Vote for the Arts The arts create jobs, generate tax revenues, educate students, revitalize communities and enhance our quality of life. So, during this election season be sure that you cast your votes for candidates that have an arts platform! This past June, the two united arts councils in Guilford County jointly announced results of new research showing that the nonprofit arts and culture industry generates more than $118 million dollars annually in Guilford County - with $11.3 million dollars in local and state government revenues - and supporting 4,269 full-time equivalent jobs. Called Arts & Economic Prosperity IV, the yearlong study was led by Americans for the Arts in partnership with 182 study regions that encompassed all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Study figures were derived from audience and organizational surveys. In Guilford County, 59 of the approximately

Generating $5.4 million in local government revenue, the arts are a good investment for our cities and county.” In addition to spending by arts organizations, the nonprofit arts and culture industry in Guilford County is a primary factor in determining quality of life. Though there is no scale to measure quality of life, a robust nonprofit arts industry that generates $71.7 million dollars in event-related spending by its audiences speaks to the quality and quantity of events our community affords.

High Point Theatre Announces 2012-2013 Season Schedule features Grammy-winning musicians, comedy, magic, animals, Nuns and a spectacular musical revue.

riad live-entertainment mavens know they can always count on the High Point Theatre to deliver a one-of-akind experience. Featuring wellloved and critically acclaimed musicians, side-splitting comedies, an awe-inspiring young magician and an up-close encounter with the ever-popular people and animals of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, the 2012-13 season sets up as nothing short of sensational. It all kicks off on Friday, October 19, when master song-crafters Janis Ian and Tom Paxton take the stage to delight and enchant with some of the most deeply felt and honest music of our day. Ian enjoyed considerable commercial success in the 1970s, while Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award recipient Paxton’s 50-year career as a singer-songwriter has produced a number of modern standards. Together, they produce an emotional and thought-provoking musical tour de force that you’re sure to recall for many years to come. On Sunday, October 21, Nunset Boulevard featuring Cindy Williams, the lovable star of TV’s “Laverne & Shirley,” will head up the “nunsensical” adventures of The Little Sisters of Hoboken as they head off to Tinseltown to perform at the famous Hollywood Bowl. November 3 brings a live encounter with Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. Presented by the show’s cohost, Peter Gros, this fascinating event includes live animals, fun film clips and hands-on audience
participation. Then, on November 17, the first half of the season closes in fine style as Grammywinning singer/songwriter Nanci Griffith comes to town to perform some of her well-loved country classics. Magic’s Royal Duke Sammy Cortino, opens up the New Year on January 12. Incorporating classic illusions with drama, music and comedy, this up-andcoming young prestidigitator puts on a dazzling show for the whole family to enjoy. On January 25, The Water Coolers, in something of a cross between “The Capitol Steps” and TV’s “Whose Line Is It, Anyway?” serves up a selection of hilarious bits based on the craziness of everyday life and parodies of popular songs. Jazz lovers will be in for a real treat on Saturday, February 9, when the Birdland Big Band presents “Live at Birdland.” Directed by Tommy Igoe, this musical event sets the standard for the 21st-century jazz orchestra. For a perfect Valentine’s Day date night, check out The Best of Broadway: You Raise Me Up! on Thursday, February 14. An optional dinner package will also be available before the show to provide for the ultimate romantic evening with your beloved! April’s musical excursion brings the Ninety Miles Project on Saturday, April 6. Six Violinists and One Great Season By David L. Nelson This year’s Masterworks concert series is entitled “A Season of Violinists”. All six concerts will feature wonderful soloists who will perform five of the classical violin concerti. Why not six classical concerti? That needs a little explanation which I will do in a few paragraphs. Our own Dima Sitkovetsky will “lead off” the season with the Brahms Violin Concerto. Dima has quite a history with it, and recently wrote, “I won the first Fritz Kreisler Competition in Vienna in 1979 playing this concerto and my international career was launched with a world-wide TV-broadcast of it. It’ll be the 1st time I’ll be playing it in Greensboro.” The rest of the concert is all music from Vienna including the “Blue
Danube” Waltz. And if Dima playing the Brahms concerto in Greensboro for the first time is not enough of a special occasion, then the date of the opening concert should be. September 27 is also Dima’s birthday. He told me he was going to be 29, but I don’t think I should believe him. Tchaikovsky Competition Winner Headlining the November concerts will be Mayuko Kamio, a Japanese violinist who won the gold medal in the 2007 Tchaikovsky Competition. She will perform Antonin Dvoák’s rhythmic and energetic Violin Concerto. The concerto will be sandwiched between dances – one of Dvoák’s Slavonic Dances will precede it and
Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances will follow it. Lovers of the opera “Carmen” will get their fill of this spicy and expressive music in the January concerts. Our guest violinist, Elizabeth Basoff-Darskaya, will play Pablo de Sarasate’s virtuoso Carmen Fantasy, and the orchestra will play the Nocturne from the opera and the Carmen Suite for Strings and Percussion. A friend of Dima, Rodion Shchedrin created this latter piece. Says Dima, “He’s written many pieces for me both as a violinist and conductor, so I am very happy to introduce his masterpiece ‘Carmen- Suite’ in the January program”. Chairman Mao Dances?

The next concerts feature American music, and Greensboro’s own Stefani Collins will perform Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto. The concert also has music of Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, and Pulitzer Prize winning John Adams. The piece by this last composer is entitled “The Chairman Dances”: the “chairman” is Mao and the music is from his opera “Nixon in China”.
To close the season, Dima has created a unique collage of movements from different Beethoven symphonies. Dima explains, “Since I just closed my ninth season with his great Ninth Symphony, I thought it would be fun to compose a ‘Tenth’ Beethoven Symphony made of four of my favorite movements from four different symphonies.”

Perhaps the best known of all violin concerti is the Mendelssohn Concerto, and Dima’s cousin Alexander will perform this in the final masterworks concerts in May. The Sitkovetskys will both take their violins for a special performance of Bach’s “Double Concerto”.

Violinist Aleksey Igudesman and pianist Hyung-Ki Joo met a number of years ago when they were both students at the Yehudi Menuhin School in England. The North Carolina Shakespeare Festival is 35 years old and more energetic than ever. Founded in 1977 in High Point, NCShakes is bursting at the seams at Spirit Center, the renovated factory that the professional theatre company has used as production and administrative headquarters since 2007. Since summer of 2011, NCShakes has grown to 20 staff members and can now present even more entertaining and educational programs.

In September, NCShakes returns to the High Point Theatre to present a MainStage Shakespeare production – the classic Romeo and Juliet – and the 35th production of the much-loved A Christmas Carol. In the spring, the popular Shakespeare To Go educational tour will travel throughout North Carolina to teach the written, spoken and performed words of Shakespeare. Meanwhile, the new Final Friday series takes place on the last Friday of each month at Spirit Center, offering low-cost, unique entertainment. In April, NCShakes will again partner with Duke University’s John Brown to perform Such Sweet Thunder, a jazz suite composed by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn inspired by works of Shakespeare. Festival Stage of Winston-Salem is an affiliate of NCShakes entering its third season. Festival Stage shares Spirit Center with NCShakes, but focuses on more contemporary plays and performs at downtown Winston-Salem’s new black-box Hanesbrands Theatre. Festival Stage opens its season with the Tony Award-winning comedy-drama The Last Night of Ballyhoo, set in Atlanta in 1939 on the eve of the Gone With the Wind premiere as well as World War II. In January, Festival Stage partners with Wake Forest University’s Department of Theatre Studies to present 33 Variations, which opened on Broadway in 2009 – only the second North Carolina production of the play. The season closes with the crackling mystery-drama Proof, a smash hit on Broadway that won both the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize. Festival Stage will also hold the 2nd Annual Jacks & Jokers Casino Night on Jan. 18 at the Millennium Center.
