Overview This document will explain how to calculate the Data Reduction Ratio on a HPE 3PAR array using the SSMC, CLI, and HPE InfoSight. More detailed information about HPE 3PAR data reduction can be found in the HPE 3PAR Adaptive Data Reduction white paper.
HPE 3PAR capacity efficiency terms First, it is important to understand the following terms about the way capacity efficiency is displayed on a HPE 3PAR system: • The Compaction ratio shows the data reduction for the entire array. This includes thin provisioning, snapshots, deduplication, and compression. The Compaction ratio is calculated as the sum of the virtual sizes of all the volumes and snapshots in the system divided by the sum of their in-use data space, snapshot space, and used Dedup Store space (DDS). • The Data Reduction Ratio shows the data reduction with deduplication and compression only. It does not included thin provisioning or snapshots. It is calculated as the sum of all the data written to any volume that is deduplicated and/or compressed divided by the sum of the data stored in the volumes and the data associated with the volumes in the Dedup Store. Note that unlike some other storage vendors, HPE 3PAR considers zero detection to be part of thin provisioning and therefore not part of our data reduction.
Calculations for the Global System Data Reduction Ratio In this section we will show how to look at the Data Reduction Ratio of the entire array.
StoreServ Management Console (SSMC) From the SSMC, choose “Systems” from the main menu and then select “Capacity Savings” from the drop-down. The Compaction ratio shows the data reduction for the entire array while the Data Reduction Ratio shows the data reduction with deduplication and compression only.

In this case, this system has a 3.5:1 overall Data Reduction Ratio. The data reduction due to deduplication and compression only is 1.4:1. Note that it is not possible to derive the Data Reduction Ratio by multiplying the compression and deduplication ratios. Also, note that the thin provisioning ratio displayed here includes the space savings from snapshots.

HPE InfoSight It is possible to show the overall data reduction including compression, deduplication, thin provisioning, and snapshots for a HPE 3PAR system in the HPE InfoSight portal. However, there is no way to show the data reduction with only deduplication and compression. You will need to use the SSMC or the CLI for this calculation. From the HPE InfoSight portal, select the Overview drop-down. Scrolling down will bring you to the Capacity Efficiency section where you can see the overall data reduction for the array. In the example below, the overall Data Reduction Ratio is 10:1.

HPE 3PAR CLI In the HPE 3PAR CLI, the showsys -space command shows the data reduction for the entire array. The Capacity Efficiency is shown at the bottom of the output: m2-tme20450 cli% showsys -space ------------ System Capacity (MiB) -----------Total Capacity

Showing Data Reduction per CPG In this section we will show how to look at the Data Reduction Ratio on a per-CPG basis.
StoreServ Management Console (SSMC) The data reduction for a HPE 3PAR Common Provisioning Group (CPG) can be seen in the SSMC by selecting Common Provisioning Groups from the main menu and selecting Overview from the drop-down. In the figure below, this CPG has a 5.5:1 overall compaction ratio which includes the savings from deduplication, compression, thin provisioning, and snapshots. The data reduction due to deduplication and compression only is 2.4:1.
Figure 3. SSMC view of the Capacity Savings for an individual CPG
HPE InfoSight It is not possible to view the space savings for an individual CPG in HPE InfoSight. You will need to use the SSMC or the CLI for this calculation.

HPE 3PAR CLI In the HPE 3PAR CLI, the showcpg -space command shows the compaction and data reduction for an individual CPG. In the example below, there are five CPGs named CPG1 to CPG5. The total line at the bottom shows the capacity efficiency for the HPE 3PAR system as a whole and should match the results from showsys -space:
