COMMENTARY

Americans Must Finda A Way To Reach Out By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

L

eave it to Donald Trump to run brazen subversion -- refusal to accept the decision of the voters in the presidential election -- as a clown show, marked by wingbat lawyers, delusional tweets, and hailstorms of lies. The noise, however, should not delude us: Trump is leading an American counter-reformation right to the edge of secession, if not beyond. And at the core of this is America’s continued struggle with race. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, the president’s lapdog, who just survived a challenge by an African-American Democrat, gave the game away when he declared -- on Fox TV, naturally -- “If we don’t challenge and change the U.S. election system, there’ll never be another Republican president elected again. President Trump should not concede.” Trump’s defeat revies the horrors Republicans felt with the election of Barack Obama: the stark realization that a party built on racial division as the party of white sanctuary could not survive in a multiracial democracy. Beginning with Barry Goldwater, Republicans grounded their party in the South, building a majority with racebait politics to divide working people. Trump was the extreme expression of the strategy, rising to notoriety by questioning Obama’s citizenship, winning with a campaign raising racial fears of lawless immigrants, and governing in the interests of the wealthy, the country club, and the special interests. Trump has sought to undermine this election from the start. For years, he and his party engaged in systematic voter suppression -- using gerrymandering, voter intimidation, purges of

4

the voting rolls, restricting the time and places for balloting, imposing new ID requirements and more. Then, even before a vote was cast, Trump charged there would be massive electoral fraud. If he had won, he would have said it was against the odds. Having lost, he claimed it was rigged. Then he unleashed his clown lawyers to paper the courts with lawsuits challenging votes without evidence. When even Republican judges rejected his claims, he continued to claim the election was stolen, even as he uses his lame duck period to deepen the crises, he leaves Biden. He has withdrawn from the open sky’s agreement with Russia. His Treasury secretary has closed down loan facilities for small businesses that the head of the Federal Reserve says are important in fighting the recession. He’s done nothing to get the Republican Senate to pass a rescue package to aid the millions still unemployed. Legislators fear he will shut down the government unless he gets big money to build his wall. Trump won’t succeed in maintaining power, but he is already succeeding in convincing his followers that the Biden presidency is illegitimate. The last time the election of a president was contested -- with race at the center of the dispute - was in 1860 with the election of Abraham Lincoln, when the slave states seceded, and the country descended into the Civil War. The Jefferson Davis of this time, Donald Trump is not likely to lead a formal secession. Instead, he seems intent on using this lame duck period to undermine the incoming administration. As a lame duck, he is essentially

unaccountable, particularly with the Republican Senate not willing to provide a check on his misfeasance. Clearly, there should be a bipartisan committee drawn from both houses of Congress to oversee the lame duck period and limit the damage a bitter untethered president can do. After he leaves office, Trump is likely to set up a sort of shadow government, using his tweets and media appearances to denounce the Biden administration. Republicans, in fear of the wrath of his supporters, will obstruct Biden at every turn. What Trump has made clear is that this subversion won’t end when Biden is inaugurated. It is likely to get more turbulent rather than less. The stakes are very high. Will the multiracial majority be able to build a governing coalition that can begin to address the fundamental reforms that Americans so

www.StyleMagazine.com

desperately need? Or will the embattled minority sabotage that possibility, divide the country or even move toward secession once more? In rejecting the verdict of the voters, Trump is charting a road to division. Americans must find a way to reach out, come together and go a different way. You can write to the Rev. CNN: Key Governmental Agency Acknowledges Joe Biden’s Win and Begins Formal Transistion

T

By Kristen Holmes and Jeremy Herb, www.CNN.Com – www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

he General Services Administration has informed President-elect Joe Biden that the Trump administration is ready to begin the formal transition process, according to a letter from Administrator Emily Murphy sent Monday afternoon and obtained by CNN. The letter is the first step the administration has taken to acknowledge President Donald Trump›s defeat, more than two weeks after Biden was declared the winner in the election. Murphy said she had not been pressured by the White House to delay the formal transition and did not make a decision “out of fear or favoritism.” “Please know that I came to my decision independently, based on the law and available facts,” Murphy wrote. “I was never directly or indirectly pressured by any Executive Branch official -- including those who work at the White House or GSA -- with regard to the substance or timing of my decision. To be clear, I did not receive any direction to delay my determination.” The letter marks Murphy’s formal sign off on Biden’s victory, a normally perfunctory process known as ascertainment. The move will allow the transition to officially begin, permitting current administration agency officials to coordinate with the incoming Biden team, and providing millions in government funding for the transition. The Biden team has not waited for the formal transition process to begin preparing for the presidency, as Biden announced several Cabinet

6

Donald Trump – One-Term Outgoing President picks on Monday. But the delay in ascertainment meant that Biden’s team was locked out from government data and could not make contact with federal agencies, nor could it spend $6.3 million in government funding now available for the transition. A Biden official said the most urgent need was for the transition to be given access to Covid-19 data and the vaccine distribution plans.

November 26 – December 02, 2020

The Biden team will now have access to additional office space inside the agencies and the ability to use federal resources for background checks on Biden’s White House staff appointments and Cabinet picks. Yohannes Abraham, executive director of Biden’s transition, said the start of the transition was a “needed step to begin tackling the challenges facing

www.StyleMagazine.com

Emily Murphy our nation, including getting the pandemic under control and our economy back on track.” “This final decision is a definitive administrative action to formally begin the transition process with federal agencies,” Abraham said. “In the days ahead, transition officials will begin meeting with federal officials to discuss the pandemic response, have a full accounting of our national security interests and gain complete understanding of the Trump administration’s efforts to hollow out government agencies.” The ascertainment letter was sent Monday after Michigan formally certified its election results earlier in the day and more Trump lawsuits were dismissed. Georgia certified its razorthin presidential results on Friday, and Pennsylvania is nearing certification of its election results, too. It’s the latest sign that Trump’s conspiracy-laden legal bid, led by Rudy Giuliani, to circumvent the outcome of the election is nearing an end. The Trump campaign’s lawsuits to delay certification of the election have been dismissed in multiple states, as his legal team has failed to provide any evidence of widespread voter fraud.

Joe Biden’s Margin Of Victory Over Trump Surpasses 6 Million Votes P

By Kate Sullivan, www.CNN.com www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

resident-elect Joe Biden’s margin of victory over President Donald Trump surpassed 6 million votes on Friday, as ballots continue to be counted across the nation. Trump has refused to accept defeat in the 2020 election, despite Biden’s decisive win in the Electoral College and the popular vote. The former vice president has won over 80 million votes, which is more votes than any US presidential candidate in history by a considerable margin. Trump has received nearly 74 million votes. CNN and other outlets projected Biden won the race nearly two weeks ago, when Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes put Biden above the 270 needed to become president. Biden ultimately is projected to get 306 electoral votes while Trump gets 232, the same amount Trump beat Hillary Clinton by in 2016. The President has refused to concede the race, making false claims about widespread voter fraud with no evidence and attempting to undermine the democratic process. Judges have repeatedly dismissed flimsy lawsuits

afterward. The President and his allies are attempting to cast doubt on the entire voting process and have refused to cooperate in a transition of power. General Services Administrator Emily Murphy has refused to formally start the presidential transition, blocking the Biden team from accessing millions of dollars in taxpayer funds and other resources. Biden’s team has warned the delay has real-world consequences to national security and their coronavirus response.

COVID-19 VACCINE: The Christmas Present We Are Waiting For, Right? By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

AstraZeneca H Pfizer H Moderna H J&J Houston Style Offers A Little Bit Of #Hope!

M

ore than 300 million new cases of COVID-19 were recorded for November. That breaks the record for any other month during this pandemic. It is thought those numbers will get higher as we start the holiday season. Instead of being joyful, many families are feeling hopeless whether the empty feeling is from a life loss, job loss, or separation anxiety. Americans are ready to give up on 2020. Before you throw the towel all the way in, allow me to offer a little bit of hope. The world has been on pins and needles waiting for the news that a vaccine is available for worldwide distribution. Now we are closer than ever before. Read more about the three drug companies racing against time

AstraZeneca

Drugmakers at AstraZeneca say the public can expect their vaccine as early as December 2020. Tests indicate that the vaccine has a 70% efficacy rate. Several trials were done to support this data. The trials conducted at the University of Oxford were completed in Brazil and the United Kingdom. A 90% efficacy was shown in one dosing regimen. A 62% efficacy was seen in those who were given a half dose first followed by a full dose a month later. The 70% efficacy that was mentioned above was reached when participants were given two full doses a month apart. Researchers are confident that this method is the best to rev of the immune system. “What we’ve always tried to do with a vaccine is fool the immune system into thinking that there’s a dangerous infection there that it needs to respond to -- but doing it in a very safe way,” Professor Andrew Pollard, the trial’s lead investigator, explained in a previous interview. “So we get the immune response and we get the immune memory ... waiting and ready if the pathogen itself is then encountered.” Unlike other vaccines that must be kept in extreme conditions, the AstraZenca vaccine can be stored in normal settings for up to six months. Another bonus is due to basic storage the drug is actually very cheap in comparison to Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech.

10

The United Kingdom has ordered 100 million doses already and more will be available next year.

Pfizer/BioNTech

The Pfizer vaccine has had much promise as well. Their drug has been found to have an efficacy of 90% in preventing infections according to CNN. Using an innovative technology messenger RNA, cells are tricked by genetic material to produce protein that resembles the virus. The immune system attacks the protein. Researchers believe that all of this is good news as it will control the pandemic, use spike protein as a target, and allow the spike protein to fight cells. “There has always been skepticism about mRNA -- it’s brand new and would it work?” Dr. Anthony Fauci said to CNN. “What we saw in the trials is there was no real safety concern, and the efficacy is quite impressive. We saw nearly identical results [with Pfizer and Moderna] and it almost really validates the mRNA platform.” There is one big problem with the Pfizer vaccine since it needs to be kept in extreme cold temperatures. It has to be in temp 75 and below. Most pharmacies and doctors’ offices can’t safely keep the medication.

Moderna

Moderna company data has indicated that the efficacy rate for their new vaccine is 94.5%. This would mean the U.S. has several vaccines with extremely favorable rates of success. In Moderna’s early trials little to no side effects occurred. Moderna plans to explore safety information closer before applying for US Food and Drug Administration authorization for their vaccine to be used. One thing on Moderna’s side is that it can be kept at minus 20 degrees. The Moderna vaccine can also be kept in the refrigerator for up to 30 days.

Johnson & Johnson

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine trial started September 23 with a plan to recruit 60,000 patients

November 26 – December 02, 2020

www.StyleMagazine.com

in eight countries, including the United States. In its statement, Johnson & Johnson said discussions with regulators around the world are “progressing.” Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN that vaccinations could begin this December with high risk groups getting the vaccines first. So what is next for America as we wait? Keep wearing your mask, social distancing, and pray that these vaccines work, are affordable, safe, and wipeout COVID-19.

Texas

Officials have a plan in place in Texas for when the vaccine becomes available in the Texas. In a press conference, Dr. David Persse said vaccines will be issued to healthcare workers who work with COVID patients and those in nursing homes first. Followed by those who are most vulnerable. He further indicated that the Houston Health Department will ensure communities that have an increased risk of being infected will be prioritize in getting the vaccine. “We’ve identified 333 Houston health care providers - COVID-19 vaccine providers. Another 250 within Harris County, are all registered to participate in the vaccination program,” Persse said during the press conference. Until the vaccine is available listen to the warning of Mayor Sylvester Tuner,”Remember, we don’t want to invite COVID-19 to the dinner table.” Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN that vaccinations could begin this December with high risk groups getting the vaccines first. So what is next for America as we wait? Keep wearing your mask, social distancing, and pray that these vaccines work, are affordable, safe, and wipeout COVID-19.

Woods has caddied for his son on a number of occasions. “I can’t tell you how excited I am to be playing with Charlie in our first official tournament together,” Woods said in a statement, reported by the PGA Tour. “It’s been great watching him progress as a junior golfer and it will be incredible playing as a team together in the PNC Championship.” The 44-year-old recently finished tied 38th at the Masters, carding one-under par. The duo will be joined by several other big-name golfers -- albeit not as big as the Woods family -- at the event in December. Sonoma County Through The Glass Of Jordan Vineyard & Winery By Reginald Dominique – www.StyleMagazine.com

E

veryone deserves a beacon of light who subsequently serves as an anchor for its community and during unprecedented times, no other sayings holds weight more than “not all heroes wear capes”. That hero is Jordan Vineyard & Winery and that cape is for the small Northern California town of Healdsburg, California. Since its establishment in 1972, family-owned Jordan Vineyard & Winery has always upheld its reputation throughout the community — not only as a thriving winery, but as a business who leads by example. From partnering with the Sonoma County Family Meal Disaster Relief Fund to the many initiatives of the John Jordan Foundation, giving back has always been deeply rooted in Jordan’s history. Which is why it is no surprise why Jordan Vineyard & Winery has

stepped to the fore front during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic and the raging wildfires of California.

About Jordan Vineyard & Winery:

Located in the Alexander Valley in Sonoma County, Jordan Vineyard & Winery is situated in the rolling hills encompassing 1,200 acres of land. Known for producing some of the finest Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Russian Valley Chardonnay, Jordan Vineyard & Winery continues to settle well with wine connoisseurs throughout the world. The chateau on every bottle of Jordan wine is the heart and soul of Jordan Vineyard & Winery. History says that Jordan was inspired by the great wine estate of France and the timeless connection between food, wine and hospitality. Founded by Tom and Sally Jordan and

now under the guidance of second-generation vintner John Jordan, Jordan Vineyard & Winery continues to innovate and elevate its elegant wines and culinary experiences with wine tasting, food pairings and outdoor culinary excursions.

Experience Jordan Vineyard & Winery:

Easily accessible to travelers, Jordan Vineyard & Winery is situated five miles north of the town of Healdsburg and 90 minutes north of San Francisco by car. The estate includes 120 acres of Bordeaux grape varieties, 16.5 acres of olive trees and 1-acre of gardens with fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, greenhouse, apiary and chicken coops. In addition to wildlife, many farm animals call Jordan Estate home. There is no denying that you can get outside and enjoy the fresh air and breathtaking views with a

Weekend Getaways

Sonoma County hiking adventure across the beautiful Jordan Estate. Enjoy a guided journey where you will grab fresh protein balls from the chateau’s chef and depart by foot on the four-mile hike on a private trail. This moderate hike passes through woods, meadows and sustainably farmed vineyards before a break at Jordan Vista Point, the highest hilltop of this peaceful 1,200-acre ranch, boasting a sweeping panorama of multiple wine regions and mountain ranges.

Paris on the Terrace:

Why travel to France when you can experience it without leaving California? With the new outdoor food and wine pairing experience at Jordan, sip the finest wines under the shade of oak trees and relax at your bistro table on the terrace with the Jordan Winery Chateau as a backdrop. With French music playing, enjoy the ambience while indulging in a Parisian bistro with a California twist. Our favorite you asks? The freshly baked bread with a drizzle of 2019 Jordan Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Jordan Garden crudité, and a salad of Jordan Garden greens. You can’t forget the charcuterie and cheese platter with house-marinated olives and spiced nuts, hors d’oeuvres du jour and dessert. Your winery lunch will be paired with the Jordan Cuvée by Champagne AR Lenoble, 2018 Jordan Chardonnay, 2016 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon and a special library vintage of Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon. In addition to the Jordan Hike & Paris on the Terrace, Jordan Vineyard & Winery boasts a ton of other activities that includes: Jordan’s handmade clay pottery classes that features clay from Jordan’s Alexander Valley estate and the New Chateau Block Vineyard Tasting that kicked off summer 2019.

About Healdsburg, California:

Located in Sonoma County and affectionally known as California’s Wine Country, the city of Healdsburg, CA with a population of just over 12,000 is known as a small tourist destination for those who want and love wine. Although, times have been challenging, there is no denying that the spirit of this resilient community is still intact. If you are ready to immerse yourself in every aspect of the Wine Country lifestyle, the charming town of Healdsburg has it all - excellent wine, farm-to-table cuisine, interesting history, art of all types, beautiful music, small-town charm, intriguing shopping, and pampering spas. Need a place to stay? Hotel Trio is one of the newest guest accommodations in the city offering travelers the best of both worlds: a stylish hub for exploring wine country and a warm setting to unwind and reconnect with family and friends. The warm, oversized accommodations with full kitchens invite guests to savor the casual elegance of wine country. You will find charming restaurants, wineries, tasting rooms, and boutiques just steps out the front door, along with complimentary shuttles to downtown and bicycle rentals for guests who want to explore the area on two wheels. Of course, you cannot do Healdsburg without enjoying the delicious dining that the city has to offer. One of our personal favorites was Barndiva. This farm-to-fork American eatery in stylish, barn-

like surrounds with a spacious garden patio serves up great meals sourced from farmers, ranchers and small batch purveyors who live and work in the magnificent food sheds throughout Healdsburg. From goat cheese croquettes and Alaskan halibut served with a spring pea risotto, their dishes show wonderful finesse and abundant creativity, yet never sacrificing balance or technique. With a thoughtfully constructed cocktail menu boasting an array of spirits, herbs and infusions, Barndiva offers lots to explore off the plate. And for post-meal perusing, there’s even an art gallery located right next door.

The Sonoma County Pivot:

In an unprecedented public health crisis and raging wildfires, the community of Sonoma County has done their best to come together and help each other. Millions of dollars have been donated to families throughout the region’s in effort to help families and business get back on their feet. The Sonoma County Grape Grower Foundation established a Wildfire Housing Support Fund, raising more than $2 million dollars to support Sonoma County farmworkers. SCGGF supported approximately 1,500 farmworkers and their families during these unprecedented disasters. As of this summer and fall of 2020, additional wildfires have forced thousands of Sonoma County residents to evacuate and/or halt work within the mandatory evacuation zones and the Sonoma County Grape Growers Foundation immediately reopened its resiliency fund. To learn more about SCGGF or donated, visit www. scggf.org. Also, there is the Sonoma Family Meal, a disaster-focused non-profit providing chef-made meals to those in need, which created the Restaurant Disaster Relief Fund — a new initiative to help restaurants remain open for disaster-relief cooking by providing

www.StyleMagazine.com

healthy, chef-made meals to those in desperate need of food. John Jordan, the owner of Jordan Winery, and the John Jordan Foundation made a $150,000 investment in the fund, and the non-profits are teaming up to begin a match drive to raise an additional $150,000. Founded in 2017, Sonoma Family Meal is a disaster-focused, 501c3 non-profit that provides safe, chef-made meals to those who need it most. Working with established non-profits, meals will go to seniors in peril, families, women’s emergency shelters and to underserved communities who are struggling through tragic and unprecedented emergencies. Learn more at sonomafamilymeal.org.

On a Personal Note:

What stood out the most during our trip to Sonoma County was the resilience of the community. Nothing says togetherness more than people of all walks of life being willing and able to help their neighbors. There is no denying that Healdsburg, CA is a thriving town with so much to offer. We would highly recommend a visit to if not at least one of the three wine regions, all of them. And of course, you cannot speak about Healdsburg without mentioning Jordan Vineyard & Winery. Thank you to Lisa Mattson and Kendall Busby of Jordan Vineyard & Winery for making experience one of a kind. With Texas’ wine regions ranking one of the best in the country behind California, it’s obvious that our connection with The Golden State is none-other than organic. So, we would highly recommend the Sonoma County experience as it truly is one of a kind
