HIGH POINT — The city’s leading medical center has provided care for patients from a time when modern medicine was in its infancy to a period today when cutting-edge cures heal the sick. Now, through its recent merger with UNC Health Care, the medical professionals at High Point Regional Health System prepare to keep caring for patients while keeping up with the fast-paced changes in medical care. High Point Regional officials are working with UNC Health Care on capital and construction plans, said Dr. Greg Taylor, chief operating officer with the health system. “We’ve actually begun some of those projects,” he said. The investment will include renovating operating rooms, expanding the hospital’s emergency department and performing renovations in the women’s unit, Taylor said. “We’ve gotten a lot of support from UNC on those projects. We’ve been working with them to look at opportunities with contracting, both through managed care and with our supply chain,” he said. While Taylor said that hospital officials don’t expect a major impact from the Affordable Care Act as it’s implemented in its initial year during 2014, the mammoth health insurance
THOMASVILLE — Since 1930, Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center has been a part of the Thomasville community. The original City Memorial Hospital of Thomasville opened its doors July 1930 with 31 beds. The hospital was organized by community leaders T.A. Finch, C.H. Phillips, Doak Finch, James R. Lambeth and A.H. Ragan. In 1934, the Nurses Home adjacent to the hospital was built. The medical center established programs for sleep disorders, heart and vascular, neurosciences, women’s health and behavioral health. In 2008, Thomasville Medical Center opened a $10 million emergency department and expanded the number of treatment rooms from 10 to 27. In January 2012, the new Women’s Center opened, featuring a new nursery, birthing suites and postpartum rooms to accommodate parents. program could bring big changes in the coming years. “Long term, we hope to see more insured patients,” Taylor said. Another health insurance issue that would affect High Point Regional in the coming years is any state government reform of Medicaid, the program that provides coverage to low-income people. “We all have our fingers crossed that the state will make some decision about expanding Medicaid that will be helpful to hospitals,” he said. “That’s both a gap in coverage for patients in North Carolina, and it’s a gap in revenue for health care providers, both hospitals and physicians.” The merger with UNC Health Care, announced in the fall of 2012 and completed in the spring of last year, was the first time that High Point Regional combined forces formally with another health care system since its founding in 1904. High Point Regional Health is a private, not-forprofit health care system with more than 2,300 staff, ranking it as one of the top employers in the city. The hospital, the main medical center for the city of High Point, offers 351 private beds for medical and surgical patients. The hospital serves more than 120,000 patients each year. High Point Regional Health System covers six primary service areas: Carolina Regional Heart Center, Hayworth Cancer Center, the Neuroscience Center, the Esther R. Culp Women’s Center, the Emergency Center and the Piedmont Joint Replacement Center. Other services offered through the health system include the Rehab Center, the Millis Regional Health Education Center, the Regional Wound Center, the Diabetes Self Care Management Center, the Vascular Center and High Point Behavioral Health. Another aspect of the health system is Regional Physicians, a group of multi-specialty medical practices. Regional Physicians is a wholly owned subsidiary of High Point Regional, serving residents in greater High Point, Asheboro, Jamestown, Thomasville, Lexington and southwest Greensboro. From its conception 10 years ago, Regional Physicians has grown from two doctors’ practices to 20 locations, representing 14 medical specialties. Cornerstone seeks growth opportunities By Paul B. Johnson STAFF WRITER
HIGH POINT — Nearly 20 years ago, a set of medical professionals came together to form a practice that has benefited the health of thousands of patients across the High Point area. Cornerstone Health Care now touches on nearly every major aspect of health care to adults and children through its network of general physicians and specialists. Cornerstone Health Care opened in 1995 as a group of 42 physicians in 15 practices. Today it has more than 375 physicians and advanced practice providers in more than 90 practices. Dr. John Walker, the chief medical and operating officer for Cornerstone Health Care, said it envisions further growth in its number of medical providers. “For the near term, we anticipate some future growth in both the number of physicians and advanced practice providers we have in our organization, specifically focusing on primary care,” Walker said. “But we’re also looking at growth in the specialty areas as well.” Cornerstone Health Care has ongoing conversations with other practices about merging with Cornerstone, Walker said. “Health care delivery is changing and becoming more complex. There are medical groups out there that are looking to Cornerstone to help them guide

HIGH POINT — Hop on High Point’s greenway for a walk, jog, bike ride or just to escape for a while into a little bit of nature. The 3.5-mile paved trail runs from Armstrong Park, just off E. Parkway Avenue, to University Park at Deep River Road. Vehicles are prohibited from the trail, parts of which run along creeks and streams. The city has built the greenway in phases over the years, but, until recently, the City Council has not approved completion of a continuous trail through High Point, leaving a onemile gap in the greenway system. That will change if the city this spring is awarded a state grant. The city is seeking up to $500,000 from the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, or PARTF, to assist with the long-planned but yet-to-be-built piece of the greenway from University Park to the Piedmont Environmental Center at Penny Road. The segment will connect High Point with Greensboro’s greenway system. The trail will travel through part of unincorporated Guilford County and connect with the Bicentennial Greenway near Jamestown. Development of this as a regional trail through the county was first proposed 25 years ago. Most of the Bicentennial Greenway runs through the city of Greensboro. To date, about 14 miles of the Bicentennial Greenway have been built. Only the remaining High Point piece is needed to provide for a continuous, 20-mile segment that connects the two cities. The greenway is one of the city’s amenities that has always ranked high in public surveys and other feedback showing its popularity. Several years ago, a comprehensive recreation master plan was developed for the city, and completion of the greenway was ranked as a high priority. City leaders now believe they have a way to pay for the final segment, which is expected to cost about $2.5 million. The city must match any state grant funds that are awarded for the project, which they plan to do with a portion of up to $6.1 million in two-thirds bonds the city will seek to issue later this year. The city is seeking the state’s approval to issue the bonds, which don’t require voter approval. State law allows local governments to borrow up to two-thirds the amount of general obligation bond debt paid off during the last fiscal year. The city retired $9.1 million in bond debt during 2012-13 and will seek $6.1 million in two-thirds bonds. In addition to the greenway, the city may use the funding to shore up part of an eroding railroad bank along Washington Street and for new sidewalk construction. pkimbrough@hpe.com | 888-3531

During the first two decades, programs centered on activities for boys, primarily swimming, soccer and other sports, club programs, Sunday school and teen programs, and were held at the corner of Main Street and Russell Avenue. service to men in the armed forces. After the war came a strong emphasis on Hi-Y, a club program for high school boys. The building was enlarged to include handball courts, a health club and two floors of residence rooms. As sports leagues became popular, the High Point YMCA traveled to Butler, Pa., in 1952 and won the national YMCA championship. The following year, the national tournament was held at the High Point YMCA, the first time it had ever been held in the South. The High Point team lost in the finals to a team from the Christian Street YMCA in Philadelphia. In 1942, a group of AfricanAmerican ministers petitioned the YMCA for a branch for African-American boys in the community. The Carl Chavis branch, named after the first black solider from High Point who died in World War II, began operation in 1944 on the second floor of a building on Washington Street. Early programs were table games, such as pool, Hi-Y and singing groups. In 1958, a new building was opened on Fourth Street. The Carl Chavis YMCA now operates in partnership with the High Point Housing Authority and operates a full service YMCA and five-star licensed child care center. The branch offers youth basketball, golf, baseball, soccer, flag football and cheerleading. It also offers a minority achievers program for students in high school, a dance program and a magazine program for youth. Adults can participate in fitness activities such as Zumba, aerobics and kettleball exercises. There is a basketball league at the center for adults 21 and older. Seniors can participate in a senior club or the SilverSneakers program. In 1957, plans were made for Camp Cheerio. The camp is located in Glade Valley and offers summer residential camping for children ages 7-15. During the four weeks of girls camp or the six weeks of co-ed camp, youth have the chance to participate in more than 35 different activities that help them explore and develop their potential. Daily activities include aquatics, challenge sports, field games, creative arts, nature studies,
carnival nights and capture the flag. Access to the Blue Ridge Mountains allow for day trips, including canoeing on the New River, going to Carowinds and climbing. By 1975, the YMCA had reorganized to a metropolitan structure, with a board of directors and branch board of management for the Hartley Drive, Carl Chavis and Cheerio Branches. The YMCA also began participating in United Way’s Big Brother/ Big Sister program. A capital campaign in 1977 resulted in $2.5 million being raised for the construction of a new building on the north side of High Point. A subsequent campaign in 1987 provided funds for additional construction at the Hartley Drive Family, Carl Chavis
and Cheerio Branches. The current Hartley Drive Family branch has a pool, swimming lessons, scuba lessons and a swim team. A fitness center and fitness programs are offered including indoor cycling, SilverSneakers, aerobics, Pilates and Zumba. The branch focuses on family by offering child care, summer camps, after-school camps, speciality summer camps, a youth and teen club, and a leader’s club. The Archdale- Trinity YMCA was chartered in 2005 and began with the merging of the local Little League baseball program, Guil-Rand Youth Soccer Association and summer day camp held at Trindale Community Church. A gift from Carl and Linda Grubb led to the construction of a 30,000-square-foot facility on N.C. 62, and the Carl and Linda Grubb Family YMCA opened in May 2010. The center has Wellness programs that include group workouts, personal training and fitness for kids. It offers an after-school club and summer camp for youth and SilverSneakers and luncheons for seniors. Sports for adults include men’s softball, co-ed volleyball, indoor and outdoor soccer. TRIAD — The Triad area is full of assisted living facilities for those who have loved ones that need constant care. Pennybyrn at Maryfield Pennybyrn at Maryfield is a continuing care retirement community and has a Culture of Caring model where residents live in neighborhoods, receive the level of service most appropriate for their care needs and enjoy a high quality of life. The governing organization, Maryfield Inc., is a nonprofit corporation founded by the Sisters of the Poor Servants of the Mother of God. The sisters dreamed of coming to America due to the support and kindness shown to them by the American soldiers in Europe during World War II. They began operating Maryfield, a 22-bed Catholic nursing home in 1947. Pennybyrn is composed of three distinct neighborhoods: independent living neighborhood, Taylor Village Assisted Living Neighborhood and Maryfield Health Care Households neighborhood. The retirement community is for men and women 62 and older. The facility sits on 71 acres in northeast High Point near Jamestown. The facility has an Irish pub, heated swimming pool, fitness program and exercise classes, and offers a golf membership to Jamestown Park Golf Course, a putting green, library and computer lab, an arts and crafts studio and a woodworking shop. There are three chapels on the campus, and the facility offers walking trails, a beauty and barber salon, mail and communications center, a full-service bank, guest suites and a billiards room. neighborhood, residents are supported in daily activities by licensed nurses and certified nurse assistants that are available 24 hours a day. Maryfield Health Care Households have furnished bedrooms for residents in a nursing home environment. Nurses make sure residents have health care education, nutrition therapy, rehabilitation, and 24-hour security and emergency care. River Landing at Sandy Ridge River Landing at Sandy Ridge is a Presbyterian Home located in north High Point. It opened in High Point in 1952, and was such a success through the years, organizers decided to open an additional retirement community — River Landing at Sandy Ridge, which opened its doors in January 2003. River Landing offers assisted living and memory care, as well as intermediate and skilled nursing. It also offers shortterm physical, occupational and speech therapy and rehabilitation. There is a nursing emergency response team available 24 hours a day. Amenities at the facility include a Wellness Center, a Fitness Studio, an Aquatic Center, weight room, a par 36 9-hole golf course,
a putting green, a tennis court, a croquet lawn, fishing ponds and walking trails. The facility offers fine dining, a 1950s cafe and private dining for residents. Residents have access to a library, a full-service bank, a post office, transportation, a gift shop and convenience store, a woodworking shop, a computer lab, an arts and crafts studio, a hair salon and barber shop, a medical clinic, and a billiards room. Shannon Gray The Shannon Gray Rehabilitation and Recovery Center opened its doors in April 2010. The facility, formerly Evergreens, spans 8 acres and is located in Jamestown. It has 150 licensed Medicare/ Medicaid beds. There are four communities named after the four regions of the state: the Heartland, the Sandhills, the Crystal Coast and the Highlands. Every hallway and every congregate area has an individual name, including local historical names such as Mendenhall, Guilford and Sedgefield. Services include private dining, recreation areas, on-site hair care, full-time registered nurses on site 24 hours a day, oxygen therapy, IV antibiotics, wound care, a full-time social
worker, resident transpiration, dietitian, and a medical director. It has physical, occupational and speech therapists, and an in-group pool with a treadmill for physical rehabilitation services located on 1,700-square-feet of space. Providence Place Providence Place has been open since 1978 and its campus includes the Westchester Village independent living facility and the Westchester Manor Health and Rehabilitation Center skilled nursing facility. The independent living facility offers staff on site 24 hours a day. Small pets are welcome, and the cost includes all utilities and basic cable. The Westchester Harbour is an assisted living facility on the campus that offers a Memory Care Center that provides therapeutic care for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. There is on-site physical therapy and certified activities personnel on staff. The skilled nursing facility has no more than 22 residents per hall. Private insurance residents are welcome, and the facility is Medicare/ Medicaid certified. There is a beauty salon on site, a dining room on every floor, and a recreational therapist.
