Skilled Trades Open Doors to Opportunity

An ongoing shift in the workplace has upended much of the employment advice of even a decade ago, when a college degree, business suit and briefcase equaled career success. The burgeoning cost of earning a traditional 4-year degree plus an iffy job market has changed that equation. Today, it’s the skilled trades that offer one of the most reliable pathways to a well-paying job that’s in demand. Recent news headlines point to the high demand for skilled tradespeople – and the high wages they command. “College or $70,000 a year? Aviation industry scrambles for mechanics as retirements loom,” reads a CNBC headline. In the Los Angeles Times: “Shale country is out of workers. That means $140,000 for a truck driver and 100% pay hikes.” And from the Palm Beach Post: “Despite robust pay, jobs for mechanics and machinists go unfilled.” And that’s just a sampling. According to a report released the Manhattan Institute, six of the 10 fastest-growing industries are reliant on the skilled trades. These are jobs that often pay as well, if not better, than the salaries many college grads bring home. And most skilled tradespeople begin their careers PM-25725977D

backed by short-term certification courses, technical training programs, an associate’s degree or an apprenticeship – no bachelor’s degree (or student loan debt) required. Another bonus? The skilled trades are becoming a high-tech haven, addressing the need for continued relevance in an evolving economy and attracting employees who enjoy working with cutting-edge techniques and innovative equipment. “We have plenty of studies that show the prevalence of STEM skills in areas like technician jobs has grown dramatically,” says James Brown, executive director at the Washington, D.C.-based STEM Education Coalition. “For example, if you think about the last time you took your car in to get it worked on, your car got plugged into a computer. The mechanic that’s repairing it works through a computer interface; it’s not just wrenches and grease now, it’s computer science and engineering. “This is occurring sort of under the radar, but it’s pretty clear that these are the kinds of jobs where the vast majority of the growth in STEM occupations has been,” says Brown. A recent jobs study by the

Brookings Institute bears that out. In Hampton Roads, the report notes that over half of STEM-related jobs require less than a bachelor’s degree and are being performed by workers with associate’s degrees, career training diplomas, certifications, or apprenticeship training. A good chunk of these jobs are in areas like manufacturing and construction, including installation, maintenance and repair. A good resource to begin researching a career in the skilled trades is the Virginia Community College System’s online Wizard (www. vawizard.org), which offers a regional overview of available jobs, how much they pay and what type of training is necessary to work in that field. You can also visit career counselors and academic advisers at local colleges and technical training schools for expert advice in matching your interests and career goals to the right skilled trade. For those who are sorting through career options with an eye toward long-term success, job satisfaction and rewarding pay, the skilled trades are a golden choice.

Shift your career into high gear How important is trucking to the national economy? “If you look at all the freight tonnage that moves around the country, trucks haul nearly 70 percent of it,” says Bob Costello, chief economic advisor for ATA (American Trucking Associations). “What we always say is that if you bought it, it was on a truck at some point.” And that’s a problem, says Costello, because there’s currently a shortage of drivers – which means plenty of available jobs. “And wages, especially in some of the longer haul segments where the shortage is most acute, have been going up aggressively and will continue to go up aggressively,” says Costello, who places the median pay for drivers at about $55,000 a year. “And that’s only the start of it because you’re also going to get health insurance, you’re going to get a 401(k), you’re going to get paid time off and you’re going to get life insurance. I always tell drivers if you’re not getting that stuff, you need to find another company to work for, it’s out there. And by the way, this is for a nonunion job.” Today’s truckers can expect to drive wellappointed trucks that ride comfortably and are packed with job-easing equipment and safety technology, like blind spot detection and warnings if you get too close to another vehicle. “And you’re going to have an onboard computer system that will dispatch you and keep track of PM-25725979D

your hours so you don’t have to fill out a paper log,” points out Costello. To enter the field, drivers typically take a course that preps them for the CDL (commercial driver’s license) exam. For students who take out a school loan to pay for the program, Costello has good news. “Once you get that commercial driver’s license and go to work for a trucking company, most of them will pay about $200 a month until that loan is paid off,” he says. Finding a field where your skills are in demand is a welcome change for many who move into trucking from less secure jobs. Rebecca Higginbotham, a program coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program (www.auto.edu), says the school can’t train drivers fast enough to meet demand. “We have recruiters come in from different companies all the time and I’d say 90 percent of our students have job offers before they even graduate,” she says. ATI driving students take either morning or evening classes; once they’ve completed the eight-week program, they’re ready for VDOT’s commercial driver’s license exam. Whether her students slide into the drivers’ seats of tractor-trailers, local delivery trucks, buses or heavy commercial vehicles, Higginbotham says their career prospects are all the same – “They’ll always have a job. I see nothing but growth for drivers in the future.”

Four Setbacks That You Can Use to

Jump-Start

Y

ou wrote an awesome cover letter, aced the phone interview, and received an encouraging remark from the hiring manager as you left the final interview. Then, silence. And more silence. Finally, a call comes in. “We went another direction.” We’ve all had these gut-wrenching moments in our careers. It feels like the end of the world. After all the effort, you have little to show for it. But these moments are just moments. These feelings of doom and despair are just emotions, and they’re getting in your way. While it’s important to process and heal from the stress and even the trauma from setbacks during your personal and professional life, it’s more important to focus on moving forward. Remember, career management is continuous and requires effort every day, including the days that feel like everything is over. Let’s take a look at some of the worst career setbacks and how to bounce back from them:

YOU’RE FIRED When you hear the words, everything goes quiet. You’re stuck in awe as you pack up your desk and leave. It is devastating. In fact, a study conducted by the What Works Center for Wellbeing and the University of East Anglia found that people care more about being fired than enduring a break up. It even takes longer to recover from the loss of a job than the loss of an intimate relationship. No matter how it happens, even if you’re blindsided, remember that it’s an opportunity for growth. Career management requires that you find ways to learn and grow, and being let go is the perfect time to find what you need to learn more about and improve. Before you leave, ask for specific feedback

on your performance. Find out where you fell short, and determine where you want to take your career next. As you look for new jobs, you might be asked about how you ended your employment. Pointing fingers and assigning blame is a huge red flag -- and trying to hide the fact that you were fired is even worse. Be proactively transparent and share exactly what happened. Highlight how it inspired you to learn new skills and become a better professional.

YOU DIDN’T GET THAT DREAM JOB Despite what it feels like when you hear that you didn’t earn a job offer, you are better off. Remember, your job is more than just a paycheck -- it’s a relationship. You want to feel valued and needed. A good fit comes from both sides, not just yours. Refine your job search and focus on moving forward and finding your next dream role. There’s always another position that can fulfill you. Also, reflect on what may have cost you the opportunity. If you have the chance, ask the employer what happened. For example, let’s say they mention your lack of experience. Instead of merely stressing about feeling undesirable in the talent market, start seeking out volunteer opportunities or internships to add to your resume. Research your prospective roles, look for gaps in skills you have and skills needed, and start to fill that void.

YOU’RE DEMOTED When you have to take a pay cut or move down to a lower-level position, request one-on-one time with your direct leadership team. Ask how you fell short of expectations and determine a course of action to move back up. Then, dedicate time to adding more re-

sponsibilities to your role and becoming an expert in your field. Your career management plan should include mentors. Ask tenured employees above you to teach you what it takes to succeed in your role. You can also find mentors at networking events. Mentors are the best resource because you build a strong rapport with them and have an ally throughout your entire career. Focus on maintaining a mutually beneficial relationship with them.

YOUR LEADERSHIP CHANGED Every culture feels the energy change when a new leadership team comes in. It’s not an issue until you realize that they don’t fit your personality or work style. If you want to quit because your new boss is bad, you’re not alone. In fact, according to an April 2015 Gallup study, around 50 percent of employees leave their company to get away from their bosses. First, try to establish a good rapport and relationship. However, if you dread work every day and can’t find solutions, it’s time to search elsewhere. Start researching different roles, industries, and career options. Maybe you’re burnt out because you’re not passionate about your field. Ask yourself what industry you love. Let’s say you’re an avid baseball fan and you excelled in sales management in your current industry. You can apply your sales expertise and thrive in sales while working for a baseball team or for Major League Baseball. When it comes to career management, you need to check in with yourself regularly to ensure you’re living by your values and working in a field that fulfills you. When you love what you do, you’re well-equipped to see these setbacks as real opportunities for growth. Success comes when you overcome adversity and focus on moving forward. ■
