It’s that time of year when everything starts changing. With each darkening day, the summer becomes more of a memory. When you live in the countryside you really feel the seasons change. You have to mentally prepare yourself for the darkness and cold (especially if you live in a house with no central heating as we do). The day the clocks went back last year we went to the beach. It was a beautiful warm, sunny day, the waves were rolling in, we had the beach to ourselves and we played in the sea for hours. It was one of those magical days. On the way back we were playing that Elbow song, you know the one with the words “One day like this a year would see me right”. And I suppose we’d just had that ‘one day’ that we needed to see us through winter and back into summer again. And when the dark and the cold seemed to be endless, I’d think about that day, and look forward to the arrival of spring. Looking back through the pictures of the catalogue shoot in Sweden, what comes out most of all is the great time everyone had. So those few magical days back in early summer should be more than enough to see the team through to next spring. Clare Hieatt

By the way, ‘super nice’ comes from the three Swedes who showed us around their wonderful country: Peter, Fredrik and Sebastian. It was a phrase they used a lot. Instead of something being really good, it was ‘super nice’.

Jeans for when you don’t want to wear jeans If you’ve been out on your bike, running in the rain or playing in the sea, you want to feel warm and dry. What you don’t want is to put on cold, stiff denim. That’s why we’ve designed a jeans that looks like a jeans but doesn’t really feel like a jeans when you wear it. The Warm 49ers have all the features that make our denim tough and strong. They are triple needle stitched on the inside and outside leg, they have bar tacks on the pockets to make them stronger, and they are made from our regular 12oz organic denim. But they also have a nice soft brushed organic cotton lining that feels just like your pyjamas when you were a kid. Perfect for wearing after sport.
Warm 49ers Loose fit. Four-pocket jeans. Button waistband and fly. Grown on waistband with back yoke detail. Two front hand pockets and two rear patch & button flap pockets. Belt loops. Triple needle stitched on the inside and outside leg. Fully lined with brushed check organic cotton. Wear after sport or just on a cold day. Indigo | 30, 32, 34, 36, 38 (regular and long) | Loose fit | 12oz organic denim | Brushed organic cotton lining | Machine wash | Made in China | Price £110

WHY WOOL IS COOL It’s sustainable. It’s biodegradable. It’s antibacterial. It’s chlorine free. All good things, by the way. But by far the biggest environmental impact of a garment comes from washing and ironing it. The great thing about a jumper is that you don’t wash them that often. And when you do, it has to be a hand wash. Which is a cool wash, which is cool too.

Nice is boring. Super Nice is strangely interesting. Nice is a stroll in the park. Super Nice is a ride through the forest. Nice is a ‘thank you’. Super Nice is a gift of home-made pepparkakor. Nice is neat and tidy. Super Nice is covered in mud. Nice is a pleasant chortle. Super Nice is laughing until you get cramp. So long, nice. Hello Super Nice.

SEARCH FOR THE PIPE
So the story is we heard about an amazing riding spot in the north of Sweden. An old disused forestry log flume which made a really long, perfectly formed steel half pipe. The kind of spot any skater or biker dreams

of finding. We just knew we had to go to Sweden to find it. So we packed up the old howies van with our boards (Jack forgot his) and bikes and enough food for a fortnight and left Cardigan Bay, heading east for the ferry port .
Years ago the log flume was originally used to float logs from way up in the forest, all the way down to Ume river. It is situated right next to the Power Station Museum, which contains 150-year-old fully-functioning frame
saws and a water mill. Since 2005 it has all been merely a tourist attraction, but after the boys gave it a thorough sweeping it turned out to be one of the best spots they had ever biked or skated. Super nice.

I don’t know what my carbon footprint is. But I do know that I make an effort to keep it small. Yet, only since we moved from the city and disconnected from mains gas (choosing to heat our house by wood alone) do I know the true metrics of what it takes to “stoke the boilers” in our house for just one year.
Man make fire. Man stay warm.
It breaks down like this: We burn 4 wheelbarrows of wood a week in the winter to heat our house and do most of the cooking. In the summer we would use just 1 wheelbarrow a week. Winter is 8 months, summer is 4.
01239 614 122 We have 2 log storage compartments in the woodshed that each take 2 trailer-loads of logs to fill. Each trailer is about 1 tonne of wood. Each compartment lasts about 1 month, so it holds about 16 wheelbarrows.
In terms of volume, one of our storage compartments can hold about two whole 35-year-old ash trees, including the trunk and all the branches that measure up to 20mm in diameter. In a year we use about 5 or 6 trees. I know that to fell 1 tree, limb it, move it, split it and stack it, is 1 day’s work on my own.
This will consume about ¼ of a litre of 2-stroke and half of that in chain oil for the chainsaw. I consume approx. 6 cups of tea and 2 litres of water on the job. The limbing and splitting is done by axe. We need to split and dry all the wood in advance so that we get full energy from the burn and don’t end up drying the wood on the fire.
Trees take longer to grow than 35 firewood does to season, so deciding what to cut down and planning replanting needs a lot of consideration.
Indeed, an ash tree takes 1 year to dry enough to burn hot. A sycamore takes 6 months. Hazel and Hawthorne 1 year, oak and beech take upto 2 years or more and rescued driftwood from the river takes 2 months to dry under an airy tarpaulin.
Yet by leaving the comfort zone and disconnecting from the mains, the inconvenience, effort, planning and physical preparation I now have to go through has actually reconnected me with exactly what it takes to sustain just me and my little family.
These days, every household has power, heat and water on demand. It wouldn’t be far from the truth to say that most of us probably take it a bit for granted.

They’ll even take the shirt off your back This product is a man’s overshirt. However, when we were in Sweden, every time we wanted to take a picture of it on a man, we could never find it. That’s because it was constantly being ‘borrowed’ by the women on the shoot. They loved the fact that it was big and cosy. They loved the soft quilted lining and the warm recycled wool outer. They wore it over base layers at breakfast, they warmed up in it after lake jumping, and they chilled out in it around the campfire at night. So even though we have very little photographic evidence, you’ll just have to take our word for it. It does look good on a man.

THE THINKING BEHIND THE HAND-ME-DOWN PROJECT
We live in interesting times We live in times of limited resources but unlimited desire to consume them. The answer though is real simple: to consume less as a consumer; to make a better designed product as a manufacturer. Going forward we will have to take more responsibility for our consumption. The manufacturer and the consumer will both have to share that responsibility. From where we stand as a manufacturer, a product that keeps working for longer uses less resources in the end. The key ingredients to this are quality and good design. To make something well, you know, the best you can do, means going that extra mile. Every stitch, every zip, every little feature considered. The weakest points made strong. Then, and only then, can we say that we have fully understood the responsibility of making something. Hand-Me-Down Contract This product is guaranteed for a minimum of 10 years from the date of original purchase. The chances are it will last a good deal longer than that. So now you have to decide whom you’d like to hand this product down to. Err‌

I am 27. Jacob is 27. I ride BMX, so does Jacob. But that is where the similarities end, as I was born in England and Jacob was born in Sweden. My local spot was a concrete abnormality where I learned the tricks I saw in all the magazines. Jacob’s local spot was a perfect bank, transitioned at the bottom where he learned all the tricks he could think of, the bank was the side of a cliff. This is probably the reason that he has an ability of looking at everything in a completely different way to myself and all the people I grew up riding with. Nature is just a part of his life and just like every single one of his fellow country folk they just seem to be so in tune with it. If Mother Nature herself walked into a bar she’d give us all a hug I’m sure, just before she wandered over to the outside bar and high-fived all the Swedes before buying them a round, which they would definitely buy back. I’ve been doing my best to integrate walks in the park, runs on the cliffs, cycling through the woods but I feel strangely alien, like I’m trying too hard. It’s not natural to my sort, my lungs are too full of West Midlands smog and although I love the outdoors I just know it’s going to take me a lifetime of being Swedish to refine that look in my eyes when I see nature do something amazing. No matter how hard I try it’s just not there. Yet Jacob and all the rest of them do it perfectly, just take a look at a sunset and look into the eyes of a Swede as they say “Sverige år fantastiskt” and that is why they get the high-fives. They are right too, Sverige certainly is ‘fantastiskt’. Matthew J Adams

YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOOK LIKE YOU DO SPORTS TO DO SPORTS At howies we have people who ride to work, we have people who go for a skate at lunch time and we have people who go for a run at the end of the day (often followed by a quick half in the pub). Whatever they do for kicks, they all have something in common. They have learnt to love Merino. You see it has such great moisture wicking and temperature regulating properties that it out performs a lot of ‘sports’ tops on the market. And, particularly if they are wearing a top like our new ribbed Henley, they can get back to work or pop into the pub without looking (or smelling) like a sports geek.

Find your inner Sven. 53
The Swedes make great explorers. Their long dark winters might well be the reason. Växjö in the south got just 22 minutes of sunlight a couple of Decembers back. Phew. Enough to make even die-hards pack their bags. One of Sweden’s finest explorers was Sven Hedin. Back in the early 1900s he discovered the Trans Himalayan mountain range (crossing it eight times, once disguised as a Buddhist pilgrim), unearthed parts of the Great Wall of China and located the sources of Asia’s biggest rivers. He was also an accomplished photographer, geographer and illustrator – meticulously recording everything from mountain heights to native plant strains and animal species. On one expedition he even measured the dimensions of all his camels.
Even today his notes (there are, appropriately, mountains of them) help interpret satellite images of central Asia. But his motivation wasn’t cash or fame (although in 1977 Volkswagen did name a camper van after him). It was that nobody had ever set eyes on these places before. The vast blank spaces on the map marked ‘unexplored’ were just waiting to be filled-in. So what’s left for the Sven Hedins of tomorrow? Well, and this is oddly comforting, there’s actually quite a bit. Vast African deserts, Congolese jungles and swamps, polar islands and plenty of unclimbed mountains – Tibet’s Gangkhar Puensum possibly being the highest. So if this winter starts getting you down, maybe you should go and do a bit of exploring yourself. Chris Boddy

Waffler mid-layer Wear over a base layer as a mid-layer when the weather is cold or as an autumnal top layer. Half-zip, honeycomb construction, which has high breathability but also traps your body heat. Zque accredited Merino. Great for sports like snowboarding, biking, walking or running. Works even better when used in a layering system with an NBL underneath. Graphite/sunflower | S, M, L, XL | Athletic fit | 100% Merino wool | Machine wash | Made in Fiji | Price ÂŁ90

THE WAFFLER IS UP FOR ANYTHING The Waffler is extremely versatile. It’s a mid-layer. Because it’s not bulky it’s perfect for wearing over a base layer and underneath a jacket when you need extra warmth. It’s a top layer. Because the fabric has a 3D waffle construction that traps heat around your body like an invisible thermal blanket it’s warm enough to be worn like a fleece. It’s a sports top. Because it’s made from the finest Merino wool it will keep breathing and wick away moisture so it’s also great for being active.

MAKE SOMETHING SO GOOD THAT YOU WANT TO TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT IT www.howies.co.uk
Our base layers cost more than our competitors’. We don’t pay top riders to wear them. Nor do we have any money to spend to advertise them. We can’t afford to put them in a box. Nope, we got none of that. You see, we put all the money into making a better product. That’s why we are able to buy the highest quality 18.5 micron New Zealand Merino (a human hair is 80 microns). But not all Merino is the same. Just like wine, just like bikes, quality can vary. You have to know your stuff. Thankfully, we have the toughest selection process known to man and sheep. Indeed, we are one of only a handful of companies in the world to use Mapp endorsed Merino. A guarantee of source, process and functionality. All this costs money. But for product, we can find the money. Because when you make something better than the other guys, people talk.

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT I think it's pretty fair to say that most bike styles are pretty, well, vulgar. At one end of the scale you've got the classic crackhugging spandex, and at the (very) far end you've got the downhill riders (myself included) in our garish, over-built race pants. I think a good gauge of riding kit is if you'd feel good just walking down the street in it. I was pretty happy to see a pair of shorts that finally ticked some boxes. The shorts from howies are a comfortable fit in that they are loose, but not flapping around all over the place so they don't get caught on my shifter, but they certainly aren't Lycra either. They are just a nice, neutral looking short that I'd be perfectly happy walking down the street in or chilling by the lake, yet splash proof and tough enough to be worn out on the mountain. It even has something else that's always missing from mountain bike shorts: a pocket. Sounds little but you always need somewhere for your lift pass and a bit of cash. James McKnight – MTB team

THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IS EVERYTHING Here are some things about our jeans that are important to us: All our denim is organic. We do not use enzyme washes, instead our jeans are washed in water with rubber balls called eco-balls. We triple stitch critical seams. Our belt loops are set underneath the waistband for extra strength. We don’t use rivets because they hurt when you fall of your skateboard or bike. We use re-inforced bar tacks to strengthen critical areas. Hem and leg seams are chain stitched – a distinctive yarn roping effect which is enhanced with age. We use undyed organic cotton for our pocket bags (bleaching cotton weakens it). The back pocket stitching is a map of our coastline, the river Teifi, and the dot is Cardigan town, the home of howies. Our complete range of men’s and women’s jeans are available on our website and in our shops.

Snowboarding to me is not just a sport, it’s a way of life. There is nothing more exhilarating than riding down a mountain at speed. The adrenalin rush is amazing, whether it be riding at speed, hitting a kicker or mastering the technicality of the halfpipe, the feeling is amazing. I love the people involved in snowboarding. It is like no other sport. Despite the fact that we enter competitions to compete against each other we are all stoked when someone is riding well. When I managed to get through to my first World Cup final, there was a massive cheer from the rest of the competitors. That’s a great feeling. The mountains also make a magnificent backdrop for the sport. There is never a morning when you feel like staying in bed. If it was not for the weather and having to give my body a rest, I would ride every day. Ben Kilner Ben is the British Halfpipe Champion and in February 2010 will represent Great Britain in the Vancouver Olympic snowboarding events.

WARM JEANS These jeans are for the days when even your favourite jeans don’t feel right. They are for those crisp, cold days that call you outside. They are for putting on after you have got soaked through to the skin. They are great armchair-curling, book-reading jeans. They are log-chopping jeans. They are beach-walking jeans. They are bread-making jeans. They look like jeans, but secretly they are pyjamas (just check out the lining). They have the same effect as hot Ribena. They are perfect winter jeans.

EPIC COTTON IS QUITE SOMETHING Despite looking and feeling like regular cotton, Epic behaves just like a performance fabric, meaning it’s comfortable to wear but also functions when you need it to. It’s windproof, rainproof and, unlike other hard shells, maintains breathability thanks to an encapsulation process that treats every fibre. It also keeps its water-resistance when put through the wash.

Sometimes you go to another country, and it looks like everything’s upside-down. But as you get to know more, you wonder if maybe they’re the right way up – and it’s the rest of us who are topsy-turvy. Sweden’s famous for its high taxes. Most Swedes pay between 49% and 60% of their salary in tax.* It’s the second-highest tax burden in the world. So why are they so cheerful? 91% of them say they’re happy, which puts them current equal second on the world happiness scale. The UK comes in at number nine.** To many Brits, this looks like a contradiction. How can Swedes be worse off than us, and still be happier? The answer is, of course, that they’re not worse off. They just have a different attitude to tax.
The Swedes have a very neighbourly, cooperative outlook. Instead of the state being something that just siphons off your cash, they see it as a protective roof over everyone’s head. Paying taxes just means chipping in to pay for timber and nails and slates for the roof. To Swedes, high taxes mean free schools (and school lunches). Free healthcare. Incredible maternity and paternity leave (new parents get a combined leave of 480 days, most of it at virtually full pay). Generous state pensions, child allowance and unemployment benefits. Nice, eh? So could it be that higher taxes are actually a good thing? Well, at least it’s got us thinking. Mike Reed

PRE-LOVED This garment is made from recycled polyester fibres. In a previous life it might have been a fleece, a t-shirt, or even a bottle. Maybe for another brand. For another use. In another country. Bought by another person. Who knows? The old garment was ground down, de-coloured, converted into polyester polymers, spun back into fibre and then made into this new garment. Now it has been given another life. A sort of reincarnation, if you like. A chance to go do ‘stuff’ again.

SOME WORDS ABOUT THE TAITH LEGGINGS For a few seasons now the sports kit has been a bit thin on the ground from howies. So for Winter we’ve added a few goodies to the range. One of these is something that I have been passionate about for some time. It doesn’t matter what sports you do, leggings are an essential bit of kit. I use them for running, cycling, rowing and kayaking. The ones I have owned before are from a well-known brand. They are the best I have found but they annoy me. They are made from man-made fibres, they get cold when they’re wet, they smell after a few wears, they dig in on the waistband and below the knee and generally feel uncomfortable. And as soon as I’ve finished exercise I take them off. This led me to want to design some Merino leggings. Seeing as we all love our Merino tops, why can’t we have Merino bottoms too?
However, Merino is a very soft fabric so it had to withstand a lot of bending of knees (no baggy knee syndrome allowed), it had to put up with some abrasion and it had to fit the body without being uncomfortable. So I came up with the Taith leggings. Taith means ‘journey’ or ‘tour’ in Welsh – something you will come across a lot when out on your bike or running in the beautiful Welsh countryside. I have been testing them for a while now, from original prototype to the size set, which had all the alterations and they are brilliant. Exactly, if not more than, what I wanted. The waistband doesn’t dig in, it’s high enough to keep everything warm, they are a midthigh length so they don’t cut under your knee, they don’t get baggy knees and they feel like you’re not wearing anything. Lisa was out running in Tenby and said “I felt like I was bottom half naked”.
One night, after a run along the coast path, I got in, made food, curled up with the dog on the sofa and completely forgot to take them off. They were so comfy, warm, dry and non smelly I forgot I was wearing kit. It’s a great feeling to be able to design and make something you really want and know that all those little annoyances won’t bother you anymore because you’ve solved the problem. I love them and I wanted to share all this with you because I think you will love them too. And let’s face it, it’s hard trying to find good kit that feels and looks great too. I’m going to stock up and I hope you do too as I want them to be a howies product for years to come. Mel Lang (she designed them)

It led us to thinking, Sweden is full of such characters and people who share Bengt’s ‘fix things’ philosophy. And we found Sweden to be a richer place for it. Thanks for helping us Bengt.
This is Bengt. One super nice Swede. He invited us into his home and fixed Jon’s bike. Bengt is a fixer of everything, particularly old bikes. You name it, Bengt can mend it. His shed is an amazing place. With all the tools a fixer needs. A nut for every bolt, a bolt for every nut. Full of bikes and mad contraptions. Never seen anything like it. Crazy.

Why do kids love our Merino? Is it because it is made from the finest fibres that don’t itch? Is it because it regulates their body temperature? Is it because they can wear it for days without it getting smelly? Is it because they can stay outside playing without getting cold? Is it because it can double up as pyjamas? Is it because it’s stripey? Is it because it looks cool with boots and skirts? Is it because they can put their pants on over the top and pretend they’re a superhero? With kids, you never know.

129 As my cycle journey around the coast of Britain over the Summer has progressed, there is a question that people ask a lot “what’s the best place that you have visited?”. I would say that our coastline is amazing and it’s hard to pick a single place. What is easy though is a favourite time of day. There is an hour or so in the evening that is magical. The time before sunset, when things calm down, the wind drops, less cars. The skies are amazing and often the low sun will pick out and light a single building on the horizon or throw huge shadows across the fields. It’s a great time to ride: on Anglesey you are alone on the ancient hills, in Cumbria the hedgerows come alive with birds, the west coast of Scotland has vast dramatic sunsets, and in Norfolk and Suffolk the huge skies light the rich and vast farmlands. Now the days are shorter and darkness arrives a bit sooner, so there is more of an urgency to find a place to camp or a bed for the night. But if things work out I can drift into a coastal campsite with supper in a pannier with just enough light to grab a quick shower and cook a bit of food. That’s a perfect evening. Nick Hand

How one dog could change the whole pet food industry.
131
01239 614 122
I want my dog to eat proper, decent food, something that I would not mind serving up every day and wouldn’t have to hold at arms’ length. Something that would look lovely in my kitchen cupboard and didn’t feel that it needed to be segregated into its own ‘pet food’ cupboard where all the hanging out tongues on the front of the packages could hang out together. After my dog just refused to eat any food I bought for her, I decided I needed to take the matter into my own hands and cook her up some yummy food that she couldn’t possibly resist. And that’s how it all started... I needed a delicious food in a handy – recyclable – container that I would love feeding her every day. Humans love caring for and nurturing their best friends and feeding her something that she so obviously enjoys was an important part of our relationship. The Pet Food industry is a huge, faceless industry run by four major FMCG’s. It’s on a massive 4 million cansan-hour scale. It’s an industry that runs its spreadsheets to 4 decimal points as each 10th of a penny makes a big difference to the profit margin. It’s worth knowing that an aluminium tin bought straight from the aluminium maker costs 15p. The biggest selling pet food in the UK retails for 57p a tin – running the numbers back, this would equate to around 3p of ingredients per tin. Not very appetising. Looking down the biscuit aisle or the ice cream counter and gazing at all the amazing ingredients we are now so conversant in – spelt flour, cardomum, organic lemon oil, lavender flowers makes you realise how far we’ve come from Raspberry Ripple and Neapolitan flavours. The food industry in general in the UK has transformed beyond recognition from where we were, say just 5 years ago. But the pet food industry has been stuck in a timewarp where price has been the one and only driver. As consumers we have been drummed into asking, ‘Where’s the discount?’. Drive through any town and see how many signs you find for ‘Discount Pet Foods Sold Here’.
How have we, a nation of pet lovers, got to the stage where we are on a mission to feed our best friends the cheapest food available, without questioning how is it possible to make something remotely nutritious for a few pence? As well as the conversation around ingredients, there’s also the eco angle: pet food packaging is one of the biggest landfill offenders. Obsession with convenience has led to many pet foods now being sold in pouches – which will never breakdown – three layers of reinforced foil and plastic that withstand the cooking process at very high temperatures are not designed to breakdown, even after hundreds of years. Even those large bags of dry food are made from plastics that are not recyclable. It’s time to really look at what goes into pet food. How have we been so gullible! I fed Lily for a long time on a variety of mass produced food without ever questioning the juicy pictures of plump vegetables, gravy and succulent pieces of meat on the label. It was only when she went on hunger strike that I really took the time to see what was behind the label. After 18 months of bad skin, itchy ears and general listlessness, I talked to my brother – a vet – and decided I had to do something about this. There must be people out there who would be happy to buy a proper meal for their pet! A cappuccino sets me back £2.70 – more than a day’s worth of yummy food for my dog. We turned the paradigm around by asking – ‘How good can we make this’ not, ‘How cheap can we make this’. We added lots of vegetables, fruit, a dozen herbs and lots of good meat into each recipe and set out our stall. Being a pet food evangelist has spread from Lily and I, to our customers…! We have so many emotional emails from them to say how thankful they are. I just need to bring my teenage daughter round – she still finds it hard to tell her friends what her Mum does for a living: “Mum – I CAN’T tell them you make pet food”! the most inspiring and abundant event I have ever attended... truly excellent... a genius of place... great job, great lectures, a very special thing going on there in West Wales... the location, the hosting, the food, attendees, the speakers blended together to form a magical mix... I loved the Do Lectures, I really mean I fell in love with them... you gave me the greatest experience and I will remember it forever... the most inspiring conference event thing (which it clearly isn’t) that I’ve taken part in... a double shot of fresh air for my brain... like putting a hell of a lot of interesting, clever, funny, sparky people in a blender, in a field... a cross between The Burning Man, Ted Lectures and Where The Wild Things Are... a place of storytelling, a place of inspiration... I jumped in a river with some of the smartest, kindest, friendliest people on the planet... the meals taught us that food is not a thing but a relationship... I laughed. I laughed a lot... fuel for the soul... revolutions can start in that pub... a melting pot of people and ideas... people will get sick of me going on about how great it was... and fforest, well it gives it something so magical which feels key to the vibe and openness... thanks for a wonderful, amazing and unique event... damn that food was good... I leave alive, Diolch.
