COMMENTARY

GIVING THANKS

By Ben Jealous, National Political Writer

I

n everything give thanks.” That Bible verse can be hard to put into practice. Just by being alive we can be sure of having moments of sadness as well as happiness. When you’re active in politics, you experience both wins and losses. Sometimes it can be hard to feel grateful. That might be true for a lot of people this year. COVID-19 has brought painful losses to thousands of families. The unfairness of our health and justice systems has been laid bare. At the start of the year, we saw shocking violence during the Capitol insurrection. And as we near the end of the year, we are still seeing our former president and many of his supporters lie about that violence—and about last year’s election. And it is deeply discouraging to see how many political leaders are willing to spread false information. It is enraging how many are willing to inflame racism and resentment to win elections. Still, even though we live with the persistent injustice, I believe the old saying “count your blessings” is good advice anytime—and especially at Thanksgiving. I am grateful for my family, friends, and co-workers. I am grateful to be in good health. I am grateful for scientists who developed COVID-19 vaccines and treatments that are protecting the people I love and making it possible for us to spend time together. I am grateful that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are our president and vice president. I am grateful to activists and voters in Georgia who barely got to take a

4

breath after the presidential election, and who kept at it until they put Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff in the U.S. Senate. I am grateful that President Biden has taken seriously the responsibility to nominate federal judges who believe in the “for all” part of “liberty and justice for all.” I am grateful that Democratic senators have moved quickly to confirm the most personally and professionally diverse group of judges in our history. This is an important first step in limiting the damage being done by former President Donald Trump’s rightwing judges. I am grateful that Congress passed and President Biden signed a major infrastructure bill. I am grateful that it will create good jobs, make needed repairs to roads and bridges, and help make affordable access to the internet available to more people across the country. I am grateful to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for appointing a select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on our democracy. I am grateful that the Department of Justice has supported the committee’s work by indicting former Trump aide Steve Bannon for refusing a congressional subpoena to testify. And I am truly grateful for a growing voting rights movement that is bringing people together to demand that the White House and congressional leaders do what it takes to pass voting rights legislation this year. Over the past few months, voting rights activists have repeatedly gathered outside the White House. We have called

November 25, 2021 - December 01, 2021

on President Biden to make passage of federal voting rights legislation an urgent priority. Many of us have been arrested. I am grateful that I can stand with organizational and religious leaders and brothers and sisters from the labor and environmental and women’s rights and D.C. statehood movements in recognition of our common purpose—and the common threat we all face from new voter suppression laws. I am also deeply grateful for the inspiring group of young people who are rising into leadership of this generation’s civil rights and voting rights movement. Among those who were arrested in the cause of voting rights this month were Martin Luther King, Jr.’s granddaughter and my own daughter. Their activism has been touching and inspiring. I could go on. One of the benefits of counting your blessings is that once you

51

get started you keep thinking of new things. If you are feeling blessed right now, I rejoice with you. If you are feeling stressed, I feel for you. Wherever you are on your journey, I hope that Thanksgiving gives you an opportunity to take a breath, take stock, and make a new or renewed commitment to being involved in the hard but rewarding work of bending the arc of the moral universe a little bit more in the direction of justice.

BUSINESS: SUPPORT LOCAL STORES AND RESTAURANTS ON SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY By Annie Spilman - www.MarshallNewsMessenger.com

(REUTERS/Daniel Acker)

S

mall business is the beating heart of Texas's economy. The national chains seem to get most of the attention, but small businesses account for an incredible 99.8% of all businesses in the state. Small businesses do a lot throughout the year to help their communities. They sponsor our children’s sports teams, donate to local charities, and create jobs. During the pandemic, they worked to keep their employees and customers safe while managing to deliver the goods and services people needed to get through the crisis. This weekend, we can thank them by shopping local on Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday is always the Saturday after Thanksgiving,

and it’s become such a part of Thanksgiving weekend that it’s easy to forget it’s been around only since 2010. Small Business Saturday was created as a response to another economic crisis, the Great Recession, a crisis that threatened to put many local businesses out of business. Since then, Small Business Saturday become one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Sales figures just for Texas aren’t available, but nationwide, people spent about $19.8 billion at independent merchants last November on Small Business Saturday, according to American Express. That sales figure was up slightly from the year before – no small feat considering the social distancing and other precautions still in place a year ago.

I think a big reason so many people made a point of shopping small is they realize that small businesses aren’t the same as the chain stores and restaurants. You’ll find things at a small business you won’t find at the mall, and when you shop or dine small, you stand a good chance of dealing directly with the owner of the business, someone who has a vested interest not only in making you a satisfied customer but in turning you into a regular, someone who’ll stop by throughout the year. That’s important because when we shop small, we make our communities stronger. American Express estimates that 67 cents of every dollar spent at a small business stays in the community. Small businesses hold our com-

munities together, which is why I’m encouraging everyone to shop local on Small Business Saturday. Texas’s economy is a lot healthier than it was a year ago, but we’re still not back to where we were before the pandemic began in 2020. By shopping local on Small Business Saturday and throughout the year, we can help our communities not only recover but help our communities grow. Annie Spilman is the Texas director of the National Federation of Independent Business, the nation’s leading small business advocacy organization.

NATIONAL: HOWARD UNIVERSITY REACHES AGREEMENT, ENDING 34 DAYS OF STUDENT PROTEST By Nicquel Terry Ellis - www.CNN.com

(Source: The Live Movement / Twitter.com/_LiveMovement)

T

he students at Howard University have reached an agreement with university officials after a monthlong protest over housing conditions on campus. Wayne Frederick, the president of the historically Black college in Washington, DC, said Monday afternoon that the agreement between the school and the students who occupied Blackburn University Center over poor housing concerns is a "welcome step forward." In a video message and letter posted on the school's website, Frederick said, "even one issue in one of our dormitories is too many, and we will continue to remain vigilant in our pledge to maintain safe and high-end

6

housing." Students had been sleeping in tents and air mattresses at the school's Blackburn Center since Oct. 12 to protest what they say are poor dorm conditions. The students reported mold, flooding and roach and mice infestation in the buildings. They demanded that the university provide a comprehensive plan to fix the building issues and be more transparent. Jasmine Joof, spokeswoman for the #BlackburnTakeover, said Monday that the agreement has effectively ended their protest. "We have achieved increased scrutiny, transparency and accountability," Joof told CNN. While not offering details on

November 25, 2021 - December 01, 2021

what the next steps are, Frederick said he will continue to "work collaboratively" to build a culture where the concerns of everyone are heard. He said he would share details "soon on our ideas that will address concerns and build a culture where all are heard." "The health and well-being of our students is the most important part of my job as president," he said. The sit-ins garnered national attention with lead civil rights activists that include Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. William Barber II and Martin Luther King III publicly supporting the students. Jackson was on campus earlier this month attempting to mediate the situation with students and Howard administration.

Student activists and civil rights leaders say the controversy is indicative of a widespread issue with crumbling buildings on century-old HBCU campuses that are often underfunded compared to predominately White institutions. CNN's Amanda Watts contributed to this report.

NATIONAL: VICE PRESIDENT HARRIS ANNOUNCEMENT - $1.5B IN HEALTH EQUITY FUNDING By www.StyleMagazine.com - White House

Vice President Kamala Harris ( AP Photo/Jay LaPrete)

V

ice President Kamala Harris will announced a historic $1.5 billion investment to help grow and diversify the nation’s health care workforce, and bolster equitable health care in the communities that need it most during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the years to come. These awards are supporting the National Health Service Corps, Nurse Corps, and Substance Use Disorder Treatment and Recovery programs. These programs address workforce shortages and health disparities by providing scholarship and loan repayment funding for health care students and professionals, in exchange for a service commitment in hard-hit and highrisk communities. Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, this funding will support over 22,700 providers—the largest field strength in history for these programs and a record number of skilled doctors, dentists, nurses, and behavioral health providers committed to working in underserved communities during a moment when we need them the most. More than 23.6 million patients in

the U.S. receive care from National Health Service Corps and Nurse Corps clinicians. During the pandemic, thousands of these health providers have served in community health centers and hospitals across the country, caring for COVID-19 patients, supporting the mental health of their communities, administering COVID-19 tests and lifesaving treatments, and putting shots in arms. Only about 7 percent of physicians in the United States identify as Black or Hispanic/Latino despite the fact that Black and Hispanic/Latino Americans account for 31 percent of the nation’s total population. Over 25 percent of physicians serving through the National Health Service Corps identify as Black or Hispanic/Latino. The mobilization of these providers is a critical step towards addressing racial and ethnic disparities in health outcomes and expanding the representation of these communities in health care professions. Further, the United States is projected to face a shortage of almost 60,000 primary care doctors, dentists, and psychiatrists over the next decade, and needs an

estimated 158,000 new nurses to graduate every year for the rest of the decade. A substantial barrier in meeting these health care needs is the student debt associated with graduate health education, which can average more than $200,000 per student and prevent students from underserved communities from even considering a career in health care professions. To further support the expansion of primary care, the Administration also plans to begin awarding $330 million in American Rescue Plan funding for Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education. This additional funding will further support the expansion of the primary care physician and dental workforce in underserved communities through community-based primary care residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine-pediatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, general dentistry, pediatric dentistry, or geriatrics. The announcements directly respond to the recommendations of the Presidential COVID-19 Health Equity Task

Force, which submitted its final report to the White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator earlier this month. During the Vice President’s final year in the Senate, she introduced a bill that became a blueprint for the President’s formation of this Task Force—recognizing that the perspective of public health experts, practitioners, advocates, and activists would be critical to support any federal effort to center equity in our pandemic response. Additionally, this funding builds on the billions of dollars in investments the Biden-Harris Administration has already awarded for equity focused programs and initiatives over the past 10 months, including $785 million the Administration announced earlier this month to continue keeping equity centered in our COVID-19 response.

THANKSGIVING:

BE YE THANKFUL FOR FAMILY

By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor - www.StyleMagazine.com

A

beautiful table is before you filled with turkey, dressing, macaroni and cheese, green beans, spinach, corn casserole, crescent rolls, ambrosia salad, potato salad, cranberry sauce, pound cake, peach cobbler, sweet potato pie, and whatever else your family likes to eat to celebrate Thanksgiving. Holidays always are a great feast of foods. That is not by accident in the Black family. The Black family history with food as the star of celebration dates back to many, many years ago. To quote young Ahmad from Soul Food, "During slavery us black folks didn't have a whole lot to celebrate. So cooking became the way we expressed our love for one another." He continued, "More than just eating, it was a time for sharing our joys and sorrows." Although he was referencing Big Mama's Sunday dinners, this could easily fit in reference to Thanksgiving and any other holiday or celebration like it. This is true for Black families but also those of other races. This is what made the pandemic so hard to deal with and made holidays even more difficult. The lack of gatherings like this and the lack of face-to-face connections affected all of our mental health. Even though a lot of emphasis is placed on what is served at Thanksgiving (and other holidays and celebrations) and the massive quantity of it all, Thanksgiving is more than just breaking bread together. Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for your blessings, one of those being family. Be thankful for life, health and wealth. Not monetary wealth but the wealth that riches can't buy. This Thanksgiving people may run out of fingers

10

counting everything they are grateful for because this Thanksgiving is the first many where many will be able to physically reconnect with loved ones that haven't laid hands on in close to two years because of this global pandemic. Conference calls, zoom meetings, drive-bys, and conversations between windows helped to keep family and friends ties but nothing beats the actual human touch. Be ye thankful for the vaccine. Researchers and modern science has allowed several vaccines to be produced to give us all some protection against COVID. Hallelujah! With the release, millions were able to get the shot once, twice, or three times and thereby removing the gates from our invisible prisons with caution. "Get vaccinated and you can enjoy the holidays very easily. And if you're not, please be careful. Get tested if you need to get tested when you're getting together, but that's not a substitute for getting vaccinated. Get yourself vaccinated and you can continue to enjoy interactions with your family and others," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. What does it mean to be fully vaccinated? This holiday is the first one that many generations will come together under one roof to mix and mingle and share a meal. So it is vital that every family member be fully vaccinated for a safe and fun Thanksgiving and with there being a vaccine available for everyone five and up, including the booster shot for adults, this hopefully won't

November 25, 2021 - December 01, 2021

be a problem at your house. The latest numbers coming from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention clearly show not all Americans are vaccinated. However, a little over half the country is. Dr. Fauci defines being fully vaccinated as having two shots within a specific time frame. He also added that it is not about the effectiveness of the vaccine but how long it lasts. "The bottom line, common denominator of all of this data, is we should get vaccinated if you're not vaccinated, and boosted if you have been vaccinated," Dr. Fauci added. COVID is not the only worry A COVID outbreak is on the mind of doctors but also is the flu. Ideally, everyone six months and older should be vaccinated for the flu by now since September and October are the months to get the vaccines. Whether the vaccine is the egg-based or the cell or recombinant based, the current flu vaccine will protect against four viruses. The Houston Health Department says a flu outbreak can happen anytime between now until the end of May 2022. 2The Houston Health Department is offering flu shots at its health centers to uninsured and underinsured people on a sliding scale that ranges from free to $15. Bonus is that people can get both the flu and COVID vaccine during the same visit to their medical provider. Just make sure shots are taken in different arms “The protection offered by flu shots is more important than ever, not just for Houstonians but also for our local

www.StyleMagazine.com

healthcare systems,” said Dr. David Persse, chief medical officer for the City of Houston. “COVID-19 has stressed area hospitals for weeks. When people receive their flu shots, they will protect themselves and at the same time reduce the demand that our already burden hospitals are likely to face from the upcoming rise in patients with flu-related complications during the flu season.” Preparing for the big day Health experts advise to try to isolate as much as possible before Thanksgiving and keep track of any symptoms one might feel. Another precaution is to try to limit the gathering to small numbers and make sure all are fully vaccinated. Consider hosting the gathering outside for more protection. Since rain is predicted in Houston's forecast, renting a tent to be outside is also a good idea. Of course, mask up whenever possible. Avoid unvaccinated people before and after Thanksgiving. Also consider taking a COVID test after Thanksgiving to err on the side of safety. Doctors warn we are not out of the woods of the pandemic yet but we are a lot better from whence we came. The bottom line is to be thankful and enjoy this holiday in the safest manner possible. Only you can weigh out your options as to what that safety level looks like for you and your family. Educate yourself, take precautions, and proceed accordingly. On behalf of the Houston Style Magazine family we wish everyone a happy, food-filled, fun, and safe Thanksgiving!

LOCAL: METRO APPROVES PURCHASE OF 20 ELECTRIC BUSES AS PART OF SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE

T

he Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County voted unanimously to carry out a contract with Nova Bus for the purchase of 20 electric buses. The METRO board of directors voted on the roughly $22 million contract at the Nov. 18 board meeting. METRO applied for the Federal Transit Administration's Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant program to help pay for the buses, according to an email from Monica Russo, public information officer for METRO. The grant is expected to cover the majority of the cost, as METRO applied for $20 million, Russo said. Nova Bus is a bus manufacturing company based in Canada. The contract comes on the heels of METRO’s sustainability vision statement adopted in August. One of the goals of the statement is to have a 100% zero-emission bus replacement by 2030, according to Russo.

By www.StyleMagazine.com

Courtesy of Proterra, Inc. The buses are expected to be in operation by the fourth quarter of 2022 Russo said, and they will initially have routes that serve communities more affected by carbon emissions

and ones that have been chosen by Houston Complete Communities. Ten buses will serve METRO's 28 OST-Wayside route, and the other 10 will serve the 402 Bellaire Quickline route.

Minority publications win big with Comcast RISE Investment Fund Grant. (Photo: Courtesy of Comcast)

ouston Style Magazine was one of the 100 recipients of

the Comcast Rise Investment Fund grants. Each small business will receive a one-time $10,000 grant from the fund. More than 100 businesses in the area will also receive technology and marketing resources. The recipients are among nearly 6,700 entrepreneurs nationwide who have been selected through the Comcast RISE program, which provides marketing, technology, and capital support to small business owners. “We are proud of all of our small businesses, the impact they have in Fort Bend County is invaluable. Many of our business owners, particularly our minority owned businesses, have faced unprecedented challenges over the past year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and require a wide range of support to help their businesses survive,” stated Fort Bend

County Judge KP George. “The Comcast Rise Investment Fund Grant provides these business owners with the critical financial lifeline and the resources needed so they can sustain and grow their businesses.” Through Comcast RISE, the company also announced it is on track to support 13,000 small businesses by the end of the year with marketing or technology support such as a TV campaign, production of a TV commercial or consulting services from Effectv, the advertising sales division of Comcast Cable, or computer equipment, internet, voice or cybersecurity services from Comcast Business. “Since we launched Comcast RISE a year ago, we have assisted more than 200 small businesses throughout the Houston area with either marketing, technology, or monetary grants. This round of Comcast RISE grants will provide even

more small business owners of color with the resources and tools they need to thrive,” said Ralph Martinez, senior vice president for Comcast’s Houston region. “We look forward to empowering their success.” To further build on the program’s success and provide support to even more small businesses, Comcast also announced today a major expansion to eligibility, enabling all women-owned small businesses nationwide to apply. This expansion recognizes and seeks to help address the persistent inequities women continue to face in accessing the resources and funding that are critical to success.

HEALTH: FULLY VACCINATED FAMILY MEMBERS CAN CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS WITHOUT MASKS, FAUCI SAYS By Jacqueline Howard and Dakin Andone, www.CNN.com

I

Photo: Getty Images

f you and your family members are fully vaccinated against Covid-19, it's OK for you to ditch the masks this holiday season when you're around each other, Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN Sunday. "That's what I'm going to do with my family," Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union." However, the nation's top infectious disease expert also noted if you are traveling or are unaware of thevaccination status

14

of the people around you, then you should wear a mask in those situations. "Get vaccinated and you can enjoy the holidays very easily. And if you're not, please be careful," Fauci said. "Get tested if you need to get tested when you're getting together, but that's not a substitute for getting vaccinated. Get yourself vaccinated and you can continue to enjoy interactions with your family and others." Fauci's comments come as the US faces the second holiday season of the pandemic, but the first with safe and effective vaccines now available to people ages 5 and older. Still, a significant part of the eligible population remains unvaccinated. According to data published Friday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 196 million people, or 59% of the total US population is fully vaccinated. But about 26.6% of the eligible population, or 83 million people, have yet to receive a first dose. The seven-day average of vaccinations has increased -about 36% compared to last week -- due in large part to vaccinations among newly eligible children. Definition of 'fully vaccinated' remains the same Another factor here is vaccine booster doses: As of Friday, the CDC and the US Food and Drug Administration have approved boosters for every adult who received Moderna or Pfizer/BioNTech's Covid-19 vaccine six months ago or longer. The agencies had already said everyone who got Johnson & Johnson's Janssen vaccine two months ago or more should get a booster. For now, Fauci said the US definition of "fully vaccinated"

November 25, 2021 - December 01, 2021

remains the same -- two doses given within a certain timeframe -- but those guidelines could potentially change with more data. "Two shots for a time frame means you are fully vaccinated, but the thing you want to get the people and the viewers to understand, it isn't the effectiveness of the vaccine -- it's quite effective -- it's how long it lasts," he said. "We're going to take a look right now at what the durability is of the booster. We're going to follow people who get boosted," Fauci told Bash. "It will be guided by the science -- and people should not be put off by the fact that as time goes by and we learn more and more about the protection that we might modify the guidelines." Fauci underscored the importance of vaccines and boosters going into the next few months, as he noted an uptick in cases is "not unexpected" in the winter. Those who are eligible for vaccines but remain unvaccinated pose a risk not just to themselves and other people who are unvaccinated, he said, "but it also spills over into the vaccinated people, because no vaccine is 100% effective." "We have a lot of virus circulating around. We know that there are breakthrough infections and that's how you get the uptick in cases," Fauci said. "The bottom line, common denominator of all of this data, is we should get vaccinated if you're not vaccinated, and boosted if you have been vaccinated."

CULTURE: DACAMERA PRESENTS ETIENNE CHARLES CREOLE SOUL ON JANUARY 14, 2022 By www.StyleMagazine.com

O

Irrepressible trumpeter Etienne Charles debut with his Creole Soul band, which infuses reggae, Calypso and Afro-Caribbean music into a distinctive version of modern jazz

ne recent November morning, after months, even years, working apart, a chamber ensemble, jazz trio and more than a dozen opera singers finally have an opportunity to rehearse together, in person, at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams. Director Lileana Blain-Cruz picks up a microphone and acknowledges the Los Angeles-based jazz elder who couldn't make the trip east. "I just wanted to just take a moment to register the momentousness of this, that we are all here together just to call up the name of Wayne Shorter in this space," Blain-Cruz says. "Let's give it up for Wayne Shorter!" The room erupts in hoots and applause. Shorter's first opera, ... (Iphigenia), is set to premiere in Boston this week. The work then travels to three further cities: Washington,

D.C., and Berkeley and Santa Monica, Calif. It's taken literally decades to get to this moment. Shorter started thinking about a long-form, dramatic work when he was a 19-year-old music student at New York University. "This opera was going to be based on motorcycle gangs," he said via Zoom from L.A., "like the movie The Wild One that Brando was in." Then Shorter heard Leonard Bernstein was working on a musical about gangs, called West Side Story, so he put his idea aside. After graduating in 1956, and then two years in the army, Shorter proceeded to transform American music with other jazz pioneers, including Art Blakey and Miles Davis, and in the fusion group Weather Report. His Grammy-winning acoustic quartet, formed in 2000, endured for two decades.

But through all those years, opera still lingered in the composer's imagination – until he met composer, singer and bass prodigy Esperanza Spalding. "I noticed that she would attack things that no one else would," Shorter recalls of Spalding's singular way of playing. The two jazz revolutionaries, who came up in completely different eras, connected deeply, and Shorter eventually told Spalding about his long-held operatic fantasy. He thought it might involve taking a 400-year-old play by the Greek writer Euripides and turning it into something new and unbridled. "When I first looked at a good opera book, the first thing I saw was a sentence that said, 'In opera, anything goes," Shorter recalls. "Me and Esperanza, we started talking and talking – and then she said, 'Let's do it. Come on." "Damn, I'm sure Wayne has said this other people – that he wants to make an opera," Spalding recalls thinking at the time. "So the fact that momentum hasn't been generated to do that is problematic." Then in 2018, Shorter was hospitalized. Spalding was afraid to push, but says that realizing his opera felt more urgent than ever. She confronted her friend and mentor with a question she says was influenced by Alejandro Jodorowsky's book Psychomagic, which explores the power of lucid dreaming: "OK, Wayne, like in the dream of your life, if anything could happen, what do you want? What do you want? We want to facilitate that with you." Shorter's reply: "I want to make real magic. No tricks."

ENTERTAINMENT: SELLING TAMPA SET FOR DECEMBER PREMIERE AT NETFLIX By www.StyleMagazine.com

N

etflix is spinning off its popular reality show Selling Sunset into a brand new market. Selling Tampa features the women of Allure Realty, a Black-owned firm. All eight episodes hit Netflix Wednesday, Dec. 15. Along the Florida coast, Allure Realty stands out among the crowd. Owned by military vet Sharelle Rosado, this all Black, all female real estate firm has its eyes set on dominating the Suncoast. These ladies are equally as fun as they are fiercely ambitious, with all of them vying to be on top of the lavish world of luxury waterfront real estate. Sharelle has big plans for her brokerage and won’t let anyone or anything get in the way of making her dreams a reality. Rosado and her agents Alexis Williams, Anne-Sophie Petit, Colony Reeves, Juawana Williams, Karla Giorgio, Rena Frazier and Tennille Moore star. A new teaser doesn’t give much away about Selling Tampa, but we’re guessing it probably follows the original’s formula of dramatic real estate deals, office politics and personal relationship issues. Though we must admit we hope the women of Allure focus more on the business and less on the drama, it wouldn’t be a reality show without the drama. What’s most exciting is that while there are plenty of high-end real estate agency shows on TV, very few of them include Black agents, let alone a Black-owned, all-female firm. Do not underestimate the impact a project like this can have on the TV landscape. Before Selling Tampa graces our screens, Selling Sunset returns for a 10-episode fourth season on Wednesday, Nov. 24. As if that wasn’t enough, Selling the OC, which features the Newport Beach office of the Oppenheimer Group, is in production.

SPORTS: TEXANS PULL OFF UPSET OVER THE TITANS TO END LOSING STREAK By Brian Barefield, Sports Editor - www.StyleMagazine.com

C

oming off the bye week, the Houston Texans knew that they were headed into hostile territory to play one of the best teams in the AFC in the Tennessee Titans. Houston was on an eight-game losing streak, while the Titans were trending the opposite way with a six-game winning streak. If you asked the oddsmakers in Las Vegas, this game was a sure-fire bet if you took Tennessee to beat Houston, even with the Texans receiving double-digit points. They have a saying in the NFL that goes, “Any given Sunday.” It means that anything can happen once two teams take the field no matter what the odds are, and that is what happened when the Texans defeated the Titans 22-13 in Nashville. “It's been a long time since we felt that,” said Texans head coach David Culley about getting the second victory of the season. “It's tough to win in this league no matter who you play. We tell our guys that at this point in the season records don't matter. “When you play in this league in the National Football League and you go out and you get five turnovers and you don't turn the ball over, it doesn't matter who you play. You're going to have a pretty good chance to win a football game.” It was the Texans' defense who rose to the occasion on Sunday, as they caused four interceptions on Titans starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who seemed to be out of sync for the entire game. In all, the Texans had five turnovers for the game, which brings their total to ten, including their previous outing

16

against the Miami Dolphins. “We put a huge emphasis on it every week,” said linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill about the defense getting turnovers. Houston took a surprising 12-0 lead into halftime after scoring on three straight offensive possessions led by a seven-yard run from quarterback Tyrod Taylor who went airborne for the first touchdown scored on the road for the Texans in four games. We called an option route for Rex (Burkhead) on that one,” Taylor said as he described the play after the game. “The defensive line kind of got in the vision of him. I stepped left to get to a better side of Rex and realized there was room to run, and I was able to make a play. I felt like the defensive guy was probably going to go low, so I went high.” Taylor, who was playing his third game of the season, scored another rushing touchdown in the third quarter to increase the lead to 19-0. Although the Titans scored 13 points in the second half, it was not enough to pull off the come from behind victory. The Texans will take on the New York Jets on Sunday at NRG, with a noon kickoff.

AUTO: CADILLAC LYRIQ LUXURY EV CROSSES CRUCIAL DEVELOPMENT MILESTONE By StyleMagazine.com Newswire

hen Cadillac engineers recently completed the “80 percent” validation drive for the 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ — a critical milestone in Cadillac’s first luxury EV’s development, marking a transition to the final stage prior to production. By confirming that all components and technologies are at or beyond 80 percent, engineers can now focus on fine tuning LYRIQ prior to production. “We have spent countless hours behind the wheel of our LYRIQ test fleet and in virtual testing environments to be sure we deliver our customers a comprehensive luxury experience expressed in an all-new electrified package,” said Jamie Brewer, executive chief engineer. “All the while we are remaining true to our brand promise by placing high priority on meticulous craftsmanship and intuitive integrated technologies.” The 80 percent drive resulted in performance evaluations of key LYRIQ driver-control and sensory elements, including a new interior audio signature developed to foster occupant comfort and confidence. “We’re now fine-tuning LYRIQ’s touchpoints,” said Brewer. “We’re making tweaks to a variety of areas as we do after every development drive, but we’re nearly there. Customers will love this driving experience and, we feel that it will redefine their expectations for electric luxury vehicles.” An accelerated launch schedule for LYRIQ, driven in part by advances in virtual development and the supporting parallel processes, took the team as far away as New Zealand for test drives. Cold-weather testing was conducted there in August to take advantage of the Southern Hemisphere’s winter, eliminating the need to wait for the season’s onset in the Northern Hemisphere. Isolated Precision The Ultium Platform is the central structural element of

LYRIQ’s chassis, delivering a low center of gravity, exceptional chassis stiffness, and nearly 50/50 front-to-rear weight balance. These factors give engineers unprecedented chassis-tuning flexibility that ushers in the next chapter of Cadillac’s ride and handling philosophy: Isolated Precision. “LYRIQ has exceptional torsional stiffness,” said Todd Bruder, lead development engineer. “As a result, we were able to dial in exceptional responsiveness in the steering and suspension systems while simultaneously elevating the brand’s signature feeling of comfort to an entirely new plateau.” Technologies such as a five-link front and rear suspension and frequency-dependent dampers help optimize LYRIQ’s ride quality and responsiveness. The five-link front suspension allowed engineers to tune the suspension bushings independently, enhancing ride quality while improving handling. The frequency-dependent dampers, standard on LYRIQ at

launch, differentiate between smaller impacts and larger swells on the road surface. This gives drivers more precise control in variable road conditions and provides greater comfort on smoother surfaces. Driving to an all-electric future Production for the 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ begins in spring 2022 at GM’s Spring Hill, Tennessee, assembly facility, which received a $2 billion investment to support EV production. An additional $2.3 billion is being invested in an all-new battery cell manufacturing plant at Spring Hill. LYRIQ will be built alongside other Cadillac SUVs, as part of the brand’s strategy to balance EV and ICE vehicle production during the transition to an all-electric future. At launch, LYRIQ will be offered in the exclusive wellequipped Debut Edition, available with advanced technologies and stirring performance enabled by its dedicated electric architecture. A 12-module, 100.4 kilowatt-hour battery pack and a rear-wheel Utium Drive unit deliver a GM estimated 340 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque and a GM-estimated range of 300 miles on a full charge1. LYRIQ also offers high-speed DC fast charging up to 190 kW, enabling customers to add up to 76 miles of range in about 10 minutes2. When charging at home, LYRIQ can replenish its battery at the fastest speeds currently allowed by industry standards when equipped with a Level 2, 19 kW charge module that allows for up to 52 miles of range per charging hour3.
