As a teacher she tried to pass on her love of reading to her students (and discovered that the secret to successful teaching is… stickers! She is aware that that is, essentially, bribery.) Her work has appeared in Guernica, The Minnesota Review, Day One, and elsewhere. She was also a finalist in Glimmer Train‘s Short Story Award for New Writers. She has an MFA from the University of New Mexico and currently lives in Los Angeles with her wife and their dog Whiskey.
Big Burr, Kansas is the kind of place where everyone seems to know everyone – or so they think. But when a national non-profit labels Big Burr "the most homophobic town in the US and sends in a queer task force to live and work there for two years, no one is prepared for what will ensue. Still grieving the death of her son, Linda welcomes the newcomers, who know mercifully little about her past. Teenage Avery, furious at being uprooted from her life in LA and desperate to fit in at her new high school, fears it's only a matter of time before her classmates discover her mom is the head of the task force. And Gabe, an avid hunter who has lived in Big Burr his whole life, suddenly feels as if he's in the crosshairs. As tensions roil the town, cratering relationships and bringing difficult truths to light, both long time residents and new arrivals must reconsider what it means to belong. Told with warmth and wit, Under the Rainbow is a poignant, hopeful articulation of our complicated humanity and the ways we can learn to live with each other and ourselves. ‘Intimate and psychologically keen…Laskey’s vision of inclusion is all-encompassing.’ Los Angeles Times ‘Under the Rainbow will ring true for a wide audience, regardless of gender expression and sexuality, for its wry humor and universal truths.’ Lambda Literary ‘A timely look into what it means to be queer in spaces that aggressively refuse you. Smart and compulsively readable, Laskey has woven together narratives that seek to embrace each other through the hurt…Laskey is a talented, sharp writer and her debut novel has its fingers on the pulse of the human condition.’ Kristen Arnett, author of The New York Times-bestseller Mostly Dead Things ‘An an excellent, big-hearted, and very funny novel about our contemporary divisions and grievances. Under the Rainbow is wonderfully current, yet it refuses to sacrifice love or empathy to politics, it refuses despair and destruction.’ Shannon Pufahl, author of On Swift Horses ‘Under the Rainbow marks the arrival of a wildly talented, observant, political, feminist writer to the literary ranks. Celia Laskey is a true original, and she’s here to stay.’ Emily Rapp Black, The New York Times-bestselling author of The Still Point of the Turning World ‘Laskey inhabits each of these characters with skill and grace in a tour de force of first-person narration…Energetic and compelling, a promising first book from a writer to watch.’ Kirkus Reviews

LINDA FINLAY lives on the Devonshire coast and is the author of ten novels. From lacemaking to willow weaving, each one is based on a local craft which, in order to write authentically and place herself firmly in the shoes of her heroines, she has learnt to do herself. However, it is people and their problems that make for a good story and, with so much interesting material to work with, it is easy for Linda to let her imagination run as wild as the West Country landscape which has inspired her writing.
The Sunday Times No.1 bestselling author Dilly Court says Linda Finlay’s books are ‘sure to delight’! Nettlecombe Manor, nestled in the rolling hills of Devon, is home to the Lord Farringdon and his second wife, Lady Charlotte. As if running the vast estate wasn’t enough, Lord Farringdon has five daughters to keep him busy. Lady Charlotte is determined that the betrothal of the eldest, Louisa, should be celebrated with a ball which is the envy of Devon society and summons a corsetiere from Exeter to measure them up for new corsets. Apprentice Jane Haydon arrives at Nettlecombe to do the fittings. Having never set foot in such a grand home, Jane is disturbed to hear tell of a gipsy’s curse which has haunted the family for generations, and a local wise woman’s vision that there will never be a wedding at Nettlecombe… Linda Finlay returns with this glorious tale set in the West Country. HCUET not-US Biography and autobiography General
Ed Jackson is an English former professional rugby union player who played for a number of sides in England and Wales, including Bath and London Wasps. He represented England and captained both U16 and U18 teams before his career was cut short through a life-changing spinal injury. After his recovery, Ed has set up a charity focused events company, Millimetres to Mountains, which raises money for various causes. Ed adds to his busy schedule by working as a reporter for Channel 4’s rugby coverage. He will also be one of the key presenters for Channel 4’s coverage of the Paralympics.
At 27, professional rugby player Ed Jackson was told he would never walk again. A freak accident, involving a swimming pool and a miscalculated dive, broke his neck and crushed his spinal cord. Jackson had to be resuscitated three times and spent weeks in intensive care – for the first of those, he couldn’t so much as twitch a muscle. But three years on from the accident, Jackson’s recovery is nothing short of miraculous. Defying the predictions of even the most optimistic specialists, the former London Wasps and Bath man has not only learned to walk again, he’s found a new calling: mountaineering. Ed focused on regaining millimetres of movement in his toe and set himself the task of summiting Mount Snowden. One year on from his accident, Ed defied medical opinion and achieved his goal. His triumph inspired him to prove that he had plenty more still to give. Ed set himself his greatest challenge of all: to fund a spinal unit in Kathmandu by climbing the huge Mera Peak – one of the tallest mountains in Nepal. Part autobiography, part personal development, LUCKY is Ed Jackson’s story of how he overcame adversity and coped with massive change – and how you can too.

‘I invite you to be courageous and get comfortable with being uncomfortable, because any discomfort you feel is temporary and pales in comparison to what black and brown people often have to experience on a daily basis. Are you ready? Let’s get started, we have work to do.’ With social injustices rising in frequency, and an increase in far-right movements around the world, the rise in hate against “the other” is palpable. There is an urgent need to change so that we no longer repeat patterns of behaviour that have led us to where we are. The Good Ally is the answer to ‘what next?’ It’s a book for those wanting to become better allies, for those who are hungry to expand their knowledge and understanding of systematic racism, for those who not only want to be able to better recognise both subtle and overt forms of racism in action, but who want to know what to do about it. Full of punch, humour and hope, and packed with examples and anecdotes – some toe-curling, some blood-boiling – The Good Ally will help us unpick the myriad issues getting in the way of better inclusion, and will shows us how – with a bit of self-interrogation and a lot of courage – we can weaponise our privilege and be part of a powerful change. “You are not only leading the change Nova, you ARE the change. You have challenged my own bias, made me question my actions, and made me a better person. Thank you for your endless work in this area. You are changing the world and you are helping people like me change mine.” – Diversity Awards Nomination (anonymous)

When her father finds fame with a series of children’s books starring her as the main character, everything changes: exotic foods appear on the table, her father appears on TV, and strangers appear at their door, convinced the books contain a treasure hunt leading to a glittering prize. But as time passes, Romilly’s father becomes increasingly suspicious of everything around him, until, before her eyes, he begins to disappear altogether. In her increasingly isolated world, Romilly turns to the secrets her father has hidden in his illustrated books, realising that there is something far darker and more devastating locked within the pages… The truth. The Illustrated Child is the unforgettable, beguiling debut from Polly Crosby. From the creator of the BBC One hit TV series, Death in Paradise To solve an impossible murder, you need an impossible hero… Judith Potts is seventy-seven years old and blissfully happy. She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper. One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. The local police don’t believe her story, so she decides to investigate for herself, and is soon joined in her quest by Suzie, a salt-of-the-earth dog-walker, and Becks, the prim and proper wife of the local Vicar. Caroline Dooner is the creator of The Fuck It Diet, which helps chronic, lifelong dieters finally have an easy relationship with food. She is a writer, storyteller, performer and yoga teacher (who mostly just teaches resting). Entertaining and brutally honest, Dooner has been where her readers and clients are now. She suffered through over a decade of obsessive, miserable dieting and bingeing. She tried every fad diet, every version of intuitive eating, but remained scared of food, her appetite, and her weight. It was her own deep misery and dysfunction that made her investigate, research, and create another way.
The anti-diet bible that calls time’s up to poisonous beliefs about food, weight and worth. DIETING DOESN’T WORK Not long term. In fact, our bodies are hardwired against it. But each time our diets fail, instead of considering that maybe our ridiculously low-carb diet is the problem, we wonder what’s wrong with us. But it’s time we called a spade a spade: Constantly trying to eat the smallest amount possible is a miserable way to live, and it isn’t even working. So f*ck it. Caroline Dooner tackles the inherent flaws of dieting and diet culture, and offers readers a simple path to healing their physical, emotional, and mental relationship with food. What’s the secret antidiet? Eat. Whatever you want. Trust that your body knows what it is doing. Oh, and don’t forget to rest, breathe, and be kind to yourself. Irreverent and empowering, The F*ck It Diet is call to arms for anyone who feels guilt or pain over food, weight, or their body. It’s time to give up the shame and start thriving. Welcome to the F*ck It Diet. Let’s Eat. ‘The F*ck It Diet is not only hilarious, it is scientifically and medically sound. A must read for any chronic dieter.’ Christiane Northrup, MD, New York Times bestselling author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom ‘There is only one Caroline Dooner. She is funny and wise and unafraid to call bullshit where she sees it. And diet culture is nothing but bullshit. That's why we're lucky to have someone like her, reminding us all that it is possible to break the diet cycle — and while it may be hard, it's not necessarily complicated. Sometimes it really is as simple as saying, 'f*ck it.’ Kelsey Miller, author of Big Girl: How I Gave Up Dieting and Got a Life

Anna Wilson read French and German at Cambridge University. She is a writer and went into a career in children’s publishing.
• In the vein of DADLAND and THE LIFE OF STUFF, this also deals with our rediscovery of our parents as adults when we start to care for them, and the challenges this brings.
‘Painful, raw and with an honesty that rings clear as a bell’ Catherine Simpson, author of When I Had a Little Sister A searing account of a mother’s late-diagnosis of autism – and its reaching effects on a whole family. Anna grew up in a house that was loving, even if her mum was ‘a little eccentric’. They knew to keep things clean, to stay quiet, and to look the other way when things started to get ‘a bit much for your mum’. It’s only when her mother reaches her 70s, and Anna has a family of her own, that the cracks really start to appear. More manic. More irrational. More detached from the world. And when her father, the man who has calmed and cajoled her mother through her entire life is diagnosed with cancer, the whole world turns upside down. This is a story of a life lived with undiagnosed Aspergers, about the person behind the disorder, those big unspoken family truths, and what it means to care for our parents in their final years. ‘[A] vividly told and profoundly affecting memoir’ The Bookseller ‘A brilliant, searing account and I defy anyone not to be gripped by it.’ Sally Magnusson 'I read A Place for Everything with my heart in my mouth, gripped by this howl of anguish about loving someone you cannot help. This is both a love story and a horror story; an unforgettable account of a daughter going into battle to try to save her mother and father, and the toll it took. Painful, raw and with an honesty that rings clear as a bell. This is a beautiful book and an important one.' Catherine Simpson, author of When I Had a Little Sister ‘You don’t have to have a connection to autism to find much to – enjoy perhaps isn’t the right word – that you can relate to in this book because it’s largely about the business of caring for your elderly parents when you are a woman who might have a whole shedload of other responsibilities.’ Jane Garvey, Woman’s Hour. ‘The last decade of life is the new frontier for the diagnosis of autism – brought home to us in this captivating story.’ Professor Tony Attwood, clinical psychologist ‘A very moving read’ My Weekly ‘In this extraordinary memoir Anna tells the story of what it was like for her and her sister to be raised by a woman struggling with undiagnosed high-functioning autism. This is an important story filled with compassion, and one that I hope will be read by anyone who has endured a difficult relationship with either parent.’ Isabel Losada, author of The Joyful Environmentalist ‘[Anna]’s book is one of the best memoirs I've read in a long time. I loved it. It's raw, honest, gripping . . . and very moving. The book will be helpful for people who have family members with undiagnosed autism.’ James Cook, author of In Her Room – How Music Helped Me Connect with my Autistic Daughter HarperCollins Publishers, Westerhill Road, Glasgow G64 2QT. ‘Sarah Cruddas is a gifted writer and Look Up is an inspired book. I am hopeful that we will never stop looking up.’ Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins Most of us have never been to space. To date, of the more than 100 billion humans that have ever existed, fewer than 600 humans have ever left Earth. But the exploration of space is the most significant thing we will ever do as a species. Sarah Cruddas has been looking to the skies her entire life. Her childhood was spent staring at the Moon and hearing stories of the space race, and she worked in a fruit factory to fund her love of the subject. Her subsequent career studying astrophysics, and becoming a television host and space journalist has seen her report on space exploration and chase launches across the world. In Look Up Sarah explains why she has always been a passionate advocate for why space should matter – to everyone. From our ancestors who first painted patterns of the stars in caves, to the US and Soviet pioneers who first forged a path beyond our planet, Sarah Cruddas explores the stories and sacrifices that humankind has made to understand more about our place in the universe. And even today, when Moon walking and people in space suits seem less relevant to us than climate change and conflicts here on Earth, she shows how everything from medicine to mobile phones is affected by space technology, and how a new generation of entrepreneurs have kick-started a new story with the stars. This is an inspirational and enlightening introduction to the importance of space to everyone, and why we should all learn to Look Up. ‘Sarah Cruddas is a gifted writer and Look Up is an inspired book. Mary Poppins is a story of taking practical steps towards happiness. It’s looking at the bright side of life. It’s setting boundaries, deciding what you want and making it happen. That’s the path to being Practically Perfect For comedian Katy Brand, part of the joy of watching Mary Poppins as a child was the thrill of the film’s iconic, no-nonsense heroine. Her unshakeable confidence, her staunch independence, and that touch of magic. Now she’s all grown up, Katy takes another look beyond the talking umbrellas, bottomless bags and dubious cockney accents to show that Mary’s still got something to teach us. She explores how the beloved nanny was brought to life from the page to the big screen, and delves into her most striking memories to uncover themes that are still as important now as they were at the time, from women’s rights and poverty, to toxic masculinity and work-life balance. With interviews and insights from famous fans and friends, Practically Perfect is the common-sense manual for life that we never knew we needed, and sprinkles some supercalifragilistic magic along the way. ‘Katy Brand reveals the teachings of Mary Poppins and how we can learn from her lessons to live better lives.' Kate Lucey is an experienced digital journalist, public speaker, and panel mediator and has worked with brands from Cosmopolitan to The Sunday Times Style to advise on how to effectively talk to millennials. She regularly writes about mental health for a range of publications and is currently living in Paris. Get a Grip, Love is her first book.
• Mental health writing continues to be a trend. The enduring popularity of Bryony Gordon, Matt Haig, Dolly Alderton and others shows an appetite for relatable stories around this subject. • Kate Lucey is a well-connected journalist. She was ex-editor of Sugarscape.com and Cosmo. co.uk, and is now a freelance editor writing for, among others, Sunday Times Magazine, XXX, and has a regular column as the mental health writer on the Metro.
'Clever, kind, funny and wise, this book is an uplifting and useful addition to your self help library.’ Daisy Buchanan, How to Be a Grown-Up We’re all talking about mental health a lot more now than we were ten years ago, which is great . . . isn’t it? Kate Lucey has been ‘officially’ depressed (as in, diagnosed) for six years. In that time she’s experienced everything from bad therapy, knock-out meds, and friends-with-too-many-opinions, to good therapy, medication, and solutions that actually work. This book recognises that getting help is not as easy as ‘just telling someone’ or ‘taking some pills’. It weaves real peoples’ experiences of depression with the opinions of actual qualified experts and facts from scientific studies to create a no-nonsense guide to mental health. Funny, irreverent, and relatable, Get a Grip, Love also tells you what to say to those mates who fancy themselves as amateur psychologists, and speaks honestly about how it feels to live with a mental health disorder. Crucially, as well as poking fun at mental illness and all its absurdities (because what are we without laughter, hey?), Kate reminds you that it’s fine not to feel ok. That you can go back to crying at any time. And that you do not need to get a grip. 'Clever, kind, funny and wise, this book is an uplifting and useful addition to your self help library. Kate's voice is such a big, positive part of the evolving mental health conversation. This book made me feel like I could actually survive 2020. It's brilliant.' Daisy Buchanan, How to Be a Grown-Up ‘In her wittily titled no-nonsense guide to mental health, [Kate] writes about her experiences of depression with insight, honesty and even humour.’ i News ‘A quirky, candid memoir … This will have huge appeal to anyone who feels they’re at rock bottom; it will also enlighten their friends.’ Evening Standard ‘A raw, honest, necessarily uncomfortable and funny insight into depression.’ Jo Usmar, This Book Will Make You Happy
