COMMENTARY

Georgians Will Have A Clear Choice On Jan 5th By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

O

n January 5, Georgia will hold a run-off election for both of its Senate seats. The races capture national attention because control of the Senate is at stake. If the two Democratic challengers, Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock. both win, the Senate will be effectively split 50-50, with Vice President Kamala Harris breaking the tie. If one or both lose, Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell will retain his ability to obstruct the incoming president. The races will be determined by whether Georgia’s voters choose to embrace and build a New South coalition or revert to the Old South. Georgia has been changing ever since the Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965. The civil rights movement was anchored in Georgia, led by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, the pastor at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Julian Bond and John Lewis, historic leaders of that movement, also came from Atlanta. After the civil rights movement transformed our laws, Georgia began to change. Major businesses like CNN located in Atlanta, the city “too busy to hate.” Professional football and baseball teams could thrive, once their teams were integrated. Blacks and whites played together in college sports like football, with fans divided by the color of the jerseys, not the color of the players’ skin. In recent years, Georgia has grown in population, in diversity and in sophistication. Blacks, Latinos and Asians grew in number. The college educated flocked to the Atlanta suburbs. This year, for the first time since 1992, a Democrat, Joe Biden, won the state in the presidential campaign, by a margin of less than 15,000 votes. Biden’s victory was a fusion

4

victory. African American registration soared, in significant part due to the work of Stacy Abrams who most thought lost the 2018 governor’s race only because of brazen voter suppression. The young, single women, the college educated, Latinos all joined in Biden’s winning coalition. They had to brave long lines and overcome Georgia’s notorious efforts to suppress their votes. Over 4.9 million voted, a new record, with 4 million voting early. Now the choice facing Georgia is stark: between the sitting Republican senators peddling racial fears and yesterday and the Democratic challengers representing hope and tomorrow. Both Republican senators, David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, are multimillionaires. (Loeffler is the wealthiest politician in Washington.) Both were caught moving large stock transactions in the wake of secret briefings on the pandemic. Both support Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Both oppose expanding Medicaid. Loeffler described herself in her ads as “to the right of Attila the Hun.” She touted her endorsement by a Q-Anon believer running for the Congress. She was denounced as a “greedy insider” seeking to “profit off the pandemic” by her Republican opponent in the primaries. Loeffler is challenged by Reverend Raphael Warnock, the distinguished pastor at Dr. King’s famed Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. He favors common sense in dealing with the pandemic, and bold action to put people back to work. He calls for defending the Affordable Care Act and its protections of pre-existing conditions and seeks to add a public option that will help lower prices and provide real choices. He’d vote to raise the minimum wage, to pass

November 19 – November 25, 2020

JON OSSOFF – Democratic Georgia Senate Challenger the rescue plan vital to workers in the pandemic, and to invest in rebuilding America. Millions will be poured into these two run-offs. Neither Perdue nor Loeffler is popular, so both will feature negative ads designed to drive up doubts about their opponents. Loeffler has already sunk a million dollars into two attack ads labeling Warnock as “anti-American”and part of the “radical left.” Perdue has charged his opponent, Jon Ossoff, with everything from being a socialist to being a pawn of the Chinese communists. They are following the playbook of Donald Trump: sow fear, feed racial divisions, and distract workers from the reality that they and the Republicans in the Senate stand in the way of making this economy work for working people. Or as Rev. Warnock summarized, “If you don’t really have an agenda for working families, I guess

www.StyleMagazine.com

you have to distract working families.” Despite all the mud, Georgians will have a clear choice. Will they respond to those sowing fear or those raising hopes? Will they side with those seeking to divide us or those seeking to bring us together? Will they support those who would revert back to the Old South or those who would continue its progress into the New South? The vote on January 5 will tell us much about Georgia, about the New South, and about America’s ability to deal with the crises we face. Write to the Rev. President-Elect Biden Could Face A Student Loan Mess If Trump Allows Pandemic Relief To Expire

S

By Katie Lobosco, www.CNN.Com – www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

tudent loan borrowers haven’t had to make payments since March -but that piece of federal pandemic relief is set to expire on December 31, unless President Donald Trump or Congress act to extend it. If neither push the deadline back, millions of student loan payments will come due a couple of weeks before President-elect Joe Biden takes office on January 20. Even if Biden reinstates the pause retroactively, it could create confusion for borrowers as well as a mess for student loan processors who aren’t built to suddenly stop or start payments -- all while the economic recovery slows and Covid-19 cases surge. And either way, Biden will be left with a choice: Keep Trump’s policy in place, or go bigger and cancel debt altogether, a step some Democrats argue Biden can take without Congress. Biden on Monday sidestepped a question about whether he would use executive power to forgive student debt. Instead, he expressed support for the House Democrats’ stimulus package, which would extend the suspension of payments through September 2021 and cancel some student debt. “Legislation from the Democratic House calls for an immediate $10,000 forgiveness of student loans,” Biden said. “It’s holding people up. They’re in real trouble. They’re having to make choices between paying their student loan and paying the rent, those kinds of decisions. It should be done immediate-

6

Joe Biden – President Elect ly,” he added. An Unprecedented Move Trump originally waived interest on student loans in March, as large parts of the economy began to shut down in response to the coronavirus pandemic. A broader version of student loan relief was included in the $2 trillion economic stimulus package signed into law two weeks later. Under the program, the US government automatically suspended payments and waived interest on federal student loans through September. Trump later moved the expiration date to the end of the year by executive order. The suspension and interest waiver applied only to federally held loans, which covered roughly 85% of federal student loans. That included loans known as Direct federal loans, as well as PLUS loans that parents may have taken out on behalf of their

children. It excluded some federal loans that are guaranteed by the government by not technically held by it. Generally, those were disbursed prior to 2010. Suspending Payments vs. Canceling Student Debt The emergency moves came after years of debate among Democrats over how to ease Americans’ gigantic student loan debt. Yet, unlike more progressive Democrats, Biden did not initially include student debt cancellation in his campaign platform. But he eventually embraced a plan to forgive $10,000 per borrower to help families during the pandemic as part of a July report released by a joint task force with Sen. Bernie Sanders, his longest lasting opponent in the Democratic primary election. Progressive Democrats already

www.StyleMagazine.com

appear ready to pressure Biden to uphold this pledge, including Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who’s urging Biden to “cancel billions of dollars in student loan debt” on day one. Warren, along with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, called on Trump in September to cancel $50,000 in student loan debt per borrower. Warren argues that the secretary of education has the authority to broadly cancel federal student loans, a claim backed up in a memo from lawyers at Harvard’s Legal Services Center and its Project on Predatory Student Lending. But Biden may be reluctant to wipe away debt unilaterally and prefer it come from Congress -- which will remain divided unless Democrats sweep two runoff Senate elections in Georgia on January 5. “The Secretary does have some power to cancel student debt. But there is both a legal and a practical question of how far the administration can go,” said Robert Shireman, who served in the Obama administration as deputy undersecretary of education and is currently a senior fellow at The Century Foundation.

mid an election with historic voter turnout, the Harris County Elections Commission made strides toward changing the way future races will be organized. The commission voted Oct. 30 to tap Isabel Longoria as the final candidate for the county’s new elections administrator position. Longoria is a longtime community organizer and currently serves as special adviser on voting rights to County Clerk Chris Hollins. “Isabel is someone who I trust deeply, as a matter of someone who is competent and a proven leader in a large organization that is deeply complicated and further complicated in Harris county and the state of Texas,” Hollins said, referring to recent voter-access lawsuits between state and local officials. “We need someone who has her version and her commitment to protect the right to vote in the county, increase voter access and someone who is a problemsolver by nature.” The position will overtake election-related duties from the county clerk and the tax-assessor collector,

Criminal Sentencing Sweeps Up One Defendent In Fraud Case By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

Kirbyjon Caldwell, To Be Sentenced, Dec. 3

G

regory Alan Smith, 58, of Shreveport has been sentenced by United States District Judge S. Maurice Hicks Jr. to 72 months (6 years) in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release for conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Smith was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $3,588,500, as well as a fine of $100,000. Smith, formerly a financial investment advisor in Shreveport, persuaded multiple victims to invest approximately $3.5 million with his co-defendant, Kirbyjon H. Caldwell. According to evidence presented to the court, Smith began approaching existing clients, friends, and acquaintances in the spring of 2013 about an investment opportunity in historical Chinese bonds. Smith told these potential investors that they would be obtaining a partial ownership interest in the bonds and that they would receive exponential returns on their investments in a short period of time. Smith neglected to tell these individuals that historical Chinese bonds, bonds issued by the former Republic of China prior to losing power to the communist government in 1949, held no value. In fact, the bonds were considered by the Securities and Exchange Commission to be mere collectables with no value outside of the memorabilia market. After Smith made the fraudulent pitch, victim-investors who believed and trusted Smith agreed to invest in these bonds. These victims were provided with a “participation agreement”

12

indicating that if the sale of the bonds failed to occur within a certain number of days, the invested funds would be returned within a defined period of time. They were instructed to wire funds to various bank accounts held by or controlled by Caldwell or his representative. The funds were then divided between Smith, Caldwell, and others. Smith received $1.08 million of the total $3.5 million and used it to pay down loans, purchase two luxury sport utility vehicles, place a down payment on a vacation property, and maintain his lifestyle. The victims never received the promised returns from these Chinese bonds. “This case proves that even those you trust to have your best interest at heart sometimes may not. The victims in this case thought their trusted advisor and friend would never lead them astray but sadly, he was merely a con man who led them down an unwanted path,” said Acting United States Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook. “Our office will continue to be vigilant in holding defendants such as this accountable for their fraudulent actions.” Sentencing for Smith’s co-defendant, Caldwell, is scheduled for December 3, 2020. The FBI conducted the investigation and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Seth D. Reeg and C. Mignonne Griffing prosecuted the Federal Fraud case. www.FBI.gov www.StyleMagazine.com

UNCF “DREAMGIRLS” Drive-In Night Please Join UNCF - Houston – Saturday, November 21st At Tom Bass Park from 6pm – 9pm ‘There’s A Story Behind Every Student’s Dream’ By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

Lerretta Devine – Making a Special VIP Virtual Appearance Saturday

S

taying safe and having fun, the UNCF (United Negro College Fund) Houston annual fundraising gala is transforming into an in-person movie night this year. Families and friends can socially distance and relax in their cars while enjoying Paramount Pictures’ “Dream Girls” at the “A Mind Is…” Reimagined: Drive-In Movie event, helping UNCF raise vitally needed funds for its mission of helping financially challenged students get to and through college. “Events like this are important. During this time when we’re all facing a pandemic, helping students earn their college degrees is as important as ever,” said Dr. Michael L. Lomax, president and

CEO, UNCF. “These students are our future pandemic frontliners—our future doctors, nurses, teachers and technologists—people who can make a real difference in all of our lives. We need as many students working on their college degrees as we can enable.” The event will be an unforgettable experience set for 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Tom Bass Park Section 1 in Houston Texas. Gates open at 5:00pm. Legendary actress, Loretta Devine, who starred as “Lorrell” in the original Broadway musical will make a virtual appearance. Devine previously supported UNCF during the 33rd annual UNCF: An Evening Of Stars® which aired in 2012. Proceeds from the event will benefit HBCUs and students across Texas and the United States who lack the financial support to go to or complete college. During a time of mandatory social distancing, vehicles will be allowed entry into the drive-in through a donation of $250. “Dream Girls” evolved from the 1981 Broad-

way musical which follows the story of Motown recording group, The Supremes, and the history of music during the 1960s and 1970s. The 2006 film, written and directed by Bill Condon, stars Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé, Eddie Murphy, Jennifer Hudson, Anika Noni Rose and Danny Glover. Presented by H-E-B Grocery Company, this year’s corporate event sponsors and local businesses include Shell, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Comcast, Brentwood Baptist Church, CenterPoint Energy, Elijah and Diana White and more.

o surprises were made by the way the Houston ISD School Board voted 6-3 to decline interim superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan the permanent job to run the largest district in Texas. “Am I shocked? No,” said board member Wanda Adams. She further added that current board members strayed from their word given at the beginning of their tenure. With this vote, the board has indicated they want to start a nationwide search for a permanent superintendent to have a transparent and fair process. Board president Sue Deiggard even offered Lathan the opportunity to apply for the position. “I respect the decision of the HISD Board of Education to resume the search for a superintendent. Just as my focus has been for the past five years in HISD, my goal remains the same: to continue to achieve academic excellence in the district and support each and every student, parent, and staff member to the best of our team’s abilities,” said Lathan in a district issued statement. This vote follows the long history of the widely known dysfunctional

Houston ISD Board Blocks Dr. Grenita Lathan From School District’s Top Spot By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor – www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire and racially basis board. Some members have not been shy in their disapproval of the performance of Lathan. And some have shown by their previous actions that they favor a Hispanic superintendent since the district is a Hispanic majority. The board was under scrutiny when it was discovered that some met privately to devise a plan to replace Lathan with previous superintendent Dr. Abe Saavedra. And that was not the only time board members tried to have Lathan replaced. It is interesting that the board would want to deny the job when so many came out in favor of her having the top spot including 45 HISD administrators; several politicians as Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, State Reps. Alma Allen and Senfronia Thompson; teachers, parents, and others. Supporters, like board members Wanda Adams, Pat Allen, and Kathy Blueford-Daniels, all echoed that the district needs stability during the time of this global pandemic with one has proven leadership and has a genuine in making sure students have the best for their future.

In her tenure as interim superintendent, Lathan has weathered the remnants of Hurricane Harvey, budget problems, special education operation difficulties, lawsuits, and more. A new superintendent search will put a larger dip in the budget with an estimated cost of $210,000. Despite that, she has sustained growth in the district while successfully operating in uncharted waters of a global pandemic to fulfill safety, educational, technology, and other needs of administrators, students, teachers, and other staff. She has turned many of HISD low performing schools around like Kashmere High School who met academic standing for the first time in eleven years. Houston Association of School Administration Executive Director Josephine Rice said in a previous interview that Lathan has probably brought the district through more turmoil as interim superintendent than most superintendents in a lifetime. It is still unclear if the board can hire a permanent superintendent since they are still in limbo of being

Dr. Grenita Lathan replaced by the Texas Education Agency after Wheatley High School received a failing grade for the seventh straight year. The lawsuit is pending to go before the Texas Supreme Court. If the verdict does not fall in favor of the board, TEA will select the new superintendent and board members. Adams, who has resigned from the board to serve a justice of the peace position, further stated, “I just hope and pray that as you all move forward, that you lead with honesty and integrity.”
