Enhancing property values and creating quality of life through recreation, community events, and leadership
September 2014
h i g h l a n d s r a n c h d ay s The old west comes to life at the historic Highlands Ranch Mansion with a tepee, gold panning, quilting, horse-drawn hay rides, a petting zoo, llamas, cannons, fur trapping, and more on September 4 - 6, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Entertainment features Native American singers and dancers, banjo music, Buffalo Bill Experience, and Hawk Quest. Take part in hands-on exhibits and a mansion tour. Tickets (available only at the gate) are $4 for ages 13 and up and $2 for children ages 3 - 12. (Ages 2 and under are free.) The mansion parking lot is closed on Saturday, September 6. Parking for the free shuttle to the mansion will be available at Mountain Vista High School's east lot. Saturday's shuttle starts at 8:30 a.m. and runs continuously until the last shuttle at 1:30 p.m.
Oktoberfest Oktoberfest in September? Yes, the first Oktoberfest, in 1810 in honor of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig's marriage, was celebrated in October, in the years following, the festival was moved to September to take advantage of the warmer nights. Now, in Munich, Oktoberfest is a sixteen-day celebration. Save the airfare and bring your family and friends to the Highlands Ranch Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 20. Start the day with the Oktoberfest 5K at 9:00 a.m. then stick around for the German festival starting at noon - 10:00 p.m. Register for the 5K at www.HRraceseries.com. Enjoy German food, music, entertainment, dancing, and, of course, great bier. Oktoberfest has become a great cultural experience with entertainment that is sure to delight. At 3:00 p.m. bring your Dachshund for the annual Dachshund Races. Registration is 2:30 - 3:00 p.m. Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place racers and for the best dressed Dachshund! The little ones will enjoy magic, balloons, and games to their heart’s content while you and your friends imbibe in authentic German entertainment, cuisine and bier, all while enjoying a beautiful Colorado evening.
F i r e w o r k s a t Ok t o b e r f e s t Back by popular demand, we will have a short seven-minute fireworks finale at approximately 9:30 p.m., weather permitting. The fireworks launch at Town Center Drive and Sgt. Chris Falkel Drive.

Wie gehts!!! What would September be without our annual tribute to German culture with Oktoberfest! This fun and entertaining event is September 20, so make your plans now to be there! The event is free and is at Town Center South from noon - 10:00 p.m. If Oktoberfest isn’t your cup of beer, then maybe a night of dancing at the Big Band Dance Night at the mansion is in order! Be responsible and recycle your electronics and shred your sensitive documents at the Computer/Electronics Recycling and Paper Shredding event on September 27. As an added security precaution, be sure that you first properly erase important data from all of your computers and copiers. And finally, we can’t forget the ever popular Doggie Splash on September 7. Bring your puppy out to Westridge and have them take a dip in our pool! For all of these events and more, please check out our web site at www.HRCAonline.org or your Activity Guide! Reminders - As the season changes and days gets shorter plants begin to prepare for the winter season. As homeowners, you should take time to prepare for the colder months ahead by removing dying plants or gardening equipment and disposing or storing of them properly. Your lawns may also need less water but still need to be irrigated to a certain degree.

When designing your landscape, you will want to incorporate trees that grow to an appropriate height for your lawn. Trees do best when planted in their dormant stage, which is in the autumn season. The trees you plant in the fall will reward you with lush green foliage in the spring and summer and may add color to your outdoor space next fall. Autumn is also a good time to plant shrubs. Shrubs are a manageable way to keep color in your yard after summer flowers have vanished.
You can make a difference in your community and get a tax write-off.
When contemplating landscaping ideas, you will want to consider how your choices affect your year-round curb appeal. Fall is the ideal time to plant perennials. It is also an excellent time to find a selection of perennials at reduced prices. The flowers will have reached the end of their peak cycle of beauty and garden centers often sell them at a reduced rate. Peonies, lilies, and iris are just a few perennials that will beautify your lawn in the spring if planted in the fall. Just as you like to vary the décor in your home, you may want to periodically redesign your landscape. Change is good and fall is an ideal time to restructure your landscape.
