TRASH – Put a Lid on It! Please help keep our neighborhoods safe and clean! Highlands Ranch can be windy, so make sure your trash bins are covered when you set them out for pick up. This will prevent blowing garbage and debris. In addition, with more people using the sidewalks during the summer months, remember to keep your trash bins on the curb and off the sidewalk. After trash has been picked up, trash containers must be properly stored either behind your fence or in your garage. Homeowners who leave containers out will be subject to penalties.

NEW PREFERRED PROVIDER Do your trash cans have a funny smell? Are they attracting unwanted bugs and rodents? HRCA is pleased to welcome a new preferred provider. Green Can Cleaner, a trash and recycle can cleaning service. The partnership provides a special discount to HRCA members for trash can cleaning and a variety of power washing services, including power washing and staining of fences. For more information and pricing, go to www.CleanHRCA.com or call 720-692-7151.

Summer is winding down and the seasons will soon be changing. I can’t believe it is already back-to-school time! Please make sure you pick up our Activity Guide for the fall programs and get an early start on registration. Remember, if you haven’t been out to experience our Farmers' Market, it is held every Sunday at Town Center through October and you still have plenty of time to stock up on fresh fruits and veggies! Hopefully, many of you have had the opportunity to take advantage of the activities this summer that HRCA and our Cultural Affairs Association have provided. There are still many events coming up so please check out our web site at www.HRCAonline.org for a full list of activities!

Community News Neighborhood Impressions First impressions and the general appearance of neighborhoods are greatly influenced by the paint on your home, along with the general maintenance of landscaping. The Community Improvement Services Department is busy surveying and conducting follow ups on paint, fencing and landscape issues.

Paint - Regular, timely painting of your home is a good practice for more reasons than just to avoid receiving a paint notice from HRCA. Nothing perks up a home like a fresh coat of paint. Be sure to get the color approved before buying the paint.

Fence- With the aging of the community, fencing has become a strong concern of residents. Regular maintenance and staining is required on all fences. In June of 2018, a unified stain color (Highlands Ranch Fence Brown) was adopted as the sole approved stain color. Please consult with the CIS Department at 303-471-8821 for further clarification of the Fence Guideline.

Trees - As neighborhoods mature, diseased and dead tree issues become more widespread. Regular trimming of trees and shrubs is recommended to keep them from becoming overgrown. Removal of dead trees and shrubs is required.

Water - Dry conditions are prevalent throughout Colorado and it is important for all home owners to use water efficiently. Follow these tips to help you reduce the amount of water needed in your landscape: • Water in the late evening to early morning hours. Evaporation loss occurs at a higher rate during the daytime hours. Only water when your yard needs it. • Water the lawn no more than two to three times per week. Deep, infrequent watering promotes deep roots and drought-tolerant grass. • Utilize horticultural best management practices. Aerate in the spring and fall. Fertilize three times during the season: spring, summer, and more importantly, fall. • Perform periodic checks of your irrigation system. Check for leaks and broken sprinkler heads and efficient coverage. Adjust your irrigation run times as the weather changes. • Use the cycle and soak method to reduce wasteful runoff. Break your watering times into five-minute cycles and wait an hour between each cycle to allow the water to soak in. • Install a rain sensor. Rain sensors can be added to your irrigation controller and will automatically shut off your sprinkler system when it rains.

SAT/ACT Test-Prep

The Importance of the Preschool Experience Whether you’re a full time working parent or a stay-at-home parent of a 3-5 year old, it is valuable to consider the importance of the Preschool experience for your child. Research has proven that children develop their most fundamental skills between birth and five years. These skills are critical in your child’s overall success as they move into adolescence and adulthood. A diverse learning environment is part of the overall experience. By providing your child an opportunity to develop the essential fine and gross motor, cognitive, linguistic, social and emotional skills with children their age, they are better able to cope, self-regulate and be independent. HRCA offers a Preschool program for children ages 2½-5 at both Eastridge and Westridge. Our teachers are early childhood educators, caring, and gentle professionals who will help your child through that experience. For more information, please call 720-348-8214.

End of Summer Camps Before your kids head back to school, give them one more unforgettable experience! For the budding artist, get your child enrolled in the Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture class for children ages 6-11 or The ABC’s of Art! Glue Sticks class for ages 3-5. For the aspiring chef, try our Dinners for the Family class for kids ages 5-7 or for kids ages 7-9. For the little ones, get them soaking up the last of the summer sun in Back to School Monday Madness, Wet and Wonderful Pets that Love Water, or Surf and Turf Crayon Fun. For the ambitious engineer or scientist in your family, try Minecraft Master Camp by Cleverlike Studios for kids ages 8-14 or Extreme Ninjas Camp for kids in grade K-5. For more information, please call 303-471-8928.

Backcountry Happenings Here’s the lowdown on things happening in the Backcountry:

Night in the Backcountry (August 2, 9, 16, 23): Dinner al fresco, a natural freeplay area, and a Rocky Mountain sunset…right in your backyard! Bring a picnic dinner and spend the evening exploring the Base Camp as a family. Each week is themed! Guided Hike (August 8): Venture to the less-explored parts of the Backcountry Wilderness Area with a guide. Meet your guide at Base Camp, then wander through Ponderosa stands, look for wildlife in their natural habitats, and chat about the conservation of the area. Come out to enjoy a true wilderness hike close to home! Recommended for ages 12 and up.

Stargazing Hayride (August 15 & 29): Leave the city lights behind and take a night hayride into the Backcountry where you will be amazed at the number of stars that can be seen. We meet up with our local astronomers, with their powerful telescopes, who explain the night sky.

On July 30 - August 2 from 9:00 a.m. - Noon, HRCA will be hosting our everpopular ACT test-prep class. Students will learn strategies that will help them raise their overall composite score with a National Board Certified Teacher. This class has been recommended by a number of high school teachers from all four of the Highlands Ranch High Schools, so be sure to register now. For more information, please call 303-471-8818.
