Now, in its landmark 74th year, the 2023 parade promises a visual spectacle with all-new balloons and floats that encapsulate the essence of “Houston on Parade.” The grand event is scheduled to grace the streets of downtown Houston on the crisp morning of Thursday, November 23rd, starting at 9 a.m. In a symbolic culmination of his tenure, Mayor Sylvester Turner has been conferred the honor of serving as the grand marshal. Joining him in this honor are the illustrious co-grand marshals - Rockets icons, the stalwart coach Rudy Tomjanovich and the electrifying Hall of Famer, Calvin Murphy. Reflecting on his journey with the parade, Mayor Turner expressed, “For nearly a decade, I’ve been enamored by the vibrancy of the H-E-B Thanksgiving Day Parade. CBC ECONOMIC AGENDA AND THE BLACK PRESS By Dr. John E. Warren, National Political Commentator
I
f we missed it, then our profound apologies. The question remains, How do we talk about Economic Justice for Blacks and not mention the Black Press? In the Economic Justice Agenda for 2024, the CBC calls for inclusive hiring and contracting under the federal infrastructure projects like The Inflation Reduction Act and the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Acts. The discussion indicated that the CBC wants to guarantee the hiring of Black workers among the thousands of construction industry jobs that will be available. The significance of this position is based on the historical exclusion of such Black and Hispanic workers according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting the racial de-

mographics in the construction industry at 60% white, 30% Hispanic, and only 5% Black Americans. Once again, for some of us, the disconnect is the omission of the Black press as an instrument of outreach which just happens to be required by law in most states. Here is how the dots connect: Federal dollars used to bid construction contracts must be put out in bids to do the desired work. Those bids are required to give notice under the Administrative Procedures Act found under Title 5 of the U.S. Code, sec. 553, 554, 555, for starters. The idea is that federal dollars come from taxpayers and we are entitled to know how they are spent. The CBC could help this process and take a step toward achieving its stated goal by encouraging the Pres-

ident to do an Executive Order requiring that all bid contracts for the trillions of dollars under these two acts alone, be advertised in local newspapers of general circulation. The following are two specific reasons: One, all of America is not on the internet, so many are excluded from notice of such bids carrying dollars and job opportunities for the very people who are left out; Two, such an Executive Order not only reaches Main Street, but the neighborhoods surrounding Main Street and truly delivers job opportunities which helps the local community papers remain “trusted messengers” at a time of fake news and diminishing newspapers. Such an effort, bringing our 2000 plus community newspapers into

the process, would also include our 200 plus local Black newspapers and help all our communities. The Congressional Black Caucus must become a more visible supporter of the Black Press, which has supported and reported on the Caucus since its inception and at times when no one else did. This is not a criticism, but a plan of action that can be implemented with a stroke of the President’s pen, if we ask and pursue. You can write to the Dr. John E. Houston Style Magazine, always at the forefront of crucial narratives, unveils the motivations behind one leader’s perspective on this matter. Our focal point hinges on a powerful belief: decisions surrounding war and peace should be guided by individual conscience. This ethos accentuates the importance of laying the foundation for peace right from the inception of conflict. Mere victories in battle, without establishing lasting peace, only set the stage for more conflicts in the future. A notable absence in the resolution was the mention of the two-state solution – a pivotal concept viewed by many as essential for sustained peace in the region. Similarly, the aid necessary for the Palestinian people, which plays a crucial role in ensuring tranquility, was not addressed. Echoing this sentiment was President Biden’s address to the nation of Israel on October 18th. Our focal leader had, in fact, taken a proactive stance by penning an articulate letter to the Foreign Affairs Committee on October 12th, 2023, detailing
the well-being of the Palestinian populace. The suggested additions encompassed: 1.
A fervent desire for a lasting peace between Israel and Palestine.
2.
A commitment to the two-state solution as the optimal pathway to peace.
3.
A deep concern and empathy for the suffering of innocent individuals on both sides.
4.
A resolve for extending humanitarian aid to the Palestinian populace.

LOCAL: Early Voting Enthusiasm Soars in Houston

n Monday (October 23rd), thousands flocked to 68 Early Vote Polls across Harris County, marking the first day of Early Voting, fueled by the determination to elect the first new mayor and controller in eight years. They were eager to cast their votes in favor of five at-large and 11 distinct district city council races, along with some Houston ISD School Board races, propositions, bonds, and 14 state constitutional amendments. During the 12-hour window from 7 am to 7 pm, 12,740 individuals exercised their voting rights across Harris County, and an additional 3,2989 mail-in ballots were recorded. This impressive turnout totaled 16,029 participants on this first day of Early Voting compared to the corresponding day four years ago on October 21st, when there were 7,973 voters at the polls and 5,407 mail-in votes recorded. It's important to note that during the previous election, an incumbent mayor was in the running. With a bustling race featuring 18 candidates vying for the position of Houston Mayor due to Mayor Syl-
vester Turner's term limit, the West Gray Multi-Service Center, located near downtown and the Montrose area, proved to be the busiest Early Voting poll. It witnessed the arrival of 874 eager voters, surpassing the 763 voters from 2019. Edward Pollard, the City Council Member representing District J, was actively engaged in mobilizing people to the polls, leveraging his longstanding commitment to his district and its residents. Campaigners were on hand
and the appeal of voting in the first open District E City Council race in a decade, following Dave Martin's Special Election win after Mike Sullivan's departure to become Harris County Tax Collector, attracted voters to these locations. The District E race features Martina Lemond Dixon, who made history by becoming the first minority woman to serve as a Humble ISD Trustee and then ascended to the role of Humble ISD Board President. encils, pens, notebooks, crayons, scissors, and rulers --- these are just a few of the many supplies essential to helping students learn, study and grow. While Entergy Texas is best known for providing power to communities in Southeast Texas, the electric company is equally dedicated to powering education. To help set up students for a successful school year, the company partnered with the United Way of Greater Houston to

provide $165,000 worth of much-needed school supplies for all six Montgomery County school districts – Conroe ISD, New Caney ISD, Magnolia ISD, Montgomery ISD, Splendora ISD, and Willis ISD. “Back-to-school needs can be costly, especially when many families in our communities are already facing financial challenges,” said Eliecer Viamontes, president and CEO of Entergy Texas. “By partnering with United Way

of Greater Houston, we’re able to ease the burden of school supply shopping for teachers, students and families, providing the foundation for a strong education and a brighter future.” According to the most recent data from the United Way ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) report, 24% of individuals and families in Montgomery County struggle to afford basic monthly necessities. Sending a child back to school places added pressure on the family

budget, with a 2023 Deloitte study finding that the U.S. average back to school spending is $596 per child including school supplies, clothes and required technology. Considering these factors, resources such as school supplies can be helpful for many students and families. It is estimated that this initiative will positively impact 50,000 students and families, with a total of 30,000 pounds of supplies donated. “Partnering with Entergy Texas to support our teachers and students in Montgomery County is a wonderful illustration of United Way’s mission to connect people with possibility,” said Amanda McMillian, president and CEO, United Way of Greater Houston. “Education creates possibility, so whether it’s after-school programs or school supplies, we want to help young people succeed.” Entergy Texas and United Way volunteers helped sort and pack supplies before hand-delivering the materials to classrooms in Montgomery County Wednesday. All six school districts will receive supplies before the end of October, and each district will determine how to best distribute the supplies throughout the year.

n the heart of Houston, two resilient spirits stand tall, showing the world what true courage and unity look like. Vamekia and Vatrecia Gayfield, identical twins, have weathered many storms together. Their most challenging battle was with breast cancer, diagnosed only four months apart. Today, they wear their survivor badges with honor, reminding everyone of the power of sisterhood and early detection. Vamekia, older by just three minutes, loves to jest about her slight age advantage. But when it came to their health journey, it was Vatrecia who first faced the diagnosis in December 2021. What began as a small discomfort led her to Harris Health services, where a mammogram revealed the harsh reality. “When the biopsy came in, I realized life was about to take a turn,” Vatrecia expressed. While she prepared for a Belize getaway, her stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis demanded immediate attention. Six rigorous months of chemotherapy followed her return to Houston, marked by hurdles like heart complications and a subsequent hysterectomy. In a twist of fate, Vamekia, too,
discovered signs of breast cancer by March 2022. Diagnosed with stage 1, the duo braced themselves for a shared battle. Amidst this turbulence, Vamekia shared uplifting news - she was expecting! “Knowing I was about to become an aunt gave me strength,” said Vatrecia. Little Ryan Kinsley Gayfield’s arrival in December was a beacon of hope amidst their challenges. Their shared experience brought the twins even closer. Vamekia recalled, “We always had each other’s backs, but this journey deepened our bond.” With a family history linked to the BRCA gene, the sisters were proactive about their health, undergoing hysterectomies to reduce future risks. For Vatrecia, this decision was heart-wrenching, “It was a tough choice, especially as I don’t have children. exas Southern University is set to launch a new institute aimed at increasing participation in the electoral process with the support of a $990,000 grant from Houston Endowment Inc. The Institute for Voter and Civic Engagement, led by TSU Professor and EMPA program founder Dr. Michael O. Adams, will target students and staff. It will also coordinate university activities with community groups and conduct an independent evaluation of the project. As a condition of the grant, Dr. Adams has already raised more than $10,000. With total funding of $1 million, the Institute for Voter and Civic Engagement’s objective is to promote voter and civic participation among students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. The Institute's primary goals are outlined as follows: 1. Increase electoral participation: Through dynamic campaigns, engaging events and comprehensive trainings, the institute will encourage increased participation in the election and voting process among students, faculty, staff, and community members. 2. Empower Historically Excluded Groups: By fostering a campus culture that empowers historically

How do you convince an employer to give you the coveted position over another well-qualified candidate? The answer starts with your resume and your initial interview. That topic was front and center at Emancipation Park. About 20 participants from Big Brothers Big Sisters sat and listened intently inside the Lift Zone at the historic park in Houston’s Third Ward. A Lift Zone is a free, WiFi-connected space typically located in community centers. The event engaged the young adults in the BBBS program, equipping them with essential tools as they prepare to enter college or the workforce. The important conversation was part of Comcast Texas’ Lift Zone Learning Series – an innovative approach to provide skills-based trainings to help individuals empower their careers. The most recent session focused on resume building techniques, mock-interview coaching and the fundamentals of networking. The participants were part of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Technology Career Awareness & Digital Technology Skills Program. The two-hour class was led by James Cabarrus, a seasoned and skilled professional who helps employees build and grow their careers at Comcast. “Sharing my knowledge and experience with this enthusiastic audience was
an absolute pleasure. I can’t help but feel humbled by the positive feedback I received. Seeing their eagerness to learn and grow was truly inspiring!” Cabarrus said. “During the session, we delved deep into the art of crafting an impactful resume, capturing recruiters’ attention and showcasing our unique skill sets effectively. We explored strategies to ace interviews – from mastering common interview questions to nailing behavioral and situational inquiries. Additionally, we touched upon the fundamentals of leadership, discussing key principles that empower individuals to take charge and make a positive impact in any role. n a nail-biting finish to Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, the Texas Rangers displayed their dominance, securing a clear 11-4 triumph over the Houston Astros. This significant victory sees the Rangers heading to the World Series for the third instance, their first since 2011. The series, however, was filled with unexpected twists and turns. Under the bright lights of Globe Life Field, Astros’ star, Jose Altuve, delivered a moment to remember during Game 5. arris Health announced today that it received a $500,000 sponsorship from Cigna Healthcare to expand the system’s Food Rx Program, a novel initiative supporting people who are food insecure and living with a chronic disease such as Type 2 diabetes. The funds will allow Harris Health to offer a new, more convenient approach to getting food to its high-risk patients: refrigerated food lockers. Harris Health currently offers three standalone Food Farmacy sites – mini-stores that stock an array of nutritious fruits, vegetables, canned foods and meats – within three of its healthcare facilities. The addition of the food lockers will allow it to open Food Farmacy locations in other sites that are currently without space. For patients who seek healthcare at these facilities, the food lockers are a way to increase their access to the Food Rx Program. “The support and confidence in our program by Cigna Healthcare speaks volumes about what Harris Health is achieving for the well-being of our patients,” says Chethan Bachireddy, MD, chief health officer, Harris Health. “We understand that food is medicine, and that if our patients don’t have access to healthy foods, they are less likely to be healthy and more likely to suffer from diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.”

The two-year sponsorship will cover the cost and operation of the lockers, including installation, annual maintenance, software, cellular routers, antennas, and other expenses. Each locker can accommodate refrigerated and freezer items, and the locker kiosk will allow patients to scan a QR code from their phone to pick up the food. Each locker can maintain the 30 pounds of food given to patients, provide 24-hour access and is available in language preferences of English and Spanish. Since the start of the Food Farmacy Program in May 2019, nearly 6,400 patients have been served, accounting for more than 22,300 patient visits and 673,000 pounds of food.

Currently, eligible patients for the program have a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis, with an A1c level above 7 on the glycemic scale, and report food insecurity. Patients are given a “prescription” for up to 30 pounds of free food every two weeks. They also get one-on-one nutrition education, receive lessons on cooking and portion control, and are regularly contacted for follow-up care. They are enrolled in the program for nine months (18 visits).
“Our clinical and population health teams have developed a novel approach to help our patients improve their diabetes through providing nutritious foods, clinic visits and health education.
