MOVES THE BOARD
CALLAHO’S EXTRAORDINARY BAND
OF 1.50M PERFORMANCE PROVEN BROODMARES
The Callaho dream has always been to provide the South African showjumping market with premium sporting partners that have the genetic potential and requisite disposition to venture above and beyond the demands of modern top-level sport. In hindsight, we concur that this was a big ask to kick-off with, but our single-minded (somewhat tetched) commitment to this dream appears to slowly but surely being realized.
The king may rule the kingdom, but it’s the queen who moves the board.
“The king may rule the kingdom, but it’s the queen who moves approach to breeding has undoubtedly proven to be the key that has unlocked before-undreamt-of potential. With each generation, by one small click of the ratchet at a time, we are slowly inching the intrinsic quality of our Callaho dams closer to our ultimate vision. When we say the magic lies in the broodmare, we simply reveal a universal truth.
So, this is our magic. Callaho’s Breeding Magic. It’s all woven into our broodmares.

THE HISTORY
After 3 years trying to breed ‘pretty’ horses, 2002 found us on the road to Damascus. The realization that only with the very best mares could we breed ‘real’ showjumpers was seminal. So, in 2003 we set out on a month’s long pilgrimage throughout Warmblood Mecca – Western Europe, in search of foundation mares who would truly give fruition to our recharged ambitions. These would stem only from performance-proven pedigrees; either with the mare herself already having produced International showjumpers or she had to be immediately related to International jumpers.

Now 20 years later, with over 120 meticulously researched mares sourced, imported and tested over this time, our odyssey still continues today with several new fillies and broodmares currently on their way from Poland, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Holland. Remarkably however, several of those original broodmares brought home in 2003 have remained the foundation of Callaho’s most
THE VISION REALIZED
To date Callaho has home-bred 27 competitive 1.50m showjumpers for South Africa, of which no less than 20 have joined the ranks in the most recent 12 months. Remarkably, these competitors are not from only a handful of ‘outlier’ broodmares, but derive from 23 different Callaho dams! To our delight, with this depth and breadth of performance embedded within our entire breeding programme, it now becomes possible to speculate that with dogged determination, wrapped in several layer of patience, it may well be possible that we’ll stay the course for the next 20 years.

THE CALLAHO HALL OF FAME
To us here at Callaho, the most satisfying statistic of all is that 75% of these horses currently in sport were produced all the way to becoming highly competitive 1.50m showjumpers by the same rider that started them after the Auction. The list is
Congratulations to all these riders and their Callaho mounts; this is an unbelievable achievement. The promise inherent in Callaho’s creations will see the fruition of many more dreams and visions, both those of their riders and the teams who support them. For us, the Callaho family, this is our lived reality. Our Magic. Our own dreams
Callaho Stallions
Lissabon
As a young horse in Germany, Lissabon won both sections of his Stallion Performance Test in Oldenburg. Multiple style-class winner, he received the dream score of 9.3 for his jumping style at the Bundeschampionate Finals with Johannes Ehning. During his short breeding career in Germany, in addition to scores of champion foals and state premium mares, he produced six licensed sons of which Lissaro van der Helle rewrote history after winning three consecutive Bundeschampionate Gold medals.
After progressing to the 1.50m classes as a serial winner, he was imported in 2008. It was here in South Africa with Callaho broodmares that his reputation as a legendary progenitor was truly cemented with reams of progeny now revealing exceptional promise in the open classes, including the big 1.50m tracks. Indomitable at the top of the SASJ Sire Rankings, this magnificent stallion has proven himself, beyond any shadow of a doubt, to be a sire of Warmblood sport horses in a class of his very own.
Con Coriano
At the time we acquired Con Coriano, we were looking for a sire to take the Callaho jumper breeding program into a whole new dimension. Correct technique and carefulness coupled to abundant scope were the overriding factors in our selection criteria at the Neumünster Approvals in 2006. We wanted a Contender. Sire of more than 165 recorded State Premium mares and over 120 known Licensed sons all over the world, we decided that no lesser stallion than a son of the King of Holstein could adequately address our aspirations. Con Coriano’s dam, Miss Coriano, was Holstein Champion broodmare and is mother of seven open showjumpers.
Under saddle Con Coriano projects impeccable rideability and electric reactions preceding a classic, extraordinarily powerful jump. That he unfailingly passes on these qualities to his progeny is a matter of fact - a flood of top showjumpers from a kaleidoscope of broodmares are now streaming through the ranks up the open classes. The stuff legends are made of.

In October 2007, to kickstart our dressage breeding program, Callaho travelled to the Hanoverian Stallion Körung in Germany. For Ian and Jaco, there was only one colt to consider. Hence, it was a matter of going large or going home… After being re-located back to Germany in 2011, Benicio went on to spectacularly win the 6-year-old German Dressage Bundeschampionate under young horse specialist, Anna Fiebelkorn. Six months later, he aced his Stallion Performance Test at Schliekau with perfect 10’s for walk, trot and canter. His final score, 9.88, was the highest score ever achieved in the history of the Stallion Performance Test.
After only six years of formal breeding in Germany, Benico has already produced twenty-eight licensed sons (seven of whom are Premium stallions) as well as dozens of State Premium mares. With several of his sons shattering auction records and no less than eight offspring who qualified for the 2021 Bundeschampionate, this dressage sire is now firmly established as an international icon of dressage breeding.

It’s a no-brainer therefore that this Big-Time stallion has the sporting history and genetic makeup to become an extremely reliable producer of showjumpers equal to the very best.
With several test-matings done since his arrival, it is with much anticipation that his first offspring are currently being introduced to the sport.
Novella
Tolano van’t Riethof
After successfully competing for five years at World Cup competitions, as well as two Olympic Games (Seoul and Barcelona) and two World Equestrian Games, Tolano’s father, Chin Chin, has become celebrated as a key ingredient of any showjumping pedigree. Before being imported to South Africa, Tolano himself also competed successfully at 1.60m International level in Belgium under Reggy Hoffmann, as did his brother Salto van’t Riethof (Darco). From his brief breeding career in Europe, he remarkably sired eight 1.60 jumpers from only 56 offspring, four of which were 5* 1.60m competitors: Teirra, Upendo, Taran De La Pomme and the marvellous Voyeur with Kent Farrington at the helm, runner-up at the 2014 Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen where he received the prestigious Halla Award, given to the “Best Horse of the Show.”
Tolano, although now sadly deceased, has sired a profoundly interesting handful of progeny for Callaho. Developing into horses with much substance, they are remarkably elastic with huge power over the jump.

As a back-cross to his mother’s own damline, Chiletto is most certainly a very interestingly bred son of Carthago Z (Capitol I). Produced and competed by the breeder’s daughter, Ulrike Pöhls, up to International level in Germany, it was most fortuitous that Callaho was invited to take over this stallion for breeding duty in South Africa upon his retirement. Carthago is indeed one of the most revered sires to appear in any showjumping pedigree. While he himself jumped the International 1.60m classes is significant but having him bred to a mare who also competed at 1.60m International level, even though she was barely 16 hands high, is extraordinary. Furthermore, her half-brother, Querly P, by Querlybet Hero also jumped at this level. Other than Carthago Z and Cascavelle (Cantus), the flag-bearers of this damline, countless other International jumpers and licensed stallions have their origin in this prestigious pedigree.
It is most unfortunate that Callaho lost this stallion before his unique genetics could be fully utilized.

That the potential for breeding success at the apex of International Showjumping sport is firmly embedded in his genes is indisputable. Painstakingly produced by Carl Boonzaaier, Corinth is a regular competitor in the open classes. However, his real value, definitively underwritten by his performance pedigree, lies in his prowess as a sire. Belying his demure personality this reserved fella has risen to the challenge at Callaho, now unfailingly producing superior showjumpers of astonishing quality. This Hanoverian Stallion was purchased as a foal from the Verden Elite Auction in 2008. Developing into a one-of-a kind natural jumper, the result of his first outing at the 2011 Stallion Performance Test in Adelheidsdorf amply illustrates Sampras’s extraordinary qualities. Placed in the apex group of a very strong field, he was rewarded with a 9.75 out of 10.00 for his ability to jump and 9.5 for rideability.
His pedigree reads like pearls on a string…Stakkato, Libero H, Calypso II, Furioso II and then Inschallah all rooted in a dam-line which has produced a mind-boggling number of International jumpers. His two full brothers, Safran and Wallenberg, are also licensed stallions and uterine sister, Escada (Escudo I) as well as his dam’s half-sister, Caracalla (Cantus) are all 1.60m International jumpers. It’s small wonder that this stallion, truly an outlier and now sadly deceased, produces extraordinary jumpers with such consistency. Slower to reveal their prodigious talent, they nevertheless mature into superb jumpers befitting their sire’s heritage.

Larison
This statuesque Holsteiner stallion was chosen from a very strong collection at the 2013 Neumunster Approvals as a refining stallion. Our requirements were to introduce a reliable reproducer who would breed size and ‘blood’ without compromising the performance DNA of our dams. Therefore the deciding factor in our selection decision was the fact that Larison’s dam-line is liberally adorned with six 1.60m International showjumpers, including his half-sister, Easy Going (Lasino) under Juan Carlos Garcia and Landaris (licensed son of Landgraf I) under Johan Philippaerts.
Well, what a revelation this lovely stallion has been. Despite his size, he is a clever, sensitive horse with much blood, a classic technique and more than enough scope for the really colossal International 1.60m classes. Surpassing even our most optimistic expectations, not only has this bona fide gentleman produced truly exceptional jumpers from the outset, he unfailingly transmits his exquisite, elastic paces which has emboldened us to also test him on our specialised dressage mares. The result has been astounding. He has now firmly cemented a reputation as a true, without compromise, all-round Warmblood progenitor – a rarity in today’s world of specialized breeding. Meticulously produced by Chatan Hendriks, their steady progress up into the big 1.50m classes has left us all gobsmacked – this is genuinely a breath-taking partnership in the making.

Bolzano Du Quinze
Sourced from the 2013 Fences Auction as a 3 year old, Bolzano’s unprepared freejumping demonstration convinced us that this audacious Selle-Francais stallion by the current WBFSH Top-20 sire, Quaprice Bois Margot, was possibly just the spice needed to add blood and hybrid vigour to the Callaho melting pot. Out of a classically bred Anglo-Arab damline that has produced many, many showjumping and eventing champions, including Salambo (Osier du Maury), Lambros (Derby d’ Oc) and Rhéa du Puy (Gral des Verniéres), we concluded that that this outlier was exactly the ticket we sought. Expertly and patiently produced by Bryce McCall to 1.30m level, this prodigy has anomalously revealed extraordinary elasticity and much scope. With his first test crop proving to be every bit as interesting as their father, it would now seem that they have all inherited their father’s intriguing personality and jumping capacity. Now that Bryce has handed the reins over to the masterful hands of Gareth Neill, this chestnut wunderkind has found himself in the spotlight. Endowed with a tight front-end and an extraordinarily fluid bascule, he defines his descent with a flourish of elasticity. Their unperturbed ascent up the grades into the 1.50m level has revealed a showman; this flamboyant chestnut stallion revels in the challenge, the bigger the question the more enthusiastically he sets his mind to it.

Brilliantly paired to and carefully produced by Lara Neill, this partnership kicked off their career by winning the 5th Leg of the 2019 YHPS Potential Showjumping division, going on to be placed 2nd overall in 2020. STAR RATING EVALUATION AND PROTOCOL
SHOWJUMPING PROTOCOL
The Showjumping star rating is evaluated by Ray Korber, Callaho’s Senior Instructor. Ray is a SANEF, CEEPSA and FEI level 3 qualified instructor. He has been ranked in the top 10 SA Showjumping Leaderboard for the past 10 years which includes winning the SA Derby in 2019, World Cup Qualifier in 2018, Stokkiesdraai Cup in 2020, Burlington Cup twice and SA Riders Championships in 2016.
The evaluation criteria is grounded on the horse’s natural ability, taking into consideration balance, adjustability, scope and technique. All imperative as prerequisites to tackle the higher fences. The horse must have a good technique, adequate scope, be light off the ground and jump through the whither, as well as enjoy his work, giving the rider a good feeling over the jumps.
DRESSAGE PROTOCOL
The Dressage and Eventing star rating is done by Graham Winn, a multiple SA Eventing Champion who represented South Africa at the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in 2010 and served as the chef d’equipe of the South African eventing team at the 2014 WEG in Normandy. Graham is an allround rider, an accredited FEI eventing coach with a strong interest in young horses.
CROSS COUNTRY PROTOCOL
The Eventing horse is required to have the correct movement for the dressage phase as well as the natural ability to adjust to different types of jumps and terrain. The horse must possess good jumping technique and most importantly, enjoy the work on the cross country track and give the rider a safe feeling.
SHOWING PROTOCOL
The showing star rating was assessed by JJ Kemp. Sasa National panel showing judge as well as the Athletes Representative on the Sasa National Council. No stranger to the showing arena and reigning 2022 SA Adult Individual Showing Champion as well as 4 Overall Horse of year Ridden Supreme titles.
Each horse was evaluated using the standard “triangle” method set up on a grass surface and viewed on the right rein only.
1. A stand up assessed from both sides, front and back.
2. A walk away from the assessors for the first arm of the triangle.
3. A trot along the second arm of the triangle for the evaluation of the movement – side view.
4. A trot straight back towards the assessors on the third arm of the triangle.
5. Blemishes are taken into account as well as conformation, correctness of limbs, walk and trot paces and overall aesthetic appeal. No horse is presented under saddle for the showing assessment.
EXPLANATION OF THE STAR RATING SYSTEM
Please note that the star rating system used to indicate the utility of each horse is a subjective assessment by the training team in conjunction with the highly experienced Ray Korber. The evaluation is based on the temperament, conformation and athletic characteristics displayed by the horse when unrestricted, under saddle and during several free-jumping tests conducted in the course of the training period.
No Star The horse is not rated for this discipline or has talents which overshadow aptitude here.
One Star The horse has shown commendable ability and potential for this discipline which could improve substantially with further training and experience.
Two Star This horse consistently displays first-class aptitude for this discipline with significant potential for the higher levels.
Three Star Awarded to a horse with exceptional natural talent for this discipline. With appropriate training there is a high probability that this horse will excel at the very highest levels in a matched partnership with a skilled rider.
EXPLANATION OF THE COMPATIBILITY SYMBOLS AND INTERPRETATION OF TERMS
Novice A rider that is still developing their basic skills and lacks experience or needs to build confidence.
Competent A capable and experienced rider who posses a modicum of ‘feel’ and is adequately familiar with the training of young horses.
Skilled A sensible rider with considerable aptitude for the correct training of young horses under saddle, substantial experience and explicit natural ‘feel’.
Professional A highly skilled rider and horseman/woman with years of experience.
Recommended
Not recommended
Possible, with further correct training and or rider expertise
VETERINARY CLASSIFICATION
Besides the pre-purchase veterinary check every riding horse placed on auction has had two sets of radiographs taken. Both sets are sent to Equine specialist Dr Roy Gottschalk for interpretation. The results of Dr Gottschalk’s interpretation are then referenced to grade each individual horse according to standardized norms. Both veterinary pre-purchase records as well as the radiography reports will be available for viewing prior to the auction, and will be attached to the new owners auction horse history file.
Category D & E horses are not offered for sale and those that did not pass their pre-purchase exam will be withdrawn from the auction.
Radiographs are restricted to selected views which may limit the value of the study. Interpretation is done on the images presented. Radiographic techniques may, in certain instances, limit the value of the study.
Normal radiographs do not necessarily mean that there is no pathological process present as bone abnormalities might not be evident or because soft tissue cannot be fully evaluated.
A horse may be markedly unsound in the absence of any abnormal radiographic findings. On the other hand, abnormal radiographs DO NOT imply that the lesions found are, or will be, of clinical significance.
In certain instances, in the absence of current associated clinical signs, it may be impossible to determine the prognosis or significance of radiological findings.
It can also be impossible to predict how certain lesions will develop. While given radiological abnormalities may be interpreted with leniency, it does not necessarily follow that other veterinarians will concur.
The clinical findings, together with the current and intended use and level of performance of the horse must be considered when interpreting radiographic findings.
THE CLASSIFICATION PROTOCOL CALLAHO USES IS AS FOLLOWS:
Category A: No significant radiological pathology noted.
Category B: Radiographic pathology present – inconsequential or of uncertain significance.
Category C: Radiographic pathology present – uncertain significance or amenable to surgical intervention or medical management.
Category D: Significant pathology present with questionable prognosis as a sport horse.
The + sign indicates that although the horse has been graded lower than a five star the radiographic findings are of no clinical significance.

Ooh La La!… not only by Catoki Z who has passed on his “stunning presence, beautiful type, balance, elasticity and great mindset”, but out of a direct daughter of the great April Lovemother of scope-machine & multiple 5* International winner, All Star (Denis Lynch). All these features are amply reflected in this powerful, blood-type gelding who ticks all the boxesmodern jumper breeding at its VERY best!

This is a top quality mare by anyone’s standards. Our personal belief in the sport potential of this performance-line truly finds expression in this mare. This lovely lady has all the talent that her siblings Callaho Foreign Affair (Kyla Brimacombe) & Callaho Commidor (Angela Spenceley) are maturing into, but also blessed with super rideability. Please take note; Conlada is our fully sanctioned, definitive insider-tip for this auction.

This is a breeding anomaly! A specialized dressage prospect, with extraordinary paces perfectly suited for the top levels, but HOLD ON! Rewind to the 5th and 6th generation of this modern ‘dressage pedigree’ and embedded within lies no less than 9 x 1.50m+ jumpers. Therein lies the answer to this seriously freaky jumper. Don’t take our word for it; just go look at his video, then rewind it; again, and again. And again. He’s a dinkum jumper!

This spunky little jumper is an out-and-out trier and a real pleasure to ride. She thrives on giving every challenge her all, consistently displaying a superb jump and careful technique. This is no coincidence and is consistent with Con Coriano’s sound mind and electric scope crossed to a responsive Anglo-Arab damline. For a small or junior rider wanting to annihilate the competition, literally, at ANY level, this all-round enthusiastic young lady is just the ticket.

Check out this horse! A large boy who will need time, patience and strength before he will be able to sustain his patently obvious, enormous power. By International 1.60m scope machine, Carnaval LS and the damline of Simplicity (Consuri, 1.50m - Lara Neill), Carnegie is a nobrainer for someone with the confidence and self-control to trust that time will consolidate the potential that this horse already demonstrates.

A veritable rarity who descends directly from NINE consecutive generations of Hanoverian State Premium mares (that’s as far as the records go!) It therefore comes as no surprise that his dam, imported by Govett Triggol as a top showjumping prospect, has produced this sweet soul who’s gentle nature is fully focussed on pleasing his partner. Once established and confident in his rider, Ricardo offers a pleasurable ride. A true Hanoverian.

Eureka! We eventually struck gold with our avant-garde indulgence in French Anglo-Arab outcrosses. Con Coriano successfully harnessed the “fire” in these sharp, intelligent but highly reactive “hot” hybrids. Gifted with CC’s level mind and rideability also came his extraordinary scope. Con Velocé is big, he’s modern, he’s forward, he’s very rideable and… he jumps like hell!! Frankly, all we pray for now is a real artisan to produce him.

Elegant, balanced and endowed with a powerful canter, hyper-sport models like these don’t come around often. Lichella will soon join no less than four exceptional jumpers from our most precious foundation damline, that of Cassina, currently campaigning the 1.50m Grand Prix classes in SA. Oh my Gosh! How delighted we are with sire Equinox, who hails from France’s most decorated damline! From one of his very first matings he has produced an out-and-out jumping crackerjack! A natural acrobat who’s elasticity and ‘springs’ make any jumping challenge appear a sprightly canter around Badmington. Innovation, Oh Innovation! What a revelation this stallion is proving to be! Iggy Pop, the second test offering from his ultra-modern 75% thoroughbred sire, is so much more than what we reasonably could have hoped for. Beautifully refined in type; uphill and with more scope than he currently knows how to contain, in time this bona-fide, class jumper will have the strength and balance to employ his immense power. We can’t help but love this jovial character. Full brother to our Winter Edition’s Roma Elektra, there is no better guarantee for top-sport potential than having a Cartier out of Govett Triggol’s highly revered 1.60m jumping mare, Elektra. Reckless’s fearless point & shoot approach to life is huge fun and engenders much confidence. In time, when he has the strength to complement his energetic demeanour, this jumping dynamo is going to be unstoppable against the clock, whatever the level.

There eventually comes a time in a breeder’s life when he has reason to pause, take a look back at all the years of toil, the setbacks, the many challenges faced down in the pursuit of his vision. And then he turns to gaze at the horse which he sees before him, lost in thought. Quietly he lets out a sigh… then slowly, he whispers to himself, “maybe it was all worth it”. This is one such moment.

TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SALE
CONDITIONS OF SALE
These are the Terms and Conditions of Sale for the CALLAHO ‘ONLINE SALE BY AUCTION’ of Warmblood Horses, bred and produced by CALLAHO Warmblood Sport Horses, trading as CALLAGRO (Pty) Ltd.
To be held from the 31th of October 2023 until the 4rd of November 2023 and to be conducted electronically via internet on the website portal www.callaho.auction
1. INTRODUCTION & DEFINITIONS
i. For the purposes of this document a ‘registered buyer’ will be referred to as ‘bidder’ until such time as a tendered bid becomes the final closing bid and is electronically accepted; whereupon the ‘bidder’ will be referred to as the ’buyer’.
ii. The Conditions shall be binding on each and every bidder or buyer of horses, as well as any advisor or proxy of a person who is registered as a bidder and bids or buys on behalf of another person.
iii. Any person who registers as a bidder and accepts the terms and conditions of the auction and submits an electronic bid on the Callaho Online Auction Platform or makes an entry in the sales documents of CALLAHO shall be considered to be prima facie proof of the intent to purchase a horse in terms of the Callaho Auction terms and conditions.
iv. Furthermore, such registration automatically implies that the bidder has diligently read, be thoroughly familiar with and to have accepted, and agreed to, the Terms and Conditions of sale as laid out herein, and that these terms and conditions will in their entirety be binding on any consequences of such registration.
v. Finally, the buyer further, unambiguously and without a shadow of a doubt confirms for the second and final time when they enter their bid that that they have diligently read, be thoroughly familiar with and to have accepted, and agreed to, the Terms and Conditions of sale as laid out herein, and that these terms and conditions will in their entirety be binding on any consequences of such bid.
vi. For the purposes of this agreement “sale documents” shall include any of the following documents or electronic submissions, entered, completed and/or signed by or on behalf of the bidder or buyer;
• a completed online registration form
• an electronically placed bid on the auction platform
• CALLAHO’s sales invoice
• an agent authorisation form
• any power of attorney or a credit request or a promissory note
vii. “Horse” shall mean a Warmblood sport horse and “lot” shall have a corresponding meaning.
viii. “VAT” shall mean value added tax, currently calculated at 15%.
ix. “Purchase facility” shall mean the maximum amount any buyer, who has secured financing or terms from a third person or institution, will be allowed to bid for at this sale.
x. Any reference to “auction price” shall be deemed to be the value of the accepted, final winning bid, unless the context requires otherwise. The “auction price” excludes VAT, auction commissions, mandatory horse insurance as well as any administration fee which may be applicable.
xi. Any reference to “purchase price” shall be deemed to be the sum of:
a. the “auction price” + VAT (15%)
b. auction platform commission (5%) + VAT (15%)
c. mandatory horse insurance (0.5%) + VAT (15%) as well as any administration fee which may be applicable thereto, unless the context requires otherwise.
xii. Any reference to “purchaser” in the Conditions and/or the sale documents shall be deemed, unless the context requires otherwise, to be a reference to “buyer”
xiii. Any reference to “buyer” shall be deemed to include a “bidder” where the context can be interpreted to appropriately include both.
xiv. Any reference to “bidder” shall be deemed, unless the context requires otherwise, to be a person or their proxy who has completed an online registration form which has been accepted by Callaho.
xv. Any reference to CALLAHO, shall be deemed, unless the context requires otherwise, to include a reference to the respective agents, representatives and employees of CALLAHO.
xvi. Any reference to ‘current bid’ will refer to the bid which is currently the highest bid while bidding on that particular horse is still active on the portal and therefore still open and subject to a counter bid.
xvii. Any reference to ‘final bid’ or “final winning bid” will refer to the bid which was the highest bid at the moment that bidding on that particular horse closed on the portal and therefore not subject to a counter bid.
xviii. Any reference to “at the commencement of the fall of the hammer” will mean that bidding is closed and any further counter bids will not be accepted and any reference to “at the exact moment the online portal bidding window closes” or “ bidding timed out” or “bidding closed’ will have the exact same meaning.
xix. A horse shall be deemed “sold” immediately upon Callaho’s acceptance of the final bid which will be confirmed by e-mail communicated to the final bidder immediately after bidding is closed.
xx. Upon the issue of the e-mail confirming acceptance of the winning bid by Callaho, the bidder will henceforth, for the purposes of this document as well as any reference within the context of the Callaho Auction, be referred to as the buyer of that particular horse.
xxi. Headings have been inserted in the Conditions for convenience only and shall not affect the interpretation or meaning thereof.
xxii. Words importing one gender shall imply both genders and words importing the singular shall include the plural and vice versa.
xxiii. CALLAHO reserves the right to alter or amend the Conditions as and when it deems necessary.
2. NO WARRANTIES OR REPRESENTATIONS
i. The results of the X-ray examination and their interpretation by Veterinarians, their clinical examination, their statements and evaluations are services provided by independent professionals. No contractual promise by CALLAHO is made, since these veterinarians are independent experts expressing an opinion based on their own knowledge, experience and examinations of the auction horses and/or their X-Ray images. Consequently, the horses are sold as inspected and tested by the buyer; no liability is assumed by Callaho for the horse’s status of health, and neither may CALLAHO be held liable for the accuracy of the veterinarian clinical inspections and/or the corresponding evaluations of independent veterinarians.
ii. The onus is on the prospective buyer or his/her proxy acting on their instructions to make an appointment and arrive at the Studfarm within the days allocated to physically view, test ride and evaluate the horse they are interested in buying, as well as to request and familiarise themselves with any information or records which are available related to the horse in question.
iii. Furthermore, the onus is on the prospective buyer or his/her proxy to consult with the stud veterinarian who will avail himself to provide all results of the clinical examination and interpretations and report of the X-ray examination.
iv. Except as specifically provided for in the Conditions, the sale of all horses shall be “voetstoots”, on an “as is” basis, including all faults and defects, patent and latent, either before or after the sale.
vi. CALLAHO does not make or give any representation of a warranty or guarantee, expressed or implied, whatsoever.
vii. CALLAHO shall not, neither any of its representatives, be liable for any error or defects in respect of the correctness of any statement or information whatsoever pertaining to a horse, including any statement or information contained in any sale documents, Auction Catalogue or Callaho advertisement. “Statement” or “information” pertains to any representation including but not exclusively, without limitation, regarding the pedigree, height, description, condition, performance, potential, suitability or merchantability of, or any other particulars relating to a horse presented for sale on the auction.
viii. It is the sole responsibility of the prospective buyer to check the inoculation and/or the vaccination status of any horse which he may be interested in buying prior to the commencement of the auction and to satisfy himself that they meet all the legal and his own requirements.
ix. The buyer hereby acknowledges that he/she will make their purchase decision on full reliance of their own, their proxy or independent advisor’s conclusions regarding the condition of the horse or it’s suitability for intended purpose, and that he/she has not relied on any statement or representation made by or on behalf of CALLAHO to make such decision. Furthermore, the buyer acknowledges that no compensation shall be payable by CALLAHO for any faults, imperfections, conditions or any other patent or latent defects which may become patent at any time after the bidding is closed.
3. BIDDING TERMS AND CONDITIONS
i. The 2023 Callaho Online Auction Website is open for registration.
ii. Potential bidders and buyers will immediately be able to register online after which they will be deemed to have read and thoroughly familiarised themselves with the terms and conditions as well as the bidding protocol.
iii. Registered bidders will have their own dash board from whence confidential bids may be placed.
iv. The only information available to all bidders with respect to competing bidders will be the current highest bid value and the country from whence this bid is placed. All other information regarding bidders and their identity will be confidential.
v. Active bidding on all the horses listed in the catalogue will open from Tuesday October 31st 2023.
vi. The collection has been divided into 2 groups of 10/11 horses each, in the same order as the printed and online Callaho catalogue.
vii. Bidding on each group of horses will close, one group per evening, over two evenings from Friday 3rd of November until Saturday evening 4th of November 2023.
viii. Bidding on individual horses in each evening’s group will close sequentially, one lot at a time, every 10 minutes, from 6:30pm onwards. The group auction will thus continue every evening for approximately 2 to 3 hours until bidding closes on the last horse for the evening, sometime after 8pm.
ix. CALLAHO, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to withdraw any horse from the sale at any time without furnishing reasons for doing so.
x. Once a bid has been entered it cannot be withdrawn.
xi. The auction portal will list the initial bid closing time for each specific lot as well as time remaining before bidding closes.
xii. If a bid is entered within the last remaining 5 minutes before the specified closing time, then a new 5 minute bidding extension will open, commencing from the time the last bid was placed. This protocol allows a reasonable time for a counter bid to be placed.
xiii. On closure of the bidding, the last bidder (person responsible for the winning bid) will immediately be informed via an e-mail sent from the Callaho Auction portal that their bid has been accepted. At this time point the horse will be deemed to be sold and all risks related to the health or pregnancy status of the horse, will immediately pass to the winning bidder who will henceforth be referred to as the buyer.
xiv. Callaho, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to decline the offer vested in the last bid.
xv. Callaho, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to withhold any reason or explanation for its decision to exercise its right to decline the offer vested in the last bid.
xvi. Horses will automatically become insured for Critical Care, Mortality, Loss of Use and Condolence Contribution by Callaho on behalf of the buyer, from the close of bidding for a period of one month.
xvii. The buyer shall be responsible for settlement of the purchase price, which is the sum of:
1. the auction price plus VAT (15%)
2. Auction commission (5% of the auction price) plus VAT (15%)
3. Mandatory horse insurance (0.5% of the auction price plus VAT (15%)
4. Any miscellaneous administration fee which may be applicable, plus VAT (15%).
xviii. If for whatever reason a dispute arises in respect of the sale transaction, Callaho reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to either enforce the terms applicable to the transaction or to cancel the transaction and retain ownership of the horse in question.
xix. Furthermore, in the circumstances referred to in paragraph 3.xviii., Callaho retains the right to either keep the horse, or to resell the horse to whomever it decides, at whatever price it determines, or to give the horse away to whomever it deems fit. This decision shall be absolute, final and binding on all parties.
xx. Callaho retains the right, at its sole discretion, to determine or change the bidding rules as it sees fit to facilitate the auction process.
4. EXPORT AND IMPORT REQUIREMENTS
i. Any buyer who is not a South African citizen shall lodge an acceptable letter of creditstanding from his bankers with CALLAHO prior to the sale.

iii. The buyer shall not be absolved from complying with his obligations, in particular his payment obligation, in terms of the Conditions by virtue of an allegation of impossibility of performance or force majeure in regard to compliance with the necessary requirements.
5. RISK, OWNERSHIP AND MAINTENANCE COSTS
i. All risk in respect of a horse sold at the sale shall pass to the buyer upon acceptance of the winning bid, at which time the buyer shall forthwith be responsible for the care, keep, custody, control, insurance and security for the horse and for all expenses relating thereto and bear the risk of injury to, sickness or death of the horse.
ii. The buyer agrees to indemnify CALLAHO, its officers, employees, agents and representatives and the owners or operators of facilities in use by CALLAHO from all losses, damages, liabilities, expenses, claims, causes of action or legal fees arising out of or related to the possession, care, keep, custody, control or maintenance of any horse on which he is the successful bidder, including any claims arising out of injuries, sickness, death or damage caused by the horse after the bidder becomes the buyer and owner of the horse.
iii. Pregnant broodmares sold on the auction have been certified ‘in foal’ by the Veterinarian in the days (practically closest) before the auction and consequently the ‘loss of pregnancy’ risk passes to the new owner upon acceptance of their bid. Callaho will therefore not be liable for any loss of pregnancy of a broodmare sold at the auction.
iv. The buyer shall not allow or cause any horse bought in terms of the Conditions to become subject to any lien, hypothec or other form of security until such time as the purchase invoice has been settled in full. In the event of such lien, hypothec or other form of security arising, CALLAHO shall be entitled to act in accordance with the relevant sections of paragraph 7.
v. Callaho shall insure all horses offered for sale, on behalf of the buyer, for a period of one month from date of the sale. Callaho’s interests shall also be endorsed on the policy.
vi. Upon registration as a bidder the buyer of a horse acknowledges that he has read these terms and that he/she is thoroughly familiar with and accedes to the S&F schedule referred to in section 5.vi. and 5.vii, which can be accessed on the portal under the heading ‘Aftersales Service’
vii. Should the full purchase price of any horse not be settled in full, for whatever reason whatsoever, within the insured period, CALLAHO shall be entitled, at the cost of the buyer, to extend such period of insurance until such time as the purchase price is fully paid by the buyer.
viii. Save as provided for in these Conditions or unless other prior arrangements confirmed in writing have been made with CALLAHO, a buyer shall remove the horse purchased and paid for, at their earliest convenience from CALLAHO’s premises after the sale.
ix. Should the horse not be removed from the premises within a period of 14 days, commencing from the fall of the hammer, then Callaho reserves the right to levy a daily board and keep charge plus VAT at current market rates.
x. De Facto ownership of a horse shall only pass to the buyer upon payment of the full purchase price, notwithstanding that the buyer may have taken possession of the horse. Until the debt has been paid in full, the buyer shall not be entitled to have the horse registered in his name or that of his nominee, nor shall any passports, registration certificates nor any other documentation be handed over.
6. PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS AND PAYMENT.
i. CALLAHO shall, in its sole and unfettered discretion, be entitled to require any prospective buyer to lodge with CALLAHO a sum of money, or bank-guaranteed cheque, sufficient to cover the agreed purchase facility.
ii. Upon the purchase of a horse in terms of section 3., the buyer must settle the full invoice presented to him/her, STRICTLY WITHIN A PERIOD OF SEVEN DAYS, commencing from the time the winning bid is accepted.
iii. Should full settlement of the purchase invoice not be settled within seven days, Callaho reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to either
1. Cancel the sale and retake ownership of the horse.
2. Insist on the buyer honouring their obligations in terms of their purchase, whereupon
3. Interest at bank rate plus 2% will be levied.
iv. All horses bought at this sale must be paid for in full by the buyer prior to obtaining the required release permit. Purchases shall be paid by electronic transfer or irrevocable commercial letter of credit or cash, in which case a 2% cash deposit fee will be levied on the purchase price.
v. In its sole discretion, CALLAHO may accept a bank guaranteed cheque but acceptance thereof shall not constitute payment until honoured by the bank on which the cheque is drawn.
vi. CALLAHO reserves the right not to release a horse to a buyer, and to keep it stabled at its sales premises at the cost of the buyer, until payment of the full purchase price from the buyer has been honoured and cleared by the bank.
vii. Where a deposit is lodged with CALLAHO, CALLAHO shall deal with the deposit in the following manner:
1. should the prospective buyer not have purchased any horse the deposit shall be refunded to the prospective buyer on the Monday immediately following the auction.
2. should the purchase price(s) in respect of the buyer’s total purchase(s) be less than the amount of the deposit, the amount owing in respect of the purchase(s) will immediately be deducted from the deposit and the balance refunded to the buyer as soon as possible and no later than 14 days after the date of the auction to allow for administration of the sale;
3. should the purchase price in respect of the buyer’s purchase(s) exceed the amount of the deposit, then the deposit will be offset against the purchase price of the horse(s) bought.
4. No horse may be removed from the sales complex before a release permit in respect of that horse has been issued by CALLAHO. The release permit will only be issued if the horse is paid in full.
viii. CALLAHO shall, ONLY IN EXCEPTIONAL CASES, at its sole discretion, agree to waive, in writing, compliance with some or all of the provisions of paragraph 6.
7. LEGAL REMEDIES, REPOSSESSION AND COSTS
i. 1. be entitled to summarily cancel the sale of any horse to the buyer (in respect of which monies are owing by the buyer) and to repossess such horse from anyone in possession of it (“the repossessed horse”); or
2. to claim specific performance of all the buyer’s obligations whether or not such obligations would otherwise then have fallen due for performance; in either event without prejudice to CALLAHO’s right to claim and recover damages for breach of contract.
ii. In the event of repossession for whatever reason provided for in these terms and conditions, CALLAHO may take all necessary steps, either by themselves or through a proxy or agent, and enter upon any land or premises to recover possession of the horse.
iii. In the event of section 7.ii. coming into effect, the buyer agrees to voluntarily hand over the horse to CALLAHO or its agents or to instruct his employees, proxy, trainer(s) or whoever is in possession of the horse to do so. All costs and expenses occasioned by such repossession shall be recoverable by CALLAHO from the buyer.
iv. Should the buyer refuse to voluntarily hand over the horse, CALLAHO shall be entitled to immediately apply for and obtain a repossession order from a court of competent jurisdiction and that opposition to such application shall not be justified and shall attract an adverse costs order.
v. Where any person claims to have a lien over any horse in respect of which the purchase price has not been paid, CALLAHO has the right to settle such lien as it deems fit to recover possession of the horse. Any monies paid in discharge of any lien shall form part of the debt which CALLAHO shall be entitled to recover from the buyer in addition to any other amounts which may be payable.
vi. Notwithstanding the cancellation of the sale by CALLAHO, CALLAHO shall be entitled to retain:
• any sums paid by the buyer in respect of the debt; and/or
• the deposit or any portion thereof which was offset against the purchase price; in reduction of damages, if any, which may be suffered by CALLAHO by reason of the breach by the buyer and the resultant cancellation of the agreement of sale.

viii. The buyer consents to the jurisdiction of the Magistrate’s Court in terms of Section 45 of the Magistrate’s Court Act No.32 of 1944 (as amended) having jurisdiction under Section 28 of the said Act, notwithstanding that the claim by CALLAHO exceeds the normal jurisdiction of the Magistrate’s Court as to amount. CALLAHO shall, in its discretion, be entitled to proceed against the buyer in any other court of competent jurisdiction notwithstanding the afore going.
ix. CALLAHO reserves the right to refuse any buyer who has materially breached any condition contained in these Conditions of Sale the opportunity to bid or purchase a horse at the current auction or any Callaho auction held at any time in the future.
x. Callaho will not accommodate ‘buyer’s remorse’. Any horse purchased will be payable in full. Auctions are excluded from Section 55(1) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2008. (Act 68 of 2008), which expressly states that the cooling off period does not apply to goods bought on auction.
