Anna Wilson • Adult and female autism/Aspergers’ is a side of the story that’s so rarely told – though interest is gaining in the media. • Anna has already been on Women’s Hour to speak about her mother’s late diagnosis of Aspergers, and the ‘lost generation’ of women who were just categorized as ‘different’. • Anna Wilson is a successful children’s author who found her passion for storytelling from an early age. She speaks really beautifully about how her love of stories stemmed from avoiding the reality of her difficult childhood – and how it’s changed how she thinks about her own children.

• In the vein of DADLAND and THE LIFE OF STUFF, this also deals with our rediscovery of our parents as adults when we start to care for them, and the challenges this brings.

A searing account of a mother’s late-diagnosis of Aspergers – and its reaching effects on a whole family.

Anna grew up in a house that was loving, even if her mum was ‘a little eccentric’. They knew to keep things clean, to stay quiet, and to look the other way when things started to get ‘a bit much for your mum’.

Anna Wilson read French and German at Cambridge University. She is a writer and went into a career in children’s publishing.
It’s only when her mother reaches her 70s, and Anna has a family of her own, that the cracks really start to appear. More manic. More irrational. More detached from the world. And when her father, the man who has calmed and cajoled her mother through her entire life is diagnosed with cancer, the whole world turns upside down. This is a story of a life lived with undiagnosed Aspergers, about the person behind the disorder, those big unspoken family truths, and what it means to care for our parents in their final years.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author, an extraordinary story of redemption in the darkest of places.
David Sheff is the author of multiple books including the #1 New York Times bestselling memoir Beautiful Boy, which was recently turned into a movie starring Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Outside, Rolling Stone, Wired, Fortune, and elsewhere. His piece for The New York Times, "My Addicted Son," received an award from the American Psychological Association for Outstanding Contribution to Advancing the Understanding of Addictions.
At the time of his murder trial, he was held in solitary confinement, torn by rage and anxiety, felled by headaches, seizures, and panic attacks. A criminal investigator repeatedly offered to teach him breathing exercises which he repeatedly refused, until desperation moved him.
Jarvis Jay Masters’s early life was a horror story whose outline we know too well. Born in Long Beach, California, his house was filled with crack, alcohol, physical abuse, and men who paid his mother for sex. He and his siblings were split up and sent to foster care when he was five, and he progressed quickly to juvenile detention, car theft, armed robbery, and ultimately San Quentin. While in prison, he was set up for the murder of a guard – a conviction which landed him on death row, where he’s been since 1990.
With uncanny clarity, David Sheff describes Masters’s gradual but profound transformation from a man dedicated to hurting others to one who has prevented violence on the prison yard, counselled high school kids by mail, and helped prisoners -and even guards – find meaning in their lives. Along the way, Masters becomes drawn to the Buddhist principles – compassion, sacrifice, and living in the moment -and gains the admiration of Buddhists worldwide. And while he is still in San Quentin and still on death row, he shows us all how to ease our everyday suffering, relish the light that surrounds us, and endure the tragedies that befall us all. ‘This is a beautiful, profoundly spiritual book, and a page-turner. Jarvis Jay Masters’s transformation, from an unloved child of violence and poverty to Buddhist teacher on Death Row, is thrilling. Reading it changed me, threw the lights on, opened and gentled my heart. I’m going to give it to everyone I know.’ Anne Lamott, New York Times bestselling author of Almost Everything ‘This profound, gorgeous book displays the miraculous human capacity to find redemption, and even joy, no matter who or where we are. Jarvis Masters’s story proves that we are all united by our suffering and by our potential to help others who suffer.’ Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking ‘An inspiring book about how meaning can be found even in—perhaps especially in—adversity. It’s a study of Buddhism, of criminal justice, of the ways people connect with each other, and it’s written with deep feeling and verve.’ Andrew Solomon, New York Times bestselling author of Far from the Tree ‘I believe [this book] will encourage many people to examine their own lives and their unrealized potential for awareness, generosity, commitment, and courage.’ Rebecca Solnit, author of Men Explain Things to Me ‘I’m grateful to be Jarvis Masters’s teacher in part because he has taught me so much. I have rarely encountered anyone who expresses the essence of Buddhism in a clearer, more moving way than he does, and I deeply admire how David Sheff has captured that hard-won wisdom in this book.’ Pema Chodron, author of When Things Fall Apart

A call to action from Jane Fonda, one of the most inspiring activists of our time, urging us to wake up to the looming disaster of climate change and equipping us with the tools we need to join her in protest This is the last possible moment in history when changing course can mean saving lives and species on an unimaginable scale. It's too late for moderation. Our climate is in a crisis. 2019 saw atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases hit the highest level ever recorded in human history, and our window of opportunity to avoid disaster is quickly closing. In the autumn of 2019, frustrated with the obvious inaction of politicians and inspired by contemporary activists, Jane Fonda moved to Washington, DC to lead weekly climate change demonstrations on Capitol Hill. On October 11, she launched Fire Drill Fridays (FDF), and has since led thousands of people in non-violent civil disobedience, risking arrest to protest for action. In What Can I Do?, Fonda’s deeply personal journey as an activist is weaved alongside interviews with leading climate scientists, and discussions of issues, such as water, migration, and human rights, to emphasise what is at stake. Throughout, Fonda provides concrete solutions and actions that everybody can take in order to combat the climate crisis in their community. As Annie Leonard, Executive Director of Greenpeace US and Fonda's partner in developing FDF, has declared, "Change is inevitable; by design, or by disaster." The problems we face now require every one of us to join the fight. The fight not only for our immediate future, but for the future of generations to come.

This is her first adult book.
Our story with the stars Most of us have never been to space. To date, of the more than 100 billion humans that have ever existed, fewer than 600 humans have ever left Earth. But the exploration of space is the most significant thing we will ever do as a species. Sarah Cruddas has been looking to the skies her entire life. Her childhood was spent staring at the Moon and hearing stories of the space race, and she worked in a fruit factory to fund her love of the subject. Her subsequent career studying astrophysics, and becoming a television host and space journalist has seen her report on space exploration and chase launches across the world. In Look Up Sarah explains why she has always been a passionate advocate for why space should matter – to everyone. From our ancestors who first painted patterns of the stars in caves, to the US and Soviet pioneers who first forged a path beyond our planet, Sarah Cruddas explores the stories and sacrifices that humankind has made to understand more about our place in the universe. And even today, when Moon walking and people in space suits seem less relevant to us than climate change and conflicts here on Earth, she shows how everything from medicine to mobile phones is affected by space technology, and how a new generation of entrepreneurs have kick-started a new story with the stars. This is an inspirational and enlightening introduction to the importance of space to everyone, and why we should all learn to Look Up.

Many of those privileged enough to be distanced from racism are now having to come to terms with the fact that they continue to prosper at the detriment of others. Having spent the last four years researching, writing, and speaking about the benefits of diversity for society, June Sarpong is no stranger to educating and challenging those that have been enjoying the benefits of a system steeped in systemic racism without realising its true cost. In The Power of Privilege, June will empower those fortunate enough not to be ‘otherised’ by mainstream Western society to become effective allies against racism, both by understanding the roots of their privilege and the systemic societal inequities that perpetuates it. The Power of Privilege offers practical steps and action-driven solutions so that those who have been afforded privilege can begin undoing the limiting beliefs held by society, and help build a fairer future for all.

• Part of Mary Poppins’ enormous success can be attributed to the huge impact that the film had on society owing to its discussion of timely social issues. Mary Poppins and Mrs Banks are both icons of feminism; in a time when authoritarian education was prominent, Mr Banks’ transition to a happy family man was very symbolic; and Mary herself provided an example to many of how best to raise children. This book will discuss all of the ways in which people can learn from Mary, illuminating the film’s continued importance in today’s society.

Katy Brand is an award-winning writer, comedian and actor. After starting to write and perform comedy as a student at Oxford University, she became a regular on the UK live sketch comedy scene. In 2005 she took her debut Edinburgh show Celebrities are Gods to the Fringe which was immediately picked up for Channel 4 (Slap). This later became her award-winning ITV sketch show, Katy Brand’s Big Ass Show, which she devised, wrote and starred in. It ran for three series and later became a nationwide live tour.
Mary Poppins is arguably one of the most famous and well-loved films in the world, but how many of us are aware of the extent of the life lessons that it opens up to us? Yes, Mary Poppins has a great deal to say, and not just about talking umbrellas and bottomless bags (though both would come in handy…). Messages are hidden within that can influence how we live, how we view our own choices and mental health, the relationship with our parents, and even explain how to navigate the crazy adult world that we have grown to live in. In Practically Perfect: Life Lessons from Mary Poppins, award-winning writer and comedian Katy Brand explores how we can apply the messages from Mary Poppins to our everyday lives, covering themes as broad as the importance to mental health of keeping your bedroom tidy, our need for fantasy, the suffragettes, the pressure of toxic ideals of men having to provide for families (even when they hate their jobs and want to see their children and fly kites more), and the power of the capitalist system that we still live with today. This life advice is interwoven with a satisfying amount of geekery in the form of film analysis, interviews, and insider knowledge, allowing us to learn more about this remarkable character, and film, along the way. Practically Perfect is the common-sense manual for life that you never knew you needed.

When Lucy Deedes was a child, she used to sit on the Aga and read aloud to her mother while she cooked. She especially remembers the marmalade-making because the chopping took so long.
A perfect guide to making marmalade from the award-winning Lucy Deedes. Marmalade had been around for hundreds of years – as a Portuguese sweetmeat, an after-dinner digestif, an aphrodisiac – before it turned into the most famous breakfast ingredient ever. It has been a household staple for over 200 years, including the Queen (who reputedly has Tiptree Orange Marmalade on her white toast). Some like a clear jelly marmalade, with just a few wafers of peel hanging like seahorses in the jar; some a firm orange mixture with no extras. Some refuse to touch it unless it’s a dark paste, boiled down almost to toffee with a passing suggestion of booze about it. Whichever way you like yours, there’s the perfect recipe in The Little Book of Marmalade for you. Let Lucy Deedes, award-winning marmalade-maker, guide you through it for the perfect accompaniment all year round.
She started making my own marmalade when she realised as an adult just how hard it was to buy good marmalade. She began with a good old Katie Stewart recipe, tinkering about with setting points and wrinkles on saucers. Soon, people were asking if they could buy it. And so, she started a business, making it at home in the same way with her mother’s pre-war jam pan (now upgraded to some smart new ones), listening to the radio and experimenting with flavours and peel thicknesses.

Amanda Jennings lives in Oxfordshire with her husband, three daughters, and a menagerie of animals. She studied History of Art at Cambridge and before writing her first book, was a researcher at the BBC. With a deep fascination for the far-reaching effects of trauma, her books focus on the different ways people find to cope with loss, as well as the moral struggles her protagonists face. When she isn't writing she can usually be found walking the dog. Her favourite place to be is up a mountain or beside the sea.
‘Her best novel yet … twisty, malevolent and gripping … masterfully done’ Lisa Jewell ‘Warm-hearted, darkly atmospheric and wholly addictive' Lucy Atkins 'Gripping, intelligent, and beautifully written' Cass Green Doesn't every marriage have a dark side? To the outside world Hannah married the perfect man. Behind the closed doors of their imposing home it’s a very different story. Nathan controls everything Hannah does. He chooses her clothes, checks her receipts, and keeps her passport locked away. But why does she let him? Years before, in the midst of a relentless storm, the tragic events of one night changed everything. And Hannah has been living with the consequences ever since. Keeping Nathan happy. Doing as she’s told. But the past is about to catch up with them. Set against the unforgiving backdrop of a Cornish fishing port in the ‘90s, this is a devastating exploration of the power of coercive control in a marriage where nothing is quite as it seems… Praise for The Storm: ‘Amanda Jennings is a writer on the ascendant and The Storm is her best novel yet. ‘A terrific storyteller’ Daily Telegraph One family united by blood. Torn apart by war… England, 1459: Cecily Neville, Duchess of York, is embroiled in a plot to topple the weak-minded King Henry VI from the throne. But when the Yorkists are defeated at the Battle of Ludford Bridge, Cecily’s family flee and abandon her to face a marauding Lancastrian army on her own. Cecily can only watch as her lands are torn apart and divided up by the ruthless Queen Marguerite. From the towers of her prison in Tonbridge Castle, the Duchess begins to spin a web of deceit – one that will eventually lead to treason, to the fall of King Henry VI, and to her eldest son being crowned King Edward IV. She's about to join the writing team of one of the most respected showrunners in TV. And then the night before her first day, she's evicted from her flat. Joe has been working with Russell for years. He's the best writer on his team, but lately something has been off. He's trying to get his mojo back, but when his flatmate moves out without warning he has other things to worry about. Otty moving into Joe's house seems like the most obvious solution to both their problems, but neither is prepared for what happens next. Paired together in the writing room, their obvious chemistry sparks from the page and they are the writing duo to beat. But their relationship off the page is an entirely different story, and neither of them can figure out why. And suddenly the question isn't, will they, or won't they? It's why won't they? Eighteen years old, pregnant, and working as a pizza delivery girl, our dysfunctional heroine is deeply lost and in complete denial about it all. She’s grieving the death of her father, avoiding her loving boyfriend, and flagrantly ignoring her future. Her world is further upended when she becomes obsessed with Jenny, a stay-at-home mother new to the neighbourhood, who comes to depend on weekly deliveries of pickle-covered pizzas for her son’s happiness. As one woman looks toward motherhood and the other toward middle age, the relationship between the two begins to blur in strange, complicated, and ultimately heartbreaking ways. Bold, tender, and unexpected, Pizza Girl is a moving and funny portrait of a flawed, unforgettable young woman as she tries to find her place in the world ‘In fearless, propulsive prose, Jean Kyoung Frazier perfectly captures the listless ache of a grieving, aimless teen on the cusp of terrifying responsibility. Reshma, hasn’t just climbed the corporate ladder step-by-step, she has a fantastic personal story that will attract serious PR coverage: the daughter of immigrant parents, a Yale Law school graduate, landing in a top -5 law firm before quitting her job and becoming the first Indian-American woman to run for Congress in what was touted as a hotly-contested race where she was endorsed by the New York Observer and the Daily News and featured on the cover of the New York Times and the Washington Post. She then lost spectacularly, picked herself up and went on to found Girls Who Code in 2012. All before she was 40.
• This book couldn’t be more prescient or more timely in this current political, social and economic climate: Reshma’s heritage means that she can address credibly the setbacks that women of colour experience, and female empowerment continues to be a hot topic. • The social media following of Girls Who Code (Facebook: 160,000; Twitter: 190,000; 50,000person email list) will be leveraged to build support for the book as will Reshma’s congressional and public advocate campaigns page • Reshma’s strong network of celebrities, entrepreneurs, politicians, female bloggers and social media gurus (including Jeff Bezos, Hillary Clinton, Karlie Kloss, John Legend, Marissa Mayer, Sheryl Sandberg, Michelle Obama, Gloria Steinem, Christy Turlington, Will.i.am.) will help ignite interest in the book. • A global publishing event: we are publishing simultaneously with PRH’s Crown in the States.
The new Lean In, from the multi-award-winning Founder and CEO of national non-profit Girls Who Code and New York Times bestselling author Reshma Saujani. Everything from this past election cycle to Beyoncé’s feminist anthem speaks to this problem: women are expected to be “flawless.” Reshma Saujani, the daughter of immigrant parents, was no different. She worked her way to top grades, stellar schools and blue chip firms only to realize that the path to perfect was making her miserable. So, she did something brave and risky. She quit her fancy job and became the first IndianAmerican woman to run for Congress. Fortunately, she failed epically. It was that failure that set Reshma on a journey filled with setbacks, but ultimately, immense rewards. In 2012, she founded the non-profit Girls Who Code, with the goal of teaching 1 million girls to code by 2020 and closing the gender gap in technology. While working closely with young girls and meeting inspiring women through her widening network, she came to understand that there is a fundamental difference between how our culture socializes girls and boys. Namely, boys are taught to be brave – to take risks, speak up, play rough and fall down trying – while girls learn that the road to achievement is paved with diligence and caution. Some may argue that inherent biological traits encode this difference, but the truth is that the directive comes from the outside in. In 2016, Reshma’s TED talk “Teach girls bravery, not perfection” struck a chord around the world, with over 3 million views. Her book, BRAVE, NOT PERFECT, will be a manifesto that enables women to see the roots of this problem and rewire themselves – and future generations of women – for bravery. ‘This book is liberating – it unpicks perfection culture and will inspire you to live bigger and bolder.’ Annie Auerbach ‘Reshma is like your fearless friend throughout, encouraging you to take a leap of faith…If you fear failure and need a bravery boost, this one’s for you.’ Marie Claire ***

HC-K Mind, body and spirit General
Annie Grace has had a unique life from the very beginning. She grew up in a one-room cabin without running water or electricity in the mountains of Colorado and then, at age 26, became the youngest vice president in a multinational corporation. Success, however, led to excessive drinking and the possibility that she might lose everything. Annie recognized her problem but chose to approach it in an entirely new way. Annie's program has been featured in Forbes, the New York Daily News, and the Chicago Tribune. Annie is successful, happy, and alcohol-free and lives with her husband and three children in the Colorado mountains. Find out more at thisnakedmind.com/blog/
• Every glass of wine or pint of beer over the daily recommended limit will cut half an hour from the expected lifespan of a 40-year-old. And that recommended upper safe limit is lower than you might expect. A scientific paper suggests five 175ml glasses of wine or five pints a week – about 12.5 units in total. Overdo it, and you are at greater risk of stroke, fatal aneurysm, heart failure and early death. • Prof Dame Sally Davies, the government’s chief medical officer, has said that just one glass of wine could increase the risk of breast cancer. • According to a 2017 ONS study, more than a quarter of 16- to 24-year-olds are teetotal, a fourfold increase on the rest of the population, with just one in 10 seeing drinking as “cool”.
Control Alcohol, Find Freedom, Discover Happiness & Change Your Life ‘Brilliant’ – Stella Duffy Millions of people worry that drinking is affecting their health, yet are unwilling to seek change because of the misery and stigma associated with alcoholism and recovery. They fear drinking less will be boring, difficult and involve deprivation, and significant lifestyle changes. This Naked Mind offers a new solution. Packed with surprising insight into the reasons we drink, it will open your eyes to the startling role of alcohol in our culture. Annie Grace brilliantly weaves psychological, neurological, cultural, social and industry factors with her extraordinarily candid journey resulting in a must read for anyone who drinks. This book, without scare tactics, pain or rules, gives you freedom from alcohol. By addressing causes rather than symptoms it is a permanent solution rather than lifetime struggle. It removes the psychological dependence allowing you to easily drink less (or stop drinking). Annie’s clarity, humor and unique ability to blend original research with riveting storytelling ensures you will thoroughly enjoy the process. In a world defined by ‘never enough’ Annie takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of alcohol and specifically the connection between alcohol and pleasure. She dispels the cultural myth that alcohol is a vital part of life and demonstrates how regaining control over alcohol is not only essential to personal happiness and fulfilment but also to ending the heartache experienced by millions as a result of second-hand drinking. Finally, with perfect clarity, this book opens the door to the life you have been waiting for. ‘The most selfless and amazing book I have ever read. Thank you, Annie Grace, for your wisdom, intelligence, sense of humor, and love. I do believe you have saved my life. Today my youngest child got her final exam results and the next phase of her life begins. She will not be alone. Thank you, Annie Grace, for this gift.’ – Bernie M., Dublin, Ireland ‘As a huge fan of Jason Vale, I was really interested to read This Naked Mind. It was so interesting to read more about the science behind addiction and the unconscious mind. It added a new level to my understanding of why I want to live a sober and happy life! I highly recommend this book to anyone, whether they are interested in cutting down or staying alcohol- free; there are so many practical tips and suggestions. I loved it!’ – Sarah L., London, United Kingdom ‘This Naked Mind has allowed me to view my drinking habits from a new perspective. Now I know the
