The House of Representatives yesterday passed a roughly $40 billion bill to deliver aid to Ukraine as it continues to face Russia’s brutal assault. The measure will next need to be passed by the Senate before it can go to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. According to the measure, billions of dollars will be used to send military equipment and weapons from US stocks to Ukraine and to purchase weapons from contractors, among several other allocations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the “friends” of his country for approving the bill. This comes as Belarus, an ally of Russia, said it will deploy special forces to the border of Ukraine because “the United States and its allies continue to increase their military presence at the state borders,” a military official said.

COMMENTARY
PEACE IS THE PRESENCE OF JUSTICE By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
J
ustice Alito’s draft decision to overturn Roe v. Wade asserts that women have no constitutional right over their own bodies that man or law must respect. This arbitrary opinion in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, part of the brazen effort of reactionary judges to roll back decades of progress toward a more perfect union, scorns the will of the vast majority of Americans. That the Supreme Court now convenes huddled behind concrete bunkers and unscalable metal fences is testament to the fury that this judicial wilding has already sparked. The parallels to the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision in 1857, the Court’s infamous “self-inflicted wound,” are chilling. In Dred Scott, a politicized court in an opinion by Chief Justice Roger Taney ruled that African Americans were not citizens under the Constitution and therefore had no rights that a white man need respect, or that the federal government could protect. The immoral and lawless decision contributed directly to the political divisions that culminated in the Civil War. As with Alito’s draft, the Dred Scott decision was leaked ahead of time. As with Alito’s opinion, it was preceded by a disingenuous campaign to urge citizens to respect the decisions of the court as grounded in law, not politics. In Dred Scott, Taney relied on
a rigid standard of interpretation that ignored precedent and opinion. He argued that Black people could not be American citizens because at the time of the founding they were considered “beings of an inferior order ... and so far inferior, that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect, and that the negro might justly and lawfully be reduced to slavery for his benefit.” In Dobbs, Alito similarly adopts a rigid standard, arguing that the Constitution contains no words about abortion and that abortion was widely outlawed at the time of the founding. Of course, at the founding, women were not citizens, didn’t have the right to vote, and were treated largely as property of their husbands. The Dred Scott decision left the question of slavery not to the national majority which sought to outlaw it in western lands, but to state legislatures that reserved voting to white men. Alito’s decision reverses a settled national precedent, supported by the majority, and leaves the question to state legislatures, most of which remain dominated by white men. In Dred Scott, Taney reviewed the laws of the original American states, distorting and ignoring the actual history to make his case. Similarly, Alito reviews the laws of the states, and distorts and ignores the actual history to bolster his opinion.
Justice Alito Taney believed that the decision would help temper the growing controversy over slavery that was dividing the nation. Similarly, Alito suggests that overturning Roe will help reduce the divisions growing around the rights of women. Both were disastrously deluded. Perhaps the greatest difference between Taney’s opinion in Dred Scott and Alito’s opinion in Dobbs is that Alito’s opinion is even more lawless and more brazen. He is overturning a precedent of 50 years - a precedent that at least three of the judges making up the majority agreed was “settled law” when they testified under oath in their confirmation hearings. The Taney decision was directed at slavery. Alito’s decision not only rolls back women’s right to control their

arris County Attorney Christian D. bodies, it also calls into question the right to privacy, and the precedents that have protected the right to marry whomever you choose, to use contraception, to have privacy in your home, to not be discriminated against on the basis of sexual preference and more. After the Dred Scott decision, the great Black abolitionist Frederick Douglass denounced Taney’s reasoning as contrary to both the Constitution and the vision of the Founders. He argued the decision would not stand: “I have no fear that the National Conscience will be put to sleep by such an open, glaring and scandalous tissue of lies.” Similarly, Alito’s opinion - assuming it becomes the decision of the court - will spark fierce political battles over basic rights in the states, the Congress, the courts and on the streets. But it too will not stand as the law of the land but be remembered only as a mark of ignominy on an illegitimate court. We are not calling people to quietness, that is the absence of noise. s we inch closer to the summer months, the battle to legalize marijuana in more states this year is truly heating up. Not only is it probable that there will be more federal hearings on marijuana-related legislation, but states across this country will be voting on legalization and medical marijuana ballot measures this fall. Maryland has already approved a legalization ballot measure that will be before state voters in November, and it is very likely that states such as South Dakota, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Arkansas may be joining them. We have a real opportunity to bring cannabis freedom to millions more Americans this year, but only if we have the resources, we need to win the hearts and minds of voters and lawmakers alike. To that end, we need to ramp up our educational outreach and prepare for strong get-out-the-vote campaigns. We
know that when we take our message to the public, we win. We just need the necessary resources to adequately fund that outreach. NORML is the only truly grassroots pro-legalization organization that works only to represent cannabis consumers, not special interests. That’s why we come to you so often for your support. It is thanks to thousands of supporters, just like you, chipping in $20 or $50 at a time that we have been able to stay true to that mission and successfully move the needle and change our draconic marijuana laws. SPORTS: Texans Rookies Begin Second Phase To Becoming Part Of The Process By Brian Barefield, Sports Editor – StyleMagazine.com

s the Houston Texans prepare for rookie minicamp this weekend, the only thing the fans and the media will get to see are the rookies in their projected numbers for the season doing walk-throughs and some small drills. For some, that will be a waste of time, but for the optimistic, enthusiastic Texans fan, it means that help is on the way. General manager Nick Caserio and head coach Lovie Smith had what most draft experts consider one of the best drafts in franchise history, filling the holes on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. They addressed the needs, hopefully providing a better ending than the 4-13 season they experienced in 2021. “Well, it’s not going to be a training camp practice or anything like that,” said coach Smith Monday before the Texans’ annual golf charity event. “First, it’s orientation of how we do

As much as anything, what we’re trying to get accomplished with our minicamp is to let them know how we do things, drills, and just daily schedule. It’s more of that for them to be able to blend in Monday with our veterans. But you have to get that first day on the football field in, so we’ll get
that, see where they are.” When he spoke to the media, Caserio echoed his head coach’s sentiments about rookie expectations. “I think to try and determine what role a rookie is going to play when they walk in the building is ridiculous because they haven’t been here,” said Caserio. “We just have to start from
