Fall Sports Guide 2010: On a wing & a prayer C SPORTS Steve Hanf ■■■
hoosing the cover subjects for our annual preview sections always involves a great deal of thought. With 15 schools to cover, talented athletes and intriguing storylines abound. Somehow, it always seems to fall into place. While there are plenty of talented players out there in every sport, one of football’s best seniors is Southwest Guilford’s Airyn Willis. And it just didn’t seem right not to
welcome High Point Christian Academy to the varsity with one of its top players in junior Colby Grant. Once the cover subjects were chosen, the idea of what to call this section was simply your friends in the sports department having a little fun with the English language. The phrase “on a wing and a prayer” is widely thought to have originated during World War II, made famous in a song about a plane
limping home after a bombing run. For our purposes, the wing is Willis and the new Southwest offense not built specifically for him, but certainly suited for his speed and athleticism. As for the prayer part, well, that was easy given High Point Christian Academy’s focus on offering a high-level athletic department that focuses on still-higherlevel goals off the field. There’s no truth to the rumor
that the Enterprise put this section together “on a wing and a prayer,” limping home to deadline! It certainly proved to be a labor of love with three sportswriters and two photographers, and we’re grateful to all the area athletic directors and coaches who helped us land this project at your doorstep once again. Enjoy! shanf@hpe.com | 888-3526

Southwest ready to light up the scoreboard BY STEVE HANF ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER
HIGH POINT – Airyn Willis made quite a splash in the offseason by landing a scholarship offer from Georgia Tech. So even if Southwest Guilford wanted to disguise its plans for the upcoming season, there really wouldn’t be much point. “We’re not hiding what we want to do. We’re trying to get Airyn Willis the football,” said fourth-year Cowboys coach Scott Schwarzer. “He’s got a chance be a thousand-thousand guy – running and throwing – and we know teams are going to try to take him away from us.” The 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior speedster found the end zone 11 times last year while splitting time at running back, receiver and even QB. But when coaches decided in the offseason to run a spread-op-

tion offense, they knew who their quarterback would be – even before he committed to Georgia Tech, which runs the same offense. “He came to me in the spring and said, ‘Coach, I want to play quarterback,’ and he has a chance to go down there and play quarterback,” Schwarzer said. “We’ve had more fun as a coaching staff putting it in. Chris Shoffner, our new offensive coordinator, he understands it. We’ve had our ups and downs with it. We’re never going to be as effective as a team that’s run it for years and years, but we’re getting there.” There’s a lot to like about an offense that starts by putting the ball in Willis’ hands each snap. Or in the hands of talented backup QBs DeMario Smith and Herbert Bridges, both of whom have excelled in the new offense. Once the quarterback gets on the move, the options abound. Raymond Bridges, Herbert
Bridges, Larry Edwards and Aaron Fletcher will get plenty of opportunities in the running game along with J.J. Garrison, Caleb Crosby and Braxton Daye. Talented receivers include Jarvis Dow, Micah McMaster and Lateef DeGroat as the Cowboys will look to pass sparingly but hit for big plays when they do. “The type kids we have, those little guys who can move, we’ve got the horses,” Schwarzer said. “Our biggest problem right now is depth on the offensive line.” Four starters return up front in Anson Robinson, Ryan Bristow, Kevin Stanfield and Bryan Hatchell, but Robinson could be out for the year due to illness. Others in the mix this fall include Quin Peeler, Zack Lowers, Brandon Banks and Tristan Cheviron. Several of those players will see

time on defense, which returns five starters from a unit that struggled at times. Southwest, after winning its first three games, lost seven straight in a 4-7 campaign that included just one win in the Piedmont Triad 4A Conference. The defense allowed 21.5 points per game and the offense managed just 13.8. Raymond Bridges, who Schwarzer said could be an all-conference performer on both sides of the ball, returns in a strong secondary. He’ll play free safety along with DeGroat, Princeton Brown and even Willis when needed. The Bridges also will play some corner along with Robert Howze. Banks is a college prospect and returns to lead the way up front at one of the ends. Others along the line will include Peeler, Willie Morris, James Rogers, Lowers, Stanfield, Bristow and Andrew Manson. John Gehris, a three-year starter who Schwarzer called “arguably one of the best players I’ve ever coached,” leads the way at inside linebacker after playing OLB last fall. Joining him on the inside will be Fields and Kevin Ngongo, while outside linebackers will be Fletcher, Daye, Gerquan McLaurin and Jarvis Davis. “The key on defense will be for us to be a ‘bend-don’t-break’ defense,” Schwarzer said. “We cannot give up big plays – we were the worst third-down-and-long team in the country last year. We know we’re going to give up some yardage. We just can’t give up big plays.” Tanner Butler returns from last season in the kicking game, while Macaulay Rivas and McMaster are also getting in some work. Special teams will be just as important as the offense’s development and the defense’s improved toughness as Southwest tries to make strides this season after several close defeats a year ago. “We’ve got to find a way to win the ones we’re not supposed to win, and early success is important,” Schwarzer said. “Three years in a row with Andrews we’ve been right there, Ragsdale two of the last three years, Glenn was close two years in a row. We’ve just got to find a way to turn the corner. The culture has started to change here.”

Bison headliners are back in the spotlight BY STEVE HANF ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER
HIGH POINT – The offensive stars return. The defensive stars return. Are the stars aligned for High Point Central’s football team to make some noise in November and December? “We’ve had a chance to develop these guys for three, four years,” said fourth-year Bison head coach Wayne Jones. “The expectations for them are going to be high. We expect them to compete for a conference championship and go deep in the playoffs, and each of them have the ultimate goal to compete for a state championship.” Last year’s squad finished 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the brutal Piedmont Triad 4A Conference. The Bison avenged a 14-7 regular-season

loss to Glenn with a 14-13 win in the opening round of the 4A playoffs, then fell 21-6 to powerful Dudley in the second round. That run came on the heels of a 6-6 mark two years ago and 3-8 record in Jones’ debut year. “We’ve improved three wins each year,” Jones remarked. “If we improve by three again this year, that will speak highly of the kids and the coaching staff.” It could happen, despite a challenging schedule that begins tonight with a trip to R.J. Reynolds. Quarterback Drew Adams and receiver Derek Grant return for senior years in which they’ll continue being recruited by college coaches at various levels. Running back Lashuran Monk is back after a breakout sophomore season in which he led the team in rush-
ing. Toss in three full-time starters back from the offensive line, and you’ve got to like Central’s chances of scoring some points out of its spread option attack. “We’re not real big, so we’ll make sure we get the ball on the perimeter to athletes in space, try to chip away at people,” Jones said. “We’re definitely excited about having those guys. Sean (Monk) is one of those guys, you get him to the open field, he can cause trouble. Derek does a great job catching the football – I’d like to see him be more of a game-changer this year. Drew does a good job operating the offense. I’m looking forward to Drew spreading the ball out and trying to make them defend five people.” Adams slumped a bit last year

HIGH POINT CENTRAL FALL SPORTS SCHEDULE
---
Coach: Kim Stalnaker (sixth season for girls golf, 12th season coaching the boys). Last year in review: Girls finished fourth in Piedmont Triad Conference. Breana Boyd was All-PTC as a senior and advanced to the 4A state championship as an individual qualifier and finished 37th overall. Key returners: Mari Norcross (senior), Madeline Rhoten (senior), Kate Mann (senior), Laura Galanti (senior who injured knee during the summer) and freshman Jennifer Galanti. The coach says: “No superstars here, just a great group of International Baccalaureate scholar-athletes that hope to have some fun and improve as golfers and competitors. This team is actually any coach’s dream. Once again, I won’t have to worry about discipline problems or grades. We hope to relax, have fun and enjoy the great fall golf courses and the nice fall weather and possibly improve our games. We need to encourage our underclass women to come out and try this game of golf; otherwise, we may lose our Lady Bison golf team next year!”

with 1,177 yards in the regular season to go with 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions, but the smart senior – No. 1 in his class – will be getting looks from Football Championship Subdivision schools, Jones said. Grant, the 6-foot-3, 200-pound receiver, also is hearing from those colleges as well as D-Is. Another talented receiver in the mix is JV call-up Justin Johnson. Monk catches the ball well out of the backfield and will get plenty of touches along with offensive reserves such as Tyreek Sparks and Jacorey Davis. The line will be anchored by right tackle Vince Carrono, right guard Thomas Primus and left guard Anderson Spencer. That trio started all last year, while center Taylor Oots played a major role last fall due to injury. Oots and Jawan Hilton are fighting for the center spot, with newcomer Greg Aiken and former defensive player Sean Myers also filling in on what so far is a solid but thin line.

For all the talent that returns on offense, Jones said the defense was ahead of that unit in early practices. That’s because three linemen and two outside linebackers return in starting roles, led by East Carolina commit Jonathan White. The 6-4, 270-pound White is expected to “be a dominating force out there,” Jones said. “We want him to play hard every down, every series, demand that people are going to have to double-team you. We want him to disrupt the ball in the backfield, get in throwing lanes, just cause trouble.” Should White command those double-teams, look out: At the other defensive end spot, the 6-3, 245-pound Merritt Blanks – MVP of the line last year – lies in wait along with fellow lineman Myers (6-4, 260): “They give us a good front on the defense,” Jones said. Aaron Leach and Brian Primus return at outside linebacker, with varsity backup Robert McCauley likely the third piece of that puzzle. Central’s talented secondary last year – an interception waiting to happen on every passing play – only returns Sparks at strong safety, but Jones likes how the secondary looks with Davis, Monk and Travis Dillard rotating into the corner and safety spots.

Coach: Kim Foust (fourth year) Last year in review: Last year was a difficult year for volleyball at Central. When we took over the program three years ago, the volleyball team had only won a single match the previous season. Through hard work we have increased participation and increased wins to five last year. We had one all-conference player (Jenny Lindh). One of our key wins was senior night against Glenn (31), which was the second year in a row we won the senior night game. While we were improved, we still were not where we wanted to be.

Run game key in Raiders’ run to playoffs BY STEVE HANF ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER
HIGH POINT – The date of the 2AA championship game is prominently displayed on the bulletin board in the T. Wingate Andrews football office. To make a run to that magical Saturday in December, the Red Raiders will have to run the ball and not get run over on defense. “To be successful we have got to stop the run – we didn’t stop the run at all last year,” said fourthyear Raiders coach Rodney McKoy. “And we have to be able to run the ball. We’ve made changes to get into more running situations.” Andrews capped the 2009 season with a 7-5 record and 4-1 mark in

the Piedmont Athletic 2A Conference. Some of those wins came in contests in which the Raiders never did stop the run, but simply outscored the opposition. Some of the losses included crushing penalties and lapse after lapse in defending the run. “We cleared up some issues we had with kids doing the right things,” McKoy said. “That’s important to me for kids to act the right way inside the building and outside the building, and we addressed some issues on work habits. I think the product will be a little bit different from what it’s been.” For starters, McKoy himself is moving from the offensive side to the defense. But he didn’t leave the cupboard bare for those in charge
of the offense. One of the area’s leading passers in Marquez Swinton, the leading receiver in Mark Johnson, and strong running back Xavier Quick all return. Swinton, despite being only a junior, has started 21 straight games since bursting onto the scene as a freshman when an injury had the Red Raiders in need of help. Last year, Swinton threw for 1,539 yards. Johnson, a senior, was his favorite target with 44 catches for 790 yards and eight touchdowns. The only negative was how many times the duo failed to connect: Swinton was plagued with 14 interceptions last fall to go with just 13 TDs. “This is the year for his experi-

ence to show,” McKoy said of Swinton. “He played really good as a freshman, played decent as a sophomore, but had too many interceptions that put him and the defense in a bad situation. I think he’s going to iron out some of those youthful mistakes, and by us running the ball equally, teams will have to stop that as well.” Quick will help there. The senior enjoyed several strong games early in the year before suffering an injury, and a revolving door at running back ensued. This season, Quick will be joined by Southwest Guilford transfer Derrick Graham and former JV standout Rodderick Campbell, plus returning fullback Antonio Watts, as the squad shifts from the spread attack to a more multiple look. And while more focus will be put on the run game, Swinton still will be able to find reliable receivers in Johnson, second-year starter Ryan Bostic, and young talents Eli Mason and Davie Wade. The offensive line returns Antonio Jackson at left tackle and Jalen Turner at right guard. Inexperienced players who McKoy likes nevertheless because of their good size up front include Teonce Jones, Jacob Hairston, Maurlon Miller, Jerry Brown and Simeon Robbins. Those in the mix at tight end will be Kenova Childress, Khyree Jones and Mike McGill. Experience won’t be an issue on the defen-

singles. Jasmine Malachi, a sophomore who played Nos. 5 and 6, is back, along with Helena McGill, who played Nos. 6 and 7 last year.
Key newcomer: Cierra Atkins, a senior playing for the first time, should be at Nos. 5 or 6 singles.
The coach says: “We hope to have a few players join the team after school starts to help balance out our teams. Losing four of the top six in singles will be hard to replace. Sierra
Smith, the No. 5, moved to West Virginia. Geigel will again carry the team, hoping to repeat as PAC-6 2A singles tournament runner-up, all-conference, and regional qualifier. I am looking forward to watching Jasmine Malachi and Helena McGill improve and help the team win. This is a rebuilding year, but we will play hard, and are excited about the new season. Hopefully we can finish third or fourth in the PAC-6. Defending champion Wheatmore will be the team to beat.”

The coach says: “After losing six seniors a year ago, we bring a younger team into this season. With everyone around the conference graduating players, the conference race should be very competitive. The atmosphere feels different in practice, which creates an excitement for the season which was not felt last year. We look for Tevyn Jones to have another good season as a hitter and are really excited to have Mary Smith. Moving Taylor Hamrick to setter has been a smooth transition, as she has embraced the position and worked hard and learned the ins and outs of being a setter (the team leader). We look to reach our potential this year and not fall short of it in years past by working hard and together.”

who is making the transition from track, and Whitney Hodges. The coach says: “Overall I am excited about the cross country team this year. Our numbers are better than ever and the kids are working hard. I am not sure what the other teams are looking like, so it is hard for me to make comparisons. I am looking forward to the season and I know my team is going to compete to the best of their abilities. Blair and Griffin will be two of our strongest girls runners. Verdi is looking strong as well and will continue to improve throughout the year. The boys team has a strong line of underclassmen, led by Matt Blake, a 10th-grader who is running very well at practice. Other runners for the boys team include, Jacob Cartee, Jack Farrar, Thomas Gooding, Chris Hoffman, Matt Tutton and Michael Verdi.”
Lugo (junior midfielder), Hayden Appelberg (sophomore midfielder), Christian Olds (sophomore midfielder) and Sotos Pagiavlas (senior central defender). Arriving from the JV to contribute this year will be seniors Ben Martinez (midfielder) and Irving Barrera (defender/midfielder), as well as senior newcomer Nathan Cohen (midfielder). The coach says: “I think we have a good nucleus of returning players from last year’s team. We’d like to duplicate that success if possible, but we have a real mix of younger players without a lot of experience and we’re just going to have to put the right people in the right positions. Some players will be playing positions they did not play last year, and we’ll have to see how people adjust to their new roles. Hopefully the adjustment period will be quick. I think we have an extremely difficult conference, but it’s wide-open. We’d like to be right there near the top in the mix.”

Key returners: Morgan Jackson (junior), Jacklyn Pfuhl (soph.), Michelle Marrara (junior), Paola Ibe (senior). The coach says: “Ever optimistic, my returning key players will need to step up to compete in this, our second year of 4A. Morgan Jackson and Jacklyn Pfuhl at Nos. 1 and 2 (not necessarily in that order) should stand solid against the onslaught of what the other schools have to offer in their talent spots. Jacklyn has matured nicely over this past year and Morgan has done well to develop her shot selection. Paola Ibe and Michelle Marrara will have their work cut out for them defending their talent at 3 and 4 (again, not necessarily in that order). New to the top six are Grace Lim (sophomore) and Carrie Lee. They will have ample opportunity to show their grit and determination in their quest for wins.”

Cougars ready for Friday night lights BY STEVE HANF ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER
HIGH POINT – Endless hours of planning and preparation the last three years have all led up to this: High Point Christian Academy at Bishop McGuinness, 7:30 p.m., Friday. Welcome to varsity football, Cougars. “We’re excited about the challenge that lies ahead and we’ve had fun with it,” said HPCA coach Steve Lechner, in his third year leading the new program. “But we’re not going to know the full intensity of a varsity game until the first snap occurs. As a coach, that’s part scary and part exciting. We feel like our preparation has been on target. The school had a plan about how to do this in a staged approach and I think we’ve worked it very well the last three years.” The Cougars made nice strides in two seasons of junior varsity action, going 3-5 in their first year – winning three of their last four games – and 5-2 last season. The program boasts 55 players in all: 29 on the varsity, including some freshmen who will suit up for both squads, and 26 on the JV, which consists of sevenththrough ninth-graders.

High Point Christian coach Steve Lechner will turn to players such as (from left) Brandon Bennett, Daniel Fulk, Aaron Quate and Hayden Harrington in this first season. As a school, High Point Christian Academy enters its first year of competition at the 3A ranks within the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association. For football purposes, the Cougars compete in the Central Piedmont Football Conference against Asheville Christ School, Forsyth Country Day, First Assembly of Concord, Hickory Grove of Charlotte, Northside Christian of Charlotte, SouthLake Christian of Huntersville and Westminster Catawba of Rock Hill, S.C.
That league competes in the NCISAA Division II football ranks – smaller teams instead of the Charlotte Latins of the world. The top half of the CPFC made the state playoffs last year and First Assembly took the title with a 13-0 record. The goal for the Cougars this season, said Lechner, is to compete near the top of the conference and earn a playoff bid. A number of players with three years of experience could make that goal a reality. Colby Grant has matured into
a talented leader on the offensive and defensive lines while also playing some fullback. He had a 100-yard rushing game last year from the fullback spot. Andrew Shoemaker has been the team’s middle linebacker from the start and is a playmaker on defense while serving on the offensive line and as a backup QB. Shawn Millsap has been the only Cougars’ quarterback these three years and has grown into a physical presence with a strong arm. Hayden Harrington is
a talented wide receiver who prepped for last season by working with former Carolina Panther Ricky Proehl in Greensboro. He was ready to be a force for the Cougars – until suffering a seasonending injury in the third practice. But Harrington stayed with the team throughout last year and has returned as both a breakaway threat and a tough possession receiver. He also plays safety. Aaron Quate, with the

Cougars for two years, is a force on defense anywhere from safety to defensive end, and he can play three positions on offense. Joe Frejosky, a senior who offers versatility at running back and linebacker, is “the spiritual leader of the team,” said Lechner, while Brandon Bennett is another steady player with three years of experience who can suit up at

HIGH POINT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY CROSS COUNTRY
---
Coach: Heather Foster (seventh season) Last year in review: Boys – Triad Athletic Conference champs; third in state in NCISAA 2A; Girls – third in TAC, 14th in state. Key returners: Boys – Six of top seven from last year; freshmen Will Cliff, David Loy and Austen Zente, sophomore Connor Flater, junior Davis Pack and senior Trent Gabriel. Loy, Pack and Flater were All-TAC: Girls – Senior and fourth-year runner Abby Cliff is our most experienced runner, having earned All-TAC honors
in previous seasons. Also returning is junior and third-year runner Courtney Hale, who has worked hard in summer training and will hopefully be one of our top five. Jackie Love and Abby Auman are returning eighth-graders showing improvement. Key newcomers: Junior Tess Allison is new to cross country but coming off a successful track season in distance. Freshman Sydney Harris has looked good in early-season practices and will compete for the top spot with Cliff. Rachel Dahlheimer is a sophomore transfer
from Northern Guilford who has experience and should be one of our top runners by season’s end. The coach says: “With HPCA’s transition to 3A and a move to the PACIS, the competition will be much tougher, but the boys should still fare well with an experienced core coming off the most successful season in team history. Last year’s team saw all seven guys finish in the top 50 at state. Returning runners who will provide depth are junior Jake McKinney and eighth-grader Aaron Cliff. Ninth-grade newcomer Ridge Ivory has
looked strong in workouts and will help. With four seventh-graders on the roster, this team should be strong for several years to come. David Loy and Will Cliff should be able to compete with anyone in the conference by the end of the season. Leadership will be provided from Davis Pack and Trent Gabriel, both middle-distance track specialists who will be counted on for scoring with their extensive experience. Though still a relatively young team, most of these young men have been running since seventh grade and have the experience and motivation

Scarborough – junior setter; Tara Moseley – junior middle blocker.
Last year in review: Record 34-3, first in the Triad Athletic Conference, won the NCISAA 2A championship. Bethany Gesell was 2A state player of the year.
Key newcomers: Cayla Cecil – freshman outside hitter
Key returners: Bethany Gesell – senior right-side hitter; Ellen Fay – junior libero; Kathryn Cox – junior middle blocker; Macy
The coach says: “HPCA has a great volleyball tradition and this once again looks like a strong season. I am excited about being a part of this program and helping continue the winning tradition. The
team has been blessed with an outstanding group of young ladies who are committed to working hard and being their best both on and off of the court. As long as the girls stay committed to the team and willing to give everything on the court, this will be a successful season. This season we are moving up to 3A and really looking forward to the challenge of moving into the PACIS.
The girls will have to work very hard, but we are focused on competing for the conference title. Gesell will once again be the team leader. Her powerful offensive game will be on display from Day 1. She is hitting the ball as well as ever and will really challenge opposing defenses. There is no doubt she will once again be one of the top players in the state. She has shown tremendous leadership
skills during preseason workouts and I will be counting on her to continue this leadership throughout the season. Fay will be the defensive leader. As the libero, we are going to rely on her exceptional defensive prowess. By the end of the season she will be one of the best defenders in the state. The

Last year in review: Finished second in the Triad Athletic Conference. Jenna Curry (No. 4 seed), Sydney Curry (No. 6) won conference singles titles, and Jenna Curry-Carly Black won conference doubles (No. 3 seed).
Key returners: Jenna Curry (senior), Sydney Curry (sophomore), Carly Black (No. 3, junior) and Sarah Bridger (No. 5, sophomore); Mary Kathryn Field, Natalie Adams and Catherine Byles (all juniors) plus Hartlea Love and Brooke Stoll (sophomores) were on the team but did not play.
Key newcomers: Alexa Keaney (sophomore) and Linya Cheng (senior exchange student from China).
The coach says: “My favorite quotes are: 1) ‘Success is a
journey, not a destination’ by Ben Sweetland and 2) ‘Success is when preparation meets opportunity’ by Henry Hartman. This upcoming season will be exciting and challenging. With the graduation of two seniors and our school moving from 2A to 3A, we are going to have tougher competition. This is going to be a big rebuilding season for our team. However, I believe that our team has the skill and a competitive spirit to bring outstanding opposition to any competitor we face. Most importantly, each member of the team has the potential and skill to rise to that challenge. I also think that my experience as a former college player and two-time MIAA Champion can help with strategy and improving of mechanics. Overall, I see this is going to be a balance of enjoying the process of competing and improving, having fun, playing smart in order to win and most importantly display-

I like the fact that we are playing a tough schedule and tougher schools. It’s going to best prepare us to achieve our

can easily fight back and forth for the No. 1 spot. Bridger, only a sophomore, is playing really well so far and I see her playing at the No. 1 spot starting off the season.”

Wesleyan brings back a number of talented runners in (boys, from left) Zach Hostetler, Drew Thompson, David Leonard, Chris Kabrich and Brian Gottwalt and (girls, from left) Madison Hancock, Aubrey Thompson, Madeline Pace and Kristen Cossaart.
The coach says: For the boys, “We are definitely a young team with only one senior, David Leonard. He should be breaking into the top seven by the end of the season and will definitely add some needed leadership with his enthusiasm and dedication to the sport. We will be led by a group of ninth- through 11th-graders, and they have been working hard all summer. It will be a great chance to see if our summer runs pay off for us. Our first big test will come Sept. 21 when we run at Durham Academy, the two-time defending 3A champions. We will once again be led by Drew Thompson, who is a MileSplit U.S. Second-team Elite Runner. Thompson will receive some needed support from Zach Hostetler and Brian Gottwalt, both of whom have shown great potential in the preaseason. Key newcomers: More depth, talent and experience in the singles and doubles positions will be provided by additional players Sydney Broeur, Morgan Allred, Dakota Griffin and Lauren Southards.
The coach says: “Wesleyan is looking forward to a strong finish in the conference this year, with a return to the state playoffs. I’m excited about the depth and chemistry of this team. We have a lot of players
who have worked on improving their tennis skills throughout the year and the effort is evident. We are stronger from No. 1 through No. 6 than we have been in recent years. Our doubles teams have been together for a couple of years and the experience and confidence they play with will be important in close matches. Key returners: Taylor White, a senior outside hitter and setter; Bernetta Moore, a junior outside hitter; and Morgan Powell, a senior right/left side hitter.
Key newcomer: Sophomore middle hitter Jodi Smith.
The coach says: “I feel we have a very good chance to win the PACIS this year. We have two new additions joining our conference this year – Calvary Baptist and High Point Christian – which should be some good competition. I have a great group of girls on and off the court. Watch out for Bernetta Moore! She is the most amazing hitter I have ever seen at a high school level. She could and should go Division I in college. I’m just happy I have her for two more years. She’s a smart player who I can always depend on and is good in every area of volleyball. Our team went to the Appalachian State camp this summer and Bernetta got recruited to play at a Division II school in Pittsburgh as a junior! Bernetta and Taylor White are captains this year. I hope and feel with this team we can make it to the state playoffs and do well at them!”

Last year in review: Finished 15-7-4, advanced to the NCISAA 3A quarterfinals.
The coach says: “Senior centerbacks Carter Robbins and Manuel Martinez will anchor an experienced defense and Chase Kenny and Chad Staples will battle for the starting spot between the pipes. Riley Beck and John Tyner, a pair of seniors, will provide athleticism and pace to the Wesleyan back-four. Talented sophomores Grant Martin and Bob Gigliotti should compete for starting positions in the backfield. Despite losing All-State midfielder Jordan Lessard (Wheaton College) and All-PACIS selection Aaron Vidovich (Anderson College), the midfield should prove creative and solid. Wesleyan will undoubtedly miss Vidovich’s composure and Lessard’s creative play-making ability. However, Wesleyan returns two midfield starters in Cole Manring (junior) and Sam McBride (junior). That duo should
combine with senior midfielders Matt Rickman and Matt Clark, plus Erik Casterline (junior) and Ted Salmon (sophomore), to provide WCA with legitimate depth and presence in the middle of the pitch. The experienced Trojan midfield will feed a talented, albeit inexperienced, group of frontrunners. Junior forwards Mitchell Tobon, Daniel Mallard and Juan Pablo Marin will share minutes with sophomores Brandt Bronico, Craver Stamey and Hudson Owens. This group of Wesleyan frontrunners possesses depth, pace, tenacity, skill and a goal-scoring touch. The Trojans will be led by a group of eight seniors who desire unity, service and sacrifice for Wesleyan’s 2010 side. Our team philosophy is best summed up with Matthew 16:24: ‘If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.’ On and off the field, Wesleyan players strive to fulfill the Great Commission through a disciplined approach to life. It will be a great season for the girls to push and challenge each other, and through their challenges they will ultimately be improving. I am also excited about the addition of my assistant coach, Mary Olzer, a competitive local distance runner. She is bringing a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm
for the sport that I hop will propel our girls program to the next level. With the addition of Calvary and High Point Christian to our conference, we will definitely have to fight to earn that second-place finish again. The ladies also have a preseason ranking of 11th in the NCISAA 3A polls, and we are hoping to hold off our peak until late October and also break into the top 10 at state.

The coach says: “All of the oohing and aahing a few years ago when Westchester Country Day School revived its cross country program with a senior and five seventh-grade girls leading them to a runner-up conference finish and seventh-place finish at the 1A/2A state championships has subsided and seems like a distant memory. Some of our kids leave for a year to study abroad; some leave for a year or more to study at top prep schools around the nation; and others are so versatile that they explore other sports. So the number of runners will be down significantly for both teams. Despite the losses, there is talent, enthusiasm and great work ethic from the runners that do return.”

A new coach will turn to top Wildcats (from left) Whitley Glosson, Jessi Stockinger and Molly Harris this fall.
WESTCHESTER COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL

Coach: Bea Brown (first year)
Key returners: Three players with the most experience are seniors Whitley Glosson (middle hitter) and Molly Harris (outside hitter), and junior Jessi Stockinger (outsider hitter). Whitley Glosson earned all-conference honors last season. The other returning senior is Abby Procton, who is a middle blocker.
Others expected to play key roles: Kennedy Thompson (a sophomore who is the primary setter), Bailey Gilliam
(a sophomore outside hitter) and Sarah Kate Christiansen (a sophomore defensive specialist). The coach says: “The goal is to increase the number of games that we win. We have good leaders, the girls are dedicated and have a strong desire to win. We have discussed the Wildcat winning formula, which is ‘If it brings us together, it is the right thing to do. If it separates us, it is the wrong thing to do.’ The goal is to win the conference title and go to the state playoffs.”

Key newcomers: Year-round players Erica Sawyer (freshman) and Taylor Freeman (seventhgrader). The coach says: “I’m looking for the new additions to make an immediate impact in the starting lineup, helping to replace the two seniors we lost. linebacker or along the offensive line. “You’ve got to have kids who are willing to be versatile, be flexible, and you’ve got to have a system that allows for that,” Lechner said. “We have both of those things here. We’ve got to have those guys – we don’t have overwhelming numbers.” Other keys for this season include newcomers Matt Haas at tailback and Rockill Brown at fullback and tight end. Alex Cobb will play fullback and outside linebacker and is one of four sophomores on the varsity along with Brown, Josh Craft and Thomas Jarrell. Jarrell, a tailback and cornerback, retuned two interceptions for touchdowns last season. All-state swimmers Thomas Held and Matt Ardoin also will look to make a splash on the football field. Held was an impact player last season at defensive end, while Ardoin is a two-way lineman
who Lechner said is “one of the most fun guys on the team, always up and encouraging kids.” Tulley Dominguez has been the center for three years, and Daniel Fulk has put in the work to become a starter on the offensive line while also seeing some action on the defensive front. The Cougars also return kicker Jacob Choi, a student from Korea who played football for the first time last year but enjoyed the game so much he’ll also play some defense in addition to kicking. Following tonight’s opener at Bishop and a trip to Fayetteville, the Cougars play their first home game Sept. 3 against Village Christian. HPCA will play at the High Point Athletic Complex this season, on the field next to Simeon Stadium. shanf@hpe.com | 888-3526

2010 Football Roster
Talented newcomers in Trinity’s equation BY STEVE HANF ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER
TRINITY – Alex Mebane originally was “a math person, and Trinity’s football coach said he’s run the numbers. Last season, his Bulldogs roster boasted 23 seniors, which went a long way toward explaining how the football team survived when Wheatmore High opened and took half of Trinity’s freshmen, sophomores and juniors. This season? Trinity has 11 seniors in all, six who played last year, and a whopping 13 players on the varsity roster who played on Friday nights last fall. And yet, those numbers add up to something Mebane likes a great deal. “We’ve got more weap-
ons on this year’s team offensively than any team I’ve coached in the history of my coaching career, said Mebane, in his 28th year of coaching overall and fifth season leading Trinity. “This year’s varsity team is the most talented team I’ve had since I’ve been at Trinity High School. A lot of the kids are good players, good athletes, who just haven’t played before for whatever reason. And Mebane spent plenty of time scouring the halls for those baseball, wrestling and track standouts in the offseason just so Trinity, once bursting with players, could have 60 kids in the program. The varsity roster this year will carry 27 players and the JV just 33. Wheatmore coach
Eugene Everhart also estimated about 60 in the Warriors’ program. “We still have a numbers concern because it’s very difficult to build a football program when you only have one middle school team feeding two high school teams, Mebane said. Some of the inexperience at least can be offset by the fact senior Rhyne
Kivett returns at quarterback. Kivett owns two years of starting experience in the option attack and accounted for 12 touchdowns last year despite missing time due to injury. The other returning starters on offense are linemen Zach McNeill and Chris Sexton as well

Old/new coach eager to lead Panthers BY STEVE HANF ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER
WALLBURG – Chuck Henderson’s departure for rival Asheboro and Chris Adams’ late arrival as the new Panthers coach could have led to a few doubts about this year’s team. The arrival of 110 hopefuls out for the first days of Ledford football practice put to bed any of those fears. “It’s been good for a number of reasons,” said Adams, the former baseball head coach and football assistant at Ledford who returned after serving as assistant principal at Central Davidson High School. “The coaching staff has done an excellent job, the kids have been very committed, bought into what we want to do. It’ll take us a while to feel some things out, get everybody where they need to be, but all in all I’ve had fun and I’m glad to be back.”
Last season proved to be a bit of a roller coaster for the Panthers, who opened 0-3, won three straight against county rivals to get back on track, and ended up 6-6 overall and 3-2 in the Mid-Piedmont Conference. Ledford’s season ended with a 14-13 setback against Carson High in the first round of the 3A playoffs. As far as Adams is concerned, last year’s highs, lows and everything in between are ancient history. “I’ve not looked at one film from last year,” Adams said. “I told them coming in that every position’s open, every kid has a new start. Maybe you had a bad year, maybe you had a good year – I’m looking to see what you can do now.” The Ledford defense possesses a familiar look and returns a number of key starters. The line is anchored by returners Ty Anderson, D.J. Miller and Brandon Spong, all
seniors, while fellow senior Patrick Graven is a three-year starter who leads the unit from his inside linebacker spot. Other players in the mix up front include Josh Vivod, Hampton Stephens, Chase Averett, Ricky Hall and Christian Jones. Joining Graven at inside linebacker will be Lance Saunders and Blake Bowers, while the outside linebackers should be Justin Wilder and Tola Odedere. Also competing for time will be Cody Dull, Cody Essick, Zach Williams and Diego Talavera. The secondary contains a few questions due to graduation losses, but Adams likes how Kameron Conrad has performed at free safety and what he’s seen out of Andrew McNamara and newcomer Jared Hall – a baseball player out for football for the first time

LEDFORD CROSS COUNTRY
---
Coach: Tom Kotris (third season as head coach) Last year in review: Boys and girls were Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference champions. Abdul Butt, Jacob Crickenberger, Anthony Hughes, Chris Murphy, Jonathon Perdomo and Josh Phillips were all-conference. All except Butt and Crickenberger return. For the girls, Abby Carlson, Alex Crouch, Sam Miller, Mary-Catherine Perryman, Katie Reynolds and Lauren Skinner were All-MPC. The boys finished sixth in the NCHSAA 3A regional. The girls finished eighth.
Key returners: Anthony Hughes (sophomore), Chris Murphy (junior) and seniors Jonathan Perdomo, Josh Phillips and Jonathan Phillips for the boys; juniors Abby Carlson, Alex Crouch, Taylor McGhee and sophomore Sam Miller for the girls.
Key newcomers: Former head coach Shawn Loggins is helping out more in an assistant capacity. Last year he mainly helped run meets. This year he is at every practice and providing invaluable input. He is one of the top coaches in the state at the high school level and his input may be the biggest reason for any improvement we make. Among the girls: sophomore Jessie Dull, freshman Landon Smith, junior Karley Braswell and sophomore Charlotte Lamb, a transfer from South Mecklenburg.
The coach says: For the boys, “With four strong returning runners, we just need a decent No. 5, a guy who can run 17 or 18 (minutes), to show better than we did last year. There are several strong candidates – a couple of freshmen and a few new runners – who should be able to fulfill that requirement. Overall we are much deeper than in the past. After looking
at last year’s regional results, the guys have bought into the fact that we could be one of the best teams in the state. On average, our guys have generally improved by about a minute each year. Last year, if all of our guys had run about 20 seconds faster in regionals, we would have gone to the state meet. In addition, we feel we have a good shot at defending our conference championship and winning the county championship, although we expect great competition from Central Davidson in the county meet.” ... For the girls, “We are going to be missing a few runners who decided not to return; however, we are actually stronger and faster than last year’s team. The light bulb went off for Alex Crouch during track season and she realized she could compete with the top-end girls. She has been a beast in practice and is very focused on getting to the state meet, at the very least as an individual qualifier, which is very realistic for her. Sam Miller and Abby Carlson are key returning runners who are looking very strong in practice. One of our x-factors is Taylor McGhee. She had some injury issues during cross country (stress fracture) and track (respiratory) that kept her off everyone’s radar. However, she is every bit as good as Alex Crouch and is looking incredibly strong. In addition, we picked up some new runners – in particular Landon Smith and Jessie Dull – who look like the real deal. Both have smooth strides and are very strong, physically and mentally. We expect the girls to repeat as conference champions and hope to improve on both our county and regional showings, maybe even placing in both. We have a lot of new runners, so until we line up and race, we don’t fully know what we have, but we feel really good about what we are seeing.”
FROM PAGE 27
The coach says: “I am very excited this year to be coaching such a great group of girls. This team is very special because of the enthusiasm, chemistry and love of the game. We are going to be young this year, but should be pretty solid. Most of these girls spend their offseason playing JO ball or beach volleyball, and I have seen a lot of improvement. We are going to have some tough matches this year with North Davidson, Southern Guilford, Southwestern Randolph and Asheboro, but are looking forward to the competition. That is what makes the season fun. We would love to become the Davidson County champions for the third year in a row and give Southern Guilford a run for first place in the conference.”
The Panthers will look to spike the opposition with top talents (on floor, from left) Stevi Williams, Molly Saintsing, Cady Ray and Emily Vernon as well as (on stand, from left) Sara Katherine Kirkpatrick and Kaitlyn Otey.

Others helping in the defensive backfield will be Jacob Graven, Colt Hensley and Matt Ross. “Coach (Marlon) Morris does a great job coaching that group,” Adams said of the defense. “I feel like the defensive line and linebackers are our strength, and if you’ve got an area where you want to be experienced, that’s not a bad place for it to be.” Adams said he’ll look for the famil-

Warriors seek success in Year 2 BY STEVE HANF ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER
TRINITY – The numbers were positively awful last year for Wheatmore High School’s first-year football program. This season, the numbers are simply positive. “We’ve had a good start, around 60 kids, and that’s a big step to have a JV team,” said coach Eugene Everhart, in his second year at the school after a long tenure at Central Davidson. “We have definitely progressed physically, obviously we’re a year older. We have a few new faces, but we lost a few faces just from the discouragement.” Granted, there was plenty to get you down during an 0-11 season in which the Warriors scored just 32 points and allowed 40 or more in 10 of 11 games. But hope abounds at the sparking new school, which wasn’t even open when last year’s football season began. This fall, Wheatmore has a school, a stadium, a locker room, a senior class – all the things that were lacking when making the split from Trinity High last year. “We’re going to go play with a whole school, so that helps us,” Everhart said. “I think our kids understand what they are a little bit now. Everhart and his Warriors certainly hope so, despite the long odds – and the history of long losing streaks – that beset many new schools. On offense, quarterback Van Peedin and running back Josh Rickert return after spearheading last season’s attack. Peedin, a senior, found the going tough behind a small, inexperienced line, but Rickert – just a junior – managed to break free
for some long runs. He averaged 43.8 yards rushing per game. “They’re a lot better now than when the season ended,” Everhart said. “Van Peedin came out with a lot more confidence. Josh has a great nose and instinct. He understands how to play the running back position.” A pair of wide receivers return in Bryant Everhart and Justin Takac, while tight end Dalton Albertson also is back. The offensive line remains nearly intact with the return of Tyler Cook, Aaron Robbins, Josh Hinesley and Dakota Spence, while newcomer Chad Wilson and defen-
sive lineman Brandon Swift also should spend plenty of time up front. The fact that so many players return after last year’s challenges made this season’s practices that much easier. “We were able to come in with those older kids on the first day of mini-camp and they knew our base offense,” Everhart said. “Last year we were still learning right from left at this point. Obviously we’re far, far ahead of where we were this time last year. Our depth is much better. We can practice against each other better than we could last year.”

we also have more talent on offense than last year and will not have to rely on just one or two to make a play. Every team is going to make mistakes. The key is to take advantage of your opponents’ mistakes and to try and make your own mistakes few and far between. Our goal is to win the con-
ference and go as far as possible in the playoffs. In our conference, Randleman is going to be very good again. They have most of their team coming back and they have a great coaching staff. Trinity and Andrews should also be tough again. Both have extremely good staffs and a lot of talent.”
there by Jacob Miller, Curtis Seay, Cody Campbell and returning starter Kris Brown. The secondary features returning starter Marvin Taylor at one corner and part-time starters Matthew Peek and Michael Proctor. “I think it’s very important for us to be a lot more physical with people and it’s important for us to play at an upgraded tempo,” said Everhart, whose team competes in
the Piedmont Athletic 2A Conference. “It would help if we had some success early. We’re going to line up and give it our best shot and see what happens. We’re intending to go out and try to win football games. We’re not concerned with any kind of moral victories. We want to put some games on the left side of the column.”
iar defense to carry the team while the offense transitions from a spread attack to more of a traditional I-formation that Adams saw in his days as an assistant. “It’ll look more like old-timey Ledford football when folks come out to watch it,” Adams said. “We’ll be physical, get multiple looks. We will run the ball first and be able to throw it – try to be really good at play-action.” The biggest beneficiary of the focus on the running game figures to be De Greene. The junior enjoyed a solid regular season with 827 yards and six touchdowns last fall. The 5-foot6, 173-pound speedster has “great stature for a tailback, that small target,” Adams said. “He’s going to get to tote it a bunch. He’ll have to be a physical runner.” The good news is that Greene, Wilder and new fullbacks Brock Phillips and Pete Guy – a pair of baseball players “perfect” for fullback, Adams said – will be finding holes created by a strong line. Adams said it all starts with returning right tackle Sam Henderson. He’s joined by right guard Zach Welch, center Austin Glisson, left guard Matt Bashore and left tackle Austin Crispino. Tight end Tyreke Crump is a returning starter. Others expected to see time up front include Jonathan Colyn, Gunnar Wright, Josh Weavil, Jeremy Johnson, Caleb Dillon, Randy Hall, Sam Hill, Ryan Kime and David Flowers. The questions on offense revolve around the passing game. The two quarterbacks battling it out in the early going were sophomore Duke Boger and junior Erik Connolly. Boger split time at the position last year on JV, while Connolly was a defensive player. Boger had the edge in early workouts, Adams said. After losing several top receivers, Ledford also is looking at a number of newcomers running passing routes. Deyonta Dow, the other JV quarterback last season, is an athletic addition to the position. He’s joined by hopefuls Dylan Miller, Jeff Krauch, Chase Williams and Ryan Trudniak along with Darien Green, Michael Crawford, Jared Christian and Pete Lanser. Wilder and Greene have boomed punts in early practices, Adams said, while soccer player Josh Lee could be helping with placekicking duties. “We’ll get there,” Adams said. “It’s just new. They’ve come a long way and I think we’ve got enough options in the arsenal that we can make some things happen.”

Key returners: With no senior class last year, Wheatmore did not lose anyone to graduation. The Warriors are going to be really strong in the middle with senior Courtney Rains. At the other middle is junior Abby Allison, who was the most improved player last year and after a summer of club volleyball is playing extremely well. At outside is junior Lindsay Whitaker, who is a very consistent hitter and also a good blocker, and senior Betty Denny, a versatile player. At right-side are juniors Laura Fortner and Abbey Byrd, plus senior Madison Drye. Also back are setters Hannah Cranford and Emily Grantham, who both have good hands and understand the game very well, plus defensive specialists Katy Davis, Paige Hudson and Brittany Lowe.
Key newcomers: Freshman setter Kelly Davis and freshman outside hitter Kathryn Johnson. Davis is an extremely athletic setter with very good hands, while Johnson has a great swing from the outside and is also an excellent defensive player. Both will see a lot of time on the floor and get better as the season progresses. The coach says: “We are a very defensive-oriented team with good blocking at the net and a very talented group of defensive specialists, but

Thomasville doesn’t lack for motivation BY ELIOT DUKE THOMASVILLE TIMES
THOMASVILLE – The Bulldogs have experience when it comes to entering a new season after losing to a rival in the playoffs. Two years ago, a motivated Thomasville squad still stewing over a playoff defeat to JordanMatthews ran through its competition en route to an undefeated state championship season. This year, the only variation to the theme is the opponent, as Thomasville fell to arch-rival Lexington in the third round of the 2009 playoffs, leading to one long summer in Bulldog country. “It’s not good at all losing to Lexington,” senior quarterback Sam Nelson said. “We don’t want to have that happen again. Lexington hadn’t beaten us in 16 years.” Should history repeat itself in 2010, the Bulldogs will come back stronger, hungrier and ready to claim their fifth state title in seven years. While last year featured a plethora of fresh faces, this squad returns much of the same team that won the Central Carolina Conference. “We have to put last year behind us and come out this year and work hard,” said senior safety Isaiah Williams of losing to the Yellow Jackets. “If
DON DAVIS JR. | HPE
The hits figure to keep on coming for the Thomasville defense thanks to players such as Chris Ross (21), Zerrick Baker (32) and Davonte Gordon-Hunter. everybody has a positive attitude, we can go pretty far.” By the time conference play rolls around in October, the Bulldogs will be battle-tested more than perhaps any team in the state. With games against perennial powers Albermarle, Mount Airy and A.L. Brown, Thomasville will have to come out ready to play in order to avoid a 1-4 start like last year. “We had a tough schedule last season and we were a young team,” senior linebacker James Boyd said. “Last year can’t do anything but help us this year. That’s
the good thing about playing a tough schedule. If we can improve during these non-conference games, we’ll be that much better when conference play starts.” Offensively, the Bulldogs return key pieces but also are looking for newcomers to step in and fill voids left from graduation. Nelson returns for his second season under center after passing for 1,541 yards and 19 touchdowns. Favorite target Brandon Lucas, however, graduated, leaving a glaring hole at wide receiver. Sharuan Mouzone will see more balls his way after catching 17 passes
for 223 yards and a touchdown as a sophomore. Shaquan Johnson also is expected to see more playing time at receiver once he fully transitions from the running back position. Like most seasons in Thomasville, the offense will focus on the running game, and the Bulldogs have a pair of ball carriers who should make life miserable for opposing defenses. Seniors Quin Riley and Kesean Green each tallied 1,000 yards rushing in 2009 and scored a combined 20 touchdowns. Both had

The coach says: “By far the youngest team in the conference last year while starting as many as six freshmen. We should be much better this year with returning senior striker Izzy Escamilla (31 goals and 11 assists). Sophomore Julian Loera will anchor a much stronger defense with seniors Gleb Chuphakin and Troy Butler covering the wings. Seniors Alex Beasley and Walker Williams bring some punch at the halfback position, while sophomore Rob Styers brings some power and accuracy to a midfield that struggled at times last

year. Eric Orellana and Chikis Ayala anchor a solid midfield with several JV players fighting for playing time on what I feel is the deepest and strongest team that I have had since I have been at Thomasville. With East Davidson and Salisbury being loaded with experience, I expect us to be competitive every game, but it is a big hill to climb to catch up with their talent and experience. I believe that we will surprise some teams because we are as conditioned and strong as we have ever been. I do not see us quitting with anybody and I feel we have a good chance to fight for at least the third playoff spot in the conference. Speed will be our biggest weapon that we will bring into a topheavy conference and hopefully we will catch some teams sleeping and looking past us. Go Dawgs!”

Eagles hope to f ly high in new offense BY ZACH KEPLEY THOMASVILLE TIMES
THOMASVILLE – Youth has been a problem for East Davidson the last few seasons, but that is not the case in 2010. The majority of the team consists of upperclassmen, including 14 seniors. There is plenty of experience to go around, but there is still one problem. “There isn’t anyone else in the league young anymore, either,” said coach Bryan Lingerfelt, who begins his ninth season with the program. East limped home to a 4-7 record and missed out on a trip to the playoffs for a second straight season last year, but with some talent prepared to come back, optimism was going to be high. Lingerfelt remains optimistic about the possibilities of a sound season, though the team was dealt a crushing blow in the offseason. Dylan Gallimore, an All-CCC performer who rushed for nearly 1,200 yards, was involved in a car crash and suffered a head injury. He was making great progress and was on schedule to be a part of the team for his senior year, but one simple test may keep him from doing so.
LARRY MATHIS | FOR THE THOMASVILLE TIMES
East Davidson will be powered this year by top returners such as (from left) Blake Dodd, Max Suits and Allen Godbolt. “It has been a roller coaster with one doctor saying he could not play and another saying he could play,” said Lingerfelt. “He took a test right before camp but failed a part of the test that showed a part of the brain that was damaged had not completely healed. He can take it again in September, but I would say there is a slim chance he would play this year. I am real sad he is probably not going to play his senior year.” Instead of feeling sorry for themselves with the possible loss of one
of their premier players, the remaining East squad has worked that much harder, and in the process, learned a new system that will be implemented on the offensive side. Lingerfelt has installed a flexbone offense that will get plenty of players involved in the backfield, instead of the hard-nosed, smashmouth football fans have seen in the past. “We are learning something new to the coaches and the players and it will probably take us a year to figure it out, but I think it is the best direc-
tion for our program to go,” Lingerfelt said. The man behind the operation will be senior quarterback Taylor Warren. He will decide who gets the ball or if he wants to keep it himself. “He is going to be the decision maker and I just told him it all hinges on him. The pressure is off me now, so it ought to be good,” joked Lingerfelt. “He has done well with it and worked hard in the spring, so hopefully the work will translate into success.”

as running back Jordan Johnson. Sexton and Johnson both started on defense last year and are making the switch to offense this fall. Two of the top newcomers are at wide receiver, where Nathan Willett and Jake Smith now play. Willett hasn’t played football since middle school and Smith is out for the first time, but both are good athletes who should be able to make up for the graduation of Ryan Spencer (40 catches for 668 yards). “We’ll be fine there,” Mebane said. The same goes for the tight end spots, where Daulton Rogers and Daniel Robbins are solid. Mebane called Rogers a Division I prospect given his size and speed. Robbins suffered an injury early in his JV season last fall, but has bounced back well. The running game will get a boost from sophomore Colin Stout, who played at Archdale-Trinity before heading to High Point Christian Academy last year. He’s back as Trinity’s fullback. “We’ve got a quarterback who can run it and throw it, a tight end who runs a 4.6 (time in the) 40, two receivers that can do what Ryan Spencer did last year, we run the triple-option as well as anybody in the state,” Mebane explained. “If we stay healthy, people are going to have major issues dealing with our offense. The question is, can we deal with the numbers issue in terms of depth and injuries, and can we bring these talented athletes along and use their abilities so they’re not paralyzed while trying to learn a system? We can’t be as complex. These kids are just
learning how to play football in a lot of these cases.” How does the Trinity defense stack up? “Ditto,” Mebane offered. The lone returning starters are Sexton and Brad Auman on the line. Sexton and McNeill will “tag team” at the ends so neither player is forced into going both ways an entire game. Rogers and Kegan Dunn also will play up front, while Stout and standout wrestler Cameron King will step in at linebacker. Varsity backup Coulter Pruitt will lead the way at outside linebacker, and the secondary will include former East Montgomery product Aaron Taylor after he moved into the district. “What we have on defense is a mix of a few returners that are solid players and a very inexperienced cast with some pretty talented athletes,” Mebane said. Questions abound on special teams as well – “let’s don’t punt,” Mebane said with a laugh – although soccer player Scheynen Loeffler is out to provide a boost in that department. How far will all this unproven talent carry the Bulldogs in the Piedmont Athletic 2A Conference after Trinity went 6-6 overall and 3-2 in the league last year? “When you have a team this inexperienced, it’s important to have some success early,” Mebane summed up. “If we develop that confidence, I’m very sure our kids will figure out how to play once we get to our conference games. I’ll be disappointed and surprised if we don’t contend for the conference championship this year.” shanf@hpe.com | 888-3526

Talented Tigers seeking leadership BY STEVE HANF ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER
JAMESTOWN – The talent comes and goes for the Ragsdale football program, and the transition from last fall to this one should prove no exception for the Tigers. Nine of 25 graduated seniors have moved on to college squads. Twenty seniors who helped Tommy Norwood’s team go 13-1 last year are in place. But one question remains to be answered for the Tigers. “We’ve got to find out who the leaders are going to be on the football team,” said Norwood, entering his 13th year leading Ragsdale. “We’ve got to see who’s going to stand up and take those kids’ places. In some key spots we’ve got the starters coming back, but we’ve just got to see who’s gonna rise to the top.” The defense lost storied leaders such as Billy Stone, Walt Sparks and Daniel McNeill, while the booming kicks of Kasey Redfern also must be replaced. The offense, meanwhile, could pick up where it left off despite losing speedster DeSean Anderson in the passing game. Quarterback Luke Heavner is back for his senior season, and despite passing for 1,948

Heavner boasts more speed and owns plenty of varsity experience, while Herndon can put some zip on the ball and enjoyed a good year on JV. Norwood admitted that Herndon likely could start for most of the teams the Tigers play.
Whoever ends up throwing the passes will have a fleet of talented receivers at his disposal. Big target Tyquan Roberts returns along with fellow senior Deshawn Shouse. Three JV call-ups in Erik Romer, Justin Briley and Brandon Walker join junior transfer Anthony Stewart – similar to Anderson in size and speed – among those battling for playing time. “It’s just flip a coin with
those six,” Norwood said. “I feel comfortable with those. That’s been a real pleasant surprise.” The running game also possesses a talented incumbent being pushed by top-notch competition. Donovan Smith rushed for 1,443 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior, but fellow senior Barry Brown (257 yards in reserve) and a talented sophomore are fighting for carries. The offensive line includes good depth highlighted by returning starters Andy Willard at right tackle and Matt Martin at center. Four players competing for time at guard include Andrew Chappell, Jon Christ, Colorado Pratt and Keith Tankersley, while those at the tackles should be Austin Greene, Ryan Hurley and Dalton Gray. At tight end, Pete Romer returns and Karson Redfern is up from JV to get playing time there. Redfern will try to follow in his brother’s footsteps in the kicking game after performing those tasks last season for the JV. Ryan Wall, who kicked occasionally last fall, and Brad Davis also are competing for the job. The familiar names are much harder to find on the defensive side of the

Key returners: Senior Brittany Morris, a libero/defense specialist, should be one of the top defensive players in the area after averaging 20 digs a match last year. She has a hard-nosed, go-getit attitude with no ball beating her to the floor. Senior setter Kathryn Carter, a great setter and great team player who plays every minute, has improved her hitting skills as well. Morgan Hooks, a senior outside hitter who was

The other ends will be Grant Desjardins, who saw some action last year, along with Brian Nwokolo and Will Sams. A big front line will be filled in by Chaka McCoy – who got some playing time last fall – Lareal Jones and JV call-up Larry Ogunjobi. And while the linebacking corps appears the most damaged without Stone and Sparks, three of the four players in the mix this year saw decent action last fall. RAGSDALE CROSS COUNTRY

Coach: Anne Popek The coach says: “We have several kids returning this year and it should be an exciting year for our cross country teams. On the girl’s side we have senior captain Grace Popek, who should do very well. She is coming off a good season last year with all-conference cross country and track honors. She placed sixth this summer at the AAU Grace Popek JO national meet as well as placing in the top 12 for the 4x800 at JO Nationals. Senior Brielle Burnett also competed at the JO National meet in the 4x800, 4x400 and 4x100. She will be one of our top girls this season. Junior Kim Walsh placed ninth at the JO Nationals in the steeplechase and will make a strong impact on the girls team! The boys team is still very young, but strong. We have two juniors in Paul Sidam and Patrick Francis. They should make all-conference this year. Thusan Fernado, Taylor Mitchel and Thomas Popek, all returning sophomores, should make strong contributions. Thomas Popek qualified for the AAU JO nationals in the steeple, so he should do well this season.”

fear the 4A bracket as much as last year, our first year moving up. I only graduated two seniors from last year and feel that the group I have this year is working hard to match last season’s record and top-two finish in the Piedmont Triad Conference. This team is more defensive-minded and balanced on the floor. I have a couple of players who will have to step it up as sophomores, but feel they will not only contribute but make a huge difference on the floor. Most of the teams in our conference were young last year, so I expect the level of play to be increased from top to bottom. Northwest Guilford is always a powerhouse and even though we split in regular season last year, they took first place. We made it to the second round of the playoffs. It is always good to get back on the floor and compete.”

Young Storm still poised for success BY STEVE HANF ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER
SUMNER – With just seven seniors on the varsity roster and six sophomores also ready to play up, Southern Guilford coach Darryl Brown leads the youngest team he’s had in his six seasons as head coach. That’s not necessarily a bad thing for Southern, which as usual boasts plenty of speed and athleticism up and down the roster, no matter the grade. “The thing I’ve liked is they’re extremely coachable, eager to learn – they’ve done exactly what we’ve asked out of them from the time they started lifting in February to this summer’s offseason conditioning,” Brown said. “It’s been nice. Our senior class had some good players, but it’s nice to get some fresh faces in and get a new start with a different group of guys. “It’s a fun group,” Brown added with a smile. “I like this group a lot. I told ’em, ‘I haven’t grown to love you yet, but I like you.’ ” There’s especially a lot to like on defense. Most of the secondary returns: Dewarren Jefferson started last year and is back after missing part of the season with injury. He’ll

He’s joined there by Malcolm Haywood and Matt Colvin. Up front, nose guard Tevan Marshall and tackle Darren Mitchell will anchor the line. Mitchell earned all-conference honors last fall, and is joined on the line by Diavonte Brown. Coach Brown called Diavonte Brown “almost a carboncopy” of Mitchell, and the sophomore has plenty of talent to spare. Nick Bell, another all-

At outside linebacker, Xavier Freeman – a varsity cornerback last year – and JV call-up Antonio Lucas will rotate. “We have the potential to be pretty good on defense,” the coach said. “The biggest question right now is linebacker play. We know what Nick is going to give us. If those other sophomores
fall in ... we’ve got a lot of returners in the secondary and defensive line, so I expect them to be pretty decent.” Southern’s offense will have a slightly different look this season because of personnel issues. On the plus side, junior quarterback Jamie Cunningham has a year of starting experience under his belt and will be more of a threat throwing the ball. From a negative standpoint, the Storm will be lacking a proven running back for the first time in a long time. “We’ve changed the offense a little because of

Coach: David Martin (second season)
Last year in review: Boys finished fifth in the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference. Hunter Meshaw was named to the girls’ all-conference team.
Key returners: Quinton Mitchell (junior), Stanley Jarozewski (senior).
The coach says: “We have several top returning runners from last year that are looking forward to building on a strong foundation from last season and during the offseason.”

Coach: Tara Simoncini (third season for the girls) Last year in review: Finished 2-8 in the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference, 4-11 overall. Won four more matches than the year before and finished ahead of North Forsyth in the final conference standings. Key returners: Junior Christina Perry has taken over the No. 1 seed with seniors Ashlee Branch, Lindsey Rose and Francesca Riker falling in behind in the second, third and fourth spots. Junior Samantha Wall will be starting the season at No. 5.
Key newcomers: Sophomore Tiaira Moragne has joined the team and moved right into the No. 6 spot. We also welcome juniors Rosie Zitawai, Iverly Delgadillo and sophomore Miranda Major. The coach says: “Every season brings new challenges. This season we lost our No. 2 seed, Ambria Vanstory, and our lineup has been completely rearranged. I hope my girls are able to keep their heads held high and reach down deep and play like I know they can play. I am excited to see how the season unfolds. I am sure there will be some challenging going on for seeds as the season progresses!”

Coaches: Jodi Deaton and Brad Meadows (third season)
Last year in review: 8-8-1 overall, 3-5 Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference; Michael Mattocks, Julio Yanez and Kevin Comvalius were named All-MPC.
Key returners: Kevin Comvalius (senior), Rodney Stone (junior), Miguel Castellanos (junior) and Ryan Griffith (senior). Key newcomers: Ricardo Hernandez, Amilcar Martinez, Corey Drake and Rod-

team, and I’m not saying we’re changing that, but we’re going to need more out of our passing game than we’ve needed in the past.” Leading the ground game this fall will be “whoever’s hot,” Brown said. The top trio consists of Javone Robinson, who had a strong JV season as a freshman and did not play last year; Haywood, a speedster from Dudley’s JV; and Malik Moseley, a strong sophomore who ran for Southern’s JV last year. “We’ve been feeling our way through those guys to see what they would give us,” Brown said. In Cunningham, the Storm has a QB who Brown called “probably the hardest worker since I’ve been here. He’s improved tremendously, the kids respond to him and I look for him to take the leadership role even a little more.” The receiving corps will include deep threat Butler, possession receiver Thompson, and the height and good hands of Colvin, who was on the varsity last year but missed most of that sophomore campaign due to injury. Freeman also will get some time at receiver. Handling the protection and opening holes will be several newcomers. Center Keemar Bachelor saw his JV season end early due to injury, left guard Emanuell Broni played defense last fall for Eastern Guilford, and right tackle Caleb Teetor is up from the JV. Left tackle J’lin Rose started on the varsity last year as a sophomore and senior right guard Derrick Nelson saw limited varsity snaps. Bell and Jordan Tripp will see time at tight end. “We’re not big at all as a team, but we’re athletic,” Brown said. “We’ll be able to hold our own at the skill positions.” Matt Brandon will handle the kicking duties for Southern, sticking with football this year after playing football and soccer the past two seasons. shanf@hpe.com | 888-3526

2010 Football Roster
Villains hope to speed into end zone BY STEVE HANF ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER
KERNERSVILLE – Bishop McGuinness possesses a number of players with roughly the same physical attributes. Luckily for coach Charlie Jones, while his Villain roster is indeed short on size, many of those smaller players have speed to burn. “We’re not very tall – a bunch of 5-5s, 5-6s in the backfield,” Jones said. “We’re very lucky right now. We have good speed at our skill positions. That’s probably our advantage in a lot of cases.” Bishop returns its top two offensive threats from last year’s 9-3 team that finished 5-2 in the Northwest 1A/2A Conference. Marty DeFrancesco Jr. finished with 699 yards rushing, 452 receiving and 15 touchdowns – despite missing the final two games of his junior season due to injury. Fellow senior Jared Pluciniczak, meanwhile, tallied 868 yards on the ground and found the end zone 13 times. Both earned allconference honors. “Marty in particular is very good in space with a lot of speed and we’ve got to figure out ways to get it to him,” Jones said. “Jared is like an every-down back, Marty’s more a home run hitter. Coach: Robert Youtz (sixth season)
Last year in review: Boys won their first-ever Northwest 1A/2A Conference title, finished third at regionals and seventh at state; team’s fifth straight year in the top nine at state. Austin Tritt, Alex Wordsworth and Preston Khan were AllNWC. The girls were NWC and regional champs for the fourth straight year. Last year was the fourth straight year of finishing in the top four at state. Meredith Bennett, Katie Pellitteri and Micheala Dimoff were All-NWC, while Meredith and Kathryn Bennett were all region and Meredith Bennett was all-state. Outside of the team success, the key highlight of the year was going to California for an invitational. Meredith Bennett broke the school record by running 19:13. The old record was 19:38.

Key returners: Boys – Senior Preston Khan is our captain. He has the fifthbest time in school history and is our only returning varsity member; sophomores Alex Preudhomme and Greg Redden, Nos. 8 and 9 last year; junior Brian Jordan, should have a key impact this year. Girls – Junior Kathryn Bennett, the top returning runner and one of our captains; junior Michaela Dimoff, consistently one of our top 5 or 6 last year and also a captain; sophomore Alex Errington, who had the third-fastest freshman time in team history last year; and sophomore Brynna Tremblay, who had the eighth-fastest time in history as a freshman. Key newcomers: Boys – Freshmen William Johnson and Sam Williams, sophomore Zach Bruns and seniors Shane Delaney and Peter LaMuraglia; Girls – Senior Bailey
Seach, freshman Carly Kreber and sophomore Brianna Eichhorn. The coach says: “The boys lost six of seven from the varsity, but this team can surprise a lot of people. They have trained a lot over the summer and we have a lot of key additions from the team last year and a lot of new runners this year that should contribute fairly well. We have a group of sophomores that should be a huge part of our success, and Preston Khan should be the guy that leads the team in most races. It will be hard to defend the conference title, but we should be in the mix and we are looking to qualify to state for the sixth straight year. ... For the girls, “The team is very young with only four seniors. We have a lot of freshmen and sopho-

Key returners: Senior midfielder/defender Patrick Mullin was all-conference at outside back and will see more time at midfield this year. Junior Noah DeAngelo (all-state) will be asked to score more goals. He had 17 goals and 35 assists last fall. Another important player will be junior MF Michael Enos (All-NWC, all-region). Senior defender Peter Jacoby and MF Nick Groat must also take on bigger roles this fall. Key newcomers: Junior MF Brendan
O’Connor will move to varsity full time and will need to contribute. Incoming freshmen Josh Markwell and Harrison Plemmons will see significant time on defense, filling holes from graduation. The coach says: “People may take us lightly this year, but if they do this team is capable of making them pay. We lost our all-time leading scorer (Evan Seach, 100plus goals) and a solid defender (Atticus Lum), both of whom are playing in college and were great players along with the other seniors, but this year’s team is hungry. We have the highest work rate and enthusiasm I have seen since coming to Bishop. Surry Central made it to the Final Four in the 2A playoffs last year and has almost the whole team back, so they will be a challenge for us. If our young guys mature and improve, we will be ready to give them a battle.

mores. We should have everyone coming back next year that will be on varsity, so this year will be a springboard to next year. With that said, with the young talent we have we will be a hard team to beat. We will look to qualify to state and try and be in contention to win conference and regionals. The key will be our young runners and how much they develop, but if they stay injury-free and progress like year’s past, we should be OK. I believe this team will surprise a lot of people, as we lost five of our top seven, but we have a lot of good young talent ready to step up.”
FALL SPORTS GUIDE
Fall 2010
New coaches provide new look for Glenn BY STEVE HANF ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER
WINSTON-SALEM – Aldine Payne might be the new head coach of Glenn’s football team, but it’s his assistants who might be helping the Bobcats make the most noise this year. “We’re going to the flexbone, and Coach (Gary) Whitman and Steve Edwards know it as good as anybody around,” said Payne, Payne who takes over for Dickie Cline after serving as a Glenn assistant the past seven years. “They worked at Georgia Tech’s camp, they know the offense, can make adjustments out of it. I feel like if you get coaches who know what they’re doing, let them do it.” There’s one other little bonus with the flexbone. “It means Josh Hawkins is gonna get his hands on the ball a lot,” Payne said with a smile. Hawkins is getting looks from countless colleges, including many in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The senior rushed for 132 yards per game last season and scored 13 TDs for a Glenn team that finished 8-4 overall and 42 in the Piedmont Triad 4A Conference.
SONNY HEDGECOCK | HPE
Glenn’s defensive efforts will be paced this fall by top returners (from left) Kion Young, Ja’Vante Crump and Jaie Maness. “He’s special,” Payne said. “He’s always smiling, always happy – he’s just a special running back. He sees things that most running backs don’t see, makes something out of nothing. He made us go. We wouldn’t have been 8-4 last year if he wasn’t our tailback.” Hawkins will be the key cog in an offense led by new quarterback Cameron Campbell. Last year’s backup has grown to an imposing 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, and will be a key athlete in the backfield. The option offense also will include backup QBs Ryan Parker and Paris Harris, who will have other roles as well, and slot backs Aaron Richardson, Dominique
Fuller and Aaron Hendrix. The 6-3 Tyler Lee will be a top target in the passing game. The offensive line will be anchored by Danny Owens, Cameron Wheeler, Grant LeMasters, Aaron Reavis and Connor Manuel. Whitman coaches the linemen, while Edwards and Antwon Stevenson work with other parts of an offensive unit that has enjoyed this new system. “They’re committed to it, they like it,” Payne said of the players. “I’m a firm believer that in college, you recruit players to fit your system, where as in high school you’ve got to teach what your coaches know. That’s why we went to it.”
Payne remains a stalwart on the defensive end, where the Bobcats return all their key players in the secondary. Former outside linebacker Perry Worthy will move to cornerback opposite starter Chris Simmons. Safety Josh Caruthers also is back after seeing a lot of action last year. The team’s leading returning tackler is Kion Young, who started at inside linebacker last fall as only a sophomore. The front will have almost an entirely different look. The top returning player is end Jaie Maness, while Ja’Vante Crump is expected to use his athleti-

cism to have a big year on the defense after shifting from offense. Others on the line will be T.J. Hines, Jarred Chandler, Tyler Tirpak, Calvin Cheeks, Brandon Williamson and Charles Williard. “I like our overall speed defensively, and the offense is speed, Kind of like the Bobcats’ schedule, which includes all 4A schools except for 2A talent Carver, and tough openers on the road at North Davidson and West Forsyth. “I think our schedule is probably one of the toughest in the state, Payne said. “We could be 0-5 and be a good football team, but you have to (play a tough schedule) with a good conference. GLENN VOLLEYBALL
Coach: Ailene Griffith (ninth season as head coach, 10th with program)
Last year in review: Finished 8-14 overall, tied for fourth in the Piedmont Triad 4A Conference; Meredith Tilley was named all-conference; graduated only two seniors.
Key returners: Meredith Tilley, senior middle hitter, returning starter; Catherine Head, junior middle hitter, returning starter; Emily Wall, junior setter, returning starter; Morgan Meyer, junior outside hitter, returning starter; Rianna Hutton, junior outside hitter; Meagan Tilley, senior right-side hitter; Erin Bentley, senior right-side hitter; and Kaitlyn Manuel, senior libero.
VILLAINS Speedsters return for Bishop football squad FROM PAGE 42
The defense took the biggest hit at graduation, and the Villains had plenty to replace considering the unit pitched five shutouts. Lum leads the group, with the only other returners being James Black at defensive end and DeFrancesco and Pluciniczak at the corners. “The transitions we have to make are position-wise, Jones explained. “A lot of the same guys played both last year, but defensively we’re replacing people with a lot of guys who played a lot on offense. I think the good news is we had the same coaching staff. It won’t be a huge change. Most of the guys who will be playing this year started as JV players on defense and they’ve all played a lot and practiced, so this year we’re in a good enough position not to be making any huge leaps. The line will include Peterson, new starter Todd Turman, plus Urban, who
s 0LACQUES Key newcomers: Jena Reisenauer, junior middle hitter/outside hitter; Hannah Forbes, sophomore outside hitter; Faith Mahaffey, sophomore libero/setter; Julia Rothrock, senior middle hitter. The coach says: “I have very high hopes for the season. The PTC will be a tough fight as it usually is, but I think we should be a contender for the top spot. My girls have worked hard in the offseason and thus far at practice. We’ve really jelled as a team and it’s exciting when that comes together. I have four returning starters whom I’m expecting great things from and other players who can step right in to fill the spots left open by graduating seniors.
will play defense for the first time. Fields will join Lum at linebacker, with Sgroi and Patrick O’Shea stepping in at outside linebacker. Ridenhour will see time at safety. “Last year we had very balanced junior and senior contributions, so as the season went on we had more depth, Jones said. “This year’s junior class is a little more unproven. We need some contributions from them. As the season goes on we need to try to find some guys who will step up and you can rest people. “The whole key to our season is injuries, Jones added. “We just don’t have a big team – 31 players. It’s especially true in 1A – one, two injuries and you’re putting people into spots they don’t play all the time. It really makes you think about how to manage practice, things like that. shanf@hpe.com | 888-3526

FALL SPORTS GUIDE
Fall 2010
THS CROSS COUNTRY
---
Coach: Alan Reavis (second year) Last year in review: Last year was the first season for cross country at Thomasville in many years. We had six men that stuck with the program through the season. We finished with three wins, but just competing was the highlight of our season.
Key returners: Seniors Steven Stanley and Jason Stewart will return to lead the team. Stanley has greatly improved. He worked throughout the offseason and is already running better than he did at the end of last season. Junior Ben Fuson has also improved and is expected to be a key runner for the Bulldogs.
Key newcomers: Our roster has increased dramatically. Sophomore Justin Hunter didn’t run for us in 2009, but he is already showing great strength and potential. I believe he could be very competitive for us in the years to come. It also appears that we will have a woman’s team for the first time. Junior Nelibeth Diaz has been an early leader in practice.
The coach says: “The Central Carolina Conference is very competitive in cross country. As a second-year team I expect us to continue growing. Hopefully we can build a program that showcases the athletic ability of Thomasville.”

fumbling issues last season, but the duo comes into this year ready to lead the Bulldogs back to the state title. “We’re ready to go out there and play. We can go pretty far,” Green said. “Everybody just has to come out, execute and be ready to give 100 percent. We have to come out and be physical and hit somebody in the mouth.” While some may see the THS backfield as crowded, Riley and Green look at the rotation not as a competition but a partnership. “It’s real cool because we’ve grown a lot since last year,” said Riley. “We just try to help each other out so if one of us falls the other is there to catch him.” Up front, the Bulldogs will have a load of talent and experience. Center Jordan Hagens, left guard Dean Small, left tackle Sherrod Young, right guard Daniel Morgan, right tackle Anthony Irving and tight end Kenneth Mitchell appear to be the starters, with juniors Shawn Davis and Eddie Wellborn providing depth. Defensively, the Bulldogs return a handful of playmakers who got bet-
ter and better last year, led by senior linebackers Robert Davis and James Boyd. Davis had 100 tackles in 2009 and forced three fumbles, while Davis registered 10 sacks and 16 tackles for a loss. Zerrick Baker and Dezmond Wilson also will see time at linebacker. “I think we’ll be pretty good,“ Boyd said. “We just have to take it game by game and do the best we can until we get another shot at (Lexington).” The defensive line is led by Lawrence Thomas and Breyon Watkins. Jaquan Daniels, Jay Spires, Tyler Pedley and Jaleel Rogers will rotate on the line to provide depth. Dee Dow is no longer roaming the secondary, but senior free safety Isaiah Williams returns and looks poised to pick up where his counterpart left off as one of the premier ball hawks in the conference. Cornerbacks Davonte Gordon-Hunter and Chris Ross will be tested early in the season, while the secondary also will include Shameek Spence and Tevin Davis duke@tvilletimes.com | 888-3578

Lambert, junior hitter/defense; Brooke Ward, junior defense; Courtney Hardaway, junior outside-middle hitter/blocker. The coach says: “Our main goal is to make the playoffs! I’m excited to see last year’s JV players contribute and play a major role this season. I’m confident with the team we’ve put together this season. They’re a great group of girls that work very well together as a team!”

Running alongside will be fullback Allen Godbolt, slot back Blake Dodd (All-CCC), Max Suits, Ray Tolley and Justin Mounts. “We have got to go full speed every play, and if they are not going full speed we need to get someone in there that can,” said Lingerfelt. Clearing the way is a formidable offensive line. Bryce Hedrick will man the center position, while a mixture of Matthew Niblock, Elliott Springfield, Jordan Hill, Gary Hunt, Blake Simmons, Nathan Bundy, Taylor Booze and Jason Moore will rotate in at various positions on the line. When Warren does decide to throw, he has five main guys who can catch the ball and get up the field. Tyler Lequire, Brock Goodyear, Josh Craven, Justin Weavil and Dodd will all see time on the perimeter. Springfield will be a busy man, as he also heads up the defensive line. “We have him on both sides, so being in shape is going to be the key for him,” said Lingerfelt. “I told him he has six games to get in shape, but once we reach conference play he is going to have to be healthy and in shape.” His mates on the line will be Josh White, Zach Hunt, Booze, Moore and Zach Greely. At the outside linebacker positions will be Ray Tolley and Storm Stidham, while the inside is covered by Dylan Robison, Asa Bohannon and Justin Rutledge Weavil will hold down the free safety position and Justin Mounts, Jamar Harrington, Josh Craven and Troy Swicegood will man the corners. Mounts will do the punting and Warren will once again be the placekicker. The CCC could be one of the best leagues in the state with Lexington, Thomasville and Salisbury returning some big-time players from talented teams. “That is who we have to compete with and look at all the guys they have back, so it is going to be tough,” Lingerfelt said. “If we believe in ourselves and work hard, then I feel like we have a chance to compete.” kepley@tvilletimes.com | 888-3631
