time to... Upgrade! The HRCA is in the process of implementing a technology upgrade. Through the upgrade process, we are changing from systems which were inefficient and unreliable to state-ofthe art recreation and finance software to give HRCA the ability to streamline processes, payments, and help ensure faster and easier program registration. The new software will give our members the ability to rent basketball and racquetball courts, schedule meeting rooms online, purchase tickets, and ensure a better overall user experience. While this process will benefit the homeowner and organization in many ways, we need your help! Every resident will need to update and verify their membership information, online or in person, in order to ensure each account is setup correctly. As part of the upgrade, all members will receive a new membership card. 3 EASY STEPS FOR YOU! 1. Fill out a Membership Form: - Online at www.HRCAonline.org/Upgrade (it will only take a few minutes) and data will automatically upload into our new system OR - Fill out a form at any recreation center. Forms can also be printed from the web site and filled out ahead of time. 2. Verify your permanent resident status: - Attach a document with your residence address printed on it OR - Beginning December 1, bring in your photo ID for proof of residency 3. Get New Membership Cards December 1 - February 28, come in and pick up your free new membership cards. The new system is set to launch December 1, so look for great things to come!

2017 Budget Planning The HRCA staff and Finance Committee are preparing the 2017 Budget and a draft will be available on our web site for homeowners to review in mid-October. may need to “winterize” waterlines and other items that may be susceptible to freezing. Consequently, it would be a good idea to avoid costly maintenance caused from water damage by storing hoses in the garage for the winter months. Dead materials should also be disposed of in a timely manner to avoid providing insect or rodent habitat.

Volunteer of the Month: Nicholas Purchase Nicholas says, "My favorite part of volunteering with Therapeutic Recreation (TR) is seeing kids improve as they practice basketball and soccer week after week. I can see how much it means to them, so it's a great feeling when they conquer new skills and improve. I would definitely recommend volunteering for TR to my friends. It's such a good feeling giving hi-fives and hugs at the end of practice every week, and seeing how much all the players enjoy themselves. It's indescribable." Coach Joe says, "Nick is dependable, always has a smile, and is helpful with the participants." If you are interested in volunteering for the TR program, contact summer. aden@hrcaonline.org or call 303-471-7043.

Keep Your Property Compliant by Removing Dead Trees In last month’s newsletter the Community Improvement Services Department (CIS), commonly referred to as “Covenants,” highlighted the importance of homeowners keeping their properties compliant with regard to “unsightly material” by properly storing tools, landscaping materials, etc., in a shed or garage. This month CIS wants to remind residents of the Residential Improvement Guideline that requires the trimming/removal of dead tree branches and removal of dead trees entirely. This year CIS has noted an inordinately large number of dead trees around the community, and the department has experienced a substantial increase in the number of complaints received about dead branches on trees and dead trees. It is every homeowner’s responsibility to have the dead trees removed from their property in a timely manner. Homeowners with dead trees or trees with dead branches, in either front or back yards, will receive a letter of non-compliance asking that the trees/branches be removed promptly. A property will not be updated to compliant status until the dead trees are removed. Smaller to medium-sized trees can often be removed by homeowners cutting the trees down themselves. Trees must be cut down to ground level. Larger trees may require removal by a tree company. Residents cited for a dead tree/branch violation can avoid prolonged non-compliance (which carries with it the risk of fines and loss of recreation privileges) by scheduling to address the issue before being cited. Tree companies get backed up with requests for tree removal very quickly, so planning ahead is important. If you have questions about the guidelines regarding dead trees, or any other HRCA Residential Improvement Guideline, you may contact the HRCA CIS Department at 303-471-8821.

Over 350 swimmers in two leagues had another great season representing our community. The Rocky Mountain Swim League team had many swimmers whose times allowed them to compete at the league championships. The Mountain High Swim League (MHSL) team finished third at the league championship and for the second year in a row were awarded the Sportsmanship Award for promoting fair and honest competition. MHSL also went to the State Championship and finished 5th out of 55 teams who attended the meet. Congratulations to Josh Heydt the new State Record Holder for boys 8 and under in the 25 yard backstroke. Each year hundreds of families participate in the two summer leagues and make friendships and memories that last a lifetime. A big thanks to all of the staff at Northridge for hosting all of the Saturday home meets throughout the summer season. The success of this program could not be possible without the hard work of the Head Coaches Amber Brust, Ali Sensintaffar and Blake Rider and their staff as well as the countless hours of volunteer time of all of the parent volunteers. Remember that March enrollment for 2017 is just around the corner! HRCA also offers year-round programs for youth coached & competitive swimming for all skill levels. Visit www.HRCAonline.org/Swim, call 303-471-8935, or email diane.ball@hrcaonline.org for more information.

Backcountry Wilderness Area Conceptual Plan Project Update With the Backcountry Conceptual Plan Project underway, there is a new buzz of discussions and questions regarding the Backcountry Wilderness Area. Out of the 8,200 acre conservation area, the HRCA can add amenities to 499 of those acres. There is no desire to use all 499 of those acres; the use of 20-30 acres is being explored. The point of adding amenities to the Backcountry is to produce revenue that would allow the HRCA to better care for the rest of the Backcountry and be less reliant on homeowner assessments; while adding great amenities to the community and furthering our mission to get people outdoors. Currently about $11 of your assessment is used for Backcountry operations. The strategy to use some of the Backcountry to produce revenue to fund the management of the Backcountry comes from the 2000 Open Space Conservation Area Plan. Amenities being considered as part of the Conceptual Plan are a pavilion type structure to provide a building space for youth outdoor camps, community events, and possibly weddings, a ropes/adventure course, an Olympic style archery range, and a horse facility for trail rides and horse camps and lessons. To get to this point, a committee of volunteers analyzed the 2012 community survey, evaluated existing Backcountry programs, and in 2015 made recommendations as to what amenities would be the best fit.

Confidence Matters The HRCA Cotillion program is celebrating its 9th Anniversary! Our Introduction to Cotillion for 3rd graders begins October 30 and Classes for 4th-5th and 6th-8th grade students, begin October 23. All classes use dance as an instrument to teach social messages. The 4th-8th grade classes focus on how to make a great first impression, character development, making good choices, table manners and respect. The 6th8th grade class will have their final dinner party, for the first time this year, at the Highlands Ranch Mansion for this wonderful holiday experience! This popular program had almost 300 children in it last year and is expected to fill, so be sure to register quickly! For more information please call 303-471-8928.

Haunted Forest What's scarier than walking through the Backcountry Wilderness Area's Haunted Forest (October 21 and 22), the dreaded wait in a zig-zag line. So, we're getting rid of it. This year, buy your tickets ($13) for a specific hourlong block—starting at 7:15 p.m. As the fear creeps in, enjoy community festivities like food trucks, an outdoor movie, and live animals as you wait for your ticket number to be howled. Wander cautiously, you never know if a shadow is a harmless tree branch or something much more terrifying.

The completion of the Conceptual Plan in January does not mean we are destined to add the amenities as the plan will outline. Further discussions and public processes along with Delegate approval are required to move forward with any such additions to the Backcountry. All of the Conceptual Plan Project information, including dates of three more community open houses, can be found on this web page: www.HRCAonline.org/BWAConceptualPlan. Please contact mark.giebel@hrcaonline.org or 303-471-8885 with any questions, concerns, or comments.
