lash mobs. Teenagers use social media -- tweets and instant messages --to coordinate sudden gatherings, to party, to demonstrate, and sometimes to rob or terrorize. And now, Chicago is alarmed as black teenagers from the South Side of this still-racially divided city have begun to use flash mobs in crimes on the largely white northern beaches and shopping district. Merchants decry the threat to the tourist trade; the police chief vows to arrest the perpetrators; more police are deployed in critical areas. Those who break the law should be held liable for their crimes -- from the most powerful banker defrauding borrowers to the teenager robbing tourists. For the poor, personal responsibility is a necessity, not a luxu-
Engage or Encage ry. That’s why I spend so much time talking with young people about the drive it takes to rise above their circumstances. You may have been born in the ghetto, but the ghetto was not born in you. But we need a larger discussion, not simply about the responsibility of teens growing up on hard streets, but the responsibility of the community to the next generation. Teenage unemployment across the country is at 25 percent; in Chicago, it is more than 27 percent. Among black male teenagers, it approaches 50 percent. In Chicago and other cities, summer programs are among the victims of the budget squeeze. Summer employment programs are down; summer recreation and instruction programs are down. Children who could get two meals a day at school now find themselves scrambling for food in the summer. Wall Street excesses blow up the economy. The ensuing Great Recession devastates millions of middle class families. Jobs are lost; homes go to foreclosure. Families are divided. Children are the victims. Yet, when it comes to dealing with the budget crisis caused by the recession, children’s programs are cut, while bankers are bailed out and their bonuses set record levels. Young teenagers are not the only ones who act irresponsibly. These young, impoverished children are like dry kindling. Any spark can cause a conflagration. Without jobs or summer programs, they are often hungry, short
of cash and bored. Mostly, they turn on each other, with violence likely to rise this summer among African Americans and Latinos in poor neighborhoods. But sometimes, as in the recent flash mob incidents, they refuse to be caged in -- then suddenly they are a threat and problem. Reporting in the Chicago SunTimes, Esther Cepeda quoted Hector Escalera, a Cook County juvenile probation officer who covers the impoverished neighborhood of Little Village, a neighborhood with few parks and 50,000 kids under 25 that has already been the scene of several murders: “I strongly believe this is going to be one of the worst summers ever,” Escalera said, “We have a lot of issues in the community, and if we don’t provide youth with mental health, education and work opportunities, we are going to lose the battle.” When Chicago made its bid for the Olympics, its youth violence was a cloud on the application. So the city developed a plan to ensure that athletes and fans

he political sideshows known as Donald Trump and Sarah Palin recently met in one of the busiest spots on the planet New York’s Time Square – for a little conversation and pizza. No one is really sure what the two discussed…perhaps they marveled at all they have in common. On the surface, the two couldn’t seem more different. Trump is a business mogul, known for his real estate prowess. Palin is a small town politician who was thrust into the spotlight when she was picked as Senator John McCain’s running mate during the 2008 elections. But look closer and you’ll see that the two seemed to be cut from the very same attention seeking cloth. Palin, who is the middle of her mystery “One Nation” bus tour of America, and the tycoon first met at his upscale home then ventured out for their “Pizza Summit”. With the media watching, Palin said she and Trump both share a love for America and “a desire to see our economy put back on the right track.” Their similarities run much deeper. Trump and Palin have both become distractions in the just getting started Presidential race, making outrageous claims and creating political controversies that are forcing their colleagues in the Republican party to keep their distance. From Palin’s cross-hairs slip up to Trump’s continued challenge of President Obama’s credentials, the two have managed to keep themselves in the news. Many of their comments have been so

would be safe. Chicago will now devote more money to policing its streets, and to locking up teenagers who violate the law. But wouldn’t it be responsible to develop a plan to engage these young people rather than simply to encage them? Unemployed people of all ages struggle with despair and depression. Young people graduating from high school into the worst jobs market since the Great Depression see their hopes crushed, their dreams shattered. They are dry sticks in a parched land, ready to burn. We can spend a lot of money putting out the fires that are certainly to come. But wouldn’t we be wiser to pick up those sticks, mold them, and put them to work building something of value? Does the community have no responsibility to its young? You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson care of this newspaper or by e-mail at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. outrageous that one can only assume they are making them for the sole purpose of getting attention. Trump, after all, and his show “The Apprentice” has been a reality star staple for the last several years; Palin is a newbie to the scene but seems to be capitalizing on her fifteen minutes with television appearances coming one after the other. When you have two people who seem so addicted to the media, it’s no surprise that they’ll do anything to keep the cameras focused on them. Another similarity the two share: confusion around just how serious the two are about politics. Outside of his rabid supporters, very few people seriously thought Trump was going to run for the nation’s highest office in 2012. Many feel the same about Palin; they don’t know if her tour will end with her tossing her hat in the ring or if she’s setting herself up for her next reality show. It is ironic that Trump and Palin both claim to love America so much when they, by their actions and words, are guilty of distracting the country from focusing on issues that matter. Instead of covering Trump’s rants or Palin’s incoherent sound bites, the media should be shedding light on more serious concerns, like education or the economy. But how can they when you have two of the biggest media hogs feeding you with content day after day? We can only hope that media fascination with the two will die down soon. Then, we can all begin to talk about things that matter. Share this story at www.stylemagazine.com.

WTF? Comic Tracy Morgan Has Offensive Material?
roland martin
Commentary
W
hy is comedian and “30 Rock” star Tracy Morgan issuing a mea culpa for saying nasty, vicious and vile things during a stand-up routine? Isn’t that par for the course of a comedian? Oh, I can’t wait to see the hate mail pile into my box for supposedly defending Morgan, who ripped into gays and lesbians during a stand-up act last week in Tennessee, even suggesting in his bit “how he’d stab his son to death if he said he was gay.” The moment the saw crossed the wires, I naturally cringed. Who in their right mind would say such a thing about his gay son? No person in his or her right mind! Except for a comedian who is accustomed to saying shocking things on stage to get a laugh. The comedy routine picked up steam in the social media world when Kevin Rogers, who attended the Nashville show, ripped Morgan in a Facebook post entitled, “Why I No Longer Like Tracy Morgan.” Rogers says the Morgan stand-up routine crossed the line and that Morgan’s demeanor changed. Once word of the routine spread, it lead to calls for action against Morgan by Human Rights Campaign, the largest gay and lesbian civil rights organization, and even a mea culpa from the theatre where it was held. In their statement, Fred Sainz, vice president of communications for Human Rights Campaign, said: “Hateful remarks that mock youth suicides and the very real emotional and sometimes physical bullying LGBT kids face on a daily basis have no place in a comedy routine.” Morgan, clearly sensing a storm brewing, issued an apology. “I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville,” he said. “I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club, this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.” Yet whether we want to admit to it or not, it is the DNA of those in the chosen profession of comedy to say stuff that no one could get away with if they weren’t on a stage. Oh yes, you’ll say, “But Roland, you criticized Michael Richards for using the N-word.” Sure did. What’s the difference? I said then and now that Richards directly attacked an audience member and his use of the N-word had nothing to do with his routine. If it was in the context of a routine, it would not have been received the same. Have other white comedians used the N-word in a routine? Yep. Comedic genius George Carlin used the N-word in a famous skit where he talks about the context of who uses the N-word and why. Some on my followers on Facebook and Twitter echoed the Human Rights Campaign statement by saying no one should make jokes about murder or violence from the stage. Really? So, I asked them: “Go listen to some of your favorite comedians and tell me if they said racist, sexist, homophobic stuff about any group. Go ahead and update/tweet it. I think many of you would be shocked and amazed that you laughed hysterically at some of the most sexist, homophobic, racist stuff.” I then went through my iPod and came across Chris Rock’s “OJ, I Understand” bit from his special, “Roll With the New.” Rock said that he understood that O.J. killed his wife, Nicole Simpson, and friend, Ron Goldman, because he saw them driving
around in a Ferrari that O.J. bought. “I’m not saying he should have killed her, but I understand,” said Rock, as the audience exploded to laughter and applause. Wait. Chris Rock stood on stage that he “understood” O.J. for killing two people? Yep. Said it in a comedy routine on stage. The late Robin Harris, who has been hailed as a comedic genius, has a bit on his CD, “Bebe’s Kids,” entitled “Hate My Wife.” Harris rails against his wife for being ugly “for no reason at all,” later saying, “I be hoping I go home some night the ambulance be pulling her ass out. All they do is just ask me to review the body. Is that the bitch? Yea!” Wait. Robin Harris stood on stage to denounce his wife because she was ugly and proceeded to say that he hope he could come home and find her dead? Sure did, and the audience was gasping for air because of the laughter. On his comedy CD, “Down South Somewhere,” Steve Harvey has a bit called “Willie Turner,” where he talks about the difference between firing a white worker and a black worker named Willie Turner. Harvey says the white worker will take it in stride, but an on-edge Willie Turner won’t be so accommodating, to the point of saying, “You bet not say what I think you’re about to say. Say it. I’ll burn this mother ... I’ll kill your kids. I’ll kill your kids. I’ll kill your kids, Tom!” Wait. Did Steve Harvey just describe the process of laying off a worker with images of burning the office down and killing the supervisor’s children? Sure did, and the audience cracked up. In the greatest grossing comedy tour in history, “The Kings of Comedy,” Bernie Mac jokes about having a gay 6-year-old nephew that he was raising, calling him a “faggot” and mimicking how he walked and talked. He told him to man up by doing some pushups. At another point in the show, Bernie Mac told the audience about bad children and said, “I’m from the old school; I’ll kick a kid’s ass. When a kid gets 1-years-old, I believe you’ve got the right to hit ‘em in the throat or the stomach.” Bernie Mac even said he would open up his own day care center that is totally designed to beat a kid who gets out of line. “When you come to pick your kid up and he’s got a knot on the corner of his head, and you say, ‘What happened to my son?’ I’ll tell ya. I took a hammer and slapped the fuck out of him! for jumping on my couch.” Wait. Did Bernie Mac openly talk about child abuse? And
WWW.STYLEMAGAZINE.COM
how did the audience respond? They ate it up with tremendous applause. With all of these comedians, we can judge their routines based on what we heard and saw. But with Morgan, all we have of what he said is written, and we can’t judge the context, tone and demeanor ourselves. And there is no doubt that is the same as Rock and Harvey and Bernie Mac and others: Reading what they said is different than seeing or hearing. There isn’t enough space on the Internet to chronicle the number of times a comedian has said nasty and vile things. Some of it leading the audience to fall out laughing or sometimes, or as in the case of Morgan, walk out in protest. If we are to demand an apology for every time a comedian is sexist against men or women, racist or homophobic, we might as well launch a website called www.comediansapologizedaily.com. Say I’m wrong. Fine. Say I’m insensitive to gays and lesbians. Fine. I’ll wait for the usual bigots to say that I’m defending Tracy Morgan because he’s black. Fine. But think for a moment at all the times you’ve laughed at comedians based on the things they had to say. Then ask yourself: Did I laugh, and why? Sorry, if I’m being honest here and not focusing on political correctness. I just believe that many of you would be shocked and amazed that you laughed hysterically at some of the most sexist, homophobic, racist stuff imaginable by comedians of all shapes, sizes, ethnic backgrounds, genders and sexual orientations. Maybe none of us want to accept that as a comedian, Morgan is keenly aware of what society actually thinks, and he simply said it onstage. Isn’t that what comedians have always done? Reflect what society actually thinks, but say it in a forum where we can laugh through our pain. “It ain’t what you say it’s how you say it. It’s jokes. It’s fun. But it’s the truth. In the back of your mind, you be wanting to say this shit sometimes.” Sorry, that’s not my quote. That was Bernie Mac from “The Kings of Comedy.” Roland S. Dr. James C. Watson
“A Devoted Servant”
D
r. James (Jimmy) Chestnut Watson was the youngest of three siblings born to Reed and Grace Ella Chestnut Watson on June 16, 1936 in Trenton, New Jersey. At an early age, Jimmy was instilled by his parents with the creed, “anything worth having is worth working for”. As a result, he began a life of amazing accomplishments. Jimmy loved seeking knowledge and pursued it voraciously. His secondary education was completed at Trenton Central High School; he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and his Medical Degree from Howard University School of Medicine. While at Howard University, he met his first wife, Pauline Thomas and later married. To this union, four daughters were born. He was the first African American intern to complete his medical internship at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana. In 1965, he moved to Houston where he received his Masters Degree in Public Health from the University of Texas at Houston. He also served in the Armed Services and was commissioned as a Captain while serving as Chief of Dispensary Services at Ellington Air Force Base and providing health care to many of the military personnel in the area. Following the completion of his military service, Dr. Watson began private practice in the Sunnyside community. A few years later, he and his business partners purchased the first medical building owned by African Americans. His compassion for the well being of his patients and his fellow man was his greatest accomplishment. Many thought of him as the “country doctor” because he provided quality medical care to those who could not afford it. His personal mission was to treat everyone because he recognized that everyone deserved medical care regardless of their income or economic status. He continued to practice medicine for more than 40 years. A man of many talents, Dr. Watson also became a journalist when he purchased The Informer and Texas Freeman newspaper, which was the oldest African American publication in the city. He was then able to voice his opinions about the plight of African Americans in his editorial column, “The Slingshot”. His passion for sharing medical information was quite apparent when he published an article in the Journal of the National Medical Association about the “Diversity of Values in Health Care Delivery”. He served in numerous other capacities in his community as well. Some of those prestigious positions included: appointed by former Mayor Jim McConn, he was the first African American Director of Public Health (Medical Director) for the City of Houston; Medical Director for the Harris County Sheriff’s Dept. Medical Division; he chaired numerous boards and served in many positions at several Houston area medical facilities including Park Plaza Hospital, Harris County Hospital District and Baylor College of Medicine. He was also an Adjunct/Assistant Professor and taught at colleges/universities including Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Southern University and the University of Texas-School of Public Health. In 1987, James married his wife,
Dr. James C. Watson
Marlene Meyers, who was also a caring medical professional. Together they were a medical team who continued to lovingly care for their patients. Dr. Watson demonstrated his caring in many tangible ways including his long standing commitment to his patients, his community. He continued to demonstrate his “spirit of giving” by helping people in need through his work with the “Jubilee Ministry to the Homeless” at his church, or Haitians who migrated to the U.S. who needed a place to live and employment. He was always there when needed. Dr. Watson truly leaves a legacy of outstanding service to his fellow man. At a young age, he grew to love the Lord and by 1967, he was confirmed in St. James Episcopal Church where he was actively involved in many ministries for 40 years. He served God and his church as a Lay Eucharistic Minister, member of the Vestry and Senior Warden. In his latter years, he was an active member at St. Luke the Evangelist Episcopal Church. In the early 1990’s, Dr. Watson was ordained a priest in the African Orthodox Church, under the tutelage of the Rev. Dr. George Duncan Hinkson. Dr. Watson made his final transition on Monday, May 23, 2011 after a lengthy illness. He is at peace with his Heavenly Father. Celebrating and cherishish his earthly memories include: his loving wife of twenty-four years, Marlene Meyers Watson; daughters, Jamie Lynn Watson, Juliette Grace Watson (Reginald), Paula Watson Jones (James), Debra Watson Islam (Ahmad), and Nechol Henderson (Calvin); grandchildren, Julian Bryce Turner, Jalyn Elise Jones, Julia Elizabeth Jones, James Elliot Jones V, Gabriel Malik Islam, Selena Kathryn Islam, Christopher, Alexandra, and Nyree; great grandson, Isaiah James Williams; beloved sister, Ruby Watson Marshall; mother-in-law, Honorine Meyers; brothers-in-law, Walter and Paul Meyers; nephews, Robert R. Watson, Jr. (Connie) and Ian Meyers; nieces, Beverly Watson Venerable (Ronald), Barbara Marshall-Bailey (Ray), Linda Lorraine Marshall; cousin Bernard Sanders; goddaughter, LaChanda Nicole Landry, and a host of grand nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends. His parents, Reed and Grace Chestnut; brother, Robert R. Watson, Sr.; nephew, John F. Marshall, Jr.; and niece, Susan Marshall Casey preceded him in death.

You’ve got ideas on how to stop poverty, hunger, and other world problems. So what can a kid like you do? Spend some time listening to “Marching For Freedom”, the new audiobook by Elizabeth Partridge, performed by Alan Bomar Jones. You’ll see that you don’t have to be an adult to cause change. important. Joanne Blackmon was badly hurt. Her sister thought she was dead. But when it was over five days later, everyday children like Joanne had helped win the vote. I found a lot of things to love about “Marching for Freedom,” starting with author Elizabeth Partridge’s writing. Partridge doesn’t editorialize in this book; she merely lays out facts and tells the story. She did so, she says in the interview at the end of the last CD, because she was amazed at the pictures she found, taken at the Selma March. And even though this is an audiobook, you won’t miss a one of those pictures. Included in the box with the CDs is a bonus disc filled with that which inspired Partridge to write this book. Be warned: some of them are very moving… Then, the pictures are punctuated with an incredible performance by Alan Bomar Jones, who not only reads Partridge’s words, but who sings the protest songs that accompanied the protesters more than forty-five years ago. “Marching for Freedom” is probably too scary for young kids, but for children ages 10 and up, I think it’s perfect. Start the audio, let them see the pictures, and you’ll easily have their attention.
baffled. Her grandma only wanted to register to vote, but the sign on the courthouse said “closed.” Joann and her grandmother waited and were soon joined by others who wanted to register, too. By the end of the day, a yellow school bus pulled up and Joanne was excited. Only white kids rode the school bus and now they were telling her to hop aboard! It took a few minutes before she realized that she was on her way to jail. Over the next two years, Joanne would be jailed ten more times. Because African American adults had to go to work, it was often up to kids and teenagers to stage protests over Civil Rights. Everybody knew it could be dangerous. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. worried about that, but he also knew that these children could send a powerful message. And that’s what happened in Selma, Alabama, in March of 1965. Hundreds of men, women, and children marched quietly to the Edmund Pettus Bridge to win the right to vote. Joanne was there, along with state troopers, tear gas, cattle prods, and people determined to turn the protesters back. But the protesters held steady. They marched despite the danger and were met with violence, but they didn’t stop. The march was too

Greatest Dads in the World By Jo-Carolyn Goode Editor-at-Large

ads are truly the greatest and everyone thinks that their dad is the best in the world. He is the muscle when daughters need protection. He is the coach when sons need excellence in sports. He is a provider, a financier, and a counselor. He builds up a tough exterior but his children know how to wrap him around their finger. He will do anything and everything for the well-being of his family. He is DAD! With these thoughts in mind Houston Style Magazine asked readers why they think their father is the greatest. What follows are some of the readers’ responses.
Dr. Billy Gilbert and Tiffany Gilbert with their dad Billy Gilbert, Sr. Dr. Billy and Tiffany Gilbert think their father, Billy Gilbert, Sr. is the greatest. He is the man who made them become the successful and well-adjusted adults they are. “The greatest lessons that I have learned from my father have been by example: his quiet, calm, demeanor; his respect for the sacred things in this world (life, death, love for God and family), and his unfailing ability to always keep his word - something every man should strive to do,” wrote Dr. Gilbert. “My sister and I undoubtedly owe our high reaching ambitions and current successful careers to his lofty expectations.” Drawing from the words of President Barack Obama’s book “Dreams of My Father,” Dr. Gilbert continued, “‘It was into my father’s image, the black man, son of Africa, that I’d packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.’ My sister would agree that the same is true for her. We have been fortunate enough to experience the

wisdom and courage of my father over the past 33 years and know this “image” to be the true man.”
Billy Reagins with his daughter Bridget Reagins
Bridget Reagins loves to brag why her dad, Billy Reagins, is great. “I think he is GREAT because he is the first in his family to get both a Bachelor and Master’s degrees. He has overcome many obstacles in his life and he tries everyday to make sure that my mom, sisters and I have a better life than he did as a kid.” Bridget continued, “Not only does he cut the grass and keep our vehicles running, He cooks and cleans too! Though we don’t always see eye-toeye, my dad is still there for me—even though he puts gravy on everything!” (LOL)
Georgia and Kamilah Owens with their dad Rodney Owens Georgia and Kamilah Owens don’t just think their dad, Rodney Owens, is great. They say he is the best. Rodney is the best because he makes pancakes for Georgia’s breakfast and he combs her hair to make her beauti-

ful because her mom leaves really early for work. He takes care of Georgia and her sister and never seems to get tired or complain.” Georgia loves the days when her dad and sister spend the afternoon at the park and zoo. They go to fun places! Besides taking care of Georgia and her sister, Rodney is a big help to his wife as well. When her mom was pregnant with Georgia’s little sister, he took care of their house and made sure everything was nice and clean. He makes sure they always have exactly what they need. Caldwell J. Ned Courtney Ned recalls her dad, Caldwell Ned, as a God fearing man. “My dad was a wonderful person. He was very blessed in his life and continuously thanked God for every day he woke up to see.” A very spiritual man, Mr. Ned loved going to church. As a deacon and a member of the men’s choir, Courtney’s dad was always thrilled to be there, to stand and sing his heart out to God. “My dad’s life was headed down a good path, and it was really heart-breaking when tragedy struck,” expressed Courtney. “But I know when God claimed his life, his path was left incomplete for his three girls to continue. This journey down the road has brought numerous blessings to my family and we thank God for the angel that lies within our hearts. My dad is watching over us and we will not fail to make him proud.” Courtney and her sisters, Morgan and Camryn Ned, remember their dad everyday. Cynthia Ferrell Sample also reflects on the memory of her dad, Bennie Ferrell, as a community servant this Father’s Day. “Dad would go to the market, get cases of fruits and vegetables, which

were too ripe to sell but still good to eat, and give them to our neighbors across the street in the Cuney Homes.” With a smile of pride she said, “He taught me to treat everyone the way I wanted to be treated. “ Her father was one of 16 children who grew up as a poor sharecropper who only finished the 10th grade. After moving to Houston he worked as a chauffeur and yardman in River Oaks, before building a successful catering company (still in operation 52 years later). Mr. Ferrell passed 30 years ago, yet people still tell her stories of his acts of kindness.
Lestine Goode
And last but certainly not least my sisters, Judy Goode and Theresa Walls, speak about our dad, Lestine Goode. Referring to him as one who has more energy, stamina, and determination than many half his age, they write that he is always there for us. He has a listening ear, is to ready advise, and is our incessant cheerleader. He always believes in us and encourages us to soar to new heights. He cares for each of us deeply when we hurt and when we are happy and feel joyous. He is so much to us and we are honored and privileged to call him Daddy.

his Father’s Day, give Dad the royal treatment by creating a feast that combines his two favorite things — the grill and steak. Whether you serve the King Tenderloin with Red Velvet Demi Glace, the Duke of Sirloin with Pub Rub, the Count Strip Loin with Parmesan Crusted Crown, or the Barron of Ribeye with Royal Forest Butter, His Majesty will savor every mouthwatering bite. And when you follow these grilling tips and cook his steaks to perfection, he may very well proclaim you Master of the Grill. Top 5 Tips for Perfect Grilling 1. Clean and pre-heat your grill on high. 2. Lightly oil and season food before you put it on the grill. This
helps the searing process and prevents sticking. 3. Sear the outside of steaks when grilling, using tongs or a spatula to turn the meat. Cover the grill as much as possible during the grilling process to help lock in the great flavor and to prevent flare-ups. 4. Use the 60/40 grilling method. Grill for 60 percent of the time on the first side, then grill 40 percent of the time after you turn over the food. This will give you an evenly cooked product. 5. Place your cooked food on a clean plate and allow to rest for five minutes before serving to retain moisture and juiciness. The Perfect Gift: 2011 Cadillac Escalade 4WD Platinum Hybrid
By Jo-Carolyn Goode Editor-at-Large
B
e it a one-a-day recognition or a one-ayear birthday everyone’s special day comes around. There is the birthday, a special day made even more unique by the kind of celebration. Some may be a surprise to the honoree. Others may be the results of the birthday celebrant dropping hints as to what the perfect gift should be. I fall in the first category. This past weekend I celebrated my birthday and I got one great gift. Without even the slightest clue, the folks at the press fleet company knew exactly what vehicle to bring me, the 2011 Cadillac Escalade 4WD Platinum Hybrid. Happy Birthday to ME! My big gift arrived on 22” chrome aluminum wheels. There was so much chrome I was almost blinded. Most of it covered the unique grille with a lattice of squares enclosed in bold “V” bars. Coupled with the LED headlamps, the front end of the Escalade is the most gorgeous feature of any vehicle I have tested. The eco friendly green “H” strategically placed as to not be ostentatious lets everyone know it is a hybrid model. Its elegance fits in perfectly with the classiness that Cadillac connotes. When the door open of the Escalade Hybrid was opened, I felt like Tiana must have felt when the door to the gilded carriage was opened for her. Power-retract-
able running boards fold out to assist passengers in boarding the SUV. This was a feature my first passenger lo-o-oved and told everyone within her circle. As a mater of fact, she was most vociferous in her praise. While that was her favorite, mine had to be the entertainment system. Most SUVs have flip down 8-inch DVD screens, but my test vehicle was a 2011 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Hybrid. In addition to the overhead DVD screen, there were two 7” DVD screens embedded in the headrests of the backs of the front seats. This translates to backseat passengers having plenty of entertainment options. They may watch and play three different games and/or movies at the same time on difference screens. This feature makes road trips more fun and en-
joyable. Another feature that gets a thumbs up for me is the cup holders that can cool or heat up a favorite beverage. How many times have I left an ice cold drink in the car while I made a quick stop and returned to a drink so weak and warm it was undrinkable! With the 2011 Cadillac Escalade 4WD Platinum Hybrid those days are gone. While a refreshing ice cold drink can cool the internal body; the front seats may cool the buttocks. Second row seats can heat the bottom. These are musthave features to survive the mercurial Texas weather. The 2011 Cadillac Escalade 4WD Platinum Hybrid is massive taking up a oneand-one-half car space in my driveway. Up to 8 passengers can ride comfortably in the 2011
Cadillac Escalade 4WD Platinum Hybrid. Although taller folks may find the third row a little cramped, the luxury of the Escalade balances this negative. Space is also limited for cargo if the 8 seats are up. However, when the third row along with the second row are folded down, there is more than enough cargo space. First and second row passengers will fall in love with the Tehama aniline leather seats that come with distinctive stitching and the embedded Cadillac crest in front, second, and third row seats. I feel more comfortable driving smaller vehicles but I easily adjusted to driving the 2011 Cadillac Escalade 4WD Platinum Hybrid. Driving the Escalade is so smooth; its like floating on a cloud. Steering is well controlled, and switching from the gas to the electric mode is rather effortless. In my test drive, I found fuel economy to be superior to the nonhybrid model. EPA estimates are 20/23 mpg city/highway instead of the 14/20 mpg city/highway of the nonhybrid model. Everyone wants to feel special on their birthday. What made my birthday special was the gift I received, the 2011 Cadillac Escalade 4WD Platinum Hybrid even though it was mine for just a week. Feel special on your birthday and on everyday with the 2011 Cadillac Escalade 4WD Platinum Hybrid. It is base priced at $88, 140.00. Find more information at www.cadillac.com.

Father Knows Best: Fourteen “Pocket Truths” Our Dads Taught Us
ather’s Day is almost here, and dads across the country will soon be celebrated by their families with cookouts, cards, and gifts ranging from homemade artwork to the classic choice: a new tie. As we enjoy the festivities, though, it’s good to take a few moments to reflect on why we’re celebrating in the first place. To put it simply, our fathers are instrumental in shaping our lives—and they deserve our recognition and thanks for their guidance and love! Dr. Justin B. Short and Ben Newman believe that there are certain pieces of wisdom that most patriarchs, along with other father figures, tend to share with their children. These “pocket truths” have stuck around and proliferated for a reason. Read on to get a fresher course on fourteen truths our dads taught us. The first impression is made in the first 90 seconds. You may remember your father straightening his collar, squaring his shoulders, and putting on a smile before he entered a room. So don’t underestimate the value of a wellgroomed appearance, a firm handshake, a friendly smile, and a genuine demeanor—they’ll help you start relationships off on the right foot every time. Dress the part. Younger people have gotten a bad rap for regularly wearing pajamas and sweat pants in public— but the fact is, our society as a whole has gotten into a casual routine, and we’ve moved away from dressing our best. When you dress as though you’re already in the position you’d like to have, you’re one step closer to being there. Be the plow horse, not the show horse. As kids, many of us wondered how our fathers were able to put up with doing the same job every day.We eventually learned: It’s better to focus on doing diligent, reliable, honest work, not on receiving accolades. If you put in the hours and truly earn the respect you want, your time in the spotlight will last longer and will be much more fulfilling. Cheaper isn’t always better. Many of us have felt a financial pinch on and off throughout the years, and yes, there are times when it’s fine to get by with a secondhand kitchen table. However, realize that, if there’s any way you can afford it, there are some things that are worth the money. Be humble. It’s not surprising that people are more than eager to toot their own horns, especially if they think it will win them recognition or a spot in the limelight. So when you let your actions and character speak for themselves, people notice. The truth is, humility doesn’t mean being a meek, weak pushover…it just means you’re not a showboat.
Own great suits and learn to tie a good knot. If your job doesn’t require you to dress up every day, you’ll still need a classy, good-quality suit to wear to interviews and various formal events. While inner character is important, never forget that what people see forms a large part of their opinion of you. Do not burn bridges. Do you remember your father ever walking away from a fraught situation when you thought nasty words, insults, or even fists might have been more appropriate? Remember that people change, and realize that treating everyone with respect, in spite of negative circumstances, will give you a reputation for fairness and integrity. If you must choose between wealth and character: Choose character. Our culture seems to value success. However, this kind of “wealth” all too often comes at the expense of integrity, balance, and healthy relationships. When you choose to preserve and develop your character over your bank account, you’ll be making the far wiser investment in your future—and you’ll attract the sorts of people and opportunities that you really want. Be on time. You’ve heard this one from your father practically since birth—and it’s still great advice today. Punctuality is a good trait to have for many reasons. Just remember that whatever you’re doing will always take longer than you think—so budget your time accordingly! Send handwritten thankyou notes. Even if your mother had to prompt him to do it, chances are your father signed and sent thank-you cards. And in an increasingly digital age, this is one tradition that is best left in its original form. Writing out your appreciation by hand shows true gratitude. Let your YES mean YES and your NO mean NO. These days, plain speaking seems to have been left behind in our parents’ era. Be a person of your word. Period. Don’t give in to the temptation to tell white lies, to engage in double talk, or to renege on a promise. Putting others down is the quickest way to lower oneself. When you were a kid, your father probably told you not to pick on other kids and call them names. In business and in your personal life, make this your mantra. Saying negative things about other people in a non-constructive way only showcases your own insecurities. Be the best at treating others well. This goes back to the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. When you treat others well
Father Knows Best
you will see your honesty and kindness reflected back into your own life. You will have your share of good and bad luck. Your success is determined by how you handle the bad. No matter how much you plan, how well you

prepare, or how good your intentions, you’ll experience failures amongst your successes. You can’t always control what happens to you, but remember that you can control how you react to bad circumstances.

father’s day President Barack Obama Pens Essay on ‘Being the Father I Never Had’
President Barack Obama takes a moment with daughters Sasha and Mailia
Quality time when they were younger
Showing his affection to his daughters
A stroll down the beach on his time off
ant to know why President Barack Obama is such a great dad to his daughters Sasha and Malia. Because he grew up without his father. He told People Magazine this very thing in an exclusive Father’s Day essay. An excerpt is below: I grew up without a father around. I have certain memories of him taking me to my first jazz concert and giving me my first basketball as a Christmas present. But he left when I was two years old. And even though my sister and I were lucky enough to be raised by a wonder-
ful mother and caring grandparents, I always felt his absence and wondered what it would have been like if he had been a greater presence in my life. I still do. It is perhaps for this reason that fatherhood is so important to me, and why I’ve tried so hard to be there for my own children. That’s not to say I’ve always been a perfect dad. I haven’t. When Malia and Sasha were younger, work kept me away from home more than it should have. At times, the burden of raising our two daughters has fallen
too heavily on Michelle. During the campaign, not a day went by that I didn’t wish I could spend more time with the family I love more than anything else in the world. But through my own experiences, and my continued efforts to be a better father, I have learned something over the years about what children need most from their parents. They need our time, measured not only in the number of hours we spend with them each day, but what we do with those hours. I’ve learned that children don’t just need us physically present, but emotionally available – willing to listen and pay attention and participate in their daily lives. Children need structure, which includes learning the values of self-discipline and responsibility. Malia and Sasha may live in the White House, but Michelle and I still make sure they do their chores, make their beds, finish their schoolwork and take care of the dog. And above all I’ve learned that children need our unconditional love-when they succeed and when they make mistakes; when life is easy and life is hard. Without a doubt, it is easier to raise children in this kind of caring, attentive atmosphere when both parents are present. Of course, there are plenty of single parents who do a heroic job of raising their kids. I know this because I was fortunate enough to have one-a mother who never allowed my father’s absence to be an excuse for slacking off or not doing my best. But more and more kids are growing up today without their dads. And those young folks are more likely to struggle in school, try drugs, get into trouble and even wind up in jail.
I have worked hard to get dads help in simple but meaningful ways-by supporting community programs that work with troubled fathers; getting businesses to offer things like discounted movie or sports tickets for fathers to spend more time with their kids; and by making sure dads in the military can keep in contact with their children from overseas. And every father can encourage his child to turn off the video games and pick up a book; to study hard and stay in school. Every father can pack a healthy lunch for his son, or go outside and play ball with his daughter. No matter how difficult life gets, we can show our kids through our own example the value in treating each other as we wish to be treated. These things we can all do. Our kids understand that life won’t always be perfect, that times get tough and that even great parents don’t get everything right. More than anything, they just want us to be there-to be present, to care about their lives.
W
Help Kids Reach Their Potential There are too many young people out there who aren’t reaching their potential because they don’t have a father figure to guide them. And yet, the truth is, it’s harder to be a father today, even for those dads who are present in their children’s lives. We are still feeling the aftershocks of a recession that took an especially difficult toll on men. And if you’re struggling to pay the bills, a focus on simply getting by can understandably take precedence over everything else.

Coaching Moments
This year, in addition to being President, I took on a second job. I was an assistant coach for Sasha’s basketball team. Every Sunday we would bring Sasha and her teammates together for clinics and drills. It was a lot of fun. There were even a couple of times when I’d fill in for the regular coaches at the games. I’ll admit that this was a little nerveracking, and I’m sure this was true for Sasha as well, who may have winced when her dad would voice his displeasure with a particular call made by the referee. But I was so proud, watching her run up and down the court, seeing her learn and improve and gain confidence. And I was hopeful that in the years to come, she would look back on experiences like these as the ones that helped define her as a person – and as a parent herself. In the end that’s what being a parent is all about: those precious moments, the times we spend with our children that fill us with pride and excitement for their future; the chances we have to set an example or offer a piece of advice or just be there to show that we love them. And that’s a lesson worth remembering not just on Father’s Day, but every other day too.

ing to a report released this week from the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy. The report shows that small business lending has declined steadily during the last three quarters. The SBA report also found that lending has fallen on a yearly basis since hitting its peak in 2008. The total amount of small business loans outstanding in March of 2011 decreased 2.4%, or $14.9 billion, to $609.4 billion at the end of 2010, the report said. Outstanding loans to small businesses surged in 2008 to $711.5 billion, but when the recession started shortly after, small business lending plummeted. As the recession continued, banks sat on cash and lending to small businesses sank in 2009 and 2010. The pain of the credit crunch dragged on for small businesses even as larger businesses started to gain easier access to loans. Outstanding small business loans by the largest lenders, defined as having assets of $50 billion or more, decreased 4.9% in the first quarter of 2011. Is it the banks or the businesses? It is difficult to know why lending to small businesses continues to drag.
