February 2011 ANNIVERSARY

Enhancing property values and creating quality of life through recreation, community events and leadership

Community Gives Back! In 2010 the HRCA presented over 20 community fundraising events which awarded over $40,000 in proceeds to local nonprofits. Events such as “In the Pink”, a breast cancer fundraiser; the Taste of Highlands Ranch; the Highlands Ranch Circus; and annual community recycling events contributed over $29,500 to the Colorado Cancer Coalition, the Saddle Up! Foundation, the HRCA’s Highlands Ranch Cultural Affairs Association, and the Highlands Ranch Community Scholarship Fund. In addition to these events, the Race Series donated $10,500 to 12 nonprofits, including Denver ROTC, Highlands Ranch Park & Recreation Foundation for Civic Green Park, Mile High Pow Wow Association, El Centro Su Teatro, HRCA Therapeutic Recreation Department, Jordan’s Angel Foundation, Pura Vida, Douglas County Rescue League, Arthritis Foundation, Junior Achievement, and Rock Canyon Cross Country Team. Thank you, Highlands Ranch, for giving back to our community.

w h o i s m y d e l e g at e ? Highlands Ranch is divided into neighborhood “districts.” Each district has an elected “delegate.” This delegate is your voice for community and Association matters. Delegates gather monthly, the third Tuesday of each month, for the Recreation Advisory Committee (RAC) at Eastridge. Delegates make recommendations to the Board of Directors on important matters that impact our community. You can (and should) contact your delegate to keep up to date on what’s going on in the Ranch. You can find your delegate on the web site at www.HRCAonline.org/leadership, and check out the map.

Delegates are elected by their district constituents in April to serve individual neighborhoods in the Ranch. Find out more by going to the web site at www.hrcaonline. org/elections.

Coalition to Preserve Douglas County – The HRCA is a member of the Coalition to Preserve Douglas County. This growing coalition opposes the rezoning and expansion for a municipal solid waste landfill (household garbage dump) on our southern border. The Coalition has developed an informational web page, www.PreserveDC.org. You may want to learn more by visiting the site and signing up for email updates specific to the Coalition and the landfill opposition. If you or your organization is concerned about this type of development in Douglas County, you may want to download the Statement of Opposition for your group, or add your name to the list of citizens opposing this project. 30 th Anniversary of Highlands Ranch – In our 30th Anniversary year, we want you to help us celebrate one of the most successful master planned communities anywhere. Not only are we one of the largest community associations in the U.S., we are one of the most successful, and regarded as being one of the best places to live. Much of that has to do with our citizens and their involvement in this place we call home. Watch our web page and this newsletter to see how you can participate in the celebration and for great programs right here in our hometown. Highlands Ranch, the Pride of Colorado! Who Removes Snow? – It is that time of year and when it snows, remember that Douglas County has an ordinance that requires homeowners to remove snow from sidewalks within 24 hours after the snowstorm ends. Please do your part and be a good neighbor. Douglas County removes snow from the public streets. Trails and sidewalks along arterial roadways (such as Broadway, Highlands Ranch Parkway, etc.) are taken care of by the Highlands Ranch Metro District. Please move any vehicles parked on the street to your driveway so the snowplow drivers can do their jobs efficiently. Thanks. Recycling in Highlands Ranch – The HRCA’s Preferred Trash and Recycling Services Provider, Pro Disposal, reports to us that their customers recycled nearly 209 tons of materials just in the month of December. The HRCA has been a proponent of sustainable communities, and household recycling is a great start for all of us. Find Pro Disposal at www.prodisposal.net and make sure you get the preferred discount for being a member of the HRCA. Busy Recreation Centers – This time of year we have a lot of people working on those fitness goals. As we head into winter, remember that we get our highest usage in the recreation centers as it gets dark earlier and the days get colder. Not to mention those New Years Resolutions. We want to make sure you enjoy your visit to our recreation centers, if you ever need assistance, please let one of our staff members know and they would be happy to assist you. Happy Valentine’s Day, Roberta!

HOA news BE A Good Neighbor Just a reminder to all residents to think about what it means to be a good neighbor. Here are some suggestions for being a courteous and conscientious neighbor: • Keep up the appearance and maintenance of your property. Remember to keep things stored out of sight such as garden equipment, toys, and trash cans. Also remember to remove all trash and pick up after your animals on a regular basis. Store landscaping and building materials out of sight or in an enclosed structure. Trash may be set out the evening before pickup. Containers must be stored out of sight the evening of pick-up. • Remember to utilize your garage and driveway as much as possible, and if necessary, to park on the street in front your own home in effort to allow neighbors accessibility to their homes. • When snow is predicted or has fallen, please park vehicles in the garage or in the driveway so that snowplows can efficiently clear the streets. Sidewalks must be cleared of snow within 24 hours after the cessation of snowfall. If this policy is not being followed by residents, you may contact Douglas County Public Works at 303-660-7480.

Holiday Decorations Once the holidays are over, lights and decorations lose their festive appeal. Please remember that all holiday displays must be removed within 30 days after the holiday. At this time all those great holiday decorations should be taken down. Homeowners that still have holiday decorations up, will be sent notices that they are in noncompliance.

Annual Paint Survey First impressions and the general appearance of neighborhoods are greatly influenced by the condition of the paint on the houses. Regular and timely painting of your home is a good practice and protects your siding from moisture and damage due to the harsh summer sun. The Covenant Compliance staff is in the process of doing an annual paint survey to identify which homes will be required to paint in 2011. Giving homeowners four to five months allows time to budget for the expense and schedule contractors and ample time to submit paint colors to the Architectural Committee for approval. We receive a high level of cooperation from homeowners which is very much appreciated.

sc h o l ars h i ps ava i l ab l e The Highlands Ranch Community Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for graduating seniors residing in Highlands Ranch or attending Highlands Ranch schools. It’s not too late to apply, but hurry! The deadline for submittal is March 1. Visit www.HRCAonline.org/hrcsf for more information and to download an application.
