Welcome to Hove Park Welcome to the third edition of our Hove Park Almanac. I am delighted that through the Almanac we can once again share some of the highlights from another full year in the life of Hove Park. We have continued to build upon the improvement and progress established throughout the school over previous years. As well as welcoming our new Year 7 students to Hove Park, we were able to start the new academic year on a very positive note by congratulating our students on their summer exam achievements, we were proud to see our best ever GCSE results. Our Sixth Form students also did well and we are pleased that many Year 11 students chose to continue their education at Hove Park and enter our vibrant Sixth Form, which is now attended by record numbers. Our progress continues to be nationally recognised as this year we have been ranked within the top 100 most improved schools in the country. Our Learning Transformation project, that has seen the embedment of iPads into day-to-day teaching and learning, is now well and truly established throughout the school. The project has had a positive impact and we are now seeing the evidence of its contribution to raising standards. Hove Park is now seen as a lead school both nationally and internationally for the effective way iPads are used as a key tool within teaching and learning. Governors are pleased that the recognition the school has achieved has not only positively raised our profile but, also provided the benefit of additional resources to support our students and ensure this project builds upon the successes achieved so far.
The governors recognise the increasing requirement within the current ever-changing educational climate for a school led improvement agenda. We have continued to further develop our links and partnerships with other schools and organisations. We have this year established an effective partnership with West Blatchington Primary, that has seen the leadership, staff, students and governors from both schools successfully working together sharing an improvement agenda. We are delighted that the progress and the benefits of effective partnering have been welcomed and acknowledged by Ofsted on a recent monitoring visit to West Blatchington Primary. The governors are once again proud of the progress Hove Park has made this year. We are rightly educationally ambitious for our students and recognise that the leadership and staff are our greatest asset as we think about the future and work towards moving from a good to an outstanding school.

Head Teacher’s Introduction Welcome to this year’s Almanac. This is our third edition and, once again, we are delighted to be able to present a window into some of the amazing events that have been taking place across the school year. This year has seen another major step forward in our school’s journey towards becoming outstanding. We began the year with yet another record set of results and were confirmed in The Telegraph’s list of the top 100 most improved state schools in the country in January. But this year has been about so much more than just improving academic success and we have had an absolutely fabulous year in terms of all areas of school life. You will read about a whole range of activities including: Literacy Coaches, our Royal interview, the latest from our iPad Digital Gurus, news from our partnerships at home and abroad, masses of creative work from Art and Drama and exciting successes in PE. One of the most interesting developments has been the way in which iPads have had a major impact on the way our students have prepared for their exams and this year’s Year 11 have approached revision. The materials and courses provided by staff to support students in their run up to their exams have been of exemplary quality and have provided a fantastic resource for years to come. We are confident that this will lead to yet another record set of results that will see the school maintain its position in the top 1% most improved schools in the country.

New Prefects Mr Streeter (Head of Year 11) introduced the latest cohort of Year 11 prefects earlier this year. Many students applied to be a prefect this year. The selection process involved an interview with the Head of Year and Assistant Head of Year. The students chosen gave a strong interview, and had been noticed for their exemplary conduct around the school and for representing themselves and the school in an excellent manner at many events over the course of the previous term. During their time in the role, our prefects have given tours to prospective parents, students and other visitors to the school. They have assisted at Prizegiving, Graduation events and Open Evenings. They have mentored young students at West Blatchington Primary and they have enjoyed the privilege of being allowed to jump the queue at canteen!
Celebrating Early GCSE Success
Top 100 Most Improved Schools
Once again it was great to start the 2013-14 year with another record set of examination results.
The latest performance tables, published by the Department for Education in January 2014, show that Hove Park School has maintained its place for the second year running in the list of top 100 most improved schools in the country.
65% of our students were able to attain the gold standard of 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C including English and Maths. Our rapid improvement over the last few years in this measure is clear to see in the following statistics: 27% in 2009, 41% in 2010, rising to 44% in 2012, then 65% most recently. This progress means that well over 100 more students were successful at this level than in 2009, providing them with an excellent platform from which to achieve their future aspirations. And this success story wasn’t only confined to GCSE either, as results for students in HP6 continued to show rapid progress with a high 99% A-Level pass rate! Of course, achievement continues to be at the heart of everything we do at the school and we are looking forward to further improvements in our results for summer 2014.
Across the last three years of results - between 2010 and 2013 - the proportion of students who achieved ‘5 GCSEs or more, including English and Maths’ increased by 24%. In terms of improvement, this places us within the top 2% of all state schools nationally. The performance tables also show that we are the 10th most improved community school in the country. We are proud to be able to show hard evidence that the work and commitment of our staff and students is resulting in a sustained and continued improvement, which can be seen and measured against a national benchmark.

Action Tutoring
By Jacob and Charlotte
Action Tutoring is currently running an 8-week tutoring programme for a selected group of Year 10 Hove Park students.
As Head Boy and Head Girl, we have had numerous responsibilities representing the school and our students this year. We have been involved with options and open evenings, helping out behind the scenes as well as on the stage. We’ve toured prospective parents and students and had great fun mentoring younger students at our partner school, West Blatchington. We’ve also given speeches about iPads to hundreds of visitors and have presented evenings of celebration and success such as Prizegiving and Graduation. But most of all, we’ve had an amazing time being at the forefront of such an incredible change to our school. We both feel it’s been a pleasure to spend our final year contributing to a positive lasting change for future students of Hove Park.

Action Tutoring is a registered charity that provides one-to-one tutoring in Maths and English. The idea is to make the benefits of private tutoring - which is widespread but also very expensive - available to a wider range of pupils. Tuition is for an hour a week and focuses on areas that the student is struggling with. By liaising closely with classroom teachers, tutors ensure that the content of the tutoring complements what pupils are being taught in class. All of the tutors are volunteers. Many of them are university students and all have been carefully selected on the basis of their academic record and their communication skills.
Royal Interview By Student Reporter, Ruben. Student Reporters at Hove Park School were given an exclusive interview with HRH The Earl of Wessex at Buckingham Palace as part of his 50th Birthday celebrations. The students secured the interview after writing to The Earl when looking for possible stories for their work on the BBC News School Report, a project run by the BBC which helps young people experience broadcast news. Aisha, one of the junior reporters to write to The Earl said: “When we wrote the letter we were expecting a polite ‘no’. It felt incredible and unreal when we heard it was ‘yes’!” During the interview, The Earl expressed his enthusiasm for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and explained to the students how it is a life-changing experience for many young people, giving them the opportunity to achieve their full potential whatever their circumstances. Poppy, one of the four students involved in the interview said: “The whole day was fantastic and, even though I was very nervous, The Earl put us at ease before we started our questions.” Another student reporter, Amy, said: “The interview was conducted in a grandly decorated room close to the famous balcony where the Royal Family wave to the crowds from. Just being there was amazing!” Before leaving, the students gave The Earl an early birthday card (pictured below) which was designed by Ruby, a Year 7 student at the school.
Prizegiving Evening Hove Park’s third Prizegiving Evening took place this year at Hove Town Hall on Wednesday 19th March. Prizegiving is the most prestigious event in our calendar when we pull out all the stops to recognise student achievements across the school. On the night, the presentation of awards was interspersed with performances of Music, Dance and Drama, for which students had been preparing and rehearsing for weeks. The grand finale was an exuberant rendition of ‘We Go Together’ from our recent school show, Grease. Guest of Honour this year was Graham Peters, the High Sheriff of East Sussex, Mr. Peters, who inspired students with a speech about aiming high and doing your best alongside giving an insight into his work. Mr Trimmer said, “It’s important that we create opportunities for us all to stop and recognise individual contributions. There was a lot of pride in the room!”

Literacy Coaches Since September, Year 7 students have had six Literacy Coaches working with them. As part of a national initiative, Hove Park is one of three schools, along with Perry Beeches and City of Leeds School, to employ Coaches to raise standards in literacy. Working one-to-one and in small groups, the students were able to receive personalised tuition which addressed specific literacy issues and built confidence in reading, writing and spelling. We used techniques and strategies that were innovative and creative to ensure students’ learning was engaging. The iPads have been great for using specific spelling and vocabulary apps, which made learning new words exciting for the students. Prior knowledge was reinforced with interactive games as well as creative writing. Our excellent relationships with the students increased their resilience in learning as well as their independence. The students have benefitted enormously from this coaching in many areas of their school life, as well as providing them with the skills to access all aspects of the curriculum.
Creative Writing Club The Literacy Coaches run a drop-in Creative Writing Club once a week at lunchtimes. The club provides a positive environment for students’ creativity with inventive ideas to get them writing their own stories, poems and scripts.
Building Self Confidence in Relationships Many of our students feel they go unheard in bigger groups due to a lack of confidence and positive self-image. By working in small groups with similar level students, a real sense of mutual support and empathy has developed. Seeing a previously reticent student happily expressing their ideas with the group is what makes the job worthwhile.
Self-Confidence in Ability For some of our tutees, their struggle hasn’t been about their lack of knowledge or skill, but rather their lack of belief in themselves. Coaching creates a safe zone, for those too nervous to read aloud or ask questions. With our support, our children have been able to flourish, bursting with answers when they once were too unsure to put their hand up.
Identifying the Literacy Skills that Students Have Missed When a child misses key terminology or skills in primary school, this results in a cloud of confusion later on. We find these gaps through innovative activities early in the academic year, whether they’re not sure on word types, forming sentences or spelling rules, and we find the best way for that particular student to absorb the knowledge.
The Importance of Reading at Hove Park One-to-one reading has been an essential part of literacy coaching, promoting a love of books and stories. There is extensive research showing that the more a child reads, the better their vocabulary, spelling and chances of doing well in later life. The coaches have joined with library staff to facilitate a reading mentoring scheme. Valley Campus adopted ‘Drop Everything And Read’ (DEAR), where students enjoy reading for 15 minutes every day, acknowledging the importance of this skill in our busy lives.
Making the Transition From Year 6 to Year 7 The literacy coaching initiative has been instrumental in building interpersonal relationships with students. Transition from Year 6 to Year 7 is a big change. This individualised approach helps ease any anxieties the students may have had regarding secondary school.

Graduation KS3 & KS4 Last year we hosted the second Hove Park Graduation Ceremony at Hove Town Hall for KS3 students. Students attending KS3 Graduation have successfully passed their Hove Park Bacc, which means that they have hit their targets and completed all of their assignments in every single subject that they study - an incredible achievement. This year we are also hosting a Graduation Ceremony to celebrate the hard work of our Year 10 and Year 11 students. We pull out all the stops for these events. Students wear bespoke graduation gowns and mortar boards to receive their awards and a lively programme of student performances plus guest speakers add entertainment value. Graduation has become one of the most prestigious annual events in the Hove Park calendar.
Jamie Oliver Live @ HPS! Year 9 Hove Park students supported Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Day by taking part in the world record attempt to get 8 million children cooking along with Jamie himself! Food Revolution Day is a global day of action to keep cooking skills alive. The big message is to help children enjoy cooking food, educating them in how to cook from scratch as well as showing them where food comes from. The group of Hove Park students cooked along live with Jamie Oliver in a global broadcast, making a healthy rainbow wrap. It was wonderful to see our students focused and engaged in such an event and excited in being part of widening young peoples’ awareness of healthy eating and the enjoyment of cooking.

Phoenix Centre Tanzania Trip In September 2013, Hove Park’s Special Facility became the Phoenix Centre and changed its specialism from Dyslexia to Autistic Spectrum Condition and Speech, Language and Communication Needs. In its first year, we’ve set up a lovely new classroom, introduced the Communication Commitment and Lego Therapy and celebrated World Autism Awareness Day/Week. The ‘Communication Commitment’ is an undertaking by Hove Park to ensure we establish communication friendly classrooms. All staff attended a professional development session recently with support from the Local Authority’s Language Learning team. Staff learnt more about the needs of students with SLCN and how best to support their learning. Our next commitment is to develop pictures and symbols to accompany signage around the school. We celebrated Autism Awareness Week in April, to coincide with World Autism Awareness Day on Wednesday 2nd April 2014. A series of activities were organised: Posters celebrating Autism and ‘Difference’ were displayed around the school. We led assemblies to raise Autism awareness with our students, and tutors delivered information sessions on ASC each morning with their tutees.

At the time of writing there is less than 4 weeks to go. Having recently had our pre-departure meetings, our trip to Africa is fast approaching! Some last minute fund-raising by the students include: tuck shop at lunch time run by Devon, India shaved her head last month and raised several hundred pounds and after half term we are doing one last raffle with a pair of Albion football boots as one of the prizes. Ms Page, pictured below, has organised two weekly training sessions for the next 7 weeks to get the group in shape and up to Ms Satterly‘s fitness standard! The group meets at Hove Park every Wednesday and at the peace statue on Hove seafront every Sunday morning to go for a run. Swimming sessions are also a must so we are ready for the scuba diving in Tanga, which is the first part of the itinerary, along with building “momma” huts from wood and mud. Padi forms are signed and posted and visas are being processed as I write this. It has seemed a long haul getting this far but we are now all excited and looking forward to the adventure before us. I’m sure it will be a positive lifechanging experience for us all.
Outstanding Progress Award Earlier this year, representatives from Hove Park School travelled to the Emirates Stadium in London to collect a commendation at the Education Business Awards. The ceremony was a plush affair, sponsored by financial services giant Rathbones and hosted by Olympic silver medallist and Strictly star, Roger Black. Hove Park was one of the few local authority maintained schools to be nominated, with top independent schools and high-performing academies picking up awards. We received a nomination for the progress that the school has made in the last few years and for creative approaches to education, such as the investment in iPad technology. Mr Trimmer said: “It was a real mark of our success that we were shortlisted for the final four at such a prestigious event.
Planetarium Visit In December, students were given a tour of the night sky from inside an inflatable planetarium. Loaned to Hove Park by Sussex University the planetarium is a portable dome-like environment that can be assembled anywhere in an 8m x 8m space with a room height of 4m. Students were shown a video presentation inside the dome called ‘We Are Astronomers’, about the most powerful telescopes on earth, which aimed to promote astronomy and physics. Students of all ages from both sites were enthralled by the experience. Teacher, Mr Parslow said: “Due to its success we had to bring the planetarium back to both sites in the following weeks so that the classes who missed out before got a chance to experience the wonder of space.”

Science Student Little Brown Teaches Class Book Group 16 year old Kyle Edmond taught an entire afternoon session on cyclotrons, a type of particle accelerator, to a GSCE Science class. The 100 minute lesson involved complex physics concepts such as ‘motion in a circle’, which was expertly modelled by Kyle on the whiteboard. The lesson also contained a practical experiment. Kyle, who has a special interest in the topic, had asked if he could lead a session himself. He said: “Teaching the topic helps me to understand it better myself.” He also said that the experience has helped confirm for him that he would like to become a teacher. “Before doing this I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be a teacher or not but now I’m pretty certain I do.” Kyle’s Science teacher, Mr Martin, who was watching from the back of the class, was very impressed with Kyle’s confidence and composure; “He’s more relaxed than I am!”, he said.
On Tuesday 6th March, our school librarians took twelve Year 11 Creative Writers to the award winning publishing house, The Little Brown Group, at Blackfriars, London. The Little Brown Group look after authors such as JK Rowling, Stephanie Myers, Donna Tartt and celebrities such as Sharon Osborne and Frank Lampard. Hove Park students had a tour of the modern open-plan office, which was filled with shelves of books, comfortable sofas and a lot of very busy staff including editors, designers and marketing agents. After the tour, three editors came to speak to the students and talked about the career path they had taken and expanded on their day-to-day role within the company. The visit ended with a goody bag for everyone and very satisfied students, who now know a lot more about the publishing industry.

Make Your Soul Grow In April this year Hove Park students performed in an inspirational short film about creativity made by Dogtooth Films, which featured on The Guardian’s website. The film, which was shot on location at Hove Park School, brings to life a letter written to a group of students by the late author Kurt Vonnegut, urging the young people to do art for art’s sake and ‘make their souls grow’. The film attracted much attention with over 26,000 plays on The Guardian website, over 12,000 plays on Vimeo and mentioned in over 200 tweets in the first week alone. Student Eleanor, who was involved in making the film said: “I really enjoyed the experience of working with a professional film company and seeing first-hand what it takes to produce a piece of film. It was interesting to learn the different jobs and their roles and how they all work together. It was difficult to imagine what the end product would look like during filming, so I was really impressed with how professional it looked!”

Komedia Screening of Students’ Work Two groups of Year 11 Media students have this year been given the chance to screen their film work in Brighton. The first is a group of girls, who teamed up with artist Gemma Kauffman from the Brighton Dome Project ‘Miss Represented’, to create Film Trailers to be showcased at Bfest (a creative arts festival for young people) in May. ‘Miss Represented’ is an all female arts collective exploring issues and themes around identity and relationships. It creates a supportive space for personal development and helps young women build their resilience and have their voices heard. The girls who got involved were: Rhianna, Gabriella, Maiya, Tayla, Jasmine, Amy, Ruby and Rhian. Gemma pointed out, “It can be really challenging to both star in, write and produce a film trailer, especially at a time when women are often portrayed in limited stereotypes and scrutinised on their appearance.” She told us: “The benefit of the mentoring sessions was mainly to ensure the students had the confidence to fully realise their creative potential. I feel both trailers are very successful and look forward to the screenings at Bfest.” Other Hove Park students have submitted their film work to be screened as part of BFest. Year 10 Media students Toby, Isabel, Kai and Year 8 student Lottie were also keen to offer personal interpretations of the theme of transition. Read overleaf about the other Hove Park group to get involved in Bfest.

Festival Shows Student Film This year, five Year 11 boys have been involved in an after school ‘Youth in Action’ film project in connection with Brighton Youth Centre and the Fabrica art gallery. Students Kevin, Isaac, Sam, Michael and Max, who make up an artistic collective called ‘We Are People Too’, applied to the Council in January last year to secure funding for their film. Since then, they have been meeting with several young Fabrica volunteers and their Artist in Residence, Jamie Romp. They screened a taster trailer in November last year to promote their final piece, which was shown on Tuesday 27th May at Komedia Comedy Club as part of BFest, a local youth arts festival. Kevin, Isaac and Sam were introduced to the CEO of Brighton Youth Centre on a trip to a Creative Café in 2012. This experience has helped to inspire creativity and strengthen their editing skills needed for film making on the GCSE course.

Education Leadership Summit Earlier this year we were given the unique opportunity to share with educators from across Europe, Asia and Australasia how we use iPads in English. Over 3 days, Mrs Pinney and a group of Year 7 students recreated lessons at Kings Place in London, transforming the delegates into Hove Park students for the day. The lesson they gave looked at how to create and develop poetry using Keynote. Delegates were given the task of writing a poem about themselves using a picture they had taken as inspiration. Then, using resources from iTunes U, they had to develop their work by AirDropping it to someone else in the room and to peer assess. During the conference, Year 7 students helped hundreds of teachers and school leaders from a number of countries produce poetry in a plethora of languages. Apple’s Sarah Hayden described the students as ‘incredibly professional’.

Teaching & Learning So, one year after iPads were introduced across the school, how have they been integrated into daily life? Here teachers tell us about the impact iPads have had in the classroom and what exciting things they are looking to develop next.
English - Mr Frimpon English lessons this year have become more interactive as a result of the iPads. The fact that all students have access to iPads as well as teachers means a huge shift in teaching and learning. It means that students are able to drive their own learning and become more independent. Students have been more involved in the learning process and have had more options available to them with regards to ‘types of learning’. Students have engaged with iMovie and Nearpod best in my classes and I continue to incorporate them into my lessons regularly.
Music - Ms Ede We can now record students’ work so they can keep a record of the performances from week to week. They can also assess their own work and create clear targets based on these for future lessons. The iPads have also enabled students to layer their work if they want to add tracks to their pieces. They don’t have to be an expert drummer to add a percussion part to their piece, this has also helped with performance too. We are looking to incorporate the use of Nearpod more in lessons to assess students’ understanding of context and using iPads with electronic hubs as a way of connecting practical work with the iPads.
History - Ms Bryan As a History teacher I think it’s great that students now have a range of information at their fingertips. They can now explore their own areas of interest and plan their own investigations around a central
topic, whether it’s investigating the evidence around the assassination of JFK or working on local history about the Brighton area. This means that as a teacher you can point them in different directions but the students have more ownership of their learning.
Languages - Mr Sandford Without question the main impact of iPad technology to the bread and butter business of language learning has been the Voice Note section of the Showbie app. Across the Key Stages students are submitting speaking homework and getting feedback via the same media to work on pronunciation and accuracy of the spoken target language. In addition we have also been using Quizlet to embed key vocabulary – students either making their own cue cards for speaking exams or simply to practise the core vocabulary in a variety of interactive formats, again with the essential component of voice to aid pronunciation and phonetic spelling. An app called Eidetic has been used amongst GCSE students to remind them of key phrases for written and spoken course work – they love the way the messages refuse to disappear until they type in the correct piece of language correctly! This app is now available in Chinese and it is with Chinese that the impact of iPads has been at times the most obvious – apps focusing on correct characters and sentence structure have been invaluable. For next year the clear Modern Foreign Languages focus is to use iPads more as a tool to develop confidence and resilience in languages. There will be a clear focus on assessment-forlearning through apps such as Explain Everything and Show Me. One of the hurdles we have faced in languages is that the iPads have given students easy access to Google Translate and this has led to a distraction away from key skills – learning grammar and verbs and the skills of dictionary use. Dictionary apps such as Leo will offer students many benefits over a traditional dictionary without losing the key skills and falling prey to the easy, but mistake-ridden path of online translation sites.
Almanac - 2013/14
25
Languages - Ms Glentworth One of the things I have enjoyed most since working with iPads, has been the way in which we can now tap directly in to so many more ‘student voices’. This is not just through the ease with which we can set and get back spoken work – a real gift in the world of language learning – but also by the way technology has thrown open numerous opportunities for dialogue between student and teacher. We have always given formative feedback as part of our marking but using more ‘live’ and interactive channels, such as Showbie or Edmodo, has meant so much more in terms of hearing back from students what they think. Moving forward, I am looking forward to being able to make even more of the possibilities for independent learning. As we load more of our courses on to iTunes U and resources are more easily available to students, I think we will see a real difference in terms of progress in lesson. I can see a new culture of learning developing, with less time required for ‘scene setting’ and more time devoted to activities and student progress. Students can access materials before lessons happen and refer back to them as an aid to their learning outside of the classroom. It is exciting to see the possibility for students to build on their skills of independence and taking greater ownership of their own progress.
Sociology - Mr Warwick My teaching has been tailored to meet more of the students’ individual needs within the groups through the iPad. The use of Nearpod has enabled me to see in more detail how much students actually know and to tailor my lesson plans accordingly. It also reduces some of the stress that a student may face during a lesson by enabling them to take part more often in discussion activities. I would like to make more use of Popplet and mind mapping apps, I am also looking to create video revision guides that explain past papers, trends and mark schemes to students in greater detail, similar to what has already been done in Science, thus improving student achievement.
26
Hove Park School
Another advantage of iPads is that they give more opportunities for one-to-one work. Students can work at their own pace and go back to work that they have missed as it is on Showbie. They can research up to date sociological theories and this helps them to achieve maximum marks in essays. Students benefit from having access to the most up to date research available for individual questions and topics. They can easily investigate the sociologist and their political viewpoint.
Science - Ms Jessey With iPads I can now give much more choice to students without the necessity for preparing numerous different versions of tasks. For any task students have a choice of apps they can use to complete the work set, as well as a much wider range of options for presenting their work using media other than written work (i.e. video, audio, animation, photos, annotating pictures etc). One app that has really helped students to explore their understanding of Science is iMotion HD. With this app we can create stop-animation videos that enable us to illustrate abstract and complicated processes; timelapse videos that allow us to see the real world in different ways and, overall, videos that develop and explore students’ artistic and creative abilities when tasked with sharing their understanding of science. In Science we are starting to practise communicating our work to an international audience via the use of student blogs and look forward to collaborating with other schools around the world to develop our peer assessment and feedback skills as part of this. We are also starting to use an app called ThingLink, which allows a photo or diagram to be annotated with notes, photos, links, videos etc but without losing the original picture behind lots of notes. This is particularly useful for Science as it allows students to point out what is happening in specific locations on an image and to develop their explanations by bringing together various sources of information in one place.

Outstanding Teachers Showcase This term, Hove Park hosted a showcasing event for outstanding teachers at our partner school,West Blatchington Primary. Teachers from across 10 schools in the Brighton and Hove partnership delivered mini 10 minute presentations to each other using different technology. The presentations shared best practice and ideas for delivering outstanding lessons across many different subjects and key stages.
St Andrews Primary showed how they were using iPads to support teaching in PE. Children recorded each other throwing the ball and watched back for instant feedback. Teachers told how sharing the learning intention and success criteria with children helped them see what skill they were learning. West Blatchington demonstrated how they were fostering independence in Year 1 using digital technology and reported very high levels of enjoyment as well as improved learning outcomes.
It was clear that the calibre of teaching in our partnership is already very high, yet teachers were still striving to take their impact further. The groups talked about the many small ways in which teaching can be improved and learning made more effective.
Hangleton Infants gave a comical presentation in the form of an iMovie. The Reception team enacted a Two-Ronnies-style news report demonstrating life before and after iPads.
Hove Park presented ideas on how to overcome student blocks and difficulties by using a simple quiz both at the start and the end of a lesson to show the students their progress. In Science students made an animation using plasticine to demonstrate nuclear fusion, the doing of which helped consolidate their learning.
Common themes that came up were: closing the gap between boys and girls in Primary (using the outdoor environment to stimulate interest), childled learning and flipped learning, where students do some of the background learning at home online, freeing up more valuable teacher time for the classroom.

Learning Adventure Centre Through our use of iPads we have been given the unique opportunity to use the Learning Adventure Centre at Brighton Marina. The centre has been funded and built by the Fonthill Foundation as a learning space using new technologies, with the aim of breaking away from the traditional classroom. Our Science, English, Maths and Geography departments have used the Adventure Centre for immersion learning days for Key Stage 3 students. Students have been lucky to be part of a new learning experience to complement the work they have been doing in school. These special days have allowed our students to engage with subjects in a way they haven’t been able to before. Teachers have planned exciting projects and students have been able to really explore learning in a new way.

Digital Gurus We have a large number of students who have volunteered to be more involved with our Learning Transformation. 96 of these ‘Digital Gurus’ regularly support other students in lessons and offer help at break to those who may need some help with their iPads. They have been instrumental in providing informal technical support; often show our visitors around the school from an iPad perspective and give regular feedback on how iPads are working in the classroom. Here are some highlights from their experiences in the classroom and how using an iPad has impacted on their learning: Before iPads came to Hove Park all work was done on paper. We wrote with pens and when we made mistakes we started again from scratch. We also did not have many options on how to lay out our work, but now with our iPads we do. If any mistakes are are made we can fix them in seconds and we won’t have to start over, but that doesn’t mean we don’t still use pen and paper. iPads have made a huge impact in our learning that has led to success and has given all students a new and fun way of learning.
Bronte, Year 8 iPads have created a new type of learning for everyone in our school. It’s an enhancement to our learning and a great tool to help us all the way through. In subjects such as PE, which I am very fond of, it helps us record our performance, skills and techniques, which we can then email or upload to the Showbie app to share with teachers. In other subjects like Maths, we use the app called Numbers. It has a variety of tables for us to draw or make and the teacher can give us work through Showbie, which we can open in apps such as Numbers, Pages. This has helped me to access my work a lot quicker and this means I have more time to learn!
Maryam, Year 8
Using an iPad has really helped with my preparation for my Year 9 exams. I have used my iPad to create flashcards to help me remember phrases when I was preparing for my French GCSE exam. It was a simple and effective way to revise and a lot easier and quicker than having to write everything down the traditional way. I love having the internet at my fingertips whenever I need to research a subject either for facts or for pictures. I can then create a presentation using the Keynote app, which is a great way to display my work. iPads are great for sharing information and ideas with friends. I find Showbie works well when you want to ask a teacher something you’re not sure about, which is a lot quicker than having to wait and ask at your next lesson. This has really helped me continue my learning at home and get ready for lessons before I come to school. In summary, I think the iPads are a great tool for learning as it allows you to engage and interact with other students and teachers in a way which wasn’t possible before I had an iPad.
James, Year 9 The iPads have become our everyday tool that contribute greatly to our lessons. We use them in every lesson to research, write and structure work to a higher level than we can produce on paper. The iPads are also great for revision and homework as we can work on them anytime and any place. The best app on the iPad by far is Pages, closely followed by Keynote. These two apps are used for everything and are great for presentations. Often, if we need to create quick but important notes, Pages is perfect because the files save automatically to our iCloud, meaning our files are safe and we can access if something happens to our iPads.

Judge Barnes By The Journalist Group In a visit to Hove Park School, Her Honour Judge Barnes stressed the need for greater diversity in all branches of the judiciary. Answering questions from the school’s A-Level Law students she said that those pursuing a career in Law need to press for further change to the current system, where the top jobs in the legal profession are still largely dominated by middle-class, middle-aged men. Judge Barnes also told students that getting to the top in a career in Law was a tough choice but hugely rewarding. She went on to praise the British system of training judges which requires relevant legal qualifications, a number of years of experience in practising Law as well as serving for a period as a Deputy Judge. Judge Barnes, whose own career path included working as both a barrister for the defence and later for the prosecution, advised those who wanted to become a member of the judiciary to work both in defence and prosecution. “Seeing a case from both sides helps you to become a better advocate”, she commented.

Marcus Orlovsky On Friday 6th December Hove Park School was lucky enough to get a visit from TED Speaker, inspirational businessman and educator Marcus Orlovsky. Marcus is passionate about creating opportunities for young people and has been working with students from around the globe for over 25 years. His speech to Year 10 students was truly awe inspiring and many of the students were moved to tears as well as fired up with ambition and purpose. Marcus told the students he was willing to answer any question they could muster and he answered them all openly and honestly, including personal ones about his difficult start in life. Headteacher Derek Trimmer said: “We were honoured to have Marcus Orlovsky visit our school. It was a great opportunity to show what an impact powerful and inspirational speakers can have on young people.
Councillor Anne Pissaridou In November last year, Hove Park welcomed a visit from Labour Councillor for Brighton & Hove, Anne Pissaridou. Councillor Pissaridou has worked in the civil service for nearly 30 years and serves as a Trustee of the Grandparents Association. Her family all live in Brighton & Hove and her grandchildren go to local schools. She has been a long-standing active member of the community, successfully campaigning on local development issues. The Councillor was taken on a tour of the school spending time in a few classrooms to see some teaching and learning, after which she gave enthusiastic feedback on the dynamic and creative lessons she saw in action.
Michael Beard Michael Beard, Editor of The Argus, urged aspiring young reporters to be courageous, nosey and above all different, in a recent interview with Year 10 student journalists at Hove Park School. Mr Beard explained that getting noticed when you start out is always difficult but he said “if you have a real desire to be a journalist and the courage to be different and stand out, you might just make it.” Mr Beard added that “competition for jobs in the media is fierce” with The Argus attracting 130 -140 applicants for every new junior Journalist job advertised. It is important for a journalist not to be afraid to be daring and go and sniff out stories; they should also be interested in people and the community. It will help your chances if you get work experience at a paper, and/or a qualification that makes you stand apart from the rest such as the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) certificate - and it does help to have a decent speed in shorthand.

Dogtooth Films Last term, James Newton and Mark Bader from an independent film company in Brighton, came to visit Year 11 Media Studies students to discuss what it’s like to make films for a living. Dogtooth films pride themselves on making narrative-driven scripted drama based on real life experiences. Since the students were at the time putting the finishing touches to their thriller film trailers as part of their coursework, the pair were able to give useful advice on how to produce effective footage. They were quick to emphasise that narrative and careful editing are the key to making the best films that people really enjoy watching and that this is even more important in a brief trailer. James and Mark were impressed with the student films and found their creativity was exciting.
Lloyd Ellett Professional boxer “Lightening Lloyd Ellett came into Hove Park last year to speak to GCSE students about Sports Science linked to nutrition, training and attitudes required to reach the pinnacle of sports performance. Lloyd gave a superb presentation to around 40 students with video footage of recent titles and even brought in his title belt. All students were thoroughly entertained and engaged and we would like to thank him for his time and inspirational delivery.
Lewis Crathern Champion kite surfer Lewis Crathern paid a visit to our Year 7 and 8 students. Worthing local and four times British Kitesurfing Champion, Lewis also consistently ranks inside the Top 20 internationally. His spectacular kitesurfing feats are recognised by millions worldwide, perhaps the most famous being his audacious jump over Brighton Pier.
Pretty Litter Ex-Hove Park student, Lyssa Rutherford, visited the Creative Media Sixth Form groups to talk to them about how she set up her own free arts based magazine, Pretty Litter, in Brighton. Having studied Media here herself, she went on to gain work experience working for other magazines before setting up her own production from home and making the most of her contacts in the City. The magazine, Pretty Litter, covers all aspects of modern creative culture, from tattoo and street art, to experimental new music and performance arts. The students are planning their own productions and have been studying local music magazines. They benefitted greatly from the insight she provided on the importance of deadlines, attracting advertisers, networking within the community and keeping an eye on the latest trends. We look forward to continuing a connection with the magazine.

Spanish students spent a week shadowing their ‘buddies’ at Hove Park School recently to get a real taste of what life is like in a UK school.
On March 14th, Hove Park hosted 58 visiting French students from one of our partner schools, Jean-Renoir in the Champagne region of France.
Going to all lessons with their buddies meant that the students were exposed to English across the curriculum, not just in the context of language classes and activities.
Students buddied up with some of our keen linguists from Years 7 and 8 and got to experience attending a range of lessons, as well as practising their English skills by interviewing some of our Year 9 students.
Isabelle,15, said she enjoyed being a buddy to Natalya from Alicante,“We speak English with them as the point is for them to be immersed in the English language, but if she doesn’t understand something, I can try to translate it for her.” Natalya said “My English is improving. I enjoy spending time with my buddy and we will stay in touch on Facebook when I go back to Spain.”
Students were also able to meet up with some of their email exchange pen-pals at break. Special commendation goes to Ella-Mei, Abigail, Maia, Sarah and Alex from Year 9 as well as all of the Year 7 and 8 buddies. College Jean-Renoir enjoyed their trip so much they came back for a second time in May! We look forward to continuing exchanges with the school in the future.

Sports Leaders This year has seen a large number of pupils gain a Sports Leaders UK qualification. Years 10 and 11 pupils have been given the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through the enrichment offer brought in September 2012. This year we have had fifty Year 10 pupils working to gain their Level 1 qualification as well as thirty five Year 11s gaining the Level 2 award. After completing lessons on skills such as communication, organisation and subject knowledge, our leaders have been involved in leading sessions at Hangleton Junior School and West Blatchington Primary, assisting with events such as ‘Run the World’, Hove and Portslade Schools Annual Netball Tournament and Cross Country Championship. One of this year’s highlights was seeing the Level 2 Sports Leaders assist with running our Mini Mile event. This year we had our biggest number of entries with over 200 pupils taking part from our local primary and junior schools.
PE + This year has seen the continuation of our work developing partnerships with local primary schools within the community. For the third year running we have released a specialist PE teacher to work as a School Sports Coordinator who has supported local primary schools with their PE curriculum and assisted in offering enrichment opportunities to their pupils. Ms Martin has provided INSET training, curriculum planning and lesson support to teachers and schools to enhance their PE curriculum, provide knowledge and provide greater opportunities for young pupils to participate in competitive sport.

Forest School Forest School is a growing national movement, that allows young people to take risks and develop self confidence in a safe and controlled way. The concept started in Scandinavia, where it has been part of the national curriculum for some time. There, every student has the opportunity to learn ‘bush skills’ and to interact with the natural world. West Blatchington Primary, through its partnership with Hove Park, has a unique opportunity to access this programme at Plumpton College. We have two days in July when Turtle class will follow up from their previous visits last year. On these days they will develop their camp craft of fire-lighting, cooking and tool-craft. We hope to extend the themes of storytelling and creating tribal identities. In these ways, students will learn to take responsibility for themselves and making the right decisions, while still being safe and having fun. It is also hoped that they will learn to appreciate our varied and beautiful local semi-wild habitat.

3D Printing On Thursday 22nd May students from Hove Park and West Blatchington Primary School were lucky enough to see an actual 3D Printer in action courtesy of Scott Partridge from www.total3dprinters.co.uk. Scott graciously gave up his time to demonstrate this exciting new technology to Year 10 Design and Technology students and West Blatchington’s Turtle class. With a brief introduction into what many have described as ‘the future of design and manufacturing’, the machine he brought with him - the ‘Cube’ - sparked into life and printed off castles, bracelets and even a mobile phone case with ease! Both students and staff alike were wowed by how easy it was to actually print these items in 3D in front of their very eyes; as one student put it “just like magic!”

Students Teach the Moon! Congratulations to the Year 11 Astronomy students who were invited to teach Year 5 at West Hove Junior School. The afternoon session was based on “The Moon” and Hove Park students ran a series of workshops that included getting pupils to make their own moons, a special “guess the weight of the moon” quiz, recreating the phases of the moon with Oreo biscuits and finding out how long it would take to drive to the moon. The pupils and teachers at West Hove really enjoyed the day and have asked the students to come back again in the future.
Lunchtime Buddies Year 10 prefects have been mentoring and befriending pupils from West Blatchington Primary at lunchtime. The Hove Park students have been working as Lunchtime Buddies, concentrating on the less confident children who needed more encouragement to join in at playtime. This approach proved very successful at helping to integrate the more shy children. Our Year 10s got a lot out of the experience. They enjoyed participating in the playground games but they also observed how huge the transition was for students moving from Year 6 into Year 7. They reflected on how the move to secondary school comes with huge expectations to ‘grow up’ quickly. The Year 10 students were able to build great relationships with the younger pupils, who looked forward to seeing their older friends on a twice weekly basis.

iPad Teaching Partnership Since the start of the year, Maths teacher Phil Sumner has been working in partnership with colleagues at West Blatchington Primary, supporting teachers in the use of iPads in their lessons. The introduction of iPad technology has revolutionised teaching methods at Hove Park and this is a practice we wanted to share with West Blatchington. First and foremost we needed to establish a basic training programme - to give teachers the confidence they needed to use this new technology in their day-to-day teaching. Using iPads for the first time can be a daunting prospect and having gone through the transition at Hove Park we are now able to offer guidance in how applications can work. As a result of this partnership, colleagues at West Blatchington have now successfully incorporated the use of Showbie, Educreations and Nearpod into everyday lessons. Teachers Rose Roberts and John Mills are now up and running with Nearpod and collecting and setting work via Showbie. We have also worked with Educreations and its power to deliver a key idea that has been made in minutes. The teacher can create a short video explaining a topic and students can then use it as a source to look back at from home. John said: “The partnership with Hove Park has really progressed my professional development beyond belief. I have been fortunate to work and learn alongside Phil, engaging with how iPads can inspire teachers and pupils alike.“ The willingness of the staff at West Blatchington to learn and adapt to the way teaching can be enhanced with iPads has meant they were able to see the potential of their use. It’s an ongoing partnership and one where we will see more developments in the future with technology and its application in our classrooms.

Hove Park Welcomes German Visitors In May, Hove Park welcomed visitors from the Europaschule Ostendorf-Gymnasium in Lippstadt, Germany. Lippstadt is a town of 70,000 inhabitants in the east of Northrine-Westfalia, in the central west of Germany some 42 miles east from Dortmund and the “Ruhrgebiet” – right in the centre of the German manufacturing heartland but surrounded by some outstanding areas of natural beauty. The school has 862 students and the focus of the school is on languages, with bilingual immersion classes (subjects which are taught in English, e.g. History and Geography). English is studied at the school as a first language with Spanish, French and Latin also taught.
The background of the school is similar to Hove Park – where languages have a rich and valued tradition. The school is an active participant in European school projects, such as the COMENIUS project and they work together with schools in Finland, Sweden, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and Poland. Meeting with our school is hopefully the first rung on a ladder to closer co-operation and opportunities to work together in class and visit on exchanges. The visit comes at a very important time for Hove Park as the languages team seeks to find key language partners across the EU with competences in new technology and with an emphasis on sharing good practice and pedagogy.

Reading Buddies Hove Park students have been helping pupils at West Blatchington Primary with their reading. Miss Forsyth from West Blatchington Primary and Ms Iliffe from Hove Park, together with 11 Year 8 students, have begun working with Year 5 and 6 children every Friday morning. The older students help to encourage a love of reading, boost confidence and help to improve the reading skills of the younger students. The first session comprised a question and answer session, where students got to know one another. Since then the rest of the sessions simply revolve around reading together in a relaxed atmosphere.
Samba Workshop The Sixth Formers, as part of their Btec assessment, designed and delivered a Samba workshop to a group of students from Year 1 to Year 6 at West Blatchington Primary. They taught basic techniques and joined them together for a group performance at the end. They showed excellent teaching techniques and were creative and clear in delivering their lessons, working as part of a team to give the students a basic grounding in Samba and group playing.
Pupils Get Close up to a Heart! A recent Friday saw much excitement in Year 5 at West Blatchington where two lucky classes performed heart dissections as part of the Hove Park and West Blatchington Science partnership.

We saw this as a great opportunity to really engage students in their Health topic and the children really enjoyed the challenge of taking part in a session that would normally be only reserved for Year 8 students and above!
Brilliant Bugsy Malone On Thursday 19th and Friday 20th June, the talented children of West Blatchington Primary School took to the stage in a production of Bugsy Malone. A dedicated team of students from Hove Park School worked alongside them, using their theatrical expertise to ensure the West Blatchington children shone on stage. The Spring and Summer terms were filled with line-learning, acting rehearsals, set-building, prop-making (including the infamous Bugsy ‘Splurge Guns’ made by a member of the Premises Team from West Blatchington Primary!), orchestral and technical rehearsals…the list goes on. The dedication of children, parents and staff from both schools highlighted the strong sense of community, and it certainly paid off. Well done for your fantastic work!

James Wins Jewellery Competition Year 9 student James was earlier this year crowned winner in a competition run by the prestigious Brighton jewellers Goodman Morris. The competition brief invited local secondary school students to design a piece inspired by Brighton’s love of fashion and creativity challenging them to: “design a piece of jewellery for a modern day dandy.” The competition was fierce with all final design ideas displayed in Goodman and Morris’ shop during the award event. James’s winning piece was a pair of earrings with a peacock design based on Elton John and a concert that he played in Brighton. As his prize, James had his design made into real silver by the jewellers. Becky Johnson of Goodman Morris said: “We were so impressed that James had responded so directly to the brief and translated it into a wearable piece of jewellery. “

Round Up There has been so much creative energy in the art rooms this year, making it very difficult to select individual pieces to highlight here. However, it’s worth mentioning that our newest and most exciting projects have been the Niki de Saint Phalle sculptures, produced by Year 8 students, and Steam Punk clay sculptures by Year 9. There has also been some very exciting art generated from the Year 11 ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ project. Lots of bleeding limbs, decapitated heads and generally disturbing outcomes have filled the art room. Some great contributions to the sensational exhibition set to take place in July.
New Photography Studio This year we are very proud to announce the launch of the new darkroom. We have celebrated this by involving our Year 11 Photography Enrichment group, who had the amazing opportunity to work with professional photographer Anthony Campbell. He shared his professional expertise with students allowing them to have a taste of what it is like to be a photographer in the real world. Highlights of this experience were light paintings, studio photography and exploring shutter speed together with the Enrichment Dance group. Anthony Campbell was blown away by the enthusiasm and commitment of the students at Hove Park. The exhibition was a very proud moment, and VIP guests were encouraged to have their photographs taken by our photography students during the show.
Brighton Uni Photography Project Years 12 and 13 Photography students had the opportunity to collaborate with Brighton University Photography students on a project called Compact Opportunity and create work around the theme of Family Politics. Students visited the Jerwood gallery and the Tate Modern in London and were encouraged to engage in some challenging work and communicate thought and feelings about their experiences. Later, the Brighton University students came to Hove Park and involved our students in workshops they had planned. A newspaper was made by the University which exhibited the students’ work and the experience and collaboration was shared in the school.
Grease Props Students from the Year 10 Community Arts group made giant diner food for the school production of Grease. We looked at the work of Pop Artists Claes Oldenburg and Wayne Thiebaud before we started, creating the giant props from cardboard and papier-m창che. Students made a mouthwatering array of outsized foods including a hotdog, fries, ice-cream and bottles of pop. Working collaboratively to share ideas they used a range of materials. The Year 10 and Sixth Form Art team worked hard towards a rigid time schedule to create a truly innovative set, including props and illustrative poster designs.

Here’s One We MADE Earlier! This year we have completely changed the way that creativity is taught in Year 7. The frontiers between Art and Design Technology have been approached in a very different way that has had a huge impact. Now, rather than trying to be creative within the limits of a single or double lesson, each week every Year 7 pupil attends a whole-day workshop in which they work on innovative and exciting projects that revolve around an overall theme. The workshops follow a trail through the Art and Design Technology specialisms including Art Skills, Craft, 3D, STEM, Paint, Food and Technology Skills.
54
Hove Park School
The theme stands to unite the projects and imbed the learning, while the workshops
explode with technical skills based activities. The aim of all workshops is to give each pupil an intensive period of time to explore and produce a piece of work and demonstrate a range of new skills and understanding. They are able to apply understanding from one workshop to the other and outcomes progressively show a more confident and inspired level of ingenuity. The proof is in the pudding and, thanks to an incredibly dedicated team of staff, we have transformed the energy that our subject areas generate into something incredibly exciting. Some examples of projects themes to date are: MADE in Brighton MADE in the style of MADE to be recycled MADE to move and MADE in nature

Anthony is passionate about his subject and has used it as an art form to create incredible work both personally and professionally. Luckily for us, he recently offered to run a free photography course for Year 11 students teaching them advanced photography skills including depth of field, and portraiture. This culminated in an exhibition in school, giving students the chance to show their fantastic work. He has supported our department entirely voluntarily but has been completely committed each week arriving with equipment, expertise and enthusiasm. A genuine pleasure to work with.

As usual, people from all corners of Brighton and Hove came to see the outstanding creative work Hove Park has to offer. This is an event which puts every student into the limelight as they each have at least one piece of work on display. It is always a very proud moment for the Art and Design Technology team, but more importantly for the students who really put the hours in to produce thoughtful, informed and imaginative responses.

Recycled Materials At the end of last year, a group of Year 10 Art students were involved in a project working on portraits made with recycled materials. The project theme was inspired by artists Jason Mercier, who uses recycled materials which have links with the people he depicts, and Matt Small, who uses materials he finds in skips. The students have used Lego, broken CDs, pills, food, toys, pencil sharpenings, old clothes, bits of plastic and anything else they could get their hands on to create their art works. Pictured here is a portrait of Jessie J by Erini made with broken CDs.

Year 7 Football
A new school, new teachers and new friends but the one thing which was on my mind at the beginning of Year 7 was what the football team would be like! A massive turn out of boys for the trials started the year with 50 boys wanting to try out for the school team making this a huge task for training for Mr. Pulling the football coach. We began to work as a strong team and played well together, supporting and encouraging each other to play their best. Everyone on the team has a passion for football and we all play to win. At the beginning of the season we had a slow start as we unfortunately lost to Longhill School. But the team’s attitude and enthusiasm got us to the 4th round of the National Cup. We pushed ourselves to the limit to reach the Town Cup final, held at Whitehawk Stadium. Dorothy Stringer, our opposition, quickly scored five goals in the first half but our heads did not drop. We were focussed and determined to fight back and as a team we knew what we were capable of. Within the last 10 remaining minutes Haydon scored a hat-trick and Yezen scored a fantastic goal, making the final score 6-4. It was a great game to end our first season together and we look forward to doing even better in Year 8 and bringing home some cups! I have personally loved being captain of such an enthusiastic football team. The boys have been outstanding this season and I look forward to having another successful season in Year 8 with them.
Year 8 Football
The season got off to an alright start with winning the first game 6-1 against Tanbridge in the 2nd Round of the National Cup. The 3rd Round came shortly after the win but this time Hove Park couldn’t find a victory as a 3-3 draw after extra time went to penalties as Hove Park lost 5-4 to Felpham. Warden Park in the County Cup Round 2 were beaten in a 6-3 thriller. Shortly after that County Cup game, Tideway were thrashed 10-2 in the Town Cup Quarter Final. The Quarter Final of the County Cup came and Hove Park faced Cardinal Newman. Hove Park were blown away in a 11 goal thriller. The score line ended up 7-4 to Cardinal Newman. After that loss Hove Park came back strong with winning 6-1 in the Town Cup Semi Final. Hove Park then had to face Dorothy Stinger again but in the League. Sadly the game ended up in an 3-3 draw. Unfortunately Hove Park were defeated by Longhill School 6-1 in the League. The other League game against Cardinal Newman was not as bad as the last game we played against them; this time we only lost 1-0. The last League game of the season wasn’t a great game as Hove Park lost 3-1 to Varndean. We reached the Town Cup final at Whitehawk FC and two goals in each half by James secured the Town Cup for the second year running.

Year 9 Football Year 10 Football
The Hove Park Year 9 side have had one of their most successful seasons so far. They played thirteen games this season. They won nine of those thirteen games. They only drew two games and were only beaten twice in the National and County Cup. They started the season well in the National Cup and then had success in the County Cup but sadly lost to Dorothy Stringer. After this defeat they then went on to win back to back games in the League, finishing second - a superb effort.
Moving into Year 10 football season was always going to be a big task to emulate the past three years of success that the boys have had. The past three years have included three County Cup finals , Town Cup and one ESFA National Cup Final. We started the new season where we left off, with a very comfortable victory over Blatchington Mill, playing the type of football that has made it so enjoyable to watch the boys. We were knocked out of the National and County Cup after a couple of rounds.
The last three games of the season they played very consistently putting in near-perfect performances in the Quarter and Semi-Finals of the Brighton Town Cup.
We won a couple of league games in a season which has been a bit stop/start due mostly to the weather conditions, which have affected all sporting fixtures up and down the country.
In the final of the Town Cup they played Dorothy Stringer, who they had previously lost to in the County Cup and played the game of their school lives, winning in dramatic fashion in extra time 2-1.
Unfortunately, just like last year we have lost a couple of players and been unable to call on a number of our academy players for every match due to their commitments with pro clubs. Leon, Mathew and Danny have all been doing very well at their respective clubs.
This means that this Hove Park side has now won the Town Cup twice in three years, a truly brilliant end to a fantastic season. Congratulations to the entire squad.

Being unable to field our academy players has presented opportunities to new players to join the squad and take part in matches. It has also given other players the chance to step up their game
Year 11 Football and lead the team. Billy, Harvey, Max, Morgan, Alex and as always the team captain Dom have shown that they are more than capable of doing this. We also found a new right back in Joe and Sam also put in some outstanding displays with his wing play, making it look so easy going past opponents. After going through the season trying out new positions and formations with both new and existing squad members, we went into our final match of the season looking more like the team we have come to recognise. The final match of the season was against a strong Downlands side. During the match the boys produced some of the most fluent passing football that they ever have. It was exciting to watch and they must have felt excited on the pitch to be part of it. The final score was a 6 v 3 win. Highlights of the match were a brilliant volley from a corner by captain Dom. It really was an outstanding finish and was just a shame that there were not more people there to see it. The goal would not have looked out of place on Match Of The Day Goal Of The Month. It went in the top corner off the underside of the cross bar. And then to finish the match off a first school football goal for one of the new squad members Toby. This goal came off the back of one of our trademark passing moves and ended with a good finish at the far post by Toby. Moving into Year 11 with the new squad that has been put together, hard work and a really positive attitude, let’s wait and see what happens.
Mr Pulling
Year 11 managed to finish the year on a high with an excellent 4-2 win over local rivals Cardinal Newman in the League. Before this game it looked likely that the team could have gone the whole season without winning one game, which was unheard of with this cup winning side from Year 9. The nucleus of the squad remained intact, however a lack of quality in the most important areas of the pitch resulted in games being lost during this season. The team progressed in the National Cup, but only due to a walkover when William Parker couldn’t play us, but then the boys were to bow out of this cup in the next round after a long trip to Tunbridge Wells. Progression was halted in both the County Cup and Town Cup, which only left the League as something to play for. Unfortunately, which is often the case with Year 11, several other schools couldn’t play us which meant games against Patcham and Longhill were not fulfilled. Blatchington Mill did the League and Cup double over us, leaving the Newman game as our final game at Hove Park. Hopes were high for a final win and it started well with a far post Travis header. However, a familiar pattern emerged when Newman scored twice with long balls over our defence. Being 2-1 down at half time, a rousing team-talk lifted spirits and we bossed the 2nd half and eventually came out on top thanks to a hat trick from the returning George. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for their commitment and contribution to football at Hove Park over the last five years. We have some excellent memories such as the tour to Spain, the League win in Year 8 and the Town Cup Final win in Year 9. Every one of you has worn the Hove Park shirt with pride and honour and it has been a pleasure to lead you through your football education.

Sussex Athletics Nassfeld Ski Championships Trip 2014 Hove Park took thirteen athletes to the Sussex Schools Athletics Championships for Years 7 and 8 at Christ’s Hospital School on Thursday 27th February.
During February half term, the annual ski trip departed for the alpine ski resort of Nassfeld, Austria for the very first time with 39 students from Years 9, 11 and Sixth Form.
The Year 7 girls team performed very well finishing 30th, 76th & 104th. 180 runners took part in this race, making these very impressive finishing places.
Despite a gruelling journey, the students enjoyed six days of thrilling skiing which started with learning to ski on the easy nursery slopes. The students gained confidence and it wasn’t long before the intermediate group led by Meggy had tried the more difficult runs.
The Year 7 boys also put in some great performances with another 180 students running and they were placed 36th, 40th, 131st, 139th a really great effort. The Year 8 girls took on a longer course with 150 runners and were placed 45th, 69th, 92th and 132nd on a tough course. The final race saw our two Year 8 boys finish 38th and 83rd from a field of again 150, another fantastic effort. It was a great day and the Hove Park students showed great commitment and willingness on a very challenging course.
68 Hove Park School
The advanced group were already flying and were challenging themselves around the resort, whilst the beginner groups honed their skills on the blue runs. A highlight of the week was the chance to ski over the border to Italy and experience a traditional Italian pizza. A full après ski programme was provided, which included swimming, bowling and the quiz night. The week ended with the legendary last night disco at the local Posci Bar, where everyone got into the spirit of the trip and donned fancy dress to bring the fantastic trip to a close.
Matthew Upson Inspires Students By Student Reporter, Isabel, Year 10 Matthew Upson, former international player and Brighton and Hove Ablion’s central defender, ended a busy week of training with a visit to Hove Park School to be interviewed by student journalists about his role at the Albion and his illustrious international career. Upson, who joined the Seagulls in January, raved about the new stadium and the fantastic welcome he has had from the fans. Upson said it was a great club and felt that with the right investment the Seagulls had the potential to reach the Premier League in the future. Whilst there have been many great moments in his career Upson said one of the most extraordinary was when he played for England in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. “When the national anthem was played I felt very emotional,” he said “but then became clinical and focused because we had a job to do”. Upson went on to say how his most memorable moment was scoring in the World Cup: “It was an intense moment with all eyes upon you...then I scored. It was amazing.” His tip for the best way to prepare for challenges in sport and study is to programme ourselves with a good attitude towards our goals. He advised students to “picture a positive outcome and have a belief you won’t fail.”

Netball For the first time in Brighton and Hove, all the local school teams were divided into a Super League (comprising the most highest scoring schools from the previous season), as well as the East/Central/ West league.
Year 7 Netball The Year 7 Netball squad were involved in the Super League as well as the West League, so they were competing with the best in the City, and more than held their own. Although the girls lost a few matches, they showed a steady improvement throughout the season, and their dogged determination meant both the A and B teams’ results improved. They have shown fantastic commitment and team spirit throughout the season, with both the A and B teams consistently attending training, even during the coldest winter months, and all matches have been played in great spirit. The girls deserve to be congratulated on a fantastic start to their netball careers at Hove Park.
Year 8 Netball The Year 8 squad have also been involved in both the Super League and the West League. They have shown a tremendous attitude towards training, and this year’s group should be commended on their enthusiasm and resilience. Many of the Year 8s played up an age-group when Year 9 players were injured. A number of the Year 8s have also shown great leadership qualities, by taking responsibility for organising the team and leading warm-ups for younger students. The Year 8 Tournament, hosted at Hove Park, was certainly the highlight of their season, as they narrowly missed out on a Semi-Final place.
70
Hove Park School
Year 9 Netball The Year 9s finished their netball careers at the Valley Campus on a high, and many of the squad will be awarded their half colours for commitment to training at the next Sports Presentation Evening. The highlight for this group was also the Brighton and Hove Tournament, where again they just missed out on a Semi-Final place. Congratulations to all girls involved for their continued involvement with extra-curricular sport. A special mention should also go to the GCSE Sports Organisers, a group of Year 11 students who organised tournaments for the whole of Brighton and Hove as part of their coursework. They were extremely professional, efficiently and independently running the events. Staff from other local schools, as well as the GCSE PE external moderator, have commented on how impressed they were by the girls and their maturity and fantastic leadership skills.
Years 10 & 11 Netball This year, netball for Years 10 and 11 was fairly low key as the area trialled the delivery of a new set up with the Leagues. Year 11 completed their final year of netball with several wins and only one loss. The strength and depth of talent in the team shone out as they played and defeated Dorothy Stringer in one of their earlier matches. They were also victorious very early in the season when winning the Year 11 Tournament on home turf at Nevill Campus. Year 10s got started with their season quite late and suffered some defeats as they struggled to get used to a new style team. We are looking forward to pulling things together for next year.
Rugby Year 7 The Year 7 Rugby Team have made good progress throughout the year and have developed into a well balanced side. With very few club rugby players, most of the year 7 students had never played a competitive game of rugby before they joined Hove Park School. The match against Brighton College at the end of the season demonstrated the rapid rate of the progress which the boys have achieved. The score was a draw, 19 points a piece, with the college scoring in the dying moments. A game which we should have won. A special mention must be made to the team captain, Charlie, who led a team of students who were unfamiliar with each other at the start of the season and yet grew into a cohesive unit of friends playing sport together. Well done to all the boys and bring on Year 8.
Year 8 The Hove Park Year 8 Rugby side have had a tough season against some strong opponents. They have become a tight squad over the season, made strong improvements and have progressed well throughout the year. The real highlight of the season was the away trip to Brighton College, where a full Year 8 squad took on Brighton College and put in the performance of the season winning strongly, scoring some great tries. The team performed well in all the other games but often conceded some late tries that affected their final scores. They will go into Year 9 with some great experiences setting them up for another competitive rugby season. Well done to the whole squad.

Hove Park School
Year 9 The Year 9 team had a mixed season this year with some good wins throughout the year including a great result against St Andrews School. Their performances have been stronger than their results indicate and this season has seen the emergence of new players in the side, as well as regular team members taking the lead on the field. There is some real enthusiasm and drive from the current members of the squad. Their future success will hinge on recruitment of players to strengthen the numbers available for the side.
Year 10 The Year 10 side continued their improvement as a team this year, playing some exceptionally strong rugby at times. They won the Town 10-a-side competition at the start of the year and continued this success through the season, making it to the Town Cup Finals where they eventually finished runners up against Cardinal Newman School in a really competitive final. In summary, a season of rapid improvement and great potential for the future in both the Town and County Cup.
Year 11 The Year 11 side played out their last few games at Hove Park School against some strong opposition. It is a true credit to them that they are able to field a side when so many schools around them can no longer do so. Unfortunately in a year thin on the ground for fixtures their competitive season was short lived with early exits from both the Town and County Cup at the start of the season to Cardinal Newman and Dorothy Stringer. A combined Varndean and Patcham side gave us a finishing game to the season, played in a competitive and friendly spirit.

Taekwon-do Champs Hove Park students George and James took part in the ITF Taekwon-do World Championships 2013 held in Benidorm. Impressively, both boys came away with bronze medals in the Team Sparring events. George also competed in the Individual Power event where he was placed 5th, narrowly missing out on a second medal position. England came 8th overall out of 52 countries. Hove Park is very proud that TWO of our students not only made it all the way to the Taekwon-do World Championships, but came away with medals! George and James are heading to the 2014 World Championships in Jamaica this August. Good luck boys!
Yoga Masterclass International Yoga Champion Jospeh Encinia came to school to talk to students about the benefits of yoga. After suffering a heart attack at the age of 13, Joseph found his way back to health through daily practice and is now passionate about the benefits of yoga for young people. Joseph stunned students with some gravity defying poses and gave a practical workshop teaching some of the more accessible poses. He told the class; “Start yoga now and you will never lose your health”, explaining that the discipline is beneficial not only for the body, but for the mind too.“Yoga teaches determination, concentration, patience and self-control. It combines a healthy body and a steady mind and will help young people in all aspects of their life.”
Brighton and £600 Raised Hove Albion in in Sport Relief the Community Obstacle Mile Over the past two terms we have been working with Albion in the Community and the The Football League Trust to promote and encourage girls participation in football from 14 years+. Recently Albion in the Community were accredited with being the best club in the country delivering girls’ programmes through their work with us and four other schools across Sussex and have thanked us for agreeing to be part of such a successful project. The programme has made a big impact in keeping girls engaged with the sport as well as encouraging new players to take part in coaching sessions and events. On Thursday 22nd May, twenty girls in Years 9 and 10 represented Hove Park School and Brighton and Hove in a tournament to culminate the end of the football season. Both teams played some fantastic football and finished the league rounds in 2nd and 7th place respectively.
On Friday 21st March our Year 10 Sports Leaders ran an Obstacle Mile event at West Blatchington Primary School in aid of Sports Relief. Altogether they ran and supported 12 races with pupils from Year 1 up to Year 6. They demonstrated excellent leadership skills throughout the day. They were extremely professional, highly enthusiastic and motivated all the young pupils to succeed. A big well done to all the pupils at West Blatchington who showed amazing effort, enthusiasm and talent in completing the course. As a joint school partnership we were delighted to have raised over £600 for charity.

Brighton & Hove Town Swimming Gala The Hove Park swimming team had a fantastic night at the Brighton and Hove Town Swimming Galas. The golds were too numerous to list and Hove Park swimmers medalled in most events.
Let’s Dance at The Dome Year 11 performed on the first of two nights at Let’s Dance at The Dome in Brighton. Their Charlestoninspired piece was performed to an incredible standard and received rapturous applause.
Rugby Old Boys At the weekend (17th May) Hove Park Olds Boys played their annual game against Hove RFC. The result was a very diplomatic draw, 34pts a piece. It was a very successful community day with exstudents coming along just to watch the match along with a number of ex-parents. Over 20 exstudents played in the match along with myself and ex-PE colleague Geraint Jones.
It seems a shame to pick individual highlights from such a fantastic team, however there were Golds for Joel in all three individual events as well as Gold for Louis in the individual front crawl and double Golds for Louis in the individual back and crawl events. Wins also came for Year 7 girls Sienna and Mary in their events. The real team success was in the relay events which were all superb. The boys won 5 from 6 relays and the team took the overall relay Gold for an 8 swimmer squadron event (huge shield pictured). The boys success in both their relay and individual events also secured them the Overall Boys Winners Cup. As always it was a fantastic display of the hidden talents within the school. Special mention to Amy, the team captain, who won straight silvers in her 7th and final year. An enormous thank you also goes to to Miss Stone and Miss Gibbs who coordinated the gala on the night alongside Sue Medlock (Amy’s mum) who has helped run the event on poolside for the last 7 years!

Sports Success Evening Last September the PE department staged the annual Sports Presentation Evening at Hove Town Hall to celebrate the sporting success of the students at Hove Park. Nearly 200 students and 150 parents and carers packed into the great hall to see an evening of celebration from the previous year’s sporting successes. The audience were treated to a dance display and montages of sporting action including the annual sports day highlights. Many students won awards on the night, for being part of a successful team or for an individual award, with the awards being handed out by UK athletics coach Jon Bigg (pictured). Jon, a promising international athlete before injury cut his track career short, is head coach for British Athletics and currently coaches Charlie Grice who has just got commonwealth qualifying time in 1500m and ranked number 1 in UK with time of 3.36.

Year 7 Girls’ Football
The Year 7 girls’ football team have enjoyed a fantastic season. Once again, due to a high level of enthusiasm, Hove Park were able to consistently field two teams. We were very lucky to be able to purchase a personalised team kit due to the kind contribution from ‘Bishops Move’. Each set of kit has the student’s surname and their favoured squad number. As well as looking very smart, the whole squad have demonstrated fantastic levels of commitment by attending training every week. In the league they won games against Dorothy Stringer, BACA, Patcham and Brighton and Hove High School. Hove Park drew with PACA and only marginally lost against Cardinal Newman. They finished as runners-up in the Brighton and Hove League.
U14 Girls’ Football
In another closely fought contest The U14 girls’ football team finished 3rd in the Brighton and Hove league. Highlights included wins against Patcham, Blatchington Mill, Longhill, Peacehaven and Brighton and Hove High. The year groups from 7-11 also joined forces to compete in both the U13, U14 U15 and U16 National Cups as well as U13 and U15 County Cups. The U13 team came up against some strong opposition in the 2nd round of the National Cup but were more successful in the County cup where they managed to get to the Quarter Finals before losing to an excellent team from Woking High School. The U14 team managed to get to the 3rd round of the National competition, the U15s, the 2nd and the U16s the 3rd.
In the Year 7 tournament, Hove Park beat Peacehaven on penalties in the final to finish as champions. A fantastic display of goal-keeping from Ella.
In the under U16s County Cup we were also successful in getting to the Quarter Final stages.
Well done to the whole squad for a great season.
Well done to all the girls and a huge thank you to our sponsors ACG and Bishop’s Move who very kindly sponsored the Year 7 and U14 kits.

Sports Day 2013 The Normans sprinted, leaped and jumped their way to victory, in their best conquest since 1066, at Hove Park’s 2013 Sports Day. The annual event, held at Withdean Sports Complex, saw competitors from every House embracing the spirit of the event creating a positive sporting atmosphere, helped on by hundreds of enthusiastic spectators. Records were broken and hard fought battles lost and won in both track and field events. Happily, the event also raised an impressive £300 for local hospice The Martlets through refreshments sales and collection tins. Competing athletes were kitted out with Martlets T-shirts to help promote and raise awareness.

Student Performs in Billy Elliot Year 8 student Lily has been performing in the awardwinning hit musical Billy Elliot in London’s West End as a ballet girl. After four weeks of auditions, Lily spent five days a week for six weeks over the summer holidays in rehearsals in London and had her opening night on 11th September. She finished in the show at Easter this year. Lily performed two to three times a week, going up to London after school for evening performances, or leaving at break if she was also performing in the matinee, often getting back home after midnight! Lily said “Being in Billy Elliot was amazing. It’s been hard work, the rehearsals were very tough, everything you do has to be perfect every time, but it was lots of fun and I made some great friends. It was really exciting being in a famous musical and learning what it’s like to work in a West End theatre - but sometimes it wasn’t easy getting up for school after a show or not being allowed any holiday during my contract!”

Shakespeare Festival Last October, Hove Park students took part in Shakespeare Schools Festival for the second time, with a production of The Tempest at Roedean Theatre. The venue director gave high praise to the cast during feedback for the intensity and calibre of their performances. She also made special note of our first technical student, Peter who operated the sound and was the only student technician to participate that night. The cast worked on the production for two months, attending after school and weekend rehearsals. For some it was their first experience of acting on a professional stage, for others it was a chance to develop their experience. This national festival celebrates the work of Shakespeare and brings together hundreds of schools and thousands of young people. We were honoured to perform the play that contains the Festival’s motto; “We are such stuff as dreams are made of”.
One to Watch - NEXX Jack and Sacha are two members of a five-piece group called NEXX, a heavy metal band which has gone very far in a short period of time. Since September 2013 the band has released two EP’s, played at several gigs and festivals including “Sounds from the City” – a two day Brighton and Hove festival that showcases up and coming talent. They have also filmed a music video for their song “Insomnia”, and impressed all who have seen them. In just 9 months the band has come far and is definitely one to watch for the future.
Leading Edge
Winter Concerts
The very end of the last academic year saw Hove Park School, Blatchington Mill School and Hangleton Junior School join forces to create another very successful Leading Edge performance.
The end of the first term was a great opportunity for students across the school to showcase their work in the creative subjects.
The three schools joined their orchestras together to put on an afternoon of superb music with original pieces written by students. This year saw Lily and Thomas from Hove Park (both in Year 7 at the time) take part in the composition workshops writing two excellent pieces for the combined orchestra. After only one rehearsal students invited parents, who were treated to a superb collection of orchestral performances as well as some excellent solos from talented students across the schools.
88 Hove Park School
With so much talent and work to share, two separate concerts were held with both Nevill and Valley students getting the opportunity to shine. Audiences were treated to a range of high quality drama and music performances as well as being able to see some of the work being done in Creative Media and Art. Nevill Campus also had the Hove Park Christmas Calendar for sale that was designed and created by students in their art lessons. Both concerts were very well received with students immediately asking when the next one was going to take place.
One to Watch - Gig & The Girlfriend The last five years has seen a combination of four extremely talented students to create Gig and the Girlfriend. Jacob, Leila, Max and Luke have performed individually and as the four-piece with great success and acclaim. All four have been commended for their musical talents and Leila also for her acting ability as well. They all have interests outside of the band and whether they will remain together and become famous is unknown. One thing is for sure though; watch out for these four talented individuals in the future as they are sure to be noticed.

Grease Review by Kai, Year 10 Hove Park’s Drama team did it again - with a gloriously glamorous Broadway-style performance of the world famous 70’s musical: Grease. The leading roles of Danny and Sandy were played flawlessly by Max and India. Max portrayed perfectly the role of Danny, the rebellious teen leader of the T-Birds, Rydell High School’s most famous reject gang. India’s performance of Sandy, the well-mannered pristine Australian schoolgirl was gracious yet powerful, stunning the audience with her dynamic singing voice. Leila’s performance of Rizzo was awe-inspiring, impeccably demonstrating the sarcasm and promiscuity of the ItalianAmerican teenage rebel. Eleanor depicted excellently the popular, boasty Marty, her solo, “Freddie My Love” taunting the audience with her frisky performance. Lily and Ashley’s portrayal of the love struck couple, Jan and Roger, was excellent, with a priceless performance of their tongue in cheek duet “Mooning”. Isabel also deserves a mention for her hilariously exaggerated enthusiasm in the portrayal of Rydell High School’s nerdiest cheerleader, “Patty Simcox”, bringing a real element of comedy to the show.

Mr Trimmer commented “It was fabulous. Speaking as a former drama teacher, you know it is a really good show when you can sit back and relax and that was precisely the case with this excellent production.”

Oxbridge Successes This year has seen our students gain places at some of the most prestigious universities in the country, including Molly who is undertaking her first year at Cambridge reading English and Grant who will be leaving us this summer with hopefully a handful of A*s to read Philosophy and French at Magdalen College, Oxford. We are very proud of all of our students and we have an excellent reputation nationally that finds our students highly desirable both in further education and employment. The application for Oxbridge is notoriously gruelling and both students were put through their paces completing aptitude tests and academic interviews that require nerves of steel. Grant had no less than six interviews in two days. As Grant states “I can most ardently confirm that without the will to study my chosen fields at such an esteemed university, I may have survived neither the Modern Languages Aptitude Test nor the six interviews in Oxford!
Debating Matters By Sixth Form debater, Farrell Arriving on the back of a victory in the first round of the National ‘Debating Matters’ competition, the team was cautious but hopeful of their chances of further progression within the competition. The debate team arrived at Canterbury Christ Church University at around 10:30 and passed into the main hall, where they were given directions to the rooms in which the debates would take place. The first topic the group (Adam and Farrell) debated was “Lads mags are degrading for women and should be covered up.” The first few minutes of the debate proved to be a nerveracking experience, but the debaters quickly became more confident as time progressed. The judges felt that both teams had done well however, and it seemed that the result would not be clear cut. The next debate (Amy and Nagi)

was “Western countries should not encourage coal-fired power stations in the developing world.” Both members gave a great account of themselves according to the judges. Later in the main hall Hove Park found out its fate. Unfortunately, on this occasion, Hove Park’s debate team had been defeated, however, Amy received a well-deserved commendation by the judges for her performance in her debate. The judges felt that she made a series of valuable arguments and that ‘with just a bit more confidence, she could be an excellent debater.’ The final debate, ‘State funding of the Arts is essential to a civilised society’, which would decide the winner of the Regional stage of the competition, proved to be both a humorous and highly enjoyable experience. In the end, the Royal Grammar School of Guildford, were the winners, their passion in debate leading them to a fully deserved victory.
Science Trip to Sussex University This year has seen Hove Park Sixth Form strengthen links with all of our local universities. We have had a number of students who have been part of a Study Experience at Sussex, attending lectures and learning more about university life. As part of this, A-Level Chemistry Students were tasked to make geometric isomers of an organic compound. They purified and recrystallised their products before taking their samples to be analysed using state-of-the-art spectroscopy analysis. Finally, they were shown the actual mass spectrometer which lead to the Nobel Prize winning discovery of the C60 molecule by Professor Sir Harry Kroto in 1985.
The Clocktower Sanctuary Hove Park Sixth Form doesn’t just aim to develop academic excellence but works to ensure our students leave us as caring citizens who contribute to their local community. This year saw the Student Council organise a Christmas collection for local homeless charity The Clocktower Santuary. The charity supports vulnerable young people who may be sofa surfing or sleeping rough. A spokesperson from the Clocktower Sanctuary said,“Thank you so much for the wonderful range of presents, clothes and food. They were all instantly snapped-up by clients, and really appreciated. Please do pass on our sincere thanks to everyone involved from Hove Park: you really did us proud, and you all ensured a lot of young homeless people had a truly festive event. I’ve never seen so many happy faces!”

Parting Words Seven years, seven productions, Hove Park has enabled me to develop my passion for the theatre and meet wonderful people who have helped guide me and develop my skills and confidence to perform.
Ashley, Media Studies, Drama, Creative Writing and Travel. As I prepare to start my university adventure, I will always be grateful to my brilliant teachers and the many unorthodox and creative teaching methods that have generously enhanced my learning.
Alice, Biology, Psychology, Philosophy and Theatre Studies. My time at Hove Park has been a blast and the two years at Sixth Form has enabled me to meet new people and make friends. I’ve enjoyed learning new subjects I haven’t tried before, which helped me discover what I want to do in the future.
Ryan, Chemistry, Physics, Maths & Biology. I’ve loved studying Science here at Hove Park and I am planning on continuing with Chemistry at University. However if it hadn’t been for Hove Park’s brilliant Science teachers I would have probably never found my flair for this subject.
Jordan, Travel & Tourism, Geography and PE. Seven years at Hove Park and we’ve all come so far, much like the school. I’ll always cherish the friends and memories I’ve made here from my first day in Year 7 as an awkward shy child to my last few days as a confident Year 13 adult.
The greatest years of my life have been spent at Hove Park and I’m really going to miss this place. I have made lifelong friends and I cannot recommend the Sixth Form enough as the community environment and the supportive staff are simply great!
Jack, Business, PE and Psychology. I have thoroughly enjoyed my seven years at Hove Park and it’s fantastic to see the opportunities that are now available to younger students, showing the way the school has transformed. The Sixth Form has a great community atmosphere and offers memorable trips and social events.
Sarah, PE, Travel, Geography and Football Development. My time at the school and college has seen me face many challenges but the support I have received from teachers and the Head of Sixth Form has really helped me along the way. The staff are very supportive and the whole experience has given me a much better understanding of what I want to do in the future.
Ben, Health & Social Care, Government & Politics and Psychology. I have spent eight long years at Hove Park and have loved it through the bad times and the good times. My most memorable moments are during the Sixth Form as I’ve had so many opportunities to meet people and learn new things.
Peter, Drama, Creative Writing, Media, ICT and Travel.
Laura, Biology, English and Psychology.

Farewell & Good Luck! Gill Page Ending 13 years at Hove Park with the current Year 11 target grades has got to be leaving on a high. I started teaching in 1976 and have seen so many changes in policy, styles and methods of teaching over the years and to see it all coming together successfully in my final year is a pleasure. Starting out as a PE teacher, I loved teaching what I truly enjoyed – being active, taking teams to competitions and helping the occasional super star to achieve county level status. In 1990 after the 1989 Education Act, Sex Education became compulsory for the first time and I was asked to teach it. I was petrified to begin with but as the years have passed the Life Skills taught in PSHE have, I believe, become an essential part of the curriculum, particularly with the explosion of social media. And despite the hard work, I loved being Head of Year, with each year group becoming my “special” students. This past 18 months being responsible for KS4 Safeguarding has been an eye-opener. Working with and appreciating the joint skills of our Hove Park team, interacting with social services and the challenges each individual case brought. Tiring – yes, but never boring, my teaching career has kept me on my toes, continually learning new skills, teaching Travel and Tourism, this year Health and Social Care and, in particular,

Technology. Even I can now produce a PPT and burn a DVD with confidence! I would like to thank all my colleagues, both teachers and the wider workforce for their help, friendship and laughs over the years and wish you all and Hove Park success in the future.

Huxley Knox-Macaulay I can’t believe that I started at Hove Park over 9 years ago! The time has gone incredibly quickly and it almost seems like yesterday when I took a phone call to say that I had been successful at interview. Hove Park has changed in so many different ways over those years and despite some challenging times, it is fantastic to be part of a school with a national and international reputation for innovation and excellence. The last 9 years have not only seen changes at Hove Park, but also in the education system nationally. There is a sense that the rate of change will continue for all schools and irrespective of what happens in the future, I know that Hove Park will continue to move from strength to strength. There have been so many highlights over the last few years but I think the moment that we heard that we had achieved a Good judgement from OFSTED was a real highlight. That was matched by our first big jump in achievement in 2010 when we started our journey towards being one of the most improved schools in the country. The reality that even more of our students were being successful was incredibly rewarding. I shall miss the thousands of inspirational students and many talented staff I have worked with over the past 9 years. The joy of working in a school is that you never stop learning, whether it is a busy Monday morning or a wet Friday afternoon!
I am looking forward to my first headship at Ratton School in Eastbourne but will never forget the year and half I was Acting Headteacher at Hove Park. It gave me a real insight into the tremendous potential of all our students and a strong sense that being ‘outstanding’ is well within our reach. I look forward to hearing about all your future successes and……..aim high and keep smiling!

What Next? – Ambition and Drive in the Year Ahead strong partnership with West Blatchington but also with other local schools and schools further afield, where we will look to ensure that we are measuring ourselves against some of the best schools in the country. One development that we are currently working on within school is to ensure that all of our schemes of work, for all subjects, are published on iTunes U so that they are readily available for parents/ carers and students to access. This will also help to improve the dialogue between home and school bringing teacher feedback much closer to parents/ carers and helping to ensure that parents/ carers are properly informed of their child’s progress.
I am confident that this summer will see yet another record set of exam results in what is likely to be an overall national dip in standards. Even with these record results, we will have by no means peaked in terms of setting and achieving ambitious targets for our students. Next year will see another record set of results that may well establish the standard for other schools to follow. In short, we will continue to put achievement first whilst ensuring that all students, regardless of whatever barriers they may face, have the same access to a world class education. This year will also be about putting down the foundations that will enable us to punch through to becoming an outstanding school. Partnership will continue to be a central part of our strategy as we will look to utilise examples of the best practice from the best schools to challenge our own thinking and development in the year ahead. This will include our very

We are also looking to streamline the way that homework is recorded and feedback is given, using a purpose built app that can be accessed by parents/ carers from any computer and give immediate and real time updates of what their child is doing across a range of subjects. We are hoping to have both of these ready for the beginning of next term. Finally, we want to celebrate some of the outstanding work that our students are currently producing by showcasing it on our new blog ‘a1students.org’. We are already trialling this and receiving a number of hits worldwide from other students and schools, who are commenting on how brilliant the work is. Please make time to go on and look at the work and to comment on any pieces that you like. It gives a really powerful sense of audience to students and is a great motivation for students to excel.
