COMMENTARY
Trump Is Complicit In Whitmer Kidnap Plot By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
P
olitical rhetoric can incite. Incendiary posturing can trigger those who carry matches. We’ve now seen this play out dramatically in Michigan. Last week, six men, members of a right-wing militia group calling themselves the Wolverine Watchmen, were arrested and charged with plotting to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan before the November elections. Seven others were charged under Michigan’s anti-terrorism law for allegedly seeking to recruit an army of 200 to storm the Michigan Capitol and ignite a “civil war.” The plot went far beyond the Facebook bluster. The defendants, according to the complaint, held “field training exercises,” purchased a taser for use in the kidnapping, tested an explosive device, possessed and trained with firearms, and conducted surveillance of Whitmer’s vacation home, and of a bridge that might be blown up to impede police response. One argued that they should put the governor on trial for treason. Another allegedly urged: “Snatch and grab man. Grab the f**** governor. Just grab the b****. Because at that point ... it’s over.” Another suggested, “Have one person go to her house. Knock on the door and when she answers it just cap her.” This right-wing domestic terrorism doesn’t fester in a vacuum. Faced with the pandemic, Gov. Whitmer acted to protect the citizens of her state, closing down private facilities, requiring the wearing of masks and social distancing. She pushed publicly for needed protective equipment in the face of the federal government’s disarray. Donald Trump, who seems to be threatened by strong women leaders, repeatedly called her out personally. Republicans in the state legislature called her a “tyrant,” and railed against her actions, even though
4
most Michigan residents supported her efforts to fight the spread of the coronavirus. The festering anger broke out in a stunning demonstration in April when a large rally, featuring Trump posters, swastikas, Confederate flags, Hawaiian shirts (symbol of the anti-government “boogaloo” movement) surrounded the capitol. Men in fatigues carrying assault rifles filled the galleries of the Capitol yelling threats at the legislators below. According to police, NRA promoted “open carry” laws left them powerless to stop them. ` The Republican speaker of the House said, “There’s nothing more American than people coming together to ensure their voices are being heard.” Trump responded not by criticizing the demonstrators, but by tweeting “LIBERATE MICHIGAN.” Even though Trump chose not to create national standards and left the states to operate on their own, he continued to criticize Whitmer and others for not opening their economies faster. He spewed out tweets as though he was an adolescent shooting spitballs when the teacher’s back is turned. Only he isn’t an adolescent; he’s president of the United States. And his incendiary words incite. Republican legislators in the state took up Trump’s follies, joining in scorning masks as oppressive, and denouncing the governor in harsh terms, calling her actions to stop the spread of the pandemic “tyrannical,” comparing them to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, labeling her a dictator. Signs like “tyrants get the rope,” “Ditch the Witch” and “Heil Whitler” began to appear alongside Confederate flags and calls to “Let us free from tyranny.”A Republican leader in the Senate joined with the armed demonstrators in a rally. One of those on the stage was later indicted

as part of the plot against the governor. Asked to denounce white supremacy and the right-wing militia Proud Boys in the first presidential debate, Trump memorably called on them to “stand back and stand by.” The Proud Boys took that as a mandate and a slogan. The plotters were emboldened. When the plot came out, Whitmer drew the inescapable connections: “When our leaders meet with, encourage, or fraternize with domestic terrorists, they legitimize their actions and they are complicit. When they stoke and contribute to hate speech, they are complicit.” “Just last week, the president of the United States stood before the American people and refused to condemn white supremacists and hate groups like these two Michigan militia groups,” Whitmer said, noting that those who were plotting to kidnap her had “heard the president’s words not as a rebuke but as a rallying cry -- as a call to action.” Rather than apologize, the head of the state Republican Party released a letter criticizing Whitmer for not warning legislators about the plot. Trump complained that she hadn’t thanked him for the work of the FBI, and sniped once more at her, “Gov. Whitmer of Michigan has done a terrible job. She locked
www.StyleMagazine.com
down her state for everyone, except her husband’s boating activities.” As a former Trump Homeland Security official, Miles Taylor, has argued, “[T] he president’s rhetoric has served as a loaded gun for those groups who have since taken his words as sort of permission to do what they’re doing.” American politics is often bare-fisted. In the heat of a campaign, rhetoric can get overheated. When the country is as polarized as this one, the rhetoric can go over the top. But responsible leaders seek to bring us together, not drive us apart; they appeal to the better angels of our character, not our worst fears or prejudices. They try to find ways to reach out to those who are alienated or fearful. What a leader cannot do is fan their hatred or appear to give them permission for violence. You can write to the Rev. ayor Turner kicked off the first day of early voting with students from the University of Houston (UH) and Texas Southern University (TSU). The Mayor announced the Mayor’s Early Vote College Challenge, a challenge encouraging students from the University of Houston, Texas Southern University, and Rice University to cast their ballots during early voting.
Mayor Turner will receive a daily report of the turnout on local campuses and will announce the winning school after the election. During his visit to Texas Southern University, Mayor Turner took part in TSU’s Student March to the Polls. The Mayor joined TSU students by marching down the campus to the TSU polling location where he casted his ballot.
Mayor Turner marches down to the TSU polling location and is joined by TSU students and faculty.
On the first day of early voting, Harris County smashed a record previously set in the 2016 election cycle. Mayor Turner is asking young people to vote early and on election day by sharing their experiences on social media. “Our students are the future of this country and their voices must be heard,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “This is the most important election
of our time and you simply cannot sit it out and expect to be heard. Voting is a fundamental right and the most powerful way to express one’s self. I am encouraging everyone to participate in early voting this year and vote all the way down the ballot.” The mayor also released a public service announcement on the first day of early voting. www.HoustonTX.gov

‘Hunker Down’ The Fall COVID-19 Surge Is Here
T
By www.CNN.com / www.StyleMagazine.com
he US is now grappling with a new Covid-19 surge, one that could overwhelm hospitals, kill thousands of Americans a day by January and leave even young survivors with long-term complications, Christina Maxouris and Holly Yan write. At least 36 states are now reporting increased cases of the virus and hospitalizations are on the rise nationwide in the “fall/winter surge that everyone was worried about,” Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, said yesterday. The US is now averaging 49,000 new infections a day, according to Johns Hopkins University data, with cases accelerating in the Midwest and northern states. “But it’s going to be nationally soon enough,” Hotez added. Small gatherings are a growing source of the spread, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield told US governors on a call, according to audio obtained by CNN.
The warning comes just weeks before the election, which has seen thousands of people brave hours-long waits, glitches and politically motivated obstruction to cast early ballots, Stephen Collinson writes. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump is promising multiple rallies a day, potentially risking the health of his supporters and their communities. It is really up to Americans to turn the tide, or a devastating winter awaits. A further 135,000 Americans could die in the next three months, according to the latest projection from the University of Washington. “This winter -- this November, December, January, February -- could be the worst time in our epidemic,” Hotez said. “Get ready to hunker down.”

DON’T BE DISCOURAGED: This Is The Most Important Election Of Your Life!
F
By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor www.StyleMagazine.com
or months now we have heard how this would not be an ordinary election. Beyond the candidates and the issues, the hot topic has been how we would vote and be safe at the same time. All across the nation, there have been court hearings, lawsuits, protests, and marches with people interpreting laws to favor their side to either take away or add more voting restrictions all to discourage minorities from voting. Harris County Clerk Chris Hollins most notably has had a battle with Governor Greg Abbott over the distribution of mail-in ballot applications. Let us also not forget Gov. Abbott’s order to have only one drop off location for mail-in ballots for a county composed of over 4 million people. With each hurdle we kept pushing forward, lifting our voice to not be ignored, and keeping our eye ever so focus on the goal ahead – voting. We were disappointed but we didn’t drop out. We were derailed but no less determined. We were disgusted but still driven to our goal, demanding of our purpose, and dedicated to our cause to cast our vote in this most important election. Houston Style Magazine applauds every one of you who has done their part to participate in the solution to help the problems that plague our nation. For those who have yet to perform your civic duty Houston Style Magazine has a special message for you – Don’t be discouraged. In the 1800s, there was a lot to be discouraged about. African Americans were thought of as less than human thereby had no rights whatsoever. Then there was the age where African Americans were denied the right to vote for not passing ridiculous literacy tests, jellybeans tests, poll taxes residential property restrictions, and more. Nevertheless, we had those who had a don’t stop, don’t quick attitude who would not rest. Their efforts resulted in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that finally granted minorities the right to vote. President George Bush reauthorized the act in 2006 thereby making it easier for minorities to register to vote. Each time we take a step forward there are others in the background trying their hardest to make us take two steps forward. We must be like our ancestors of yesteryear by not being discouraged but more determined than ever to cast our vote. Elected officials help determine how we all live. They are only given that power when we vote or not vote. Everyone must realize by not voting you are still voting because it is a vote for the other side. Every vote counts. Every vote matters. As I often hear in a commercial, if the right to vote wasn’t so important why would people want to take your right away? Anything worth having is worth saving. There are far few things as important as the right to vote.

Collaborative for Children No Show Luncheon Raises Nearly $200,000 Funds Support Early Learning Resources For Houston’s Most Vulnerable Young Children By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
C
ollaborative for Children raised nearly $200,000 with its virtual No Show Luncheon hosted October 14. Collaborative for Children CEO Dr. Melanie Johnson was joined by the event’s presenting sponsor Steve Kean, of The Kean Family Foundation, sharing the agency’s strategic vision for the future. Sponsors and guests watched a special video presentation outlining Collaborative for Children’s commitment to providing children ages 0 to 5 with innovative early learning opportunities designed to build future leaders, foster critical 21st century skills and achieve school readiness. Working with parents, caregivers, and educators for 33 years, Collaborative for Children has been a leading architect using its collective ingenuity to usher in a future bright with possibilities for every child no matter the circumstances. In 2020, the organization worked hand in hand with the Texas Workforce Commission and city and county officials to help more than 9,000 essential workers find quality child care with its online website findchildcarenow.org. It also recently launched a unique business accelerator program to provide child care centers with business development training and high-quality early learning resources so that they may become Centers of Excellence. Additionally, Collaborative for Children will soon unveil a high-tech learning experience on wheels, which will travel to under-resourced neighborhoods with 21st century programming on board to improve children’s outcomes in literacy, math, and social-emo-
tional development. “Our focus is readying young children for the 21st century. Our vision is to achieve educational equity for all children, and we are constantly evaluating how best to accomplish this,” Johnson said. “That is why we encourage business leaders, area families and individuals who care about the future of our city to recognize the importance that these young minds play in Houston’s success. Getting our children workforce ready starts between 0 and 5 years old. “While we are genuinely excited about the future, it must start today, and financial support is needed now more than ever,” Johnson said. “We’re so grateful to the many supporters who have already recognized that our future workforce depends on our children.” “Kids get kicked out of pre-K at six times the rate of getting kicked out of K-12,” said Steve Kean, of The Kean Family Foundation. “In many cases, that’s boys and that’s tragic. That’s a shame, and it’s an opportunity. Collaborative for Children enables us to capture that opportunity by providing early learning blocks for long-term success.” The luncheon was presented by The Kean Family Foundation, and supported by PNC, Community Health Choice, April and Rob Eschweiler, CenterPoint Energy, Enbridge, Julie and Drew Alexander and Wells Fargo. Other support provided by Dorothy Ables, Allison Falender and Leon Rubinstein, H-E-B, Richard and Ginni Mithoff, Glenna Pierpoint, Laura
Sayavedra, Anna and Charlie Schwartzel, Jennifer and David Strauss and Caren and Rob Sweetland. To learn more about Collaborative for Children’s work in the greater Houston-area, visit collabforchildren.org.

Comcast Offers Thousands Of Grants, Equipment, Marketing And Tech Resources To Small Businesses Hardest Hit By COVID Black-Owned Small Businesses, Those Impacted Most by the Pandemic, are the First Eligible Applicants for Comcast RISE Resources and Grants Up To $10,000 By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
Maria Weaver – Chief Marketing Officer Comcast Advertising
Teresa Ward-Maupin – SVP for Digital and Customer Experience at Comcast Business
Ron Busby – President and CEO U.S. Black Chamber Of Commerce
omcast Corporation today launched Comcast RISE, an initiative created to help strengthen and empower small businesses hard hit by COVID-19. The Comcast RISE program will help thousands of small businesses over the next three years. The multi-faceted program offers grants, marketing and technology upgrades, including media campaigns and connectivity, computer and voice equipment, as well as free marketing insights to all applicants. U.S. small businesses have been particularly hard hit by the pandemic. A recent study from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that the number of U.S. active business owners dropped from 15 million to 11.7 million from February to April. The study cited that Black-owned small businesses were hardest hit, suffering the steepest decline (41 percent), followed by Hispanic and Asian American-owned small businesses. The program will roll out in waves, and starting today, U.S.-based Black-owned small businesses can apply for marketing and technology support and equipment to jumpstart and help them sustain business operations. In addition, all small businesses are able to sign up for free marketing insights and resources. The next wave of the program will open up eligibility to include Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), those next hit hardest by the effects of the pandemic. “There’s this old saying, ‘When America catches a cold, black America catches pneumonia.’ Black Businesses, which never recovered from the great recession, have been ravaged by COVID-19 with Black-owned businesses twice as likely to close as their white counterparts. While many businesses have responded by moving online or retrofitting to allow for social distancing, many Black business
owners have had to halt their operations completely,” said Ron Busby, President/CEO, U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. “Comcast RISE will help Black businesses adapt to the changing landscape and position them to be leaders in America’s burgeoning online to offline economy. USBC commends Comcast for starting this program and for their hands-on support of Black-owned businesses, because advancing Black businesses advances us all.” Comcast decided to launch Comcast RISE, which stands for “Representation, Investment, Strength and Empowerment,” to help the hardest hit small business owners get a fresh start and boost their operations during this difficult time. Comcast RISE brings together two of the company’s brands —Comcast Business and Effectv, both with expertise in the small business space — to help empower business owners with the tools, expertise and resources needed to navigate the economic effects of the pandemic. “We see and know firsthand how vital small businesses are in powering economic growth, recovery and innovation. Now more than ever, driving awareness and maintaining a strong digital presence are crucial for these businesses to succeed,” said Teresa Ward-Maupin, SVP for Digital and Customer Experience at Comcast Business. “We created Comcast RISE to give these business owners access to the tools and resources they need to survive the pandemic and thrive.” “Small businesses have always played an integral role in our nation’s growth and future. In the
midst of the pandemic, these entrepreneurs provided many of the services and resources that keep our communities up and running,” said Comcast Advertising Chief Marketing Officer Maria Weaver. “We’re proud and humbled to support those hit hardest by the pandemic, and provide them with marketing and technology support at a time when they need it the most.” Comcast RISE consists of the following main components: · A MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES PROGRAM: This pillar combines Effectv’s renowned media platform and marketing expertise, its award-winning creative agency, Mnemonic, and state-of-the-art technical support from Comcast Business to help small businesses foster and elevate growth. Recipients will receive help with their marketing, media campaigns and creation of 30-second commercials, as well as website and tech upgrades, including: o CONSULTING: Advertising and marketing consultations with local Effectv marketing, research and creative teams to gain insights on how to grow your business. o MEDIA: A linear TV media campaign to run over a 90-day period. o CREATIVE PRODUCTION: Turnkey :30 TV commercial production for their businesses. o TECHNOLOGY MAKEOVERS: Computer equipment and Internet, voice and cybersecurity services for up to a 12-month period to support business recovery while implementing other

Comcast small business initiatives. (Taxes and other fees may still apply for tech makeover services.) · BUSINESS RESOURCES TO HELP WITH CURATED CONTENT: Comcast will create a business learning destination page on the X1 platform. This will include programming content about small businesses, tutorials and educational content intended to help businesses grow. · GRANTS: In the coming months, Comcast will be awarding grants of up to $10,000 each for U.S.-based small and diverse businesses that have been in operations for three to five years.
Comcast RISE is part of a larger $100 million Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiative that Comcast launched this summer. In June, Comcast NBCUniversal announced the development of a comprehensive, multiyear plan to allocate $75 million in cash and $25 million in media over the next three years to fight injustice and inequality against any race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation or ability. In the future, the program aims to expand to other small and diverse business owners. Visit http://

PVAMU’s New Healthy Houston Initiative Aims To Improve Quality Of Life for Residents In Several Underserved Communities By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
T
he Houston metroplex raises the bar on so many levels, including its rich melting pot of cultures, traditions, and lifestyles. Unfortunately, some of its residents’ lifestyles are more harmful than good. To help tackle these issues, Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) launched its new Healthy Houston Initiative (HHI). Professors, researchers, practitioners, and students from PVAMU’s Colleges of Agriculture and Human Sciences (CAHS), Nursing, Juvenile Justice and Psychology, and Business will utilize a $750,000 grant awarded by The Texas A&M University System to bring training and programming to targeted communities. “The Healthy Houston Initiative brings together four of our colleges, demonstrating the best in program delivery of our land-grant mission,” said James M. Palmer, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs. Carolyn Williams, Ph.D., executive director of PVAMU’s Cooperative Extension Program (CEP), said, “The mission of Prairie View A&M University’s Healthy Houston Initiative is to assist in improving the health, nutrition, and wellness of selected underserved communities in Houston.” Williams is leading programmatic efforts for HHI. Statistical data reveals there are pockets of poverty (POPs) within the Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area (GHA), which includes Harris and its surrounding counties. POPs are infamous for high rates among its residents of chronic health issues, illegal drug use, juvenile crime, and low primary, secondary, and college attendance and completion rates. Despite prevailing wisdom, most of these problems are fixable. Gerard D’Souza, Ph.D., dean of the College of Agriculture & Human Sciences, which houses CEP, says HHI will take a holistic approach in assisting individuals and communities in improving their quality of life. “The college’s Cooperative Extension Program, which serves 35 counties in the state, has responded to the family, agriculture, youth, and economic needs of underserved Texans for over a century,” he said. “The Healthy Houston Initiative is about taking the university to the people, which is consistent with our land-grant mission. Agricultural colleges—such as ours—can play a role in research, discovery, and dissemination. It is in this spirit that we are delighted to be of service to the communities of Houston that many of us call home.” The colleges will work through HHI to accomplish four primary goals in the GHA:
16
October 15 – October 21, 2020
· Expanding the awareness of nutritional and
health services available to families; · Improving healthy self-care practices through
screenings, assessments, and referrals; · Providing workshops and educational op-
portunities focused on parenting and family support; and · Improving access to healthy foods.
“Year one will focus on the areas of Third Ward, Acres Homes, Sunnyside, Alief-Westwood, Kashmere Gardens, Magnolia Park-Manchester, and Second Ward in the Houston area,” said Williams. “We will seek input from the Mayor of Houston to prioritize the identified communities. Our program is designed to reach school-age youth and adults across the lifespan.” Virtual and face-to-face programs include mental health first aid training for families; food demonstrations, promoting the use of fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers markets and food banks; telehealth screenings to help identify intervention strategies for self-care related to diabetes, blood pressure, and other common health conditions; and youth development activities regarding STEM and pre-college virtual conferences. HHI will also incorporate modules from its already successful programs in financial planning and literacy, and efforts such as the PVAMU-Haverstock Venture, which currently provides support services to residents in the Haverstock Hills Apartments to help

strengthen them and address social-related problems. “After residents in these communities complete these programs, they will be able to pass down their knowledge to future generations. It will eventually lead to a shift for the better in Houston’s culture,” said Williams. The impact of HHI is expected to be immeasurable. It’s certainly expected to counteract effects from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has magnified the wealth and wellness gap among residents. “The funding for this initiative is for one year, but we are hopeful that we will receive additional funding to continue,” said Williams. “The HHI initiative is critical to the City of Houston. In working with other agencies, PVAMU is determined to promote a holistic wellness approach to healthy lifestyles in meeting the needs of families and communities.” PVAMU kicked off HHI with a news conference on October 12 with Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp, PVAMU President Ruth J. Simmons, and CAHS Dean Gerard D’Souza. View the news conference in its entirety on the HTV Houston Television Facebook page.

Be Fearless And Fierce In The Face Of Breast Cancer Angela Wright Shares Her Journey As A Breast Cancer Survivor By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor – www.StyleMagazine.com
W
e all know that life can throw some twists and turns then there are a few times life throws a curve that almost takes our breath away. Angela Wright had one of those times. She was a veteran teacher and partial administrator having worked in the Houston Independent School District for 30 years. Her eyes were looking towards retirement when she got the news that she had cancer. It came as a shock to her. Wright is the type that makes her health a priority. Since the age of 40, like recommend, she regularly had mammograms, in addition, to doing self-breast checks at home. She did not have a family history of breast cancer. In fact, she was the first one in her immediate family on her mother’s side to be diagnosed. Plus, every test she had previously taken came back clear detecting no lumps. However, her annual breast routine got alter in 2009 when she had surgery unrelated to breast cancer. After she missed her breast exam in 2009 and recovered from surgery,
Wright got back on her routine in 2010. It was during her annual well woman’s exam that her doctor detected a lump. The lump proved to be cancerous. After the initial shock Wright said there was only one thing to do in her mind, “I just kind of turned it over to the Lord.” She changed her mindset and refused to have a whoa is me sympathy party. Wright was diagnosed as having stage 2, T2NO, breast cancer. This means that the tumor found by her doctor was not larger than 2cm but no larger than 5 cm and the cancer had not spread to her lymph nodes. The odds for Wright’s survival were high as the five-year survival rate for stage 2 breast cancer survivors is 93% according to the American Cancer Society. Needless to say, her treatments for carcinoma were still very aggressive and lengthy. The first step was having surgery to remove the tumor and place in a port for future chemotherapy treatments. After 7 weeks of healing from both surgeries, Wright started with her four cocktails of various forms of chemotherapy taking one every three weeks for 16 weeks. She had 12 stages of chemotherapy. Radiation Monday-Friday for 12 weeks came next. Following
that Wright had a five-year regimen of Tamoxifen with breast exams every month to once a year. As a result of the treatments, Wright did lose her hair that once flowed past her shoulders. She never wore a wig. “I just went bald headed and was proud of my bald head.” When her locks started to grow back the texture of hair changed from thick to soft and very fine and once again hung past her shoulders. Other than feeling ill and not wanting to eat, Wright said her symptoms from the treatments weren’t too bad. She was able to continue working only taking off when she had to for chemotherapy treatments. She remained active as much as she could with a now compromised immune system. With all that behind her, Wright said the only lingering effects are a numbness and nerve pain in her hands and feet. She gets a stinging tingling sinsation that feels like needles poking you constantly. Thankful she is on medication to help with that feeling and the numbness that sometimes occurs. Reflecting on her cancer story Wright said that there is no real way to prepare oneself for a journey with cancer but in her opinion, there are at least three things needed to survive it.
Angel Wright – Cancer Survivor “You do have to have a lot of faith, you do have to have a good support system and a GREAT attitude.” Five years post-cancer; Wright naturally looks at life differently. She values life more by taking it one day at a time. “I take every day as it. Whatever comes comes. I don’t let things stress me out,” expressed Wright. Wright, of course, continues having her annual breast exams. Every last one of them since her completed breast cancer treatments has been clear. That is the best news to hear during times like these when we are all growing closer to our families and each other. As a country, we all are valuing life more and trying to live it with no regrets. Thank you Angela Wright for sharing your story and for giving us another example as to why life is so precious. This month we honor Angela Wright and the many who have survived, undergoing treatment, and tragically died from breast cancer. You are fearless warriors who fight/fought fiercely.

Texans Dance Their Way To Their First Victory Of The Year After Defeating The Jags By Brian Barefield, Sports Editor www.StyleMagazine.com
T
he attendance on Sunday wasn’t the usual 70,000-plus screaming fans that normally fill the stands at the Texans home games at NRG Stadium, but none of the 12,413 fans that were in attendance didn’t leave until the team cleared the field cheering them all the way to the tunnel. The hometown team finally gave the fans something to cheer about after they won their first game of the 2020 NFL season defeating the Jacksonville Jaguars by a score of 30-14. It was the first game for the Texans after the firing of former head coach and general manager, Bill O’Brien earlier in the week. “The win was huge,” said interim head coach Romeo Crennel, who will serve in that position for the remainder
of the season. “You know, particularly the way that we started the season, not winning a game out of four, and then being able to come here at home and play a tough game.” Quarterback Deshaun Watson led a Texans offense that had a season high 486 net yards as he threw for 359 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. It was the second consecutive week that he has thrown for 300 yards or better. “We want to set the tone,” Watson said. “If we want to win some games in this league, especially divisional games, we’ve got to set the tone. We’ve got to go for it. And we’ve got to put our best players in positions to go make big-time plays, and that’s what he did today, and we capitalized.” Making big-time plays is what Houston had in mind when they traded with the Los Angeles Rams for wide receiver Brandin Cooks. After not getting a lot of passes thrown his way a week prior, Watson found Cooks eight
times for 161 yards and a touchdown on Sunday. “The ball happened to come my way,” said Cooks after the game about his performance. “Everyone was making plays today, and when you have that, it seemed like everything just goes well for everyone.” If fans were excited to see what the offensive side of the ball was doing, they must have been super elated to see their defensive unit led by J.J. Watt, Whitney Mercilus, and Zach Cunningham. The defense forced two fumbles in the game that halted the momentum by the Jacksonville offense. It was the first time this season that the defense has caused a turnover. “That’s a big thing we’ve been focused on is just getting the ball, because you can’t win if you’re losing the turnover battle every game,” said defensive back Bradley Roby. “If your offense has the ball more than the other team, then you’re going to win most likely. That was a big focus this week is
Houston Texans For The Win! that we wanted to get our first takeaways and we got two today.” After the victory, Crennel entertained his team by showing off some of his dance moves as he made his way into the locker room. According to Roby he didn’t know which direction his coach was going in as far as dancing was concerned but was happy to see the fun return to the locker room. “Man, he did like five dances,” Roby said. “He did the Soulja Boy, he did the Macarena, he started doing the disco. I didn’t know what he was doing. It was funny though.”
