COMMENTARY

LET POLITICIANS KNOW WE'RE SERIOUS ABOUT CHANGE By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer I

n Washington, the big debate over President Biden's Building Back program is coming to a head. It will soon be settled - one way or another. Most Americans who work hard, worry about the pandemic, fear for their children in school, and struggle to plan in this troubled time have neither the time nor the faith to pay much attention to posturing politicians. This time, however, it is important to understand what is at stake. The press focuses on the debate over unimaginably large numbers -- $3.5 trillion against $1.5 trillion, the $550 billion infrastructure bill against the $3.5 billion reconciliation bill. But this isn't a debate about numbers. It is an argument about morals, about what kind of country we are, and what kind of country we want to be. The dollars are the least interesting thing about the Biden plan. What is compelling is that it addresses pressing needs and offers action. Aid to families with children that would cut the number of children in poverty in half. Paid family leave so that working mothers and fathers can have the time to care for their babies or their family in time of sickness. Major steps to make daycare affordable so that young couples won't be afraid to have children and mothers and fathers can afford to work. Tuition-free community college and advanced training so that young people can afford to go to college no matter their parent's income. Medicare coverage for dental, eye and hearing costs so that seniors can afford the treatment

4

they need. Lower prescription drug costs so we can afford the drugs we need, and the government can save billions that would otherwise be ripped off by the drug companies. The first modest down payment on addressing the real, present and growing costs of extreme weather and climate change. This is the real deal. The argument isn't about whether we can afford to do it, but whether we are so foolish not to do it. Opponents focus on the price tag because they dare not argue against the necessity of the wildly popular reforms. We don't know what will happen. The 50-50 split in the Senate and the four-vote Democratic margin in the House, along with unanimous Republican obstruction, means that Democrats must unite to get anything done. That allows the wealthy and corporations to focus their legion of lobbyists and millions in ad campaigns on a handful of politicians. Joe Manchin, one of the most notorious foot-draggers, said one thing that is true: If Democrats want to see change, "elect more liberals" (read "reformers with integrity)." To forestall that, Republicans in states across the country are passing laws to make it harder to vote, particularly for the young, for people of color, for the infirm. And they are empowering legislatures in states they control to overturn the results of an election if they don't like the outcome. That's a good part of the reason pundits say Democrats are likely to lose seats in the House and Senate in the midterms next year. The Republican agenda and pundit projections are based on business as usual and

on a distracted, low-turnout electorate that can easily be turned off by making voting more difficult. In that assumption lies our power. As Dr. King taught us, we can mobilize and vote in large numbers to teach them the cost of their insult. We can elect new, large reform majorities that cannot simply pass the Build Back Better Agenda but go beyond it to address the inequality and injustice, the market fundamentalist idolatry, the rigged system that fails most Americans. In primary elections and in general elections, we can choose reformers over the corrupt, those who represent their voters over those who serve their donors. That can start now. On campuses, young people flock to class and to football games, but they would flock to register and vote

www.StyleMagazine.com

if they knew the stakes. They should be able to vote where they currently live and get their mail, which now is on their college campus. Working and poor people could ensure they are registered and know where to vote as the rules are changed. Parents and teachers can inform one another on the possibility of real change. In 2020, the turnout of voters for both parties exceeded all expectations. We should start now to let politicians know that they will be rewarded for leading, not obstructing, the change we need. jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson

WHY I WENT TO JAIL ON OCTOBER 5TH By Ben Jealous, National Political Writer S

ometimes friends have to hold friends accountable. That’s why I got arrested outside the White House on Oct. 5. I was there with other civil rights and religious leaders to call on President Joe Biden to do more to protect voting rights that are under attack. We know that President Biden supports voting rights. He has called anti-voting laws being passed by Republican state legislators the biggest threat to our democracy since the Civil War. We need him to act like he truly believes those words. We need a federal voting rights law passed this year. More states are enacting voter suppression. They are abusing the redistricting process to rig future elections and give Republicans more power than they would win in a fair system. They want to shut Democrats out of power in 2022 and 2024. They want to stop progress that millions of Americans voted for when we put President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in the White House—and mobilized to elect Georgia Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff. We have seen this before. When Black people and their allies won political power after the Civil War, white supremacists used violence and illegitimate power to reverse that progress. State-level voter suppression was a core tactic of Jim Crow. The solution then, and the solution today, is strong federal voting rights legislation that will override those state laws and prevent new ones from taking effect. The good news is that the legislation has been written. It has passed the House of Representatives and it has the support of every Democratic senator. If it gets to the White House, President Biden will sign it.

6

That bad news is that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and his Republican colleagues are using Senate filibuster rules to keep voting rights from coming up for a vote. This is 2021, not 1921. President Biden and Senate Democrats cannot let McConnell have the final word on voting rights in this country. In the 1960s, President Lyndon Johnson did not choose between civil rights and his anti-poverty agenda. He knew the country needed both and he used his mastery of the Senate to get both passed. That’s what we need from President Biden, who has more experience in the Senate than any president since Johnson. The infrastructure bill is vitally important. So is the Build Back Better agenda. But we need the White House to devote the same level of urgency to the infrastructure of our democracy. President Biden must lead Senate Democrats in passing voting rights this year—and getting rid of the filibuster if it stands in the way. We need strong, effective moral leadership both inside and outside the White House at this moment. The civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s was a moral movement. It called on Americans to live up to their own ideals as well as to the promises in our founding documents. It brought the public pressure that compelled LBJ to use the powers of his office to pass civil rights and voting rights legislation. I was proud to stand outside the White House with so many religious leaders: a Catholic nun representing thousands of her sisters; a Jewish rabbi in whose organization’s office the original Voting Rights Act was drafted; Black Baptist and AME clergy

taking their place in the Black church’s long legacy of working for justice. We were joined by representatives of secular social justice and voting rights organizations. Rev. Timothy McDonald, who pastored in Martin Luther King’s church and who serves as the co-chair of People For the American Way, the organization I lead, led us in singing and prayer and brought powerful words of truth. I choked up a bit with gratitude for their leadership, and with gratitude for all the members of the movement, including members of my own family, who risked their lives over the years to secure the right to vote for all Americans. Before I was arrested and spent the night in jail, I delivered a message to President Biden: When the president of the League of Women Voters is willing to risk arrest, when pastors in Dr. King’s lineage are willing to risk arrest, when Catholic nuns are willing

to risk arrest to call you to fulfill your promise to make voting rights a top priority, it is time to examine your moral conscience. Ben Jealous serves as president of People For the American Way. Jealous has decades of experience as a leader, coalition builder, campaigner for social justice and seasoned nonprofit executive. In 2008, he was chosen as the youngest-ever president and CEO of the NAACP. He is a graduate of Columbia University and Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and he has taught at Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania. jjackson@rainbowpush.org. GLOBAL: JOE BIDEN MAKES SUPPLY CHAIN PUSH IN BID TO AVERT CHRISTMAS CRISIS By Cherranda Smith, wwwReuters.com – Newswire

There are some 500,000 containers waiting to be offloaded at the clogged ports of Los Angeles (pictured). Photo: Reuters

P

resident Joe Biden on Wednesday urged the private sector to help ease supply chain blockages that are threatening to disrupt the American holiday season and said the White House plans a nationwide overhaul of the clogged system. Biden said the Port of Los Angeles would join the Port of Long Beach, two of the country‘s busiest, in expanding round-the-clock operations to unload an estimated 500,000 containers waiting on cargo ships offshore. Walmart, Target and other big retailers would also expand their overnight operations at the ports to try to meet delivery needs, Biden said. It is a “big first step” to revamping supply chains in the United States, the world‘s biggest consumer market, Biden said, adding the government would be heavily involved. “If federal support is needed, I‘ll direct all appropriate action, and if the private sector doesn’t step up, we’re going to call them out and ask them to act,” the president said in remarks at the White House. The broader goal, he said, is to

address long-standing weaknesses in the US supply chain. The stop-and-start nature of the pandemic has snarled global supply chains that are optimised for just-in-time movements of goods. The supply crisis is driven in part by the global Covid-19 pandemic, as sales of consumer durables jumped amid worker shortages and transport hub slowdowns. A shortage of warehouse workers and truck drivers to pick up goods is partly to blame. Lower-than-expected Christmas sales could hurt US companies and pose a political risk for Biden, who is already battling a host of other domestic problems in his first year in office. The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll shows the economy continues to be the most important issue for Democrats and Republicans alike. White House officials have said that Americans may face higher prices and some empty shelves this Christmas due the supply chain problem. White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki

told reporters Biden could not guarantee there would be no holiday disruptions. “What we can do is use every lever at the federal government level to reduce delays,” she said, when asked about the possibility of mobilising National Guard or other troops. Besides the stepped-up port activity, three large carriers of goods – Walmart, FedEx and UPS – plan to step up their round-the-clock operations to speed the shipment of goods across the country. Samsung, Home Depot and Target are also increasing their work in off-peak hours. The White House expects the pledges from the six companies to expand their hours will amount to 3,500 additional containers moving each week through the end of the year. Biden spoke after meeting executives from the two ports as well as from the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, the Teamsters, the AFL-CIO, Walmart, FedEx, UPS, Target, the National Retail Federation, the American Trucking Association, the Pacific Maritime Association, and

more.

Some CEOs scheduled to attend noted they are already working around-the-clock. “We’ve been running 24/7 supply chain operations for years, including at the ports,” said Target CEO Brian Cornell in a blog post ahead of the meeting. Target handles about 50 per cent of its containers that arrive in California ports at night, he wrote, and is committed to increasing that amount by 10 per cent over the next 90 days. The Consumer Brands Association urged the White House to set up a supply chain war room and bring in private sector experts and government officials to help rapidly identify problems. “We cannot ignore the warning signals of higher prices and reduced availability,” said the trade group‘s CEO, Geoff Freeman.

POLITICAL: PROPOSED CONGRESSIONAL REDISTRICTING PLAN COULD SPLIT UP HOUSTON HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOODS By Reena Diamanter, www.APNews.com – Newswire

Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, speaks during the March on Washington, (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin, Pool)

A

Texas House committee is holding a hearing on a proposal by Senate Republicans to redraw the state’s congressional districts. A lot of the reaction is focusing on one element of the new map, a controversial proposal to put two Black Democratic members of Congress in the same district. Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and Rep. Al Green once again traveled to Austin in hopes of convincing Republicans in the lower chamber to toss out the proposed redraw. Dr. Michael O. Adams said he was not born in Texas, but he said he got there as fast as he could. He has been a professor at Texas Southern University in Houston for about 40 years. The historically Black college is in Texas’ 18th Congressional District, where he has lived for nearly as long. It was a district once represented by Barbara Jordan, the first African American woman from the South elected to the U.S. House. Adams said since then the district has been a "bastion of political power." “It’s the culture, it’s the sum total of the peo-

ple existence in the city of Houston, in the Houston metropolitan areas. Everything that defines Houston from our our food in terms of who we are, our politics, our churches, in terms of the black churches, we find these in the Third Ward and in the Fifth Ward," Adams said. Houston’s historic Third and Fifth Wards, as well as TSU and the University of Houston have been in the district for nearly 50 years. The Texas Senate’s redistricting proposal splits them up. Jackson Lee has represented the district since 1995, but the Senate Republicans’ proposed map would take her home and those historic neighborhoods out of it. "No matter what the district ultimately looks like, representation of whoever the people are is crucial. But the protection is to protect people who've had a history of discrimination, a history of segregation, to give them an opportunity to select a person of their choosing," Jackson Lee told Capital Tonight. The plan would also pit her against her Democratic colleague Green. Both have come to redistricting

hearings at the Texas Capitol a second time hoping to change the minds of House Republicans. Out of the 36 U.S. House members from Texas, they are the only two who have appeared in person to testify. “I've been inundated with persons who have called to my attention that they believe that this is unfair. They believe that is being disrespectful, and there are persons who believe that it was done with intentionality. My hope is that we can resolve this," Green told Capital Tonight. After the Senate passed the maps on party lines, they were handed off to the House committee on redistricting to decide if they will address these concerns and others regarding how the lines approach Texas’ explosive growth driven by people of color. “It goes beyond just descriptive representation. It actually is defined as substantive representation. We need somebody to advocate for those issues that impact upon people of color, and a part of the diversity that we see,” Adams said.

When laying out the bill at the beginning of the hearing, redistricting committee chair, Rep. Todd Hunter, R-Corpus Christi, read information sent by the Senate. It mentioned the author's objectives which included complying with the law, requiring the equalization of district populations based on the 2020 Census, keeping communities of interest together, and preserving the core of existing districts. The hearing on the proposed congressional maps comes hours after the Texas House approved a redistricting map for its 150 members that aims to solidify Republican control of the chamber for the next decade. "The plan achieves fair representation for the citizens of Texas while complying with the law," Hunter said about the House maps.

POLITICAL: TEXAS ATTORNEY GENERAL KEN PAXTON’S FAILED LAWSUIT TO BLOCK 2020 ELECTION RESULT WAS SECRETLY PUSHED By Nick Anderson, www.RefornAustin.org – Newswire

T

exas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s lawsuit to have the 2020 election results overturned was pushed by Christian Conservative activist attorney Michael P. Farris, according to emails obtained through open-records requests by The New York Times, Sections of Paxton’s lawsuit on behalf of the State of Texas were lifted verbatim from a draft circulated by Farris. Farris, president, and CEO of the Alliance Defending Freedom, played a key, behind-the-scenes role in the lawsuit by shopping a draft to several Republican attorneys general. Paxton bit. Ultimately, an additional 17 Republicans attorneys general filed an Amicus brief in support of Paxton’s suit. Farris is a prominent conservative lawyer who defended the right of a Colorado cake shop to refused to sell a wedding cake to a gay couple. The case made it all the way to the Supreme Court, where the court ruled in favor of Farris’ client, Masterpiece Cakeshop. The Allaince Defending Freedom, headed by

8

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton Farris, rose to prominence fighting reproductive rights and gay equality while championing home schooling, isolated from more secular influences, as a way to grow a larger Christian movement. Paxton filed the lawsuit on Dec. 7 against states including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Georgia, in an effort to hand the presidency to Trump. Farris confirmed his role in the effort, but asserted that the institution he leads, the Alliance Defending Freedom, was not involved — the Alliance is prohibited by federal law from engaging in political campaigns. “While it’s true that I care about this issue on a personal level, it is not something that ADF works on in any capacity,” he wrote in an email to the New York Times. Drafts of the lawsuit were also sent to the Louisiana attorney general. But the New York Times found the most effort was invested into recruiting either Texas or South Carolina as lead plaintiff. As we now know,

Paxton ultimately complied. “Our Country stands at an important crossroads,” the complaint filed by Paxton argued in its opening argument. Those words were lifted verbatim from the draft Mr. Farris had sent, as was another section proclaiming that “either the Constitution matters and must be followed, even when some officials consider it inconvenient or out of date, or it is simply a piece of parchment on display at the National Archives. We ask the Court to choose the former.” Four days after Paxton filed the lawsuit, it was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court.

STATE: BAN ON VACCINE MANDATES IN TEXAS SHARPENS POLITICAL BATTLE LINES By Annie Linskey, Fenit Nirappil, Ian Duncan, The Washington Post

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott speaks during a news conference in San Antonio. (AP Photo/Eric Gay, File)

T

he nationwide fight over coronavirus vaccine mandates gained intensity this week as top Republicans and their conservative allies escalated attacks on public health strategies aimed at curbing the pandemic, drawing corporate America into the center of a burgeoning cultural and political clash. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, R, sought to ban covid-related mandates in the country’s second-largest state, while Republicans seized on flight disruptions at Dallas-based Southwest Airlines, saying they were caused by employees protesting mandates. That assertion was disputed by company and union officials. The anti-mandate cause is becoming increasingly central to pro-Trump Republicans, with figures such as Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis loudly promoting it, a development that complicates President Joe Biden’s efforts to fight the pandemic. The clash over mandates is playing out far beyond Texas. On Tuesday, a federal judge said New York state, which has imposed a mandate on healthcare workers, must allow religious exemptions while the mandate works its way through the courts. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, an outspoken conservative, tweeted

that “Ohio should ban all vaccine mandates.” And the Brooklyn Nets basketball team told superstar guard Kyrie Irving on Tuesday that he must get vaccinated or he cannot play or practice with the team - prompting a tweet from Donald Trump Jr., the former president’s son, lauding Irving over what he had “sacrificed.” This growing clamor over vaccine mandates - which public health experts say are the best way to end the nearly two-year pandemic, and which have proved effective in other countries - poses a direct challenge to Biden. After initial hesitancy, he has embraced vaccine requirements as he seeks to deliver on the central promise of his presidency to take the country past covid. “There are very few Republicans that you talk to - at any level - who are supportive of mandates,” said Brendan Steinhauser, an Austin-based Republican consultant and former campaign manager for Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas. “So that’s the unifying feature.” Abbott’s order shows that Texas Republicans, Steinhauser said, see an advantage in siding with the restive GOP base over their traditional allies in big business. “In Texas today, there are far more conser-

vative rural Republicans than urban or even suburban Republicans, and they have a lot of clout,” said Steinhauser. On Monday, Abbott issued an executive order banning any entity in his state - including private companies - from mandating coronavirus vaccines for workers or customers, expanding prior orders from his office that prohibited government entities from imposing such requirements. Abbott’s team described the move as a way to create clarity after Biden announced recentlythat the U.S. Labor Department would develop a rule requiring businesses with more than 100 employees to require their workers to get either coronavirus shots or regular tests for the disease. “What Biden did with his bumbling announcement was to confuse businesses,” said Dave Carney, a top strategist for Abbott. “Small businesses throughout the state didn’t want to be in violation of the president’s bumbling press conference.” That prompted the Texas governor “to clarify that there are exceptions, under state law, for things like vaccinations,” Carney said. But Democrats and public health experts

say vaccines are crucial to defeating the pandemic, that mandates are necessary, and that actions like Abbott’s are reckless. Democrat Lina Hidalgo, the top elected official in Harris County, which includes Houston, blasted Abbott on Tuesday. “This prohibition against vaccine mandates is like as if the governor were telling me that I can’t issue an order to evacuate the coastal areas when a hurricane is barreling toward us,” Hidalgo said at a news conference. Abbott, a potential 2024 presidential contender, is seeking to bolster his credentials as a supporter of former president Donald Trump’s approach. In 2022, he faces a gubernatorial primary challenge from the right in former state senator Don Huffines, who recently called on Abbott to do more to challenge vaccine mandates.

For the last two postseasons, the Houston Astros have had to deal with the fallout from the sign-stealing scandal they admitted to being a part of back in 2017. The absences of fans in the stands last season allowed the Astros to escape from the profanity-laced insults and hatred that continued throughout social media and airwaves across the country in other baseball cities. This year has been worse. Houston was booed from the moment they took the field until the final pitch of the game. “Cheaters.” I will not talk about the number of times I have heard “F-Altuve” in opposing parks about Astros' second baseman Jose Altuve. Yet, through it, all Houston continued to do what they have done in the past. Stick together and win games as a unit that moves as one. The Astros came within one game of advancing to their third World Series Championship in four years, losing to the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2020 American League Championship Series. trip by playing in their fifth consecutive ALCS. They become the third team in MLB history to reach as many, joining the Oakland A’s and Atlanta Braves to accomplish such a feat. “It is really special,” said Houston shortstop Carlos Correa. “I will never take this moment for granted. I am going to enjoy it with my teammates as much as I can. This is a special team, special organization, and I am proud of what the front office has been able to do with the Houston Astros. We don’t get tired of these moments. They are special and we perform our best when October comes.”

The Astros will now take on the Boston Red Sox in the best-of-seven ALCS starting Friday at Minute Maid Park. It is a rubber match of sorts as the two teams have faced each other in the past on their way to World Series titles. Houston defeated the Red Sox in 2017 and Boston returned the favor in 2018. Houston had to finish off an opponent that garnered as much ill-will dislike towards the team as the fans and media in the Chicago White Sox to advance to the ALCS. After taking a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five ALDS against the White Sox at home,

the Astros traveled to Guaranteed Rate Field and lost Game 3 by a score of 12 -6 in one of their worst games of the year by striking out a season-high 16 times against the White Sox. Inclement weather caused Game 4 to be pushed back from Tuesday to Wednesday, which worked out in the favor of the Astros. Game 1 starter Lance McCullers Jr. replaced Jose Urquidy as the Game 4 starter and was masterful on the mound in the 10-1 win over the White Sox to end the series. Astros manager Dusty Baker reiterated how

his team's determination and grit to fight through all the rhetoric from the naysayers keeps them focused. “We have been constantly bombarded by negatives, especially on the road, but these guys come to play, and they love each other,” Baker said. “I love this team and the city loves this team, and that is all that counts.

LOCAL: COUNCIL MEMBER POLLARD GIVES HOUSTON FORENSIC SCIENCE CENTER $50,000 By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

H

ouston City Council Member Edward Pollard is dedicating $50,000 of his district’s discretionary funds to help pay for crime scene investigators’ overtime as homicides continue to spike, rising nearly 28 percent in 2021 compared to last year. In the first two weeks of October alone, the Houston Forensic Science Center’s 39-member crime scene unit (CSU) has responded to 25 homicides, and 24 other scenes, for a total of 1,168 scenes this year. The crime scene unit averaged 4.8 scenes per day in September – among them 56 homicides. The city is currently averaging well over two homicides per day. “This unit operates 24/7 and responds to crimes across Houston’s 685 square miles, and they are only making it to a fraction of the violent crimes committed in the city because we simply don’t have the resources,” said Dr. Peter Stout, HFSC’s CEO and president. “At this pace, I am not only worried about the mental health and safety of my staff, I am also worried we will not have enough money to finish off the fiscal year. Council Member Pollard’s generosity and support will help us with some of these challenges, but there is no question it is not enough,” Dr. Stout added. Council Member Pollard has been a visible and vocal advocate for creative methods

though some has also gone to technicians in the unit who upload images into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), the national firearms database. That unit has seen the average number of guns increase from about 300 a month in 2019 to more than 550 guns a month this year. “Every discipline is being impacted not only by the surge in violent crime but also the courts going back into session after more than a year of near total standstill,” Dr. Stout added. “At some point, something’s got to give.” HFSC is a local government corporation that provides forensic services to the City of Houston and other local agencies. LOCAL: HOUSTON NATIVE SERVES AS A MEMBER OF U.S. NAVY’S “SILENT SERVICE” By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Amanda Rae Moreno, Navy Office of Community Outreach - Newswire

A

Houston, Texas, native is stationed at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, homeport to all East Coast ballistic-missile and guided-missile submarines. Seaman Nathaniel Vasquez, a 2017 Pasadena Memorial High School graduate, joined the Navy one year ago. Today, Vasquez serves as a culinary specialist, whose responsibilities include cooking healthy meals for the crew. “I come from a military family,” said Vasquez. “I joined the Navy because I knew it would allow me to travel and meet new people.” According to Vasquez, the values required to succeed in the military are similar to those found in Houston. “My parents inspired me,” said Vasquez. “I was always working with my dad. He taught me the value of hard work. My mom taught me the value of discipline.” Known as America’s “Silent Service,” the Navy’s submarine force operates a large fleet of technically advanced vessels. These submarines are capable of conducting rapid defensive and offensive operations around the world, in furtherance of U.S. national security. There are three basic types of submarines: fast-attack submarines (SSN), ballistic-missile submarines (SSBN) and guided-missile submarines (SSGN). Fast-attack submarines are designed to hunt down and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships; strike targets ashore with cruise missiles; carry and deliver Navy SEALs; conduct intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions; and engage in mine warfare. The Navy's ballistic-missile submarines, often referred to as "boomers," serve as a strategic deterrent by providing an undetectable platform for submarine-launched ballistic missiles. SSBNs are designed

14

Seaman Nathaniel Vasque specifically for stealth, extended patrols and the precise delivery of missiles. Guided-missile submarines provide the Navy with unprecedented strike and special operation mission capabilities from a stealthy, clandestine platform. Each SSGN is capable of carrying 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, plus a complement of heavyweight torpedoes to be fired through four torpedo tubes. As a member of the submarine force, Vasquez is part of a rich 121-year history of the U.S. Navy’s most versatile weapons platform, capable of taking the fight to the enemy in the defense of America and its allies. Serving in the Navy means Vasquez is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.

“Our mission is strategic deterrence,” said Vasquez. “We keep the bad guys away.” With more than 90 percent of all trade traveling by sea, and 95 percent of the world’s international phone and internet traffic carried through underwater fiber optic, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity and security of the United States is directly linked to a strong and ready Navy. A major component of that maritime security is homeported at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. “We do two big things here in King’s Bay: we send SSBNs on strategic deterrence patrols and we forward deploy our guided missile submarines overseas,” said Rear Adm. John Spencer, Commander, Submarine Group Ten. “This work is essential to uphold the number one mission of the Navy: strategic deterrence. And this is the only home port for both of these types of submarines on the East Coast.” Strategic deterrence is the Nation’s ultimate insurance program, and for decades, Kings Bay has been home to Ohio Class SSBN ballistic-missile submarines. Beginning in 2028, the new Columbia Class ballistic-missile submarines will arrive and provide continuous sea-based strategic deterrence into the 2080s. As Vasquez and other sailors continue to train and perform the missions they are tasked with, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy.

Guatemala’s Doctor Nativo is one of Central America’s most exciting new talents. His music layers Mayan spirituality, social activism, and folk wisdom over a propulsive sound combining reggae, cumbia, hip hop, and pre-Columbian instruments. Doctor Nativo (real name: Juan Martinez) grew up in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. In 1990, during the bloody, cold-war era Guatemalan civil war, Nativo’s father, Arturo Martinez was assassinated along with five of his friends. Nativo’s childhood, which began so happily, came crashing down. By the age of fifteen, Nativo had left school and had taken up the life of a traveling musician. After busking his way through Europe, India, and Latin America, life brought him to Cuba (the country of his father’s birth), to study at the Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana. Eventually he settled in Barcelona, where he played music in the street, every day, for years, and found his voice through direct contact with the people. Doctor Nativo’s music is buoyant and danceable, but also packs a deep message: a party with a purpose. Follow them on Facebook @milleroutdoor

ENTERTAINMENT: NETFLIX IS STANDING BY DAVE CHAPPELLE AND 'THE CLOSER'

etflix is defending Dave Chappelle's new comedy special after it has been criticized as transphobic by some LGBTQ+ advocates, artists and employees. Chappelle's special, "The Closer," which debuted on Netflix last week, includes several minutes of jokes about trans people. The comedian says in the special he is "team TERF," referencing the term for "trans-exclusionary radical feminist." "Gender is a fact," Chappelle says. "Every human being in this room, every human being on earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on earth. That is a fact." He talks about backlash he received after making jokes about Caitlyn Jenner and other trans people in previous specials, criticizes cancel culture around author JK Rowling and references his friendship with Daphne Dorman, a trans woman and fellow comedian who opened for him at one of his San Francisco shows. Dorman died by suicide in 2019, which Chappelle addresses in "The Closer." In an October 8 email to employees from Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos and obtained by The Verge and Variety, the executive defended the special. "Several of you have also asked where we draw the line on hate. We don't allow titles on Netflix that are designed to incite hate or violence, and we don't believe The Closer crosses that line. I recognize, however, that

Dave Chappelle, Photo: Mathieu Bitton/Netflix distinguishing between commentary and harm is hard, especially with stand-up comedy which exists to push boundaries," Sarandos wrote to staff. "Some people find the art of stand-up to be mean spirited but our members enjoy it, and it's an important part of our content offering." CNN has not independently verified the email. Netflix has suspended three employees for attending a virtual meeting of directors and vice presidents last week without notifying the meeting organizer in advance, according to a source with knowledge of the matter. One of the suspended employees is Terra Field. Field, a senior software engineer

who identifies as queer and trans, had publicly criticized "The Closer" on Twitter last week. Her suspension is due to her attendance at the meeting and not her tweets, according to the source. "It is absolutely untrue to say that we have suspended any employees for tweeting about this show. Our employees are encouraged to disagree openly and we support their right to do so," a Netflix spokesperson told CNN when asked about the suspensions. Field, tweeted last week that Chappelle's special ridiculed the existence of trans people. "Promoting TERF ideology (which is

what we did by giving it a platform yesterday) directly harms trans people, it is not some neutral act," Field wrote. "This is not an argument with two sides. It is an argument with trans people who want to be alive and people who don't want us to be." Field ended her thread with the names of 37 trans and gender non-conforming people who've been killed throughout 2021. GLAAD, the LGBTQ media advocacy organization, has also condemned comments made in "The Closer" and on Monday issued a statement in response to news of the suspensions and the email from Sarandos. "Netflix has a policy that content 'designed to incite hate or violence' is not allowed on the platform, but we all know that anti-LGBTQ content does exactly that. While Netflix is home to groundbreaking LGBTQ stories, now is the time for Netflix execs to listen to LGBTQ employees, industry leaders, and audiences and commit to living up to their own standards," the organization tweeted. CNN has reached out to representatives of Chappelle. In "The Closer," Chappelle says the special will be the last time he will publicly comment on trans people or issues.

People were out late with empty tummies or tummies with bad food. As a foodie, my friends or real estate clients from other cities know to ask, "Where can I eat at night?" I must say over the past few years the late-night scene in Houston is POPPIN and growing due to diversity and the entrepreneurial life that is exploding here. The options are growing and I have the perfect place for you to go As a food enthusiast, I'm never in the mood for something regular. I always want something that will allow my taste buds to travel. ancestor's door! DiBi RaPiDe is not only Houston's but Texas's very first Senegalese Food Truck. They are in a Halal food truck park located on 7919 Westheimer Rd from 5 pm to 3 am Thursday to Sunday. I spent time with the owners who are originally from Senegal and the wife, Soso gave a beautiful food tour. She started me with Neem, which is a delicious spring roll that was brought to Senegal by Vietnamese refugees during the Vietnam war. I also want to encourage you to look into the history of France, Vietnam, and Senegal because it's part of our history that we should know. Food is an amazing way to travel through history and time and Soso took me on a trip. Senegal is home to the "Original Jollof", so next on the menu was the DiBi. This is the dish I came for. As a proud country girl, I like to suck on the bones and I sucked on the bones! I would like to thank the owners of Dibi for allowing me to experience culture, flavor, and history from the heart. I even had Senegalese beignet from Soso's mom. Please try out this amazing new addition to the Houston food truck family and try everything on the menu. When you go just ask, "Ouuu Est Les DiBi?
