WHAT YOUR DOG IS TRYING TO TELL YOU WITH HIS PAWS

1. PAW REACH

One of the least confusing signals produced with the paws is your dog reaching out with one or both paws under an item of furniture. In this case, you can be almost certain that he is asking for some help freeing a tasty treat or out-ofreach toy. Dogs can tell us a lot by simply moving their paws in specific ways. Knowing what these fancy foot signals mean can give you another way to read your dog's behaviour!

2. PAW HOVER

The tentative raising of a single paw while in a seated position is usually a request for you to take action of some kind, but it is important to note that it can also be an indicator of stress. Either way, it is best to respond to the ‘paw hover’ quickly and positively to reduce anxiety or frustration.

3. PAW TAP

When a dog briefly touches an object or person with one of his front paws, it is a way of drawing attention to his want or need. If the paw tap is accompanied by signs of anxiety like flattened ears or panting, it may also be a call for reassurance or help.

4. PAW REST

Resting a single paw on an object is usually used to communicate that your dog is looking for some love and attention or would like to be let out of the room.

5. PAWS UP

If your dog has both front legs off the ground and leans on something, whether your leg or a chair, they are making it known that they need your attention and assistance. It might be that nature is calling, they are hungry, or they would like to go for a walk – but they are looking for you to take action right now!
