LOCAL: TDECU LAUNCHES CARES FOUNDATION TO STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY TIES AND BOOST LOCAL SUPPORT IN HOUSTON

Texas Dow Employees Credit Union (TDECU) , a beacon of community involvement and support in Houston, has further solidified its commitment to local development through the creation of the TDECU Cares Foundation . Spearheaded by TDECU's dynamic leadership team, including Sheiludis Moyett, the Foundation's president and TDECU’s senior vice president and chief digital and marketing officer, the nonprofit is setting ambitious goals to amplify its positive impact on the community.

Under the guidance of TDECU President and CEO Isaac Johnson and

supported by other key figures such as Gulf Coast Market President Joshua Brian and Montgomery County Market President Will Warren, the foundation has already begun making significant strides. Their efforts were marked by a successful fraud prevention seminar in Lake Jackson and a generous $10,000 donation to Brazosport College’s on-campus food pantry, Gator Mart, highlighting their focus on tangible support for local needs.

"This is the tip of the iceberg," Moyett expressed with enthusiasm about the foundation’s future initiatives, indicating a series of planned actions designed to extend the foundation's reach and effectiveness across Houston and beyond.

Ranked as the number one credit union in the Houston area by the Houston Business Journal for 2023, with over $4.74 billion in local assets, TDECU continues to innovate not only

in financial services but also in community engagement. The establishment of the TDECU Cares Foundation is a testament to their ongoing dedication to "build a brighter future for our community," as Joshua Brian stated during the launch.

As TDECU expands its operations, the integration of the foundation into its core activities illustrates a deepening commitment to community outreach, which Sheiludis Moyett describes as increasingly significant within the organization. With this new chapter, TDECU not only aims to maintain its market leadership but also to enrich the lives of its members and the broader community, promising a more impactful presence in the Houston area.

COMMENTARY FORCING POLLUTERS TO CLEAN UP THEIR MESS MEANS NEW HOPE FOR COMMUNITIES

In Waukegan, Illinois, about 40 miles north of Chicago, Dulce Ortiz is celebrating with her children.

Ortiz is a cofounder of the local environmental justice organization Clean Power Lake County. She has been organizing for years to get coal ash waste cleaned up from the site of the retired coal power plant in her town.

The historic suite of power plant pollution standards announced last week by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes a rule that will finally force power plant owners to clean up their coal ash pollution.

This is good news for Dulce Ortiz’s family and countless others, including the 30 million people who get their drinking water from the Great Lakes. Coal ash contains toxic pollutants like mercury, arsenic, and cancer-causing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that leach into groundwater. And there are more than 100 coal ash waste sites along the shores of the Great Lakes. That includes legacy sites from retired plants like the one in Waukegan, which left two coal ash ponds and another coal ash deposit.

Ortiz says, “My vision for my family and my community is a lakefront where I can take my children swimming in the waters of Lake Michigan without worrying about toxic pollution; where we can go fishing without worrying about mercury and PCB contamination of the fish we catch; where I can go running along the shores of Lake Michigan without worrying about air pollution triggering my asthma. I want to see a clean energy future for Waukegan and all communities that have borne the burden of coal and industrial plant pollution for decades.”

Waukegan has borne a particularly heavy burden. The predominantly Black and brown residents share their town with five of Illinois’ 11 Superfund hazardous waste sites. That does not include the coal ash deposits.

Toxic waste from coal and industrial plants has been a plague for many

American communities like Waukegan. One of my mentors, a legendary community organizer in Pittsburgh, once showed me an uncovered coal ash pit there. I asked him where all that waste went when there was a heavy rain. I still remember his response: “nowhere good.”

In addition to addressing coal ash, the new EPA rules also include vital new standards for carbon and other toxic pollutants pumped into our air and water by coal- and gas-burning power plants. The impact of these rules in cutting carbon dioxide (CO2) from power plants – one of the top greenhouse gas contributors – will be to accelerate the decline of carbon emissions and our transition to clean energy. And, of course, these pollution standards mark a tremendous stride for public health that will save lives and prevent chronic illnesses.

The rules will remove economic barriers for some America’s communities that need it the most – in particular, the coal ash rule, as Ortiz points out:

“Allowing companies to pollute our communities without forcing them to clean up deters future investments in those same communities. We have aspirational plans in Waukegan for lakefront revitalization that have not been able to get off the ground due to the lingering contamination. This is devastating for communities like Waukegan that desperately need new investments and economic renewal.”

The new suite of EPA rules is a critical moment in the fight for a clean energy future and the result of years of advocacy. These common-sense safeguards mark the beginning of our next chapter in the fight to transition to a 100 percent clean energy economy. And, remarkably, they are the latest in a string of groundbreaking actions by the Biden-Harris administration announced throughout April, which is Earth Month. The Bureau of Land Management issued a new federal rule making conservation a priority on our majestic public lands. The

Department of the Interior announced new protections for 13 million acres of land in the Western Arctica from oil drilling. That is just to name a couple. What a way to celebrate Earth Month!

Today, Dulce Ortiz’s vision for her family and her community is closer to reality because of the EPA’s new power sector rules. And that is a vision that so many of us share for our own families, our own kids, and our own communities. We all deserve a cleaner, healthier future. And the Biden-Harris administration just delivered in a way that is going to help get us there faster.

FPOLITICAL: FORT BEND ELECTS - A SNAPSHOT OF EARLY VOTING AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

ort Bend County, renowned for its ethnically diverse and balanced demographic, has seen an enthusiastic voter turnout in early voting ahead of the Saturday, May 4th elections, where key positions in city council, school board, utility board, and central appraisal board will be decided. A notable 7,135 voters made their way to the polls in the first week alone, setting a promising precedent for civic participation.

In Missouri City, which shifted its election schedule to November aligning with major national and state elections, voters will soon decide whether to re-elect Council Members Monica Riley, Jeffrey Boney, Anthony Maroulis, and Floyd Emery. These elections coincide with pivotal races including those for President, U.S. Senate, Congress, and various contested county seats.

Sugar Land shows a mixed scene of competition and continuity. Council Members Naushad Kermally, Stewart Jacobson, and Carol McCutcheon are running unopposed, ensuring stability in their roles. However, the race for District 1 is heating up as incumbent Suzanne Whatley faces challenger Muzzafar Vohra Whatley – a longtime resident, and active community member – narrowly secured her

previous term by just five votes in 2021. Her dedication to the community is evident as she draws on her vast experience and the trust of her neighbors to propel Sugar Land towards a flourishing future.

Whatley’s involvement extends beyond her council duties; she is also a proactive member of the Planning and Zoning Commission, Sugar Land Rotary Club, Sugar Land Exchange, and the Fort Bend

Chamber of Commerce. Her district has shown strong voter engagement, with early voting numbers at the Sugar Land Library doubling those of other locations, which could significantly influence the outcomes of the FBISD races.

Fort Bend ISD's Leadership Stakes are High amid challenges such as management issues, fluctuating test scores, and financial oversight. The FBISD races

have drawn diverse candidates including Adam Schoof, a police officer, Riz Quadari , a former principal, Manisha Gandhi , a business builder and single mother, and Asher Baptiste, an educator. Position 6 sees Angel Hicks, a teacher; Ferrel Bonner, a businessman and military veteran; controversial incumbent Kristen Malone; and Kristin Tassin, an attorney and advocate for special education.

These races are crucial, reflecting the community’s vested interest in shaping a resilient educational future. As Fort Bend continues to demonstrate its commitment to vibrant civic engagement, the outcome of these elections will undoubtedly influence the direction of the community’s development and governance.

Fort Bend's early voting turnout exemplifies its residents' dedication to shaping their community’s governance, reflecting the dynamic civic spirit that defines this unique region. As election day approaches, all eyes are on Fort Bend as it continues to set an example of proactive community participation.

As the Houston Style Magazine community comes together to commemorate the distinguished life and contributions of the Honorable Donald M. Payne Jr., we gather in unity and remembrance for a pillar of public service and a beacon of compassion in our nation, the heartache and reverence felt within the community are echoed in the words of Congressman Al Green. Speaking on the legacy of his esteemed colleague, Congressman Green remarked, "I am deeply saddened by the loss of the Honorable Rep. Donald M. Payne Jr. from New Jersey. A public servant par excellence who championed the causes of all who suffered injustice, especially those among the least, the last, and the lost. He was a man of principle with integrity, with a flair and style of his own. To meet him just once would leave one with an indelible memory. He was a dedicated public servant, and it was a splendiferous honor to serve with him. My condolences go out to his family during this time of bereavement. May he rest in peace."

This dedication will be honored posthumously as he becomes the third dignitary to lie in state at the historic Essex County Courthouse, a civic cathedral where his father was similarly honored in 2012, followed by Lt. Gov. Sheila Y. Oliver. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has decreed that both U.S. and New Jersey flags will solemnly wave at half-staff in tribute on May 1 and May 2, the days of

remembrance and celebration of Congressman Payne's life and enduring impact.

Congressman Payne’s illustrious career, shaped by an unrelenting commitment to serve and uplift, has indeed left an indelible imprint on all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him. His flair and style, unmatched in the halls of Congress, mirrored the vibrancy and resilience of the city of Newark that he so passionately represented.

As flags are lowered to half-staff, we not only mourn the loss of a great man but also celebrate the profound impact of

his service. The procession on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Newark's Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, will gather loved ones, dignitaries, and the public to honor a life dedicated to the pinnacle of public service. With Congressman Al Green and other notables in attendance, the service will undoubtedly reflect the deep respect and admiration garnered by Congressman Payne.

The Houston Style Magazine stands with Congressman Green in extending heartfelt condolences to the Payne family, encouraging our readership to join

in remembrance and to support the causes Congressman Payne championed by contributing to the Donald M. Payne Sr. Global Foundation. As we reflect on his life and work, we are reminded of the impact one individual can have on the tapestry of humanity. Rest in peace, Congressman Donald M. Payne Jr., a true beacon of integrity and service.
