ALOCAL: Houston Dazzles with Holiday Cheer at the Wortham Theater’s 34th Annual Tree Lighting
city known for its vibrant culture and unmatched celebrations—kicked off the holiday season in grand style at the 34th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at the Wortham Theater Center. This beloved tradition brought together thousands of Houstonians for a magical afternoon filled with music, laughter, and the undeniable warmth of the season.
The Star of the Show: A Tree to Remember
The highlight of the event? A stunning 30-foot Christmas tree illuminated by the one and only Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker. With a sprinkle of her magical charm, the tree sparkled to life with over 19,000 dazzling lights, creating an unforgettable moment that left attendees in awe. Surrounding the tree, the life-sized Gingerbread House drew children and adults alike with its whimsical, candy-coated design—a visual feast that brought smiles to all who saw it.
Music, Magic, and Memories
By Francis Page, Jr., Editor for www.StyleMagazine.com
Guests were treated to a spectacular lineup of performances, beginning with the soulful tunes of the Brooke Wyatt Trio, presented by DACAMERA. Adding to the festive ambiance, a quartet from the Mercury Chamber Orchestra serenaded the crowd with timeless holiday classics. The melodies created the perfect backdrop for families making memories that will last a lifetime.
For the young (and the young at heart), holiday arts and crafts workshops hosted by the Houston Ballet and DACAMERA were a hit. Children proudly showed off their glittering creations while savoring cookies and cocoa provided by the organizers.
And no holiday event is complete without a visit from Santa Claus himself! Santa spent the afternoon posing for keepsake photos, delighting guests of all ages with his hearty laugh and undeniable charm.
Sugar Plum Plaza: A Holiday Wonderland
The magic didn’t stop inside the Wortham. Just steps outside, Fish Plaza was transformed into the enchanting Sugar Plum Plaza. Families explored larger-thanlife interactive gift boxes and posed for photos inside a beautifully crafted Santa’s Sleigh. These vibrant holiday installations added an extra layer of joy to an already unforgettable event.
Sugar Plum Plaza is just one part of City Lights Downtown Holiday Magic, a collection of 12 holiday villages presented by Shell Energy. If you missed this tree lighting, don’t worry—there’s still time to experience the magic throughout the season!
A Celebration of Houston’s Cultural Richness
This event was more than just a tree lighting—it was a celebration of Houston’s rich artistic community. Leaders from the city’s most renowned arts organizations, including the Houston Grand Opera, Mercury Chamber Orchestra, DACAMERA, and the Houston Ballet, were on hand to welcome guests and share their holiday spirit.
Their message was clear: The holidays are a time to connect, create, and celebrate the magic of the performing arts, and Houston’s Theater District is the perfect place to do just that.
Bringing the Holidays Home
For those inspired by the event, the Wortham box office remained open throughout the celebration, offering tickets to upcoming performances. With shows ranging from timeless ballet classics to symphonic wonders, guests had the chance to give the gift of art and culture this season.
Wortham Shines Bright for the Holidays
This year’s Christmas Tree Lighting was not just an event—it was an experience that captured the heart and soul of Houston during the holidays. Whether you were there to marvel at the lights, groove to the music, or savor a moment with Santa, one thing is certain: the Wortham Theater Center delivered a holiday celebration like no other.
As the city continues to embrace the season, remember to explore the many events happening in the City Lights Downtown Holiday Magic series. From Sugar Plum Plaza to the Wortham and beyond, Houston’s holiday spirit is shining bright— don’t miss your chance to be part of it!
COMMENTARY BIPARTISANSHIP CANNOT BE A DIRTY WORD
By Ben Jealous, National Political Commentator
What is one thing – just one – you can agree on with someone on the opposite side of the political divide?
The late General Colin Powell once told me, “Figure that out and you can get a lot done. And as you win one victory together, you might just discover along the way that there’s something else you agree on.”
Our nation seems utterly divided. Many of the wounds that have been torn open in these last few election cycles are real and painful. But too much focus has been placed on further tearing open those wounds rather than healing them. One way we can heal them is simply by rolling up our sleeves and getting to work on the things we can agree on.
One thing Dr. Martin Luther King taught his lieutenants, several of whom trained me when I was a young organizer, is that if you are comfortable in your coalition, your coalition is too small.
We need unlikely allies and uncomfortably large coalitions. Coalitions of what can seem like strange bedfellows get things done. When I served as national president of the NAACP, we brought together prison guard unions, conservative governors, and Democratic legislators to dramatically shrink prison systems and allow people who served their sentences to regain their right to vote.
Bipartisanship itself can be a powerful tool and vehicle for progress. Here are a few examples, just from recent or ongoing environmental fights for legislation at the federal, state, and local levels.
We know that Donald Trump and his allies in Congress are close friends of the fossil fuel and other extractive industries. As such, one might assume Republican support for conservation efforts would be hard, if not impossible, to find. But one of the green movement’s great victories at the federal level during the first Trump administration was passage of the bipartisan Great American Outdoors Act. The bill provided permanent funding for important conservation and public recreation projects across the country and addressed a multi-billion-dollar
maintenance backlog in national parks and other public lands. At the time, then executive director of the Sierra Club, Michael Brune, called it “one of the most important conservation bills in a generation.” It passed in a closely divided US Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support, by a vote of 73-25.
We now hope to replicate that success with passage of the bipartisan EXPLORE Act during the current lame duck session or in the next Congress. That bill is a wide-ranging package of popular policies including the Outdoors for All Act and expansion of the Every Kid Outdoors program to make national parks and public lands accessible to more of America’s youth. One of my favorite current examples of a powerful multi-partisan, common ground-finding coalition at the state level is in the fight to stop a dangerous carbon capture pipeline in Iowa. A bill supported by that coalition to slow approval of land seizures for the project passed the Repub-
lican-majority Iowa House in March by a whopping 86-7 vote. That bill was unfortunately killed in the state Senate, by just a handful of powerful senators, before it could receive a floor vote. But coalition organizers are still fighting, and they believe the bill –or one similar to it – has the support to pass once they can get it to the Senate floor.
At the local level, I heard a story just this month that illustrates how, even when things seem bleak, there are still plenty of opportunities for progress. A Sierra Club volunteer leader receiving a lifetime achievement award for her work spoke to a crowd that was no doubt devastated by the results of the recent election. She told them she had, just the day prior, attended a board of supervisors meeting in her community where she and other community members convinced the body – composed entirely of Republicans except for one Democrat – to ban gasoline-powered leaf blowers. It was a reminder of how often straightforward local community organizing transcends politics.
This is just a small sampling of countless examples across the country of Americans who are not letting partisanship stand in their way as they work to make things better for their families and communities. The common ground is there if we bother to look for it. And look we must if we care about getting things done.
We do not have to agree on much for us to thrive together, in our families and communities, and as a country. For those of us fighting to get something done, we must remember: coalitions that include a variety of viewpoints are coalitions that ultimately win. General Powell’s words still ring true.

Randy Weber, the U.S. Congressman representing Friendswood, Texas, kicked off Thanksgiving week with a mission that speaks to the heart of history, culture, and resilience. The Juneteenth Museum Act of 2024, a landmark piece of legislation introduced by Weber, aims to establish a Smithsonian museum dedicated to the historic legacy of Juneteenth right in Galveston, Texas, where the momentous event originated.
“On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to enforce freedom as the law of the land,” Weber remarked passionately. “It was the moment when liberty echoed from Tennessee’s hills to Texas’ vast plains.”
Weber’s deep connection to Galveston is evident—not just as a congressman, but as a Texan with a profound respect for the past. Alongside his wife, Pearland schoolteacher Brenda Weber, he commemorates Juneteenth each year by visiting the Bishop’s Palace in Galveston, the iconic site where General Order No. 3 was read aloud, declaring the emancipation of enslaved individuals.
“The people are informed,” Weber recounted, quoting the historic proclamation, “that all slaves are free. This

involves absolute equality of personal rights and property rights.”
This statement, Weber noted, marks both the end of slavery in the United States and the beginning of a relentless march toward justice and equity—a journey that continues to this day.
By Burt Levine, Political Editor for www.StyleMagazine.com
Weber’s proposal directs the Smithsonian Institution to collaborate with Galveston and Texas officials to evaluate locations for the museum, ensuring that the initiative is both comprehensive and deeply rooted in community involvement. “Juneteenth is an indelible chapter of our nation’s history,” Weber explained. “Galveston is its birthplace, and it is only fitting that we honor its legacy here.”
A Legacy for Future Generations
Weber, a father of three and grandfather of eight, sees this project as a tribute to past generations and an investment in the future. “This museum is not just about showcasing history; it’s about ensur-
ing that future generations understand the resilience, freedom, and enduring spirit that Juneteenth represents,” he said. “We owe this to those who came before us and to the Greater Houston area, where the echoes of this moment still resonate.”
Weber’s leadership on this issue underscores his commitment to preserving history while fostering education and awareness. His personal dedication is matched by his bipartisan work in Congress, where he continues to champion causes that matter to his constituents.
Supporting Veterans: A Parallel Mission
In addition to his efforts for the Juneteenth Museum, Weber has also been a staunch advocate for veterans. Following Veterans Day, he highlighted the bipartisan success of the H.R. 8371 Elizabeth Dole
Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act.
“This legislation expands career opportunities for veterans, providing training for jobs starting at $66,000 annually, while addressing critical issues like veteran homelessness and improving elderly home healthcare,” Weber stated. “It’s not just policy—it’s about giving back to our local heroes who have given so much to us.”
For Weber, the fight for equality and the fight for veteran support are interconnected, symbolizing the broader struggle for fairness, dignity, and opportunity.
The Future of Galveston
Houston Style Magazine readers, with the Juneteenth Museum Act, Weber envisions Galveston as not just a destination for history buffs but a beacon of cultural education and national pride. “A Juneteenth museum in Galveston will not only commemorate this historic day but also serve as a reminder of the progress we’ve made and the work that still lies ahead,” he concluded.
As the holiday season begins, Weber’s efforts remind us of all of the importance of honoring history, embracing community, and paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.

Tips for a Greener Holiday
As Houstonians gather with loved ones, why not add a touch of sustainability to the season? Here are a few ways you can make Thanksgiving eco-friendly:
1.Plan Your Meals Thoughtfully: Cook only what you’ll need and enjoy leftovers creatively—turkey tacos, anyone?
2.Recycle Responsibly: Use your curbside recycling bin for plastics, paper, and aluminum. Avoid tossing greasy pizza boxes or used foil into the mix.
3.Compost Food Scraps: Turkey bones, potato peels, and wilted salad greens are perfect for composting, giving back to the Earth instead of the landfill.
4.Download HTX Collects App: Stay ahead of holiday collection changes with real-time alerts and reminders for your neighborhood.

Millions of Americans experience the discomfort of acid reflux, and let’s be honest—nothing ruins a big meal faster than that fiery sensation creeping up your chest. The good news? Relief is within reach with these 10 natural remedies that soothe your symptoms and support overall digestive health. Read on to discover your new acid reflux toolbox!
What Causes Acid Reflux?
Acid reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES)—a small muscle acting as a gate between your esophagus and stomach—relaxes at the wrong time. This allows stomach acid to backtrack into your esophagus, creating that unpleasant burning sensation. Over time, recurring acid reflux can evolve into gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), making it essential to manage symptoms proactively. Here’s how you can ditch the discomfort and restore balance to your digestive system.
10 Natural Remedies for Acid Reflux Relief
10. The Power of Posture
Sometimes, a simple change in position can work wonders. After meals, sit upright for at least 30 minutes to keep acid where it belongs—in your stomach. Avoid lying down or slouching after eating to minimize

Whether spread on artisan bread, glazed on roasted meats, or swirled into smoothies, Jam Vino elevates any dish with its rich flavors and luxurious textures.
Meet the Stars of the Table:
•Blackberry Merlot: A decadent fusion of sun-ripened blackberries and the bold body of Merlot wine, perfect for charcuterie boards and gourmet recipes.
•Raspberry Moscato: Light, floral, and fruity, this blend of raspberries and Moscato adds a surprising burst of flavor to both sweet and savory dishes.
•Strueberry Blanc: A harmonious blend of strawberries, blueberries, and Sauvignon Blanc, offering an elegant balance of sweetness and acidity.
A Legacy Rooted in "Calibama®" Cooking
Jam Vino is a heartfelt tribute to Chef Lorious’ “Calibama®” heritage—a seamless blend of Alabama’s Southern comfort food traditions and California’s wine country sophistication. Inspired by her family’s time-honored jam-making rituals, Chef Lorious created the first-ever wine-infused jam during a cooking demo at Williams-Sonoma. What started as a
family recipe twist for gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches became a crowd-pleasing sensation.
“Jam making, passed down from my Alabama family, is a Southern tradition I’ve cherished for years,” Chef Lorious shares. “When I combined those flavors with California wines, it felt like magic. It’s so rewarding to now share that magic with Walmart customers.”
The Chef Behind the Brand
Chef Lori Rogers, a.k.a. Chef Lorious, is more than a culinary genius. She’s a lifestyle brand, cookbook author, TV personality, and certified trailblazer in the food industry. Her signature cooking style—Calibama Cooking®—celebrates the fusion of Southern and West Coast cuisines, creating recipes that are as warm and inviting as her personality.
From regular appearances on “Good Morning Texas” and “Good Day DC” to her popular cookbook Calibama Cooking: Classic & Contemporary Comfort Food, Chef Lorious inspires home cooks to embrace creativity and authenticity in the kitchen.

reflux episodes.
9. Chew Sugar-Free Gum
Pop a piece of sugar-free gum after meals. Chewing gum increases saliva production, which can help neutralize acid and wash it back into your stomach. It’s a quick, lowcost fix that works like a charm!
8. Take a Bite of Licorice
Licorice root isn’t just for candy lovers. This natural remedy has stomach-soothing properties that address the root causes of acid reflux. Look for DGL (deglycyrrhizinated) licorice supplements to avoid potential side effects like elevated blood pressure.
7. Try Baking Soda
For instant relief, mix ½ teaspoon of baking soda with a glass of water. This alkalizing solution neutralizes stomach acid and eases discomfort. However, use it sparingly, as
excessive sodium isn’t ideal for long-term health.
6. A Drop of Slippery Elm
This age-old herbal remedy works wonders for acid reflux. Mix 2 tablespoons of slippery elm powder with water to create a soothing gel that coats and protects your stomach lining. It’s a gentle and natural way to keep reflux at bay.
5. Aloe Vera: Not Just for Sunburns
Aloe vera isn’t just a skin savior—it’s a digestive powerhouse. Drinking ¼ to ½ cup of aloe vera juice (decolorized and purified) before meals can help reduce inflammation and promote healing. Remember, moderation is key, as excessive amounts may have laxative effects.
4. A Spoonful of Yellow Mustard
This pantry staple does more than spice up sandwiches. Thanks to its alkalizing properties, 1 teaspoon of yellow mustard can neutralize stomach acid during heartburn episodes. It’s quick, effective, and always within reach.
3. Fresh Ginger Root
A culinary favorite with anti-inflammatory superpowers, ginger root is a must-have for acid reflux relief. Grate fresh ginger into your tea, smoothie, or meals to calm your digestive

system. Aim for 1 teaspoon daily for best results.
2. Probiotics for Digestive Harmony
Probiotics are your gut’s best friend. By supporting healthy bacteria, they help balance your digestive system and reduce acid reflux triggers. Add yogurt, kefir, or a high-quality probiotic supplement to your routine for long-term benefits.
1. Bananas and Apples: Nature’s Antacid
Both bananas and apples are gentle on your stomach and rich in natural antacids. Keep them ripe and ready for snacking when acid reflux strikes. Their soothing properties make them a go-to remedy for everyday relief.
Final Thoughts: Listen to Your Gut!
Houston Style Magazine readers, while these remedies can work wonders, remember that lifestyle changes are equally important. Avoid trigger foods (spicy, fried, or acidic options), eat smaller meals, and stay active. If symptoms persist, consult with a healthcare professional to rule out underlying conditions and create a personalized treatment plan.

tion and Storytelling
While Lamar has long been known for his introspective and innovative approach, GNX takes collaboration to a new level. The 12-track album features appearances from SZA on the soulful track “Luther” and a lively reimagining of Debbie Deb’s “When I Hear Music” on “Squabble Up.” The most surprising and heartwarming addition, however, is the inclusion of mariachi singer Deyra Barrera, whose vocals lend a stirring depth to three tracks, including the Tupac tribute “Reincarnated” and the SZA-assisted closer, “Gloria.”
Barrera’s journey to GNX is a story of serendipity and talent. Spotted by Lamar at a Dodgers game where she performed a tribute to the late Fernando Valenzuela, Barrera’s powerful voice captured Lamar’s attention. In her words, “This all happened so quickly for me. Lamar is a genius, a maestro. Everything he makes is magic.”
The collaboration marks a high point in Barrera’s decades-long career, which has seen her grace everything from small Los
Angeles restaurants to international singing competitions. Barrera’s raw talent, resilience, and humble roots in Sonora, Mexico, shine brightly through her contributions to GNX. “I believe in angels,” she shared.
“And Lamar is one for me.”
