Erica Lee Carter, the dedicated and inspiring daughter of the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, was officially sworn in today in Washington, D.C., to serve the remainder of her mother’s term in Texas’s 18th Congressional District. This moment marks a powerful continuation of service, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to justice, a legacy that Erica’s mother championed throughout her lifetime.
Erica, who recently won a special election to fulfill her mother's term, steps into this role with both reverence and resolve. “I am honored to finish for you and in the memory of my mother, the late great Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee,” she stated. “I am ready to stand up and work for you.” Her appointment bridges the gap between her mother’s impactful tenure and the incoming leadership of former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who will take office in January.
A Legacy of Service with a Vision for the Future
Commissioner Rodney Ellis, a longtime mentor and colleague of Erica’s, spoke highly of her commitment to the community, saying, "Today, as Erica Lee Carter steps into her mother’s role, we’re witnessing more than a transition; we’re witnessing the endurance of a powerful legacy." Ellis added, “Sheila would be so proud, and so are we. The people of Congressional District 18 are in good hands.”
Erica’s journey has been shaped by her mother’s tireless advocacy and her own distinguished career. From her early days as a first-grade teacher to her work in public policy, Erica has proven herself to be a formidable force for change. Her experience with the Harris County Department of Education and her role as a policy leader in Commissioner Ellis’s office underscore her dedication to creating meaningful impact in the community.

As she embarks on her new journey in Congress, Erica will focus on championing healthcare access, economic development, and educational equity for the people of Houston. "My mother taught me to never give up on the fight for justice and equity," she shared. "I intend to carry her torch forward with the same passion and dedication."
Erica’s dedication to criminal justice reform, particularly in the areas of bail reform and juvenile justice, echoes her mother’s legacy. She has pledged to address the epidemic of mass incarceration and to work tirelessly on behalf of families impacted by the justice system. As Erica explains,

Recognizing the importance of economic opportunity for all, she has pledged to expand job training programs that provide a path to well-paying jobs for young people and the unemployed. "Creating pathways to prosperity is a top priority," she said. "Our community deserves access to good-paying jobs that allow families to thrive."
Broad Support From Community Leaders
Erica’s vision for the 18th Congressional District has garnered support from a broad coalition of local leaders and organizations. She has received endorsements from groups like the Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation, Moms Demand Action, and the Houston Federation of Teachers. Community leaders, including Texas State Representatives and former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, have rallied behind Erica, recognizing her commitment to her mother’s legacy and her unwavering dedication to public service.
In a heartening show of unity, Texans from all walks of life gathered in downtown Houston this Veterans Day, putting aside political differences to honor the men and women who have bravely served in America’s Armed Forces. Following one of the most heated elections in recent history, this day of remembrance provided a much-needed moment of togetherness and gratitude for those who have committed themselves to protecting the freedoms we cherish.
The event featured inspiring words from Admiral Michelle Howard a history-making figure in the U.S. Navy. As the first African American woman to command a Navy ship and the first woman to earn the ranks of two-, three-, and four-star Admiral Howard’s presence was a powerful reminder of resilience and progress. Her message was simple yet profound: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
She emphasized how, in uniform, divisions of color, gender, and background fade away, creating a unity that strengthens the nation. “Wearing the uniform of the United States is the great equalizer,” she said, capturing the essence of her decades-long service.

"This is about justice for our communities, about ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to thrive."
Building a Stronger HoustonThrough Education and Job Training
A former School Board Trustee, Erica is committed to securing increased federal funding for education and ensuring that these funds support essential programs like Head Start. She plans to advocate for lower student loan interest rates and policies that allow students to graduate without debt.

In addition to her focus on education, Erica is passionate about job creation

“Being an American Veteran, committed to preserving the Constitution of the United States, is all I ever wanted to do,” Howard shared with the audience.
ard also reminded attendees of Texas’s deep military roots. With over 300,000 veterans, Texas has contributed significantly to America’s defense, producing both men and women who have served with honor. “Texans have always stood at the forefront, from the Alamo to today’s frontlines,” she said. She went
on to highlight the overlooked contributions of women and minorities throughout U.S. military history, from Harriet Tubman’s work as an Army scout to the women who disguised themselves as men to serve during critical times. Her journey to the top ranks of the Navy wasn’t an easy one. She recalled her dream of serving in combat, a goal she set at the age of 12. At the time, it was illegal for women to serve in combat roles. But, as Howard shared, her determination only grew. “I told my mom I was not going to give up
fighting for my right to fight for America,” she said. The landmark 1974 decision by President Gerald Ford to allow women into military academies paved the way for her groundbreaking career.
Joining her in honoring veterans was Vice Admiral James Crawford, the recently appointed President of Texas Southern University. Crawford, reflecting on the power of service, said, “The most significant gift one can ever receive, or give, is the gift of service.” His words resonated deeply, underscoring the pride and gratitude felt throughout the gathering.
Houston Style Magazine readers, in a time of political division, this Veterans Day served as a poignant reminder of the unifying power of shared service and sacrifice. Texans stood together, demonstrating that, no matter the political climate, honoring those who protect our freedoms is a cause that transcends differences. And as Admiral Howard so eloquently put it, going “far” as a nation means going together.

In a groundbreaking moment of progress, resilience, and representation, the U.S. Senate has, for the first time in history, welcomed two Black women to serve simultaneously. This milestone, achieved in the November 2024 elections, not only doubles the total number of Black women who have ever held Senate seats from two to four, but it also marks a new era of inclusion within one of the nation’s most exclusive political chambers.
In 2024, we celebrate the victories of Lisa Blunt Rochester from Delaware and Angela Alsobrooks from Maryland each bringing a wealth of experience, passion, and a commitment to championing the voices of their communities. These trailblazers join a short but remarkable list of Black women who have broken barriers in the Senate, following in the footsteps of former Senators Carol Moseley Braun and Kamala Harris, as well as Laphonza Butler who was appointed to complete the term of the late Senator Dianne Feinstein in 2023.
Blunt Rochester, known for her tenure as Delaware’s sole U.S. House representative since 2017, made history as the state’s first African American and woman elected to Congress. Her path to the Senate was smooth and steady, reflecting her deep-rooted connection with Delaware’s electorate. With little opposition, she secured her seat, demonstrating the powerful impact of a seasoned representative who understands the pulse of her state.
On the other hand, Angela Alsobrooks faced a fierce battle against Repub-

lican Larry Hogan, a well-known former governor of Maryland with deep-rooted support. Hogan’s high-profile campaign, with robust ad spending and significant backing from GOP allies, aimed to shift this traditionally Democratic seat. However, Alsobrooks’s tenacity, clear vision, and unyielding dedication to the people of Maryland ultimately brought her to victory. Her win against formidable odds resonates as a testament to her grit and the trust her constituents place in her.
Both senators drew on their backgrounds and values to build genuine connections with their supporters. Much like Vice President Kamala Harris did during her recent presidential campaign, Blunt Rochester and Alsobrooks emphasized their policy stances, shared struggles, and dedication to all Americans rather than focusing solely on the historical significance of their positions. This approach not only showcased the richness of their experiences but also reinforced
color. Yet, their success is a reminder that change is not only possible—it’s already here. Their achievements represent hope, progress, and the realization of dreams that seemed distant for far too long.
A New Chapter for American Politics
their commitment to fostering unity, progress, and community upliftment for every individual, regardless of background.
Building On a Legacy of Firsts
As they step into their Senate roles, Blunt Rochester and Alsobrooks are conscious of the legacy they’re building upon—a legacy that began with Senator Carol Moseley Braun, who shattered the glass ceiling in 1992 as the first Black woman to join the Senate. After her came Kamala Harris, who served California before becoming the first woman of color to hold the vice presidency. Most recently, Laphonza Butler was appointed in 2023, further diversifying the Senate with her unique voice and perspective.
The collective journeys of Blunt Rochester and Alsobrooks, like those who came before them, underscore the resilience and fortitude required to succeed in a space that has historically excluded women of
For many, this moment is not just symbolic but transformative, showing young Black women and girls across the nation that they too can hold the highest offices and impact the policies that shape our lives. Blunt Rochester and Alsobrooks bring perspectives informed by a deep understanding of the issues affecting Black communities and are determined to serve with purpose, dedication, and authenticity.
Their simultaneous presence in the Senate marks a new chapter in American politics, where diversity isn’t just an ideal but a lived reality. As our nation watches, the contributions of these two pioneering women will undoubtedly inspire future generations and reinforce the notion that when voices from all walks of life come together, we create a more inclusive and representative democracy.
Houston Style Magazine readers, as these remarkable women assume their positions, they embody not only the progress we’ve achieved but also the work that remains. They stand as powerful reminders of our nation’s commitment to moving forward, breaking barriers, and continuing the fight for a more inclusive future. Blunt Rochester and Alsobrooks aren’t just making history; they’re shaping it for the better. www.StyleMagazine.com

Those are just a few of the benefits working people and communities across this country are reaping from the transition from fossil fuels to a clean energy economy. Sure, it is also about saving the planet – which most of us can agree is a good thing. But the economic and health benefits for millions of American families are very real as well.
Donald Trump and his Project 2025 agenda have threatened to upend the clean energy transition and move us backwards. He has shown us he is more interested in lining the pockets of fossil fuel oligarchs than helping everyday Americans.
But we will not go backwards. That is due in part to market forces that are not going anywhere. And it is due to the resistance that strong leaders and a strong movement for justice will wage in defense of the American people.
In Illinois, more than 130,000 people are now employed in clean energy jobs. In 2023, clean energy jobs grew eight times faster than the rest of the state’s economy and clean vehicles are now the fastest grow-
ing sector in the state. California has more than 545,000 people employed in clean energy.
Those two states come to mind not only because they are both in the top five states for clean energy jobs, but because the governors of both those states are already pledging to resist Trump’s attacks on their progress and the wellbeing of their people. But the governors of every state should be as protective of their constituents. Two other top five states for clean energy jobs are Texas (second only to California with about 262,000) and Florida (with about 172,000).
licans already wrote to Speaker Mike Johnson back in August asking him to leave the IRA’s clean energy tax credits in place because of how they are helping their districts.

percent of the vote in 2020. There, the IRA has allowed the solar panel manufacturer Qcells to build solar panel plants and the capacity to house entire supply chain for their panels locally. That means thousands of good jobs as well as hope for the US competing with China in the global solar market – 80 percent of which China currently dominates.
In addition to good jobs and the rebirth of American manufacturing, another major real-life benefit of the clean energy transition for American families is improved health outcomes.
And maybe the far-right governors of those states will stand up against potential efforts to roll back clean energy investments like those found in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). After all, 18 US House Repub -
Nationally, the Department of Energy found clean energy jobs to be growing at more than twice the rate of US employment overall. A lot of these jobs are in deep red states and districts, because that is where a lot of the IRA investments are flowing. One of the greatest stories of how the clean energy economy is reinvigorating communities and reshoring supply chains – and the jobs they create – comes from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s district, where Trump received 75

jobs. Better jobs. Lower energy prices. Cleaner water. Cleaner air. Fewer asthma attacks. Fewer heart attacks.
In a chilling reminder of America's painful legacy of slavery and racism, Black Americans across the country—from students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to working professionals—are receiving racist text messages that reference “picking cotton” and “slave catchers.” The messages have triggered outrage, heartbreak, and fear among recipients and drawn condemnation from leaders and authorities across more than 20 states.
This coordinated barrage of hateful rhetoric didn’t arrive out of nowhere. In the heated climate following the presidential election, white nationalist groups and racists seem emboldened. As NAACP President Derrick Johnson pointed out, this hatred is “unfolding before our eyes” in ways that we thought we had moved past.
Imagine being a college student—a young person with dreams, friends, and a bright future ahead—suddenly receiving a message telling you to “pick cotton at the nearest plantation.” For students at institutions like Hampton, Fisk, and Claflin Universities, this racist harassment isn’t just cruel—it’s terrifying. Parents, professors, and students alike are grappling with this shadow of hatred, rallying to support one another and ensure safety. The University of Alabama recently saw students mapping
out safe routes and walking in groups after similar messages targeted their Black student body.
TextNow, the service platform used to send these anonymous texts, has taken steps to disable the accounts responsible, calling the attack “widespread and coordinated.” However, the anonymity tools available to online harassers mean that law enforcement agencies are fighting an uphill battle to identify the individuals responsible.
From New York to California, attorneys general on both sides of the political
aisle are condemning the messages. In Louisiana, Attorney General Liz Murrill, who also received one of these vile messages, expressed her commitment to investigating this assault on our communities. New York’s Attorney General Letitia James called the messages “disgusting and unacceptable,” especially given the personal information often included.
The messages’ content goes beyond hate speech—they are crafted to inflict psychological harm. As Talaya Jones, a Black resident of New Jersey, noted, this
isn’t just about an ugly word or a backward opinion; it’s about making individuals, especially young people, feel unsafe and degraded. It’s a clear attempt to revive a history that millions have fought to overcome. Even as the Federal Communications Commission and FBI ramp up their efforts to track down the culprits, the impact on victims has been profound. For Black and brown communities, these messages serve as an ugly reminder of our nation’s failure to fully eradicate the stains of its past. In today’s America, where hate can be sent with the click of a button and an anonymous number, the need for unity and resilience has never been greater. This despicable act has left its mark on those targeted, yes—but it has also united communities, reigniting the fight against racial hatred. At Houston Style Magazine, we stand with all those affected. This attempt to silence and intimidate only strengthens our resolve to report, support, and uplift every member of our community. Racism may still rear its ugly head, but together, we push back—because hate will not win.

Yale University Launches Course on Beyoncé's Legacy
By Francis Page, Jr.
In a move that bridges pop culture with academia, Yale University in the Spring Semester of 2025 will offer a course on Beyoncé's legacy, underscoring her profound impact on music, social justice, and Black intellectual thought. With a record-breaking 99 Grammy nominations, the Houston-born superstar continues to inspire global audiences—not just through her music, but by embodying the spirit of resilience and empowerment.
The one-credit class, titled "Beyoncé Makes History: Black Radical Tradition, Culture, Theory & Politics Through Music," dives deep into Beyoncé's discography, particularly from her 2013 self-titled album to her latest release, "Cowboy Carter." According to Professor Daphne Brooks, who will lead the course, Beyoncé's work serves as a "portal" for students to explore the rich legacy of Black intellectuals like Frederick Douglass and Toni Morrison.
“We’re going to be taking seriously the ways in which the critical work of some of our greatest thinkers resonates with Beyoncé’s music,” Professor Brooks explained. She praised Beyoncé for "spectacularly elevating awareness of and engagement with grassroots social and political ideologies," especially through movements like Black Lives Matter and feminist commentary.
This isn’t the first time universities have tapped into pop icons for cultural insight—recently, Taylor Swift’s lyrics have been used in law courses. Yet, Professor Brooks sees Beyoncé in a league of her own. “Can you think of another pop musician who’s invited an array of grassroots activists to participate in these longform multimedia projects?” she asked. "Beyoncé’s music is an archive of historical memory, woven with themes of race, gender, and the African-American experience."
For those lucky enough to enroll, don’t expect a surprise guest appearance by Queen Bey herself. Professor Brooks jokingly noted, “If she were on tour, I would definitely try to take the class to see her!”

Yale’s decision to honor Beyoncé in this way speaks volumes about her enduring influence. With her roots in Houston and her reach extending worldwide, Beyoncé remains a true icon—an artist who uses her platform not only to entertain but to inspire and educate. Her legacy is not just in her hits; it’s in her role as a cultural ambassador, making history in the classroom as much as on stage.

The album also brings along an impressive collaboration with country veteran Linda Martell and Nigerian-American artist Shaboozey on the track “SPAGHETTI.” Not only did this collaboration earn Martell her first Grammy nod at age 83, but it also solidified Cowboy Carter as a historic moment in the music industry—melding traditional

Filling a Critical Gap in Autism Support
For many young adults with autism, the transition out of the education system can feel like stepping into a void. Services that were readily available suddenly disappear, leaving families scrambling to find meaningful programs for continued growth and independence. Andreza Carleo, driven by her son Alex’s journey, recognized this pressing need and saw an opportunity for change.
“When Alex turned 21, he aged out of school,” Carleo explains. “There were so few options for him to continue developing his skills and working toward his goals. The

HCC OTA program, speaks passionately about the initiative’s dual impact: “Our students are gaining invaluable experience, applying what they've learned in real-world settings. At the same time, they’re providing an essential service to individuals who may not otherwise have access to structured, therapeutic development after high school.”
An Alliance Fueled by Community Ties
The program came to life through the efforts of community leaders, including registered nurse Gwin Young, who specializes in working with young adults with autism. As a graduate of HCC herself, Young knew that the OTA program offered autism training and saw a chance to connect it with Autism Moms of Houston.
Real-World Learning with Heart HCC students, like second-year OTA student Kayli Graham, are diving into this program with enthusiasm, learning to tailor their approach to the specific needs of an adult population. “Working with adults over 21 was a new experience for me,” Graham shares. “I had to adapt my activities, keeping them age-appropriate but still engaging. It was inspiring to see their enthusiasm and capability.”
The hands-on involvement challenges students to grow in ways textbooks alone cannot provide. Through their work, they’re also supporting the families, offering strategies and resources to help parents envision a future for their children that’s filled with possibilities.
Strengthening Houston’s Community Fabric Houston Style Magazine readers, at its core, Alex’s Autism Alliance isn’t just a program; it’s a beacon of hope.

General Motors (GM) is sparking a new wave of excitement in the electric vehicle (EV) market with the reintroduction of the beloved Chevrolet Bolt EV. This shift in GM’s strategy underscores the auto giant’s commitment to accessibility, efficiency, and innovation—values that resonate with Houston’s eco-conscious and forward-thinking community.
Next-Gen Chevy Bolt EV: A New Era for Electric Driving
The 2025 Chevrolet Bolt EV is back on the production line, promising a fresh look, enhanced technology, and, most importantly, GM’s revolutionary Ultium battery platform. For the uninitiated, Ultium tech is the backbone of GM’s next-gen EVs, offering longer range, faster charging, and improved battery efficiency.
With these upgrades, the Bolt isn’t just a car—it’s a game-changer for anyone ready to make the switch from gasoline to electric.
For years, the Bolt EV has been a standout choice for environmentally conscious drivers looking for an affordable, reliable, and American-made EV. With its anticipated pricing in the $30,000 range, it remains one of the most cost-effective ways to embrace the EV lifestyle. The next-gen Bolt EV promises to uphold the values that made it a favorite, from its accessible price tag to its impressive mileage range.
New Features, Same Affordability
The Bolt EV’s resurgence comes with a boost in power, offering advanced Ultium batter-

ies and fast-charging capabilities. Equipped with a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, a nod to the growing Tesla-compatible infrastructure, the new Bolt is set to reach 80% charge in just 30 minutes. That’s half the time it took its predecessor—a significant improvement for Houstonians on the go.
For those who need a bit more room, the Chevy Bolt EUV, a slightly larger cousin to the Bolt EV, is also making a comeback. With additional passenger and cargo space, it’s perfect for families or anyone needing that extra flexibility without sacrificing the eco-friendly benefits.
Why the Bolt Matters to Houston
The Bolt’s comeback couldn’t be more timely. As Houston, and indeed the world, grapples with climate change, clean energy options like the Bolt empower individuals to make a difference. An accessible, American-made EV like the Bolt is more than a car; it’s a statement. It’s a call for Houstonians to embrace greener options, helping reduce emissions and set a precedent for sustainable urban mobility.
The End of the Road for the Cadillac XT4 and Chevy Malibu: A New Beginning for EVs
GM’s decision to discontinue the Cadillac XT4 and the Chevy Malibu gas sedan marks a clear shift in focus. The Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas, once home to these models, will now pivot to producing the next-gen Bolt EV, cementing GM’s all-in approach to an electric future. While the XT4 found a steady fanbase
and consistent sales, the transition away from fossil fuels has never been more crucial.
By retiring these models, GM is making room for the Bolt’s electric future—an inspiring choice that aligns with Houston Style Magazine’s mission to inform and inspire our readers toward a more sustainable tomorrow.
Comparing the Competition
As the Bolt reenters the market, it faces strong contenders like the 2025 Volvo EX30 and the Hyundai Kona Electric. However, with the Bolt’s budget-friendly positioning and superior range, GM’s iconic EV is set to hold its ground.
Unlike other entry-level EVs like the Nissan Leaf or the Mini Cooper SE, which offer limited range, the Bolt’s estimated 275 miles per charge make
it a top choice for daily commutes and long drives alike.
Looking Ahead: Houston and the Bolt’s EV Revolution
The Bolt’s resurgence isn’t just about a car; it’s about Houston’s future. Imagine a city where clean, quiet electric cars dominate the roads, charging stations are as common as gas pumps, and each vehicle is a commitment to a cleaner, greener planet. The Bolt EV, now better than ever, invites all Houstonians to be part of this vision.
Houston Style Magazine readers, in a city proud of its innovation and resilience, the Chevy Bolt EV embodies the best of both.
