COLLEGE JOB SEARCH

Q:

I am a junior in college, business major, and have begun my career search. Some of my peers have said that I should start later and just use the college career service, that’s their job to find us jobs upon graduation. I am still not sure what areas of business I want to go into, however, I don’t think I should wait until senior year. Am I on the right track and what should I do to help find my “niche?” Barbara S. (Virginia)

A:

Barbara, you are on the right track! In fact, I would suggest college students start as early as their sophomore year in terms of researching companies, occupations, and job titles within their major.

Your friends are right in one respect; use your career services office. Make yourself very familiar with their services, workshops, summer opportunities, internships and college sponsored job fairs. However; your employment is your responsibility, so do make it a priority. In terms of finding your niche, you majored in “business” for a reason – something about that industry struck a chord with you. Probe that a little more and then think about your interest/ hobbies. Find a way to combine your college training and hobbies/interest for the right career path for you. Business is very broad and I am sure that you can find what area you fit in.

Also, consider going on informational interviews with persons in your field. Ask your professors or adjunct instructors to suggest some professionals in the area who are open to informational interviews. I suggest you find 3 professionals in the business settings that may interest you (or settings that you know nothing about) and ask them the following questions: 1. What’s the latest trend in the industry (where is it growing)? 2. What does it take to be successful in this setting? 3. What are the three most important

4. 5. 6. 7.

characteristics a job seeker should have in this field? What areas should you not go into within this setting? What characteristics would not make you successful in this industry? How is technology affecting the industry? If they could do it all over again, what would they do the same or different?

You will find that using these suggestions will give you a heads up in your job search before graduation. Good Luck!

M

Where have you been? By: Scott Kee

any members of the Baby Boom Generation are in a unique stage of life where they may be caring for aging parents while still raising their own children. Others have taken time off from a career to pursue studies or develop a business. Still others have spent time away in the military. All these situations pose a particular challenge during the interview when seeking to reenter the commercial workforce.

professional studies and anything else you can get your hands on to show that you are up on the latest trends and happenings in your field. Get social – If you haven’t built a social and business network now is the time to do so. Use LinkedIn and Facebook to your advantage. Get involved – Get active in local organizations such as church, civic league, neighborhood watch and any other organization where you can contribute and meet people (this will also help you build your network).

Inevitably, the interviewer will want to know why you were out of the traditional workforce and what you’ve been up to during that time. Be sure and cover this in your resume and don’t be intimidated or discouraged – address the question head on and with confidence. It’s fairly safe to say that most, if not all managers and HR professionals have had either direct experience with these issues or know someone who has.

Start a blog – If you like to write and assist others a blog may be just the thing for you. It will help you become known and will be something you can leverage during your interview.

A recent boss of mine is currently on an extended sabbatical from the company to care for, not one, but two family members in two different states! Was this a difficult decision? You bet it was. Was it the right thing to do? Absolutely!

Practice – If your interviewing skills are a bit rusty ask friends or family members who have recently interviewed for a job for advice. Ask them to share their experiences and some of the questions they were asked.

As you prepare to reenter the workforce there are some things you can do to give yourself a boost and build your confidence.

If you’ve recently reentered the workforce or are considering it, please join the conversation and add a comment to this post………….you may help motivate someone who just needs a little boost! ■

Be a voracious reader – Study current events and news relating to your chosen field and read journals and
