COMMENTARY

NO, President Trump, The Never-Ending War in Afghanistan Is NOT Over By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

D

on’t fall for the hype. That is the one lesson that we all should have learned about Donald Trump. He’s a salesman, not a statesman. He offers up fantasies, not facts. The most recent agreement with the Taliban in Afghanistan is a clear example of this. In the 2016 campaign, Trump had the good sense to promise to end America’s forever wars and bring the troops home. Afghanistan, our longest war now in its 19th year, is a classic example. We invaded Afghanistan to get Osama bin Laden and punish his forces for their attack on America on 9/11. We threw the Taliban out of power. Under Obama’s watch, bin Laden was found and killed. Yet we didn’t get out. We have squandered trillions of

dollars and lost thousands of American lives in an unending war in an impoverished nation on the other side of the world. We don’t care enough to send the troops and invest the trillions needed to occupy the country. Yet no president has had the courage to get the troops out and end the folly. Trump promised that he would do it. Now, he’s cut a deal with the Taliban that he will use to claim that he’s fulfilled his promise. Don’t fall for the hype. The deal Trump made with the Taliban will bring U.S. forces down -- but only to the approximate level that existed at the end of the Obama administration. He’s essentially agreed only to reverse the buildup that he had ordered over the last three years.

Further reductions are said to be dependent on the Taliban making a deal with the existing government. But the Afghani government already objects to the agreement that Trump made. It doesn’t want to face the Taliban without U.S. soldiers. After nearly two decades, it has been unable to create a legitimate government and a coherent military that can consolidate its position. If we wait for the Afghan government to agree for U.S. soldiers to leave, the forever war will continue, well, forever. Trump wants credit for ending the war -- and fulfilling his campaign promise -- without ending it. He wants to get out, but he doesn’t want to be blamed for losing. What’s needed is a clear commitment to get out -- not dependent on what the Afghani government or the Taliban do. Trump has failed to produce that, violating the campaign pledge he made to the American people. The sad reality is that we have no reason to be in Afghanistan. The country is impoverished, not strategic. The Taliban are oppressive and violent. The Afghanis should be uniting to defeat the Taliban and keep them from coming to power. But this is the responsibility of the Afghanis, not of the United States. The architects of the forever war warn that we will lose credibility if we get out and the government collapses. But what could be a greater loss of credibility than fighting futilely for nearly two decades without victory and

without end? They warn that without U.S. forces, Afghanistan could become a launching ground for terrorists. But, as we’ve seen, terrorists have many places to train in failed states -- including those we’ve helped create like Libya. We would be far better off -- and far more secure from terrorists -- if we stopped destabilizing the Middle East, ended the forever wars, stopped sponsoring regime changes, and addressed the threat of terrorism as a matter for intelligence, international cooperation, and aggressive policing. At the very least, we should stop wasting trillions of dollars and thousands of American lives on wars that we have no plan or commitment to win. Trump was right in 2016: Great powers do not fight endless wars. He is wrong to pretend that he’s bringing the troops home from Afghanistan when all he’s agreed to is to bring them back down to the level they were at when he took office. Americans are right to want an end to the endless wars. We need a president who has the courage and common sense to end them. Trump has proven once more that he is not that president. Texas Voter Says He Waited ‘A Little Bit Over Six Hours’ to Vote on Super Tuesday By CNN / StyleMagazine.com

Texas man said he waited for “a lit bit over six hours” at a polling center to participate in Super Tuesday, holding that although the long line deterred other voters, he felt it was his duty to cast a ballot in the Democratic nominating process. “I figured like it was my duty to vote. I wanted to get my vote in to voice my opinion. And I wasn’t going to let nothing stop me. So I waited it out,” Hervis Rogers told CNN’s Ed Lavandera early Wednesday morning after casting his ballot at a polling center located at Texas Southern University, a historically black college in Houston. Asked how long he had waited for to vote, Rogers said: “About six hours. A little bit over six hours.” Rogers was among scores of voters who experienced long lines at some polling centers in Texas, where the state has shut down hundreds of polling

MIKE BLOOMBERG DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

As someone who has been very lucky in life, I often say my story would have only been possible in America – and that’s true. But I also know that because of the barriers of discrimination, my story likely would have turned out very differently if I had been Black, and that more Black Americans of my generation would have ended up with far more wealth, had they been white. That’s why as President, I’m committed to act to build generational wealth for Black Families.

STATE Kappa Alpha Psi Member Fired for Embezzling More Than $1 Million

A

By TheGrio.com

ccording to Philadelphia Magazine, Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity member and former finance director, Curtis Anderson has been caught in a financial scandal after admitting that he embezzled over $1 million funds. Anderson, who served as a finance director at the fraternity’s international headquarters in Philadelphia for 20 years, was fired three days after admitting to his fraudulent activities. Investigations from agencies such as the Secret Service and FBI found that that Anderson had been embezzling money for over a year. Anderson cashed checks for almost $400,000 from the fraternity’s Santander bank account and at least $978,000 from the fraternity’s Wells Fargo account. Suspicions arose when Santander Bank contacted John Burrell, the fraternity’s

executive director about “suspicious activity.” Once Burrell received the notice, he and Thomas Battles, the fraternity’s national president visited the bank to address the issues. While there, Anderson walked through the bank’s door, unaware the two would be there.

Michael Bloomberg Ends His Billion Dollar Presidential Bid

The Honey Pot Founder On Racist Trolls after Target Ad: ‘Its All Good’

By ABCNews.com

By NBCNews.com

BCNews.com is reporting that Michael Bloomberg is ending his bid for President of United States after poor showing in primaries. Former New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg, a centrist billionaire who launched a White House bid after years of flirting with a run, and pledged to use his vast resources to unite Democrats and moderate Republicans against President Donald Trump has suspended his campaign and is endorsing former Vice President Joe Biden. His campaign was shaken by Biden’s resurgence and overwhelming victory in the South Carolina primary, which reignited the former vice president’s bid and led other moderate candidates to drop out of the race end endorse him in an effort to consolidate the primary vote and prevent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders from clinching the party’s nomination. On his massive operation, Bloomberg called it an “investment” in beating Trump.

black business owner whose company was flooded with racist reviews after being featured in a Target ad said she’s grateful for the controversy and the growth it offered her company. Beatrice Dixon, who started The Honey Pot Company in 2012,told Essence on Tuesday that she’s not upset after dozens of racist reviews were posted about her feminine hygiene products. The negative reviews were posted Monday in response to Dixon’s comments in a Target ad in which she said she hoped her success could pave the way for black girls. “It’s all good,” Dixon said. The businesswoman was featured in a Target commercial called “Founders We Believe In: The Honey Pot,” in which she spoke about how difficult it was for her to start her line of feminine hygiene products and how she wanted to pave the way so the next black girl with a good idea could have it easier.

Due to the restrictions on imports from China, hair care businesses may soon struggle to fulfill customer orders on popular items such as wigs, weaves, and hair extensions from factories primarily based in China. The coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, has already killed six people in the United

Shannle Wallace, who oversees District Cheveux in Bowie, Maryland, told WUSA 9 that she made an order for hair extensions from her China-based supplier in January. Her order still hasn’t arrived. The vendor is blaming the delay on the virus. “I just never imagined coronavirus would affect me, being in the states,” Wallace told the station. “Not directly as far as being sick, but my business.”

Spike Lee Says He’s Done Attending Knicks Games After Disagreement Over VIP Entrance

A

ll Spike Lee wants is to use the employee entrance at Madison Square Garden. Really, it’s all he knows. A long time New York Knicks superfan, filmmaker Lee has been using it for 28 years, he explained this morning on ESPN. But suddenly, at last night’s game, they wouldn’t let him -- security told him to use a different entrance. You’d think that would be

that, but it’s not. Lee is now full-on feuding with the Knicks and team owner James Dolan over his treatment. All of this comes after an incident at Monday night’s game, when video surfaced that seemed to show Lee being denied entry into the game. Fans questioned how the franchise could treat its biggest fan with such disrespect. It immediately drew comparisons to the Garden’s treatment of former NBA star Charles Oakley, who was ejected and banned in February 2017.

The Emergence of Butterfly Ali By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

B

utterflies are some of nature’s most beautiful creatures mainly for their various phases of life that allow them to transform through a process called metamorphosis. Humans are like butterflies too constantly changing to reinvent themselves. Titus Makin Jr. is a name that we are all coming to know from his acting repertoire. He has had roles on “Glee,” “Star-Crossed,” “Pretty Little Liars,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “The Path.” Now we can catch Makin onscreen in his new starring role on ABC’s “The Rookie.” He plays legacy rookie by the book officer Jackson West. The show has been picked up for a second season. Makin has said to expect a lot of drama, romance, and guest appearances as the squad gets a bit of a shake up. Although we tried to squeeze more information out of Makin all we could get was that his character Jackson may loosen up a slightly in this new season with the help of a new flame. Alright now Jackson! From his on-screen love to his personal #1 love; Makin is making time for his personal passion, music. Ladies and gentlemen meet Butterfly Ali. Who has not heard of the infamous quote from award winning boxer Muhammad Ali, “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. The hands can’t hit what the eyes can’t see.” It has been the inspiration for so many things including one of Butterfly Ali’s early songs. “I just literally felled in love with it,” he said as he told of why he favored it so much that he also chooses to use the quote as a muse for his alter ego. “It is an artistic expression. I took the strength of the butterfly that Muhammad Ali would quote about in his training where you can be a beautiful thing and assuming but very strong and powerful and I gave the props to Muhammad Ali for saying it,” said Butterfly Ali. Butterfly Ali’s music can be characterized in a similar manner that it is strong and powerful and assuming all at the same time. The singer/songwriter has a very soulful background with music influences like Marvin Gaye, Pharell, Andre 3000, and Celo Green. He blames that vibe on his parents who had this type of music on repeat when he was growing up. It’s the combination of his musical interests coupled with his world travel as a military kid that has shaped the artistry of musical genre. “I have always been kind of a respectful rebel. I have always been drawn to the edgier things in life. It is always cool for me to draw outside of the lines.” He continued speaking about how his travels and interests equaled the “creative bug” that he is.

10

March 05 – March 11, 2020

www.stylemagazine.com

Drawn to the soulful corkier styles of music, Butterfly Ali is introducing himself with two newly released singles, “Rose” and “Righteous.” “Rose” is a plea to a former relationship where he questioned if he had just let “the one” slipped through his fingers. Where “Righteous” takes a different approach that calls for one to look at their own flaws and faults before judging others on that same criteria. “Its like why are you acting so self-righteous. Don’t forget we are all just as screwed up.” Both songs are very personal for Butterfly Ali as they are based on real life circumstances. He hopes others can learn from his experiences. Although the “Rose” and “Righteous” are the only singles out now they not the only songs that Butterfly Ali has that are ready to be released. He, along with his writing partner, has enough songs to debut an album. But they don’t want to rush the process. The goal is to allow people to get to know Butterfly Ali personally and musically to grow the fan base. He has plans to tease out singles slowly to grow that relationship with listeners. . As you come to know Butterfly Ali, let me tell you more about Makin the person. Born Titus Odell Makin Jr. in Honolulu, Hawaii in June 1989, he bounced a crossed the U.S. with his family due to his father’s military service. This allowed him to experience different cultures and forms of entertainment. He started taking dancing and singing lessons when he was very young and his sister was the one interested in acting. The acting bug bit him after he saw the movie “Step Up” in high school when he realized he combined three talents into a career. From that point on he started taking acting lessons, when he secured the lead role in his high school’s production of “1940’s Radio Hour” he hooked. Bring out the big lights for Makin saw his name in the stars. After his high school graduation, he headed to the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts’ for professional training. He left New York to live out his dreams in Los Angeles where acting gigs quickly rolled his way. Follow Makin socially to learn more about the actor and singer/songwriter. Be watchful for new music this month from him. Whether you float like a butterfly or sting like a bee be sure to keep your hands on whatever you see from Butterfly Ali. Defense Wins Championships XFL Roughnecks Defense Shuts Down Renegades Offense To Stay Undefeated By Brian Barefield, Sports Editor

L

egendary Alabama coach Paul “Bear” Bryant once uttered the most prophetic and timeless cliché’s in sports history.

“Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships,” said Bryant. No statement is more accurate to describe the Houston Roughnecks (4-0) victory over the Dallas Renegades (2-2) in the “Texas Throwdown” by a score of 27-20 on Sunday to remain the only undefeated team in the XFL. Houston used three first quarter interceptions off of Renegades quarterback Landry Jones to set the tone for the game and would end the game with a total of five takeaways (3 interceptions-2 forced fumbles). “We talk about those takeaways all the time,” Roughnecks head coach June Jones said after the game. “Our defense just kept hanging in there. We needed to score more points when we had our chances with those takeaways.” Houston now has eight intercep-

tions in four games and leads the league in forced turnovers with 11. The Renegades were determined not to let the PJ Walker-to Cam Phillips combination defeat them as they devised a defensive scheme to render the consecutive XFL Star of The Week recipient (Phillips) null and void throughout the game. The XFL leader in receiving was held to a season low one catch for nine yards. One thing I have learned by watching the Roughnecks this season is they are a very resilient group of young men who adapt to adversity quickly and that’s just what Walker (239 yards passing and two touchdowns) did on Sunday. With Phillips being blanketed by the Renegade defenders all day, Walker found running back Nick Holley early and often throughout the game. Holley led all receivers with eight catches for 97-yards and a touchdown. “I thought Nick Holley played great today,” Walker said. “We need guys to step up when they try and take Cam away. We just have to go out there

and make plays.” Dallas kept the game close after their quarterback (Jones) put them in a horrible position in the first quarter. They scored 11 second quarter points to go into the half down by only four points (15-11) and would come within one point of Houston in the third quarter before disaster would strike Jones and the Renegades offense again. Early in the fourth quarter, Jones would be stripped by Roughnecks linebacker Edmond Robinson at the Renegades 12-yard line and Robinson scored off the miscue to put Houston up by a score of 27-20 after the failed twopoint conversion attempt by Houston. “I couldn’t believe it happen,” said a jovial Robinson in the locker room. “I didn’t even know the ball was still on the ground so when I saw it I just picked it up, ran to the end zone and then straight to the sidelines.” That would be all the points the Roughnecks needed as they would come up once again with a huge turnover late

in the fourth quarter as Dallas threatened to score inside of the Houston five-yard line. Linebacker DeMarquis Gates would recover a tipped pass off the hands of Renegade receiver Flynn Nagel to secure the Roughnecks fourth consecutive victory. “I was just trying to make a play,” Gates said. “Under two minutes, they were getting down close. It was a seven-point game at the time, so we were just trying to make a stop.” Houston welcomes Seattle to TDECU Stadium on Saturday as they go for win number five. Kickoff is at 1pm.

Smart Savings Strategy

Financial Tips for Teens

hen it comes to economics, many teens’ mouths write checks their knowledge can’t cash. While 93% of American teens say they know how the economy works, 29% have had no economic schooling, according to a survey of 1,000 U.S. teens ages 13-18 by Wakefield Research on behalf of Junior Achievement and the Charles Koch Foundation. Even in light of their false confidence, teens are aware of the importance of financial education. Although the study identified numerous gaps in economic and financial knowledge, it also showed teens do know where to look for credible information. Two-thirds (67%) recognize they should use their school as a resource. “One of the things we hear often is that some textbooks are written too academically for most students to understand the concepts,” said Jack E. Kosakowski, president and CEO of Junior Achievement USA. “Our programs, which work as a complement to the school curriculum, are written from the perspective of today’s teens and use digital content to help bring economic concepts to life for students.” Beyond the classroom, another 63% of students believe they should use their parents as resources for economics education. Help influence the financial literacy of a teen in your life with these practical money-management tips adapted from the curriculum. Set goals. Managing your money is more meaningful when you’re doing it with purpose. This might mean budgeting to ensure you have enough money to maintain your auto insurance and keep gas in your car, or you may be saving for a big senior trip. Knowing what you want to achieve with your money can help you plan how you spend

it more wisely. Weigh needs vs. wants. When you begin making your own money, it’s easier to indulge your own wishes and spend money on things you don’t necessarily need. To some extent, that’s not a bad thing; rewarding yourself is fine when you do so within reason. That means not exceeding your available funds, and not forsaking things you truly need, like gas money to get to and from a job or school. Get a debit card. Most people find that having cash on hand makes it easier to spend. If you use a debit card instead, you’re an extra step away from spending so you have a little more time to consider your purchase. Another benefit of a debit card is it helps track your purchases in real time so you can keep constant tabs on your balance and ensure you don’t overdraft your account. Start a savings habit. Even if your income doesn’t allow for much, it’s a good idea to get in the habit of setting aside a portion of each check. It may only be $10, but over time each $10 deposit can build your account toward a long-range goal. Protect your privacy. Teens who’ve grown up in the digital age tend to be less skeptical and cautious about privacy matters than their elder counterparts. It’s important that young people understand the potential impact of failing to protect their privacy when it comes to financial matters, including the possibility that their identities could be stolen and all of their money siphoned away. Teaching kids about security is an essential lesson in economics. Visit ja.org for more tips and information to help raise your teen’s financial literacy.
