It wouldn’t be summer without a concert in the park every Thursday from now through July 30! So, head out to the Cultural Affairs Association’s Summer Concert Series at Highlands Heritage Regional Park from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. A new event this year is Oaked and Smoked on July 18 from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Southridge Recreation Center! HRCA, in partnership with Davidsons Liquors, brings you an enjoyable an afternoon of sampling American whiskeys paired with delicious grilled and barbecued delights. Touch-a-Truck will be held at Cherry Hills church parking lot from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on July 25. For more information, please check out our web site for other great events at www.HRCAonline.org/Events.
Volunteer recognition: HRCA would not be what it is today without a great battalion of volunteers! We have recognized them in the past via various newsletter articles. I have seen a tremendous amount of hours being worked by these fantastic people and thought I would dedicate a portion of this newsletter every month to calling them out to say thank you! If you see them around the community, please take the time to thank them as well! This month I would like to recognize Paula Friborg. Paula is the Parent Volunteer Coordinator for the HRCA Seahawks Rocky Mountain Swim League. Paula attends all the swim meets and makes sure all of the parent volunteer shifts are covered for each meet. She does a great job and handles many challenging situations each week and always has a big smile on her face! Thank you Paula and keep up the good work!!!

Community News Habitat Improvement in the Backcountry Wilderness Area The Backcountry, a working cattle ranch for many decades, has long realized the positive impact of cattle grazing on conservation areas. The HRCA has continued the grazing practices since conveyance of the property in 2009. After years of study and consultation with Colorado Parks and Wildlife biologists and the Natural Resource Conservation Service, it has been determined that a fencing project dividing the 8,200 acre single pasture into three smaller pastures would have the largest positive impact on habitat in relation to its cost.
Stay informed e-ME, Facebook, Twitter & Instagram Sign up for the eMe eblast and receive up-to-date community information and valuable program information.
In addition, a rotation schedule and strict carrying capacity for grazing cattle has been established. The result will be improved production in grasses, forbs, and shrubs which will benefit many species of wildlife including ground nesting birds, elk, turkeys, and perhaps most of all, deer. The deer population in this area of the Backcountry has been almost non-existent, but we expect it to come back over the next few years due to this fencing project.
Like us on Facebook to get general HRCA updates or choose specific programs you’d like to receive information from such as Backcountry, Tennis, Sports, Therapeutic Recreation, and/or Fitness.
The four miles of fence has been installed according to the wildlife friendly fencing guidelines outlined by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife. In addition, in frequent wildlife crossing areas wildlife jumps have been installed which makes it much easier for wildlife to cross the fence lines.
For reminders about current happenings around the Ranch, subscribe to the HRCA Twitter feeds.
The total cost of the project is $90,000 with some of the funding coming from the annual Elk Banquet and Silent Auction which raised nearly $10,000 last year. As development continues around the Backcountry Wilderness Area, this pristine conservation area will only become more important to wildlife in the near and distant future. This project is a large step to ensure that wildlife continue to thrive in the Backcountry Wilderness Area of Highlands Ranch.

Recent Storms As we are all aware, some Colorado storms can cause damage to just about everything in their path. Remember, if one of these storms hits your neighborhood approval is required from the Highlands Ranch Community Association prior to starting work to replace damaged roofing, paint, siding, etc. The appropriate architectural request form can be found at www.HRCAonline.org/Forms. If you have any questions regarding the process, please call the HRCA at 303-471-8821.
