We are... Word from the Backcountry
HRCA!
"The Taste" of highlands Ranch
2018 is a landmark for the newly named Backcountry Outdoor Center, our hub for outdoor programs located on Ron King Trail just east of Santa Fe Drive. While horse corrals and Base Camp have existed at the site since 2016, the addition of a first-class archery range and 3D archery range—currently under construction and due to open in June—make this area central for opportunities to experience the Backcountry Wilderness Area.
Don’t miss the most delicious event of the year! "The Taste" of Highlands Ranch is celebrating its 23rd year of excellence in food, and a variety of beverages.
Base Camp is home to Camp Backcountry, full-day youth camps, and host of annual events such as The Big Help, the Backcountry Shindig, and the Backcountry BBQ. The majority of nature programs that include preschool-age experiences, nature hikes, campfire hikes, bird hikes, as well as our horse-drawn hayrides with Bella and Buster also begin at Base Camp. The Horse Corrals have expanded and offer pony rides for preschool-age kids, trail rides for the age 7+ set, full-day and week-long horse camps as part of Camp Backcountry, and a multitude of other classes and lessons throughout the year.
Davidsons Beer, Wine & Spirits will provide samples of wine, beer, and spirits, with over 30 area restaurants showing off their best cuisine.
Since 2010, when the first programs were offered in the Backcountry, gross revenue has grown from about $50,000 to close to $500,000 in 2018. While it may seem contradictory, as our program offerings have exploded in the past nine years, there is actually less of an impact on wildlife and habitat. Most programs take place in the Backcountry Outdoor Center area, leaving the remaining Backcountry property reserved for the benefit of wildlife to have a place with limited human disturbance. Great strides have been made in habitat improvement including noxious weed treatment, brush clearing and fire mitigation, forest management, and water development through efforts and funding from the 501c3 nonprofit, the Backcountry Conservation & Education Fund. Indicators of success include a more abundant and healthier elk population, the turkey population has tripled in size, and thriving native vegetation. For more information and to register for programs go to www.HRCAonline.org/Backcountry.
Summer Senior Activity Guide Now Available HRCA offers a wide variety of programs and classes geared specifically for seniors who want to become or remain active. Check out the insert inside this newsletter for activities happening through August. Adults age 50 and older are invited to celebrate Active Lifestyle Month by participating in free activities in Highlands Ranch throughout May. Brought to you by HRCA in partnership with the Highlands Ranch Metro District, activities include Nia (low impact aerobic dance), pickleball, aqua fitness, bocce ball and dinner, POP tennis, walks at Redstone Park; and a trail walk/fishing/BBQ event. For a list of event dates and times, go to www.HRCAonline.org/seniors. Registration required 48 hours prior to each event. For more information call 720-240-4922.
The ever-popular outdoor beer garden will be stocked full with food from local restaurants and beers from local breweries, along with additional seating and music! Each year a silent auction benefiting a nonprofit organization rounds out “The Taste.” This year the American Cancer Society (ACS) will receive the proceeds of the auction. ACS is a global grassroots force of nearly 2 million volunteers dedicated to saving lives, celebrating lives, and leading the fight for a world without cancer. From breakthrough research, to free lodging near treatment, a 24/7/365 live helpline, free rides to treatment, and convening powerful activists to create awareness and impact, ACS is attacking cancer from every angle. Highlands Ranch Community Association is in full swing with our programs and activities! The temperatures have warmed up and we are finally seeing more of our neighbors after a winter hibernation! The trees and other vegetation are now fully bloomed and summer is in the air. Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day weekend are all happening this month.
Events: May starts off with a signature event for HRCA. The Taste of Highlands Ranch is one of my personal favorite get-together events of the year! It is being held at Eastridge Recreation Center the evening of Friday, May 4. That same weekend, on Saturday, May 5, we are hosting our Computer/Electronics Recycling & Paper Shredding event and on Sunday, May 6, the weekly Farmers' Market begins. Then after you run in the Mother’s Day 5K on May 12, bring the kids to Hooked on Fishing on May 19. Be sure to check out our web site for other great events at www.HRCAonline.org/Events.
Spring Time in The Ranch: Now that warmer temperatures are upon us, more homeowners are outside using the Backcountry Trails. There are 8,200 acres of conservation space to explore. HRCA members are invited to enjoy the 26 miles of trails and everyone can sign up for various Backcountry activities. Please help us preserve our trails by limiting bike riding when conditions are muddy and leave nature as you found it by cleaning up any trash or debris brought with you. And just a reminder, please leave your four-legged friends at home while on the Backcountry trails. This rule is in place to minimize the disturbance to the habit and the abundant wildlife.
Upcoming: Be sure to mark your calendar for the Southridge Recreation Center Annual Maintenance Closure. Southridge will be closed this year from May 7 - May 12. Staff will be busy this week performing maintenance projects and doing a deep clean of the entire facility. We encourage our members to check out any of the other three recreation centers during the closure week. And another date for your calendar, the outdoor pools open for the season on May 25! Get ready for some outdoor fun and be sure to check out our new adult swim night events that happen monthly in June, July, and August. You will find the summer pool hours on page 3 of the newsletter.
Volunteers: This month we would like to recognize Allison Quelch. Allison is originally from Colorado Springs and currently lives in Denver. She graduated from CU Boulder with a degree in Psychology, and went on to get her Alternative Teaching License in education. Allison has been volunteering with Therapeutic Recreation for three months and "absolutely loves it!" She volunteers with TR Hip Hop and Sports Camps. She says to anyone considering volunteering with TR, "I highly suggest it! Everyone is so kind and it is a blast!" Thank you Allison for all you do!

Community News Community Improvement Services Transitioning Our Community's Residential Fencing We are all aware that our community is aging, and in places it is beginning to show. To maintain our high property values in Highlands Ranch, the HRCA continually looks at the condition of yards, fences, and homes. In relation to this, the Board of Directors asked the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) to provide recommendations to address the inconsistencies in residential street facing fencing condition and colors throughout the community. The ARC has recommended the implementation of a uniform stain color that would provide for consistency over time and will be in collaboration with the Highlands Ranch Metro District (HRMD) and their continuing fence maintenance efforts being installed on the main arterials throughout the community. This transition will take several years to complete, as the intention is to make it as easy as possible for residents. Fencing that is in need of repair or replacement will now be required to be stained the new "Highlands Ranch Fence Brown." This applies only to residential fencing that is facing a public street, school or park (including wing fencing in the front of the house and any fencing that is open to a public street). A fence that has recently been stained will be not be required to be re-stained until the fence becomes in need of repair. The Community Improvement Services Department stands ready to assist our members with questions and concerns during the transition. Please email covenants@hrcaonline.org or call 303-471-8832. More details can be found on our website www.HRCAonline.org/Fence.
