Research Project Proposal Fall 2014-2015 Jennifer Hoying Fashion Design 2017 During WWII, fashion was set on the back burner due to preoccupation with war and shortages of fabric and notions. All supplies were used for military purposes so couture was obviously not a priority. After the war had ended, Parisian designers wanted to dive right back into design but unfortunately there were still shortages of fabric. They came up with a very creative solution, which they called Theatre de la Mode. It was a traveling fashion exhibition, where they created third scale dolls to showcase their new works. My goal for the semester is to collaborate with my teacher George Sarofeen and local artist Samuel Baiera to create our modern take on the Theatre de la Mode. George will supervise and offer his help in any way possible. I will be responsible for the concept, design of the garments and dolls and fabrication of these third scale dolls. Sam will be responsible for set design and fabrication. My aim is to create something to be displayed in DAAP, a gallery or even a museum. There will be 8-10 looks/dolls, depending on cost/efficiency/final design. The possibilities are truly endless with this project and I am excited to see where we end up. INSPIRATION
This is the story of the Jade Phoenix. It’s 2215 and our world has long been plagued with destruction, famine and war. It’s nothing like the world we know—it’s a place born only of our nightmares. Humans no longer roam the Earth. The rivers have dried up, the forests have burned, the soil has long lost its ability to sustain true life. Long before Jade’s time, our world was invaded by the Arthropodians who obliterated the human population and replaced it with their own. These creatures came from beyond— they are like nothing we have ever known and have taken Earth as their own. Their Queen is an unforgiving one—she kills for pleasure, she pillages for joy. No human force has ever come close to stopping her. Until Jade. Jade Wong is the last surviving royal from the Wong dynasty. She comes from a rare family of power and wealth but do not be fooled-- there is much more to her than her silken black hair and stunning beauty. She is a warrior, a survivor, a renegade. She refuses to accept the Arthropodian reign and leads a quiet revolution against the Queen. However, she is a mere human; she cannot fight forever. On a fateful day in the dead of summer, Jade encounters not just an Arthropodian army but the Queen’s personal squad. She gives the fight of her life, killing all of the Queen’s decorated soldiers with her unforgiving Jade sword. The scent of the fallen’s blood fills the air and draws the Queen to the kill zone. There is a stand off; it lasts only a few minutes and ends with Jade defiantly daring the Queen to take her life. She does. This is the story of how Jade, the last hope for humans, refuses to succumb to evil. This is the story of how Jade, the shining light of our world, vehemently denies life ending with death. This is the story of how Jade, the chosen one, defies all odds and returns to Earth as the destroyer of the Arthopodians. She is Jade; She is a phoenix, rising from the ashes to save what’s left of her home, her people. She is risen, she has come.
