OKTOBERFEST Oktoberfest in September? Yes, it's true! The first Oktoberfest in honor of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage was celebrated in October. In the following years the festival was moved to September to take advantage of the warmer nights.

You don't need to travel to another country to experience Oktoberfest - join us on Saturday, September 18! Oktoberfest has become a great cultural experience sure to delight all ages. Start the day at the Highlands Ranch Town Center with the Oktoberfest 5K at 9:00 a.m. then come back to Town Center South for the traditional German festival from 1:00 - 9:00 p.m.

In the afternoon, bring your dachshund for the Dachshund races. Registration is 3:00 - 3:30 p.m. and the race will follow. Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place racers and best dressed! We will have authentic, fun German entertainment all day, wrapping up with a performance by the Tripping Griswolds at 6:00 p.m. *Little ones will enjoy face painters, inflatables, and balloons to their heart’s content while you and your friends enjoy authentic German entertainment, cuisine and bier, all while enjoying a beautiful Colorado evening. • Saturday, September 18 • Free Admission • 1:00 - 9:00 p.m. • Town Center South, 9288 Dorchester St. • Mandatory 21+ ID to purchase alcohol. *There will be a charge for face painters, inflatables, balloons, german cuisine, and bier. OUTDOOR POOL CLOSING SEASON SCHEDULE The outdoor pools will close for the season September 7.

HR HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS: BIRD ART IN HIGHLANDS RANCH Bird art, like animal art featured in last month's historic highlight, also dots the Highlands Ranch landscape. The bird “flying” on signs is immediately recognizable to drivers entering Highlands Ranch. In 1981, builder Mission Viejo asked Brock and Associates marketing firm to develop a logo for the New Town of Highlands Ranch. According to Kathi Brock, instead of cattle–which didn’t seem dynamic enough–her firm created the “epic bird,” a combination of an eagle, falcon and owl. “The Tribute Eagle” at the heart of the Veterans Monument, next to the Highlands Ranch Library, was created by Mike Curtis and dedicated in July 2009. Sculpting the bald eagle since 1971, Curtis is considered the foremost sculptor of the bald eagle, our nation’s proud symbol. He has created sculptures for veteran’s memorials in 16 states.

Westridge:

Also next to the library at Civic Green Park is a sculpture by Colorado artist Rik Sargent, known for his art in public places. Given free creative rein, he chose two things recognizable in Highlands Ranch–the falcon and the Indian Paintbrush, the latter a symbol of the HR
