LIVING CONDITIONS IN GREECE

FOREWORD
With the publication Living Conditions in Greece, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) provides to users significant statistical data reflecting living conditions in Greece, concentrated in one publication.
The publication includes data concerning a wide range of factors (labour, health, education, technology, etc.) that affect living conditions, as well as data on the quality of life, such as poverty and social exclusion. This publication presents statistical time series compiled mainly by ELSTAT, but also comparative tables with other European Union countries on selected social indicators.
Written in Greek and English, this publication is aimed at users looking for an update concerning recent social developments, but also long-term social trends. The publication will be updated the first Friday of January, March, May, July, September and November with the most recently available statistical data.
For further information on the data and statistics provided in Living Conditions in Greece, please contact the Division of Statistical Information and Publications of ELSTAT (tel: +30 213 135 2317, e-mail: data.dissem@statistics.gr).
We welcome any suggestions on the content of the publication.

(1) For the years up to 2017, the data source on divorces was the Courts of First Instance and data from final divorce decisions were collected. As of 2018 onwards, the data source is the Ministry of Interior and data from divorces by mutual consent (dissolution of marriage by notarial act) and contested divorces (irrevocable court decisions, i.e., which cannot be contested by legal action) are collected. The available variables collected are: type of divorce, sex and age of the divorced, duration and type of marriage (religious - civil), Region of usual residence. Data on the reasons of divorce and the party against whom the divorce was issued are no longer available. Due to these changes, data from 2018 onwards are not fully comparable with data up to 2017.
(2) The decrease in the number of divorces is due to the abstention of lawyers during the 1st semester of the year.

(2) Population at risk of poverty or social exclusion (revised definition): population at risk of poverty or with material and social deprivation (i.e.,
of the population experiencing an enforced lack of at least 7 out of 13 deprivation items) or living in households
The at-risk-of-poverty rate after social transfers is the share of persons living in households where the total equivalised disposable income is below the at-risk-of-poverty threshold, i.e., lower than 60% of the national median equivalised disposable income (median income means the income in the middle of the distribution).
The equivalised individual disposable income is the total disposable income of a household divided by the equivalised household size. The equivalised household size is calculated using a standard equivalence scale, called the modified OECD scale. This scale gives a weight to all members of the household: 1.0 to the first adult; 0.5 to the second adult and each subsequent person aged 14 years and over; 0.3 to each child aged under 14 years. For example: the income of a household with 2 adults and 2 children under the age of 14 years is divided by 1+ 0.5 + (2 x 0.3) = 2.1. Accordingly, the income of a household with 2 adults is divided by 1+ 0.5 = 1.5 and the income of a household with 2 adults and 2 children aged 14 years and over is divided by 1+ 0.5 + (2 x 0.5) = 2.5, etc.
Social transfers include social assistance (i.e., the social solidarity allowance for pensioners, the lump sum payments to support poor households in mountainous and disadvantageous areas, allowances to long-term unemployed aged 45 - 65 years, etc.) and the allowances such as family / children-related allowances, unemployment, sickness, disability / invalidity benefits, as well as education - related allowances.
Source: Population, Employment and Cost of Living Statistics Division ELSTAT. (1) Material and social deprivation rate (EU 2030 Target) measures the percentage of the population experiencing an enforced lack of at
7 of 13 deprivation items and services related to the household and 6 related to the individual, due to incapacity to:
Household level
- being confronted with payment arrears (on mortgage or rental payments, utility bills, hire purchase instalments),
- afford paying for one-week annual holiday,
- afford a meal with meat, chicken, fish or vegetarian equivalent, every second day,
- to face unexpected expenses,
- have access to a car/van for personal use,
- keep home adequately warm in winter and cool in summer,
- replace worn-out or destroyed furniture,
Individual level
- internet access
- worn-out clothes by new ones,
- two pairs of properly fitting shoes (including a pair of all-weather shoes),
- a small amount of money each week on himself/herself,
- together with friends/family for a drink/meal at least once a month,
- having regular leisure activities.

(1)People living in households with very low work intensity (EU 2030): share of population aged 18 - 64 years living in households where the working-age members worked less than 20% of their total work potential during the past year. The work intensity of the household is the ratio of the total number of months that all working-age household members have worked, during the income reference year, and the total number of months the same household members could theoretically have worked during the same period. A working-age person is a person aged 18 - 64 years, excluding students in the age group 18 - 24 years. Households which consist only of children, of students aged less than 25 years and or people aged 64 years or more are excluded from the indicator calculation.

A person is considered as living in an overcrowded household, if the household does not have at its disposal a minimum of rooms equals to: - one room for the household, - one room for each couple, - one room for each single person aged 18 years and over, - one room for two single persons of the same sex aged 12 - 17 years, - one room for each single person of different sex aged 12 - 17 years,

(2) The income quintile share ratio or the S80/S20 ratio is a measure of the inequality of income distribution. It is calculated as the ratio of total equivalised disposable income received by the 20% of the country’s population with the highest equivalised disposable income to that received by the 20% of the country’s population with the lowest equivalised disposable income. In other words, it compares the income share of the richest 20% of the population with that of the poorest 20% of the population.
(3) The Gini coefficient is defined as the relationship of cumulative shares of the population arranged according to the level of equivalised disposable income to the cumulative share of the total equivalised disposable income received by them. If there was
(i.e.
the same income) the Gini coefficient would be 0%. A Gini coefficient of 100% indicates that there is total income
and the
is in the hands of 1 person. For example, a Gini coefficient of 30% means that choosing randomly 2 persons, the difference between their
is at 30% of the mean income.

(1) School expectancy corresponds to the expected years of education over a lifetime and has been calculated adding the single-year enrolment rates for all ages from the age of 5 years and over. To illustrate the meaning of school expectancy, let us take an example: school expectancy for the age of 10 would be 1 year, if all 10-year-old students (in the year of the data collection) were enrolled. If only 50 % of 10-year-old students were enrolled, school expectancy for the age of 10 would be half a year.

a) creation of new museums,
b) declaration of new sites as archaelogical ones,
c) temporary cessation of operation of museums or archaeological sites, due to maintenance or restoration works, etc.,
d) temporary cessation of operation of some small local museums, due to the lack of personnel or more generally of funding for covering their operational expenditures.
