The wardrobe in the master bedroom of this renovated beachside home needed to be upgraded. Howards created the ultimate his and hers solution with an elfa® overhaul.

Master Bedroom

When Felicity, a freelance writer from Avalon, and her carpenter husband Andrew renovated their home they created an innovative wardrobe space tucked away behind a false wall between the bed and the ensuite. The challenge was finding the way to make best use of the space. At first, Felicity tried to create some order using portable racks. “It was a temporary solution, but not a very organised one,” she says. “I had trousers mixed with jumpers and T-shirts. We really needed an organised wardrobe, so we went looking for advice.”

INTRODUCING That’s where Howards stepped in with a practical elfa® wardrobe solution. “We have a lot of vertical space in our bedroom and the guys from Howards jumped on that storage opportunity immediately – it was amazing to watch,” says Felicity. elfa® is a flexible and versatile system, so Howards designed the space with both Felicity and Andrew in mind. With ventilated shelves, the wardrobe makeover features shoe drawers as well as a gliding trouser rack – a favourite with Felicity’s husband. But that wasn’t the only surprise in store for Andrew, who soon found clothes he hadn’t seen in months.

To maximise the hanging space, all of Andrew’s trousers were gathered together and hung on a gliding pant rack. “It holds 10 pairs of pants and they never slip off. It’s great. We also chose gorgeous wide shouldered flocked hangers for our jackets and coats,” she says. The new-look wardrobe has even provided Felicity with more inspiration to get organised and stay organised. “Now that everything is so ordered and beautiful, I really want it to stay that way, so we’ve bought great PVC covers that fit over our coats and special-occasion clothes to keep the dust off.” Felicity’s shoes and boots are also enjoying some well-deserved TLC. “I have a shoe library now, which is crazy – but the gliding shoe racks are a dream. They hold up to nine pairs per rack and my shoes are protected. No more squashed shoes and boots. We spend money on our shoes, so we need to take care of them. They’ll just last longer if you protect them.” Felicity was particularly impressed with the little touches Howards added to the makeover. “On the top shelf of our wardrobe, the Howards team added an ‘archive zone’ for all our odds and ends. It’s a whole series of Orla Kiely boxes, one for each child. They’re perfect for keepsakes. All the children’s sweet little notes and drawings have a home now.” When we asked Felicity to tell us about life after the makeover, she didn’t know where to begin. “It’s streamlined everything so

- Howards Hanger Expert f you’re looking for Australia’s largest range of hangers, you don’t need to look past Howards. Stocking a variety of styles and shapes, our range includes timber, felt, chrome plated, PVC coated and plastic hangers. You’ll also find a wide shoulder hotelstyle timber hanger as well as scarf and belt hangers in multiple finishes. Children haven’t been forgotten either – you can pick up some brightly coloured smaller hangers too. So why such a huge range? Do we really need different hangers taking up precious wardrobe space? Recently we caught up with Howards’ Senior Buyer for hangers, Jim Toby, who gave us a unique insight into the wonderful world of hangers. “It may seem excessive, but the truth

is, we spend a lot on our clothes and the way you hang them actually protects their shape and how long they’ll last – that’s why you need a different hanger for coats and jackets, trousers, t-shirts and dresses etc.” As for that perennial issue of wardrobe space, Jim explains, “A lot of our hangers, like the fine-flocked variety, are actually quite thin so they’re ideal space-savers and great for t-shirts. You can line up quite a few of them in your wardrobe without cramping your style – literally!”

Quality is so important, particularly with timber hangers. Clearly committed to style and substance, Jim makes ‘quality’ his top priority when sourcing hangers for Howards. For instance, all the felt hangers sit on strong resin frames rather than brittle plastic frames and the pvc-coating is a generous thickness making them durable and slip resistant. Jim adds, “Quality is so important, particularly with timber hangers. That’s why I only source A grade timbers such as Maple and Lotuswood. Did you know that

this kind of timber actually allows for more specialised design features like curved broad shoulders and notching? I always tell people you get what you pay for when it comes to hangers. So don’t be fooled by the cheaper variety – they’re often a mix of B or C grade timbers, they’re poorly made and can damage your clothes.” Jim is particularly excited by the new range of hangers in-store at Howards now. “We’ve just introduced a new coat and trouser hanger design with a timber clamp. We’ve also expanded our range of flocked hangers for adults and children and added five new designs of PVC-coated shirt and trouser hangers to our range. HOW TO DISPOSE OF YOUR UNWANTED WIRE HANGERS Loose wire hangers can get trapped in recycle machinery so if you’re throwing them out, make sure they’re folded up and placed inside a can or bundled together if you have a number of them. ecently, Howards cooked up a practical new pantry makeover for celebrity chef Miguel Maestre and his wife Sascha. After 3 months, we revisited to interview Sascha about how her pantry makeover is performing. How has the pantry stood up to the rigours of domestic life? Well it really has been amazing. Unbelievable actually. We’ve got more space, it looks great and the best part is having everything right in front of you. It’s been organised so well, meal preparation is faster… and we’re trying to be very good about putting everything back where it was – trying!

ARCHIVE STORAGE ZONE What are some of the products that offer real user-friendly storage solutions? Well, I absolutely love the OXO Pop airtight containers. They look good, you can label them – they’re pretty fabulous. I’m storing flour, rice and all my drystores in them. Food’s lasting longer now, which is great. An organised pantry is designed to help you cut down on waste and save money – but is there anything about the new-look pantry that you really love? I have a huge crush on the spice rack… it’s all eye level and in alphabetical order and the Marie Handled Baskets – I’m totally in love with

those. You can just pull them out and instantly see what’s in your pantry – even the stuff up the back. I don’t have things in the pantry that are three years old and more. And I don’t double up on things now when I go grocery shopping. I use the baskets in the fridge as well – can’t get enough of them. What are some of Miguel’s favourites? My husband loves his kitchen gadgets, but he’s become a little obsessed with the Flavia Vacuumsaver containers because they come with their own pumps and speed up marinating time. It’s a guy thing I think. Is there anything that’s surprised you about the makeover?

Yes! I like cleaning my pantry now! I have to admit before the makeover, I didn’t clean it out as much – it was such a hassle having to pull everything all out. But now I actually enjoy giving the shelves a quick wipe – it’s so much easier than before. Crazy isn’t it? Have you been giving friends and family the grand tour of your pantry? Absolutely. I’ve shown off the pantry so much and everybody loves it. I’ve even had a couple of friends who’ve gone out and bought exactly what I have, even the magnetic notice board on the back of the door. And my lovely sister is so jealous – can’t blame her, though.

It’s not just the big things, such as how your pantry functions, it’s also about how easy it is to find the tools you need in various drawers. To find out more, we spoke to Katrina from The Organised Housewife – one of our favourite blogs. She recently took on the challenge of her sister-in-law’s kitchen drawers – and the amazing results have to be seen to be believed. What was your top priority when re-organising the drawers? I just wanted to separate and organise all the utensils to make it easier for my sister-in-law to find what she needed straight away. There was actually a half-empty drawer that could’ve been put to better use – so that’s where I started. She was thrilled that I was organising the drawers – sometimes you just need somebody else’s opinion. What were some of the challenges you faced? Well, the size of her drawers were not typical, they were narrow and long – but I used that to my advantage by popping longer utensils in them like the BBQ tongs. Then I utilised all the space up the back of the drawers too – a spot that’s not often used – it’s surprisingly roomy! The madesmart® products from Howards were fantastic for separating utensils and creating a neater, tidier drawer.

How quickly were you able to re-organise the drawers? It only took me about 30 minutes. I emptied the drawers, gave them a quick wipe and then added the madesmart® containers that best fit in the drawers. I also did a lot of culling – which always helps when you’re reorganising a space. It doesn’t have to be a long, tedious process at all – and nowhere near as daunting as people may imagine. By the time you’ve baked a cake the tidying is done.
