WHO WILL STAND FOR PEACE?
By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
W
ho will stand for peace against the war in Ukraine? How can this terrible war be brought to an end? How can this irreparable breach be repaired? With each passing day, the world watches as the violence ratchets up, civilian deaths and injuries rise, military destruction lays waste to civilized life, refugees now numbering in the millions continue to flee. And more horrors will come. Russia's invasion failed to achieve a quick and relatively bloodless victory. The resistance of Ukrainians stirred the world. Led by the U.S. and its NATO allies, countries across the world imposed unprecedented economic sanctions on Russia. A surprising number of companies terminated business in Russia, and the number continues to grow. Russian President Vladimir Putin seems to be girding for an assault on Ukraine's major cities - Kiev, Odessa and more. After artillery barrages will come bloody block-by-block urban warfare. The toll in lives and destruction will grow. As the war goes on, the violence will escalate. NATO countries will continue to send more and more arms and aid to help the Ukrainians resist. Russia is reportedly recruiting soldiers in Syria and asking for more arms from China. Russia initially limited its bombing and shelling of cities now has started to level urban neighborhoods. In the U.S., senators of both parties call for sending jets to Ukraine. The more reckless call for enforcing a no-fly zone, which as Presi-

dent Biden has warned, would lead to U.S. planes shooting down Russian planes, most likely triggering the unimaginable a war between two nuclear powers. Who will speak for peace? The desire to punish the Russians for Putin's invasion is fierce. The desire to aid the Ukrainians in their courageous defense is passionate. The danger is that the war will be fought to the last Ukrainian. The end is a devastated country, a people scattered across Europe, a bloodied invader, Russians suffering under sanctions, and workers and the poor across the globe reeling from soaring gas and wheat prices. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for a cease-fire, and arrangements for safe passage for refugees and casualties. He has indicated a willingness to negotiate, suggesting that, to save the country, Ukraine might accept neutrality, Russian incorporation of Crimea, rights for the separatist Russian-speaking areas in the East in exchange for Russian acceptance of Ukrainian sovereignty. Russian spokesmen have suggested that if Ukraine agreed to permanent neutrality, Crimea, independence for the separatist territories and disarmament, the fighting would stop. Yet, efforts to negotiate even the first step - a cease-fire -have gone nowhere. China and India could play an historic role. Both chose to abstain in the UN vote condemning Russia's invasion. Both chose not to join in imposing sanctions on Russia. China has reaffirmed its "no limits" alliance with Russia - even as its leaders have restated its support for

Photo Getty Ukrainian independence and sovereignty. If the leaders of those two countries interceded with Putin, they would have great weight as possible mediators. What is clear is that, as Dr. Martin Luther King taught us, "we must find an alternative to war and bloodshed." Across the world, a global movement for peace needs to demand an end to the fighting in Ukraine. Negotiations must reach a compromise that both Russia and the Ukrainians can accept. A global effort -- with Russia joining, if Putin truly does think of Ukrainians as part of a Russian family - should then form to help Ukrainians rebuild their country and resettle their people. And then before we rush into a new and costly arms race, intense negotiations should explore security arrangements that might save us from another era

of dangerous great power conflict. Dr. King explained our challenge: "Through our scientific and technological genius, we have made of this world a neighborhood and yet we have not had the ethical commitment to make of it a brotherhood. But somehow, and in some way, we have got to do this. We must all learn to live together as brothers, or we will all perish together as fools." jjackson@rainbowpush.org. BUSINESS: GM EXPANDS ITS NORTH AMERICA-FOCUSED EV SUPPLY CHAIN WITH POSCO CHEMICAL IN CANADA By www.StyleMagazine.com
G
eneral Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) and POSCO Chemical announced that they are working with the governments of Canada and Quebec to build a new facility in Bécancour, Quebec, estimated at $400 million (C$500 million). The new facility will produce cathode active material (CAM) for GM’s Ultium batteries, which will power electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC HUMMER EV and Cadillac LYRIQ. The companies previously announced plans to form a CAM processing joint venture in December 2021, majority owned by POSCO Chemical. Construction on the new facility, which the joint venture will operate, will begin immediately and will create approximately 200 jobs. The site’s construction will allow for future expansion opportunities as GM continues to pursue many potential future EV supply chain projects. “GM and our supplier partners are creating a new, more secure and more sustainable ecosystem for EVs,

POLITICAL: SHALANDA YOUNG BECOMES FIRST BLACK WOMAN TO LEAD WHITE HOUSE BUDGET OFFICE By Kate Sullivan and Ali Zaslav, CNN/StyleMagazine.com
Shalanda D. Young (Pablo Martinez Monsivais/Associated Press)
S
halanda Young on Tuesday became the first Black woman to lead the White House budget office after the Senate confirmed her to the Cabinet-level position with bipartisan support. The vote was 61-36. Young has served as acting director of the Office of Management and Budget for the past year. She was confirmed last March by the Senate to serve as the deputy director and ascended to the top role after Neera Tanden's nomination was withdrawn because Tanden didn't have enough support in the Senate. Nearly nine months after Tanden's nomination was withdrawn, Biden officially nominated Young as director. "Another glass ceiling shattered by a remarkable member of the President's his-

toric Cabinet," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said of Young in a speech on the Senate floor on Monday ahead of the vote. Schumer said, "It shouldn't have taken this long to confirm someone as obviously as qualified as Shalanda Young. She's been leading the OMB for nearly a year. She knows the budget and appropriations processes like the back of her hand. She's proven capable of working with Republicans and Democrats alike. And it was through her guidance the administration notched some of its biggest victories including the passage of the bipartisan infrastructure law." When Tanden's nomination fell through last year, many Democrats on Capitol Hill pushed for Young to get the top job. The

Congressional Black Caucus rallied behind Young for the job in the Biden administration, as did House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her entire House Democratic leadership team. Young was the first Black woman to serve as the staff director of the House Appropriations Committee and won bipartisan praise for her work in that role. She worked on the committee for more than 14 years and took over as staff director in 2017. The key office, which oversees all budget development and execution and has significant influence over the President's agenda, has been without a Senate-confirmed leader since the President took office last January. It was the last Cabinet-level position that remained unfilled.

Some experts criticized the delay in naming an official director and argued that while acting directors can still perform the full range of official duties they lack the full weight of the permanent title. In addition to budget development and execution, OMB reviews an array of policies and rules throughout the federal government.

POLITICAL: AOC DEMANDS ACCOUNTABILITY FOR HIGH GAS PRICES AS CRUDE OIL PRICE DROPS Sharon Zhang, www.Truthout.com
A
s crude oil prices fall but gas prices remain high, progressive lawmakers are calling for accountability for “profiteering” fossil fuel companies, pointing out the deterministic power that such corporations hold over the country. Over roughly the past week, crude oil prices have been dropping after they spiked in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Crude oil prices are now closer to what they were before the invasion began. Meanwhile, although prices at the pump soared as crude oil prices increased, they have stayed high even as crude oil prices have fallen; according to AAA, prices may still continue rising, though they seem to be plateauing for now at around $4.30 per gallon on average. Lawmakers say that the reason prices at the pump have remained high is because companies are taking advantage of the crisis in Ukraine and the pandemic. As Big Oil’s profits have climbed, dropping crude oil prices have only highlighted the oil industry’s greed and price gouging, progressives argue. “Big oil CEOs need to be held accountable for profiteering, this can’t stand,” said Rep.
10
Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) in response to crude oil prices dropping on Monday. Oil companies are “profiteering,” wrote Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York). “And there should be consequences for it.” Ocasio-Cortez further expressed frustration that right wingers and self-proclaimed capitalists are complaining about gas prices while seemingly misunderstanding that it is capitalism that has brought gas prices to where they are. “Many folks run around claiming to be ‘free-market’ capitalists, but what they actually are is captured market capitalists, using subsidies and restrictive policy to hold us hostage to fossil fuels, for-profit healthcare/housing, etc. that many wouldn’t choose if they had the choice,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Monday. “If you think gas is expensive now, imagine if we actually had to pay the true price without” the billions of dollars that the U.S. spends on fossil fuel subsidies, Ocasio-Cortez continued. “If fossil fuel companies didn’t have such tipped scales for them it’s very likely we’d be much further along with cheaper alternatives.” The same price-gouging methods go for prescrip-

tion drug prices and housing, the lawmaker said. Democrats have been seeking legislative solutions to current gas prices. Last week, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-California) and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-Rhode Island) introduced legislation to tax oil and gas companies’ windfall profits as oil prices reach record highs. The legislation would place a tax on the difference between current barrel prices and average pre-pandemic prices, disincentivizing oil companies from keeping prices high in order to pad their profits and please big investors. Revenue from that tax would be redistributed to the public, phasing out for people who make $75,000 in income yearly. “Why is the price of oil LOWER today than it was in 2014 while the average price for a gallon of gas nationwide is 80 cents a gallon HIGHER than it was eight years ago? Answer: Corporate greed,” wrote Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) on Tuesday. “Now is no time for profiteering. Now is the time for a windfall profits tax.” Oil companies have come under scrutiny over the past year as customers have had to
www.StyleMagazine.com
pay more at the pump while profits for companies like Exxon and Chevron have soared. Although corporations have been blaming inflation for high prices, a report last year found that in the first nine months of 2021, the top 24 oil and gas companies made $174 billion in profits while shelling out $44 billion for stock buybacks and dividends. Experts say that part of the reason why gas prices are so high is because oil companies are drilling less, restricting supplies in order to raise prices. “This is the moment the oil and gas industry has been waiting for,” Clark Williams-Derry, energy analyst at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, told Earther. “They don’t want to spoil the dividend party. They’re finally generating the cash their investors have expected them to do all along.”

NATIONAL: FEDERAL RESERVE HIKES INTEREST RATES FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2018 By Anneken Tappe, CNN Business
Fed Chair Pro Tempore Jerome Powell (Photo EPA-EFE)
W
hile The Federal Reserve is raising interest rates for the first time since 2018, the central bank announced Wednesday at the conclusion of its highly anticipated two-day monetary policy meeting. The move marks the end of the Fed's pandemic-era easy money policy and comes amid soaring inflation across America. The federal funds rate now stands at 0.25-0.5%. "We feel the economy is very strong and will be able to withstand tighter monetary policy," Fed Chair Pro Tempore Jerome Powell told journalists during Wednesday's post-meeting press conference. The quarter-percentage-point increase had been well telegraphed by the central bank, with Powell hinting at it repeatedly over the past few months. Earlier this month, he told lawmakers that he favored a quarter-point raise. This is the first rate increase since December 2018 and the first time rates have moved from their level of near zero since the bank slashed them almost exactly two years ago in March 2020
in the wake of the pandemic. Prices have soared over the past year for the majority of Americans, pushing inflation well above the Fed's long-term target of 2% and forcing its hand. The central bank has a dual mandate to keep prices stable and employment at the maximum. But during the pandemic, prices have risen on the back of high demand, supply chain chaos and higher energy costs. Initially, Powell referred to the pandemic inflation as "transitory" before retiring the use of the term during a Congressional hearing last November. All the expectations for factors that could bring down inflation -- such as an improvement in the supply chain gridlock and rising labor force participation -- have not materialized, Powell said. So the Fed had to act. For the year ended in February, consumer prices rose 7.9%, while the prices US producers received for their goods soared 10% over the same period. Neither figure is adjusted for seasonal swings. Meanwhile, the US labor market recov-
ery has come along swiftly following the shock of the spring 2020 shutdown, which marked the largest job loss in history. As of February, the nation was still short 2.1 million jobs compared with the same month two years earlier. Between the strong job market and high inflation only half of the Fed's mandate is fulfilled. What will the Fed do next? Wednesday's policy update also included a new set of projections from the central bank, showing that Fed officials expect a median federal funds rate of 1.9% by the end of this year, before raising it to 2.8% in 2023. But the Fed could also raise rates faster, if inflation does not moderate. The central bank has six meetings left this year. The next one is scheduled for May 3-4. The central bankers also revised up their inflation predictions to a median of 4.3% by year-end, compared with 2.6% projected in December. US economic growth was meanwhile cut to a median 2.8% this year, from the 4% expected in December. Spillovers from the Russia-Ukraine
conflict will hit the US economy and are already putting upward pressure on inflation, Powell said Wednesday. "The implications for the US economy are highly uncertain, but in the near term the invasion and related events are likely to create additional upward pressure on inflation and weigh on economic activity," the Fed said in Wednesday's statement. But there's no reason to worry just yet. "We think that will hit GDP to some extent; 2.8% is still really strong growth," he said. "We feel the economy is very strong and will be able to withstand tighter monetary policy." The-CNN-Wire .

NATIONAL: THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS BROUGHT THE INEQUITIES FACED BY BLACK AMERICANS INTO SHARP FOCUS By Dr. Harry L. Williams, President and CEO of Thurgood Marshall College Fund
W
hile the world has been focused on the growing numbers of COVID-19 causalities, the media has somewhat ignored the long-term educational and economic impacts of the pandemic – especially for Black students. Although there has been some attention given to the disparities between Black Americans and other groups contracting the virus, it is not an exaggeration to say that the Black community will be recovering from the impact of COVID-19, health wise, economically, and educationally for at least the next two decades. Throughout the pandemic, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been on the front lines addressing the impact the pandemic has had on students, faculty, staff and surrounding communities. In March 2020, when college campuses across the country closed and sent students home, many HBCUs continued to house hundreds of students who did not have homes to return to. Groups of students were stuck
12
on campus without the funds to pay for transportation back to their home cities. This challenge was a byproduct of several students losing the jobs they used to help fund their education, along with loss of family income. Many students became both food and housing insecure without the critical resources that HBCUs often provide. The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) worked with our member-schools— America’s 47 publicly-supported HBCUs—and many of their corporate partners to help secure access to needed support for students. Beyond academic scholarships, TMCF stepped up to help provide grants for students, assisting them with rent, groceries, and transportation. At one HBCU, more than half of the students and faculty did not have the adequate computer hardware or broadband internet access to participate in remote classes. Corporate partners supported the purchasing of laptops and hotspots for both students and faculty to facilitate the pivot to online learning.
March 17, 2022 - March 23, 2022
Despite their long history and accolades, HBCUs as a collective have continued to struggle with proper funding, receiving less per-student aid from their states, along with less research funding from the federal government. These institutions are highly tuition dependent, which can cause a great challenge anytime enrollment numbers are compromised. Closing campuses and sending students home meant that many schools had to return housing funds that traditionally would have supported the university’s operations. Recognizing the great infringement that the pandemic placed on the schools, we shifted part of our focus of providing scholarships and career readiness opportunities to work with HBCUs to provide support restructuring their finances, securing new resources, and planning for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years As a legacy corporate partner, McDonald’s stepped up to support HBCU students because of their longstanding commitment to supporting the Black community and empowering the
www.StyleMagazine.com
next generation by creating opportunity through educational initiatives. Today, we call on other major corporations to do the same – address inequities by investing in diverse students, who are posed to be the next generation of changemakers. Their journey to leadership starts with a college degree, and with the proper resources that degree can come from an HBCU. Dr. Harry L. Williams is the President and CEO of Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), the largest organization exclusively representing the Black College Community. .

ear Houstonians,
One year ago today, President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). This economic stimulus plan has been a significant help to cities like Houston that faced record revenue loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit us nearly two years ago, cities were faced with a crisis no one could have prepared for – massive

budget shortfalls forcing cuts to critical services at a time when residents needed them most. But for the funds from ARPA being made available, there would have been significant budgetary cuts and layoffs of Houston police officers, firefighters, employees who pick up our trash and work in our parks and libraries. Without this influx of federal dollars, the city would have had to close a $201 million budget gap in FY 2022. Over the past year, we have utilized ARPA funding to give firefighters an 18 percent pay increase over three years and bolster public safety through the One Safe Houston initiative by investing in personnel, programs, and technology in the Houston Police Department. We also: Created an unprecedented investment with Harris County to house the homeless Partnered with Harris County to provide nearly $280 million in emergency rental assistance to over 70,000 households. A Love Story
THE WEDDING OF ASHLEY TURNER AND JIMMIE CAPTAIN Ashley Turner, daughter of Mayor Sylvester Turner, married Jimmie Captain Saturday night at Citadel Houston with 424 guests in attendance. Ashley Turner wore a custom wedding gown designed by Julie Nma Ihe (@nmacouture). The couple met at a retirement party for Captain’s mother, who worked for the Houston Police Department, a few years ago. They officially began dating two months after that and their relationship blossomed. Then the surprise happened. On Ashley’s birthday last year, Captain “popped the question” at the end of a charity event. Obviously, she said “yes.”

LOCAL: HOUSTON DERMATOLOGIST DEVELOPS NEW CLASS OF TOPICAL PHARMACEUTICAL By www.StyleMagazine.com
After applying Moore Relief Revitalizing & Burn Lotion to this patient’s untreated tradiation-burn scars (left), rapid healing was visible after two days (center) and after two weeks (right).
D
r. Milton D. Moore, a leading dermatologist and founder & CEO of Moore Unique Skin Care, LLC and Moore Unique Dermatology, has introduced two new products under the brand name Moore Relief Dermaceuticals: Moore Relief Pain Discomfort Lotion and Moore Relief Skin
Revitalizing & Burn Lotion. Initially formulated as moisturizing treatments for eczema and other conditions that cause skin irritation, Moore Relief Pain Discomfort Lotion and Moore Relief Skin Revitalizing & Burn Lotion are scientifically proven, fast-acting, effective therapies
that help relieve neuropathic skin discomfort and help heal burn wounds. The findings of Dr. Moore’s clinical research in the development of these products were published in a recent article in the Journal of Dermatology Research (peer reviewed). In clinical research tests, Dr. Moore’s patients applied the Moore Relief Pain Discomfort Lotion topically to areas in which they experienced recurring pain from carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, fibromyalgia, and diabetic neuropathy. Most patients reported apparent relief of 75 to 100 percent, and the relief lasted from 7 to 24 hours with one application. In other clinical studies, the Moore Relief Revitalizing Burn Repair Lotion was applied topically to the burn scars of Dr. Moore’s patients recovering from first and second-degree burns. The lotion was proven to help accelerate healing from several months down to as little as 14 days with return of normal skin color, while preventing the appearance of scars
and providing immediate cooling and pain relief. Both patent-pending Moore Relief Dermaceuticals products are formulated with moisturizing and anti-inflammatory agents such as aloe vera, extracts of algae, argan oil as well as other natural ingredients. These products use Dr. Moore’s patented transdermal delivery system, which enables the active ingredients to be absorbed by the skin quickly. Each ingredient provides a unique contribution to the effectiveness of the products by cooling, moisturizing, and repairing damaged skin areas.

LOCAL: HOUSTON NATIVE SERVES ABOARD FLOATING AIRPORT USS CARL VINSON By Chief Mass Communication Specialist Jeffery Tilghman Williams, Navy Office of Community Outreach
Abdulmajeed Idris
P
etty Officer 3rd Class Abdulmajeed Idris, a native of Houston, Texas, serves the U.S. Navy aboard one of the world’s largest warships, the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. Idris joined the Navy two years ago. Today, Idris serves as an aviation boatswain’s mate (equipment). “I joined the Navy to secure a career for myself in America,” said Idris. Growing up in Houston, Idris attended Aud High School and graduated in 2001. Today, Idris relies upon skills and values similar to those found in Houston to succeed in the military. “My hometown taught me that respect is very important,” said Idris. “In the Navy, that’s true whether you're interacting with junior or senior military personnel. We are all working together on the same team to accomplish
one goal.” Aircraft carriers provide unique capabilities and survivability. They are a powerful exhibition of the American Navy's legacy of innovation, technological evolution, and maritime dominance, according to Navy officials. USS Carl Vinson, like each of the Navy’s aircraft carriers, is designed for a 50-year service life. When the air wing is embarked, the ship carries more than 70 attack fighter jets, helicopters and other aircraft, all of which take off from and land aboard the carrier at sea. With more than 5,000 sailors serving aboard, Carl Vinson is a self-contained mobile airport. Aircraft carriers are often the first response to a global crisis because of their ability to operate freely in international waters anywhere on the world’s oceans. Carrier strike groups have the unique advantage of mobility, making them far more strategically advantageous than fixed-site bases. No other weapon system can deploy and operate forward with a full-sized, nuclear-powered aircraft carrier's speed, endurance, agility, and the combat capability of its air wing. The Carl Vinson and its crew recently returned to San Diego following an eight-month deployment to U.S. 3rd and 7th Fleets areas of operation. “At the heart of every ship, whether ashore or at sea, are the Sailors that make up the crew and carry out the Navy’s missions with precision and dedication,” said Capt. P. Scott Miller, commanding officer of Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. “The Vinson Sailors recently demonstrated this in our execution of a highly successful 7th Fleet deployment and continue this legacy of excellence at home in San Diego.” During the USS Carl Vinson’s most recent deployment the ship was underway for 262 days, conducting dual carrier operations and multinational exercises, including maritime security operations and integrated training between surface and air units. USS Carl Vinson was the first aircraft carrier to deploy with a combination of fourth and fifth-generation platforms within Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2 that represent the “Air Wing of the Future,” including the F-35C Lightning
IIs and the CMV-22B Ospreys. Since USS Langley's commissioning 100 years ago, the nation's aircraft carriers, such as USS Carl Vinson, and embarked carrier air wings have projected power, sustained sea control, bolstered deterrence, provided humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and maintained enduring commitments worldwide. "The aircraft carrier is our U.S. Navy's centerpiece, our flagship, and a constant reminder to the rest of the world of our enduring maritime presence and influence," said Rear Arm. James P. Downey, USN, Program Executive Officer (PEO) Aircraft Carriers. "These ships touch every part of our Navy's mission to project power, ensure sea control, and deter our adversaries." With more than 90 percent of all trade traveling by sea, and 95 percent of the world’s international phone and internet traffic carried through fiber optic cables lying on the ocean floor, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity and security of the United States is directly linked to a strong and ready Navy. Idris and the sailors he serves with have many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during their military service. “My greatest career accomplishment to date was being promoted for my academic performance in my rate training school,” said Idris. “I was number one in my class.” As Idris and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy. “Serving in the Navy means a lot to me,” added Idris. “I am part of a team that protects the seas from enemies and secures freedom of navigation for commerce.”

LOCAL: STORE MANAGER CHASES VAN AFTER THIEVES STEAL MORE THAN 1,000 GALLONS OF DIESEL By David Williams, www.CNN.com
T
he manager of a family-owned gas station in Houston, Texas, chased off suspected thieves, who he said had already taken more than a thousand gallons of diesel fuel from the store's underground tanks in separate incidents. Jerry Thayil, whose father owns the Fuqua Express station, told CNN the thieves hit the station three days in a row last week and got away with between $5,000 and $6,000 worth of fuel.
20
They tried for a fourth time on Friday, but Thayil ran after them. Surveillance video shows him racing across the store's parking lot as a dark colored minivan drove off. "I didn't want to just let them hit us again and lose another $1,200, $1,300," he said. "So I decided I would do something about it and I ran out there and chased them away." The thefts come as police in the US are warning drivers to take steps to protect their vehicles from possible gas thieves as fuel prices surge to historic levels. Thayil said he noticed discrepancies in the station's fuel levels on Wednesday and Thursday. He went through the station's security footage and saw a dark minivan park on top of the lids covering the opening to the station's tanks on the days the fuel went missing. Thayil said the van apparently was equipped with a trap door so the occupants could get to the tank and pump out the fuel without being seen. They were able to get away with 300-350 gallons of diesel fuel at a time, he said.

"We're a family-owned business, so every penny counts around here," he said. "We're supporting 11 employees who work here. They have they have their own families, so we don't want to let them down." The Houston Police Department is investigating the incident. A police spokesman told CNN they have not seen an increase in gas thefts, despite sky-high prices. Thayil said this was the first time his station has dealt with fuel thefts. He said the business is talking with its insurance company to see if the thefts are covered.

LOCAL: DR RUTH SIMMONS STEPPING DOWN AS PRAIRIE VIEW A&M UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
T
By www.StyleMagazine.com
he NRG filled uIn an open letter to the students, faculty, alumni, and friends Dr. Ruth Simmons announced that she would be stepping down from the presidency at Prairie View A&M University. Below is the letter in its entirety:
I write today to update you on my plans as I complete my fifth year as your president. When I agreed to join Prairie View A&M University in July of 2017, I anticipated a brief stint at the helm, allowing the University to transition to new leadership following the departure of President George Wright. That brief stint evolved into a period of sustained effort to address issues that threatened the health and stature of this great University. That is what PV is above all – a university. Among all the wonderful things we do and the opportunities we afford, the aspect of our identity that will always count most is how much we excel in teaching, learning, scholarship and research. When we falter or fail in any one of those areas, we jeopardize the future of the University and the value of a PV degree. For that reason, I argued early on that three elements were of overriding importance and in need of concentrated attention: the state of the faculty, financial support for our students and the financial security of the University. I am pleased to say that while we have not made anywhere near the progress I had hoped for, there have nevertheless been quite substantial gains in all of these categories. Among those that are the most meaningful are the following: -Support of Faculty. We have reduced the faculty teaching load, greatly expanded faculty development resources, opened the tenure track ranks to qualified non-tenure-track faculty, increased the financial reward for advancement to associate and full professor and otherwise begun to create an environment that promotes high scholarly performance and
Ruth J. Simmons (Photo: Prairie View A&M) builds an attractive environment for faculty recruitment. -Student Financial Support. We have added substantially to our scholarship endowments and our fundraising for student support. -Financial Well-Being. We have improved our financial well-being, growing the endowment by 40% thanks to the MacKenzie Scott gift and our decision to invest a substantial portion of that gift in
the endowment

HEALTH: APPLE CIDER VINEGAR: 13 USES FOR IT THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE By www.StyleMagazine.com
O
f all the well-touted natural health remedies that exist today, very few are followed quite as religiously as taking a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar every day. Apple cider vinegar has been hailed as a cure-all supplement, from allergy relief to weight loss. Anywhere you look, you can find people who believe that drinking apple cider vinegar has helped them. With all the benefits, it’s hard to figure out what ACV is not good for. What exactly are the benefits of apple cider vinegar? Weight Loss The idea that apple cider vinegar somehow “speeds up fat loss is altogether a myth.” There is no evidence to suggest that apple cider vinegar can affect metabolism, which is the way an individual breaks down food and burns calories.
22
Appetite Suppression A 2006 study found that people who took doses of vinegar while eating bread reported feeling more full than people who ate bread alone. While this study has been cited by those who believe in the health benefits of apple cider vinegar, it is important to note that it only tested 12 individuals, and the authors concluded that much more research was needed before firm conclusions could be drawn. This study did not suggest that the way these people burned calories was affected. Detox Bath Use ACV in your bath. Add ½- 1 cup to your bath water along with Epsom salts and lavender essential oil for a relaxing and detoxifying bath. Hiccups Be Gone! I like using apple cider vinegar to get rid of hiccups—the sour taste of a straight teaspoon can stop hiccups. Exercise Exhaustion (Recover Faster) Beat exercise exhaustion—lactic acid buildup in the body causes fatigue, while the amino acids in ACV act as an antidote. Add a tablespoon to a glass of water after a workout. Energy Boost Don’t reach for a chemical-filled energy drink if you’re feeling tired. Instead, grab a bottle of apple cider vinegar for an energy boost. The potassium and enzymes in apple cider vinegar help to give you a pick me up. Just add some ACV to a glass of water. I like adding it to my water during a workout to prevent fatigue.
March 17, 2022 - March 23, 2022
The amino acids in apple cider vinegar combat lactic acid build-up that can happen after exercise. Lowering Cholesterol Levels A successful study was done on rats but has yet to be replicated in humans. The study found that rats on a diet with an acetic acid supplement had lower cholesterol levels than rats without the acetic acid supplement. Acetic acid is one of the ingredients in apple cider vinegar and many other kinds of vinegar. For those who believe in the health benefits of apple cider vinegar, this study is promising. But there are other things to consider before assuming that the findings will be true in humans — primarily that there are key differences between the metabolism of rats and humans. The study authors recommend that the next trial be on hamsters, which break down fat in a way that is more similar to humans. Diabetes Management A few studies have found that apple cider vinegar helped in the management of diabetes; however, these studies are also limited by their small size. One study, which found that taking vinegar at bedtime reduces blood sugar levels the next morning in people with tcype 2 diabetes, examined only 11 people. Another study found that taking cider vinegar might have some effect on insulin sensitivity in some diabetes patients, but that research, too, was limited by the small number of people being studied. Hair Restorer Apple cider vinegar has long been used
www.StyleMagazine.com
as a natural hair care product to promote healthy hair in both men and women. Its acidity is close to that of natural hair, it’s a good conditioner and cleaning agent and it’s also an effective germ killer. As a result, apple cider vinegar uses and benefits for the hair include: • Vinegar hair rinse • Hair Herbal rinse • Essential oil vinegar hair rinse • Dandruff and itchy scalp relief • Natural hair loss treatment • Home Remedy for head lice Teeth Whitener Yellow teeth are no match for apple cider vinegar. For stubborn stains, rub apple cider vinegar directly on your teeth then rinse with water. Be careful not to do this too often, as it can break down tooth enamel. For a less abrasive whitening mouthwash, mix one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with a cup of water, then swish around in your mouth. Researchers are still involved in new studies about apple cider vinegar which may soon offer more information on how this really works.

ENTERTAINMENT: BUN B BROUGHT A SHOW TO RODEO HOUSTON FANS WILL NEVER FORGET By Story Keandra Scott Tatum, www.StyleMagazine.com
he NRG filled up with fans wearing throwback jerseys, caps, cowboy boots and hats; it was so Texas-like. Fans were singing and rapping to the top of their lungs as people reminisced on the ‘good ol’ days’. Bun B made history as the first African-American to headline Rodeo Houston and it’s definitely clear he has more than just Texas talking about the Super Bowl level performance. The UGK legend brought out Big Pokey, Paul Wall, Lil’ Keke, Frankie J, ESG, Chamillionaire, Baby Bash, ESG, Lil’ Flip, Slim Thug, R&B songstress LeToya Luckett, R&B crooners H-Town, Devin the Dude, Z-Ro, and Willie D (The Geto Boys). We got a chance to embrace more recent Houston superstars such as the Nwigwe family- Tobe and Fat who are known for their monochromatic color scheme and pale mint green set. Viral freestyle princess and Nickelodeon standout That Girl Lay Lay hit the stage with some major energy. As the stage rotated the back drop interchanged based on known labels and a slide show paying homage to Pimp C (UGK), S.U.C. Founder DJ Screw, Fat Pat, Big Hawk, and Big Mello. There were so many highlights of the night as the all-star lineup performed classics but there were two moments where the crowd’s reaction surged over-the-top. When Lil’ Ke’Ke came out to perform the “Southside” anthem, almost the entire stadium had their hands in the air ‘rubbing their heads’ as they swayed from left-to-right. In the midst of Z-Ro’s set finishing, three candy-colored slabs came out of no where unexpectedly doing what they do best on hydraulics and popping trunks. It truly was a sight to see! J. Prince (CEO of Rap-A-Lot Records) graced the stage to give a warm thanks to Houston and Bun B for such a tremendous turn-out. The show ended with Bun B thanking and hugging his friends whom he considers family in the industry; it was emotional. As a Houston-based publication that covers Black Heritage Night traditionally, we can truly say Bun B did something really special for the city. The UGK rapper made sure to pay homage to the late Chad Butler better known as Pimp
Bun B (Photo Courtesy of HLS&R Black Heritage Day) C through and through. There was even a dressing room across from the ‘Queen of Tejano’, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez in honor of the fallen member who died at the young age of 33 years old in 2007. As fans were leaving out of NRG, it was announced that Black Heritage Night had reached a record breaking crowd of over 73K attendees. There is no doubt Bun B has set the bar for Houston’s very own world-renowned Rodeo as Hip-Hop/Rap was embraced in a historical and legendary way. It’s unclear at the moment if a show

similar will happen next year, but, if you got a chance to witness the epic show, you would understand the demand is at an all-time high for an encore.
