make sure you come home.” Creating moments to have purposeful dialogue with his children to talk about tough subjects as those above is something TJ credits for him being a good dad. He intentionally sets up time to go speak with his children to find how their day has gone and what is going on in their lives. It is in those conversations that he can teach his children about how to feel comfortable in their own skin and build confidence in them. Inasmuch as he is teaching them, he is learning from them about how different issues and things affect them personally and how they see their own life. Being a hands-on type of dad is something TJ believes is so vital in raising children, especially Black children. Since a few bad examples of Black men tainted the race to cause a negative light for all Black men to walk through, TJ feels it is his mission to prove that there are some good Black men in the world handling their business, providing and being there for the children, and doing what’s needed to be done. The principles TJ is teaching his kids are ones he lives by himself. His strong work ethic has garnered him great success. Beyond the movie “Mr. Officer,” Tj recently made a song and video called “Ghetto America” which is a spin on the George Floyd incident. That video stars Cuba Gooding’s brother, Omar Gooding, and has been viewed millions of times. Another project in the mix is a new song that is an ode to Black women called “Black Woman.” “I just wanted to come out flat-footed and say I love you Black woman. I felt like it was timely. The Black woman has been the most underappreciated, mistreated, disrespected person in

American history. I wanted to give the Black women her flowers so I created the record Black woman,” commented TJ. Often more is caught than taught and how you make one feel is remembered and treasured. With the way things are going for Tj Jr. and London, it is clear that TJ indeed put his fingerprint on them and they were watching and listening. They could not have a better example to follow than their dad. As he is a living daily blueprint of a God-fearing, hard-working, prayer-believing, lover of all things about his children kind of father. This Father’s Day TJ doesn’t know what to expect in the form of a tangible gift. He shared about one gift that started out as a gag and turned into a pride builder for his son in the end. Calling it his worst and best gift, TJ Jr. gave his dad a handmade decorated shirt with balloons and everything on it. TJ Jr. was around seven and he thought he knew his dad well. So your TJ asked his father to wear the shirt thinking he would say no. But to TJ Jr.’s surprise his father wore the shirt. The gesture made TJ beam with pride knowing his dad wore a TJ Jr, original. “I will do anything for my kids,” a smiling TJ said. Cheers to the fathers that do anything for their children. Here is to support for the fathers who know their role is more than being a provider for their children. It is being their counselor, teacher, fixer, saver, encourager, supporter, and whatever else that goes in the blank of “Dad, I need ________________.” Congratulations to the fathers who love and go beyond to do whatever is needed or it takes to earn the title World’s Greatest Dad. You are essential in your child(ren)’s life. Happy Father’s Day TJ and all fathers everywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

e are so excited to bring you our annual Juneteenth blues and creole festival featuring Grammy award-winning blues legend Bobby Rush! This story telling bluesman boasts gritty, sensuous vocals and impressive harmonica chops that wow audiences wherever he goes! After decades of tearing up the chitlin’ circuit on a nightly basis with his sweaty, no-holds-barred funkfests, Bobby has thoroughly broken through to the mainstream. He won a long-overdue 2017 Grammy for his spectacular album Porcupine Meat and consistently tours the globe as a headliner. This revered legend, well past 80 years of age, is bigger and badder and bolder than ever.

I’m a bluesman who’s sitting on the top of my game, proud of what I do and proud of who I am and thankful for people accepting me for what I am and who I am,” says the charismatic Rush. “I’m happy about what I’m doing and still enthused about what I’m doing. This show promises something for everyone. Rush wails on pungent harmonica throughout the set, his vocals as sly and sensuous as ever while elastic grooves simmer and surge behind him. Rush has been a master storyteller for decades. His work is influenced by a slew of blues greats, including Louis Jordan, Little Walter, Sonny Boy

Williamson, Howlin’ Wolf, Bobby Bland, BB. King, and Junior Parker to name a few. “I guess you can find about 20 guys that I like, and when you hear my music, you can hear a little of this, a little of that, a little up, a little down. You put ’em all in a bowl and stir ’em up, you get a Bobby Rush. That’s called a Bobby Rush blues soup,” Rush said. This performance is produced with support from Hancock Whitney and funded in part with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. All Performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre are Free!!

How ‘Star Trek’ Legend Nichelle Nichols Helped Shape A Diverse Future For NASA

S

tart a conversation about the power of Afrofuturism, and it won’t be long before “Star Trek” legend Nichelle Nichols’s name is dropped. As the iconic Lt. Uhura, the actress made television history with her portrayal of a 23rd-century communications officer aboard the “Star Trek” USS Enterprise. It was one of the first times a Black woman was cast in a position of power on TV -- and it was in a science fiction series, no less. The result was radical, says Atlanta-area comic book creator and game designer Dedren Snead. “Seeing her as a Black woman on the show ... that was ... who was that?” Snead tells W. Kamau Bell on Sunday’s “United Shades of America.” “It was just, I never saw Black people in fantasy in that sense.” A mission from Dr. King Lt. Uhura may have been a fictional character, but her on-screen authority in a futuristic world held immense influence at a time when Black Americans were fighting for civil rights. Nichols, who grew up near Chicago and began performing as a teen, had her heart set on Broadway. As the first season drew to a close in 1967, Nichols was ready to move on. As the story goes, Nichols was at an event when she was told a “Star Trek” fan wanted to meet her. “She’s thinking it’s going to be this pimply-faced kid,” comic book designer Afua Richardson recounts to Bell. “But it turned out to be Martin Luther King Jr. He said, ‘Your show is the only show that I will allow my kids to watch.’ She eventually told him that she was planning on leaving the show, and he gave a command, and he said, ‘No, you cannot leave the show, it is too important.’” King shared with Nichols how her work was impacting generations of Black Americans who were watching her play a non-stereotypical role. Nichols took

King’s words to heart, staying with “Star Trek” through its end in 1969. “That was greater than anything else, to be told that by Dr. Martin Luther King, because he was my leader. So I stayed and I never regretted it.” Recruiting for NASA By choosing to stay, Nichols didn’t just remain in an influential part. She set in motion a chain of events that would alter the course of history. The same year “Star Trek” came to a close in 1969, the United States successfully landed two men on the moon. All eyes were on the future of space flight, but the growing field also had a glaring deficiency. “There were no women, and there were no minorities in the space program -- and that’s supposed to

represent the whole country?” Enlisted by NASA in the late 1970s, Nichols set out on a new mission to help recruit women and people of color into the space race. “I am going to bring you so many qualified women and minority astronaut applicants for this position,” Nichols has recalled saying, “that if you don’t choose one ... everybody in the newspapers across the country will know about it.” Her work helped bring aboard Guion Bluford, the first African American to go into space, and Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space. Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space, also points to Nichols as the source of her inspiration.

elcome back to The Open House. Last week, we discussed budgeting and preparing your finances to purchase a home. This week, we are continuing the discussion with the focus on down payments, homeowners insurance, and closing costs. After you find your perfect home, put in an offer, get it inspected and appraised there are only a few more steps before you can get your keys. The next step is to begin preparing for your closing. First, you want to make sure that you have your down payment ready and accessible for closing. The down payment is the money you will contribute upfront towards the purchase of your home. Most people think you have to put 20% down , but that is not true. There are many different types of loans that will allow you to put as little as 0-3% down. Your lender will provide the rest of the money for the loan at closing. Once you’ve got your down payment funds together, you will need to purchase homeowners insurance. Homeowners insurance provides you with financial protection over your home’s structure and belongings in the event of any damages or destructive events. This is required before the mortgage company will finalize your loan. According to insurance carrier data,

The Open House: With Realtor Falyn Davis

First Time Home Buying: Money Tips, Part 2

Falyn M. Davis

the average cost of home insurance is $1,312 annually for the dwelling and liability coverage of $250,000. Once you have the homeowners insurance, the fun really begins! All your hard work is about to pay off as you enter the final step of your transaction, the closing. During the closing, you will sign a lot of paperwork (so have a little patience) and pay a cashiers check for all of your closing

costs. Average closing costs for the buyer is between 2%-5% of the loan amount. After all the paperwork is signed and payments gone through, you can finally officially get your keys - Congratulations On Your New Home! If you’ve been waiting to hear those words, reach out to me! I’d love to assist you and help make your dreams come true.
