This stunning lady you see here, gracing the pages of this edition of Hot Russian Brides® Men’s Lifestyle Magazine™ is single, 26 years old, 5’-6” tall, 110 pounds, has brown hair (currently), green eyes and has never been married. She’s perfect! All fantasizing aside, there’s more to Viktoriya than meets the eye. For instance, Vikky hails from Odessa Ukraine where she currently works as a manager. Like many young Ukrainian ladies, she is conversant in English and wants to eventually have children - Ah! But alas, Viky apparently knows the difference between sex and conversation, so she’s not going to fall ‘headover-heels’ for the first smooth-talker she meets. She is realistic about love though. Viky is not looking for an ideal man, she’s simply looking to fall in love with a real man.

To Viky, ‘real’ means a man who is responsible, stable, reliable and sincere. She is a “personality” she says, but is mindful that, superficially “ we are all personalities”. Viky seeks to get “beyond that” with her future partner. She just wants to feel complete in her future relationship. She claims to be sweet and caring, but at the same time, confesses to being emotional & temperamental. In other words... treat her right, or watch out ! Viky is also quite cultured and appreciates the fine arts, including art, museums, dance and theater. She also has a fondness for the great outdoors, and loves sports, animals and nature. Whenever she can, Viky also enjoys skiing and playing volleyball. In other words, she loves to live a full life! She also takes care of herself, staying fit and attractive. She values family and desires a man to make a family with. Brains and beauty both, you can see more of Viky on www.hotrussianbridesmagazine.com

DONALD
TRUMP BRAND OF THE YEAR
R
epublican presidential nominee Donald Trump is a self-made billionaire and this year’s winner of our 2016 “Brand of the Year” award. Now an iconic legend, Trump made his original fortune in the real estate market of New York and, for the most part, has never looked back. Already a well-known real estate mogul and businessman, Trump became a household name as a reality TV star on ‘The Apprentice’. Born in 1946 in Queens, New York, our ‘Brand of the Year’ winner got his start in the real estate business when he was only twenty-five years old, with an ambitious business strategy of developing large scale projects in Manhattan. In time, Trump was blazing a trail within top real estate development circles as a ‘mover and shaker’. Over the next 40 years, Trump would both ride the back of New York’s wildest ‘bull’ markets and be mauled under the weight of one of the city’s greatest ‘bear’ markets as it came roaring back down. But, ‘the Donald’ has always been able to persevere, demonstrating what the fictitious persona of U. S. Marshall, “Rooster” J. Cogburn himself might have referred to as ‘true grit’. The pinnacle of all attestations to Trump’s personal achievements, came on July 19, 2016, when Donald John Trump was declared the Republican Presidential Candidate, in one of the most divisive Republican party conventions in history.

Early Life Donald Trump was the fourth of five children born to Frederick and Mary Trump. Frederick, a builder and real estate developer, was a role model for the young Trump. Donald was a high energy young lad with an assertive A-type personality from the start, prompting his parents to send him off to military school when he was 13 years old in order to acquire some discipline. The academy served Donald well. Earning good grades and making numerous friends, Trump had positioned himself as a born leader by the time he graduated in 1964. He then entered Fordham University, but transferred in his junior year to University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Finance, earning an Economics degree in 1968. Real Estate Tycoon Following in his father’s footsteps, Donald embarked on a career in real estate development by working in the family business. Proposing a business strategy riskier than that of his father, he convinced the elder Trump to finance the expansion of the family’s current holdings by leveraging the equity within their existing real estate portfolio. It was an aggressive but profitable move, and in 1971, Donald Trump took over his father’s business. Moving to Manhattan soon after assuming control of the business, Trump started building a massive sphere of influence. A visionary at an early age, Trump was able

to see potential where others might not, and has largely reshaped the Manhattan skyline as a result. In 1976 in the first mega-deal of his career, and one of the most famous real-estate deals in history - Trump obtained an option to purchase the Commodore Hotel which, at the time, was about to be ‘shuttered’ by its Bankrupt parent [Penn Central]. With an option in hand, he then negotiated an unprecedented 40-year tax abatement deal with New York City officials. A 30-year old Trump knew that he would need an impressive development partner in order to borrow the money to restore the grand lady to her full potential. Targeting the Hyatt Hotel Chain one of the few large hospitality groups without a significant New York City ‘presence’ - was itself, a stroke of genius. Trump successfully entered into a partnership agreement with Hyatt, and with Hyatt as a management partner, he was well on his way to securing mortgage commitments [ultimately from two different banks] totaling $70M for renovations. The face lift started in 1978, and opened as The Grand Hyatt Hotel in 1980. The Trump Empire In 1977, Donald Trump married fashion model and Olympic skiing hopeful, Ivana Zelníčková and the couple had three children together. Trump Tower opened in 1982, featuring a six-story atrium as well as an 80-foot waterfall plummeting amongst pink marble, and a plethora of high end retail stores. The building garnered Donald Trump national attention and heralded him as the Boy Wonder with the business strategy to rebuild Manhattan. After such real estate development success, Trump decided to try his hand in the casino business, acquiring a Hilton Hotel in Atlantic City and renaming it the Trump Castle. He would go on to acquire the largest casino hotel in the world, the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, which finally opened in 1990. It was in 1990, with the fall of the real estate market, that Donald Trump, the “golden boy” of real estate, came up against his first hard core set-backs. During this time, his $1.5 billion empire collapsed to as little as $500 million. Never one to settle for defeat, ‘the Donald ’ managed to come up with a business strategy that would reverse the massive deficit on his personal balance sheet, once again amassing a fortune of over $2 billion dollars. The Donald During his economic struggles - his net worth plummeting to only 1/3 of its previous value - Trump decided to use his prominent presence and charisma in the realm of reality television. This was a tumultuous time for Trump with a real

estate glut, vultures [banks] circling overhead and ensuing marital strife, Donald and Ivana were divorced in 1991. He remarried in 1993 to Marla Maples with whom he already had a child. That marriage lasted four years and ended in a highly contested and publicized divorce. He married his current wife Melania in 2005 and a year later they had a son, Barron Trump (no pressure there) . Capitalizing on his controversial nature, “The Donald” took to television, starring in the NBC reality hit television show, The Apprentice. The Apprentice features candidates vying to be hired by Trump as his next apprentice. Each week, one of the candidates gets eliminated when Trump roars his notorious catchphrase, ”You’re fired!” Donald Trump For President Our iconic “Brand of the Year” winner for 2016 has had a run for the presidential election that’s been riddled with controversy. People either love him or they hate him, but few are indifferent to the Donald Trump brand. During his campaign, he called out Senator John McCain’s war record. Donald Trump discredited McCain as a war hero stating, ”He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured? I like people who weren’t captured.” During the Vietnam conflict, McCain was captured and spent years being tortured by the North Vietnamese in the infamous Hỏa Lò Prison, (dubbed the ‘Hanoi Hilton’ by U.S. Prisoners of War). McCain survived inhumane conditions and endured grueling torture, not the least of which was the repeated breaking of both his arms. Donald Trump’s reference to Senator John McCain’s horrific ordeal as a POW was clearly in poor taste, and has caused many to criticize him for his insensitivity. Yet, some have advocated his willingness to speak his mind regardless of platform or political party expectations. Love him or hate him, Donald Trump is always himself and is currently this country’s most recognized Brand. He can be counted on to always speak his mind, regardless of how provocative the message. Trump is the epitome of the American dream, following Ayn Rand’s ‘pull-yourselfup-by-your-bootstraps’ strategy and philosophy that any citizen can achieve the American Dream. Whatever your views of him may be, there is no argument that Donald Trump is a uniquely recognizable and iconic Brand. As for the ‘man’ behind the Brand, he is clearly captain of his own ship and thus far, that ship has sailed him into greatness. Therefore, we wish to extend the heartiest congratulations to this year’s ‘Brand of the Year’ winner, . . . “ The Donald “ J. Trump.

SUCCESS
he image of the successful business tycoon is part of the American dream. Growing up, we are often told that if we want to be a success and are willing to work hard, we can achieve anything. After becoming adults we soon discover that it’s not that simple. There are a lot of people who want to be a success and have the willingness to work hard, but only a handful of these people achieve all that they envision.
T
So, what separates the most successful people from those that fail to achieve their lofty childhood goals? Surprisingly, it isn’t education, it isn’t luck, and it isn’t some magical formula for how to succeed in business. The business tycoons of our society have been able to achieve success because of certain “tycoon traits” they 1 4

possess that others don’t. Here is a list of four of the must-have tycoon traits for those people who want to become a success in business:
1. BE A Visionary Being a visionary is probably the most important of all the tycoon traits. One primary reason people are unable to discover how to succeed in business is because they simply do not have a vision of the future. Visionaries must have vivid imaginations in order to see where the future is going before it arrives. This doesn’t mean visionaries just sit around all day dreaming up things. A true visionary must be able to formulate the concrete steps of action to take in order to attain or effect the future they clearly see. MEN’S
L IFESTYL E
M A G A ZINE
Many of those who have succeeded, were first willing to fail. In this generation, probably no one person exemplified being a visionary more than Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs was a college dropout who went on to co-found Apple Inc., and had an uncanny ability to envision many of the products his customers wanted - without direct consumer input. While not an electronic engineer or programmer himself, Jobs was able to assemble teams of talented individuals to build the things he imagined. Under Jobs’ leadership, Apple developed popular consumer products such as the Apple II, several versions of Macintosh computers, the iPod, iPad, and iPhone. Jobs also played a key role in the development of Pixar Studios, which was eventually acquired by Disney Studios for over $7 billion dollars.
2. STAY Focused The second most important tycoon trait needed in order to succeed is the ability to stay focused. Being focused involves the ability to set aside all other distractions. If we prioritize what needs to be done, set aside distractions and put the appropriate time and effort into our work, we can achieve the best results in the shortest time. Many people think of Bill Gates as an example of how to succeed in business. Gates attributes his success to his ability to put in deep, ‘distraction-free’ work until he achieves his goals. The persistent hours Gates spent programming and writing code while at Harvard led to the founding of Microsoft. Gates has now redirected his focus toward finding solutions for global problems through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
3. BE open-minded Open-mindedness is probably the most difficult of the four tycoon traits to acquire in your quest for success. Hardly anyone would confess to being close-minded, yet many people don’t really understand what “open-mindedness” truly means. To many, it simply means open to new ideas, willing to consider new approaches, listening to suggestions and/ or able to accept constructive criticism. In part, this might be true, but according to Anthony K. Tjan, CEO and Founder of Cue Ball, a Venture Capital Group, being open-minded is also about being more ‘self-aware’ of your limitations and weaknesses so that you can constantly improve yourself. If open-mindedness requires ‘self-awareness’ and being self-aware means knowing your limitations & weaknesses, H O T
RUS S I AN
BRI D E S®
-
then for many, true “open-mindedness” may be beyond our grasp. Why? Well, it is said that you must experience failure in order to initially determine and/or define your “limits”. If you ask any athlete or motocross rider, they’ll tell you to pursue a series of progressive goals, each more ambitious than the previous. However, many of us lack the courage to venture beyond our level of comfort or experience. We fear that once outside our ‘comfort-zone’ we’re vulnerable, and we’re correct. However, this is exactly how we are most likely to become self-aware of our ‘weaknesses’. In fact, it’s those weaknesses that lead us to establish our limitations. After all, limits are usually defined as the ultimate point of failure. Ironically, failure is the corner-stone in building for success! It’s what separates the Tycoons from the Try-foons. Only through failure can we truly discover if we’re ‘open-minded’, for it is ‘open-mindedness’ that gives rise to optimism and hope. They in turn fuel perseverance and that, combined with a healthy dose of humility and ‘self-awareness’, is what ultimately empowers us to achieve and appreciate success!
4. Be a Risk-taker The final of the four tycoon traits that people need to be a success is a willingness to take risks. People go to great lengths to avoid taking risks in business due to the cost associated with failure. But many of those who have succeeded, were first willing to fail. In fact, many successful tycoons say there is no true success without failure. Amazon’s Founder & CEO, Jeff Bezos knows firsthand the importance of risk taking. He recently told a group of students at the Bezos Center for Innovation; “Without a willingness to fail, you cannot innovate because most innovations won’t work.” Bezos doesn’t stress over shortterm consequences if something fails. In fact, Amazon’s CEO continues to take risks despite the fact that Amazon has lost billions of dollars in failed experiments. That’s because Jeff knows that gains from one success can greatly outweigh the losses of many failures. Bezos’ risk-taking has certainly paid off, as he recently surpassed Warren Buffet to become the third wealthiest man in the world. These four are not an exhaustive list of the traits you need to be successful in business, but considering some of the most successful tycoons in American history share these traits, you might want to consider adopting them in your own pursuit of The American Dream. It is understandable why many Western and American men are becoming tired of the feminist attitude so prevalent among Western women today. For those men who have decided they have suffered enough from these anti-man and anti-family attitudes, something better is available in a lifelong mate. There are no superior wives to be had nowadays other than single Russian and Ukrainian women. Here are five good reasons to consider a Russian or Ukrainian lady for a happy love-filled future and family.

A RUSSIAN OR UKRAINIAN WOMAN KNOWS HOW TO TAKE CARE OF HER MAN . . . AND HER CHILDREN. Russian and Ukrainian Women Believe it is Their Destiny to be a Loving Wife and Mother These women are ideal for any man who appreciates the role of women as loving mothers and wives. This is because Slavic ladies hold on to the core belief that a family is the most critical part of a woman’s life. In Russian culture, a woman’s ultimate calling is to get married and become a mother. Because of their heritage, they put a great deal of effort, love and care into the raising of children. This ensures that their children are given every opportunity to be strong and happy. These ladies come from an old-world upbringing, and therefore they may ignore a man’s shortcomings if he can promise a life that provides a healthy balance of work, family and children. Traditional Values Reinforce This Destiny for Single Russian and Ukrainian Women Motherhood for a Ukrainian or Russian woman may be reinforced by her traditional values. However, this does not mean that a Russian woman is ready to abandon her ambitions and clean house all day. Due to wide-spread male cultural issues, there are many ladies who have unexpectedly become single mothers in the East. These ladies have had to fend for their families and have become successful. However they know the value of being a sexy, devoted wife and loving mother. Even the most ca-
reer-savvy woman will not be lax in these important roles. Nothing makes for a better marriage than a Russian or Ukrainian woman who knows how to take care of her man and her children. Slavic Women Take Great Care in Their Appearance and are Sure to Always Look Their Best Men desire women who look after themselves and take pride in their physical appearance. Russian and Ukrainian women know staying in shape increases self-esteem and these ladies are widely known for their confidence. Most Ukrainian and Russian women will be in better physical condition from walking several miles each day - to work. Trying to always look their best stems from a culture in which this quality is admired in women. American men also admire these characteristics because they are reminiscent of the qualities that we loved and respected in our grandmothers. In contrast, visit any Walmart Store and you’ll see young women with unkempt hair, no makeup or even wearing their pajamas. Single Russian & Ukrainian women wouldn’t be caught dead looking like this in public. We’ve all heard a Grandmother ask; “Since when did taking pride in your appearance become passe?” Well, it seems to have gone out of style, slowly, over the years. But, it gave rise to an all new ‘Made-in-America’ fashion . . . It’s called feminism!

2 THINGS YOU SHOULD be doing IF YOU WANT TO
LIVE
TO BE... hese days, men and women both have a much better chance of living to the ripe old age of 100 than we did just 50 years ago. With recent advances in modern medicine, technology, dietary supplements, and the prevalence of exercise in our society, it’s much more likely that a large subset of the population will live to become centenarians.
In fact, it’s estimated that by 2050, in North America alone, there will be over 150,000 people that live to celebrate 100 years of age. What can you do to increase the likelihood of a long, healthy life? We’ve identified the two most important aspects of modern life that have been scientifically linked to longevity. By adhering to these two principles, you and your significant other could live long enough to share each other’s 100th birthday cake!

CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISE
PUMPING iron
0 I 2
Many people are sick of hearing about how lifting weights plays such a key role in health and longevity. However, that attitude does nothing to negate the fact that pumping iron really works! Weight training is undoubtedly the single most important thing you can do to increase the length, and quality of your life. In fact, it can increase overall satisfaction and promote a sense of well-being. This has a positive impact on everything from your posture and sex life, to things as mediocre as carrying the groceries in from the car. Bottom line? EXERCISE!
Weight-lifting has been scientifically proven to have the most impact on staving off the sands of time and keeping our bodies in tip-top shape. You don’t have to be a bodybuilder in order to enjoy the benefits of weight-lifting either. Even a simple 3-day split routine can have a massive impact on the way our bodies age. According to a study conducted at the Krogh Institute in Denmark, aging athletes that continued weight-training after they had retired from profes-
sional sports maintained strength levels on par with those half their age. Another study conducted by The University of Boston, MA, confirmed that both muscle and bone loss totally stopped and sometimes even fully reversed through a regiment of weight-training. Participants were asked to follow a weight-training plan - twice a week- for one year. When they were surveyed again, the data demonstrated that nearly 100 percent of the participants were performing at levels that indicated they were 20+ years YOUNGER!
RUS S I AN

in the gym and have no plans to start, you can benefit from walking briskly for 30-60 minutes, as little as 3-days per week. While it may not be quite as effective as weight-training, for those who can’t get ‘pumped-up’ about the idea of “pumping up”, you can still reverse years of physiological neglect by enjoying a nice, brisk stroll only a few times per week. Statistical data improves exponentially when doing high intensity interval training (HIIT). HIIT training involves performing any aerobic (or resistance) exercise applying the same principal, initially pushing yourself to the absolute limit or maximum intensity for 2-3 minutes (or as many sets as you can complete) and then cutting back to a ‘maintainable’ pace (or reduced resistance) where you can still continue the exercise at a lower percentage of your maximum effort. By repeating this cycle continuously or for at least 10 minutes (or 2-3 sets), studies have shown that HIIT training reduces depression, reduces aging and can over time, greatly increase longevity.
In addition to exercise, a proper nutritional diet can help anyone live to be 100. A wealth of information is available online to help you design a fitness regiment that can be easily incorporated into even the most hectic lifestyle. The late ‘cigar-smoking’ George Burns lived to be 100 and said, “You can’t help getting older, but you don’t have to get old!”
If you want to age gracefully, live longer and/or simply feel better, then it’s never too late to hit the gym!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN OLYMPIC ATHLETE 1. TRAINING
2. EATING
As the Olympics get closer, most athletes find themselves training for at least ten hours a day. This might include strength training, which we’ll look at below, as well as exercises designed to improve performance in their specific event or sport.
To accommodate the massive amounts of training on the road to Rio, athletes often eat as many as 5,000 calories or more in a day. To put that into perspective, that’s more than twice the amount of calories that most Americans eat.
For athletes participating in track and field events, training on the ‘road to Rio’ often involves strict regiments designed to develop both endurance as well as short bursts of strength. For example, many long-distance runners still focus on sprinting, because when participating in their endurance event, they will often need a quick and powerful burst of speed to beat their competitors.
However, it’s important to realize that these 5,000 calories are not typically derived from a fast food drive-through. Trainers make sure that Olympic athletes are eating healthy food that’s high in protein, or complex carbohydrates, as well as other vitamins and nutrients. These calories help keep the athletes’ energy high, and also prevent drops in blood sugar that negatively affect their athletic performance.
the Olympics. Although it’s true that Olympians
are often born with a genetic physique that helps them attain world-class levels of athletic performance, the “road to Rio” requires enormous dedication, time, effort & endless training. Here at Hot Russian Brides® Mens Lifestyle Magazine™, we wanted to take a look into the process of what athletes do to prepare for the Olympic Games. What special training is required for athletes to achieve the gold?

3. SLEEPING
4. OFF-TIME
5. STRENGTH TRAINING
It might surprise you to see ‘sleep’ on a list of what athletes do to prepare for the Olympic games. However, it’s only during sleep that the body can repair the damage done by the intense physical training. A good night’s sleep is also absolutely essential (often a minimum of 8-10 hours is required nightly) for maintaining the necessary levels of energy and intense focus required to compete in the Olympics
If you’ve been doing the math, you’ll have noticed there’s not much leisure time for an athlete on the road to Rio. However, sports psychologists will recommend athletes take at least 30 minutes per day to meditate and/or focus on something that takes their mind off of training. Many athletes either use this time to socialize with friends and family, but just watching a television show or reading a book is good.
Most athletes don’t earn a living from performing in their sport. Because of this fact, athletes are forced to find creative ways to fit intense training regimens into their lives. The Olympic games take place every four years, but athletes start training many years in advance. Distance runners spend years building ‘cardio’ and base mileage before they advance to actual training for their specific event.
5. THE ROAD TO RIO: SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY & MENTAL TRAINING
It becomes difficult for any athlete to continually maintain the heightened levels of motivation that are necessary. This is why most athletes will attend therapy sessions with a sports psychologist to prepare mentally for the exhaustive ‘road to Rio’.

‘Physical training is just the beginning. Another important aspect of what athletes do to prepare to compete in the Olympic games is mental training. A continued, intense focus on strength training can take a massive mental toll on athletes on their way to the Olympics.
Strength training is one of the primary aspects of the road to Rio for most athletes. One of the main reasons athletes devote so much time to strength training is that it greatly reduces injuries that tend to occur as the levels of training become increasingly intense. Injury is one of the most dreaded things that can happen to an athlete while on the road to Rio. An injury that occurs late in the training period can ruin all their years of hard work and preparation.

When the event begins, these athletes must perform in front of a huge crowd in attendance as well as international TV crews broadcasting their performances to the four corners of the globe.
LESSONS THAT WE CAN LEARN FROM ATHLETES ON THE ROAD TO RIO We hope you found this glimpse into an Olympic athlete’s ‘road to Rio’ informative and interesting. It is always beneficial to take some of these lessons about focus and drive and see how we they can help each of us improve in our own daily lives. To succeed, it’s important to truly invest 100% of yourself into what you love. That’s usually the only way to become the best. Whether you’re on the ‘road to Rio’ or competing for a promotion at the office, it takes dedication, focus, training, visualization, sleep and nutrition to go for gold!

L EISUR E he pleasure in smoking a fine cigar cannot be understated, and the activity can even have a positive effect on your mental health. The relaxation while smoking cigars is what draws many men to it. A cigar can take between forty-five (45) minutes to two-anda-half hours to smoke, depending on its size. But, what makes cigars so relaxing is how smoking one becomes a period of quiet reflection, where you can detach from the troubles of the outside
T
world. Enjoy a cigar while reading a book or kicking back in your favorite chair and you’ll discover a very rewarding experience. Another advantage of this hobby is that it has always been incredibly social. Many like to indulge while playing a game of poker with a few buddies. Most casual cigar smokers are surprised at how much work can be involved in making a cigar. The actual process is complicated, but it starts in tobacco fields in Honduras, Nicaragua, Cuba and Dominican Republic. After the plants are mature, the tobacco is harvested and then cured. However, the flavor and quality of a cigar will be crafted from a master blender. He brings harmony to the cigar wrapper and the filler. After the blend is perfected, approximately 250 to 500 hands will inspect each hand-made cigar to ensure quality. When it comes to cigar culture, there are a rich variety of subjects you can discuss. You can talk about maduro versus oscuro, or the different cigar sizes, shapes and the proper way to season a humidor.
As a result, you have many things to talk about with other aficionados over a cigar. The vast majority of people smoke a cigar to enjoy the exquisite and subtle flavors of the blend. You have as many different flavors as you do with wine, and as many interesting notes and nuances, from the mild to the full-strength stogies. If you are a novice, you’ll want to take baby steps and start with something mild because you want your first experience to be more pleasant. As with all hobbies, you can make great friends in the cigar world, from the beginners who are eager to learn, to the old timers who impart words of wisdom. Most cigar smokers love to relax, enjoy a glass of whiskey and smoke a cigar over some good conversation among friends.

hen the Tragically Hip formed in 1983, singer and frontman Gord Downie, bassist Gord Sinclair and guitarist Rob Baker, were students at Queen’s University. But the three musicians already knew each other from their high school days at Kingston Collegiate, where drummer Johnny Fay was still studying at the time. As well as adding the younger Fay, they also added Davis Manning, a saxophone player from British Columbia. Davis was older than the others and had experience playing professional gigs, however, Manning left the band in 1986 and a second guitarist, Paul Langlois - living in the same house as Baker, Downie and Sinclair, at the time - joined the band. The band started to gain popularity playing at the pubs on Queen’s University Campus and became known as the campus’ favorites. After securing steady gigs at The Lakeview Manor in Kingston, - a strip joint by day, and a Rock’n Roll night club by night - the Tragically Hip was ready to start playing Toronto gigs. However, it was when MCA records president Bruce Dickenson saw them perform at the famous Horseshoe Tavern, on Queen Street in Toronto, that The Tragically Hip got their big break. They would go on to become one of Canada’s premier Rock, Pop, Pop-Rock, Country Music, and Alternative bands. Was it Really Their Final Tour? Canada recently, and sadly, bid farewell to this superstar band in what was billed by Media as their “Final Tour”. But, was this the “Final Tour” for the Tragically Hip? Not officially. The Band shocked fans on May 24th, 2 8

when it announced that the group’s vocalist and frontman, Gord Downie was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. However, the Band’s announcement was simply meant to convey to fans that, in light of Gord Downie’s recent diagnosis, the Hip’s upcoming tour “could well be their last tour”. Stating that Gord is “fighting hard” and how the Tour “feels like the right thing to do now, for Gord, and for all of us.” Media sources report that Gord Downie has undergone treatment, responding well to radiation and chemotherapy, but Doctors at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center are not very optimistic about Downie’s prognosis. This is due to the fact that Gord has an aggressive form of cancerous brain tumor (kn ow n a s ‘glioblastoma’) that is not considered curable. The ”Man Machine Poem” Tour The Tragically Hip began their recent tour - to promote their new album - ‘Man Machine Poem’, in July in Victoria, British Columbia, and drew tens of thousands of fans throughout their fifteen performances across Canada, with a staggering 11.7 million Canadians - roughly onethird of the population - reportedly tuning-in to watch the last of their tour’s 15 performances televised on CBC from the K-Rock Center in Kingston, Ontario, Canada on August 20, 2016. Even the Prime Minister of Canada was on hand to enjoy the show, in a proud display of the their Nation’s recognition and support. The concert, already recognized as the second most MEN’S

watched event in Canada’s history, with only one other event ever having recorded more viewers (the 2010 Gold Metal Winter Olympics’ Men’s Hockey Tournament between Canada and the United States). Clearly, there can be no doubt that Canadians love Gord and The Tragically Hip. Canada’s Most-Awarded Musicians The Band has received 14 Juno Awards and had nine No.1 Singles (Eleven hit Singles in Canada), and have been the recipients of numerous awards from 1990 until 2006, ranging from Most Promising Group, Canadian Entertainer of the Year 1991 and 1993, Group of the Year 1995 and 1997, Album of the Year 1997, and awards for Best Album Design, Best Single, and Best Music DVD of the Year 2006. With Gord Downie as frontman, guitarist, and vocalist, Tragically Hip, one of Canada’s most loved bands, offers a diverse style of music. The Tragically Hip also create innovative lyrics and music arrangements that are part of the nuanced Canadian music accent, with a hint of blues woven into the Tragically Hip’s signature rock pop beat. Gord Downie played down the lack of interest in the Tragically Hip in the U.S. in his usual laid-back manner and confident way. He indicated in a recent Rolling Stone Magazine interview that the Tragically Hip was unaffected by this. To Canadians, the Tragically Hip is much more than the country’s most famous band. They’ve become a legend among musicians internationally. One of the reasons Canadians are so enthused by the Tragically Hip is due to lyrics that strike a deep note within the national spirit of all Canadians: the ability to put into words the deepest feelings and observations of Canada’s history, land, water and demographics. This is bolstered by Gord Downie’s unique minimalistic, poignant vocals. For example, the lyrics to “Save the Planet”, from their album “Phantom Power”, allude to individuals who do nothing about the environment in which they live. Their album, “Fully Completely”, contains a song “Wheat Kings”, in which Downie takes his lyrics to a dark place, hinting at deep-rooted national issues. Tragically Hip Will Remain Canada’s Own As one of Canada’s most loved bands, not even the finality of a ‘Last Tour’ can dampen Canadian pride in the Tragically Hip’s accomplishments. Part of the reason the music industry has recognized the value of the aesthetic quality of the band’s music is due to the need to expose rock, pop-rock, alternative, blues, and country music lovers to a more qualitative sound and quantitative lyric value. Tragically Hip’s ability to spotlight Canadian culture, history, and art as a truly unique culture, is what the band’s music style does best. The band has created a Canadian music enigma that draws out of music lovers the need to focus on deeply meaningful lyrics.
sage Canadian fans are drawn to with each Hip concert performance. This was proven as far back as July 1996, during their “Edenfest” tour where over 70,000 tickets were sold and another 20,000 uninvited fans attended, most of whom hopped fences or crept past Edenfest security at various points around the Mosport Park concert site. Their most recent record breaking 11.7 million viewers is proof that the popularity of the band ranks them as one of Canada’s most beloved bands of all time. The Great White North and the Music Industry The Tragically Hip’s popularity isn’t limited to young adults. Their music is appreciated by a diverse age group, most of whom retain the lyrics to the recordings on their library of albums. In 2004, the band provided half-time entertainment at Ottawa’s Frank Clair Stadium for the 92nd Grey Cup championship. In 1992, the band’s “Up to Here” was recognized as a Canadian Music Industry “Diamond Certified Album” which sold over one million CDs, tapes, or LPs. The Great White North and its Music Industry recognition is yet another example of why the Tragically Hip’s status as one of Canada’s most beloved bands, remains intact. The Tragically Hip’s Other Contributions As busy as the band may be, band members have always honored their commitment to give back in kind. Beginning with a performance in their hometown of Kingston, “The Hip,” as they are often referred to by Canadian fans, has also brought a deeper awareness of Canadian culture by uniting the country in a diverse music style that reminded the city of Toronto of its struggle with historic racism, the sad story of Maple Leafs’ player, Bill Barilko, and the murder of Quebec’s Deputy Premier, Pierre La Porte, during the crisis of 1970. Other contributions of one of Canada’s most loved bands to Canada’s music industry include numerous single recordings. Their willingness to use music as a force of energy helps Canadians discover their deepest roots. In their recording, “New Orleans is Sinking,” the lyrics tell of the gradual sinking of New Orleans. Yet, when Hurricane Katrina nearly destroyed New Orleans, the Hip immediately pulled the long standing record from circulation out of respect for the victims of the disaster. The band also took part in “Another Roadside Attraction” tour in the 90s which raised money for charity. It was with heavy hearts that fans recently said goodbye to Canada’s most loved band, but they remain optimistic that Gord Downie and The Hip, aren’t finished yet! As one of Canada’s most prolific performing bands with an edgy music style, the Tragically Hip’s recordings since being signed with MCA in the 80’s include these best-selling albums: √ Fully Completely √ In Violet Light √ World Container

ST. PETERSBURG nyone interested in Russian culture and history needs to visit St. Petersburg. As the former Governor of Saint Petersburg, Valentina Matviyenko said, “Saint Petersburg is a gem of world culture and Russia’s most European city.” Saint Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and embodies the contradictions that have always been at the heart of Russian identity.
A
A Three Hundred Year Old Heritage Peter the Great founded Saint Petersburg in May of 1703, eager to showcase that Russia had, under his leadership, emerged from the dark ages and become a great eastern European power. As he had intended, the city’s architecture reflects the momentous cultural, economic, military, and political reforms his reign introduced to the Russian people. St. Petersburg was built from the ground up, in only 8 years and stands as testament to its acceptance as a cultural center. Thus, if you are lucky enough to travel to this city, you may feel as if you are visiting a European 3 0

capital with a visible Russian influence and ‘flair’. Art and Cultural Center Without question, the first place to visit should be the State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace. The Hermitage ranks with the Louvre as one of the top art museums in the world. With over 3 million exhibits, this museum will keep visitors enthralled for much more than one day. Here you will be able to visit the famous Winter Palace, which used to be where Russian emperors would stay. The art collections are too numerous to list, as they range from Prehistoric and Egyptian art, all the way through the Italian Renaissance, to French Impressionism and beyond. Spectacular Architecture One of the most stunning churches in this city is the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. This church was built on the site where Alexander II was assassinated in 1881. wounded by a bomb. The interesting thing about this church is that it was designed with references to traditional Russian medieval architecture. So, for a taste of some really stunning Russian Orthodox architecture, put this Cathedral on your ‘mustsee’ list as one of the places to be sure to visit. Beautiful Women and Great Vodka On a lighter note, for those just looking for a great place to meet Russian girls and sample some of the
finest Vodka in the world, Saint Petersburg is also a fantastic destination. The city is home to St. Petersburg State University, the oldest and largest University in Russia, so it attracts ladies from all across the country. Women also flock to this cultural hub for work, performing arts, night-life, sight-seeing and of course shopping. Russian ladies far outnumber men in this city, so if you are just looking for a good place to do some sight-seeing (‘girl-watching’) and/or partying, St. Petersburg will not disappoint.

Howard Schultz, starting life as any other ordinary child, would become CEO of the hugely famous coffeehouse chain everyone knows today: Starbucks. Read on to discover his life history and how he took his business to the ‘next level’.
Childhood and Education Howard was born in Brooklyn New York in 1953 and was the first of three children born to Fred and Elaine Schultz, a Jewish couple. When Howard was 3, the family moved out of his Grandmother’s and into their own apartment in the Bayview projects in Canarsie, southeast Brooklyn. With Howard’s dad frequently changing jobs, the family struggled to make ends meet. A playground and Basketball court were the neighborhood kids’ primary entertainment and Howard developed into quite the young athlete, both on and off the basketball court. When Howard was 7, his father Fred broke his ankle working as a delivery driver for a local diaper service. The incident was financially devastating and in the months that followed, the family could barely afford to survive. This left an indelible impression on Howard, as he was forced to witness his father’s grief and loss of dignity. Young Howard recognized this as being due to the indignant treatment by his 3 2

father’s employer. This lingering childhood memory would cause Howard to evolve into a uniquely considerate leader. This experience, among others associated with growing up in the projects, provided Howard with the motivation to strive for a better life. Howard remembers playing sports as a kid “from dusk till dawn”, determined to leverage sports as his way out of the projects. In high school, Howard joined the football team and gained recognition as one of the best players when he was promoted to team quarterback. Howard’s athleticism earned him a scholarship at Northern Michigan University where, despite being unable to maintain his position on the NMU team, he nonetheless graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications. Early Career After University, Howard remained in Michigan and took a job working at a local ski lodge. After a year, he returned MEN’S

to New York and landed a job at Xerox, where they enlisted him in their in-house sales training program. After he completed his training, Howard’s first position was as a lead generator, ‘cold-calling in-person’, door-to-door in midtown Manhattan. Howard soon became a full-fledged sales representative and was earning a $75k annual salary. By 1979, Howard had become restless in his sales job. Seeking more of a challenge, he successfully applied at Perstorp, a subsidiary of Hammarplast, the Swedish housewares company. After traveling to Sweden for 3 months of training, he returned to the US and was immediately transferred to their Building Supplies division in North Carolina. Howard spent ten miserable months in North Carolina selling extruded plastic parts before threatening to quit. Rather than lose him, the company transferred him to New York, making him General Sales Manager of the Hammarplast Housewares division and VP of US Operations. There, Howard managed twenty sales representatives engaged in the sales and Marketing of stylish Swedish Kitchen equipment such as coffee makers and the like. A couple of years into this position, Howard had noticed that one of their clients, Starbucks (a small fledgling coffee bean retail shop in Seattle, WA) was buying more coffee makers than Macy’s, and more plastic cone filters than any other customer. This sparked Howard’s curiosity, leading him to travel to Seattle to meet with the owner of Starbucks. He recounts, “When I walked in this store for the first time - I know this sounds really hokey - I knew I was home,” adding, “I had never had a good cup of coffee. I met the founders of the company, and really heard for the first time the story of great coffee ... I just said, ‘God, this is something I’ve been looking for my whole professional life.’” Their knowledge of coffee was impressive and although they only had a few stores, Howard expressed interest in working with them. One year later he became Director of Marketing. The Official Start of Modern Starbucks When Howard started working for Starbucks in 1982, they only sold coffee beans and coffee makers, not cups of fresh-brewed coffee. It wasn’t until Howard Schultz was visiting Milan Italy in 1983 that he was taken aback by the vast number of espresso bars. He couldn’t help but notice how the Italians seemed to enjoy a romance with espresso. Howard was drawn by the passionate connection Italians had to the beverage but more importantly, the warm, social atmosphere exuded by these cozy coffee bars. Italians were drawn to these cafés by the sense of community similar to the way Brits are drawn to local pubs - connecting socially. He couldn’t wait to get back to Seattle to discuss his vision for the future of Starbucks and to present the idea of expanding the ‘bean shops’ into ‘coffee bars’! To Howard’s dismay, the owners didn’t share his enthusiasm H O T

for expanding “the bean business” into what they termed “the restaurant business.” Howard, not one to give up, was finally allowed to incorporate a coffee bar into the build-out of a new location the company had planned. It was an instant ‘home-run’. With hundreds of fresh roast aficionados visiting daily, Starbucks’ customers had already coined the phrase “coffeehouse” in reference to the new location. Though instead of joining in Howard’s enthusiasm, Starbucks’ owners shied away from the successful experiment saying, “Oh no, that’s not for us“.
HOWARD SCHULTZ ALWAYS IMPROVED HIS COMPANY
Disappointed and not sharing their apprehension of ‘getting too big’, Howard left Starbucks in 1985 with plans to open the first coffee bar of his own. However, Howard knew he needed $400k to establish his first location and without access to that kind of money, would need to seek investors. One investment came from an unlikely source, Jerry Baldwin and Gordon Bowker, two of the Starbucks owners. With a few other investors, including a Doctor who invested $100k, Howard had raised the necessary capital to open his first coffeehouse, ‘Il Giornale’, in 1986. One year later, in 1987, Starbucks owners had decided to focus on ‘Pete’s Coffee and Tea’, which they had recently purchased, and decided to sell the Starbucks retail chain to Howard Schultz for $3.8M. Another round of financing, and the new deal was consummated. Howard then re-branded his ‘Il Giornale’ stores under the Starbucks logo and opened the first two Starbucks stores outside of the Seattle metropolitan area. With one store in Chicago, IL and another in Vancouver, BC, Canada, Starbucks had 17 retail ‘coffeehouses’ in total. By 1991, they opened their first airport location at Seattle’s International Airport, and Howard had 116 stores in total. In 1992, when Howard took his company public, he already owned 165 corporate locations and would double that number within the next 2 years. By 1996 they had over 1,000 stores and opened their first locations outside North America with a store in Japan and another one in Singapore. The Starbucks Set of Rules Before even beginning the incorporation process, Howard Schultz made a clear set of rules for the company to follow, a process which is highly recommended by any marketing consultant. Eventually, these proven turnaround strategies became the corporate code. The code focused on the importance and benefits of organization, as well as the need to constantly improve the coffee recipe and/or the company’s products. MEN’S

coffee bars by building a greater sense of community at local Starbucks locations. As you might guess, this strengthened customer loyalty and increased sales even more. Howard has created a strong company spirit within the Starbucks organization. Leading by example, Howard also rewards and encourages employees to take a “pride-of-ownership” approach toward identifying and implementing strategies that work. Starbucks Becomes the World’s No. 1 Coffee Business
Howard Schultz also strongly believed, and still believes, that the profits made today, secure a company’s future tomorrow. As a matter of fact, Howard Schultz is always looking for new ways to continually improve his company. As an example, he began selling soft and cold drinks in 1994 when he noticed a dip in sales during summer months. Overall, Howard has taught us that taking a business to the next level requires constant “tweaking”, whether ‘fine-tuning’ the menu or slightly improving each of the products, one at a time. Howard has demonstrated that being better than everyone else, requires a relentless and unwavering commitment to improvement day-in and day-out, every step of the way. The Spirit of Starbucks Despite all the competition Starbucks faced, Howard Schultz has maintained his, and his company’s, integrity by retaining the same morals and prices. Regardless of the competition, he continued to steadily increase sales. Interestingly, he has always had confidence in the company logo, saying that - all things being equal - customers will choose Starbucks over other stores if only because of the enticing Starbucks logo. However, Howard has never been one to rest on his laurels. He has always adhered to the principal that a company not constantly pressing forward, is inadvertently falling behind. In fact, he realized that all of the Italian-style coffeehouses that were rushing to the marketplace to compete with Starbucks were too small and therefore didn’t encourage, and couldn’t sustain, socialization. As a result, Howard decided to play off of his competitors’ lack of insight into his original epiphany. By increasing the size of new Starbucks stores with more lounge chairs and coffee tables, Howard drew consumers’ attention to the disparity between Starbucks and the other 3 4

In 1996, Howard Schultz made the decision to expand the company outside of the United States, turning Starbucks into an international company. The first foreign storefronts were Japan and Singapore, moving into Korea, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Sweden, and Israel. Soon Starbucks was operating 2,400 stores in the United States, with another 350 locations across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Canada, Nonetheless, Howard set a goal to open 1,200 new international stores by April of 2000. In 2000, Howard decided to take a bit of a break from being the company’s acting President and CEO. Although taking a much needed hiatus, Howard Schultz was no doubt the impetus pressing the Starbucks brand forward from behind the scenes. By 2005, Starbucks was operating over 10,000 coffeehouses world-wide. Although he was light years ahead of his competitors, Howard normally never let his guard down. Unfortunately, taking a break from the “front lines” was to prove comparable to resting on his laurels. Howard Steps Back into the Driver’s Seat In early 2007, seeing the early signs of a pending sales slump, Howard started to re-evaluated the past 7 years to identify any long-term, underlying causes. Three serious issues presented themselves to Howard, who from a backseat or behind the scenes position - although still Chairman of the Board - identified some major problems that required immediate resolutions. Issue No. 1.) In recent years, Starbucks was converting from manual espresso machines to fully automated machines in an effort to increase speed, consistency, and efficacy. However, these new automated machines were much taller and had inadvertently blocked the “line-of-sight” between the customer and the Barista. So, customers could no longer see their specialty coffee being prepared. Issue No. 2.) During that same time, the company had made a decision to start using “flavor-locked” packaging in order to preserve “fresh roasted” flavor. Howard explains, “We achieved fresh roasted bagged coffee, but at what cost? The loss of aroma - perhaps the most powerful non-verbal signal we had in our stores; the loss of our people scooping fresh coffee from the bins and grinding it fresh in front of the customer, and once again stripping the store of tradition and our heritage? ” MEN’S
L IFESTYL E
M A G A ZINE
Once again, Howard demonstrates his business acumen with his uncanny ability to identify what his customers want. These two issues, each significant on their own, combined could have sabotaged years of work by undermining the very essence of Howard’s initial Starbucks “coffeehouse” heritage. He was ‘spot on’, his customers could no longer see the Barista creating their personalized masterpiece, but that, combined with the absence of the familiar aroma of fresh beans being ground prior to each manual espresso, meant the Starbucks stores had lost that coffee bar appear. In 2008, Howard made the decision to take back the reins and assume the company’s leadership role once more as President and CEO. In an effort to restore what he called “the distinctive Starbucks experience”. During the company’s continued rapid expansion, Howard started implementing significant turn-around strategies. The recession in 2008 made things even tougher. In fact, Howard had to make the decision to close a total of 900 stores to ensure the overall company’s survival long-term. Despite this, Starbucks has continued to grow into what it is today, proving Howard to be an effective marketing consultant and turn-around man. As of 2015, Starbucks reportedly had amassed over 23,000 stores world-wide. This year, Howard is finally prepared to take on Milan, Italy - this location will be Starbucks true test.

Family Life Aside from his business accomplishments, Howard Schultz married Sheri Kersch (Schultz) and they have lived since 1982 in Seattle with their two children, their son Jordan and their daughter Addison. Howard has also written two books, describing his life and success in great detail. Overview of our ‘Portrait of a CEO’ As of now, Howard Schultz’s net worth is estimated at 2.9 billion dollars. When it comes to taking a business to the next level, Howard Schultz is a prime example of a man from whom we all can learn. He represents the CEO that most business owners and founders alike would be most likely to want to emulate. A Jewish kid from the projects, Howard is probably more self-aware of the magnitude of his accomplishments than any of us observers might be. So, he certainly needs no kudos from us. Howard would probably be the first to admit, that there comes a time in each and every business owner’s life, where re-evaluating our origin, history, successes, failures, goals, products, services, partners, employees, attitude, company spirit, and lastly - but most importantly - our customers, is sometimes necessary in order to regain a renewed sense of what is truly vital to ensure our continued success.

HERE’S WHY...
Bentley has been producing some of the finest examples of rolling art since W. O. Bentley rolled the first specimen out of their London factory in 1919. From the beginning, W. O. Bentley was intent on pursuing both performance and luxury, an ambitious undertaking considered by most - to this day - as a contradiction in terms.
display your current speed in large bold digits, or browse your phone-book and initiate (or answer) hands-free calls. Browse your playlists or display the current song title, adjust cruise-control settings (you’ll marvel at Bentley’s impressive 3D-style radar display that warns when obstacles or vehicles are getting close and adjusts speed to maintain safe distances), select the 3D-style navigation map, monitor vehicle sensor zones, get maintenance info, adjust vehicle settings and much more.
A Powerful Racing Pedigree
It’s the driver’s personal miniature ‘cliff-notes’ version of the large primary infotainment system located above the center console. However this smaller redundant version allows the driver to browse, access and display information in his line-of-sight, thus reducing the chance of a fatal accident. Especially when so many automobile collisions have been attributed to driver distractions such as texting, operating
The first Bentley to sport the ‘Flying-B’ insignia was a 3.5 L test car built in 1920. The following year, Bentley secured its first racing victory at the Brooklands Motor Circuit and also delivered its first production car to the company’s very first customer. Yet by the end of the 1920’s, Bentley Motors (barely celebrating its first decade in business) had secured five victories at La Mans, earning the Flying-B her reputation for Grand Tour racing performance and world class luxury. Today, with almost a century of automobile manufacturing experience, Bentley continues to produce some of the most powerful engines in the automotive Industry. Custom built engines in V8 and W12 configurations propel these luxurious 6,000 lb beasts to speeds in excess of 200 mph, in seconds!
hand-held devices or navigating console mounted systems. Even the paddle-shifters are meticulously thought-out. The Bentley’s paddles remain stationary (column-mounted not wheel-mounted) so you never have trouble executing a shift, even when drifting (or palm-steering) through tight corners. Bentley designers deserve kudos for thinking of everything as do the craftsmen for their meticulous attention to detail.
GT3-R - A Racetrack Inspired Vehicle
A One-of-a-Kind Experience
Bentley knows racing and the Continental GT3-R delivers the technological precision and horsepower it takes to win at the track. This road racing GT3 propels the driver from 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds flat, thanks to a 572 hp V8 that produces over 615 lbs of torque and transfers power to the rear wheels through an 8-speed computerized transmission that ensures quick paddle-shifts every time. Style and comfort also rank high among the GT3-R’s finer points, as Grand Touring is about much more than simply getting somewhere faster.
As always, Bentley delivers an experience that is as rich in technology, as it is in luxury and performance. If a WIFI hot spot is important to you because you need to access emails while in transit, don’t worry, Bentley has you covered. Do you like your music clear, crisp, and loud? No problem. Bentley has partnered with Naim, a well-known audio company, that has a long history producing high-fidelity sound equipment, most notably used at Abbey Road studios where Pink Floyd & The Beatles recorded many albums. The GT3-R’s 1,100 watt Naim audio system - engineered to deliver the sound of a live performance within the cabin - is the pièce de résistance that, when combined with Bentley’s luxurious refinements and superior performance, enables the GT3-R to go beyond “thoroughly invigorating” and ascend to a level of enjoyment more akin to “a sublimely therapeutic driving experience”.
The luxury cabin envelops its occupants in hand-stitched leather and carbon fiber trim. Driver & passenger are held snugly in place with custom Beluga hide sport seats that are more comfortable with every lap of the racetrack, but are truly appreciated during rush-hour or long road-trips. Meticulous Attention To Detail The driver’s cockpit sports a large analog tachometer and speedometer set on either side of two smaller gages with a digital screen immediately above those. Info is accessed via an easy-to-use ‘click-able’ scroll-wheel conveniently situated next to your thumb for quick browsing. ‘Scroll and click’ to H O T

Let’s start by saying the title is a bit of a lie. There are so many cool apps available today that it’s impossible for us to pick just one. Given that, here are several apps that every man should have on his smart phone.
Tie-A-Tie Deluxe App
Stachetastic
Whether you rarely wear a tie or just want to add more flair than usual, this app is perfect. This app provides step-by-step instructions on how to tie seven different knots. It also tells you which type of shirt collar works best with which one. ‘Tie-a-Tie’ deluxe will also tell you which events are appropriate for which fancy knot so you can dress to impress. This app is tailor-made for the man who wants to look perfectly polished for any occasion.
Weber’s On the Grill App Not every man is a grill master by nature, but none of your guests will know that when you use the ‘On the Grill’ app from Weber. Simply input your cut of meat and its thickness and this app will tell you exactly how to grill it. The app also includes over 250 grill recipes and tons of grilling tips and videos to teach you what you need to know about the manliest way to cook meat.
One of the coolest apps out there, ‘Stachetastic’ is the ultimate guide to facial hair. Although it won’t help you if you struggle to grow more than peach fuzz, this app will tell you what to do with any facial hair you can grow. You’ll learn what type of mustache and beard will work best for the shape of your face and how to create it. Time-saving feature – use the app to superimpose your desired ‘stache over your picture and then send it to social media sites for opinions before you start growing.
120 Sports
If you love sports, you’ll love ‘120 Sports’. Most sports apps leave a lot to be desired, but ‘120 Sports’ is one of the coolest apps for tracking games. With a clean interface and smooth operation, this app makes it easy to track scores and get all the sports talk and news a man could want.
Of course, there are many other awesome apps on the market too that can help you with all kinds of tasks. PMS Buddy, for example, can help you track the menstrual cycle of the woman in your life so you know when to come home with chocolate and flowers. Distiller shows you which whiskey is right for the occasion while PS Dept lets someone else do your shopping for you so you can avoid the mall. Spend a little time at the app store and you’ll find lots of helpful apps that can make life a bit easier. H O T

S PO R TS decided to incorporate a new parallel league [to the NHA] as a measure to get rid of then Toronto ‘Blueshirts’ (and Shamrocks) team owner, Eddie Livingstone. Apparently, the NHA’s existing constitution prevented the other NHA owners from voting him out, so they created a brand new league and extended NHL franchise offers to four of the five NHA teams (themselves), excluding ‘Blueshirts’ owner Eddie Livingstone. Livingstone had purchased the Toronto ‘Blueshirts’ team - his 2nd NHA franchise - without first acquiring league permission, and then done a few more things that pissed off some of the other team owners. In any event, Eddie’s Blueshirts players, under a temporary franchise (lease) were transferred to The Arena Company, owners of the Arena Gardens. Even in the midst of all the ongoing turmoil, the team came out strong in their first season to win the first ever ‘NHL Stanley Cup’ in 1917. After a couple of tumultuous seasons as the ‘Toronto Arenas’, the Arena Company had to suspend its operations in February 1919, due to mounting legal bills from a law suit filed by Livingstone. The team franchise was sold in February 1919 to a group of investors who renamed the team the Toronto ‘St. Patricks’, or ‘St. Pats’ as they were known. By then, the 1917 Stanley Cup team was in shambles as the Arena Company had been forced to sell off its best players to defend the law suit (ironically, Livingstone was suing to get his players back, in addition to damages). After rebuilding the team, the St. Patricks won the 1922 NHL Stanley Cup.
or 100 years, Toronto, Canada has been home to one of the two oldest teams in the National Hockey League (NHL). Throughout its history, this team franchise has celebrated 3 different names, many of hockey’s legends, 13 Stanley Cup trophies and a community-rich organization. (Five different names and 15 Stanley Cups, if you trace the team’s ‘roots’ back to the ‘Toronto Pros’ in 1906 and include the 2 Cups won by the ‘Blueshirts’ - the team that formed the basis of the first official Toronto Maple Leafs franchise, the Toronto ‘Arenas’ ).
F
Tumultuous Beginnings The National Hockey League (NHL) was formed in 1917 by four of five teams in the National Hockey Association (NHA) - or, National Hockey Association of Canada. They were the Montreal Canadiens, the Montreal Wanderers, the Quebec Bulldogs, and Ottawa Senators. The four teams’ franchise owners met in November that year and

It wasn’t until 1927 - after hockey legend Conn Smythe assembled a small group of investors to purchase the franchise for $160,000, closing the deal on February 14 (Valentine’s Day), 1927 - that the team’s name was changed to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Having purchased the franchise and serving as its head coach, Smythe worked hard to rebuild the organization. As the years marched on, the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise would become one of the best in the world. They would go on to win three Stanley Cup trophies in a row and hold the record for the most championship titles, a record that their rivals, the Montreal Canadiens, had previously held. The Leafs proudly retained this record for a decade. In 1961, Conn Smythe sold most of his shares in the team, or so he thought, to his son. In actual fact, his shares were purchased by a group com-

prised of three investors that included his son, Stafford Smythe, Toronto Marlboros president, Harold Ballard, and Toronto Telegram owner, John Bassett. Smythe completed the sale of the franchise for $2.3M, representing a hefty return on his investment. The Toronto Maple Leafs found themselves once again under new ownership, and surged forward again, winning another three Stanley Cup trophies in a row led by hockey legends captain George Armstrong and coach Punch Imlach. Celebrated Hockey Legends For the Toronto Maple Leafs, the quest for the Stanley Cup trophy has led the team down a few bumpy roads of wins and losses. However, the Toronto Maple Leafs have always picked themselves up after a really bad season and improved the organization with new player talent, new management or a combination of both. Over the past 100 years, the Maple Leafs have attracted hockey legends such as George Armstrong, Bobby Baun, Dave Keon, Darryl Sittler, Curtis Throughout its history Joseph, Mats Sundin, Doug Gilmour, and Wenthis team franchise has del Clark.

Darryl Sittler ended the season with 100 points, scoring 41 goals before the team even made it to the playoffs. Ten percent of those points, Darryl earned in a single game (February 7th) - in only 60-minutes of play - against the Boston Bruins. In the 1977-78 season, Darryl beat his own 1975-76 season’s scoring record by earning 117 points, a record that would remain intact until 1993 when Doug Gilmour finally surpassed it. However, Darryl’s record for scoring 10 points in one game, has yet to be broken and this year (February 7th, 2016) marked the 40th anniversary for what, with each passing year, is proving to be an even greater achievement than Darryl himself could have ever anticipated. Darryl Sittler will forever be remembered as one of the greatest NHL hockey legends. Between 1957 and 2007, thirteen different team members have donned the Maple Leafs jersey bearing the No. 27, but ask any die-hard Maple Leaf’s fan who No. 27 was, and they will undoubtedly blurt out “ Darryl Sittler!” H O T

In the 1992-93 season, the Maple Leafs posted a winning record in the regular season, finishing third in their division. Hockey legends Doug Gilmour and Wendel Clark led the team in scoring, with each player posting significant points for the season. The Toronto Maple Leafs were poised to go after the Stanley Cup once more. By 1998, management had recognized a large gap in talent and took the steps necessary to fill the position. They found another hockey legend, Curtis Joseph, who would become an immovable force for the Leafs as they made the trip back to the finals. Into the Millennium In the midst of the 2000’s, Toronto’s coaching team knew they needed to make some drastic changes. One of the major changes came when the Maple Leafs signed Phil Kessel in a trade with the Boston Bruins for a first round draft pick. Kessel was the first of many hockey legends to be found and cultivated over a short time period. The Leafs would also sign future hockey legends Dion Phaneuf, Keith Aulie, Fredrik Sjostrom, and goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere. In 2010, the Maple Leafs installed Dion Phaneuf as the team captain, hoping to make it back to the playoffs, but it wasn’t until 2013 that this would become a reality. Leading the team was James Remier, who stopped 43 of 44 shots in game 4. Dion Phaneuf and Phil Kessel would each post a goal to keep the series going in game 6, forcing a game 7. In the battle of the decade, the Maple Leafs dominated the game and went into the 3rd period with a 4-1 lead. With a comeback by the Bruins, the game went into overtime ending with a heartbreaking loss. Looking To The Future In 2014, the Leafs hired Brendan Shanahan as the new President of Hockey Operations. His first priority was to reevaluate every aspect of the franchise. Immediately following the season, he discovered many weaknesses and conducted a complete house cleaning. After a full revamp of the franchise, the Maple Leafs are, today, in an excellent position to acquire new talent, develop new onice and off-ice systems, and off season training to come out strong for the beginning of the upcoming season. Heading into the 2016-17 season, Shanahan is confident in his team once again. With new coaching staff, a renewed sense of team bonding, high caliber scouting and a top quality training staff, the Toronto Maple Leafs are excited about the upcoming season. The NHL, also Celebrating 100 years, has announced plans for a commemorative season in which the Toronto Maple Leafs will play the Detroit Red Wings at BMO Field in Toronto on January 1, 2017. It has been dubbed the “Centennial Classic” and will mark 90 years since the first meeting of these two franchises in 1927. MEN’S

February 27th, 1877 First Written Rules of Hockey
& James George Aylwin Creighton
The Montreal Gazette publishes an article entitled “Hockey on Ice”, written by James Creighton (also an active journalist/correspondent for The Gazette), wherein Creighton lists the First Official Written Rules for Organized Indoor Ice Hockey. The rules appear almost identical to existing field hockey rules that have already been published prior to this date. However, these are the rules they have been adhering to for the past few years.

The first game is organized by James Creighton and takes place at the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal, Canada, where Creighton is a club member and serves as a figure skating judge. Creighton, originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, has been organizing informal, early-morning games of Shinny among athletic club members, and McGill University students. Anticipating a large turnout (The event is announced in The Montreal Gazette) and amid concerns that a lively game ball might fly up into the crowd, a flat circular 1” x 3” piece of wood (a puck) is introduced for the very first time. It is proposed that a flat piece of wood may stick to the ice surface and be easier to control (prior to this, lacrosse balls are the traditional choice for playing Shinny, Ricket and similar outdoor recreational variations of Shinty, Field Hockey, Hurling and Bandy). The perimeter of the 80 ft. x 204 ft. Victoria Rink is defined by a wooden base-board, rising 8” to form the inside edge of a boardwalk that completely encircles the rink. Over 1,500 spectators amass, standing atop the wooden platform, only inches above the ice surface, crowding the edge of, and encompassing, the entire rink. There are nine players and one goal tender on each team. Players are not allowed to pass the puck forward and the puck is not to leave the ice. There is no net behind either of the two sets of flag poles, spaced 8-feet apart, that mark the goals at either end. The goalie has no protective gear and is not allowed to drop to his knees to prevent the puck from scoring. Only one fight occurs, after the 60-minute hockey game, and is a row between players and spectators. A group of onlookers (primarily club members, waiting to use the rink for pleasure skating), become agitated after they notice the ‘post-game’ damage to the ice surface, words are exchanged and tempers escalate.

However, they are supposed to challenge last year’s Stanley Cup winner, The Montreal Hockey Club (MHC), and this creates controversy. The Montreal Victorias have just won the AHAC league title, therefore they’re expecting to become the Stanley Cup Champions, but the “Challenge” match is between Queen’s University and MHC. The Stanley Cup Trustees decide that if the Montreal HC wins the ‘challenge match’ by successfully defending their Title, the Montreal Victorias will be the Stanley Cup Champions. The Montreal Hockey Club defeats Queen’s 5-to-1, successfully defending its title and eliminating the ‘challenger’, only to effectively deliver the Cup’s Trustees from an uncomfortable situation. MHC wins the Stanley Cup Challenge Game, yet their cross-town rivals, the Victorias, are crowned the 1895 Stanley Cup Champions.

Turn of the 20th Century
The four teams that withdrew from the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada (AHAC), meet for a second time to formally organize The Canadian Amateur Hockey League (CAHL). They invite the remaining (5th) team, the Montreal Shamrocks, to join the league’s roster and effectively ensure the demise of the AHAC. The new CAHL then adopts the constitution of the soon-to-be defunct AHAC.

The ECAHA is Founded
The IPHL Folds
The Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association (ECAHA) is founded by the six top teams from two separate leagues, two teams (The Montreal Wanderers and The Ottawa Hockey Club) from the FAHL and four CAHA teams (Montreal HC, Montreal Shamrocks, Montreal Victorias, & Quebec HC) CAHL teams. With spectator attendance on the rise, these six teams are looking to maximize revenues and investigate creative ways to introduce professionalism into their organizations. By 1908, the league will shed its amateur status, but by 1909, the league will be dissolved.
With Canadian Amateur Leagues converting into professional leagues, the best IPHL players are being lured back to their home towns. The International Professional Hockey League (IPHL) folds after four of the teams experience trouble recruiting players for the 1907 - 1908 season.
1906 The TPHL is Established The Timiskaming Professional Hockey League (TPHL) is founded as a minor professional hockey league financed by wealthy mine owners in the Tri-town mining area near Lake Timiskaming in northern Ontario. The league is one of few in existence where its players are paid to play and thus, serves to provide the impetus to owners, players and fans for a high-stakes gambling venue. Team owners start luring well-known ‘Ringers’ up from the southern leagues, to play on their team for a single game, in exchange for handsome compensation. As a result, takes [winning pots] grow considerably, with one notable game in 1909 [Haileybury Cobalt] which is rumored to generate a pot in excess of $10,000.

The National Hockey Association (NHA) is Formed
The ECHA (or ECAHA), presumably the foremost league, is the current host league of the Stanley Cup. Ambrose O’Brien, co-founder of the Timiskaming Professional Hockey League (TPHL), is owner of two TPHL teams, the Haileybury Comets and Cobalt Silver Kings, and one Federal Hockey League (FHL) team, the Renfrew Creamery Kings. As last season’s FHL Champions, the Renfrew team recently made application to the Stanley Cup trustees, ‘challenging’ the ECHA Champs for the Stanley Cup and were turned down. O’Brien, attending the ECHA meeting, is seeking the team’s admission into the ECHA in order to compete for the Stanley Cup. However, the Renfrew team is prohibited from joining. O’Brien’s rejection is soon overshadowed by a major turn of events. Three of the four existing Eastern Canada Hockey Association (ECHA) teams immediately resign from the league with plans to form a new league, the Canadian Hockey Association (CHA). This is being done to exclude the Montreal Wanderers from the [new] league. (With the recent sale of the Montreal Wanderers to P. J. Doran, the owner of Montreal’s Jubilee Rink, Doran has announced plans to move the Wanderers’ games from the Montreal Arena, to his [smaller] Jubilee Rink. The other teams have no interest in playing at the smaller venue, as it will yield fewer ticket sales and reduced revenues for visiting teams).
A private meeting takes place at 300 St. James Street, in Montreal, where two TPHL teams controlled by O’Brien, in cooperation with the Montreal Wanderers, form the National Hockey Association (NHA) and the league adopts the former constitution of the ECHA. O’Brien and Gardner decide to create a ‘francophone-only’ team, with an entire lineup of ‘Francophone’ players, to eventually be owned and managed by Francophones. To foster a sense of pride and garner loyalty amongst francophone fans, they decide to name the team “Les Canadiens”. They recognize that a Montreal-based ‘all-francophone’ team will likely fuel a ‘cross-town rivalry’ between the (predominantly) Anglophone Wanderers and the proposed Francophone-only “Les Canadiens”. On December 4th, 1909, O’Brien forms the ‘Les Canadiens’ franchise and immediately admits the team into the NHA.

The ‘Montreal Canadiens’ are Formalized O’Brien suspends the Cobalt Silver Kings, Haileybury Comets, and the ‘Les Canadiens’. O’Brien then transfers one of his franchises to George Kennedy, a famous Canadian Wrestler, Fight Promoter, Co-founder and Co-owner of Le Club Athlétique Canadien (CAC), to form the Montreal Canadiens and the team is then re-assembled with all the ‘Les Canadiens’ players. In 1908, Kennedy was unsuccessful in his attempt to purchase the Montreal Wanderers. Now, two years later, in an interview published in the Montreal Gazette, Kennedy expresses interest in acquiring an NHA franchise. He also alludes to his intent to file a legal action against the NHA, opposing their use of the name “Les Canadiens” which is an infringement of his “Le Club Athlétique Canadien” trademark, if he is unable to acquire the team. O’Brien and the NHA are agreeable and Kennedy gets the “Les Canadiens” NHA franchise, for $7,500 which he then renames to ‘ The Montreal Canadiens’ ( or, “Les Canadiens de Montreal”. )

All three just resigned from the Eastern Canada Hockey Association (ECHA) and are forming the CHA to exclude the Wanderers from the new league, eliminating the Jubilee Rink as a game venue. The Wanderers apply to join the CHA, but are rejected (supposedly unwilling to commit to the Montreal Arena). O’Brien is also in attendance and applies to join the CHA on behalf of his Renfrew team, still hoping to join the ranks of the de facto Stanley Cup Championship league. O’Brien’s CHA application is also rejected. Only two (2) additional teams are accepted, the Montreal Hockey Club, and Montreal Le National, an ‘all-francophone’ team. O’Brien, now having suffered a second rejection in less than a day, winds up in the lobby of the Windsor Hotel where he runs into Jimmy Gardner. Jimmy, a Wanderers player as well as the team representative, has also been maliciously excluded from both leagues in the same day, and is equally upset. O’Brien and Gardner strike up a conversation and ultimately, the two men decide to form a competing league of their own. 56 08

Toronto ‘Blueshirts’ Win Stanley Cup
Frank and Lester Patrick, both already Hockey Legends, decide to form the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) after their father, Joe Patrick, sells his British Columbia lumber business in January the same year. Although the league is not formally organized until December 7th, the Patrick brothers have been busy acquiring two arena sites earlier this year, and braking ground as early as April to start construction of both arenas. They are now approaching completion of both the Denman Arena in Vancouver, with 10,500 seats, and the Patrick Arena in Victoria, with 4,000 seats. They have been waiting impatiently for a confirmed date of completion and had not expected to make the coming season. However, as soon as it becomes apparent that the Arenas may be finished in time for the (1911-12) season, the Patricks move quickly to officially organize the league and immediately begin raiding the NHA for players. (The Patrick brothers quickly earn a reputation for successfully poaching players from other leagues).
The ‘Torontos’, or Toronto ‘Blueshirts’ as they are more commonly referred, defeat the Montreal ‘Canadiens’ in a two-game playoff (total goals, 6-2) to win their first Stanley Cup and finish first in the NHA League for the 1913-14 season.

‘Ontarios’ become ‘Shamrocks’
In 1914, after only one season, Tom Wall sells the struggling ‘Ontarios’ team to Eddie Livingstone, and after their first game in January, Livingstone renames the team the Toronto Shamrocks, or ‘Shamrocks’ as they become known. Eddie tells the press that the new name “reflects the players” since eight team members are of Irish decent. The Shamrocks finish the season in fifth place. Before Livingston purchased the franchise the team had just recently acquired NHA scoring champion Tommy Smith. Later this year, the PCHA claims Smith is their ‘property’, and that the NHA league had agreed to return him. Livingston is unwilling to release Smith, insisting he is the property of the Toronto franchise. This is understandable - from Livingstone’s perspective - as Eddie is convinced he just paid good money for the franchise, believing the price reflects the team’s all-star roster. On the other hand, the PCHA league is controlled by Lester and Frank Patrick, and the brothers organized their league’s charter so that the league is responsible for the players’ salaries, unlike the NHA (and other leagues) where individual team franchise owners are solely responsible for players’ salaries. Nonetheless, the Patrick brothers are furious and demand Smith be returned, under threat to raid the NHA of their best players (for the upcoming season) if the NHA does not acquiesce. 6 9

Livingstone Acquires ‘Blueshirts’
The NHA Suspends Toronto ‘Blueshirts’
Just before the start of the 1914-15 NHA season, Toronto ‘Shamrocks’ owner Eddie Livingstone, agrees to purchase the Toronto ‘Blueshirts’ franchise from the current owner, Frank Robinson, who had put the Blueshirts up for sale after enlisting in the Canadian military. However, Livingstone agreed to the purchase without first obtaining the NHA league’s permission. The NHA board objects, saying it doesn’t want one (1) owner to control two (2) franchises. In response, Livingston agrees to sell the ‘Shamrocks’ franchise, but the NHA only gives Livingstone until November 20th to do so (literally only weeks). Before Livingstone can sell the Shamrocks team, he will be forced to raid his Shamrocks roster for players to fill holes in his newly acquired ‘Blueshirts’ franchise lineup.
At a meeting that does not include Eddie Livingston, the NHA, consisting of the owners of the other four franchises, vote to suspend the ‘Blueshirts’ franchise. This is done under the guise of reducing the number of teams in the league to an even number of teams. The Toronto players are to be placed in a “lottery” and distributed among the other four teams for the foreseeable future. At some point, the players are to be returned to Toronto upon reinstatement of the Toronto franchise.

‘Blueshirts’ Offered to the ‘Highest Bidder’ On February 13th, 1917, Eddie Livingston issues a statement that the Toronto Blueshirts franchise is for sale to the highest bidder, and that he is “done with the NHA”. Livingstone announces his plans to work on establishing a new Hockey league in the United States as well as opening several arenas across the US.
The Patricks (PCHA) Raid Toronto for Players
March 9th, 1917
The Patrick brothers organize the Seattle ‘Metropolitans’ as an expansion team for their PCHA. The Patricks, looking to make good on their threat to raid the NHA of its players, ‘zero-in’ on the Toronto ‘Blueshirts’ team and Toronto’s (1913-14 season) Stanley Cup Championship roster. Specifically targeting the best of Livingstone’s ‘Blueshirts’, they successfully raid the team for five of its seven ‘two-time’ Stanley Cup winning players. The players that agree to leave the ‘Blueshirts’ in lieu of attractive PCHA salaries (to join Seattle) are leading scorers Cully Wilson and Frank Foyston, star goaltender Hap Holmes, and key players Jack Walker and Eddie Carpenter. Livingstone, left with only 2 Blueshirts players, Cameron and McGiffin, transfers his ‘Shamrocks’ players to the ‘Blueshirts’ team to in order to fill the holes in his lineup from the Patricks’ raid. Livingston, closing-in on the NHA deadline to sell his [now empty] Shamrocks franchise, is unable to sell by November 20th and the NHA seizes his franchise and ‘shelves’ it.

The 228th (Northern Fusiliers) Battalion Joins NHA
With so many Canadian casualties suffered already due to the First World War, Canada has been experiencing a drop in enlistment. Although conscription efforts have been increased, the Canadian Armed Forces are looking to find creative ways to boost popularity and increase voluntary sign-ups. It is hoped that a Hockey Team, populated with well-known ‘enlisted’ sports figures, might popularize the Military among young men ‘coming of age’. The NHA is more than happy to grant the military a temporary franchise to even up the number of teams in the league and replace the dormant Shamrocks franchise as the second Toronto area team. They are hoping to restore revenues for the visiting franchise owners, who were previously counting on two scheduled “away games” to offset travel costs for each trip to Toronto.
On March 9, 1917, Livingstone launches a lawsuit against the NHA and its member organizations, as well as filing for an injunction to prevent the owners from moving their teams to another league. Although Livingstone is clearly justified in his suspicions, and merely attempting to prevent the fraudulent conveyance of league assets, nonetheless he is unsuccessful in obtaining his injunction.
October 25th, 1917 - The Toronto Daily Star The Toronto Daily Star prints a story with the above headline on October 25th, 1917. The Quebec Telegraph has reportedly released the story first, and reporting on the background events leading up to the story, the Telegraph interviews Mike Quinn, the manager of the Quebec Bulldogs. Quinn, when asked about the NHA’s decision to suspend the Blueshirts in February, says that the Toronto Club had been given three weeks to ‘separate itself from Livingstone’ (back in January 1917) or, if the club did not comply, the NHA would simply operate the league without a Toronto team. The article quotes Mike Quinn as saying that the Toronto Club failed to respond by the deadline. Interestingly, this article appears almost one full month prior to the formal announcement, on November 26th, wherein the NHA will formally cite other reasons for their decision to suspend league operations.

The NHA Suspends its Operations
1917
The NHA annual meeting is held on November 22nd and one of the main topics up for discussion, is how the Board can formally oust Livingstone from the National Hockey Association. They soon realize that the NHA’s constitution was written in a way that does not permit Livingstone to be voted out of the league. In light of this, the four team owners elect to suspend league operations for the 1917-18 season. However, they do so only after first planning to form a brand new league, one that Livingstone will be excluded from. They agree to meet again in secret, in less than one week’s time, to formally organize the new league’s constitution, which apparently is simply an ‘adopted ’ version of the NHA‘s constitution. When questioned as to why they elected to suspend operations, the NHA cites issues running a five-team league and the hardship of recruiting players due to the increase in ‘off season’ conscription for the War effort.

The National Hockey League (NHL) is Born February 8th, 1917
The 228th Battalion Withdraws from NHA On February 8th, 1917, the 228th Battalion withdraws its teams from both the OHA and the NHA after receiving their notice of deployment and direct orders to proceed overseas to engage in the WWI arena. This reduces the league to five active teams, and presents the challenge, once again, of scheduling single away games in Toronto among an odd number of disgruntled team owners. 7 0
All the NHA franchise team owners, with the exception of Livingstone, meet to officially form the new league, which they call the National Hockey League (NHL). Although they have excluded Livingston from the new league, the NHL manages to somehow inherit the contracts for Livingstone’s Toronto ‘Blueshirts’ franchise players. The owners of the Toronto Arena Company, who also happen to own the Montreal Arena, are awarded a ‘temporary NHL franchise’ and assigned Livingstone’s players to compete in the NHL’s first 1917-1918 season. Supposedly, this is done under a ‘lease’ agreement that contains an ‘unspecified lease term’. Sam Lichtenhein, owner of the Montreal Wanderers, is quoted as saying “We didn’t throw Livingstone out; he’s still got his franchise in the old National Hockey Association. He has his team, and we wish him well. The only problem is, he’s playing in a one-team league.”

The ‘Toronto Arenas are Born
Toronto ‘Arenas’ Win First NHL Stanley Cup
The Toronto Arenas, predecessor to the Toronto Maple Leafs start out as an interim team assigned to the Toronto Arena Company under a temporary NHL franchise. The team isn’t officially organized until 1918 but , unlike two other NHL franchises with ‘NHA roots’, the Montreal ‘Canadiens’ and the Ottawa ‘Senators’, the Toronto ‘Maple Leafs’ do not officially claim the earlier ‘Blueshirts’ history as their own. They do, however, claim the history of the “temporary” Toronto franchise of 1917-18, typically referred to as the ‘Arenas’. The season kicks off with Livingston, the NHA members/team owners and the owners of the Toronto Arena Company deeply embroiled in multiple legal disputes that will prove to be a long and costly set of legal battles. The players, caught in the middle, sign contracts with both Livingstone and the Arena Company, not knowing who may be the resultant winner in the dispute. However, in the interim, the players have no choice but to play for the Arena Team if they wish to play Hockey in the new National Hockey League (NHL). Furthermore, the NHL makes a public announcement that they [the parties to the dispute] have reached an agreement wherein Livingstone is to be bought out (although this never actually takes place). The season (1917-18), in spite of all the uncertainty and resulting stress among the players, the Arena team proves to have a great season and they go on to win the NHL league Championship playoffs against Montreal’s ‘Canadiens’ in a two game playoff series. Although the interim team has no official name, the public continues to refer to them as the ‘Torontos’ or the ‘Blueshirts’ as they have been used to doing.
For three years prior to the 1917-18 season, the NHA - PCHA Stanley Cup Finals have been hosted on an alternating basis between the NHA champion’s home arena and the PCHA home venue each year. 1918 is the NHA’s turn to host the Stanley Cup playoffs. The NHL is the de facto “replacement” for the NHA, therefore the Playoffs are to take place in Toronto. However, each of the two leagues play by different ‘game rules’. The PCHA allows forward passing and plays with seven players per team. The NHL does not allow forward passing and restricts each side to only six (6) players. Therefore, as has been the custom for the three previous inter-league playoff seasons, both sides agree to implement alternating rules. This means officiating every other game using the visitor’s league rules. Not surprisingly, in each and every game of play during this playoff series, the winning team is the one playing under its own league’s rules. The Toronto ‘Arenas’ win games 1 and 3 (with scores of 5-3, & 6-3), while the Vancouver ‘Millionaires’ win games 2 and 4 (with scores of 6-4, & 8-1). Luckily for Toronto, game 5 is played under NHL rules and the ‘Arenas’ defeat the ‘Millionaires’ by a narrow margin (2-1) to win the first official NHL Stanley Cup Championship.
With the ‘Blueshirts’ players on temporary loan (‘lease’) to the Toronto Arena Company, and the Arena owners having not paid for the players, Livingstone sues the owners of the Mutual Street Arena for revenues earned by the players, which will become substantial with the team’s upcoming victory over Vancouver for the 1917-18 Stanley Cup.

Mr. Hockey was ready to leave Saskatoon and pursue a future in the sport. Before it was all said and done, Gordie Howe would play a total of 34 seasons of professional hockey and establish scoring records that would stand until an inhuman shooting machine by the name of Wayne Gretzky came along and claimed many of them. Although Gordie Howe retired in 1980, he still holds NHL records for most games and seasons played. If you ask any true hockey fan who the greatest player of all time was, a few younger fans might say Wayne Gretzky. Yet, Gretzky himself idolized Detroit’s star player while growing up and would probably be the first to say that Gordie Howe was “the greatest all around player” that ever lived. There is little debate that Mr. Hockey was a more complete player and became the singular living legend by which an entire sport was defined. Gordie Howe’s toughness was also evident early in his rookie career and his coach, Jack Adams - vexed at his rookie’s willingness to get into a fight - allegedly said to him, “I know you can fight. Now can you show me you can play hockey?” Until Gordie Howe began playing professionally, a hat trick was attributed to a player who scored three goals in a game. Impressive yes, but perhaps not as impressive as what became known as a ‘Gordie Howe Hat Trick’, which occurs when a player scores a goal, serves up an assist and gets in a fight, all in the same game! This should serve as a reminder of why Gordie was known as the greatest hockey player in the world. Mr. Hockey was equally adept at all three phases of the game: scoring a goal, passing to a teammate and punching an opponent. In a sport known for brawls, the pugnacious Gordie Howe was never shy about swinging away at someone on the opposing team. Gordie Howe made his professional debut as a right winger for the Detroit Red Wings on October 16, 1946, at the age of 18, and scored a goal in his first game. Before calling it quits, Mr. Hockey would play a quarter of a century for the same team, win four Stanley Cup championships, and personally finish within the top five in scoring for 20 consecutive seasons! What makes Mr. Hockey’s scoring records even more impressive was the nature of the game during the 1940’s and 1950’s, when Gordie Howe was in his prime. ing games. Also, the ‘slap-shot’ was not generally or as widely used as it is today. Not to take anything away from “The Great One’s” accomplishments, but it’s hard to imagine the slighter built Wayne Gretzky putting up the same scoring numbers had he played during Gordie Howe’s time. Howe solidified his reputation as the greatest hockey player of all time as he plowed through the decades putting up scoring numbers that were unheard of for the time. Back then, Mr. Hockey was an oddity - a big man who was also a perennial contender for the scoring title. He became the first NHL player to score 90 points then finished the 1952-53 season with 95, including a career-best - 49 goals. In 1968-69, at the ripe old age of 40, he broke the 100 point mark for the first and only time in his career, scoring 44 goals and assisting 59 others. But all was not right in “Red Wing land”. Shortly after that 103 point season, the man who is known as Mr. Hockey discovered that he was only the third-highest paid player on Detroit’s team at $45,000. Not the third highest paid in the league, but receiving less than two other players on his own team! The greatest hockey player of all time, receiving only $45,000? Under pressure from Howe (and perhaps Gordie’s wife (if you believe media reports of the time), Red Wing owner, Bruce Norris, increased his pay to $100,000. Unfortunately, a chronic wrist injury only allowed Howe to play two more seasons. Gordie Howe retired after the 1970-71 season and took a job in the team’s front office. Mr. Hockey won the NHL Most Valuable Player award six times, a number that has only been beaten by Wayne Gretzky, who has earned nine Hart Memorial Trophies. Gordie Howe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame only a year after retirement, but wasn’t able to hang up the skates completely. Two years later, in his mid-forties, Howe joined his sons on the Houston Aeros of an upstart competitor to the NHL, the World Hockey Association. The old man scored more than 100 goals twice in a six-year stint. Call him what you will, Gordie Howe is a legend that redefined the role of a Hockey forward and was the inaugural recipient of the NHL Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. Gordie Howe died on June 10, 2016, at the age of 88, but he’ll always be “Mr. Hockey”! L IFESTYL E

WHY RUSSIAN WOMEN LEAVE RUSSIA UKRAINE krainian and Russian men are unfortunately in short supply according to Russian & Ukrainian women. However, with the most recent conflict in the Ukraine, it seems this problem has only been exacerbated, particularly among Ukrainian men. Ukrainian men in general enjoy drinking and partying, learning from a relatively young age that consuming alcohol is a part of the cultural lifestyle. Many Ukrainian men learn their habits from the compulsory basic military training
that they must participate in. Ukrainian men are typically macho and believe in leading a stoic existence even (or especially) during economically depressed times. A poor economy does very little to lift spirits, but fueling stoicism with depressants only makes matters worse. Apparently, this is exactly what is happening in the Ukraine and it’s leading to an even more widespread gender imbalance. This imbalance has effected the number of available women in the Ukraine, without enough suitable men with whom they can start a family.

SHORTAGE OF MEN Because of ALCOHOLISM & DRUG ABUSE Russian & Ukrainian men only have a life expectancy of 63 years. In contrast, Western Nations can boast a male life-expectancy of 80-81 years. Thus, the average western male enjoys a life expectancy that is 27% greater. Alcoholism, drug abuse and cigarette smoking are thought to be the most common contributing factors and/or life-shortening vices among Ukrainian men. Alcoholism has been a problem for generations but drug abuse has become rampant in the last decade. However, it may be misleading to refer to the more recent proliferation of home-brew concoctions - containing various ‘bathtub blends’ of household chemicals - as drugs. With growing alcoholism, black market drug-abuse and chemical injectables, there is a decline in suitable men for marriage.
ALCOHOLISM
DRUG ABUSE + DOMESTIC ABUSE

An unfortunate side-effect of drugs & alcoholism is emotional and physical abuse. Such widespread alcoholism is probably the result of Ukraine’s recession-mired economy and lack of opportunities available to its men. However, the widespread domestic abuse suffered by Slavic women as a result, only serves to make western suitors appear kind and attentive by comparison.

The end result is that men are dying earlier than women in the Ukraine. There is also evidence that pollutants are suppressing the ‘ Y-chromosome’ and leading to a shortage of men. In parts of the Ukraine, this relationship is clearly evident and is resulting in more female births than male. However, Nature has ensured that a woman’s maternal instincts are strong and she seeks to find a suitable mate to sire her offspring, regardless of nationality.

REALISTIC
HAVE
If Russian dating has one cardinal rule it’s this: a gentleman must have realistic expectations. Many men waste a lot of time, money, and effort simply because they approach Russian dating with the wrong attitude and expectations that are not realistic. If a man wants to successfully court a woman from the former Soviet Union, he must carefully think about what he expects to get out of the Russian dating experience.
RUSSIAN WOMEN STEREOTYPES Thanks to the myths and stereotypes associated with Russian women and Russian dating, gentlemen may not know what they can realistically expect. Here are 4 common myths about Russian women that encourage men to form wrong ideas.
Russian Women Are Poor and Miserable, Just Longing to Be Rescued From Their Drab Life Perhaps the most common stereotype about Russian women is that they are poor and miserable and desperate to leave Russia. This myth is dangerous as it causes some men to think they can attract a lady with little to no effort and/or women on Russian dating sites should be grateful to Western men for rescuing them. While situations vary from woman to woman, the damsel-in-distress scenario is very rare. Russia has come a long way since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and many Russian women enjoy rewarding careers and fulfilling relationships with family and friends. Would several of the ladies like to live abroad? Yes. The same is true of Western women. Are Russian women desperate to escape Russia? Not likely. Men should not expect the ladies to flock to them simply because they’re foreign, nor should they half-heartedly court Russian women because they assume the ladies want to be rescued and are likely to overlook sloppy courting techniques. 9 0

Russian Women Are Scammers While Russian scammers certainly exist, paranoia in the international dating industry has reached a fever pitch. Because of this, many men believe that the majority of Russian women Online are scammers who are only interested in money, gifts, immigration papers, etc. and that potential matches should “prove” they are one of the honest few. Naturally, this guilty until proven innocent attitude offends and repels honest Soviet women who are looking for love Online. Men who want to find their future wife on a Russian dating site should always give ladies the benefit of the doubt and treat women with respect. Russian women scammers certainly exist, but with a little common sense a man can easily avoid them and he should not allow scammer paranoia to derail his search for love.
Russian Women Want to Be Traditional Housewives Many gentlemen often wonder if Russian women are really the traditional housewives they hear rumors about. After all, isn’t that why thousands of men marry Russian mail order brides each year? While some Russian and Ukrainian ladies do enjoy a traditional role in a marriage, others prefer a more modern partnership with both partners working outside the home, performing household chores, taking care of the children, etc. Every lady is different and if a gentleman attempts to assert an authoritative “manly” role online or assumes that every Russian woman he meets wants to be a traditional housewife, he is bound to repel or offend potential matches. Gentlemen should
MEN’S

EXPECTATIONS always treat a lady as an individual, rather than relying on regional stereotypes.
Russian Women Don’t Care About a Man’s Looks, Age or Income Another common myth is that Russian women don’t care about a man’s looks, age, or income, only his personality, sense of humor, and other inner qualities. While these qualities are important, Russian women are only human and naturally want to find a man to whom they are physically attracted and someone who can financially support them should they decide to make the difficult move from Eastern Europe. It’s simply not realistic to expect an 18-yearold model type to fall for an obese man 30 years her senior nor should a man who is thousands of dollars in debt expect a woman to trade her familiar (and not necessarily poor) life in Russia for a life of financial uncertainty in the United States. Again, Russian women aren’t desperate to leave home and Western men must offer the ladies something more than the chance to live in a foreign country.

DATING
RUSSIAN
Myths about the Russian dating process can also be problematic. Here are 5 of the most common Int’l dating myths and how they can negatively affect a man’s experience on Russian & Ukrainian dating websites.
Myth # 1.) Conventional Rules Don’t Apply
Myth # 3.) Women are Desperate to Leave
Some Men are attracted to international dating because they believe Russian women aren’t as ‘picky’ as western women when it comes to dating courtship . So for some reason, they come to the conclusion that conventional rules don’t apply. Some of the most common ways these men typically deviate from standard dating practices and/or the more obvious mistakes they make are to propose marriage in the first email or two, discussing sex too soon, forwarding email attachments containing inappropriate photos (such as male genitalia), booking trips to meet with a lady without consulting her, and insisting on intimacy before a lady is ready, just to name a few.
Some men think that Russian and Ukrainian women are desperate to leave their homeland and come to America. Women are never in a hurry to simply packup and leave their family, friends and everything else behind. Since the collapse of the USSR, it is a much different life for Russians and Ukrainians. Long gone are the days of communists defections and/or elaborate attempts to escape the iron curtain by tunneling under the wall. However, due to rising alcoholism and drug abuse among Slavic men, and the associated increase in suicide and accidental deaths, there are not as many “eligible” bachelors available. However, this does not mean that Russian & Ukrainian women are desperate to leave. It merely means that they are willing to look beyond their immediate ‘dating pool’ (and nationality) in order to access a larger pool of eligible candidates. Russian women are admired for their beauty anywhere in the world, and beauty need not be desperate.
While courting a Russian woman is in some ways vastly different than courting a woman from a man’s own country (language barriers, cultural differences, distance, etc.), the core basics are the same. Men must still make an effort to be charming and polite if they want to attract a potential mate, they must still treat a woman with respect, they must still get to know a potential partner before proposing marriage or exclusivity, and they must still consider a lady’s thoughts and feelings.
Myth # 4.) The Process is Quick and Easy Those who are unfamiliar with travel and immigration laws think marrying a Russian or Ukrainian woman is simply a matter of meeting a lady Online, buying her a plane ticket and shipping her things from Russia. The process is a little more complicated than that. Men who are serious about marrying a woman from The Former Soviet Union must travel to the lady’s home country at least once (a little more complicated in itself) and if things go well, navigate the lengthy and complicated immigration process. Hundreds of men have successfully married Russian women and moved them abroad, but these happy unions would not have been possible without a lot of patience and persistence.
Myth # 2.) A Man can Purchase a Wife While most men would never accuse a traditional dating partner of being a scammer (even though he may spend hundreds of dollars on flowers, dinners, movies, and other dating expenses), some men do not hesitate to hurl this accusation at Russian women. Many men feel, whether they admit it or not, that ladies on Russian dating sites owe them something in lieu of service fees and chat costs. They seem to believe that if they have to shell out money for communication services, they should have their pick of any lady on the site and if a lady doesn’t appear to want to oblige that she’s somehow dishonest.
Myth # 5.) Russian Dating Isn’t for Everyone There are pluses and minuses to any form of dating, be it the traditional dinner and a movie, speed dating, Online dating, or Russian dating. A man must know what he can realistically expect from each one and choose the option that works best for him. If a gentleman thinks that Russian dating matches his expectations, he should continue his search for a foreign bride. If not, he should concentrate on the other dating models which are plentiful in today’s society. Knowing what to realistically expect is key to having a successful Russian dating experience.
While this may have been the case in the pioneer days of international matchmaking, it is certainly not the case today. Spending money on a lady does not entitle a man to any rights or privileges and any true Gentleman knows this. It should be obvious that, even if a woman were to not object to such unreasonable expectations, there is a chance that “expectations in exchange for gifts or consideration” may be considered prostitution. 9 2

STRONG
HAVE A
A gentleman’s profile is the first thing a lady sees, so it’s crucial that men on Russian dating websites strive to create the best profile possible. Though it may take time and effort, the results are certainly worth it.
PROFILE PHOTOS
Some men think looks and photos are unimportant to Russian women, but the ladies, like women from any country, are drawn to profiles with quality photos and men who care enough about the dating process to make a good first impression. Here are a few pointers to help men select the best pictures for their profile.
Avoid Posting Low-Quality Photos One of the most common mistakes men make when it comes to profile photos is choosing pictures that are low quality. Low-quality photos are ones that are blurry, out of focus, poorly framed, badly lit, etc. If a lady can not get a clear idea of what a gentleman looks like, after viewing his photo, then he should scrap the photo and start again. Some men may intentionally post blurry or shadowy photos in an attempt to look mysterious, or intriguing, but more often than not a lady will wonder if the gentleman is trying to hide something or if he is too lazy to find a good photograph. Quality photos are a must when it comes to online dating profiles.
A Messy Appearance is a Turn Off Dirty, unkempt men rarely attract members of the opposite sex. In fact, a dirty appearance is one of the top 5 turn offs for Russian women. If a gentleman wishes to attract a lady on a Russian dating site he should post photos in which he appears clean and well put together. Wrinkled or stained clothing, unkempt beards or goatees, and rumpled hair are unflattering and may make Russian women wonder if a man is too lazy to take care of his appearance. Needless to say, this is not the first impression a gentleman wants to make on a beautiful Russian woman.
Accurate, Up-to-Date Photos Are a Must If a man is sincerely looking for love and romance on a Russian dating website, it is important that he post an ac9 4

curate photo of himself. Recent photos are essential, not photographs taken 10, 15, or 20 years ago. Additionally, photos of actors, models, sports athletes, musicians, or even cartoon characters are not appropriate. The goal for most men, after all, is to meet a lady to marry. Inaccurate photos, or photos that are blatant lies, undermine this effort and are viewed by women as attempting to start a new relationship - based - on a lie.
Post at Least One Photo The only thing worse than an unflattering, inaccurate, or low-quality photo, is not posting any photographs at all. Research has shown that profiles with no pictures get the least amount of attention on all online dating websites, so if a gentleman desires to have a successful Ukrainian or Russian dating experience, he should post at least one picture.
Tell a Story Pictures are an excellent way for gentlemen to share the story of their lives. This is especially true on Russian dating sites where anecdotes and information can get lost in translation. Rather than posting a simple head shot, gentlemen should consider sharing photos that showcase the people and things that are

PROFILE . . . important to them. Photos of family, friends, pets, hobbies, and accomplishments, are just a few examples. Such images not only make a man seem warm and genuine, traits that women admire, but also help him stand out in a crowd of prospective Russian bride (or Ukrainian bride) suitors. A good profile photo is critical to attracting the interest of Russian women. Just as gentlemen are interested in the ladies’ photos, women want to see what the men look like. Men who want to improve their chances
of findi n g t r u e love on a Russian dating site should only upload profile photos that are accurate, of high quality, appropriate, and are flattering. Interesting photos that tell the story of a man’s life are also a good wa y to ca tc h a lady’s interest and get a conversation going. These are just a few simple ways to increase your success.

PROFILE CONTENT
When creating a profile, it’s important that a gentleman take care with what he writes and how he expresses himself. Here are a few tips to help gentlemen craft profiles that will help them get noticed.
Be Clear Even though the women on Russian dating sites are not native English speakers, gentlemen should still make an effort to write complete sentences, use proper grammar and punctuation, and avoid text speak and unclear abbreviations. The ladies and their translators may not understand that “u r hot” means “you are hot,” or that “ROFL” is short for “rolling on the floor laughing.” Nor should they have to sift through excessive punctuation (I want a sexy lady!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) or no punctuation at all. Clarity is always best when it comes to international dating.
Be Complete Gentlemen should always take the time to complete, really complete, the “About Me” and “Looking For” sections of their Russian dating profiles. Space fillers like “Ask Me Later” or “I Don’t Know What to Say” are not appropriate substitutes for
quality text. Sure, these sections can be a pain but if a man neglects to fill them out he risks coming across as lazy or insincere. Ladies typically respond much better to men who honestly describe themselves and thoroughly complete their profiles than to men who make half-hearted efforts.
Be Concise Though it’s important that a gentleman fully complete his profile, there is such a thing as writing too much. Profiles are a way for men to give women a tantalizing glimpse into their lives and entice the ladies into wanting to know more. Writing too much can overwhelm women looking for love online, especially those who are not native English speakers. Profiles that are complete, yet concise do well.
Be Positive Russian women like men who are confident and optimistic. In fact, in a recent survey Russian ladies listed these qualities as two of their biggest turn ons. Therefore, men should take great care with their profiles to avoid coming across as negative and bitter. Statements like “no cheaters, scammers, liars” or “I doubt this Russian dating thing will work” are best left unsaid. Instead, men should focus on qualities they DO want in a lady and show confidence in the Russian dating process.
The text in a gentleman’s profile should be clear, complete, concise, and positive. Though writing a quality profile can be a pain, women will appreciate the time and effort you put into this, as it is an important part of the dating experience. Advertisement H O T

BE
EMAIL SAVVY
Email is the primary tool of communication on Russian dating websites so it’s important that gentlemen know how to use this highly effective tool. Here are a few tips to help suitors compose interesting and informative emails that stand out from the crowd and the best way to handle unsolicited emails.
Send Personalized Emails While a gentleman can save a lot of time sending the same introduction letter to many women, personalized greetings get more results. Sincerely complimenting a woman on her hair, eyes, clothing, or something specific in her profile is a great way for a man to show he has read a lady’s information and is genuinely interested in getting to know her. Hopeful suitors don’t have to write a completely different letter for each and every woman. However, sending a personal greeting will help a gentleman’s email stand out in the crowd.
Don’t Send Sexual Emails In general, a man should avoid sending sexual emails when communicating with women online (unless a lady initiates the conversation). This is especially true at the beginning of a relationship. Though it may seem like flirty fun, ladies who receive sexual messages are likely to think the men who sent them are only interested in sex. Despite what some may think, most of the women on Russian dating sites are seriously seeking long-term relationships, not just sex, and may be offended, annoyed, or turned off by men who send inappropriate messages.
Be Respectful Women everywhere want men to respect them. Unfortunately, the online, semianonymous nature of Russian dating causes some men to forget their manners. How can a man show respect? By making a sincere effort to learn about a lady’s country and culture, by listening to what a lady has to say and not minimizing her thoughts and feelings, by attempting to see the international dating experience from her point of view, and by refraining from making crude jokes, just name a few. In short, a man should treat a woman the same way he’d like to be treated.
Avoid Negative Topics and Crude Humor There are some topics a man should avoid in his first few emails to a Russian woman. Troubled finances, crazy ex-wives, health issues, and failed relationships are a few examples. Crude jokes, bathroom humor, and explicit sexual material are also big no-nos. In addition, a man should treat potentially explosive topics like politics and religion with care. That’s not to say a couple should never have a conversation about these topics but that they are best left for the later stages of a relationship.

Don’t Pressure a Lady to Respond
Managing Emails
Most Russian and Ukrainian women do not have access to a home computer so they cannot reply to emails as quickly as gentlemen might like. When a man sends a message, he must be patient. He shouldn’t set a time-frame for a response. He shouldn’t demand to know why a lady hasn’t responded to a particular email. And he certainly shouldn’t accuse a woman of being a scammer if she cannot or will not reply. Women on Russian dating sites are free to do as they wish and are not paid or required to reply to every email they receive. If a suitor pressures a lady to respond to his email he risks being seen as desperate, obnoxious, or both.
The women on Russian dating sites love to send and receive email for many reasons. Email is a great tool for women who want to practice reading and writing in English or those who want more in-depth information about a particular gentleman. It’s also useful for times when a lady’s schedule does not sync-up with a man’s, making chat difficult or impossible. Not only that, but many ladies love the anticipation of awaiting a response from a special gentleman.
Use Proper Spelling and Grammar Most suitors think spelling and grammar is not that important when it comes to emailing a lady. After all, many women on international matchmaking sites don’t speak English. Though this may be true, men should still try to use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation in their correspondence. Why? Proper usage makes a gentleman’s letters look more intelligent and helps translators convey his messages more quickly and efficiently. Also, there are many ladies who are just learning English and reading and replying to a suitor’s emails helps them practice and improve their language skills. While a man’s emails don’t have to be perfect, the lessons he learned in school still apply.
Many members feel obligated to respond to every introduction email they receive. While this sentiment is chivalrous, replying to every email is simply impossible and not a productive way for a gentleman to conduct his search. Men should think about the type of women they hope to meet, and focus on responding to women who meet his criteria. Though some men worry about hurting a woman’s feelings, they needn’t worry. The ladies know that a gentleman can’t possibly respond to every email and that an occasional lack of response is simply a reality of Online dating. How can a gentleman on a Russian dating website use email to his advantage? By always showing the proper respect, sending personalized messages, striving to use proper grammar and spelling, and by avoiding negative topics, sexual content, and unfair pressure to respond.

BE
CHAT SMART
Live chat is another important communication tool on Russian Online dating websites and one a gentleman must master if he wishes to ever successfully court Russian women. Here are a few tips to help suitors get the most out of live chat and video chat.
Be Optimistic Who would you rather chat with? A Russian woman who says “I doubt this dating thing will work” or the one who says, “I saw your profile & I’m really impressed! Let’s chat!”? If the first impression a gentleman makes is that he’s a negative person who isn’t enthusiastic about meeting someone new, he’s likely to scare women away who might otherwise have liked him very much. Men who are positive, confident, and excited about Russian (or any) dating make for the best chat partners.
Have a Few Topics in Mind It’s helpful if a gentleman has a few topics in mind before chatting with Russian women. This can help him maintain a steady stream of communication and avoid wasting time on idle small talk. Work, school, music, and a lady’s hometown are all interesting topics that have the potential to develop into meaningful conversations. Every lady is unique so a gentleman may have to broach a few subjects before finding one that she is passionate about.
Be Respectful
It’s common for men to want to tell the ladies about the horrors of past relationships, the cost of Russian dating, scammers, or the difficulties of finding a Russian bride, but they should avoid these topics, at least at first. It’s best if a man use initial chats to describe his interests, learn about the lady’s interests and goals, and determine if she is a potential match. The serious stuff can come later.
Unfortunately, some men believe that the fees they pay a Russian dating service entitle them to certain rights. These men feel that the ladies are obligated to chat on demand, chat exclusively with them, and be willing to discuss any subject the man likes, including sex. In essence, some men treat Russian women like employees of an adult chat room. This behavior is not only disrespectful, but is almost certain to offend a lady and drive her away. Great chat partners are those who are inquisitive, optimistic, respectful, and men who make an effort to keep things light. Every gentleman has his own chat style, but these tips can help him improve his chatting technique.

NEXT LEVEL ... While exchanging messages with beautiful Russian women is fun and exciting, there really is no substitute for unrestricted chat or meeting that one special lady in a face-to-face setting. After a couple has communicated online for a few weeks or months and has built a solid relationship they may wish to consider exchanging personal contact information and planning a first meeting.
Russian Dating Sites and Personal Contact Information Many reputable Russian dating websites do not allow men to purchase women’s contact information or immediately share their own. While this policy may seem annoying or unfair, it exists to keep international dating sites complaint with the International Marriage Broker Regulation Act of 2005 (IMBRA), and to keep both gentlemen members and Russian ladies safe from harm and harassment. The “no personal contact info” policy is not forever. When the time is right, a gentleman may exchange personal contact information with a lady and the two can begin making plans to meet.
When is the Right Time? Every couple is different and there are no set rules about when a couple should or should not exchange personal contact information. However, a gentleman should wait until he has established a special connection with a lady rather than requesting information from just anyone. It’s also important to know if a lady has a home computer or cell phone and if she’s willing and able to communicate off a Russian dating website. Establishing a solid relationship H O T

and being aware of a lady’s communication options and preferences will help a gentleman avoid unpleasant surprises.
Staying With a Dating Service Vs. Independent Communication Once a couple has exchanged personal contact information, they can either continue to communicate through a Russian dating service or interact completely on their own. While many gentlemen are eager to chat “off the system” there are many benefits to staying with a service. If a couple stays with a Russian dating service, the lady can continue to use agency computers and web cams. This is an important benefit considering most Russians do not own home computers. The lady can also continue to use the service of agency translators and interpreters, another invaluable benefit. Not only that, but many local agencies also help coordinate meetings between couples and assist members when they are in town visiting ladies. And, of course, a site’s customer service team is an invaluable resource when it comes to questions, concerns, or mis-communications. Unfortunately, these benefits are not available to couples once they leave a Russian dating website service. Most gentlemen are eager to get off the system because they think it will save money. However, if a man were to attempt to provide a computer for his beloved to use, an interpreter to translate messages, and independently coordinate every detail of his international trip, he will end up spending more money in the long run, and/or leave a bad impression. CONCLUSION Though many men are intimidated by the thought of courting Russian women online, it’s not that different than courting other ladies online. Men must not fall for misleading myths and stereotypes and they must approach the process with realistic expectations. A strong profile with compelling text and photos is important as is the ability to effectively chat with Russian women. Knowing how and when to request a lady’s personal contact information and when to take a relationship to the next level is also an important part of the courtship process. We hope this information helps gentlemen to successfully navigate the exciting, exotic and seemingly mysterious world of Russian dating.
