A rt s F e s t i va l & W i n e Ta s t i n g On Saturday and Sunday, August 4 - 5, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Town Center North will be filled with one of-a-kind fine arts and crafts selected by a committee. Browse while listening to live music, chat with the artists, and learn about different media and techniques they used to create their work. Children will be entertained with face painting, a chalk artist, crafts, and more. There is no charge to attend the festival. Glasses of wine will be available for purchase from 11:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. both days.

This year’s annual Arts Festival print, a view of the historic Highlands Ranch Mansion, is created by Highlands Ranch artist, Dan Grothe. Mr. Grothe will be available to sign limited edition prints on sale during the festival. See a picture of the print on page four.

On Saturday, come to the Wine Tasting tent from 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. to cool off! Taste refreshing wine varietals from Highlands WineSeller and sample delicious appetizers from Whole Foods Market. Advance tickets for the tasting are $17 for members, $20 for guests, and $20 for everyone the day of the event with proceeds benefiting the Highlands Ranch Community Scholarship Fund.

Touch-a-Truck Get in gear and get to the HRCA’s Touch-a-Truck event on Saturday, August 11, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Cherry Hills Community Church parking lot, 3900 Grace Blvd. in Highlands Ranch.

Touch-a-Truck is for kids of all ages. Explore police cars, military vehicles, fire trucks, and more!

Let those imaginations power up as the drivers and operators explain how everything works and what role the vehicles play in our community.

Kids may have their faces painted, jump in bounce houses, paint a real semi truck, or ride on a Monster Truck for an additional cost. Gourmet food trucks will roll in with tempting treats for adults and kids alike.

Hopefully many of you have had the opportunity to take advantage of the activities this summer that the HRCA and our Cultural Affairs Association have sponsored.

The Summer Concert Series was a great success with over 15,000 attendees and I had the opportunity to introduce one of our musical acts in July. The 4th of July Parade and Celebration were incredibly well attended! The Rodeo was a real hoot and the Carnival was fun for all! The Farmers’ Market on Sundays continues to be very successful and will run through October.

a n n ua l maintenance closures

First impressions and the general appearance of neighborhoods are greatly influenced by the paint on your home along with the general maintenance of landscaping. The Architectural Department is busy surveying and doing follow ups on both issues during the summer season. Residents are required to maintain their property, both front and back yards.

Paint - Regular, timely painting of your home is good practice for more reasons than just to avoid receiving a paint notice from the HRCA. It protects your siding from moisture and the harsh sun damage we see with our high altitude. Trim boards are especially susceptible to sun rot. Nothing perks up a home like a fresh coat of paint. Just be sure to get the color approved before buying the paint.

As neighborhoods mature, diseased and dead tree issues become more prevalent.

Regular pruning and removal of dying trees and shrubs are recommended before winter weather ensues.

Water - Dry conditions are prevalent throughout Colorado and it is important for all home owners to use water efficiently. Follow these tips to help you reduce the amount of water needed in your landscape: • Water in the late evening to early morning hours. Evaporation loss occurs at higher rate during the daytime hours. No watering is allowed between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

• Check the soil moisture before you water. Walk across your lawn. If you don’t see footprints, your lawn does not need water.

• Water the lawn no more than two to three times per week. Deep, infrequent watering promotes deep roots and drought-tolerant grass.

• Utilize horticultural best management practices: spring and fall aeration. Fertilize three times during the season: spring, summer, and fall.

• Perform periodic checks of your irrigation system. Check for leaks and broken sprinkler heads and for efficient coverage. Adjust your irrigation run times throughout the season as the weather changes.

• Use the cycle and soak method to reduce wasteful runoff. Break up your daily run times into five-minute cycles by adding more start times and wait about an hour between each cycle to allow the water to soak in properly.

Each year, the HRCA closes the facilities for one week at a time for annual maintenance. During this week, the staff performs routine maintenance and detail cleaning.

Routine maintenance items include fire alarm inspections, HVAC maintenance, cardiovascular and weight equipment preventative maintenance, draining and scrubbing of the swimming pools, refinishing of the wood floors (gymnasiums and fitness studios) and parking lot repairs. Detail cleaning includes painting the facility, high dusting, detail scrubbing of the locker rooms and fitness areas, waxing floors, and other general items.

Annual maintenance closures for Northridge is August 6-11 and Eastridge is August 27-September 1.

• Install a rain sensor. Rain sensors can be added to your irrigation controller and automatically shut off your sprinkler system when it rains. Lannie Garrett and the Errand Boys of Rhythm will take you on a journey through Frank Sinatra’s one-of-a-kind career with story and song. The show features classics like: One for the Road, That’s Life, Fly Me to the Moon and many more!

Ms. Garrett has that rare combination of popular and critical appeal. In addition to being named “Favorite Female Vocalist” several years in a row by The Denver Post readers, she garnered the top spot as favorite singer with the readers of 5280 Magazine. She’s worked with a diverse group of national entertainers including Bill Cosby, B.B. King, and Jay Leno. Lannie and her swinging big band even earned a standing ovation opening a show for her idol, the legend, Mr. Ray Charles.

Backcountry. Leave the hustle, bustle, and noise of suburbia behind as the rolling hills and prairie meadows make you feel as if you’ve traveled hours away from Highlands Ranch. We often see elk on our rides along with other wildlife. Rides continue through Labor Day for ages seven and up.

We have art classes that begin the week of August 7 at Southridge. These classes are a great way to give your child a chance to be creative after school. August 7 also begins our Dinosaurs Pottery Class for children ages 6-9 from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m at Southridge, or consider

Preschool and new toddler Enrichment Beginning September 4, Westridge will begin their very own Enrichment program for children ages 3-5 years. The children will swim, do pottery, art, music, science, yoga, computers, drama and cooking among many other theme-based activities.
