Responding to Global Wildlife Emergencies Historic Drought in Kenya While thousands of guests fed giraffes at the Houston Zoo in 2021, they were also supporting our efforts to provide emergency support for water and food stations for more than 70 wild giraffes in Kenya. Wildlife in Kenya was severely impacted by a drought that plagued the region from April until December. The Zoo provided support for our giraffe conservation partners, the Somali Giraffe Conservation Program, to offer water to both wildlife and local communities. They also offered hay and pelleted food to strengthen the wild giraffe, zebra and other species in the area. Our African giraffe conservation partners are immensely grateful for the Zoo’s rapid response to this urgent need.
