COMMENTARY
America’s Greatest Athletes Are Standing Up By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
T
he greatest athletes in America are standing up for justice at a critical time. Despite unprecedented, multiracial demonstrations across the country protesting police violence against African Americans, the horrors keep on coming. Last week, Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back by a policeman in Kenosha, Wisconsin. As the anger has grown, some of the protests have been marred by vandalism and looting. Now armed right-wing militia groups are escalating the tensions. In Kenosha, two demonstrators were murdered and one wounded by a 17-year-old Trump supporter illegally wielding an assault weapon. It is into this cauldron that the professional basketball players of the NBA stood up, forcing a suspension of the playoffs, to support the call for justice. Their example was picked up by others - the WNBA, baseball players, tennis champions like Naomi Osaka and more. This takes courage. Great athletes are taught to focus on their sport and to ignore their power in the culture. Owners, agents, managers and fans see them as entertainment, not as citizens or leaders. Yet the very God-given gifts, discipline and skills that make a great athlete contribute to their capacity for leadership. In the Old Testament, little David honed his skill with a sling. When an oppressive horde led by a giant named Goliath threatened the Hebrew people, David stepped up, hurling the stone that slew the giant and saved his people. Now America’s greatest athletes

are standing up, calling this country to change. They know that they will face criticism and abuse. They know that they could be risking their careers and livelihood. When LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh and the Miami Heat players stood up in response to the death of Trayvon Martin, Americans across the country took notice. The same is true now as the current athletes focus on Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Jacob Blake and the others they name. They know the risks, but they also know that when they leave the court or playing field and return to their families, they are just another black person to the police, and must worry about how to protect their sons and daughters, sisters and brothers, or even themselves. Both Sterling Brown of the Milwaukee Bucks and Thabo Sefolosha of the Houston Rockets were victims of police lawlessness. Here the example and leadership of LeBron James has been critical. Athletes across the world look up to him. When LeBron uses his platform to speak out - even in the face of insults from the president and others - he sets a tone and an example for others. In my opinion, he uses his gifts and platform so responsibly because it is his way of thanking God by serving others. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. used his gifts and platform to change the culture. Today, athletes are using their commitment to call this country to its senses. Great athletes have often been pacesetters. When Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson stood up to racially
September 03 – September 09, 2020
biased and arbitrary social mores, he impacted the culture. When Joe Lewis defeated Max Schmeling, he pummeled the entire Nazi theory and racist ideology. When Jesse Owens became the world’s fastest man at the Berlin Olympics, Adolf Hitler wouldn’t shake his hand, but when Owens came home, he told me President Roosevelt wouldn’t shake his hand either. Jackie Robinson broke the racial barrier in baseball and bore the physical and psychological scars from doing it. At the height of his career, Muhammad Ali, became a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War, and paid the price of years stolen from his career. Every athlete should be grateful to Curt Flood for ending the reserve clause and gaining athletes the right to free agency to negotiate the best deal they could. Colin Kaepernick launched his nonviolent campaign against police killing of black people four years ago that has cost him his career. The athletes had to stop business as usual to gain attention. They have been in intense meetings figuring

out how they can most be effective. They understand that the murders can’t go on; the system must change. They are calling on others to join them. They are putting their time and their resources on the line. They’ve now convinced NBA owners to turn their arenas into polling places where people might vote safely. Their actions have already had effect. It is too easy for cynical politicians and entrenched interests to turn attention from the injustice to the excesses that mar those protesting it. The players have forced our attention back to the injustice and to the core demand that Black Lives Matter. For that, they deserve our respect and our support. You can write to the Rev. or 115 years, providing aid in times of need is the cornerstone of HEB’s Helping Here philosophy, which promises to stand by communities during times of crisis. As communities across southeast Texas and Louisiana start to recover from the devastating impact of Hurricane Laura, our Partners and disaster response teams have mobilized to provide food, water, and other means of support to those in need. Last Friday, the H-E-B Mobile Kitchen and a team of Partners deployed from San Antonio to take food and supplies to communities in southeast Texas. Over the coming days, H-E-B Partners will serve hot meals from the Mobile Kitchen and pass out needed items such as water and ice. The H-E-B Mobile Kitchen will setup and stage on the property at the corner of MacArthur Dr. and 28th Street in Orange. Throughout the coming days, the H-E-B Mobile Kitchen will pass out water, ice and serve hot meals for breakfast from 8-10 a.m. and dinner from 4-6 p.m. We continue to adhere to our strict COVID protocols in our stores as well as with response efforts in the community, to best protect the safety, health and well-being of our Partners, customers and neighborhoods. At the Mobile Kitchen staging location, H-E-B Partners, wearing gloves and masks, will provide contactless service by loading meals and supplies into vehicles. People without vehicles must practice social distancing and wear masks or facial coverings when picking up supplies. Staying true to helping our neighbors in need, we’ve worked closely with Feeding America to identify food banks in Louisiana in need of support. Through this partnership, H-E-B has committed more than $75,000 in financial contributions to support efforts at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana, Food Bank of Central Louisiana, Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana, and Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana (Monroe). We will continue to stay close with these organizations to assess future needs throughout the recovery. www.HEB.com

COLON CANCER: Why Its Taking More Black Men and When Should We Begin Screening
he entertainment world was in shock this past weekend as the news of actor Chadwick Boseman, who played many iconic characters such as Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, James Brown, and most notably, Black Panther in the Marvel superhero movies, died of colon cancer at the young age of 43. His death brings to light the discrepancies in the screening of Black men and colon cancer. African Americans have the highest rates of colon cancer (also known as colorectal cancer). We face a 20 percent higher risk of developing colon cancer and a 45 percent higher mortality rate than any other race. Although this disease is the third cause of cancer-related deaths in the Black community, it’s highly preventable. BlackDoctor.org spoke with several medical professionals to see what can be done to lower the risk of colon cancer. Dr. Strick Woods, gastroenterologist based in Bridgeport, CT, says that screening is the first step towards Black men lowering their risk. The American College of Gastroenterologists recommends Black men be screened starting at age 45 – five years earlier than whites. The reason? Colon cancer is often diagnosed in African Americans at a younger age. Dr. Woods says the current compliance rate for colonoscopies is at a mere 38 percent. African Americans have a notably low screening rate which puts us at an adverse risk for developing colon cancer. New guidelines also recommend that African Americans get screened at age 40 if you have a family history of the disease. Jessica Iannotta is a registered dietitian and certified specialist in oncology nutrition (CSO). The healthy lifestyle guru says that a lifestyle of dieting and exercise can also get Black men back on track for success. Of course, we know that things like candy and soda contain lots of sugar, but other foods like tomato sauce and yogurt contain secret sugars and salts that are detrimental to the increased risk of cancer. The dietitian urges the brothers to try out new vegetables, fruits, grains, and legumes. March was dedicated National Colorectal

Chadwick Boseman with wife – Taylor Simone Ledward Cancer Awareness month in the United States in February 2000 by President Clinton and has since become a rallying point for the colon cancer community. “Kale and quinoa get a lot of attention, but there are lots of healthy, delicious, and inexpensive foods to enjoy. There are so many types of food out there, even picky eaters will find a few things they like.” I know we love a big juicy steak but too much is where the problem lies, according to Iannotta. Research suggests a link between red meat and processed meats, and increased risk of cancer. She says that, “by eating smaller portion sizes of red meat and not eating meat at every meal, you can cut your risk while still enjoying foods you love.” It’s important to get a sweat in 30 minutes a day according to the American Institute of Cancer Research. So grab a couple of the guys in the neighborhood and toss around a football for an hour or so before settling in for the evening.

Jessica offers us two immediate things Black men can do to lower their risk of cancer. 1. Divide your plate into three sections and fill two of those sections with things like fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. Lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains have been shown to have inherent cancerfighting properties and help maintain a healthy body weight. A healthy weight is a great factor protecting you against cancer, but you don’t want to lose weight overnight. 2. Make a doctor’s appointment and get your vitamin D levels checked. Getting enough vitamin D has been linked to cancer prevention and African Americans are more likely to have low levels of this important vitamin. Not only do African Americans have the shortest survival rate of any racial or ethnic group in the United States for most cancers, but we also have

hadwick Boseman was more than just a movie star. We need to only look to the outpouring of grief over his untimely death to know that the "Black Panther" star was influential beyond the screen. Portraying T'Challa, one of the world's most beloved Black superheroes, Boseman helped break box office records. But he also came to embody
something that people are just now starting to wrap their minds and hearts around in the aftermath of his death. Because Boseman got to hear firsthand what his work meant to people, you could see what that meant to him. Love is why we grieve so intensely for a star who burned for such a short period of time, but was the brightest.

f you want a president that cares about Black lives, you must first have a president that cares. And it is painfully obvious that the only thing Donald Trump cares about is…himself. America has had a long painful, hurtful, and shameful history with racism. Over the years the way it has been done has changed making some think racism had been erased from the fabric of this county. However, those who have been victimized by its ugly face know all too well that racism is very much alive. Instead of banning people of color from voting, stricter requirements were put in place like the enforcement of voter ID laws. White men walk around free after killing unarmed Black men while jails across the country are overcrowded with Black men serving sentences that don’t match the crime. Black men are not being hung from trees by white men hiding behind sheets but are just openly killed in broad daylight in front of anyone watching and recording. This is America in which we live. What does the president have to say about this America? Absolutely nothing. Well, let me be fair. He has praised those on the other side of the violence for being “good people.” He also has said he felt terrible for anybody that goes through that referring to shooting of Jacob Blake at a Kenosha peaceful protest. He hopes “they come up with the right answer.” Excuse me but isn’t that supposed to be your job? No other president has ever had the lack luster response that this president has had. The New York Times pointed out the differences between Trump and his predecessors. In 1991, a video was seen round the world of Rodney King being brutally beaten by Los Angeles police officers that left him with permanent brain damage. A then-President George Bush responded by saying, “Those terrible scenes stir us all to demand an end to gratuitous violence and brutality. Law enforcement officials cannot place themselves above the law that they are sworn to defend.” He went on to add that it sickened him. President Bill Clinton saw many incidents of police brutality with one of the biggest newsmakers being the death

Jacob Blake Amadou Diallo, who shot 19 times by four New York police officers. Clinton was very blunt with his response. “I don’t pretend for a moment to second-guess the jury. But I know most people in America of all races believe that if it had been a young white man in an all-white neighborhood, it probably wouldn’t have happened.” The violence continued under President Barack Obama’s administration with the deaths of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and the St. Emanuel Church members at Bible Study. President Obama recognized that it was not a “matter of us comparing the value of lives.” He continued, “This is recognizing that there is a particular burden that is being placed on a group of our fellow citizens. And we should care about that. We can’t dismiss it.” Now we roll into Trump’s America with the murders of Stephon Clark, Botham Jean, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. Now we have Jacob Blake, who was shot seven times in the back while his three children watched and he is now paralyzed. Adding more insult to this senseless crime in the murder of two and serious injury of one

Kyle Rittenhouse during a peaceful protest a after 17-yearold Kyle Rittenhouse opened fired on the crowd in the name of “defending himself” and “protecting his property.” Since this incident, Trump has not given a response that showed any empathy. His silence is making others believe that it is ok to hide behind their badges. It is ok to fund the defense of people who murder individuals because of their skin color. It is something that one writer, Erik Cork, calls “whitewash worship.” To WHITE EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS: Take an honest, hard look at yourselves in the mirror. Your six-figure financial support of cold-blooded killer, Kyle Rittenhouse, who showed up in Kenosha with the intent to murder peaceful protestors, REVEALS your evil & satanically inspired racism. Your twisted & tortured logic that pervades the empty hearts of your prejudiced parishioners & so-called “people of faith” shows the mean-spirited & maniacal obsession of “preservation & protection of race” in the diabolical minds of members in your cocky congregations who feel justified donating dollars to yet another Dylan Roof. It REVEALS you have zero compassion for people of color. It absolutely DEMONSTRATES (without a doubt) that you worship your WHITENESS, your PRIVILEGE & your ill-gotten POWER throughout history & time. Your continued contributions & your abysmal actions show that you AGREE with your divisive & demented president & bigoted Republicans that “Kyle The Patriotic Kid” was just “defending himself” & the property of local

strangers he couldn’t care less aboutby showing up in a sea of heartbroken protestors with an AR-15 assault rifle. Did you praise God when police on the scene applauded him & gave him fresh cold water to drink as a reward for the bigoted bullets he fired into a crowd of people who are sick & tired of being “sick & tired of being victims” of excessive force & police brutality? Do you dance in the aisles of your pristine temples when arrogant police REFUSE to peacefully de-escalate civil disagreements when Black folks are involved? Do you pray for the police to show restraint when a minority motorist has the NERVE to ask a White law enforcement officer a simple question? Your financial support for a smiling assassin PROOVES that you pretend & profess to have “color-blindness” that is disingenuous & untrue - because you are doing a horrible job of real justice. You are putting forth a hypocritical display of HATE and/ or apathetic INDIFFERENCE toward Blacks - as opposed to honoring the love & compassion of Jesus Christ. It is apparently & excruciatingly OBVIOUS that you White Evangelical so-called “Christians” identify yourselves more with the Ku Klux Klan & neo-Nazis than you do with equality, freedom, liberty & justice FOR ALL. Your genocidal generosity & your unwavering support for a ruthless teenaged killer SHOWS you have severe difficulty in comprehending & understanding - let alone embracing, endorsing & preaching in your pulpits & public social media platforms of White worship that when someone says “BLM,” we are NOT talking about a “movement.” We are talking about our ACTUAL LIVES. The people he killed looked like YOU, but they had to courage & compassion to show support for Black Lives actually MATTERING. Your MONEY is a blood trail of EVIDENCE showing the world that your allegiance is to WHITENESS - and not RIGHTEOUSNESS. Let that sink in... then pray for your own sinister souls to be saved from your own selfish WRETCHEDNESS each time you donate to a GoFundMe for a cruel & callus kid who SHOT PEOPLE in the face - POINT BLANK. Ladies and gentlemen this is why we ALL must vote come November 3rd. If we want to make America the greatest it can be, we have to first elect a man who can be great and do great things. Go Vote!

s the Houston Texans complete their final week of 2020 Training Camp. One thing stands out during the rigorous drills and scrimmages the players go through. There are new voices being heard as they head into their first game against the reigning Super Bowl Champions Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday September 10, 2020 to start the entire NFL season. There will be different signal callers on both sides of the ball this year for the Texans as head coach and general manager Bill O’ Brien decided to hand the full playbook to offensive coordinator Tim Kelly. While associate head coach and former defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel has handed the whistle to Anthony Weaver. O’Brien will still have some say so in the offense
but is completely confident in handing the play calling over to Kelly. “Look, I have a lot of faith in Tim and the offensive staff,” said O’Brien during his morning press conference. “I do my best to let those guys coach and then try to give them my vision for the team and for each unit and I think it’s going well. I just think they communicate really well. I think it’s going really well.” Kelly echoed his coach’s sentiments when it came to being prepared to take on more responsibility this year along with assistant and former Texans backup quarterback T.J. Yates who Kelly speaks highly of when it comes to his work with franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson. “T.J. has been able to come in
there and really dissect that position (quarterback) in terms of the amount of detail that he would go into a game plan within terms of his preparation, comparing the different styles in the ways that they prepare,” Kelly said. Houston was in the top-15 in total offense last year averaging 362 yards per game with 236 of those yards coming off the arm of Watson. With all starting offensive lineman coming back and the additions of RB David Johnson and WR’s Brandin Cooks and Randall Cobb, Kelly should have no problem moving the chains this year. No one was more deserving to take over for Crennel than defensive line coach Anthony Weaver. Heading into his fifth season on the coaching staff, Weaver proved himself by being able to get top-level performances out of some of the greatest talent to ever touch the field including future Hall of Fame defensive lineman J.J. Watt. That level
of production will get you praises from O’Brien every time. “Weaver does a good job, said his head coach. “He’s really smart. He’s got a real good rapport with the players. He’s played in the league; he’s coached in the league. He’s coached under some really good defensive coordinators. Obviously, Rex Ryan and Romeo Crennel. I think he’s taken something from all of those guys and he’s able to put his own stamp on it and that’s what he’s trying to do.”
