Over 11 Million Cosmetic Procedures Performed in 2013: ASAPS The demand for cosmetic procedures continues to increase with more and more men and women opting to go under the knife to improve their looks. New technologies and techniques are allowing plastic surgeons to meet the most discerning goals safely and efficiently. Statistics released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) provide clear evidence of the popularity of plastic surgery. ASAPS reports that more than 11 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures were performed in the U.S. in 2013, a 6.5% increase from 2012. Here are some of the highlights of this ASAPS report: • Surgical procedures accounted for about 16.5% of the total number of procedures in 2013 • Non-surgical procedures made up 83.5% of the total number of procedures last year • Surgical procedures accounted for about 58% of the total expenditures • Non-surgical procedures made up 42% of total expenditures

The total number of cosmetic surgical procedures increased by 1.9 million during 2012-2013 Total non-surgical procedures saw a 13% increase during 2012-2013 with 9.5 million procedures Liposuction was the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure performed last year followed by breast augmentation Botulinum Toxin tops the list of non-surgical procedures followed by Hyaluronic Acid Buttock augmentation marked the most significant growth over the course of the one-year period The figures for overall injectables showed a 21% increase from 2012 There was a 279% increase in the total number of cosmetic procedures over the period 1997-2013l. This includes an 89% increase in surgical procedures and a 521% increase in non-surgical procedures People age 35-50 underwent the most number of procedures in 2013, with over 4.7 million treatments which formed 42% of the total. 57% of the total cosmetic surgeries were performed in office facilities and 28% in free-standing surgical centers In 2013, women had more than 10.3 million cosmetic procedures which was 90.6% of the total and men had 1 million cosmetic procedures which comprised 9.4% of the total Americans spent more than $12 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2013

In addition to new treatments and formulas designed to make people look younger and more physically attractive, the rise in demand for cosmetic treatments is also driven by the desire to mimic celebrities, and to improve job prospects and social relationships. The number of women going in for reconstruction after breast cancer treatment has also increased. Plastic surgeons have also reported that the selfie trend is driving the demand for aesthetic procedures such as nose surgery, eyelid surgery and facelifts.
