Texas Republicans Break Ranks: A Powerful Coalition Rises To Back Allred and Oust Ted Cruz

In an unexpected but powerful twist, Texas politics is witnessing a new wave of bipartisan unity with the formation of “Republicans for Allred,” a coalition led by prominent GOP figures who are throwing their weight behind Democratic Congressman Colin Allred in his campaign to unseat Senator Ted Cruz. The coalition, co-chaired by former Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger and former State Representative Jason Villalba, brings together a wide array of Republican leaders who believe that Allred’s vision for Texas transcends party lines.

Congressman Allred’s candidacy has stirred up excitement, especially with notable Republicans like Kinzinger openly praising his commitment to principle. As Kinzinger told The Houston Chronicle , “If the Democratic Party decided someday to go off the rails, similar to what the GOP did, I guarantee you, Colin Allred would be like Adam Kinzinger or Liz Cheney, saying this can’t happen.” His words reflect a broader sentiment—one that suggests Texans are ready for change, one based on values, integrity, and putting state interest’s above personal ambition.

Putting Differences Asid for a Greater Cause

Kinzinger’s sentiment was echoed by several others in the GOP, underscoring that this movement isn’t merely symbolic. It represents a serious effort to rally disenchanted Republicans around a leader who believes in genuine service to the state. As Kinzinger told The Texas Tribune, “This is a serious effort to reach out to Republicans. You’re going to see other folks come out and say, ‘look, we’re going to put slight differences aside because we actually believe in this country and what it stands for like Colin does, unlike Ted Cruz.’”

But perhaps the most compelling endorsement came from former State Representative Todd Smith, who made a striking statement about the future of American democracy.

“I fully understand the actual and inevitable harm to our democracy caused by election denialism and demagoguing,” Smith told Lonestar Live. “Accordingly, and for many reasons, it is clear to me that Colin Allred is the right person to be our next Senator.”

Texans Deserve a Leader Who Puts People First

What makes Allred’s campaign stand out is his consistent focus on the everyday issues that matter to Texans. As a Dallas native raised by a single mother, Allred’s story resonates with many. A former NFL linebacker turned civil rights attorney; Allred has demonstrated his commitment to public service through bipartisan legislative victories. Over his years in Congress, Allred has shown an ability to work across party lines—an attribute that earned him the title of the “most bipartisan member of the Texas Congressional Delegation.”

Former Dallas Mayor and Congressman Steve Bartlett added to the chorus of Republican praise, stating, “Colin Allred has the character to take us forward and will be the kind of leader Texans need in the Senate. I trust Colin to respect our liberties, our constitution, and our shared values as Americans. Texans know that Colin would never abandon our state.”

Bridging the Divide: A Campaign for All Texans

Allred’s bipartisan appeal is rooted in his legislative achievements, including the passage of key laws such as the CHIPS and Science Act, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which are bringing billions of dollars to Texas for new projects, job creation, and community safety. His work alongside Republican business leaders like El Paso’s Woody Hunt on expanding work permits is a clear testament to his commitment to improving the lives of all Texans, regardless of party affiliation.

Former State Representative Jason Villalba, a self-described “Reagan Republican,” emphasized that this isn’t about abandoning Republican ideals, but about realigning with the interests of ordinary Texans. “Our current Senator seems to be more focused on his own ambition or serving the interests of extremists than helping ordinary Texans like me,” Villalba said. “Colin Allred has served North Texas with dignity, respect, and a servant’s heart. He cares about the kitchen table issues that are important to me and my family. He will never put his own personal gain above Texas.”

A Coalition with Purpose

The Republicans for Allred coalition is more than a footnote in Texas’s political history; it’s a full-fledged movement. Co-chaired by Kinzinger and Villalba, the coalition includes respected figures such as former Dallas Mayor Steve Bartlett, former State Representatives Todd Smith and Bennett Ratliff, and Marc Sumerlin, the former Deputy Director of the National Economic Council under President George W. Bush. Together, they are a testament to the growing realization that Texas needs a Senator who puts the people first—someone who is willing to bridge divides and offer practical, effective leadership. Allred’s candidacy is not just a challenge to Ted Cruz’s incumbency; it’s a call for a new political dynamic in Texas. The endorsements of these GOP stalwarts are a signal that Texans are ready for a leader who prioritizes unity, bipartisanship, and tangible results over rhetoric and extremism.

COMMENTARY THE PLASTICS INSIDE OF YOU RIGHT NOW

There you are reading this indoors, there is a good chance there are hundreds of invisible plastic particles floating around in the room you are in. There is also a good chance you may be breathing some of them in.

And we are not just breathing in plastic pollution. We are eating it and drinking it. To add insult to injury, much of that plastic pollution came from items like plastic water bottles that consumers thought would be recycled.

The world’s largest producer of plastic polymers for single-use plastics is ExxonMobil. Right now, Attorney General Rob Bonta of California of California, along with the Sierra Club and other environmental groups, is suing ExxonMobil for their years-long campaign of deception about the recyclability of plastic products.

In discussing the suit, Attorney General Bonta told a story of a 14-year old who “was just distraught over the fact that all of the plastic items that she carefully selected to make sure they have the chasing arrows on it and then make sure that after she used it, she placed it thoughtfully and diligently in the blue container for recycling – that 95 percent of the time, that item was not recycled.”

The world produces about 430 million tons of plastic each year. Much of that is single-use plastic that ends up in the environment. About 22 million pounds of plastic enter the Great Lakes alone each year, with half of it going into Lake Michigan. And the plastic-contaminated water from lakes, rivers, and streams ends up in our drinking water and our oceans. Globally, about 12 million tons of plastic enter our oceans each year. That is a garbage truck worth of plastic every minute.

Plastics do not decompose. They just break down into smaller and smaller

pieces of plastic, down to tiny particles called microplastics and nanoplastics.

As a result, microplastics are everywhere and in everything. The plastic bags and bottles that find their way into landfills and waterways eventually become microplastics. Microplastics are also tiny enough to be airborne.

Dr. Sherri A. Mason is a leader in plastic pollution research who has called attention to freshwater contamination from microplastics. She has pointed out, “Because we find plastic pollution within fresh water throughout the planet, it’s not surprising that we find it in our tap water. In 2017 we examined 159 samples of tap water collected from 14 different countries. Eighty-eight percent of these samples showed evidence of microplastic contamination, with an average of 5.5 particles per liter. Almost all (98 percent) of these particles were microfibers, which

suggests that air is the primary source of contamination.”

Plastics get into our waterways in a variety of ways – “microbeads” in shampoos and laundry detergents, small pellets used in pre-production manufacturing known as “nurdles,” and more ways. Nurdles are a major source of the microplastic contamination in the Great Lakes because many manufacturing facilities in the region use them. All that plastic then enters the food chain. One way is that it breaks down into tiny plastic grains that are mistaken as algae and microplankton by fish.

Over the past four years studies have found microplastics in human placentas, breast milk, and liver. More recent research over the past year has now found them in people’s lungs, testicles and brains.

The studies that found micro-

plastics present in testicles found them in every single sample analyzed. Scientists think it could be linked to downward trends in sperm counts and fertility.

The microplastics found in human brains were found in the olfactory bulb, suggesting they could be getting inhaled through the nose. Phoebe Stapleton, a professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Rutgers University, told CNN, “I really do think that plastics are going to be in every place in the body that we look. This is just more evidence.”

We know plastic contamination is toxic. Plastic is made from petrochemicals that, in addition to reproductive health issues, can cause cancer, endocrine disruption, neurological disorders, immune disorders, and more.

As our awareness of plastic contamination in every facet of our lives and part of our bodies grows, let us remember Big Oil produces petrochemicals behind plastics. So add that to the list of ways – in addition to pollution, climate change, and the megastorms the climate crisis produces – the fossil fuel industry is taking a disastrous toll on our health. The lawsuit to hold ExxonMobil accountable is a good start in addressing the problem, but we also need to address the microplastic contamination that is already so prevalent. And we need to change and reduce our use of plastics.

As the countdown to Election Day begins, the buzz around Texas politics is heating up, and Colin Allred is at the center of it. The Dallas Democrat and former NFL linebacker is making waves across the Lone Star State as he challenges Senator Ted Cruz, the Republican incumbent, in a race that is shaping up to be one of the tightest Senate contests in recent history. With just weeks left before voters head to the polls, Allred is gaining momentum, and it seems the political winds are shifting.

For three decades, Texas Democrats have struggled to gain significant ground in the state's political arena, particularly in southeast Texas. But this year feels different. Pollsters are watching closely as the Vice President Kamala Harris and Colin Allred ticket ignites enthusiasm in a way not seen since the 90s. Harris County, home to America’s second-longest ballot after Los Angeles, is buzzing with energy as voters are gearing up to cast their ballots for everything from President and Senate to county and local offices. It’s a historic election season, one that could reshape the future of Texas politics.

Early Voting Kicks Off Across Texas

On Monday, October 21st, 88 Early Voting polls will open across Harris

STATE: COLIN ALLRED SURGES AGAINST CRUZ IN FINAL WEEKS OF TEXAS SENATE RACE

County, and voters will have until Friday, November 1 to make their voices heard before the official November 5 Election Day.

This year’s ballot is packed with critical races, from the Presidential contest to the battle for the U.S. Senate, State House, State Senate, and a wide range of judicial and county-level offices that impact the daily lives of Texans.

The excitement isn't just about the big-ticket races; it's the diversity of candidates running for office that has voters fired up. Across Harris and Fort Bend County, African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans are stepping up to the plate in unprecedented numbers. Annette Ramirez, the Tax Collector for Aldine ISD, is running

for Harris County Tax Assessor Collector, while Christine Weems, a proud daughter of Vietnamese immigrants, is vying for a spot on the Texas Supreme Court. Weems and others are part of a growing wave of candidates who are challenging the status quo and offering a new vision for the future of Texas.

A First for Everything: Allred, Anyiam, and Harris

This year could see many firsts in Texas, including the potential election of the state’s first African American U.S. Senator in Colin Allred. In a race that’s tighter than anyone could have predicted, Allred is now neck-and-neck with Cruz, giving Texas Democrats their best shot in

decades to unseat a Republican senator. But Allred isn’t the only one making history. Voters could also elect Chika Anyiam, the first African American Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Judge, and Harris County is on the verge of helping make Kamala Harris the nation’s first African American and Asian American woman President.

Hispanic voter registration is at an all-time high, spurred on by heated debates over immigration—particularly in Houston, the first major city north of the Mexican border. Meanwhile, Jewish and Muslim voters are keeping a close eye on foreign policy as tensions in the Middle East escalate.

The Cruz Conundrum

As Allred’s star rises, Senator Ted Cruz finds himself in an unfamiliar position—on the defensive. On Friday, October 4, Cruz kicked off his Texas bus tour in Fort Bend County, proclaiming, "As Fort Bend County goes—so goes Texas, and so goes America." The senator, now facing what might be his toughest challenge yet, made a passionate plea to voters, urging them to help keep Texas red.

Fort Bend County Can’t Be Fooled: Judge Tameika Carter’s Critics Miss the Mark

In a county as diverse and forward-thinking as Fort Bend, voters can see through thinly veiled attempts to discredit community leaders like Judge Tameika Carter – the presiding Judge of the 400th District Court. Recent attacks on her character and comments have taken an underhanded turn, with right-leaning publications like the Fort Bend Herald and Covering Katy attempting to stoke division using racial microaggressions and reverse-racial undertones. But here’s the thing: Fort Bend voters are far too smart to be swayed by such weak tactics.

Judge Tameika Carter, a trailblazing African American Democrat, has consistently served Fort Bend County with integrity and purpose. When she spoke at a Missouri City candidate forum, her comments about the Republican Party’s stance on crime struck a chord with many in the audience—some applauded while others were stunned. She pointed out a truth that resonates within communities of color across the nation: policies billed as "tough on crime" too often translate to disproportionately locking up Black and Brown individuals. This is not hyperbole. This is a reality that Judge Carter, presiding over the Texas 400th District Court, witnesses firsthand.

It’s ironic that publications aiming

to sensationalize Carter’s remarks failed to reach out to her for comment before running their articles. In journalism, that’s a big nono—yet they’re willing to bypass ethics in favor of generating divisive narratives. Their one-sided stories appear crafted to stir emotions and distract voters from the real issues at hand.

What’s even more concerning is

the weaponization of race to score cheap political points. For publications to suggest that Carter’s critique of criminal justice policies is somehow “divisive” or “inflammatory” is laughable. These outlets conveniently ignore the historical and systemic inequities baked into our justice system; the very same system Judge Carter is working to make more just. Meanwhile, they fail to

acknowledge their own role in perpetuating these inequalities by pushing reverse-racial narratives.

Let’s be clear: The multicultural voters of Fort Bend County are not fooled. They understand the dynamics of race and justice in America all too well. Fort Bend is one of the most diverse counties in the country, with people of all backgrounds coming together to create a thriving, inclusive community. Voters here are savvy—they know when someone is trying to pull the wool over their eyes.

At the core of this recent criticism is a fear of change. Critics of Judge Carter and others like her know that a more inclusive justice system threatens the status quo. Fort Bend voters, however, are ready for that change. They want leaders like Judge Carter who speak truth to power, leaders who aren’t afraid to call out policies that disproportionately impact communities of color.

And let’s not forget, Judge Carter is no stranger to fighting for her community. As the Local Administrative District Judge, Judge Tameika Carter has been a steadfast advocate for justice.

TPOLITICS: JACK SMITH’S PURSUIT – TRUMP’S LIES, GIULIANI’S FALL, AND THE BATTLE FOR AMERICA’S FUTURE

he relentless quest for truth has found a worthy champion in Special Counsel Jack Smith, the man tasked with unraveling Donald Trump’s sprawling effort to overturn the 2020 election. The latest revelations, detailed in a wide-ranging legal brief, paint a damning portrait of Trump’s behavior and Rudy Giuliani’s role in spreading knowingly false claims of election fraud.

As Jack Smith’s investigation continues, the once-respected Rudy Giuliani finds himself inextricably linked to Trump’s scheme—becoming the face of a failed and dishonest campaign that shook the very core of American democracy. Giuliani’s willingness to lie for Trump, according to Smith, speaks volumes about the desperation of Trump’s inner circle and the lengths they were willing to go to stay in power.

Trump’s Gamble with Giuliani Following the 2020 election, Donald Trump found himself at a crossroads. His legal team, backed by reality and evidence, told him the odds of winning were slim. Faced with the harsh truth, Trump took a different path. On November 13, 2020, he fired his attorneys and brought in Giuliani, the one man willing to spread baseless

claims of election fraud. It was Giuliani who Trump believed could falsely claim victory—and Smith’s investigation alleges that Trump knew full well these claims were groundless.

In a bombshell filing, Smith alleges that Trump and his allies “invented statistics out of whole cloth.” Giuliani, once hailed for his leadership during 9/11, became the frontman for a campaign fu-

eled by falsehoods, making and remaking fraudulent claims about voter fraud in Arizona and other swing states. At one point, Trump and his team changed their fraudulent numbers from 36,000 noncitizens casting ballots in Arizona to hundreds of thousands, only to revise the figure once again. The numbers may have been fabricated, but Giuliani’s commitment to the lie was unwavering.

Giuliani’s Downward Spiral

Once at the height of his career, Rudy Giuliani’s fall from grace has been nothing short of tragic. His daughter, Caroline Giuliani, has openly lamented how her father’s association with Trump has irreparably damaged his life and career. "Trump took my dad from me," she has said, highlighting the personal toll that comes with standing by the former president. And while Giuliani might have believed his loyalty to Trump would secure his legacy, he’s been left to shoulder the blame for the lies Trump concocted.

Giuliani’s willingness to push Trump’s false election claims has now landed him in legal hot water, with Jack Smith’s team outlining how deeply Giuliani was embedded in Trump’s fraudulent scheme.

In fact, Smith’s filing shows that Trump, ever the businessman, promised to pay Giuliani only if they won the post-election cases. And yet, Trump still owes Giuliani $2 million—a debt that symbolizes not only broken financial promises but the larger moral bankruptcy of the entire operation.

TLOCAL : H-E-B STEPS UP BIG WITH $500K DONATION AND TRUCKLOADS OF GOODS FOR HURRICANE HELENE RELIEF EFFORTS

he communities along the East Coast grapple with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene’s devastating sweep, one company is once again standing tall in times of crisis: H-E-B. Proving why they remain one of Texas' most cherished brands, H-E-B is donating a whopping $500,000 and sending several truckloads filled with essential goods to aid the recovery. In true H-E-B spirit, this grocery giant isn’t just feeding people’s stomachs but feeding hope in the heart of hard-hit areas.

Hurricane Helene, which hit the Southeast as a Category 4 storm, wreaked havoc from Florida up to the Appalachian Mountains. Leaving a trail of destruction, it disrupted lives, knocked out power, and left countless families in need. But, while most of us were still trying to comprehend the scope of the disaster, H-E-B was already in action, mobilizing its resources to provide immediate relief. Talk about being prepared!

In a statement, H-E-B em-

phasized their close collaboration with Feeding America and local nonprofits, ensuring that the aid they deliver goes exactly where it’s needed. But the $500K isn’t just about writing a check—H-E-B is putting boots (and trucks) on the ground. Expect to see shelf-stable food, water, baby items, and other essentials making their way to affected communities. It’s a massive undertaking, but not unfamiliar for H-E-B. After all, the grocer is no stranger to disaster relief efforts.

This isn't H-E-B’s first rodeo with disaster response. The company quickly rose to the oc-

casion after Hurricane Beryl this summer, feeding Houston residents after the storm left the city sweltering without power for days.

Houstonians likely remember the hot meals and discounted frozen foods—small gestures that made a big difference. And who could forget Winter Storm Uri in 2021, when the Texas freeze left the state in dire straits? While many scrambled to respond, H-E-B was already moving, sending truckloads of food to communities in need, reinforcing their reputation as the goto grocery for both meals and morale in hard times.

Now, with the federal government’s aid for Hurricane Helene survivors surpassing $210 million and FEMA preparing for a potential second punch from Hurricane Milton brewing in the Gulf, H-E-B remains committed to seeing this through. They’re even working with their suppliers to ensure that more help is on the way. Hurricane season may have come out swinging, but H-E-B’s spirit of giving is helping swing back, one truckload at a time.

Houston Style Magazine readers, while FEMA coordinates on a federal level, and Florida prepares for a possible dual disaster as Milton threatens, H-E-B’s swift and steadfast response reminds us that no act is too big when a community stands united. As they say at H-E-B, "Here, everything’s better," and in the wake of such storms, we’re reminded that when it comes to community support, few do it better than H-E-B!

TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY TRIUMPHS WITH HOMECOMING 2024:

A CELEBRATION OF LEGACY, COMMUNITY, AND UNSTOPPABLE PARTNERSHIPS

As the dust settles from the remarkable Texas Southern University (TSU) Homecoming 2024 festivities, it’s clear that this year's event wasn’t just about the celebration—it was about honoring traditions, strengthening community ties, and driving forward the legacy of excellence TSU has built over nearly a century. Aptly titled H.O.T. 97: Honoring Our Traditions –Countdown to 100, the Homecoming brought together students, alumni, and partners in a vibrant weekend that will be remembered for years to come. And at the heart of it all? Groundbreaking partnerships that are setting new standards for student success and community engagement.

The Beat of Progress: Interscope Records’ $100,000 Investment Hits High Notes

In true TSU fashion, Homecoming 2024 took things to the next level with Interscope Records stepping in to power the event’s creative engine. The label’s impres-

sive $100,000 investment was much more than a sponsorship—it was a commitment to fueling the next generation of music and mass media innovators on TSU’s campus. This monumental contribution not only supported the Homecoming festivities but also birthed the inaugural "Homecoming Szn Vol. 1" Compilation, a collection of beats and tracks that celebrated TSU’s rich musical history alongside other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

What makes this partnership truly extraordinary is the long-lasting impact it will have on TSU’s Mass Communication students. With a profit-sharing model in place for exclusive Interscope x TSU merchandise,

these students now have a direct line to real-world experience and financial support. This isn’t just about making music—it’s about making moves, and TSU students are already charting the course for a bright future.

Women of Power: Uncle Funky’s Daughter Launches the MPoWR Her Grant Another standout moment from Homecoming 2024 was the unveiling of the MPoWR Her Grant, made possible by Uncle Funky’s Daughter, a beloved natural hair care brand that champions sustainability and empowerment. With a generous $50,000 commitment, the grant is designed to uplift African American female students pursuing entrepreneurial dreams.

This grant, aligned with TSU’s mission of cultivating leadership, provides a critical boost to female entrepreneurs within the university’s startup incubator. Eligible students—those maintaining a 2.75 GPA and full-time status—now have access to vital resources that will help turn their business dreams into reality. Uncle Funky’s Daughter isn’t just providing funds; they’re fostering a future filled with confident, successful women of color who are ready to break barriers.

Knowing the facts about domestic violence, recognizing the predictable patterns and talking about it can help end the cycle of domestic violence and abuse.

CONGRESSMAN AL GREEN PUSHES FOR URGENT ACTION ON DANGEROUS

A COMMUNITY'S CALL FOR SAFETY

The morning of October 8, 2024, marked a pivotal moment for the Almeda Post Office and its surrounding community. Congressman Al Green (TX-09), alongside local leaders and concerned constituents, held a press conference that put a spotlight on an issue that's been frustrating his district for over a year—dangerous potholes in the post office's parking lot. What began as a simple request for infrastructure repairs has now evolved into a rallying cry for the community’s safety and well-being.

With the backing of figures like Dorothy Henson, a local resident who nearly had a dangerous fall in the parking lot, and Bishop Wyman Webster of Hiram Clarke Missionary Baptist Church, the press conference sought to raise awareness and push for tangible action from the United States Postal Service (USPS). After months of unfulfilled promises from USPS regarding repairs, Congressman Green is amplifying the community’s voice, demanding urgent fixes for the potentially hazardous conditions.

Potholes in Plain Sight: A Long Overdue Fix

The potholes in the Almeda Post Office parking lot have been more than an inconvenience; they’ve become a public safety hazard. Congressman Green’s involvement began when Dorothy Henson brought the issue to his attention. After nearly falling due to the uneven and cratered pavement, Henson

reached out for help, sparking a series of communications between Green’s office and USPS that began on February 8, 2023.

Despite USPS initially acknowledging the need for repairs and setting an estimated timeline for completion, the parking lot remains in the same hazardous condition over a year later. Congressman Green's persistence has been met with empty promises, the most recent being a letter in May 2024 claiming that repairs would be completed within 60 days. Yet, no action has been taken to date. The Power of Community: Pressing for Immediate Action

Standing in front of the Hiram Clarke Missionary Baptist Church, adjacent to the problematic post office, Green addressed a crowd that included Homer Clark,

President of the South Houston Concerned Citizens Coalition, and George Anderson, Vice Chair of the Hiram Clarke/Fort Bend Redevelopment Authority. Their message was unified and clear: the time for waiting is over.

Green expressed his deep frustration with the USPS’s lack of urgency, stating, "I am deeply concerned about the lack of action by the United States Postal Service to repair these potentially dangerous potholes. Our community deserves better, and it's unacceptable that after so many months of waiting, no resolution has been reached. The safety of our constituents cannot be compromised."

nity leaders in attendance echoed Green’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of making the post office accessible and safe for all. For George Anderson, the failure to repair the parking lot is not just a USPS problem but a reflection of how national institutions should be held accountable for ensuring the safety of the communities they serve. Taking the Fight to Washington

This isn’t where the story ends. Congressman Green’s next step is to take the fight directly to Washington, D.C.. He has formally requested a meeting with Peter Pastre, the USPS Vice President of Government Relations and Public Policy, to address the matter personally and push for immediate action.

The press conference wasn’t just an opportunity to raise awareness; it was a demand for immediate action. The commu-

On Thursday, October 3, 2024 , an inspiring gathering of advocates, leaders, and changemakers convened at Houston’s Bistro Menil for a significant occasion—the Latina Equal Pay Day Dinner. Hosted by Chef Greg Martin in his celebrated restaurant, the event combined fine dining with a powerful message: it’s time to close the wage gap that leaves Latinas earning only 55 cents to the dollar compared to white, non-Hispanic men

Latina Equal Pay Day marks the time it takes for the average Latina to match the earnings of her male counterparts from the previous year. While we recognize the strides Latinas have made in the workforce, the fact remains: Latinas must work nearly 23 months to earn what white men earn in 12. And we say, enough is enough—¡Págame!

The Voice Behind the Movement: Anjelica Cazares

The evening’s host, Anjelica Cazares , founder of the Latina Leadership Podcast, set the tone with her fiery passion and commitment to equity. A dynamic entrepreneur, Cazares co-founded Big Oak Tree Media and Market Street Consultants, two firms that serve diverse, underrepresented

communities. But her advocacy doesn’t stop there—through her podcast and annual Latina Equal Pay Day events, she has become a leading voice for Latina empowerment, speaking out for fair wages, educational access, and leadership opportunities.

“The Latina Leadership Podcast isn’t just a space for discussion—it’s a movement,” Cazares declared. “We tackle the real issues Latinas face, from the classroom to the boardroom. Whether it’s mental health, entrepreneurship, or equal pay, we’re here to lift each other up.”

Building a Powerful Support System Through Shared Success and Inspiration

This year’s invitation-only dinner brought together a remarkable group of Latina leaders from diverse fields, including consulting, public relations, marketing, and television. These inspiring women gathered to foster connection, discuss impactful issues, and celebrate shared successes. As host Cazares observed, “We are grateful to have hosted such an empowering and inspiring group of women, and it was incredible to witness the meaningful conversations that took place. As women, it is crucial for us to support one another, and last night was proof of what a

support system looks like when we come together to celebrate and uplift each other.”

The evening underscored the importance of solidarity and support among Latina professionals, creating a space where powerful ideas and shared visions could flourish.

The Unfinished Fight for Fair Wages

The wage gap is not just a statistic but a harsh reality affecting millions of Latinas and their families, leaving many vulnerable to poverty. Despite their growing presence in the workforce, Latinas face the largest wage gaps among women, which impacts entire communities. Closing this gap is crucial for economic growth and family stability.

Latina Entrepreneurship Conference

The momentum continues on October 17 with the Latina Entrepreneurship Conference in Houston. This event aims to empower Latina entrepreneurs through workshops and networking opportunities. Cazares expressed gratitude for the support of businesses interested in building a future where Latinas thrive as leaders.

A Call to Action

As we reflect on Latina Equal Pay Day, the message is clear: achieving wage parity is essential for justice. From Cazares’ advocacy to support from companies like Comcast, Walmart, Kroger, and more, the movement for Latina equality is growing— but it needs everyone’s involvement.

We call on our Houston Style Magazine readers to join this movement, support Latina entrepreneurs, and vote for equity at every level. Together, we can build a brighter future where Latinas receive the recognition and compensation they deserve.

Hurricane Milton: A Massive Storm Threatens Florida Gulf Coast – Could Be One of the Worst in History!

Hold onto your hats, folks— Hurricane Milton is no ordinary storm. This colossal Category 5 behemoth, now packing winds of up to 180 mph, is hurtling toward Florida’s Gulf Coast, poised to become one of the most destructive hurricanes on record. Experts are sounding the alarm as residents brace for what could be an unprecedented catastrophe. For the residents of Tampa Bay, Milton could mark the storm of the century. The last time Tampa took a direct hit was in 1921, and trust us, Milton's packing more punch than Florida has seen in a hundred years.

A Force to Be Reckoned With From the moment it exploded into a Category 5, Hurricane Milton has been flexing its meteorological muscles. According to the National Hurricane Center, Milton’s strength has doubled in less than 24 hours—a whopping 90 mph increase in wind speed since early Monday morning! With winds now at 180 mph, it’s officially one of the fastest-growing storms in modern

history.

And if that’s not terrifying enough, forecasters predict Milton will push a wall of water up to 15 feet above normal tides, potentially swallowing entire neighborhoods in the low-lying Tampa Bay region. While this sounds like a nightmare straight out of a disaster movie, it's an all-too-real scenario brewing in Florida.

Will Tampa Bay Go Under?

Meteorologist Bryan Norcross, who’s seen his fair share of

hurricane disasters, is calling this one a potential record-breaker. He warns that the west coast of Florida, particularly the densely populated Tampa Bay area, could go underwater if the storm stays on its current path. Even if we dare to hope that Milton weakens before landfall, it’s likely to expand in size— ensuring that no part of the Florida Gulf Coast is left untouched. Norcross’s dire words: “Unless we get extremely lucky, Milton will be one of the biggest hurricane disasters in history.”

Let’s not sugarcoat it— Florida is in for a rough ride. The Great Evacuation

With the possibility of mass flooding and widespread destruction, evacuation efforts are already in full swing. Pinellas County’s emergency management officials aren’t wasting any time—evacuating everyone in zones A, B, and C, along with mobile home residents. Emergency Director Cathie Perkins is urging folks to pack up and get out now, saying, "If you're in Pinellas County, don't wait until it's too late—leave now."

Meanwhile, medical facilities throughout the state are scrambling to evacuate vulnerable patients. As of Monday, 500 to 600 ambulances were actively transporting patients from hospitals and nursing homes across the greater Tampa Bay area.

In the world of football, there’s no greater feeling than clutching victory from the jaws of defeat—especially when it comes down to the final two seconds. The Houston Texans delivered a thrilling finish against the Buffalo Bills in Week 5, etching a memorable moment in franchise history. It was a victory not only shaped by talent but by sheer grit, determination, and a dash of dramatic flair.

DeMeco Ryans’ Strategy: A Winning Collective Effort

Head Coach DeMeco Ryans knew the challenge ahead: Josh Allen, the Bills' dynamic quarterback, is a force to be reckoned with. To limit his offensive prowess, Ryans put together a gameplan that demanded a collective effort from the Texans' defense. "Limiting Josh, who is a great player, took a valiant effort from everybody," Ryans noted post-game. The Texans’ defense, spearheaded by the D-line and their unwavering back-end coverage, put immense pressure on Allen. The key?

Keeping him contained in the pocket—an elusive task, but one that paid off, forcing the Bills into tough situations.

Clutch Plays Under Pressure

The hallmark of great teams is their ability to step up when the stakes are highest. And that’s exactly what the Texans did. Ryans was proud of how his team

executed situational football in the game's closing moments. “It was everybody working together,” he explained. From Tommy Townsend’s impeccable punt, pinning the Bills at the two-yard line, to the defense standing strong with three critical stops, every player contributed in the game’s defining moments. When it was time to seal the deal, it was C.J. Stroud finding Dare Ogunbowale, moving the ball just enough to set up the game-winning field goal.

Azeez Al-Shaair: A Warrior on the Field

Among the defensive standouts, LB Azeez Al-Shaair gave a performance for the ages. Battling through illness, Al-Shaair didn’t just show up—he led. “People don’t know

he was sick last night. For him to gut it out and play every snap was outstanding,” Ryans commented. It’s these gut-check performances that reveal the true heart of a player, and Al-Shaair showed why he’s indispensable to this Texans squad.

Ka’imi Fairbairn’s Heroics: Texans’ All-Time Leading Kicker Delivers

If there was any doubt about Ka’imi Fairbairn’s clutch gene, it was forever erased with his electrifying 59-yard field goal, which sailed through the uprights in the game’s final moments. Fairbairn’s contribution not only sealed the win but also solidified his place in franchise history as the Texans' all-time lead-

ing kicker. “It’s comforting to know you have a guy who can hit it at that critical moment,” Ryans stated, acknowledging Fairbairn’s value to the team. Fairbairn, calm under pressure, attributes his success to preparation. “Once the ball’s off my foot, it’s out of my hands.

I did all I could. The rest is celebration,” he said, downplaying the nerves that come with such moments. But there’s no doubt—when the game is on the line, Fairbairn is a name Houston fans can trust.

C.J. Stroud: Calm, Composed, and Clutch

C.J. Stroud continues to evolve as the Texans' leader on the field. While the second half didn’t go as smoothly as the first, Stroud displayed maturity beyond his years. Reflecting on his performance, Stroud remarked, "It’s easy to see the turnovers, but I’m proud of how I stayed calm and improvised when we needed it most."

His growth is evident in moments like the one where he found Ogunbowale for a critical gain, setting up Fairbairn’s game-winner.

IAUTOMOTIVE: TESLA ROBOTAXI: THE

FUTURE IS HERE—

BUT WOULD YOU RIDE IN A TESLA OR A CHEVY?

f there’s one thing Elon Musk knows how to do, it's ‘captivate’ the world.

Tesla’s much anticipated “We, Robot” event didn’t disappoint, offering attendees a glimpse into the future of transportation that feels straight out of a sci-fi movie. But let’s be real: while Tesla is shooting for the stars with their autonomous technology, the race isn’t a one-car show. GM’s Cruise and Uber are waiting at the starting line. So, the question remains: would you ride in a Tesla robotaxi, or is the Chevy Cruise more your style?

Tesla's “CyberCab” Steals the Show

At the center of the event was the debut of the Tesla CyberCab—a slick, futuristic vehicle designed to operate without the need for a human driver. No steering wheel, no pedals, and certainly no need for small talk with an awkward Uber driver. If you’ve ever dreamed of having your own personal chauffeur made of metal and code, Tesla is getting close to making that dream a reality.

But as exciting as the CyberCab was, Wall Street analyst Adam Jonas of Morgan Stanley urged everyone to manage their expectations. We may be a few years away from a fully functional robotaxi service zipping through Houston’s bustling streets. What Tesla offered was a tantalizing demo of its Full Self-Driving (FSD)

software, operating in a closed or semiclosed course. It’s enough to keep Tesla fans buzzing but not quite enough to start hailing robotaxis through an app—yet.

A Two-Way Race: Tesla vs. Cruise

As Tesla dazzles with its ambitious plans, General Motors (GM) is rolling up its sleeves and getting down to business. The company’s Cruise autonomous vehicles are poised to hit the roads through a partnership with Uber next year. Uber riders will soon have the option to choose between a human driver or a fully autonomous Cruise vehicle. After a brief pause due to a serious accident in San Francisco, Cruise is back in action, cautiously working with safety drivers to regain public trust.

GM isn’t slowing down. The Uber partnership is a smart move for Cruise, allowing it to seamlessly integrate into an existing rideshare network while Tesla is still perfecting its next-gen vehicles. As they say, slow and steady wins the race—

or does it?

Analysts Weigh In on the Future

Deutsche Bank’s Edison Yu also chimed in with a bold prediction: Tesla’s “CyberCab” might serve as the basis for a more affordable EV, colloquially dubbed “Model 2.” This sub-$30K EV could revolutionize the market, making Tesla more accessible to budget-conscious buyers. If Tesla can pull it off, it would open the door to a whole new universe of buyers— and a fleet of potential robotaxis. It’s a game-changer that has investors and enthusiasts alike on the edge of their seats. While GM is focusing on safety and easing back into the autonomous driving game, Tesla continues to push the envelope. Both companies face significant hurdles, including regulatory scrutiny and soaring investment costs, but neither shows any sign of slowing down.

Houston's Future: Are We Ready?

As we look toward the future of

transportation in Houston, it’s hard not to get excited about the possibilities. Imagine a world where you can call for a ride, and moments later, a sleek Tesla CyberCab or Chevy Cruise pulls up, driverless and ready to whisk you away. It’s a vision of convenience, efficiency, and cutting-edge technology that’s closer than we think. But the road to autonomous transportation isn’t without its bumps. Tesla and GM both face challenges in the form of regulatory approval, public trust, and the technological complexities of creating fully autonomous vehicles. Houston, with its sprawling highways and heavy traffic, could either be a proving ground for these innovations or one of their greatest obstacles.

The Real Question: Which Would You Choose?

So, let’s get down to it. After Tesla’s jaw-dropping showcase, would you put your trust in a Tesla CyberCab to get you where you need to go, or would you feel safer riding in a Cruise autonomous vehicle through Uber’s platform? It’s a battle between two giants, and the outcome could change the way we think about transportation forever.
