The Highlands Ranch Community Association is in full swing with our programs and activities! The temperatures have warmed up and we are finally seeing more of our neighbors after a winter hibernation! The trees and other vegetation are now fully bloomed and summer is in the air. I hope you are able to attend one or more of our numerous events this month.

Events – May starts off with a signature event for HRCA. The Taste of Highlands Ranch is one of my personal favorite get together events of the year! It is at the Recreation Center at Eastridge the evening of Friday, May 2. That same weekend, on Sunday, May 4, we are starting our weekly Farmers' and Street Markets and hosting our Electronics Recycling & Paper Shredding event. After you run in the Mother’s Day 5K, bring the kids to our Hooked on Fishing series on May 10. Please check out our web site for other great events at www.HRCAonline.org/Events.

Energy Savings Program - It has been a while since I updated you on this important project. As many of you know, we spent 2013 looking at and garnering approval of an effort to improve our energy savings at HRCA. The project implemented numerous upgrades to equipment and controls within most of our recreation centers. I am happy to report that the project has been completed and we will begin to monitor the savings and report back to you periodically on our progress. Feel free to check out more detail on our web site.

Strategic Planning and Performance Measurement - As I mentioned last month, the Board held a retreat on March 28 to continue their work on a Strategic Plan. Not only did they give direction on producing an annual report, but we also received a project list that senior staff is implementing and reporting back on each month. This project list contains major elements such as marketing strategy, communication, and marketing improvements, reserve study, and budgeting improvements. There has been much progress on all of these and I will provide updates in the future.

cOMMUNITY news C o m m u n i t y I m p r ov e m e n t s e rv i c e s Have you ever wondered what the benefits of living in a covenant controlled community are? How does my property value compare to adjacent communities? Sometimes HOA’s get a bad rap for simply following and enforcing the rules set forth in their respective community declarations; however, the mainstay of any HOA should be to maintain and enhance the property values of a community. The rules and covenants of your HRCA are an asset to everyone involved and are overseen by a Board of Directors, elected by community delegates that have resident's best interest in mind.

Both commercial and residential property owners are subject to the covenants outlined in our community declaration. Citizen advisory committees are appointed annually by the Board of Directors to be actively involved in the HRCA's Architectural Review and Compliance process. The Architectural Residential Committee (ARC) meets bi-monthly to review applications for residential home improvements and exterior modifications. The Development Review Committee (DRC) meets monthly to review commercial new builds and renovations. The Commercial Review Committee (CRC), meets weekly and reviews signage and Site Improvement Plans. Additionally, each committee perpetually reviews their respective guidelines and updates and revises annually if warranted. Prior to adoption of any rule or guideline, the Board of Directors “vet” the proposal to the community at large for comment. By and large, our community takes a great interest and pride in the establishment of our covenants.

As a property owner, you can always find a current copy of the Residential Improvement Guidelines or the Commercial Improvement Guidelines on our web site www.HRCAonline.org/Covenants. It is always a good idea to scour the rules and covenants if you’re planning an exterior project.

The Backcountry Wilderness Area is offering more opportunities than ever this summer to enjoy the great outdoors, right here in Highlands Ranch.

Our week-long Outdoor Adventure Camps are filling fast and they will sell out again this summer. Camps include horseback riding, archery, team building games, hikes, wildlife lessons, science, and much more. We aim to create a love for the outdoors through recreation, education, and fun!

New this summer are Horse Adventure Camps and Basic Horse Classes.

Participants will learn to groom, saddle, care for a horse, and how to ride. By the end of the class students will be comfortable and confident on and around horses.
