COMMENTARY
GUN VIOLENCE RISES AS EASY ACCESS TO GUNS RISES By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
V
iolence is on the rise across this country. Murder rates are up dramatically during the pandemic. Most people associate gun violence and rising murder rates with urban areas that are disproportionately African American or Latino. But violence is not color-coded. If it were, the war between Russia and Ukraine would be labeled white violence. Republicans have made rising murder rates one of their attack lines against Democrats who they label as being soft on crime. They also claim Democrats are defunding the police. But no city has defunded its police. In fact, police budgets are up across the country. Ironically, the highest murder rates are in states that voted for Donald Trump, not those that voted for Joe Biden. Eight of the top 10 states with the highest murder rates voted for Donald Trump. Murder rates were 40 percent higher in the 25 states that voted for Trump than those that voted for Biden. Mississippi has by far the highest murder rate in the country, followed by Louisiana. Mississippi’s murder rate is a stunning 400 percent higher than that of New York and 250 percent higher than that of California. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco has half the murder rate of Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s Bakersfield. Gun violence rises as easy access to guns rises. Many mayors and city councils in big cities seek to put severe restrictions on guns – banning assault weapons, limiting handguns, banning
open carry, requiring testing, licensing and registration. Sadly, in many states, the gun lobby has enlisted Republicans at the state level to pre-empt – block – efforts to control guns at the local level. Now Republican leaders seem intent on a race to the bottom, on who can cater most to the gun lobby, who can be the most macho, the most extreme, the most Trumpy. The gun lobby is pushing for laws that allow open carrying of a handgun without a permit. Twenty-five states already have such laws. In Texas, the laws permit open carry without a permit, no waiting period, no magazine limit, no universal background check. These guns are not for hunters. Over 35 percent of Texas residents own a gun; only 3.9 percent have a paid hunting license. In Florida, which has witnessed some of the worst mass murders in recent years, Gov. Ron DeSantis, eager to become Trump’s successor, has promised to deliver the same for the gun lobby. Open carry – in football stadiums, in bars, in schools, on university campuses – what could possibly go wrong? Violence isn’t color-coded. It is a spirit, a demon. In the pandemic, more and more people grow fearful and frustrated. Anger congeals, resentment builds. When guns are easily available and near at hand, too often that anger can be expressed in violence. In these days, as our politics gets more partisan, as political rhetoric grows more abusive, political violence is rising. After the outbreak
of COVID-19, violence against Asian Americans soared, as if they were somehow responsible. Violence against immigrants rose as the vicious rhetoric about them escalated. Targeted violence against Jews and synagogues, Muslims and mosques is also on the rise. We need practical plans and bold initiatives for disarmament both at home and abroad. In cities, we need new efforts to bring all the stakeholders together – officials, community leaders, clerics of all faiths, gang leaders, police – to discuss ways to reduce the level of violence, and to get rid of the guns. An arms race between the miscreants and the police is not a sensible answer, particularly in an era when assault weapons are no longer banned. Political posturing won’t bring down the level of violence. Making guns ever more available with ever
TEXAS DEMOCRATS HAVE TO WIN ELECTIONS Statement from Carroll G. Robinson on Draft United States Supreme Court Roe v. Wade Decision By Carroll G. Robinson – Special To StyleMagazine.com

he draft United States Supreme Court opinion that indicates that five Republican Justices plan to overrule Roe v. Wade, while also laying the groundwork to dismantle the progress that has been made on protecting the rights of the LGBTQI+ community is another stark reminder of the need for Democrats, in the United States Senate, to act now to protect the rights of women to make healthcare decisions concerning their own bodies and to also better protect LGBTQI+ Americans.

Everyone in the Democratic Coalition is under all-out attack by Republicans in our states and our nation’s Capital. The draft Supreme Court opinion is also a reminder that Texas Democrats must once again start winning statewide races and that we cannot go another decade with Democrats in the minority in the Texas State House and State Senate and being shutout of statewide offices. Republicans are turning Dr. King’s Dream into a nightmare, and they

Violence will be reduced when we address its causes and reduce the availability of its instruments. Perhaps murders will decline as we move beyond the pandemic. (You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@ rainbowpush.org. Wade has made it clear that we are truly in a fight for the future of our state and nation. If there is no right to privacy for women in our nation, and no right to equal protection under the law for LGBTQI+ Americans, what hope is there for the rest of us if Republicans remain in control in Texas and win back Congress? The Danger is real, and Texas Democrats must win.

NATIONAL: CAN FEDERAL LYNCHING LAWS HELP TO HEAL AMERICA? By Dr. Gail C Christopher – Special To StyleMagazine.com
F
or three centuries lynching was a standard practice in the cruel treatment of Black men, women, and children in America. Even after slavery, Blacks from 1882 – 1959 were lynched on average every six days, totaling at least 4,733 brutal deaths, according to researchers at the Tuskegee Institute. Now, after more than a century of advocacy, legislation declaring lynching a federal crime was recently signed into law. Despite decades of senseless delays, this new law pushes America to finally acknowledge that racism often correlates to a level of violence and terror woven into the very fabric of this country. Centuries of lynching, brutality, and unspeakable violence against Black people in U.S. history was considered normal, even Christian, according to author Terry Anne Scott in her new book, Lynching and Leisure. Church socials were organized around lynching of Black people. White families and children posed for photos with the hanging corpses and even sent these grotesque images through the mail as postcards.
This sociopathic behavior manifests as a total absence of conscience as violence and harm are inflicted upon others. It is recognized today as a severe personality disorder and/ or mental derangement. Those vile and unlawful acts traumatized more than just the victims, family, and friends. Lynching sent a chilling message through entire communities: this is for you, too, if you dare to upend the racial hierarchy that puts Whites ahead of Blacks in every aspect of society. Though it can be disturbing to acknowledge, this country sanctioned these hideous acts before this law was enacted; that remains one of America’s hidden truths. With no federal law deeming lynching illegal, America could turn a blind eye to these atrocities. Sponsored by U.S. Rep. Bobby L. Rush in the House (D-Ill) and Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) in the Senate, the Senate unanimously passed the Emmet Till Anti-Lynching Legislation, and House approved it 422 to 3. With this law finally in place, the dawning of a racial reckoning in the United States seems
more believable than ever before. In 2020, George Floyd’s brutal murder sparked global outrage, protests, and demands for racial equity - sentiments expressed with deepened intensity and purpose. COVID-19 has killed more than six million people and devastated families around the world. Today, scenes of suffering and destruction in Ukraine grip us all. The collective outpouring of grief may be creating a special moment. We are saturated with pain and loss, contributing to a higher, increased capacity for empathy and compassion. Is it possible these heart-wrenching narratives merged into our collective consciousness and produced an environment where 100 years of failure to produce a federal lynching law was transformed, paving the way for a milestone accomplishment? All people of color can now celebrate this victory as Black people were not the only race to suffer from lynching. The inspiration and name behind this legislation stems from Emmett Till, a 14-year-old Black
youth from Chicago lynched in 1955 near Money, Mississippi after Whites believed he offended a White woman in a grocery store. In other parts of the nation, the pain and suffering from lynching was also felt throughout history. In the 1800s, across the frontier, 137 Native Americans were lynched. During the Los Angeles Chinese Massacre of 1871, a mob killed 19 Chinese immigrants, 15 of whom were hanged, some after they were shot. Showing compassion for those opposing your beliefs is a key component of racial healing. A democracy cannot survive without a critical mass of the population having empathy and care for those perceived as different and holding alternative views. The war in Ukraine illustrates what can happen when false narratives enable violence. This monumental moment could be propelling America on a journey towards healing and transformation.

ROE V WADE: COLLINS CALLS DRAFT ROE OPINION 'COMPLETELY INCONSISTENT' WITH WHAT GORSUCH AND KAVANAUGH SAID. . . The 1st Draft found, No. 19-1392 , was dated February 10, 2022 By Clare Foran and Manu Raju, CNN / StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
GOP U.S. Senator – Susan Collins
G
OP Sen. Susan Collins said on Tuesday that a Supreme Court draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade published by Politico was «completely inconsistent» with what Justice Neil Gorsuch and Justice Brett Kavanaugh «said in their hearings and in our meetings in my office.» “If this leaked draft opinion is the final decision and this reporting is accurate, it would be completely inconsistent with what Justice Gorsuch and Justice Kavanaugh said in their hearings and in our meetings in my office,” Collins said in a statement. “Obviously, we won’t know each Justice’s decision and reasoning until the Supreme Court officially announces its opinion in this case.” Asked if she was misled by Kavanaugh, Collins told CNN, “My statement speaks for itself.” On Monday, Politico reported it had obtained what it calls a draft of a majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito that would strike down Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 Su-
preme Court ruling that legalized abortion nationwide. The draft was circulated in early February, according to Politico. The final opinion has not been released and votes and language can change before opinions are formally released. The opinion in this case is not expected to be published until late June. CNN has not independently confirmed the document’s authenticity. Politico says it has authenticated the draft. A Supreme Court spokesperson declined to comment to CNN. According to the draft, the court would overturn Roe v. Wade’s holding of a federal constitutional right to an abortion. The opinion would be the most consequential abortion decision in decades and transform the landscape of women’s reproductive health in America. It appears that five justices would be voting to overturn Roe. Chief Justice John Roberts did not want to completely overturn Roe v. Wade, meaning he would have dissented from part of Alito’s draft opinion, sources tell CNN, likely with the court’s three liberals. That would mean that the five conservative justices that would make up
the majority overturning Roe are Alito and Justices Clarence Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. Collins, a key Senate swing vote, voted in support of both Gorsuch and Kavanaugh’s confirmations to the high court. The Maine Republican has faced intense scrutiny -- and criticism from liberals -- over her record of Supreme Court votes and the issue of abortion rights. In 2018, Collins told reporters Kavanaugh had told her he agreed that Roe v. Wade is settled law. “We talked about whether he considered Roe to be settled law. He said that he agreed with what Justice Roberts said at his nomination hearing in which he said it was settled law,” Collins said at the time after meeting with Kavanaugh. In 2019, Collins defended her vote to confirm Kavanaugh, saying in an interview with CNN that despite his vote in a recent abortion access case, she did not believe Kavanaugh would ultimately vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. “I have always been concerned about preserving Roe v. Wade,” Collins said then, adding that Kavanaugh
had given her assurances during his confirmation process that the landmark opinion was safe. Collins later told reporters on Tuesday that she wants to see Roe v. Wade be the law of the land as she discussed a bill she introduced with GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski in February that would codify the abortion rights that Roe established. “The deal that Lisa Murkowski and I introduced, it would, in my judgment, have broader support. It’s much more tailored. It preserves the conscience exception, for example, but it clearly would make Roe v. Wade and the Casey vs. Planned Parenthood decisions the law of the land, and that’s what I’d like to see,” Collins said. There is likely no real path forward for the bill, however, given that it would need at least 60 votes to overcome a filibuster and there won›t be 10 GOP votes.

ART: The Art of M.C. Escher from Michael S. Sachs Collection Is Open at the MFA Houston By Kathy Coleman - StyleMagazine.com
H
ouston debuted this major retrospective of over 300 works on paper and more than 100 of the artist’s carved wood blocks, constructed objects and working tools back in March, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston opened the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of works by M.C. Escher ever held, from the collection of Michael S. Sachs, who gathered works over 50 years and acquired ninety percent of the Escher estate in 1980. The exhibition will include more than 400 prints, drawings, watercolors, printed fabrics, constructed objects (such as the Angels and Devils sphere), wood and linoleum blocks, lithographic stones, sketchbooks, and the artist’s working tools. Organized by the MFAH, the exhibition will be on view through September 5, 2022. Maurits Cornelis Escher (Dutch, 18981972), popularly referred to as M.C. Escher, is known internationally for his self-described “mental images,” which connect to mathematics and various branches of science. Considered a “oneman art movement,” he remained outside of the art establishment. Escher was heralded in the psychedelic era of the 1960s and 1970s and is treasured today for his mind-bending works. “The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is pleased to present this broad selection of works by M.C. Escher, drawn from the most extensive Escher collection in the world,” said Gary Tinterow, Director and Margaret Alkek Williams Chair, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. “Escher is an artist who defies characterization. His singular, sometimes unsettling works, with their orchestration of multi-dimen-
sional alternate realities, have rightfully become icons of the 20th century.”
Evolution of Escher Imagery
Over his 50-year artistic career, Escher’s imagery evolved from realistic observations of the world around him to inventions from his own imagination that explored the relationships between art and science, order and disorder, and logic and irrationality. Escher once commented: “You have to retain a sense of wonder, that’s what it’s all about.” Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Escher was preoccupied with the Italian landscape and the architecture of Italian cities. It was during this period that he began experimenting with perspective in his work. The patterned, color tiles from Moorish architecture he saw in Spain in 1922 and 1936 were transformed in Escher’s hands from geometrical symmetries to identifiable human figures, angels, and other creatures, such as insects, birds, fish, and reptiles. In Hand with Reflecting Sphere (1935) and Magic Mirror (1946), the effect of the globe and mirror reflections creates two co-existing worlds in time and place. Included in this exhibition will be the never-ending tessellating cycle Metamorphosis III (1939–68), Escher’s largest print, more than 22 feet in length and accompanied by its 31 woodblocks. Virtual Realities: The Art of M.C. Escher from the Michael S. Sachs Collection Upper Brown Pavilion, Caroline Wiess Law Building through September 5, 2022

I
n keeping with the venue’s mission of fostering new audiences and enhancing an appreciation for the arts, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is excited to announce its 2022 Performing Arts Season, featuring exciting symphonic experiences, family-friendly events and more! The Pavilion will kick off the performing arts season with a concert and movie on June 16 at The Little Mermaid – Film with Live Orchestra, sponsored by Texas Children’s Hospital – The Woodlands! As Disney’s animated classic plays on the large LED screens, the Houston Symphony will perform the film’s Oscar® and Grammy®-winning score live on the Main Stage. To make the evening even sweeter, free ice cream will be available to guests (while supplies last) when gates open in the North Plaza. On July 27, pay tribute to The Beatles with the Houston Symphony at Classical Mystery Tour. The four musicians may look and sound just like The Beatles, but Classical Mystery Tour is more than just a rock concert. The show presents more than two dozen Beatles tunes performed exactly as they were originally recorded. Hear “Penny Lane” with a live trumpet section, experience the beauty of “Yesterday” with an acoustic guitar and string quartet, enjoy the classical/rock blend on “I Am the Walrus,” and relish the cascading crescendos on “A Day in the Life.” From early Beatles music on through the solo years, Classical Mystery Tour is the best of The Beatles like you have never heard them before. As the “Summer Home” for the Houston Symphony, attendees are guaranteed to be entertained all season by an exciting lineup of orchestra performances including Star-Spangled Salute on July 3, A Night on Broadway July 14 and the annual Hocus Pocus Pops on October 14.
